New Horizon Zero Dawn Trailers Show Off Its Open World, Crafting, And More

By Anonymous on Feb 27, 2017 12:20 am

With the launch of Sony's Horizon Zero Dawn coming up very soon, the publisher has now posted three new trailers for it. Two of the new videos show off the action-RPG's open world and crafting system, while a third showcases 4K gameplay on a PlayStation 4 Pro.

You can see all the new Horizon Zero Dawn videos below (via DualShockers).

Horizon Zero Dawn's launch trailer was released last week--watch it here.

Reviews for Horizon Zero Dawn started to show up last week. The game is receiving a lot of praise, including a 9/10 score from GameSpot.

Earlier this month, Sony talked about how Horizon Zero Dawn has the potential to become a new franchise for the company. A report from SuperData this week said the game could sell as many as 6 million copies by the end of 2017 and up to 8 million for its lifetime, bringing it close to Uncharted 4. This would be a particularly notable achievement, as Horizon Zero Dawn is a brand-new franchise.

In other news, developer Guerrilla Games has announced everything that's in Horizon Zero Dawn's day one update. For more on the game, read all of GameSpot's previous stories and watch every video here.

Star Citizen Adds New Ship, As Funding Passes $144 Million

By Anonymous on Feb 27, 2017 12:11 am

Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games has announced the newest ship, the A4A Hurricane, which is described as a "fighting spacecraft that packs a deadly punch into a slight fuselage."

No Caption Provided

It boasts a "powerful armament," the studio said in a blog post (via DualShockers). The ship features six guns that are apparently "capable of blasting their way through nearly anything."

The ship is not for beginners, however.

"Mastering her unique ratio of heavy weapons with little armor requires a particular mix of marksman and dogfighter," Cloud Imperium said. "Naval pilots serving with Hurricane squadrons have fallen in love with the exclusively offensive design; their peers' constant refrain of, 'Are you having a little ship with your guns?' has served only to further distinguish the flights of 'Six Shooters.'"

You can read more about the Hurricane here.

You can buy the Hurricane right now for $160 and up as part of a "limited concept sale." What this means is that "the ship design meets our specifications, but it is not yet ready to display in your Hangar, fight in Arena Commander, or fly in the Alpha."

So basically you can't use it yet.

"The sale includes Lifetime Insurance on the ship hull and a pair of decorative items for your Hangar," the developer added. "A future patch will add a Hurricane poster and then, once the in-game model is finished, you will also be given an in-game Hurricane mini ship model."

In other Star Citizen news, the crowdfunded game has now passed a whopping $144 million.

PlayStation VR Passes 915,000 Units Sold

By Anonymous on Feb 26, 2017 11:38 pm

Sony has sold around 915,000 PlayStation VR headsets as of February 19, according to Sony executive Andrew House. He shared the figure in an interview with the New York Times published today.

No Caption Provided

According to the report, Sony is internally projecting 1 million sales in its first six month, meaning by around mid-April (PS VR went on sale on October 13, 2016). Given the sales already, it seems that milestone will surely be reached ahead of schedule.

"You literally have people lining up outside stores when they know stock is being replenished," House said about the situation in Japan.

PlayStation 4 is priced at $400-$500 and requires a PlayStation 4. Sony has sold around 53 million PlayStation 4 consoles, as of the start of January. If PlayStation VR is bought by users in the high single-digit percentage of all PS4 owners, House said he would be "very happy."

Mr. House said he would be "very happy" if the product ends up being purchased by a high single-digit percentage of all PlayStation 4 owners. For newer generations of headsets to reach a bigger audience, they will have to be lighter, cheaper and unencumbered by cables, analysts believe.

The Uncharted Movie Has An R-Rated Script, Naughty Dog Says It Knows "Nothing" About It

By Anonymous on Feb 26, 2017 11:29 pm

[UPDATE] Uncharted writer Neil Druckmann said on Twitter that no one at Naughty Dog has read Joe Carnahan's script.

And in response to more recent comments from Carnahan in a Collider interview, Druckmann said he wishes Carnahan would "stop implying that he has our support."

Here's what Carnahan told Collider:

"The script went in, the script got huge, it got a big round of applause at Sony, they were very, very happy with it. So I don't know, we'll see what the casting comes out [as]. Shawn Levy was brilliant; we worked together for a couple months on it… There was a lot of pressure because I've got friends over there at Sony, Jonathan Kadin, obviously Tom Rothman and I go way back, Doug Belgrad--these are like my guys. So I felt an additional weight of like, 'I gotta deliver them something they'll make.' It's got four of the most insane--I've never written crazier sh** in terms of an action sequence than what's in that movie… I'm very happy with the script, and listen it was important that I got Amy Hennig's approval, her and Nolan North, and what I've heard is the Naughty Dog guys are really happy with it. But who knows? That could be like Donald Trump hearing something; that may not be true at all."

The original story is below.

Uncharted movie writer Joe Carnahan has shared some new details on his script. Speaking to ComingSoon, Carnahan said he tried to match what the games offer in terms of dialogue. This includes swearing and adult themes; he expects a movie based on his script to receive an R rating.

"When I wrote Uncharted, I didn't spare the rod," he explained (via Collider). "I wrote it the way the video game is. They swear in the game, they're kinda foul-mouthed, and I kept all that stuff intact, and I definitely didn't write it as a PG-13 movie. I wrote it the way that movie should be written."

No Caption Provided

R-rated movies traditionally make less money than those with lower ratings, which may explain why some studios are reportedly hesitant to give the green light to films with the Restricted rating. Director Gore Verbinski has said he could not raise enough money for an R-rated version of BioShock, with the studio more intent on making it PG-13, a compromise he would not accept. More recently, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn said he couldn't get an R-rated Hitman movie made.

Carnahan, who wrote 2010's The A-Team and the upcoming Bad Boys For Life, says it's not true that R-rated movies can't be big commercial successes, especially today, after Deadpool.

"I never understood the metric for, 'This will make X-amount more if it were PG-13,'" he said. "PG-13 in a lot of ways is a cop out, and I think it's been exposed as such."

Also in the interview, Carnahan talked about the comparisons that people make to Uncharted and Indiana Jones. They may share some qualities, but there is a reason why Carnahan believes his Uncharted script as an "anti-Indiana Jones" feel to it.

"Drake is not a guy who likes museums. He thinks they're all crooked. Curators are 'thieves;' the guys in the Louvre and The Met are thieves and despicable," Carnahan said. "He's a treasure hunter, not an archaeologist. He doesn't have Indiana Jones' idea of pure faith in archaeology. That's not the way he thinks."

"I think Amy Hennig did it when she wrote the game. She made Drake very much an anti-Indiana Jones, you know? Don't forget, for that first game after that pirate attack, Drake and Sully leave Elena behind; they dump her. Indiana Jones would never do something like that. That's a rogue act..."

Finally, Carnahan said his Uncharted movie script is not based on one of the Uncharted games, though of course he used them as a template. "There's no point in just transposing them to film," he said. "You've gotta come up with new sh*t, so that's what I did. It was a great challenge but it was a lot of fun."

The Uncharted series is known for its big action sequences, and you can expect these to be in the Uncharted movie. "I probably wrote four of the biggest, f***in' craziest action sequences I think I've ever written in that movie," he said.

You can read the full interview here at ComingSoon.

Before Carnahan came onboard, Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty) was among those to have written a draft of the Uncharted movie script. Superbad writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were reportedly courted to write a script years ago. There is no guarantee that Carnahan's script will be the one that gets made into a movie.

The movie was first announced way back in 2009, only for it to repeatedly fall apart. Actors mentioned as possibilities for leading roles included Mark Wahlberg, Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, Amy Adams, and Scarlett Johansson. Chris Pratt is among those to pass on the role of Nathan Drake. We're still waiting for official casting announcements.

Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Night at the Museum) is directing the Uncharted movie, which will reportedly start filming this year.

Shadow Of Mordor Sequel Leaked, Revealed As Shadow Of War

By Anonymous on Feb 26, 2017 10:48 pm

We've known for some time that a sequel to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor was likely in the works, and today new details regarding the follow-up were leaked.

Revealed in a listing on Target's international website (as discovered by NeoGAF member DeathByBacklog), the new game is called Middle-earth: Shadow of War. The page features box art for it and a brief description.

No Caption Provided

"Go behind enemy lines to forge your army, conquer Fortresses, and dominate Mordor from within," it reads. "Experience how the award-winning Nemesis System creates unique personal stories with every enemy and follower, and confront the full power of the Dark Lord Sauron and his Ringwraiths in this epic new story of Middle-earth."

PS4 and Xbox One versions are both listed. The original Shadow of Mordor was also available on PC, though the absence of a PC version on Target's website doesn't preclude it from also being in development.

A release date is stated as August 22. That might prove to be true, but early release dates on retailers' websites don't always pan out.

In addition to the standard version of the game, a Gold Edition will also apparently be available. Here's what that includes, based on the description:

  • Slaughter Tribe Nemesis Expansion
  • Outlaw Tribe Nemesis Expansion
  • The Blade of Galadriel Story Expansion
  • The Desolation of Mordor Story Expansion
  • Gold War Chest
  • Over $125 in total value

The two Nemesis expansions feature "a new Orc Tribe featuring new enemies, followers, missions, abilities, weapons, Fortress, and wilderness updates, and a Mythic Gear Set." The story expansions, meanwhile, have "a new campaign, playable character, and abilities, side missions, enemies, allies, and more."

The Gold Edition page also reveals slightly more about the game itself, teasing the ability to "[f]orge a new Ring of Power, conquer Fortresses in massive battles, and dominate Mordor with your personal Orc army."

We'll have more on Shadow of War as it's announced.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Opens Bigger In China Than Newest Star Wars

By Anonymous on Feb 26, 2017 05:30 pm

After premiering in the US and Europe in January, the newest Resident Evil movie, The Final Chapter, opened in the massive Chinese market this weekend--and it did very well.

It made $33 million on its first day and $70 million after just two days ,according to Deadline. By comparison, Star Wars: Rogue One made $31 million for its opening weekend in China (a three-day tally).

Another comparison to make is to the Michael Fassbender-starring Assassin's Creed, which made no more than $7 million for its opening in China, according to Deadline.

The Final Chapter has now made around $175 million worldwide.

Like Warcraft, The Final Chapter is faring much better internationally than domestically. The movie made only $26.5 million in the US for its lifetime, a figure that the movie surpassed in China on its first day.

The Final Chapter, the sixth movie in the series, is apparently the last one from director Paul W.S. Anderson and franchise star Milla Jovovich. Across six movies, the Resident Evil film series has passed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, making it far and away the most successful video game movie franchise ever.

As for the Resident Evil video game series, Resident Evil 7 has shipped 3 million copies. The game's newest DLC, Not A Hero, is coming out this Spring.

In other movie news, we'll report back with a box office report for the US later today. Additionally, we'll have a roundup of all the winners from the 89th Academy Awards tonight.

By Anonymous on Feb 26, 2017 06:48 am

With Mass Effect: Andromeda due to launch in just a few more weeks, developer BioWare has now confirmed more details about it. According to DualShockers, BioWare's Ian Frazier said on Twitter that a "good portion" of the development team is still at work on the day-one patch. The game went gold on Friday, meaning the studio has completed the initial development on the game.

This patch should be up and ready by the time Andromeda launches for EA Access and Origin Access, five days before the game comes out on March 21. Producer Michael Gamble cautioned that nothing is set in stone as of yet, so plans could change.

Andromeda launches on all platforms on March 21 for all platforms. You may not have to wait that long to play, however, as a multiplayer beta is expected to launch at some point before then.
