Metroidvania Guacamelee 2 Gets New Trailer And Release Date

By Anonymous on Jul 26, 2018 12:24 am

The long-awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed Metroidvania Guacamelee is coming this year. A new trailer for Guacamelee 2 revealed the action-platformer is launching for PS4 and PC on August 21.

Guacamelee 2 continues where the first game left off, with luchador Juan Aguacate retired from supernatural adventuring and brawling. That all changes when a new threat emerges, and Juan once again dons the luchador mask that gives him his vast array of powerful attacks and abilities.

Like its predecessor, Guacamelee 2 will feature four-player local co-op, and a vast array of colorful abilities that offer new strategies for movement and combat. The same style of electro-Mexican soundtrack is making its return too, as well as the vibrant color palette used for the graphics. The game promises the return of familiar faces from the original, both friendly and villainous.

However, there are a few changes this time around. Guacamelee 2 has twice as many different enemy types for Juan to smash, plus many more bosses. Juan will also unlock new abilities he can only use after he's transforms into a chicken, instead of only finding new skills for his human form. He'll learn these new chicken abilities from some sort of Chicken Illuminati.

Fans of the original Guacamelee were surprised to hear its sequel would not be making its way to the PlayStation Vita. Guacamelee released on the Vita, PS3, and PC in 2013, before getting ported to Xbox 360, PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One the following year. Guacamelee 2 might copy its predecessor and eventually make its way to other platforms--like the Xbox One, Vita, or Nintendo Switch--at a later date.

Fallout: Miami Would Be Pretty Cool, This Mod Shows

By Anonymous on Jul 26, 2018 12:19 am

The next massive total-conversion mod for Fallout 4 is taking players to Miami. A new trailer for Fallout: Miami reveals the Florida city remade in the war-torn, radiation-filled landscape of the Fallout universe. The primary modder behind Fallout: Miami is Milan "Mika999" Brajkovic, most well-known for being the creator behind the well-received Shard of Oblivion mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The new mod takes reimagined content from Fallout 4 and its Far Harbor and Nuka-World DLC expansions. Fallout: Miami's website claims the mod's map will be slightly larger than Far Harbor's, roughly covering South Pointe Pier to Fontainebleau Hotel. The mod doesn't have an official release date as of yet, and the creators behind it are seeking volunteers who are familiar with the Fallout Creation Kit to help finish the project. The trailer seems to promise a similar experience to Fallout: New Vegas.

Fallout 4 is available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. However, like most mods, Fallout: Miami is only scheduled for PC.

Another mod for PC, titled Fallout: New California is launching October 23. According to Polygon, New California is a mod of Fallout: New Vegas, and its story acts as an unofficial prequel to Bethesda's 2010 RPG.

Fallout 76, the next official release in the Fallout franchise, is heading to West Virginia. The game takes place in the earliest point on the Fallout timeline, approximately 60 years before the original 1997 game's story. Bethesda is taking a different approach with Fallout 76, opting for a massive-multiplayer online experience as opposed to a single-player RPG. Fallout 76 launches for Xbox One, PS4, and PC on November 14. A beta is scheduled for October.

No Man's Sky Next Update's Biggest Changes: Multiplayer, Freighters, Galactic Atlas, And More

By Anonymous on Jul 26, 2018 12:13 am

Hello Games has launched the new update for No Man's Sky, called Next. The free update makes massive overhauls to the game by adding multiplayer, character customization, command freighters, and visual upgrades. Next is the fourth major update to No Man's Sky, following Foundation, Pathfinder, and Atlas Rises. However, it is perhaps the most substantial of them all.

No Man's Sky originally launched on PS4 and PC in August 2016, and was harshly criticized for a perceived lack of content. Although multiple updates have since expanded the number of activities that players can do, Sony management admits the PR strategy "wasn't great" and No Man Sky designer Sean Murray acknowledged that he made "mistakes."

Despite the initial backlash at launch, No Man's Sky's updates have slowly earned the game a growing playerbase. "One day I hope to reach a point where I feel No Man's Sky is 'finished,' but luckily there's still so much more we want to do," Murray said.

The major changes in No Man's Sky Next are outlined below, but you can read the full patch notes and bug fixes on No Man's Sky's blog. Though it's not in the patch notes, Murray tweeted out that Next also allows players to command their in-game avatar to sit down--a feature that players have been asking for. Perhaps a few more playful secrets are hidden within the game's newest update. We do now that a new patch is already on the way to fix problems that have emerged, as are weekly updates to keep things fresh. We'll keep you updated as we learn about more.

Multiplayer And Character Customization

Multiplayer is the largest change to No Man's Sky. Though it was never confirmed whether multiplayer would be included prior to launch, many players wished to explore the galaxy with their friends however they wanted. Next adds a lot of the mechanics those players wanted, as well as a few more.

You can now join up with random strangers, or team up with a small contingent of friends to construct colonies of small shelters, race exocraft, or engage in space battles against other players. You'll be able to team up with friends right from the start, as the multiplayer extends to No Man's Sky's story and tutorial missions.

To help differentiate between avatars, Next adds character customization so that everyone can personalize their in-game appearance. You'll be able to switch up your race and change your outfits too. Depending on the species of your character, you'll even be able to change your hairstyle. Next allows players to be a Gek, Vy'keen, Korvax, Traveller, or Anomaly.

Not every player you meet is a friendly face, so when you run into another player in the midst of exploring the stars, it's best to be cautious. Although a stranger could be a harmless passerby or a future ally, Next allows players to prey on others to survive. A collection of ships approaching on the horizon might be a crew of players acting as space pirates who rely on the stolen loot of others.

Building And Crafting

You'll be able to invite your friends onto your very own command freighter to tackle challenging multiplayer missions. If you're still having trouble, you'll be able to build and upgrade a whole fleet of frigates, which you can then customize to specialize in combat, exploration, trade, industry, or support.

You can use what you've found to build bases, which can now be built anywhere on any planet. You'll even be able to build on top of mountains and beneath the sea. And if you don't like how the terrain is affecting the shape of your base, the improved terrain manipulator allows players to sculpt the planet's surface to their needs. The manipulator can be used to excavate ancient treasures too, which can be sold in the new Space Station Marketplace.

There are hundreds of new base parts that allow you to build bases that are larger and more complex so you can construct your perfect hideout. Next also lets players own multiple bases and place teleporters anywhere so travel goes much faster.

The resources used to customize your fleet and bases, as well as craft your gear and equipment, have all been reworked and rebalanced. Many of the resources you remember from the original No Man's Sky have received new names and been given completely different uses. Planetary resources have been expanded, and a planet's biome, weather, and classification have a much larger effect on what type of materials you'll find there.

To help you excavate the larger amounts of materials you'll discover, the deployable tech used in resource collection can now be easily picked up and carried in your inventory. The improved analysis visor makes it easier to locate terrain resources as well. You can also quickly find your bearings while exploring, thanks to visible latitude and longitude coordinates and the ability to tag points of interest with a marker.

Missions

The opening section of No Man's Sky has been updated with new story elements, as well as a tutorial that teaches you advanced gameplay features. Mission chains help get players started with exploring planets and starting bases.

Once past the tutorial, new types of missions are available to complete. Exploring is still at the core of No Man's Sky, but new photography, feeding, freighter attack and defense, archaeology, and hunting missions expand the amount of activities that players can do. Players won't be getting all of their objectives from the same NPC either, as a diverse assortment of random NPCs on different stations offer missions.

Patch Notes

Hello Games has released detailed patch notes for Next that outline everything that's changed, including the extreme minutia. Beyond all of the major features above you can see adjustments to controls (like the ability to manually holster the Multi-Tool), the overhaul to space station interiors, bug fixes, and much more.

Galactic Atlas

No Caption Provided

Just prior to the Next update going live, Hello Games launched a new website called the Galactic Atlas. This is essentially a guide to a specific area of the game--the Euclid Galaxy--that Hello seeded but will leave in the hands of players to explore and grow. From the site, you can track the progress of the galaxy, highlight points of interest, and join hubs or factions.

New Visuals

The visuals to No Man's Sky have also gotten an overhaul. Terrain generates faster and ground, water, and cloud textures have been upgraded. Ships, NPCs, and buildings have more detail too. No Man's Sky is also now fully playable in both first- and third-person, whether you're walking on the surface of a planet or soaring amongst the stars.

Draw distance has been improved so planets appear more dense and a new colour palette paints the forests, oceans, and plains of each world with added vibrancy. The hazardous storms that can spell the doom of smaller aircraft use new biome-specific particle effects to look more dangerous than ever before.

Fauna And Flora

The creatures you'll discover on your travels will now act more enthusiastically towards you if you feed them, letting you herd them together. The creatures' AI has also been revamped so they act more intelligently, responding to players they recognize as friendly and fleeing as a group from a perceived danger. Not all of the new animals and plantlife are friendly, however. Keep on the lookout for new hazardous species, as they will kill you if you're not careful.

Release Date/Time

No Man's Sky is available on PS4, PC, and Xbox One. Next is live on all platforms.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 Beta Will Be Open To Xfinity Customers

By Anonymous on Jul 25, 2018 11:47 pm

If you're an Xfinity internet customer who enjoys the occasional online deathmatch, we have some good news for you. Thanks to a special partnership between Activision and Xfinity, all Xfinity customers will be able to participate in the Private Multiplayer Beta for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. You can get your code starting July 27; just head to this page and sign in to your ISP account. The beta will take place August 3-6 for PS4 owners. Then, between August 10-13, another beta will go live for PS4, Xbox One, and PC owners.

Those without Xfinity internet can still participate in the beta, but they'll have to pre-order Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 to get access. This is the second year in a row Xfinity customers have gotten beta access for the series. Last year, they got to participate in the beta for Call of Duty: WWII.

The Black Ops 4 Private Multiplayer Beta will include six maps, two of which will be appearing for the first time in public. It will offer a number of play modes, including Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, and Search & Destroy. Also included will be a new mode called Control, an objective-based mode that has teams alternating between attacking and defending static objectives.

Participating in the beta gets you some free extras once the full game arrives. Everyone who plays the beta will get you a unique calling card as a bonus. If you reach max rank during the beta, you'll also get a Permanent Unlock Token, which can be used to acquire any piece of Create-a-Class content in the full game.

An additional beta is also planned for the battle royale-style Blackout mode, but it's not included in this promotion. All we know about it right now is that it will take place sometime in September. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will launch on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 12.

Switch Is Getting One Of 2016's Best Games Very Soon

By Anonymous on Jul 25, 2018 11:43 pm

Soon you can take Salt and Sanctuary with you wherever you go on Nintendo Switch. Ska Studios in partnership with porting house BlitWorks has announced that it's coming to Switch on August 2. The Souls-like will be available for $18 on the eShop. A separate retail version called Salt and Sanctuary: Drowned Tome Edition will follow this holiday season.

Salt and Sanctuary took the brutal-but-fair difficult boss battles of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls games and transferred it to a 2D plane, with side-scrolling action instead. GameSpot's review noted its tense combat, world-building, and rich mysteries, though some boss patterns were unpredictably frustrating.

"The two of us wanted to create a Soulslike game that we wanted to play, and finding that so many others who wanted it too warmed our dark little hearts," said co-creators Michelle and James Silva in the announcement. "Bringing Salt and Sanctuary to the Nintendo Switch means more people who like dismal, satisfying games can play our very dismal, satisfying game."

Dismal and satisfying is Ska's stock in trade, having developed a distinct style with games like The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, its sequel Vampire Smile, and Charlie Murder.

Game Of Thrones Prequel Pilot To Film In Early 2019

By Anonymous on Jul 25, 2018 11:28 pm

The end of Game of Thrones is inching closer and closer. With Season 8 set to debut in the first half of 2019, bringing the series to a close, many fans are waiting to see what becomes of the many proposed spin-offs that were in development. Thankfully, HBO programming president Casey Bloys shared some very interesting information at the TCA press tour.

While five pilot pitches were originally in contention, HBO recently ordered one to be filmed. It was initially reported that the pilot, written by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass), would begin production in October, but Bloys says that was never the case.

It's only now that the search for a director is beginning, along with a cast. The hope is to film the pilot in Ireland in early 2019. As previously reported, the potential prequel is set thousands of years before Game of Thrones and "chronicles the world's descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour."

Bloys was quick to note that this one pilot going into production doesn't mean the others have no chance of seeing the light of day. Instead, he would only say that the remaining four pitches are a "combination" of dead and still in the works. "The reason we did multiple scripts is out of five, we'd be lucky if we got one," he admitted.

Though Game of Thrones' final season will air in 2019, a release date for the potential follow-up has not been announced.

Game Of Thrones Season 8: HBO Narrows Down Its Premiere Date

By Anonymous on Jul 25, 2018 11:25 pm

Though it's been nearly a year since Game of Thrones Season 7 came to an end, fans are still hungry for any news about the George RR Martin series. Thankfully, HBO knows this and shared an exciting tidbit at the TCA press tour.

While a premiere date has yet to be announced for Season 8--the final batch of episodes for the show--HBO programming president Casey Bloys teased that the new installment will arrive in the first half of 2019. That could conceivably see Game of Thrones return to its previous release window of March or April, as opposed to Season 7's July 2017 premiere.

What Bloys wouldn't talk about, however, is what fans could expect from the six-episode season. When asked about the content, all he would share is that it's "pretty great." What else would you expect the president of programming to say about the network's biggest show, though?

Fans are aware of some things about the final season, though. For instance, it was previously revealed that the final six episodes could be feature-length by the time all is said and done. After the Season 7 finale clocked in at 82 minutes, HBO clearly has no issue letting Game of Thrones episodes run long. Given that star Kit Harington says the final season is "bigger than it's ever been," clearly the show is planning to go out with a band.

Additionally, it was announced that several fan-favorite directors, including "The Rains of Castamere" helmer David Nutter, would return for the final episodes. Showrunner David Benioff and DB Weiss will direct the series finale.

Rainbow Six Siege Update Out Now; Here Are The Patch Notes

By Anonymous on Jul 25, 2018 10:39 pm

A new update is live for Rainbow Six Siege primarily focusing on balancing changes and bug fixes. The update launched first on PC before also coming to Xbox One and PS4. Called Patch 2.2, the update makes several gameplay changes.

The first change affects how players deploy drones. Instead of immediately pulling into the drone camera's view upon deployment, players will have the choice between Standard and Advanced views. For Standard, the player's view changes to that of the drone upon deployment. For Advanced, the player's view remains with their Operator after throwing out a drone, and drone view will have to be manually switched to.

Players also can now choose their preference for how they rotate through their team's Observation Tools. For Defenders, there are groups of Observation Tools, divided between the main collection of cameras and the groups of specialized cameras assigned to specific Operators, like Valkyrie. Before, Defenders rotated through all the cameras as one large group. Players can still do that if they prefer, or change their settings so the switch between different Observation Tool groups is manual instead of automatic.

Ubisoft is also rolling out the first few Operator and item balancing changes outlined in the company's Designer's Notes. We've highlighted the major ones here, but the full list of changes and bug fixes can be found on Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Siege blog.

Balancing Changes

HBO's Deadwood Movie Is Actually Happening--It's About Time

By Anonymous on Jul 25, 2018 10:18 pm

It's been a very long time coming but Deadwood isn't quite so dead. After teasing a movie repeatedly since the series ended in 2006, HBO is officially moving forward with the project.

Speaking to reporters at the TCA press tour, HBO programming president Casey Bloys announced that a feature-length continuation of the series has been ordered. "I can finally confirm we are greenlit on the Deadwood movie," he teased. "We're looking at an October start date." While a release date has not been announced for the movie, Bloys teased a potential arrival in early 2019.

As for what's taken so long to make the project happen, given that it's been nearly 12 years since Deadwood ended, it was the schedule that made everything so difficult. "It has been a logistic nightmare getting all of the cast members schedules lined up," Bloys said. The original series starred Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, Kim Dickens, and Jim Beaver, among many others.

The announcement of a Deadwood movie actually happening is a longtime dream come true for many fans. When the series was canceled in 2006, creator David Milch and HBO had planned to make two movies for the network. However, in years since, nothing has come of it.

"We've been asked the Deadwood question for 11 consecutive years," HBO corporate communications chief Quentin Schaffer joked with the press. Now fans finally have the answer they've been waiting for.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Coming To VR, And You Could Already Own It

By Anonymous on Jul 25, 2018 10:18 pm

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice has already gotten a fair bit of attention as a sleeper hit from 2017, and soon players will be able to experience it in a whole new way. Developer Ninja Theory is releasing a VR Edition on Steam for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive on July 31. Best of all, if you already own the game on Steam, or if you purchase it anytime in the future, you'll get the VR edition for free.

The VR edition includes the full original game along with customizable comfort options and "additional experimental game modes," according to the announcement. In a development diary (below) the studio talks about how it addressed problems of camera movement and getting the frame rate properly smooth for VR.

Hellblade won the most awards of the 2017 BAFTA Games Awards with five in all. Those included Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, Best British Game, Game Beyond Entertainment, and Best Performer.

GameSpot's Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice review praised its satisfying combat and an inventive story that tackled the complex issue of mental illness. It also earned a spot on our Games of the Year 2017. The studio followed through on its themes itself, by donating to mental health charities.

Review: Teen Titans Go! To The Movies -- It's Deadpool For Kids

By Anonymous on Jul 25, 2018 10:17 pm

If you head to the theater and throw a rock, chances are you'll hit at least three superhero movies. The genre has taken over the box office in the last decade, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe leading the charge. With such a crowded movie landscape, it can be hard to cut through the noise. Luckily for Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, it has realized the easiest way to do so is with fart noises.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, the feature-length continuation of Cartoon Network's Teen Titans Go! series, has everything fans of the show will love. The team dances and sings, it's more about having fun than saving the world, and it's not afraid to delve into a long stretch of meta jokes.

The story is hilariously simple. Every superhero on the planet seems to have their own movies. That is, except, the Teen Titans. This crew that would rather eat sandwiches than conquer evil doesn't think they'll be considered real superheroes until their adventures are immortalized on the big screen. And how can you blame them? Even Aquaman is getting a movie.

No Caption Provided

As they quickly learn, though, thanks to Hollywood director Jade Wilson (Kristen Bell), the movie industry doesn't think the Titans are nearly important enough to get their own film. This is done through a series of in-movie trailers for everything from a standalone Alfred Pennyworth film to Batman's utility belt getting a movie, while the team gets nothing. That's when they realize the only way to become the stars they dream of being is to find a nemesis. In this case, that's Slade (Will Arnett).

For those who haven't solved that puzzle yet. Slade is Slade Wilson, otherwise known as Deathstroke. The movie never calls him that, though--they just repeatedly refer to him as Slade. While it could be due to Deathstroke being too extreme of a name for an animated kids film, the Titans repeatedly refer to him as Deadpool.

The running Deadpool joke is a smart one, given Teen Titans Go! To the Movies is essentially a Deadpool movie aimed at a much younger audience. The film is 90 minutes of nonstop poking fun at the superhero genre, including the MCU and X-Men universes. Nobody takes it on the chin as much as DC Comics, though. From posters for movies like Batman v Joker: Yawn of Justice to Green Lantern admitting that nobody likes to talk about the movie he made, no DC character is safe.

No Caption Provided

It's the sort of humor this extension of Teen Titans Go! uses to capture the attention of adult audiences who might not be as enraptured by a Beast Boy dance party as younger members of the crowd.

Another running joke in the film that might be lost on younger audiences is the fact that Nicolas Cage is the voice of Superman. As many know, Cage nearly played a live-action Superman on the big screen, thanks to Tim Burton's proposed Superman Lives film. While that project never ended up happening, Cage's performance as this world's Superman is perfect, as is Halsey's Wonder Woman. There's also a pretty incredible cameo that most fans won't see coming.

While, for the most part, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies is a fun, low-stakes adventure, it's not perfect. The jokes about farting and pooping can wear thin. There's an extended sequence where most of the team revels in the fact that they used a fake toilet on a movie set to take care of their business. While this might be the kind of humor that makes some of the younger audiences giddy, it felt out of place. The movie spends a lot of time masterfully joking about and mocking so many things. Spending its energy on such low-hanging fruit seems unnecessary.

No Caption Provided

Additionally, though it's only 92 minutes long, there was a point close to the end of the second act where the story started to drag. Thankfully, once the third act kicks in, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies thrusts into overdrive as the Titans and a massive robot Slade go to war.

In the end, though, this is the kind of superhero film adults and small children can go to and both find something they'll love. In a superhero movie landscape where the world is constantly being destroyed by massive CGI abominations, this is a refreshing change. Will Teen Titans Go! To the Movies save the DC Comics movie universe? Not in the least. However, like the recently released Ant-Man and the Wasp, it doesn't forget how funny and exciting these types of movies can be.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies is in theaters on July 27.

The Good:

  • A low-stakes adventure that's easy to get invested in
  • The meta humor
  • The voice cast
  • An amazing cameo

The Bad:

  • Poop jokes
  • It can feel a little long
  • No explanation as to why Slade isn't Deathstroke

Ghost Of Tsushima: What We Know (So Far)

By Anonymous on Jul 25, 2018 09:55 pm

Sony's reveal of Ghost of Tsushima was one of the highlights of Paris Games Week 2017, and what a surprise it was to find out that Infamous and Sly Cooper developer, Sucker Punch Games, is behind the project. The original trailer laid the foundation: a fictionalized take on an actual 13th century Mongol invasion, with a protagonist who transforms from samurai to ninja in order to protect the island his people call home. This year's E3 gave us a first look at live gameplay, and our first real taste of the beautifully realized environments that serve as the backdrop for what promises to be a brutal and unforgiving conflict.

We've pulled together everything we know about Ghost of Tsushima so far, including info on combat and details about the island and its inhabitants, and will continue to provide new updates as we learn more.

Characters, Story, and Setting

Ghost of Tsushima is set on the Japanese island of Tsushima, a location that in 1274 was invaded by Mongol raiders. Sucker Punch did extensive research on the actual island, including the study of the original beach where the Mongols first struck land. The team's vision is best summarized as an informed remix of the real island's geography, flora, and fauna. For Sucker Punch, it's all about glorifying the source material to set the stage for equally beautiful and tense moments in a war-torn idyllic countryside.

The lead character is Jin Sakai, and Jin will have to take what he's learned after years of training as a samurai and adjust his techniques in order to fend off forces that greatly outnumber the island's inhabitants, let alone the one-man army fighting to protect them. Sucker Punch's Chris Zimmerman described the tone of the game as brutal, but he also clarified that both sides of the conflict will reflect the humanity that so often gets lost in combat-driven games, with both Mongols and Japanese characters that will defy expectations--Masako, the character in the E3 trailer, being a prime example.

Combat

One of the primary conceits of Ghost of Tsushima is Jin's gradual adoption of ninja-like fighting and stealth techniques, of which we've only gotten a taste of so far. The majority of the available info on combat is focused on swordplay, either in one-on-one fights or with Jin facing off against small groups of enemies.

Despite the prevalence of realism, Ghost of Tsushima is not Bushido Blade, a fighting game where a single sword strike could spell death--just like real life. According to Zimmerman, this model simply isn't fun in the team's eyes. Still, we have seen moments in the available footage where Jin successfully takes off body parts and kills enemies with a flick of his wrist, and it appears this is more likely to happen while fending off common enemies, versus more important battles where opponents can absorb multiple slashes.

While Sucker Punch has hired weapons experts to help direct combat and attack animations, the studio is also going to play up traditional techniques by judiciously adding flair for effect. "There are things that Jin does when you're fighting that no samurai would ever do," said Zimmerman. "He does spin strikes, which are fun, they're very showy, they are completely… you would never do that [in real life]. You would never turn your back. There are things that he does even right now that we may continue to edit as we look for that balance. We'll see if we can find the best of both worlds, where it's as real as it can be while still being a video game."

Historical Accuracy

One of the most interesting discussions around the game coming out of E3 was about Sucker Punch's philosophy behind making a fun, fictional game based on dramatic real-life events. Once again, Zimmerman offered valuable insight. The team knows what historians have reported, but only so much of it will be honored--a decision made to cater to mainstream expectations of samurai, informed by movies and games alike.

According to Zimmerman: "we're going to deviate from historical truth, we just want to do it intentionally. A lot of the support we get from our friends from Sony in Japan, and our Japanese friends in Sony US, and all the cultural consultants we've assembled to help us do this stuff, is to make sure we don't deviate accidentally. There are things we are going to do that are different and we want to choose those wisely."

"If you have an idea about what samurai look like or how they act or how they think we're going to give that to you," he added. "Most people's idea is really based on an idea of samurai which is really more of a 16th-, 17th-, 18th-century idea of samurai; 13th century, historically, is pretty different. In terms of how they fought, what they wore, it doesn't match your expectations. So we're not sticking exactly to the historical truth of Kamakura-era samurai. It's gonna be a little different. The armor that you see him wear, it's not 13th century armor. It's more warring-states-period armor. Because, honestly, the 13th century armor is pretty jarring looking, it's not what you'd expect. It's really boxy. It doesn't look aspirational. And we wanna make sure that what we give you is your fantasy of what being a wandering samurai is."

Language Options

The E3 gameplay trailer had some of us concerned due to the use of English voice acting, which stood out given the game's historical basis and the stated import of cultural identity. Rest assured, there are language options available for players who prefer to hear Japanese and Mongolian voiceovers with English subtitles.

Difficulty

Speaking to Zimmerman, it sounds like Sucker Punch will create multiple difficulty settings in order to cater to a wide range of players. "There are difficulty levels and that's actually kind of more important for us than it is for a lot of games, because it's an open world game and lots of different people play those games for different reasons. There are people who are going to say it's beautiful and they just want to see what it's like, and yeah, their experience has to be different than somebody who looks at it like they've always wanted to play a really grounded katana fighting game, and the fantasy for them is about challenge, discipline, practice and precision--that's what they expect of samurai and that's what the game should demand from them as the player."

Release Date

Neither Sucker Punch nor Sony have committed to a release date for Ghost of Tsushima at this time.
