Game Of Thrones Episode 6 Photos Refuse To Spoil The Season 8 Finale

By Chris Pereira on May 15, 2019 11:53 pm

We're just a few days away from the end of Game of Thrones. Season 8, Episode 6 premieres this Sunday, May 19, marking the end of both this abbreviated season and the show overall. Following the preview trailer that debuted right after Episode 5, HBO has now released photos from the next episode--but they're a bit different than usual. Spoilers ahead.

HBO is usually quite reticent to spoil the upcoming episode with its previews; these aren't exactly modern movie trailers giving away major story beats and moments. The brief Episode 6 teaser kept the specifics to a real minimum, and now the preview photos are doing the same. Not only are there just two, which is less than we're accustomed to seeing, but they don't give away anything that wasn't already in the trailer.

The first of the two photos features Tyrion, who can be seen standing amongst the rubble in King's Landing. He doesn't look particularly pleased, just as you'd expect; he put his support behind Daenerys and believed in her, and he even put his life at risk to free Jaime in the hopes of preventing a massacre of innocents in the city. Dany opted to go Mad Queen instead, and now Tyrion is faced with having to live with this reality that Varys tried to stop.

No Caption Provided

The second photo matches up with a shot from the preview trailer. Dany, standing victorious on the edges of the burning city, faces away from us with her back to the camera as her army stands in formation all around her. They appear to be in full support of her, and we know from the preview trailer that the Dothraki in particular seem pleased with the outcome of the battle. But we still haven't seen Dany's face in Episode 6, or really, since she made her fateful decision to destroy the city. Seeing if she has any remorse will have to wait for this Sunday.

In the meantime, we have Episode 6 theories about where things in the finale and an Episode 5 breakdown. But with the way things have already played out, we know Game of Thrones exists in its darkest timeline.

The Division 2 Title Update 3 Patch Notes Revealed; First Raid Launching Tomorrow

By Jordan Ramée on May 15, 2019 11:32 pm

Ubisoft has released the full patch notes for the latest update to The Division 2, Title Update 3. The major piece of content included in the update is Operation Dark Hours, The Division 2's first raid, but new features, apparel, and quality-of-life changes are included in Title Update 3 as well.

Operation Dark Hours is an eight-player raid available for those who've reached World Tier 5 and defeated Tidal Basin. The raid sends you and your team up again the Black Tusks, who have taken over the Washington National Airport. "Teamwork, collaboration, and adaptation will be necessary to defeat the Black Tusk," The Division 2 community manager Johan LindholmMore wrote in the Title Update 3 patch notes. Operation Dark Hours is scheduled to go live tomorrow, May 16 at 9:00 AM PT / 12:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM BST.

Ubisoft has announced that the first teams to complete Operation Dark Hours first will receive limited-time prizes. The very first team will have their team photo displayed in The Division 2's White House for all other players to see. Any team that completes the raid between May 16-23 will receive a cosmetic arm patch. If you can't pull together an eight-person team in time--which is a likely possibility considering the raid won't have matchmaking--you'll still be rewarded with a clan banner icon and a trophy just for completing the raid at any point in the future.

For Year 1 Pass owners, Title Update 3 adds the first two Classified Assignment missions. Completing them allows you to hear the stories behind the fall of DC prior to the start of The Division 2's campaign and also unlock backpack trophies. Title Update 3 also includes The Division 2's second Apparel event, which adds new outfits, masks, emotes, and weapon skins to the game.

The full patch notes for Title Update 3 can be viewed in the link above. We've gone ahead and listed the highlights below. The Division 2 is available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Three Unannounced Ubisoft Triple-A Games Releasing Early Next Year

By Steve Watts on May 15, 2019 10:48 pm

Ubisoft is making big plans for the coming year. The company revealed during its latest financial earnings that it still has three more unannounced triple-A games coming within the next fiscal year, teeing up a likely set of E3 2019 reveals. Each of them is slated for release by March 31, 2020.

Though the company was relatively quiet in its financial report on plans for these three games, it did drop a few intriguing clues. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said during the investor Q&A that each of the games are full-priced releases. The studio also seemed to suggest that the games will be different genres, calling them each "unique experiences" that occupy different spaces in the market. The Q&A also narrowed the release window to Q4, which suggests they'll release between January and March of 2020.

The three unannounced games were part of a slate of four games total coming in the fiscal year, one of which was announced last week: Ghost Recon Breakpoint. That game is a followup to Ghost Recon Wildlands, but offers a host of new mechanics and options.

Another possible game on Ubisoft's slate could be the next Assassin's Creed, which is rumored to take place in the Viking era. However, that game is said to be coming in 2020, and Assassin's Creed games usually target a fall release, which would put it outside these fiscal year plans. We also learned today that Skull and Bones, the pirate combat game, has been delayed.

That leaves at least two games unaccounted for in the next year. Those could include franchises like Watch Dogs or Splinter Cell, experimental one-offs like Steep, or even another partnership with Nintendo like Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. Ubisoft says we'll hear more about these games soon, which likely means during Ubisoft's E3 press conference.

Nintendo Switch Online's Free NES Games For May Now Available

By Kevin Knezevic on May 15, 2019 10:33 pm

Nintendo Switch's NES library continues to grow little by little. May's free NES games are now available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. This month brings three more classics to the hybrid console, as well as a special save state for one of last month's games.

Joining the lineup this month are Clu Clu Land, Donkey Kong Jr., and Vs. Excitebike, a two-player version of the classic racing game. Rounding out the new games is an SP version of Star Soldier, which was added to Switch's NES library in April. This version starts players off on stage 8 with a powered-up starship.

The NES library is one of the perks Switch owners get for subscribing to the Nintendo Switch Online service. It launched back in September 2018 with 20 games and has been updated every month since with new titles. In addition to the aforementioned Star Soldier, April brought Punch-Out and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels to the service, while March's additions consisted of Kid Icarus and StarTropics.

Individual NSO subscriptions run for US $4 / £3.49 / AU $6 for one month, US $8 / £7 / AU $12 for three months, and US $20 / £18 / AU $30 for one year. If you're interested in trying the service, you can grab a free year of NSO from Twitch Prime. Nintendo also offers a Family Membership, which covers up to eight Nintendo Accounts across multiple systems, for US $35 / £31.49 / AU $55. Other benefits for subscribing include the ability to play Switch games online, cloud save data backup for most games, and exclusive offers such as Tetris 99, which is free to download for NSO members.

Speaking of Tetris 99, the puzzle game recently received its first paid DLC. It costs $10 and introduces two offline modes, CPU and Marathon. Even those who don't have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription can download the DLC, but you'll need a membership in order to play Tetris 99 online against other players. The game's third Maximus Cup competition also takes place this week, from May 17-19. Players who rack up at least 100 points during that time will unlock a new theme based on the original Game Boy Tetris game.

Get Free Crunchyroll Premium For 30 Days With Twitch Prime, But Only For Limited-Time

By Jordan Ramée on May 15, 2019 09:30 pm

Crunchyroll has announced a team up with Twitch Prime to offer more anime-focused rewards for Twitch Prime subscribers. Starting today, 30 days of free Crunchyroll Premium will be offered to all Twitch Prime subscribers. This offer ends on June 16, so act while you can.

"While we constantly focus on delighting Crunchyroll fans, we also feel it's our responsibility to continue to proliferate the popularity of anime to new audiences," Crunchyroll head of partnerships Eric Berman said in a press release. "We pride ourselves on working with like-minded, fan-focused partners and are excited to offer all Twitch Prime members a free pass to Crunchyroll right in time for the huge spring anime season."

You can watch anime on Crunchyroll for free, but having a Premium subscription unlocks certain perks. The best one is getting all new episodes of every simulcast anime about an hour after they air in Japan, which is usually a whole week before non subscribers get it. A subscription removes all ads from every anime on the site as well, and unlocks specific discounts on items in the Crunchyroll Store. You get a 50% discount on home video titles within the first week of their launch, for example, and a 10% discount on apparel.

A little over half of the anime we recommended in our eight must-watch Spring 2019 anime series list are on Crunchyroll. Of the eight, the action-packed shonen Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, harem romantic comedy We Never Learn: Bokuben, slice-of-life Hitoribocchi no Marumaruseikatsu, classic remake Fruits Basket, and sports anime Cinderella Nine are all on Crunchyroll.

Saga of Tanya the Evil is also on Crunchyroll, so this Twitch Prime deal offers a chance to catch up on the series ahead of the release of the sequel movie. In our Saga of Tanya the Evil - The Movie review, I wrote, "Provided you've watched Season 1 of the anime, [Saga of Tanya the Evil - The Movie] is a satisfying continuation to one person's desperate struggle to one-up a god by ending a worldwide war, only for her to learn the price for her hubris. It introduces far too many characters to keep track of, though, opens on a scene that definitely didn't need to be included, and squanders most of its battles with incessant chit-chat from all those involved. But watching Tanya outsmart her opponents with sadistic glee is enjoyable fun, and her final fight with Mary is the best the anime has ever looked."

Anime isn't all you can get with a Twitch Prime subscription. For May 2019, all Twitch Prime subscribers will get five specific PC games for free. You have until May 31 to download them, but once you do, they're yours to keep forever. In order to own a Twitch Prime subscription, you need to be an Amazon Prime member and then link your Amazon account to your Twitch account.

Ubisoft's Skull & Bones Delayed Again, Skipping E3 2019

By Oscar Dayus on May 15, 2019 09:28 pm

Ubisoft's pirate game, Skull & Bones, has been delayed for a second time. The PS4, Xbox One, and PC game was initially scheduled for a 2018 release, before being delayed to financial year 2019/20. It has now been delayed again to "after 2019/20." Additionally, the game won't be shown at E3 2019, which takes place next month.

Ubisoft revealed the news today in an earnings report. The vague "after 2019/20" refers to financial periods, as opposed to calendar years, meaning the earliest Skull & Bones might now launch is April 2020. Explaining the delay, Ubisoft told GameSpot: "For new IPs, it is common to have evolutions of creative vision and this requires more development time."

The game's official Twitter account also published a short video talking about the delay and decision to skip E3. Producer Karl Luhe talks about making the game as good as possible and that Ubisoft remains committed to it. The video also features some behind-the-scenes looks at the development of the game. Luhe notes they'll be back "as soon as [they] can" with further updates on the game.

The naval combat game was first revealed at E3 2017, and we came away from both that and the following E3's demo feeling excited. The game is being developed by Ubisoft Singapore, the studio that made Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag's ship combat sequences.

There is also a Skull & Bones TV show on the way. On whether the game's new delay will affect the TV show, Ubisoft told GameSpot "the Skull & Bones TV series has no impact on the development of the game--and vice versa."

Ubisoft has quite a lot on the way. Beyond the recently announced Ghost Recon Breakpoint, it's now confirmed it has three unannounced, triple-A games coming early in 2020. It didn't share any details on what those games will be, although it seems likely that we'll learn about at least some of them during Ubisoft's E3 press conference next month.

Rick And Morty Season 4 Release Date Set For This Fall

By Steve Watts on May 15, 2019 08:37 pm

The gonzo animated comedy series Rick and Morty has finally announced a release window for its fourth season. In a brief Twitter announcement, the duo themselves announced Season 4 will premiere in November 2019. Though they sound a little unsure about which year it actually is, currently. A specific day was not confirmed, but you can check out the announcement video above.

We had previously heard about the Season 4 renewal, alongside word that the show will be getting a whopping 70 more episodes. Each season so far has been 10 episodes, so the order for 70 more could mean a full seven additional seasons, although that structure has not been confirmed. Regardless, we're essentially assured we have years and years of Rick and Morty ahead of us.

It's been a notoriously long wait for each new Rick and Morty season; Season 1 aired from 2013-14, while the most recent episode--the last of Season 3--came in October 2017. Getting through all 70 confirmed episodes won't take decades to complete, though, because the creators have committed to reducing the wait time between seasons. So far each season has been roughly two years apart, and now the wait between fresh episodes should be significantly reduced.

"I think we'll be able to move a little quicker," co-creator Justin Roiland told GameSpot last year. "We're not going to have these big, long gaps between seasons. We're going to just keep the machine going and schedule staggering vacations for people so we don't burn out. It's going to just be a perpetual production, which is exciting."

If you're still catching up on the show, or are already a die-hard fan, be sure to check out our collection of in-depth Rick and Morty breakdowns.

This news regarding Rick and Morty was just one of numerous announcements coming from the WarnerMedia 2019 Upfronts. Another big piece of news was that TNT is getting back into the wrestling business, as it will be the home for the upstart AEW. Like Season 4, AEW's weekly show will debut later this year.

World Of Warcraft's Rise Of Azshara Update Puts The Focus On Flexibility

By Steve Watts on May 15, 2019 08:30 pm

World of Warcraft's latest expansion has been raging on, with regular story events and content updates that tell the ongoing story of the Battle of Azeroth. Blizzard has now detailed the second major update, Rise of Azshara, which will take players to the hidden city of Nazjatar to face Azshara herself, along with the new city of Mechagon where gnomes have begun replacing themselves with cold machinery.

This expansion continues the story of Battle for Azeroth and focuses heavily on a wide array of character customization options. From the new Heart of Azeroth and Essences menu to a punchcard with sockets to greater flexibility for your mounts, Rise of Azshara is squarely focused on giving high-level players a greater degree of control. GameSpot spoke with technical director Frank Kowalkowski and senior game designer Jeremy Feasel about the ongoing story, the mechanical flexibility, and more.

Rise of Azshara continues the ongoing story of a massive war, but a new story trailer makes the focus much more personal. It features Thrall, attempting to live a peaceful life and discovering this is no longer possible. Feasel says that in the midst of this large conflict, the studio wanted to take a moment to pause and reconnect with these larger-than-life characters.

"One of the things we wanted to do was bring the storyline back home, back to family, back to the individual characters and races that make up Azeroth," Feasel said. "What are our faction leaders doing and what do they think about the state of the world? We check in with them periodically, but how do they feel about the actual war? It gives a chance to ground ourselves again, and remind ourselves what we are fighting for and who we're fighting for."

While the story's conclusion isn't in sight yet for players, Blizzard already knows where all of this is eventually leading and even how it will lead to the next major story event. Part of that simply comes down to the long lead time for developing new areas, mechanics, and equipment.

"It takes some time to develop content so we need to know where the story is going," Kowalkowski said. "We definitely know where this arc is going. We definitely know how that is going to dovetail."

Blizzard hopes that the story hooks and new mechanics, as well as checking in with beloved characters, it will sustain the game's success. The studio stopped reporting active subscribers in 2015, and the rise of other online games and genres like the loot shooter and battle royale mean it is no longer the uncontested king of the social-focused online game.

"[Players will] drop off for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it's hey, I moved or traveled overseas," Kowalkowski said. "I think what we do is try and create the most compelling game that we can. Rise of Azshara is in response to a lot of feedback that we received both internally and externally, in terms of wanting to provide players more agency, more choice."

Part of sustaining the game also means welcoming in players who have either lapsed for a long time, or even ones who have never played World of Warcraft before. With so much to do after 15 years, Rise of Azshara attempts to make the on-ramp smoother than ever and to allow players to catch up with their friends who may have already invested hundreds of hours into the game.

"Something that we are looking at especially with Rise of Azshara is making sure that characters don't lapse at any point upon their leveling scale; they can quickly get up to the point where they're playing with their friends in Nazjatar and Mechagon," Feasel said. "So if you're one of those players who stopped playing around the time the Tides of Vengeance came out, it's going to be easy for you to get your next level up to unlock your first Essence. So you're not lagging severely behind, you can jump in and start playing with them, start gathering essences right away."

Essences are one of the deeper customization systems being added in Rise of Azshara. The game also adds punchcards with colored sockets reminiscent of gems. It all has a feeling of familiarity for long-term players, and that comes from wanting to introduce more flexibility.

"I think all of these things are evolutions of things that we've done before, in a way that makes it feel like you have a lot of different ways to customize your character that is just purely item-level based," Feasel said. "So there's always some way for you to log in and figure out, okay, this is how I want to advance my character today. There's ten different ways for you to do that."

Other new additions are quality-of-life adjustments. Mount abilities, for example, let you equip your mount with other special attributes that they don't have by default. The specific example Blizzard cited was the Water Strider, which has the water-walking ability. With the new mount system, you can equip that ability on any mount. The studio was very frank about this as a response to a piece of player frustration, but it took a broader approach than the feedback necessarily required.

"We are looking at a situation where we heard two things from the community," Kowalkowski said. "One was, I'm sick of using the Water Strider everywhere and at the beginning of every expansion for the first six months. And the other thing, because water walking, felt like it was a very powerful ability at that point. And the response can be, well, we'll just take water walking over with their mount and that was actually one of the things we discussed.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7Gallery image 8Gallery image 9Gallery image 10Gallery image 11Gallery image 12Gallery image 13Gallery image 14Gallery image 15Gallery image 16Gallery image 17

"When we look at a system like that: how can we give that utility, but also give people what they asked for? I don't want to see the water walking mount all the time. Typically it's a lot of trying to hearing what the players are saying but identify what the problem is and then come up with a solution that's going to address the problem, rather than just hearing the feedback."

In terms of both mechanics and lore, the team doesn't show any sign of slowing. World of Warcraft is a hodgepodge of fantasy tropes and heroic conquest, and that flexibility gives the team lots of room to explore. The Battle for Azeroth is deadly serious, but even the Rise of Azshara expansion shows the duality of the world. Azshara's lair is dark and foreboding, while the lost city of Mechagon is often goofy and light-hearted. Blizzard feels this is the strength of its world.

"I think one of the interesting things about the Warcraft universe--we go to another planet and fight a titan god one day, and then other days you're rescuing pigs in Goldshire," Feasel said. "We can tell very different storylines. We can create very different characters. Probably one of the most fun parts of the making of World of Warcraft is lifting up a character from a nothing side-quest to be something fans really care about and follow and has a Hearthstone card made about her. It's something that we strive toward all the time because there are so many different characters and personalities in the world to draw from. I feel like we're just scratching the surface."

Rise of Azshara is scheduled to release this summer. World of Warcraft: Rise Of Azshara Update Opens Two New Areas, Tons Of Customization

By Steve Watts on May 15, 2019 08:30 pm

Blizzard recently revealed its release plans for World of Warcraft Classic and a nifty new 15th Anniversary Edition chock full of collectibles for fans of the long-running MMORPG. But the standard game is still going strong as well, and Blizzard has also detailed the next phase of World of Warcraft's Battle for Azeroth expansion, titled Rise of Azshara.

This second content update to Battle for Azeroth focuses primarily on the titular Azshara, a naga queen who swore allegiance to the Old Gods to save her people. As the new story begins, the ocean opens to reveal the naga capital Nazjatar where Azshara still rules her people. Inside, you'll meet up with two factions who are resisting her reign, the Unshackled and the Ankoan, and take part in a new 8-boss raid called Azshara's Eternal Palace--ultimately culminating with facing Azshara herself, naturally.

A second major area, the city of Mechagon, focuses on a different ruler entirely. King Mechagon went a bit mad with the power of machines and began replacing himself in pieces and insisting that his subjects do the same, making a new kind of augmented mecha-gnome. The Rustbolt Resistance resisted him, so when you find Mechagon you're thrust into the center of the conflict. You can take on the new Operation: Mechagon mega-dungeon to face the mad king himself. Finally, a new Heroic Warfront, Stormgarde, will be available for your warband.

A detailed new Heart of Azeroth menu lets you customize your character with Essences, which offer a wide array of buffs and active abilities to unlock. Plus the wonders of mechanical wizardry in Mechagon open up new stat-boosting options, like a trinket with colored punchcard slots--similar to the classic gem sockets. Gnomes and Taurens can also go on special quests to get Heritage armor.

New Mount Equipment lets you customize any mount with abilities. Specifically, Blizzard noted that this means all mounts will be able to water-walk, but you can equip any mounted ability that you already have unlocked, like slowfall or daze protection. You can also complete the new Pathfinder achievements to allow your mount to fly through Kul Tiras, Zandalar, Mechagon, and Nazjatar.

The Most Influential Games Of The 21st Century: Grand Theft Auto III

By Peter Brown on May 15, 2019 08:30 pm

Join GameSpot as we celebrate gaming history and give recognition to the most influential games of the 21st century. These aren't the best games, and they aren't necessarily games that you need to rush out and play today, but there's no question that they left an indelible impact on game developers, players, and in some cases, society at large.

Open-world games are not a modern phenomenon. Rudimentary though they appear in retrospect, there were numerous PC and console games released in the '80s and '90s that fit the description, offering an open structure and the freedom to explore at your will--and potentially at your peril. Still, the limits of game technology meant that these early examples, though enticing, were the exception rather than the rule. How the times have changed.

In 2019, it feels like an increasing percentage of AAA blockbusters are open-world behemoths, games so vast and chock-full of content that the sting of a $60 price tag is ever-so-slightly dulled. Some of these games benefit from having more for you to do, for having more enticing excuses to embody a powerful hero and extend your stay in their fascinating world. But there are other open-world games that are spread so thin that we're starting to see the folly of chasing content for content's sake. Modern open-world games can be both a gift and a blight, and we have Rockstar Games to thank for their prominence, all because of the revolutionary game, Grand Theft Auto III.

At the turn of the century, Rockstar was a recognizable if unremarkable label. The crime-sim GTA was there from the publisher's start, but in an era where 3D gaming was taking off, its modest top-down presentation did little to make it, nor the sequel that released two years later, stand out. With the release of GTA 3 in 2001, things took a dramatic turn for the series, for Rockstar, and for gaming at large.

GTA 3 was one big guilty pleasure wrapped up in a shiny next-gen bow. PlayStation 2 had been out for less than a year by the time GTA 3 released, and that timing meant it was in an excellent position to command the attention of an audience waiting for the next big thing. Critics immediately latched on. Jeff Gerstmann, former GameSpot reviewer and now Giant Bomb frontman, said, "Grand Theft Auto III is, quite simply, an incredible experience that shouldn't be missed by anyone mature enough to handle it." IGN's Doug Perry didn't mince words either. "The game is absolutely, insanely good," wrote Perry, "and is truly one of the best titles of the year, on PlayStation 2, or on any system."

As its name implies, GTA was always about being a criminal, but the distant camera and the score-based nature of the first two games abstracted the realities of your actions. GTA 3's in-your-face look at Liberty City elevated every act and heightened the thrill of every getaway. Enemies weren't small icons; they were people with discernable faces and lives, presumably, worth living. Sex, drugs, murder, mayhem--these aspects underpin GTA 3's identity, but none of that raw excitement would have come to the forefront in such a pronounced manner if not for the impressive tech driving the game's slice-of-life portrayal of a city in motion.

No Caption Provided

Liberty City wasn't just a large locale for a turn-of-the-century 3D game, it was also dense with little details between the lines that added up to the city's bigger cultural picture. It was a virtual, mini New York City; a vibrant caricature composed of lowbrow temptations, valuable secrets hidden in back alleys, and dashes of personality coming through the radio or from opinionated passersby. Though maybe not quite the "living, breathing world" that Leslie Benzies promised IGN back in 2001, Liberty City felt connected, and most importantly, kinetic.

Playing GTA 3 can be an infectious experience, especially when you embrace it as a sandbox for destruction. If you're ever in the need of a cathartic power trip, a set of cheat codes will give you control over your loadout, the weather, and even the behavior of NPCs. Unlock a Rocket Launcher, blow up every car in the vicinity, turn people against themselves, and why not, summon a tank out of thin air! Rockstar's reputation for delivering a compelling crime drama through great voice acting and animation was established in GTA 3, and it no doubt raised the bar for other developers working on cinematic stories. But in terms of unique influence, the secret sauce was the freedom to explore and your ability whip Liberty City into a frenzy that got under most players' skin.

GTA 3 arrived at the right moment, offered the right kind of technical and design innovation to captivate a massive audience, and ultimately set Rockstar on a path that would lead it to become one of the most powerful entities in the entire industry.

Unsurprisingly, mainstream media and lawmakers didn't care about the technical and artistic achievements that made Rockstar's interactive crime simulator possible--they only cared about the risque themes and hypothesizing how being immersed in them would influence impressionable youth. And really, it's not hard to understand why. The taboo topics in GTA 3 had long been "accepted" in other forms of media, but the interactive nature of games puts the responsibility of choice and consequence in your control, however virtual though the cause and effect may be. In GTA 3, you get to decide whether innocents live and die, and the worst that can happen as a result of running amok is that you get arrested by virtual officers before respawning back into the world with less cash in your pocket. You can even get around that meager penalty, if you wish, by reloading a save file, to even further silo away your responsibility.

No Caption Provided

GTA 3 did not, of course, transform a generation of players into hardened criminals. What it did, however, was permanently alter the gaming landscape. GTA 3's runaway success meant that publishers had a new market to chase, and the perfect excuse to tackle taboo themes. Some developers and publishers tried to copy GTA 3's success by sticking closely to the formula, but Rockstar remained the king of the open-world urban chaos--everyone else was just a runner up. That said, second place to GTA ain't that bad.

Saints Row is a series that thrived for years in GTA's wake, and with each new sequel, its developers veered progressively further into the absurd. It was successful enough, after four games in seven years, to make Wikipedia's list of best-selling video game franchises. Two other series on that list, Mafia and Watch Dogs, could also be attributed to the waves caused by GTA 3's ripple effect on the industry. You can also point to Lego City Undercover, Sleeping Dogs, The Simpsons: Hit and Run, Scarface: The World is Yours, The Godfather, and Crackdown as notable games that sprung from an industry desperate to bottle GTA's free-flowing, chaotic magic.

A new appreciation for virtual crime and violence aside, GTA 3's lasting legacy is having fueled our desire for open-world games in general. It was always inevitable that as technology progressed we would start to see bigger and more believable game worlds; GTA 3 simply hit fast-forward on the timeline. It's fair to bemoan the glut of open-world games that crop up from AAA studios today, especially when one seems open for no reason other than adding "value," but we are able to enjoy games like Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Horizon Zero Dawn because of years of accumulated knowledge that sprang from both early successes and failures alike.

No Caption Provided

The other side of GTA's success is Rockstar's success, and how much power it now wields over the entire industry. Case in point: Red Dead Redemption 2. Gaming's best-selling franchise, Call of Duty, traditionally gets a new entry in November every year. In 2018, with the impending release of RDR 2 (our 2018 Game of the Year), Activision moved its release date for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 back to the start of October. There's no hard evidence that the unusual (for Call of Duty) release date was set because of RDR 2, but when multiple publishers started to shift or announce new release dates shortly after Rockstar put the date on the calendar, the correlation speaks pretty loudly.

These days, it's hard to imagine gaming without GTA being a part of the equation. GTA 3 arrived at the right moment, offered the right kind of technical and design innovation to captivate a massive audience, and ultimately set Rockstar on a path that would lead it to become one of the most powerful entities in the entire industry. GTA 3's influence is all around us, and even though it might take years for Rockstar to make a new GTA entry, it's worth remembering, while playing any open-world game, that its existence is owed in some small part to the craving for open worlds GTA 3 instilled in us all those years ago.

Watch Out WWE, AEW Has A TV Show Coming To TNT And A Home For The Double Or Nothing PPV

By Mat Elfring on May 15, 2019 07:40 pm

Ever since the announcement of All Elite Wrestling putting together a television deal, fans of the upcoming promotion have wondered where it would be headed. With the AEW PPV Double or Nothing just 10 days away and a weekly show looming on the horizon, we now know that the promotion will be headed to TNT thanks to the WarnerMedia's upfronts.

The channel that was one of the two focal points for the "Monday Night Wars," when WWE and WCW were in a ratings war, will once again host a weekly wrestling program. As for the Double or Nothing PPV, the exclusive streaming rights went to B/R Live for the May 25 Las Vegas show. The pre-show, titled The Buy-In, will stream on WarnerMedia's and AEW's social channels. The deal will be a multi-platform experience, allowing viewers to watch the AEW weekly show on prime time television on TNT, streaming on B/R Live, and on PPV as well.

"Wrestling fans have wanted--and needed--something different, authentic and better for far too long," explained AEW CEO and president Tony Kahn. "AEW is answering the call. AEW is about more than wrestling. It's about a movement fueled by wrestling fans who have been underserved and perhaps even disappointed by what the industry has produced in recent years. AEW is rising to the occasion with Double or Nothing and today taking it a step further by partnering with WarnerMedia, which is as committed as we are to making wrestling fans the one and only priority. With WarnerMedia, AEW is poised globally to redefine wrestling as we know it today."

There is no news as of this writing when AEW's weekly TV series will begin, aside from "later this year." There have been reports that it will be a Tuesday night series, which won't directly compete with WWE, as Smackdown will be moving to Fridays on Fox this fall. Many have been looking forward to the new wrestling promotion, especially after all indie wrestler signings they've been making for months.

Make sure to come back to GameSpot on Saturday, May 25 for live coverage and a review of AEW's Double or Nothing. For now, check out what's inside the AEW Pro Wrestling Crate.

Another Pokemon Mobile Game Announced, Out Now In Some Regions

By Oscar Dayus on May 15, 2019 04:56 pm

From nowhere, The Pokemon Company has announced and released a new mobile game. Named Pokemon Rumble Rush, the free-to-play title is available now in Australia and is "coming soon" to the rest of the world.

Rumble Rush is a mobile entry into the brawler-focused Pokemon Rumble series. It was previously announced in 2017 under a different name--Pokeland--before disappearing into the abyss. The Pokemon Company has now re-revealed it and launched it simultaneously.

It appears Rumble Rush will include live updates, with the game's official Play Store description stating, "The islands and seas explored during your adventures change every two weeks." The mobile game is available to download now on Android in Australia; a worldwide release and an iOS version are listed as "coming soon" on the game's official website.

Rumble Rush is developed by Ambrella, the same studio behind the four previous titles in the Rumble series. This means Rumble Rush is not the same Pokemon mobile game teased by DeNA just recently.

Pokemon Sword and Shield for Nintendo Switch are also due to launch in the next few months; no release date has been announced, but they're scheduled to be released in 2019. We might learn more during Nintendo's E3 2019 Direct presentation, which kicks off on June 11 at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET / 5 PM BST (2 AM AET on June 12).

Horror Mangaka Junji Ito Talks Silent Hills Involvement

By Jeremy Winslow on May 15, 2019 04:27 pm

Hideo Kojima's Silent Hills was canceled in March 2015 due to conflicts between Kojima's team and publisher Konami. While most of the high-profile individuals involved have since offered their two cents on the matter--including filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim), who's had some choice words for the Japanese publisher--horror manga artist Junji Ito recently discussed his role with the project.

Ito, while at the Toronto Comics Art Festival this past weekend, was asked about his involvement with Silent Hills. His responses come via translation thanks to Twitter user MinovskyArticle.

Though he may not have had the opportunity to contribute his signature brand of body horror to the project, Ito got to see Pacific Rim (for free) and sang his heart out with both del Toro and Kojima.

Silent Hills was announced through 2014's P.T., a short, free PS4 playable teaser that confirmed Kojima was directing a new Silent Hill entry alongside del Toro and starring Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct) in the lead role. Kojima has since left Konami, pursuing game development under his independent studio Kojima Productions, which he founded in 2005 while still under Konami's umbrella.

Since publicly splitting from Konami in 2015, Kojima has announced the studio's first game, Death Stranding. "I'm embarking on a new challenge with a fresh slate," Kojima said of the split. "But I intend to keep pushing the creative envelope until the day I die."

Rockstar Games Buys India Studio Dhruva Interactive

By Jeremy Winslow on May 15, 2019 04:23 pm

The oldest video game company in India, Dhruva Interactive, has been purchased by Rockstar Games from Starbreeze Studios for $7.9 million. According to a post on the company's official website, Dhruva, which was founded by Rajesh Rao in Bangalore in 1997, "was India's first ever game development studio." Starting as a five-man team, the company grew to over 300 employees "specializing in every aspect of art and design." Since then, Dhruva has contributed to a number of high-profile, AAA games, including Arkane Studios' Prey, Insomniac Games' Marvel's Spider-Man, Rare's Sea of Thieves, SIE Bend Studio's Days Gone, and many more.

Dhruva will now get folded into Rockstar India, which houses approximately 500 employees "already working in Bangalore on Rockstar's ground-breaking games."

"Dhruva Interactive has been a beacon of Indian game development for decades and we are excited to bring them into the Rockstar family," said Rockstar India's studio manager Daniel Smith. "The addition of the Dhruva team to the existing talent at Rockstar India will expand the studio's capabilities and reinforces our belief in and commitment to the local development community."

Rao, who serves as the company's CEO, shares Smith's sentiment and is excited about the acquisition. "Rockstar Games are the undisputed leaders of innovation and creativity in modern game development," Rao said. "Dhruva Interactive was founded with the aim of creating a world-class game development community in India, and so bringing the Dhruva team under the Rockstar Games label is further proof that we have succeeded in creating a talented team that can contribute to the best games in the world while helping to create a thriving local game developer community in India."

Prior to the purchase, Dhruva was acquired by Starbreeze in 2016. Starbreeze is most well-known for 2007's The Darkness, 2013's Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and Payday 2, and last year's OVERKILL's The Walking Dead.

While the sale is "expected to close in the coming weeks," whatever projects Dhruva is currently working on will remain unchanged and proceed uninterrupted.

Fortnite Update 9.01 Patch Notes: John Wick Leak, Tactical Assault Rifle, More

By Oscar Dayus on May 15, 2019 03:30 pm

Fortnite updates continue to arrive at their usual pace, and the latest patch, v9.01, adds a new weapon and more. The tactical assault rifle was previously leaked, but now we have confirmation it's real--and we also know just how deadly it is. The update is available now on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. Read on for the full patch notes and to see what else is new.

Perhaps most notable is what's not explicitly in this update or the patch notes: John Wick. With John Wick 3 arriving in theaters this week, the character's house was added to the map as part of last week's Season 9 update. Combined with some leaks, it looked as if a John Wick-themed skin and event were coming to the game, not unlike what we saw with Avengers: Endgame in April. Sure enough, with the 9.01 patch out now, datamining has further confirmed that a John Wick skin and limited-time mode are coming. With the movie releasing on Friday, you can likely expect to see it soon.

As for what you will find in the game right now, there's the new tactical assault rifle, which is a fully automatic rifle with a 30-round magazine. It can be obtained from floor loot, chests, supply drops, and vending machines in rare, epic, and legendary variants. The gun deals 22/23/24 damage, depending what rarity you're carrying, and it also carries a headshot multiplier of 1.75. The trade-off of this new gun is that the combat SMG has been vaulted, meaning it is no longer available in-game.

No Caption Provided

Elsewhere in the update, The Baller has been nerfed. The hamster ball has seen its health cut from 200 to 150, as developer Epic Games says the vehicle "still has a little too much defensive agency." It's been an issue ever since it was first released, with Epic making numerous tweaks to get it in a better place. Also nerfed was the Drum Gun, which now deals less damage, while the Compact SMG has been vaulted, meaning it's been removed from the game for now.

For more on the Battle Royale changes in update 9.01, take a look at the patch notes below; you can see the full patch notes for Creative and Save the World on Epic's blog.

Fortnite Season 9 started just recently, introducing new challenges, skins, and more. We also know there'll be a Fortnite summer block party starting right after E3.

Fortnite: Battle Royale Update 9.01 Patch Notes

Weapons And Items

  • Tactical Assault Rifle
    • Available in Rare, Epic, and Legendary variants.
    • Available from Floor Loot, Chests, Supply Drops, and Vending Machines
      • Fully Automatic
      • 30 Round Magazine
      • Deals 22/23/24 damage
      • Headshot Multiplier of 1.75x
      • This weapon has a tight spread in close quarters but is less effective at long range when compared to other Assault Rifles.
  • Reduced Baller health from 200 to 150
    • The primary goal of the Baller is to provide fun and exciting mobility. We feel that it still has a little too much defensive agency - this change should reduce the effectiveness there while not impacting its strengths.
  • Drum Gun adjustments
    • Reduced base damage from 26/27 to 22/23
      • Since its unvaulting, the Drum Gun effectiveness has been slightly higher than we wanted. This change should reduce its combat effectiveness while still retaining its flavor.
  • Vaulted Compact SMG
    • Due to the recent addition of the Drum Gun and the brand new Tactical Assault Rifle, we wanted to reduce the availability of high rate-of-fire weapons.

Gameplay

  • Slipstream adjustments
    • Slipstreams no longer block building.
      • Trying to build up to get into a Slipstream should be an easy & intuitive experience. We noticed some cases where players would build up to the Slipstream, but due to build restrictions would take a 'leap of faith' and not make the jump. This should make getting into a Slipstream easier.
    • Players flying in a Slipstream will destroy player built objects when they collide.
    • Slipstreams are now disabled after storm phase 5.
      • We've seen a number of cases where Slipstreams caused issues during late game circles - primarily around getting pulled into the storm unexpectedly. Since the value of Slipstream mobility is limited in those scenarios, we felt it's better to simply disable them.

Performance

  • Improvements made to level streaming performance on all platforms.
    • This will reduce cases of buildings not loading in.
  • Physics optimizations to improve performance in conduits

There Are Now Three Star Wars TV Shows In Development

By Eddie Makuch on May 15, 2019 10:44 am

In addition to Iron Man director Jon Favreau's new Star Wars TV show The Mandalorian and the one starring Rogue One actor Diego Luna as Cassian Andor, a third Star Wars TV program for Disney+ is in the works.

Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed this during an presentation today where he also announced that the next Star Wars movie after Rise of Skywalker will be from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff.

The Mandalorian follows the story of a bounty hunter played by Game of Thrones and Narcos actor Pedro Pascal, while the other, untitled series with Luna follows the story of Cassian Andor and the droid K-2SO, who is played by Alan Tudyk.

As for the third Star Wars show? Iger confirmed that it will be released before the new Star Wars film in 2022, but that's all he had to say.

"My guess is there probably will be at least one more live-action series that we produce for Disney+, a Star Wars series, before we release the next film," the executive said, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. "I believe these TV series will be extremely popular for Star Wars fans and very very valuable to Disney+ while we gear up for the next set of films."

The mainline Star Wars movie series is going on hiatus after December's Rise of Skywalker, and it won't return until 2022's new film from Weiss and Benioff. The Mandalorian will premiere in November through Disney+, while the Andor/K-2SO show will follow in 2021.

Disney+ will also host new Marvel TV shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision, as well as new shows based on Hawkeye and Loki. Disney+ will also have lots of Fox programming following its acquisition of the company, including Seasons 1-30 of The Simpsons.

Disney+ is priced at $7 USD/month, which is less than Netflix.

PUBG Mobile Update Adds New Feature To Help Promote "Healthy Gaming"

By Eddie Makuch on May 15, 2019 09:24 am

In an effort to help "promote healthy gaming behaviors," PUBG's mobile version has introduced a new "Gameplay Management" system. Designed for people under the age of 18, the new system will send pop-ups to players that remind them to take a break.

Under the terms of the new system, players under the age of 18 are required to "acknowledge a gaming advisory" before they're able to boot the game. At certain time intervals, which were not mentioned in the press release, pop-up notifications will appear to remind youngsters to "rest or stop the game."

This new Gameplay Management system is live in Indonesia, India, Nepal, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. It will be released in other markets later, in stages.

According to the developer, PUBG Mobile is among the first mobile games to feature such a system. "As PUBG mobile grows into one of the world's most trending mobile games, it is devoted to providing a better gaming environment and being proactive in building a balanced and sustainable online gaming ecosystem," publisher Tencent said.

Tencent executive Vincent Wang said the game wants to allow players to "make informed choices" when it comes to how much time they spend playing PUBG mobile. "Today's announcement is a proactive step in ensuring that hundreds of millions of players worldwide can continue to enjoy PUBG mobile in a sustainable manner," Wang said.

Tencent will look into player feedback and make necessary adjustments over time as the system is released globally. The company is also undertaking educational measures to inform players about why they should care about the Gameplay Management system in the first place.

There is no word yet on if the Gameplay Management system will ever be launched for PUBG's other editions on PC and console.

In other PUBG news, Tencent recently closed the game in China and replaced it with a a strange, patriotic version.

Movie Where Ryan Reynolds Discovers He's A Character In A Video Game Has Started Filming

By Eddie Makuch on May 15, 2019 06:48 am

Production has officially begun on the upcoming video game movie "Free Guy," starring Ryan Reynolds. He plays a bank teller who realizes he is actually a background character in a video game called Free City. Somehow he learns that the developers of the game are planning to shut it down, and he embarks on a quest to save it. It sounds pretty great.

Free Guy is directed by Shawn Levy, who directed Night at the Museum and several episodes of Stranger Things. The film also stars Taika Waititi, Joe Keery, Jodie Comer, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Lil Rel Howery.

The film is shooting in the Boston area, according to Collider. Comer, who was praised for her performance in Killing Eve, plays a character named "Molotov Girl" who works with Reynolds to save the game.

The story sounds similar in part to The Truman Show, in which Jim Carrey's character discovers he's actually the star of a TV show about his own life. Reynolds and Waititi are known for their comedic acting, and we can only imagine what they'll think up for Free Guy.

Notably, Free Guy is among the first Fox films to shoot following Disney's acquisition. The movie comes to theatres on July 3, 2020.

This of course is not Reynolds' first video game movie. He is the voice of Pikachu in the Pokemon movie, Detective Pikachu, which is doing very well at the box office right now.

This Game Of Thrones / Metallica Mashup Is A Great Soundtrack To Episode 5

By Eddie Makuch on May 15, 2019 05:56 am

Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 5, "The Bells," featured a shocking twist--and now the key sequence has been edited by a fan with Metallica's "For Whom The Bell Tolls" over it.

SPOILERS BELOW.

No Caption Provided

In the episode, Daenerys decides to torch King's Landing, even after the city surrendered. The move shocked fans, as the once merciful leader descended into her new role as the Mad Queen. The sequence was horrifying. King's Landing burned by the dragon Drogon, with its innocent inhabitants screaming for their lives and bloodshed abounding. It was terrifying.

Now, Reddit has set the storming of King's Landing to Metallica's classic song "For Whom The Bell Tolls," and it works surprisingly well. Besides matching up with the title of the episode, For Whom The Bell Tolls already feels like a battle song with its heavy, building riffs that culminate in a soundtrack that seems fitting for the death and destruction in the show.

The line, "Take a look to the sky just before you die / it's the last time you will" also has particular resonance and impact. Have a look:

"The Bells" set a new ratings record for Game of Thrones with 18.4 million viewers. The episode was divisive, and for more, you can check out GameSpot's review of Game of Thrones: "The Bells."

The Simpsons Predicted This Game Of Thrones Season 8 Twist Two Years Ago

By Eddie Makuch on May 15, 2019 05:25 am

The Simpsons has done it again: the show accurately predicted the future, this time in relation to a big Game of Thrones Season 8 twist. This time, it's done so with a 2017 episode that was a pretty clear send-up of HBO's wildly popular show, which saw a major development in its penultimate episode.

GAME OF THRONES SPOILERS FOLLOW BELOW.

No Caption Provided

In Episode 5, "The Bells," Daenerys torches King's Landing with her dragon, Drogon; she destroys the city and kills its innocent civilians in a move that few saw coming amid her turn to becoming the Mad Queen.

As it turns out, the 2017 Simpsons episode, "The Serfsons," also showed a dragon destroying a city with its fire-breathing skills. The episode was a spoof of sorts of Game of Thrones, and it even featured the voice of Jaime Lannister actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from Game of Thrones.

Dany's turn was predicted by some fans, and there arguably was evidence pointing to this potential outcome in the show, but it nonetheless remains a surprising turn. Regardless, this is far from the first time The Simpsons has accurately predicted something. A Season 11 episode predicted Donald Trump would become president while a Season 10 episode stated that Disney would buy Fox. These seemingly strange things ended up happening in real life.

"The Bells" set a new ratings record for Game of Thrones with 18.4 million viewers. The episode was divisive, and for more, you can check out GameSpot's review of Game of Thrones: "The Bells."

Last Of Us 2 Dev Looking To "Close Out" Development

By Eddie Makuch on May 15, 2019 04:50 am

It looks like The Last of Us: Part II might be almost finished. Co-game director Anthony Newman said on Twitter that developer Naughty Dog is looking to hire people to help "close out" the long-awaited PlayStation 4 game. That wording suggests that development might be nearing an end.

That being said, the "close out" period for The Last of Us: Part II might not necessarily happen quickly. Still, the fact that the game's co-director is using that terminology suggests the title is indeed at least entering the final phase of development.

It's also worth mentioning that Newman never even mentions The Last of Us: Part II in his tweet, though his reference to closing out a project is no doubt related to that title. Naughty Dog has no other announced projects in the works.

Naughty Dog vice president Neil Druckmann said back in April that Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson completed their shoots for Joel and Ellie, respectively. He said The Last of Us: Part II contains the "most ambitious cinematic shoot we've ever done."

No release date, or even a release window, has been announced yet for The Last of Us: Part II. The parody website The Onion recently posted a silly story that said the game would launch in 2019, but Naughty Dog responded by saying it would share more information when it's ready. For more on the much-awaited PS4 game, check out everything we know about The Last of Us: Part II.

Ordinarily, this would be an exciting time of year for PlayStation fans eager to learn more about what's coming next. However, Sony is not attending E3 2019 in June, so if the company has any news to announced about The Last of Us: Part II or any other projects, it will come elsewhere.

The Last of Us: Part II is coming to PS4, but the PS5 will be backwards compatible with PS4 games, so Naughty Dog's title will play on the new system as well.

In other news, one of The Last of Us: Part II's designers has joined the new Xbox studio, The Initiative.

The New Stranger Things Lego Set Literally Turns Everything Upside Down

By Mat Elfring on May 15, 2019 04:30 am

Over the years, Lego has done some pretty incredible-looking sets based on familiar properties. Now partnering with Netflix's most popular series, the recently revealed Stranger Things set, titled "The Upside Down," is hard to wrap your mind around.

Looking more like a reflection off of a lake rather than a traditional set. The Upside Down model of the Byers' house from the first season of Stranger Things can actually flip between the real world and the terrifying Upside Down where the Demogorgon searches for a lost Will Byers.

It's hard to actually explain the model kit, and to grasp it, you'll need to actually see it. Below, you'll see pictures for the latest set, which you can actually flip over.

Available directly at the Lego Shop on June 1 (May 15 for Lego VIP members), the Byers' house will cost $200 and is made up of over 2,000 pieces. The set contains eight figures, all of which have their own accessories: Eleven, Mike Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair, Dustin Henderson, Will Byers, Joyce Byers, Chief Jim Hopper, and the Demogorgon.

The Byers' house consists of the front porch, living room, dining room, and Will's bedroom, while the Upside Down version of the house has dilapidated and eerie versions of the same rooms. The set also comes with Hopper's police jeep as well.

Season 3 of Stranger Things will hit the streaming service on July 4, and the newest season will take place during the summer vacation of 1985. As you've probably seen in the trailer, a mall is one of the big locations, and who doesn't love a mall during the '80s? Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Noah Schnapp (Will), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Sadie Sink (Max), Natalia Dyer (Nancy), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan), Winona Ryder (Joyce Byers), and David Harbour (Hopper) will all be returning.

Marvel's X-Men Are Getting A Full Reboot Care Of Jonathan Hickman

By Meg Downey on May 15, 2019 03:39 am

Following Disney's Fox buy out and with both X-Men: Dark Phoenix and the much-delayed New Mutants on the way, the future of the X-Men is a little mysterious, though hopefully not for too much longer.

Even if you're not overly familiar with Marvel Comics, there's a good chance you've heard the name Jonathan Hickman at least in passing in these last few months. He's one of the major architects of Infinity, the crossover event that inspired whole swaths of both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and introduced the concept of Thanos' Black Order. Hickman's run on the main Avengers title lasted around 3 years and helped redefine the team for modern audiences all over again--both on page and screen.

And now, another major arm of the Marvel universe is primed to get the Hickman treatment as he returns to Marvel for a major X-Men overhaul. Starting with two weekly, 6-issue mini-series called House of X and Power of X, Hickman plans to kickstart a brand new era of X-Men stories that will unfold across the Marvel universe in waves.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, the writer detailed his plans. "We needed to sell the idea that this is what we're going to be doing for the next few years. So if you want to read X-Men books during the run from late-July through September, House of X and Powers of X are the only new X-books available and everything that's going to follow is based on them. We wanted to be clear to the fans, to the stores, and just as importantly, to the creators who are going to be staffing these books in the future. We wanted the message to be very clear: This is a whole new era for the X-Men. This is what we're doing now."

The X-Men lines are no stranger to reboots and new issue number #1s. The latest volume of Uncanny X-Men was relaunched in 2018, hot on the heels of companion books like X-Men: Blue and X-Men: Gold, both of which kicked off with new #1s back in 2017; and X-Men: Red which concluded its mini-series run last year as well. Add to the list the X-Men adjacent Major X mini-series, still currently in progress and things get even more complicated.

Put plainly, the X-arm of the Marvel Universe is not currently the most accessible line of comics around. Though, as Hickman hopes, that will be soon to change.

"One, House of X, is a story about a pivotal month in the history of the X-men where everything changes for mutants on Earth," Hickman elaborated. "And the other, Powers of X, is a story about the history of mutants in the Marvel Universe. It works as a series of reveals and revelations where each issue of HOX that follows POX--and vice versa--makes you reinterpret the issue you had previously read."

No Caption Provided

Both 6-issue series will eventually culminate in what Hickman calls "wave 1" and "wave 2" of the rebooting initiative. "At the conclusion of our 12 weeks of HOX and POX, we'll be launching an entirely new universe of X-books. Some will be traditional fare, some carry through on ideas presented in HOX and POX. Some books are completely new concepts. I, personally, will be writing the ongoing flagship X-book," he said. "[...] We also just finished our plans for our 'Wave 2' books that will debut in 2020 and we're getting ready to hire talent for those."

House of X #1 and Power of X #1 hit stores on July 24 and July 31 respectively, everywhere comics are sold.

All Games Confirmed For E3 2019: Cyberpunk 2077, Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, Halo Infinite

By Matt Espineli on May 15, 2019 03:39 am

E3 is known for being one of the biggest showcases for games every year, and E3 2019 is looking to follow in that tradition. While this year is noticeably more low key than the larger displays of E3's past, the show is still the primary venue for developers to announce their latest projects. There are sure to be many games that we don't know about, but let's go through all of the ones that have been confirmed for the convention so far.

Like previous years, E3 will last about three days going from June 11-13. A smattering of press conferences from the industry's biggest companies are scheduled to precede the show. The first of this year will once again be Electronic Arts' EA Play event, which will be spread out across a few days over several livestreams. You can expect updates on the publisher's biggest games, like Apex Legends and Anthem, as well as news about its latest sports games. However, the most anticipated game in its docket is undoubtedly Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, a new game based on the massively popular sci-fi franchise made by Titanfall developer Respawn Studios.

Nintendo will appear in typical fashion with its E3 lineup mostly unknown until going live with its Direct Presentation. Microsoft will also be making a big splash due to Sony being absent from this year's show; we're likely to hear more about some the big new games it has in development from the various studios it acquired in the past couple of years. On the other hand, you have game publishers like Bethesda, Ubisoft, and Square Enix who are all prepared to reveal new details around its existing franchises and previously announced games.

There's sure to be a lot more on display, and there's always a good chance of a surprise. After all, Google did reveal that more details around its upcoming Stadia technology would come sometime this summer, which could easily be E3 2019. And while we know Sony won't be at the show, Death Stranding director Hideo Kojima did tease via Twitter that he was working on a new trailer. Regardless, read on for the full list of confirmed games so far, and check back as we continue to update in the lead-up to the show.

Machamp's Speedo Is Actually Skin, & Other Facts From Detective Pikachu's Pokemon Designers

By Rafael Motamayor on May 15, 2019 03:35 am

The very first live-action Pokémon movie is now out after years in development, and from the moment the first trailer debuted, people were surprised to see how charming Detective Pikachu looked. But other than Pikachu talking and sounding not like Danny Devito--as some fans wanted--but like Ryan Reynolds, what really made an impression in that first trailer was arguably the new look of the Pokémon.

The world of Pokémon is filled with a variety of different creatures, each with a unique design. From the scaly and terrifying Charizard, to whatever nightmare Mr. Mime came from, the biggest surprise in Detective Pikachu may have been that Pikachu looks undeniably furry. It's not that Pikachu and the other furry Pokemon look bad--but up until this point, they've always been portrayed looking, uh, smoother.

Naturally, we jumped at the opportunity to talk about Pokémon fur, whether Pokémon like Machamp wear clothes, and just what the hell Mr. Mime is with Detective Pikachu visual effects supervisor Erik Nordby.

"We didn't really have another choice," Nordby told us regarding furry Pikachu. "The Pokémon Company didn't want it to have fur, and they wanted something that felt more like a horse, with very fine and short hair. But look at it. There is no real-world equivalent of a Pikachu. It just looks unnatural and a bit disturbing, since that type of yellow skin doesn't really exist anywhere. So we built the texture and showed the company what Pikachu could look like with fur, and eventually they grew to love it."

Having to communicate with a media conglomerate like The Pokémon Company, and across two languages, wasn't an easy task. Nordby told us that they had a slew of rules for what Pokémon could and couldn't look like, but one mandate was key: "They were very conservative when it came to changing the original designs, and 'kawaii,' or cute, was the word of the day," Nordby said. Indeed, Pokémon fans know that in both the anime and the games, even the scariest or strangest Pokémon still make you want to hug them (with a few exceptions, like the one that's just a garbage bag, or the ones you actually want to eat, like the ice cream cone Pokemon Vanilluxe).

This mandate of cuteness became the hardest and most important part of the design process. For Nordby and his team, the really challenging part was sticking to that while also making sure the Pokémon looked like living creatures. "We definitely wanted them to look realistic and like they could survive in our world," Nordby said. "The ratios and proportions of cartoon Pokémon bodies are biologically wrong, so we wanted to make sure the Pokémon looked like they could eat, find shelter, communicate, and that their bodies could fit actual organs and hold the weight of their bodies. We figured out their whole anatomy, with muscle systems, bone structure, the size of the eyeballs, you name it."

What really helped the Detective Pikachu team create the new designs was to just stick to the original, at least their general shape. "The most helpful thing for us was being able to look at the original sketches from Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori," Nordby explained. "We used the basic silhouette of each Pokémon, and basically stayed within that frame while still changing the texture, size of eyeballs, and other things."

Nordby and his team also looked at real animals in order to have a reference from which to build the Pokémon designs. "We traveled to zoos all over and built an entire catalogue of animals we could reference." He said. As fans know, a fair amount of Pokémon have direct counterparts in our world, so the Detective Pikachu team used this to their advantage for Pokémon like Pancham, which is basically just a panda with a bigger head. For others, though, the task was harder.

"Pikachu was difficult, especially because of how important it is for fans," Nordby told us. "We started with various rodents like rabbits and wombats. We did a lot of different tests with different animals for both looks and also movement. In the end we took some basic things from actual animals but built the rest from scratch; otherwise, you lose what makes Pikachu special."

According to Nordby, another big rule of The Pokémon Company was regarding clothing, mostly that Pokémon do not wear clothes (other than a detective hat, apparently). The visual effects supervisor recalls showing the company their initial design for Machamp, a fighting-type Pokémon seen in the movie directing traffic, who normally wears a wrestling belt and a speedo--except it is actually neither of those.

"They told us it looked like Machamp was wearing clothes, and they absolutely can't wear any clothes," Nordby said. "Then we asked about what that was, since it looks like Machamp is obviously wearing speedos and a wrestling belt. And they answered that it was actually just part of its skin. We replied, 'well, if it's just skin, why is it shiny?'" Nordby argued that while the rules may seem arbitrary, there's a reason why this brand has become such a success.

Then there was the issue with Mr. Mime, a character that has absolutely no counterpart in the real world, and to add to the difficulty, isn't one that looks inherently cuddly.

Just as director Rob Letterman almost cut the Mr. Mime interrogation scene out of the movie, designing Mr. Mime was one of the hardest parts of the project for Nordby and his team. "We asked The Pokémon Company, 'What is this thing?' and they said they didn't know, and even tried to talk us into cutting him, because they didn't think it could work onscreen," Nordby said. Unlike Pikachu or Jigglypuff, Mr. Mime looks more like a pretty disturbing humanoid creature dressed as a mime--only it isn't.

"They told us again that Pokémon don't wear clothes. Everything about Mr. Mime is its skin, so the horns is just its hair that bends that way," Nordby told us. "We got a real mime named Trygve [Wakenshaw], who was consulted for the movements. For the design we ended up having to look not at animals, but at toys. Rubber balls, inflatable fair gloves, just every kind of common kids toys we used for the textures--every surface feels like a toy, so it counteracts some of the creepiness."

Whether they succeeded in making Mr. Mime not creepy is a question for another time, but it is fair to say they actually managed to make the world of Pokémon feel real, which is an undeniable achievement.

Free Anime: Tokyo Ghoul, Black Clover First Seasons Available To Own On PSN (US)

By Jenae Sitzes on May 15, 2019 02:05 am

Every once in a while, a good anime series will pop up as a free download on PSN, and the latest anime freebies available for PS4 owners are worth grabbing now. The first seasons of Tokyo Ghoul and Black Clover are each available for free to download and keep on US PSN. And while each show is technically available to stream through services like Hulu, Crunchyroll, and Funimation, it's nice to actually own a piece of media that may eventually get pulled from said streaming platforms.

To claim each series, you have to search the title on your PS4 console or in the PlayStation Video app on Android. The shows won't appear if you try just searching in PlayStation Store online. Twitter user Wario64, who first spotted the deal, shared screenshots of the anime series marked as free when you search on PS4:

Tokyo Ghoul is a must-watch anime that follows Ken Kanedgy, a college student who gets attacked by a flesh-eating creature known as a ghoul and subsequently becomes a half-ghoul who must learn to live in the worlds of both humans and ghouls. Then there's Black Clover, which tells the story of Asta, a young orphan boy born without powers in a world where everyone is born with a magical ability. Together with his friend Yuno, Asta becomes determined to grow stronger (despite his lack of magical prowess) and become the next Wizard King, the most powerful wizard around.

There's no knowing how long these anime series will be free, so act fast and claim them now if you're interested in owning them.
