Listen to PaRappa Creator's Songs Featured in Harmonix's New Game

By Anonymous on Oct 01, 2015 11:59 pm

Following the recent reveal of Rock Band creator Harmonix's new Wii Sports-like game, Beat Sports, the developer today announced it'll feature music from the creator of PaRappa the Rapper, Masaya Matsuura. You can listen to his songs below.

Beat Sports is a new collection of rhythm-based sports mini-games for Apple TV; it includes versions of tennis, volleyball, golf, and other sports. It was one of the featured games during Apple's announcement of the device's latest iteration last month, and will be available alongside its launch later this month.

Matsuura is something of a legend in the rhythm game space, being the creator (and composer) of PaRappa. He also worked on other early, influential rhythm games like UmJammer Lammy and Vib-Ribbon--the latter of which made its much-heralded debut in North America last year, 15 years after its original release.

Beat Sports marks the first time Matsuura has worked with Harmonix, which has long been synonymous with rhythm games. In a statement shared with GameSpot, the studio's co-founder, Alex Rigopulos, said, "Matsuura-san is one of the true pioneers of the music game genre, and his work has been hugely inspirational to me and others at Harmonix from our early days. We've wanted to work with him for a very long time so we're thrilled to be able to include some of his wonderful music in Beat Sports."

You can listen to both of the Matsuura-composed songs appearing in Beat Sports below.

PS4/PC Horror Game SOMA Sells 92k Copies, Enough to Pay Bills for Two Years

By Anonymous on Oct 01, 2015 11:39 pm

It is rare for developers to reveal hard sales numbers for their games, but that is exactly what Frictional Games has done for its latest release, the PlayStation 4 and PC horror game, SOMA. After 10 days, the title has sold around 92,000 copies, which is good enough to "pretty much" pay the company's bills for about two years, the studio announced on its website today.

Due to "legal reasons," Frictional cannot share sales number by platform.

Overall, Frictional said 92,000 copies sold, which counts preorders, is "quite good." By comparison, the studio's last game, Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010), sold 20,000 copies in its first week and 30,000 in its debut month. SOMA did not outsell 2013's Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs (developed by The Chinese Room), however, as that game sold about 120,000 copies in its first week.

Whatever the case, SOMA continues to sell well, moving around 2,000 copies every day, Frictional added. However, the game needs to sell around 276,000 units for the studio to be able to recoup its development costs for the project. But Frictional isn't exactly sweating this.

"Given that it took us five years to make the project, there's no immediate stress to do so," it said about recouping development costs. "One of the great things about funding SOMA 100 percent ourselves is that all money earned goes into our own pockets and is directly used to fund our upcoming projects. So we are under no pressure to recoup immediately so long as we get enough to keep going--which we certainly have now."

Overall, Frictional is hoping to sell around 100,000 copies of SOMA in its first month--given its current sales pace, achieving that milestone seems likely.

SOMA's release has also negatively impacted the sales of Frictional's past games. When preorders for SOMA began, sales of Amnesia games fell by about 30 percent, a rate that continues now. Frictional saw the same kind of dropoff when A Machine for Pigs was released; its release cut The Dark Descent sales in half. But that was expected, given the games were in the same franchise. Frictional doesn't have a clear explanation for why this is happening again with SOMA, however.

"This feels strange as the two games are not connected apart from being made by the same company, so we wonder what mechanism it is that causes this," it said. "It might be that Amnesia's sales will rise again a bit later on though, so it's too soon to tell yet just what the effects are."

The full Frictional blog post contains many more details about SOMA, including how the game was marketed, its reception, the company's (lack of) piracy concerns, and what's next for Frictional. In the immediate future, now that the studio has fixed some bugs, the team is taking some time off to rest and relax.

"We'll then focus a bit on documenting how the game and engine works, in the hopes that modding will reach the glorious heights it did for Amnesia," Frictional said. "After that we are on to new secret projects. But those secret projects are really secret, so we can't say a word."

Game of Thrones Movie Not Happening, Author George RR Martin Confirms

By Anonymous on Oct 01, 2015 11:25 pm

Despite reports to the contrary, there is no Game of Thrones movie in works, the creator of the hugely popular fantasy saga has confirmed.

2945659-kit-harington-and-kristofer-hivj

Yesterday, reports surfaced that quoted author George RR Martin as saying that "there will be a movie." Martin supposedly made these comments while at a party following the show's massive Emmy win last week. He added that, although he would not have time to be involved, it was "something that HBO and DB [Weiss] and David [Benioff] are dealing with," referring the programme's showrunners.

Now Martin has clarified this issue on his Livejournal blog, stating that this was simply not the case. His entry reads:

Don't believe everything you read, boys and girls. Especially not online.

I don't know where this latest round of "there's going to be a GAME OF THRONES movie" nonsense is coming from, but suddenly it is everywhere, and all of us connected with the show and HBO are being bombarded. But nothing has changed.

The idea is still powerfully attractive. Not just to me, but to many people connected with the show. Actors, directors, producers, writers. How not? It would be a great way to end.

Which doesn't mean it is going to happen. There is great enthusiasm for the notion, sure, but not necessarily from HBO. They are in the TV business, not the feature film business."

Previously, Weiss and Benioff had stated that they planned to finish the show after seven seasons. Last year, Entertainment Weekly quoted Benioff as saying: "I would say it's the goal we've had from the beginning. Once we got to the point where we felt like we're going to be able to tell this tale to its conclusion, that became [an even clearer] goal. Seven gods, seven kingdoms, seven seasons. It feels right to us."

However, with ratings high and a record-breaking Emmy haul, it remains likely that HBO would look to extend the show beyond two more seasons--but whether this would be another season, a movie, or even a spinoff show remains unknown.

Game of Thrones season six is currently in production, and will premiere in 2016.

Xbox One/PS4/PC's TrackMania Turbo Release Delayed Until 2016

By Anonymous on Oct 01, 2015 11:15 pm

Racing game TrackMania Turbo is no longer slated for release this year, with publisher Ubisoft today announcing it's been delayed until "early 2016."

A post on Ubisoft's blog explains that it's "received valuable feedback" from fans, which it takes "very seriously." The extra development time will be used to "enhance the campaign and the game's interface." The UI has notoriously been convoluted in past TrackMania games and appeared rough in the looks we'd gotten at Turbo. You can see some of it in the video below that was released in July.

2945662-1.jpg2945663-2.jpg2945664-3.jpg2945665-4.jpg2945666-5.jpg2945667-6.jpg2945668-7.jpg2945669-8.jpg2945670-9.jpg2945671-10.jpg

Nadeo will also look to improve other areas of the game, including multiplayer and online stability. There will be new features, too, including a mode that lets you play against friends on "your favorite user-made tracks." And the Trackbuilder mode will be made "even more accessible and complete," while the random generator will be "fine-tune[d]."

A specific release date for Turbo was not shared. We do know that, despite traditionally being a PC-only series, the game is headed to PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Activision Responds to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 Issues

By Anonymous on Oct 01, 2015 10:48 pm

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 was released this week on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but the response to the latest entry in the iconic skateboarding series was probably not what Activision would have wanted. Players quickly discovered a number of bugs and other issues, and now Activision has responded.

In a one-sentence statement, Activision acknowledged the problems and said it hopes to fix them. However, the publisher did not share a changelog or provide a timetable for the patch.

"We are aware of the issues that players have experienced following the launch of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 and are working with the developer to address these so that we can continue to improve the gameplay experience for all of the Tony Hawk fans who have known and loved this franchise for more than 16 years," Activision said.

This statement follows comments from Robomodo earlier this week on Twitter. The studio said it, along with co-developer Disruptive Games, were "reading all feedback."

As developer Dan Teasdale points out, in 2002, Activision and Tony Hawk signed a publishing deal that expires in 2015. Some have questioned Activision's committment to the franchise in the wake of this soon-to-expire deal, though it's unclear if this contract has been extended or updated in any way since 2002. The contract, if it still holds, would also seem to suggest that Activision needed to release Pro Skater 5 this year.

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Pro Skater 5, which lack the "seamless" online multiplayer featured included in the new-generation versions, are scheduled to launch in November for $40.

Star Fox Zero Delayed to Nail "Platinum Feel," Dev Discusses 60 FPS on Both Screens

By Anonymous on Oct 01, 2015 10:30 pm

Star Fox Zero may be delayed for additional polish, but according to Platinum Games' Yusuke Hashimoto--who is co-directing the game alongside Shigeru Miyamoto's team at Nintendo--the game is already running at 60 frames per second on both the television screen and the Wii U GamePad.

"Those two screens, you can't find that anywhere else," Hashimoto told GameSpot during a recent interview. "When we were doing Bayonetta 2, we just used that screen as a touch pad. With Star Fox, Miyamoto originally had the idea that he wanted to create a shooting game that used both of these screens, and then we said, okay, how can we combine this with Star Fox? Just having to use those two screens makes things interesting.

"We've got them both moving at 60 fps, which is big for a lot of people, I think," he continued. "But I think that it's kind of a milestone in gaming, in a way. It's not something that we have done ourselves before at Platinum, and it's just not even something that has been done in gaming before. So it's a lot of new challenges."

Hashimoto added that the biggest challenge with Star Fox Zero has been making sure using both screens feels natural and interesting--and more importantly, fun. For Miyamoto's team as well as Hashimoto and his collaborators, creating a shooter using the GamePad controls is a new experience.

"We've been working with action games long enough," Hashimoto said. "We understand how the players play an action game, how they respond to an action game, how they'll move, what they'll do in the situational stuff. What we're making here now, it's totally a new learning experience for us, which is kind of fun to find out."

In mid-September, Miyamoto posted a heartfelt note to Facebook stating that Star Fox Zero had been delayed into 2016. GameSpot's own hands-on preview from E3 earlier this year describe controls and concepts that were a struggle to grow comfortable with. In his note, Miyamoto cited further polish to level design and cutscenes as well as to how players would utilize both the TV and GamePad screens. Hashimoto reiterated that quality is the reason for the delay, and added that his studio's task in the matter is to give the game more of that "Platinum feel."

"We want to make it feel as great as possible," Hashimoto said. "It's easy to say [it was delayed] to increase its quality, or whatever, but that entails a lot, whether it be visuals, or controls."

Star Fox Zero is currently slated to launch in 2016. Platinum Games' involvement with the title was announced at E3 earlier this year.

The Beginner's Guide Review

By Anonymous on Oct 01, 2015 10:30 pm

What is a game? Why do games exist? How should you approach them? How should you perceive and engage with the games you play?

These are some of the questions posed to you in The Beginner's Guide, a narrative-focused game by Davey Wreden, known for creating The Stanley Parable. Wreden himself is a key part of The Beginner's Guide. He's the narrator, directly addressing and guiding you through a curated collection of unreleased games, developed by an individual known as Coda. While doing so, he shares personal anecdotes regarding his relationship to the games and their creator.

Seeing themes get workshopped over multiple games is fascinating

On a basic level, The Beginner's Guide is an interesting insight into the process of video game development. Wreden obviously admires Coda's work, and is excited to show off the various games and game prototypes, exhibiting how Coda's skills as a game maker have evolved over time. Beginning with a small desert-themed Counter-Strike map and continuing through to large oppressive labyrinths, you see the results of Coda learning how to build new environments, develop new mechanics, and create new art. At times, Wreden rapidly teleports you through multiple prototypes to show Coda's numerous attempts to interpret a specific theme in video game form, as if quickly switching television channels. Watching Coda's skills and ideas improve and become increasingly more confident over a period of time is, in itself, fascinating.

The story moves at a brisk, but thoughtful pace. Wreden's voice-over is sincere throughout, and it creates a personality you can genuinely connect to. Even though Wreden is constantly keen to point out significant details and recurring motifs, he sometimes pauses, waiting for you to discover unique elements of Coda's games for yourself, before verbally chiming in with excitement. Wreden is that friend watching you play a game he loves over your shoulder, waiting for your reactions, sharing your enjoyment. He's the kind of friend who can't wait to see you at work the next day, so you can obsess over theories about the meaning of something you both saw.

There's more to it, though. Wreden uses The Beginner's Guide to present questions concerning universal game theory and design. When you play a game, should you consider the creator's intentions in regards to particular design choices? Or should a game speak for itself, leaving you to form your own interpretation?

Maybe it does, and maybe it doesn't.

Wreden seems to believe that games can be a window into the mind of their creator and that by exploring their work, you can find meaning, develop insight into their personality, and form a connection with them. Wreden wants to share Coda's games with you, but also share his thoughts about what their design says about Coda as a person. The questions Wreden raises, the way he unravels his own thoughts on the matter, and his attempt to understand and connect with Coda through these games is the focal point of the game's intriguing, overarching narrative.

He has a few neat tricks, too. Wreden is the omnipresent game developer, and uses his own programming abilities to alter Coda's games to assist in the inquisitive adventure. Impossible puzzles and impassable terrain are negated, allowing you to move through spaces not intended for exploration, and find things that exist there. But the result of these discoveries raise more questions about Coda as both a human being and creator, as well as game development in general. Why would a developer place significant content in a place which can't be reached during normal play, and isn't meant to be seen? Does it matter whether a player can complete a game? Does the matter if a player understands it? Does a game even have to be "playable"?

The Beginner's Guide puts these questions to the test; it asks you to do nothing more than "play" through each of Coda's games and listen to what Wreden has to say. At most, you move through a space, engage with dialogue trees, and perform very light puzzle solving. There are no win conditions and no lose conditions, but your participation is a vital part of engaging with Wreden and experiencing Coda's evolution. The Beginner's Guide may not test your reflexes or strategic abilities, but it challenges you to reconsider games, creators, and your perspective as the player.

After humble beginnings, Coda eventually learns how to create huge, oppressive labyrinths.

The conclusion to the narrative involving Wreden and Coda is both moving and thought provoking. Wreden's narration eventually gets more sparse, allowing you, now hopefully in a perceptive frame of mind, to consider Coda's more fully realized projects on their own. With Wreden's guidance and stimulating propositions, he makes you feel as if your connection to Coda's work and Coda as an individual are as strong as his own, and the creation of that empathy is an achievement. Whether the story of Coda is fictional or not, is irrelevant.

The Beginner's Guide is an absorbing journey into the thoughts and processes involved during the creation of a video game. It succeeds in helping you understand and sympathize with game developers as artists and people. It equips you with important tools to perceive and think about both video games and other mediums in intelligent ways. It's a game that lives up to its namesake--it's the beginner's guide to the meaning of video games.

Watch Man Propose During Destiny Livestream

By Anonymous on Oct 01, 2015 09:14 pm

Here's something you don't see every day. A man has proposed to his girlfriend as she was playing Destiny. She was broadcasting on Twitch, so the touching moment was captured and broadcast live.

At about 36 minutes into this video, Twitch streamer nescaughtfire33's dog strolls into the room with a special surprise around its neck. She quickly realizes it's a marriage proposal, at which time her boyfriend gets down on one knee and asks the question. Spoiler alert...she said yes.

"I love you more than anything, would you do the honor of spending the rest of your life with me?" he asks.

"Oh my god, yes!" she replies (with some colorful language thrown in).

This isn't the first time a marriage proposal was broadcast live during a game stream, as a speedrunner did the same thing earlier this summer.

Looking for more stories of gamer love? Last year, BioWare shared the tale of how it helped a couple get engaged. And in February 2013, BioWare told us all about how a couple's chance meeting in Mass Effect 3 led to courtship and then marriage.

Destiny's latest expansion, The Taken King, launched in September. For more, check out GameSpot's review. Looking ahead, Bungie has teased it has a lot more in store for players.

Anaheim Ducks Beat Canadiens to Win 2016 Stanley Cup, According to NHL 16

By Anonymous on Oct 01, 2015 08:45 pm

The Anaheim Ducks will beat the Montreal Canadiens to win the 2016 Stanley Cup. That's according to an EA Sports simulation of the upcoming season performed using NHL 16. It will be a thrilling finale to the season, as the Ducks will claim victory in Game 7 of the the Stanley Cup Finals, according to the sim.

Ducks winger Corey Perry is the hero for Anaheim during the postseason, leading the pack with 23 points and taking home the Conn Smythe Trophy for being the overall playoff MVP.

Not only will the Ducks claim victory in the championship (their second in nine years), but they will also become the ninth team in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup and Presidents' Trophy in the same season. The Presidents' Trophy is awarded to the team with the best record during the regular season.

Watch the video above to see some highlights from the NHL 16 simulation, while some other stats are available in the bullet point list below, written by EA Sports. An even more in-depth breakdown of this year's simulation is available on the EA Sports blog.

This isn't a guarantee that the Ducks will win. Last year, EA's NHL 15 simulation prediction said the Ducks would win the Cup, but that did not happen. The yearly simulations are conducted using computer-controlled teams and the latest player data, including individual player ratings and line combinations, as well as things like hot streaks and injuries.

NHL 16 was released on September 15 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. A "Legacy Edition" of the game was released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, featuring updated rosters and schedules.

GameSpot's NHL 16 review scored the pro hockey game an 8/10.

NHL 16 Simulation Highlights:

  • The Anaheim Ducks will defeat the Minnesota Wild in the Western Conference Final. The Montreal Canadiens will defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference Final.
  • After missing the Playoffs last season, the Los Angeles Kings will return to the postseason in a bid to win their third Stanley Cup Championship in five years. The Kings' Playoff run will end in the first round, losing in seven games to the Calgary Flames.
  • After finishing last in the NHL standings in 2015, the Buffalo Sabres put together a solid season and just miss out on the Eastern Conference Playoffs by a mere two points.
  • With 55 goals under his belt, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will take home the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy.
  • In addition to closing the season in the Top 15 in scoring, Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid will establish himself as the league's top rookie by taking home the Calder Memorial Trophy.
  • Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby will pile up the awards, including the Hart Memorial Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, and the Ted Lindsay Award.
  • Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price continues his dominance in the crease and will take home his second consecutive Vezina Trophy honor. Price joins legends like Martin Brodeur, Dominik Hasek and Patrick Roy as goalies who have won the Vezina in consecutive years.

Street Fighter 5 Adds Zangief to Character Roster, Gameplay Trailer Released

By Anonymous on Oct 01, 2015 08:30 pm

Capcom has announced Zangief as the latest character to join the Street Fighter V roster.

Based on the gameplay trailer for the character, crushing normals and counter-hits will be a core part of the Russian Red Cyclone's arsenal. His standing heavy kick seems to launch characters and can be followed up with a lariat for extra damage.

Zangief also looks like his offense will involve taking a hit to deal a much more punishing one back. He's also picked up Alex's shoulder check from Street Fighter 3--except with more elbow, which will be handy for anti-airs.

To deal with fireball characters, Zangief can headbutt single-hit projectiles, but not multi-hit. During his V-Reversal he thrusts he chest out to nullify attacks.

When V-Trigger is activated, Zangief also has a lariat vortex which drags his opponent in. Naturally, his Critical Art is a devastating backbreaker.

"When it comes to raw strength, not many of the World Warriors can compete with Zangief. Training day and night, he believes that the only way to victory is to have a body complete with perfect muscles," Capcom says in its description of the character.

"Due to his intense training, which includes wrestling bears, Zangief is able to lift even the heaviest opponents with ease! In Street Fighter V, Zangief shows off the results of his training through his newfound V-Skill (Iron Muscle) and V-Trigger (Cyclone Lariat)."

It continues: "These are just the tip of the iceberg, as Zangief has many more new tactics in store for any opponent that challenges him and his raw power."

Here's Capcom's official descriptions of Zangief's unique abilities:

  • V-Skill: Iron Muscle -Zangief shows the true power of his body when he activates Iron Muscle. During Iron Muscle, Zangief can absorb one attack, which leaves him with recoverable health. If players hold down medium punch and medium kick and then press a direction on the joystick, Zangief will begin to slowly close in on the opponent. Upon release from the walk, Zangief flexes his muscles and hits the opponent if close enough.
  • V-Trigger: Cyclone Lariat - Zangief lives up to his name "the red cyclone" as he spins with high speed and velocity, pulling the opponent in close. If the player taps the V-Trigger activation buttons, Zangief will quickly spin and pull in the opponent. If the player holds the V-Trigger activation buttons, Zangief will continue to spin and hit the opponent multiple times.

A release date for the game has not yet been officially confirmed but an early 2016 window has been suggested. In an earnings report issued in May, Capcom said the title would be available its current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2016.

This date matches up with the game's previously rumored spring 2016 release window. Street Fighter V is in development for PlayStation 4 and PC, and will feature cross-platform play between both systems.

Capcom has said post-launch content for Street Fighter 5 will be earnable by playing the game. It intends to only ever offer a single disc for the game.

Take a look at some screenshots for Zangief in the gallery below.
