With the release of Dragon Ball FighterZ drawing closer, Bandai Namco Games took to Twitter to release info about the required specs needed for the game's PC version. The game will release for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on January 25. Developed by Arc System Works, the same team behind the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue series, Dragon Ball FighterZ possesses a visual style that mimics the popular anime.

In addition to the specs listed below, the publisher offered more details about pre-order bonuses for the game, which include early access to Goku and Vegeta's Super Saiyan Blue forms, along with exclusive avatars to use in the in-game lobby. Moreover, pre-ordering the game will give you access to the pre-launch beta. The game is currently available to pre-order on Steam.

New Injustice 2 Video Breakdown Shows Off Next DLC Character, Enchantress

By Kevin Knezevic on Jan 06, 2018 05:06 am

NetherRealm has shared a new trailer for its superhero fighting game, Injustice 2. The new video provides our first look at the game's next DLC fighter, Enchantress, who is slated to arrive on the roster for some players very soon.

Fittingly, Enchantress battles primarily using her magical powers. She can create clones of herself to attack other fighters from a distance, and at one point in the new trailer, she encases an opponent in a block of ice. NetherRealm provided an even closer look at Enchantress in action during a livestream today. You can watch her moveset breakdown above, while her reveal trailer is embedded below.

Enchantress is the second character from Injustice 2's Fighter Pack 3; the first, Atom, was added to the game's roster last month. She'll be followed by another surprise addition to Injustice 2: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. NetherRealm announced the quartet back in November, but the developer still hasn't shared any details on how the characters will play or whether players will get to choose which Turtle they take into battle.

Enchantress will be available for all PS4, Xbox One, and PC players who purchased the Injustice 2 Ultimate Edition, Ultimate Pack, or Fighter Pack 3 beginning January 9. Everyone else will be able to purchase her individually one week later, on January 16. Previous Injustice 2 DLC characters cost $6, while the Fighter Pack 3 runs for $20.

Independent Games Festival Awards Nominees Announced

By Patrick Faller on Jan 06, 2018 05:00 am

The Independent Games Festival has announced its nominees for this year's awards, with critically-acclaimed indie games like Night in the Woods and Baba is You topping the list with multiple nominations.

In total, 35 games have been nominated for the awards, which will be given out in March at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. It'll be hosted by Trent Kusters, co-founder of League of Geeks, the Australia-based development team behind Armello.

The most-nominated game is Baba is You, a puzzle game that allows players to alter the rules and game logic to help them solve puzzles. The adventure game Night in the Woods, known for its exploratory gameplay and iconic cat characters, has received several nominations too, and so has Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy, a sadistic climbing game that rewards players who reach the top of the mountain. All three games are nominated for the $30,000 Seumas McNally Grand Prize, along with West of Loathing, Into the Breach, and Heat Signature.

The IGF awards will be announced immediately before the Game Developers Choice Awards, which highlights all sections of video game development. Follow GameSpot for full coverage of the winners, and check out the full list on nominees below.

The alt.ctrl.GDC award is also returning to IGF Awards. For the second year, it will honor the most creative and unique video game controller, with a prize of $3,000 given out to the winning game. IGF Award winners will receive more than $50,000 of prizes in various categories, both the IGF Awards and the Game Developers Choice Awards ceremonies are available to attend for all GDC 2018 pass-holders. Alien Director Ridley Scott May Have Found His Next Epic Franchise

By Chris E. Hayner on Jan 06, 2018 03:59 am

Ridley Scott is lining up his next directorial project. The man behind the Alien and Blade Runner franchises, as well as All the Money in the World, is looking to dip his toe into the world of magic.

According to a report from Variety, Scott is currently in negotiations with Disney to helm The Merlin Saga, which will follow the origin story of a young Merlin as his journey toward becoming King Arthur's mentor is set in motion. The film will be based on the 12-book series The Merlin Saga by TA Barron. The author's collection of novels were released between 1996 and 2011.

No Caption Provided

Should Scott wind up directing the film, his production company Scott Free would produce the project with Disney. It's worth noting this isn't the only movie featuring Merlin that Disney has in the works. The company, which is currently in the process of acquiring 21st Century Fox, is also working on a Sword in the Stone live-action adaptation.

Interesting, this isn't the only Disney project on Scott's mind at the moment. Speaking with Digital Spy, the director says he hopes the company will make more Alien movies now that it will own the property. "I think they should because I think, when people have a hard and fast franchise which has ongoing interest, it's crazy not to do something with it," he explains. Then again, he also thinks Alien movies should be as popular as Star Wars. Given the response to Alien: Covenant, though, Disney might disagree with him.

HP Issues Recall On Laptop Batteries, Here's How To See If You're Affected

By Chris Pereira on Jan 06, 2018 03:56 am

HP has announced a recall on batteries in select notebook and mobile workstations sold in recent years. Affected batteries pose a fire threat and could burn users, so if you've bought such an HP device since late 2015, you should check to find out if you're impacted. Here's everything you need to know.

The voluntary safety recall was initiated this month, with HP offering replacements for affected units. "These batteries have the potential to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to customers," HP said in a statement. "For this reason, it is extremely important to check whether your battery is affected."

These batteries were included with select units sold around the world between December 2015 and December 2017, according to the company. This includes the HP Probook 64x (G2 and G3), HP ProBook 65x (G2 and G3), HP x360 310 G2, HP Envy M6, HP Pavilion x360, HP 11 notebook computers, and HP ZBook (17 G3, 17 G4, and Studio G3) mobile workstations. Batteries for some of these are not replaceable by users, but whatever the case, HP says it will handle getting a safe battery into owners' devices.

No Caption Provided

HP has set up a recall site and released a BIOS update. This places the system in Battery Safety Mode, which allows the computer to be used by plugging it in. When enabled on an affected system, the battery will be discharged and then can't be charged (at least without disabling the safety mode). HP says it "strongly recommends" using this mode if you're affected.

Those who are impacted can request a no-cost replacement through HP's website. You can download a tool to verify if your battery is susceptible to the issue here.

Two Of Pokemon Go's Gen 3 Region-Exclusive Pokemon Have Rotated

By Kevin Knezevic on Jan 06, 2018 03:51 am

Pokemon Go developer Niantic recently expanded the game's Pokedex with the introduction of Gen 3 Pokemon, which arrived early last month as part of a big Pokemon Go update. As was the case with certain previous Pokemon, some of these monsters could only be encountered in a specific part of the world, namely Zangoose and Seviper, which were exclusive to the Americas/Africa and Europe/Asia, respectively. However, it appears the two Pokemon have now traded regions.

On Reddit, Pokemon Go players are reporting that they've begun encountering Seviper in America/Africa, while Zangoose is now appearing in Europe/Asia. Each creature's Pokedex entry has noted the longstanding rivalry between the two species, which makes this swap an amusing nod to the series' history. Niantic hasn't said whether or not the two Pokemon have traded regions permanently or if they'll return to their original locations, so players will want to catch them soon while they still have a chance.

The rotation seems to have occurred shortly after the conclusion of Pokemon Go's holiday event, which ended on January 4. The event saw the return of the festive Santa hat Pikachu and Raichu, as well as a Santa hat Pichu that could be hatched from Eggs. The event also introduced an additional 20 Ice- and Water-type Gen 3 Pokemon to the game, including Milotic, Sharpedo, and Wailord. Another common sight during Pokemon Go's holiday event, the gift-giving Pokemon Delibird, is still available to capture, though it appears much less frequently now.

Pokemon Go's first Gen 3 Legendary, Groudon, is still available. The gigantic Ground-type will appear as a Raid Boss at Gyms until January 15. It'll presumably be followed by its Pokemon Sapphire counterpart, Kyogre. Niantic teased that the Legendary Water-type will come to the game by featuring it in a promotional image for the recent holiday event. The popular Psychic-type Mewtwo is also available, though unlike other Legendaries, it can only be encountered in the invite-only EX Raids.

Niantic recently introduced a weather system and a new AR+ mode to Pokemon Go. The latter makes Pokemon more aware of their surroundings, requiring players to more carefully approach the monsters to avoid startling them away. Niantic has also recently expressed interest in bringing Pokemon Go to China.

There's A Great Deal In Humble's Next Monthly Bundle

By Kallie Plagge on Jan 06, 2018 03:45 am

The Humble Monthly Bundle for February has been revealed. It includes Civilization VI and two DLC packs--the Australia Civilization and Scenario Pack and the Vikings Scenario Pack--for only $12.

Each Humble Monthly Bundle gets you a mystery assortment of games. Paying the $12 subscription fee early grants you access to Civ 6 immediately, with six other games to follow on February 2. Civ 6 released in 2016 and normally costs $60.

No Caption Provided

The first expansion for Civ 6, Rise and Fall, was announced in November. In addition to new civilizations and leaders, Rise and Fall adds features designed to level out the playing field in the late game. Earlier this week, developer Firaxis revealed the expansion's new Cree civilization and leader.

The February Bundle coincides with the release of Rise and Fall on February 8. Humble also recently tweeted a deal that gets you a $20 store credit when you purchase the Monthly Bundle annual plan. You can check out all the details on the Humble Bundle website.

PUBG-Style "Battlegrounds" Game Mode Coming To Hero Shooter Paladins

By Oscar Dayus on Jan 06, 2018 03:18 am

Paladins, a free-to-play hero shooter that has previously been compared to Overwatch, is launching a PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds-like battle royale mode. The new mode is simply called Battlegrounds, and it's coming to Paladins at some point in 2018.

Battlegrounds will spawn 100 players into a "massive map" that developer Hi-Rez says is over 300 times the size of a typical Paladins Siege map. Success in Battlegrounds will involve exploring the territory and looting its outposts for gear. Where Battlegrounds differs from PUBG, however, is that players are put into squads and must work together to be the last team standing. Check out a trailer for the new mode below.

Paladins is not the first game to add a free battle royale mode. Warface added a similar mode in November, while Fortnite added a free, standalone PUBG-style mode in September. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds developer PUBG Corp took issue with Fortnite's version, saying, "We are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known."

It's no surprise other developers have tried to emulate PUBG's formula. The game has been wildly successful, and recently passed 3 million concurrent users on Steam alone. That milestone came after finally reaching its full 1.0 release on PC. PUBG also launched on Xbox One in December, albeit still in early access. It was a quick hit there, selling 1 million copies in its first 48 hours. The game has now sold over 30 million copies across both PC and Xbox One.

Developer PUBG Corp. recently said it wants to bring the game to "every platform," so a PlayStation 4 release could be in the cards. Additionally, the developer said it has spoken with Netflix and people in Hollywood about extending the game to new mediums. For more on the hit multiplayer game, check out our PUBG review.

Super Mario Odyssey, More Switch Games Top Amazon's Best-Selling Game Charts In 2017

By Kevin Knezevic on Jan 06, 2018 03:12 am

Amazon has revealed its 100 best-selling video games of 2017. While the list encompasses all of the game-related products the online retailer sold throughout the past year, the actual list of best-selling games was dominated by Nintendo, which published seven of Amazon's top 10 titles by platform in 2017.

The best-selling game on Amazon for 2017 was Super Mario Odyssey, the first major Mario game for Switch and GameSpot's No. 3 pick for Game of the Year. It was followed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the Switch version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, while Splatoon 2, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild rounded out the top 10.

The PS4-exclusive adventure Horizon: Zero Dawn was also one of Amazon's most popular titles of 2017, coming in at No. 4. Call of Duty: WWII, which Activision touted was the No. 1 game in North America by revenue, also took two spots on Amazon's top 10 list; the PS4 version was No. 5, with the Xbox One version following at No. 6. Some of Amazon's other top-selling titles include Destiny 2, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

While Super Mario Odyssey was the best-selling game on Amazon, the most popular game-related product was the $20 PlayStation Store gift card, with the $10 variant coming in second. The most popular console on Amazon was the Switch, while the DualShock 4 controller was the best-selling accessory. You can see the complete list of Amazon's best-selling game products here.

New Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Colors Finally Headed To North America

By Kevin Knezevic on Jan 06, 2018 03:10 am

A new pair of Joy-Con controllers for Nintendo Switch will soon be available. On Twitter, Nintendo announced it is finally bringing the Splatoon 2-themed neon pink and green Joy-Cons to North America this month.

While the Splatoon 2 controllers have been available in Japan since the online shooter launched last summer, the only way Switch owners could purchase them in the US was as part of the Splatoon 2 Switch bundle. This marks the first time the Joy-Cons will be available as a standalone release. You can take a look at their packaging below.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo hasn't announced an exact release date for the Splatoon 2 Joy-Cons, but they'll be available in stores "later this month." Likewise, the company hasn't confirmed how much the controllers will cost, but they'll presumably carry the same price tag as other Joy-Con sets, which retail for $80. A Splatoon 2 Switch Pro Controller was also available for a limited time, though that has since been discontinued.

Nintendo has released several different Joy-Con colors for Switch since the console launched. Along with the standard grey and neon red and blue Joy-Cons, a neon yellow controller was released alongside the colorful fighting game Arms last June. Nintendo also released a pair of red Joy-Cons with Super Mario Odyssey back in October, though as was the case with the Splatoon 2 Joy-Cons, they have thus far only been available in the US as part of the Mario Odyssey Switch bundle. With any luck, they'll also get a standalone release sometime soon.

Monster Hunter World PS4 Bundles And Special Controller Announced, But Only For Japan

By Kevin Knezevic on Jan 06, 2018 03:09 am

Along with revealing new details about Monster Hunter World during a Japanese livestream today, Capcom announced a slate of new accessories and merchandise themed around the upcoming game. These include a special Monster Hunter PlayStation 4 controller and console bundles--though sadly, they've only been confirmed for Japan thus far.

Coinciding with the launch of Monster Hunter World later this month, Capcom is releasing a special Rathalos Edition DualShock 4 controller for PS4. The limited-edition controller costs 6,480 yen (roughly $57) and comes in red with a Rathalos wing pattern on its grips. You can take a look at images of the Rathalos Edition DualShock 4 below.

In addition to the limited-edition controller, Capcom has announced a pair of Monster Hunter World PS4 bundles, which will likewise launch alongside the game later this month. The Monster Hunter World Starter Packs include either a black or white 500 GB PS4, as well as a copy of the game. Each Starter Pack bundle retails for 35,980 yen (about $318).

Capcom revealed many new details about Monster Hunter World during today's livestream. The publisher shared a new trailer (above) for the game showcasing the returning Elder Dragons and other new monsters that players will encounter. Additionally, Capcom announced a third PS4 beta for Monster Hunter World will take place later this month, on January 18. It will feature the same two environments and three monsters as the previous two PS4 betas, along with one new monster to hunt: the Nergigante.

Monster Hunter World releases of PS4 and Xbox One on January 26; the PC release will follow sometime this fall. Capcom will continue to support the game post-launch with free DLC and updates, the first of which will arrive sometime this spring and add a fan-favorite monster: the Deviljho. PS4 players will also get an exclusive gear set themed after Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Here's Everything New To GTA 5 For PS4, Xbox One, And PC This Week

By Chris Pereira on Jan 06, 2018 03:02 am

Regular updates to Grand Theft Auto V continue in 2018. Although the first weekly update of the year is not a massive one, Rockstar has released a cool new vehicle and announced some new discounts and extended bonuses that may get you to boot up the game on PS4, Xbox One, or PC.

GTA V's newest car is a rally vehicle, the Annis Savestra Sports Classic. It's available now through Legendary Motorsport, and while it looks to be a worthwhile ride on its own, it can get even better. Those with access to an Avenger or Mobile Operations Center have some optional upgrades for the Savestra, including mounted machine guns.

If you don't yet own a MOC, you can pick up the cab for 50% off its regular price from now through January 8. You can get also get 30% off the Coil Cyclone or Grotti Visione, or 25% off the Ocelot Ardent (a weaponized vehicle), the FH-1 Hunter helicopter, P-45 Nokota plane, and HVY APC (another weaponized vehicle). In the case of the latter three, the discount applies to both the buy-it-now and trade prices.

On the bonus side, Adversary modes Slashers and Occupy are awarding players with double GTA$ and RP until January 8. The Premium Stunt Race is Duel, with a restriction to Muscle-class vehicles, while the Time Trail is Up N Atom. The Premium Race hands out big GTA$ payouts to the top three finishers, while everyone gets Triple RP. The Time Trial offers GTA$ and RP for those who can beat the target time.

Destiny 2 Nightfall Strike Guide [Update]: The Inverted Spire Challenges, Modifiers

By Chris Pereira on Jan 06, 2018 02:34 am

Update: Due to the bug associated with A Garden World Nightfall strike, which prevented some players from gaining certain rewards, Bungie has changed the mission to The Inverted Spire. We have updated the text below to reflect the new mission. But please enjoy the video above of Erick Tay playing through the original Nightfall during our livestream.

It's the first week of the new year, and we've now gotten the first Destiny 2 weekly reset of 2018. This brings with it a new Nightfall Strike for players to try their hand at, along with a new Flashpoint on Io and a lineup of Eververse items to consider purchasing before The Dawning ends. Here's what to expect from this week's Nightfall, The Inverted Spire, on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

In terms of Modifiers, we again see the return of Momentum. As a reminder, this particular modifier forces players to keep moving forward to restore health and and shields. Additionally, Timewarp: Rings is active, which means you'll have to jump through several rings scattered around the Strike to gain more time.

That's especially true if you're hoping to finish the first of this week's Challenges. Speed of Dark is enabled, as always, and requires you to finish the Strike with at least five minutes left on the timer. Unbroken tasks you with making it through with fewer than three deaths. And in addition to those, The Floor Is Lava tasks you and your fireteam to not get hit by Protheon's fiery ground attack before defeating it.

As with any week, completing the Nightfall rewards you with Powerful Gear. The Nightfall is one of the only ways to obtain that level of gear, which is a reliable way to boost your Power level. This Nightfall will be available until the next weekly reset, which occurs at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET / 5 PM GMT on Tuesday, January 9 (4 AM AET on January 10).

The Nightfall is available now, but you'll be unable to try it--or anything else--for a period of time on Wednesday, January 3. Bungie has announced Destiny 2 maintenance and a new update will be deployed on that day, which will result in downtime for several hours. Meanwhile, The Dawning event continues and will come to an end on the same day as this Nightfall, January 9.

Top 10 Best-Selling PS4 Games On PSN For 2017 Revealed

By Kevin Knezevic on Jan 06, 2018 02:31 am

Now that 2017 is officially behind us, Sony has revealed the list of best-selling games on PSN from the past year. The list encompasses the most downloaded PS4 games and DLC throughout 2017, and while many of last year's biggest releases place prominently on the list, there are also a few surprises among them.

The No. 1 best-selling PS4 game in the US was Call of Duty: WWII, the latest installment in Activision's blockbuster franchise. It was followed by another popular shooter published by Activision, Destiny 2. Interestingly, the No. 3 spot was taken by Friday the 13th, while Horizon: Zero Dawn came in at No. 4. Another surprise was Grand Theft Auto V, which rounded out the top five despite being several years old at this point. Europe's top 10 list was largely similar, though the No. 1 spot was taken, unsurprisingly, by FIFA 18.

Call of Duty also dominated the US list of best-selling DLC; No. 1 was the Zombies Chronicles expansion for Black Ops III, while Call of Duty: WWII's season pass took No. 3. Destiny 2 was once again the runner up, with its Expansion Pass coming in at No. 2. New For Netflix In January 2018: More TV Shows, Movies, And Original Series

By Chris E. Hayner on Jan 06, 2018 02:25 am

A new year means a new selection of movies and TV shows arriving on Netflix. January is here, and this month, a number of films, shows, and specials will debut on the streaming service, including several Netflix Originals.

The most notable arrival is the Batman series of films. Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman & Robin are all now available to stream, having been added on January 1. Additionally, Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins will also debut. They were joined by all four movies in the Lethal Weapon series, National Treasure, and The Godfather trilogy.

No Caption Provided

When it comes to TV, January will bring new seasons of originals One Day at a Time, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Grace and Frankie, and The Adventures of Puss in Boots. Among other arrivals are all five seasons of Showtime's Episodes, the second season of Colony, and a new batch of Eastsiders episodes.

Here's What Monster Hunter World's First Free DLC Update Includes

By Chris Pereira on Jan 06, 2018 02:22 am

Capcom has indicated on a number of occasions that it will support Monster Hunter World with free post-release downloadable content. That includes the addition of new monsters to hunt, the first of which we now have some details about.

With World's release coming up in a few weeks, Capcom reiterated today that it has plans for "regular content updates, as well as major title updates for free." What it describes as the "first major title update" will launch at some point this spring. It introduces the Deviljho to the game, a monster we've seen in a number of previous entries that will feature some differences in World.

"The Deviljho must feed constantly and will devour anything in its way, even feeding on the largest of monsters with its massive jowls," Capcom explained. "This wild beast really is one for only the bravest of hunters to take on."

It's unclear if the Deviljho will be the only thing included in the update or how often we'll see new DLC packs released. Free DLC for the recent Monster Hunter entries on 3DS, such as Generations, have often consisted of gear based on crossovers with other game franchises--such as Mario, Sonic, Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, Fire Emblem, and Devil May Cry--along with bonus resources and items. In addition to PS4-exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn gear, we know Mega Man-themed equipment is also on the way to World.

Monster Hunter World releases for PS4 and Xbox One on January 26, followed by a PC version this fall. A final PS4 beta has just been announced alongside the release of a new trailer showcasing some of World's Elder Dragons. Capcom also revealed a limited-edition Monster Hunter PS4 controller and Starter Pack bundles, though those have only been announced for Japan so far.

Steam Awards 2017 Winners Announced And, Surprise, The Witcher 3 Is Still Winning Things

By Chris Pereira on Jan 06, 2018 01:37 am

Voting for the second annual Steam Awards recently concluded, and Valve has now revealed the winners. Although the categories are more unusual than what we're accustomed to seeing from end-of-year awards, that didn't stop the usual suspects from winning.

As you'll see, Steam Awards are not restricted to games released in 2017, and with good reason. Valve recently announced Steam's best-selling games for the year, and many of them, like Rainbow Six Siege, Grand Theft Auto V, and The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, are in some cases multiple years old.

In the Choices Matter category, which is meant to celebrate games that provide you with a range of freedom, The Witcher III came out on top, beating out the likes of Divinity: Original Sin II and Dishonored 2. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds won the Mom's Spaghetti category, which consisted of intense, stressful games like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and The Evil Within 2.

Garry's Mod, released in 2006, won an award
Garry's Mod, released in 2006, won an award

The Labor of Love award, for older titles with strong continued support, went to Warframe, beating out games such as Team Fortress 2 and Path of Exile. The Suspension of Disbelief category went to Rocket League, while Cuphead, Just Cause 3, and Stardew Valley won other awards. Cuphead was the only game to win more than one award this year, taking home both Best Soundtrack and Even Better Than I Expected. You can see the full list of winners below or on Steam.

Each category consisted of five games that Steam users could vote on. Those five were nominated by users previously, with categories each opening up for a single day during the just-concluded Steam winter sale.

Steam Awards 2017 Winners

  • Choices Matter -- The Witcher III: Wild Hunt
  • Mom's Spaghetti -- PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
  • Labor Of Love -- Warframe
  • Suspension of Disbelief -- Rocket League
  • The World Is Grim Enough, Let's Just All Get Along -- Stardew Valley
  • No Apologies -- The Witcher: Enhanced Edition
  • Defies Description -- Garry's Mod
  • Cry Havoc And Let Slip The Dogs Of War -- Just Cause 3
  • Haunts My Dreams -- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
  • Soul of Vitruvius -- Rise of the Tomb Raider

  • Best Soundtrack -- Cuphead

Smite's Newly Overhauled Conquest Map And New Character Revealed

By Chris Pereira on Jan 06, 2018 01:35 am

A number of changes and additions are on the way to Smite, developer Hi-Rez Studios announced this week. As part of Hi-Rez Expo 2018's opening keynote, some major updates for the MOBA have been revealed, including the game's next character and a revamped version of its Conquest map.

The new map is more than just a visual change, although that is part of it. This updated version is symmetrical, meaning your experience will be the same regardless of the side that your team calls home. Lanes and jungle paths are now identical on both sides, which lead designer AJ Walker says "balances the map and removes timing differences to each side. Overall, this creates a more consistent gameplay experience."

Art all around the map has also changed, as you can see in the images below, with monsters such as the Gold Fury getting "lore-inspired makeovers." More importantly, jungle fog makes a return, making it clearer what areas you have vision of. PC players will be able to test all of this out starting on January 17, when the map is released on the Public Test Server.

Coming before then is Smite's next character, Cerberus. He joins the existing roster of 92 gods very soon, as update 4.25 is slated for release on PC on January 9. A PS4 and Xbox One release date wasn't shared, but it should be coming soon as well. At some point in 2018, we'll also see new characters introduced from two new pantheons, Slavic and Voodoo.

In addition to Hi-Rez Expo, the Smite World Championships are now underway. PS4 owners with PS Plus can still get a bonus Smite pack with a bunch of free stuff, while those on Xbox One can pick up the Smite X Edition pack that grants a free character and skin.

Diablo 3 Brings Back Its Darkening Of Tristram, Diablo 1 Anniversary Event

By Chris Pereira on Jan 06, 2018 01:35 am

Diablo III's Darkening of Tristram, a limited-time event meant to celebrate the anniversary of the original Diablo's release, is live once again. Whether you're a fan of that game or someone simply looking to snag some Diablo III loot, it's worth checking out.

Similar to how it operated last year, when the event made its debut, Darkening of Tristram went partially live recently. Special cultists began appearing in-game in Adventure mode, but the real meat of the update goes live at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET on January 3 (12 AM GMT / 11 AM AET on January 4). At that point, slaying the cultists can open a portal that takes you to a 16-level dungeon where you'll encounter bosses and elements from the first Diablo.

More notably, however, this dungeon looks much different than the rest of the game. While Diablo III's basic gameplay remains intact, the graphics and sound effects get a retro makeover to resemble the original game, with even the UI being overhauled. Additionally, movement is locked to eight directions, as was the case in Diablo. You can see what this looks like in the video above. The mode was originally released to mark Diablo's 20-year anniversary.

No Caption Provided

You can play this with a new or existing character, although Blizzard recommends creating a new one to properly experience the event. Either way, working through the dungeon will allow you to earn unique portraits, pets, transmogrification designs, and more, some of which you can see in the gif above. There are also Achievements tied to the mode.

All of this is only available for a limited time. The event ends on January 30, though it'll likely return again next year if you miss out or aren't able to get your hands on all of the available rewards.

Fans Create New Super Mario Bros. Sequel With 80 Original Levels

By Patrick Faller on Jan 06, 2018 01:18 am

Fans have created a fresh sequel to the 2006 3DS hit New Super Mario Bros., complete with 80 new stages spread over eight maps, some new gameplay mechanics, and an original soundtrack. The game was designed with a combo of new assets and assets from the original game.

The game, called Newer Super Mario Bros DS, was made by the group Newer Team. They created it using the level editor New Super Mario Bros. Editor (NSMBe), a PC tool released long before Super Mario Maker. Check out the launch trailer below.

To play the game, you need to download the ROM, which is available on its website, and Newer Team says you will be able to patch your existing copy of New Super Mario Bros. to play on your own console. It's worth noting Nintendo has a history of shutting down fan-made games, like this Pokemon game or the 2D Zelda: Breath of the Wild project based on the Switch game's original prototype.

Newer Team is known for its previous fan project, Newer Super Mario Bros Wii, which features 128 new levels for the Wii game New Super Mario Bros Wii. It is playable on any homebrew-enabled Wii and still available for download on the group's website. As always, be wary of downloading any unofficial game content online.

Amazon Shuts Down Anime Strike Streaming Service

By Kallie Plagge on Jan 06, 2018 01:14 am

Amazon has shut down its paid anime streaming channel, Anime Strike, just short of a year after it launched. Amazon has automatically cancelled all Anime Strike subscriptions, and the Anime Strike library will be available through Amazon Prime Video starting today.

Prior to the shutdown, Anime Strike was one of Amazon's "Channels," video catalogs that fall outside of the regular Prime Video offerings and require an additional subscription. Anime Strike cost $5 per month on top of the $100-per-year Amazon Prime subscription.

Factoring in the Amazon Prime subscription, Anime Strike was more expensive than both Crunchyroll and Funimation, the two most popular anime-focused streaming sites. A basic Crunchyroll membership costs $7 per month, though you can watch many of its shows for free with ads, and Funimation costs $6 per month.

Anime Strike did not announce any exclusives for the winter 2018 anime season, and its Twitter account--which is now deactivated--was inactive for months.

Among Anime Strike's exclusives were Scum's Wish, CG series Land of the Lustrous, and Made in Abyss, which was one of GameSpot's top 10 anime of 2017.

Get Two Free Games With An Xbox One X Right Now

By Chris Pereira on Jan 06, 2018 01:07 am

Since its launch in November, deals on the Xbox One X have been few and far between. Microsoft launched a promotion giving away PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds with the purchase of the system, but otherwise, there haven't been many offers involving the new, more powerful Xbox One console. A new deal is now available, and while it doesn't make the system any cheaper, it does get you a pair of freebies.

Over on Newegg, the retailer is currently selling the Xbox One X for its usual price of $500, but with two free games thrown in. The first of these is Mass Effect: Andromeda, last year's RPG which was not received quite as warmly as earlier entries in the series but has improved through post-launch patches. The other freebie is Titanfall 2, the excellent 2016 shooter which has received an Xbox One X update, bringing visual enhancements for those playing on an X.

The offer is available from now until January 8, and shipping is free to most of the United States. However, take note that the bundle is non-returnable. If that free copy of PUBG sounds more desirable, it's still available for a short while longer through select retailers, as outlined here.

After a flurry of deals throughout the holiday season, game sales have slowed to some extent in the new year. That said, the latest batch of weekly Xbox One and 360 deals are live and feature some nice offers, such as Diablo III: Eternal Collection for $30. Additionally, Xbox Live Gold members can now grab the first of January's free Games With Gold titles, which include The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing III.

Some links to supporting retailers are automatically made into affiliate links, and GameSpot may receive a small share of those sales.

Game Of Thrones Author George RR Martin Gets Another TV Show

By Chris E. Hayner on Jan 06, 2018 12:59 am

While Game of Thrones isn't returning until 2019, this news might make the wait a little easier. Another series based on the works of George RR Martin has been ordered to series on Syfy.

Nightflyers, based on the 1980 Martin novella and the 1987 film, will star Gretchen Mol, Eoin Macken, David Ajala, and Brian F. O'Byrne. An official synopsis of the series reads, "Nightflyers follows eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard The Nightflyer--a ship with a small tightknit crew and a reclusive captain--in the hope of making contact with alien life. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place they start to question each other--and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought."

The story sounds like a complete departure from Game of Thrones. For fans who are unfamiliar with Martin's work outside of the HBO series, Nightflyers was first released in 1980, before being included in a short story collection in 1985.

Martin will serve as executive producer on the new series, alongside Jeff Bruhl (Jacob's Ladder), Gene Kleinn (Suits), David Bartis (Suits), Doug Liman (American Made), and Daniel Cerone (The Blacklist), who will also serve as showrunner. While the series will air on Syfy in the United States, it will be available on Netflix internationally.

A release date for Nightflyers has not been revealed. Place your bets now on whether it will premiere before The Winds of Winter finally arrives in bookstores.
