Marvel has announced that G. Willow Wilson, co-creator of Kamala Khan's Ms. Marvel, is moving on and passing off the series to a new writer. A new comic for the shapeshifting superhero, titled The Magnificent Ms. Marvel, will begin in 2019 and be written by Saladin Ahmed.
"In February, I will have written sixty issues of this book--five years of Kamala's story," Wilson told EW. "She is now something much bigger than the miniseries Sana and I planned years ago. She will, in all likelihood, outlive us all. I couldn't be happier about it--and by that same token, it means that my part in Kamala's adventures must eventually come to an end. Great superheroes stay fresh and relevant because they are the work of many storytellers, all of whom bring their unique perspectives and experiences to the character. Earlier this year, I began to have the persistent feeling that I was in danger of repeating myself every time I sat down to write a new script. It was a sign: time to start planning my exit."
Saladin Ahmed is no stranger to the comic book industry, being the author behind the popular run for Black Bolt--who, like Kamala, is an Inhuman--that started in 2017. "I was delighted when Saladin said yes to taking over writing duties on Ms. Marvel," Wilson said. "His plans for Kamala are incredibly exciting, and it's been a lot of fun getting an inside look at where the series is headed under his direction."
Kamala is the second person to hold the mantle of Ms. Marvel, taking inspiration for the name from her idol and the first Ms. Marvel, Carol Danvers. Carol's transformation into Captain Marvel left her previous title vacant, which the young Pakistani American was eager to fill after discovering she was an Inhuman with shapeshifting abilities. Much like Miles Morales, Kamala Khan has proven to be nearly as popular as the original hero she's reimagined, and since her creation she's gone on to briefly be a member of the Avengers, join the Champions, and found a new incarnation of the Secret Warriors. She was even a part of Marvel's Civil War II storyline.
Although Kamala has yet to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, her idol Carol Danvers is about to. Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, 2019--just ahead of Avengers: Endgame. Whether or not Carol's movie paves the way for a Kamala appearance remains to be seen, although the Agents of Shield TV series did introduce Inhumans into the MCU.
Niantic has announced a new holiday event for Pokemon Go. The festivities kick off next week and run into the new year, during which time players will be able to earn bonuses, hatch Eggs more easily, and even encounter more Pokemon originally from the Sinnoh region.
The third annual winter event begins on Tuesday, December 18, and once again, it brings back the festive hat-wearing Pikachu for a limited time. On top of that, Niantic says that more Ice-type and Gen 4 Pokemon will appear during the event; the promotional image the developer shared features Snover and its evolution Abomasnow, along with Munchlax, Chingling, and Croagunk.
Even more interestingly, the image also features three Legendary Pokemon from the Sinnoh region--Azelf, Uxie, and Mesprit--suggesting the trio will make their debut in Pokemon Go soon. On top of that, Niantic says the rare Ice Pokemon Delibird will also be available during the winter event, as will its Shiny variant.
Along with the new Pokemon, Niantic will offer a number of bonuses throughout the event. These will be metered out every few days. From December 18-22, players will earn twice as much Candy for catching and transferring Pokemon; from December 22-26, they'll receive twice the usual amount of Stardust for catching monsters; from December 26-30, players will get double catch XP; and from December 30 to the end of the event on January 2, Incubators will be twice as effective as normal.
Rounding out the bonuses, Niantic is giving players one Incubator each day when they spin their first Photo Disc. The developer also says that more types of Pokemon will be able to hatch from 7 km Eggs, and players will have a better chance of hatching monsters like Smoochum and Azurill. You can read more about the event on the official Pokemon website.
Before the holiday festivities begin in Pokemon Go, Niantic will host a special Raid weekend event from December 14-17. During that time, Ho-Oh and Lugia will reappear in Raid Battles at Gyms. Players will also have a chance to encounter their Shiny forms.
The X-Men franchise is a strange beast to keep up with. The timeline is muddled, there's a variety of offshoots that include everything from Wolverine to Deadpool, and the quality of the movies is all over the map. For every X-Men: First Class and X2: X-Men United, there's an X-Men: Apocalypse or X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
That's what makes one of the upcoming X-Men titles, The New Mutants, so interesting. For the first time in the franchise, this isn't your typical superhero film. New Mutants is diving deep into horror territory as it adapts a truly scare line of comics.
In a franchise littered with movies, New Mutants is trying something new to stand out and, though it's been repeatedly delayed, we can't wait to see how it turns out. That is, if it retains the horror style we've seen from clips and trailers thus far.
There are still a lot of things we don't know about New Mutants, which is surprising given that it was originally set to be released in 2018. However, after doing some digging, we've learned quite a bit about this horror offshoot of the X-Men films.
We have a release date, unless it gets delayed again
Originally, New Mutants was expected to release in early 2018. However, that was then pushed to February 2019 due to reshoots. Still, even that wasn't permanent. Now New Mutants won't be in theaters until August 2, 2019. That is unless it gets delayed one more time. Still, chances are you'll see it before that Gambit movie that's definitely never going to happen.
New Mutants a horror movie
When it comes to the X-Men films, you usually know exactly what you're getting yourself into. New Mutants is going in a very different direction, though. As the trailer released in 2017 shows, this isn't your run of the mill superhero film. Instead, it's a horror movie that happens to be populated with Marvel Comics characters, which is an exciting new direction to take the franchise.
But it has a John Hughes vibe
According to Anya Taylor-Joy, who stars in the film, the director wanted to mix the horror genre with the feel of a John Hughes movie like Sixteen Candles or The Breakfast Club. "And you can really, really feel that," she told Upbeat Entertainment in an interview.
Who is directing this X-Men film?
Josh Boone, most known as the director of the young adult drama The Fault in Our Stars will help New Mutants and also serves as screenwriter on the project. It's his first time tackling the superhero or horror genres, so it'll be interesting to see how it turns out.
It's heavily inspired by the comics
While we haven't seen a superhero horror movie before, New Mutants is sticking very close to the story as it unfolded in the comics. Boone told IGN that his pitch for the film was based on several issues from Volume 1 of The New Mutants. "We were incredibly inspired by the Demon Bear story which is probably the best, well-known New Mutants story," he said. "We also drew on movies like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Stephen King stuff, and even Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors."
The first trailer is seriously scary
When you hear something like an X-Men horror movie is happening, it's hard to imagine it being very scary. The first New Mutants trailer, though, is downright creepy. It shows the young mutants being held in a government facility that looks a lot like a haunted insane asylum and some deeply scary moments. There's no telling how much of the horror tone will remain after the reshoots New Mutants has gone through, but we are hopeful that the movie is as disturbing as the trailer.
This movie is set in the X-Men film continuity, somehow
The X-Men movie timeline is ridiculously complicated and only gets weirder with every single new film that's added. That said, New Mutants exists somewhere in that timeline. Where, exactly, we can't say. It will take place during present day, though, meaning it happens after most of the other X-Men films, save for Logan--and potentially the Deadpool movies.
Don't walk into New Mutants expecting to see the likes of Cyclops, Jean Grey, or Wolverine. Instead, the film will introduce a new group of mutants as they come to terms with their new abilities.
Here's the cast that's been announced so far:
Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik
Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane
Charlie Heaton as Cannonball
Henry Zaga as Sunspot
Blu Hunt as Mirage
Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes
Antonio Banderas may appear as a mystery villain
While so much is still unknown about New Mutants, it's been reported by the Tracking Board that Antonio Banderas will appear in a post-credits scene, introducing him as a villain. Originally, it was believed Jon Hamm would appear as Mr. Sinister, though that plan reportedly changed during reshoots.
Marilyn Manson recorded a song for the movie
Manson announced in May that his cover of Gerald McMahon's Cry Little Sister--a song that originally appeared in 1987's The Lost Boys--was recorded for New Mutants. Thanks to the movie's delay, the song was released in June but the film won't be out until sometime next year.
There are already plans for sequels with more mutants
If you love the New Mutants comics and are bummed that certain characters aren't slated for the film, have no fear. Boone is already planning for future movies. Speaking to IGN, he explained, "I will say we're going to introduce new characters in the next movie as well. Characters like Karma and Warlock, and all that will be in future movies."
Steam may have revolutionized how PC games are sold, but it's no longer the only big player in town. The latest challenger to Steam's dominance is the Epic Game Store, where you can pick up titles like Fortnite and Ashen, as well as exclusives like Supermassive's early access title Hades. To help spark interest in the new digital storefront, Epic is giving away a different game for free every two weeks. The first freebie is the open-ocean game Subnautica, which is available until December 27.
Normally selling for $25, Subnautica kicks off as you crash-land on a submerged alien world. Your first job is to make sure you can survive by finding food, fresh water, and crafting materials you can use to make everything from diving gear to underwater living quarters. As you progress, you'll assemble tools that let you venture further into the depths of the open world, acquiring better materials and finding clues to what made you crash in the first place.
In our Subnautica review, critic Brett Todd gave the game 9/10, writing, "Subnautica's story, scares, and beautifully rendered underwater setting make it one of the most fascinating survival games around. You will always have to grind away to a certain extent to gather necessary resources, but the overall experience is both accessible and refined. Subnautica may not make you eager to get back to the beach this summer, but right now there is no better virtual way to experience the beauty, and the terror, of the deep blue sea."
After Subnautica goes back to regular price, the Epic Game Store will make Super Meat Boy free to own between December 28 and January 10.
Discord also recently threw its hat in the PC game distribution ring, and it's not letting the Epic Game Store off without a fight. The company announced that in 2019, it will undercut every other competitor in terms of revenue sharing with developers. If competition is good for customers, let the games begin.
By Anonymous on Dec 15, 2018 02:33 am Our favorite enigmatic vendor is back with some new rolls on some old favorites. Here's where to go and the wares he has. Captured on PC.
The X-Men franchise moves forward, and in 2019, the 11th movie in said franchise--including the three Wolverine movies--will hit theaters. Ignoring the fact that the newest line of X-Men films completely messes with the franchise's timeline, the new series of movies, which debut with First Class, has been a blast, filled with more highs than lows.
The latest movie, titled Dark Phoenix, tries once again to tell the tale of Jean Grey turning into the Dark Phoenix. This is something 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand tried to do and failed at horribly. From the looks of the first trailer, the movie seems a bit more grounded and less focussed on how much they can cram into a single movie.
While we're still months away from its release, there is a fair amount we know about the next X-Men movie, probably because it was originally supposed to hit theaters during the winter, before it was pushed to late spring. So if you can't wait for the next installment in the X-Men franchise and have to take in as much about the movie as possible, we got you covered.
As it stands, Dark Phoenix will hit theaters on June 9, 2019, which has been pushed back a few times in the past year. The day after the first trailer's release, the movie was pushed back from February 14 to its new June date. Originally, it was supposed to come out in early November, but Fox kept moving the dates back. However, with Marvel's buyout of Fox coming to a close, movie dates were shifted around for many movies, so the studio wouldn't be competing with itself.
The cast
The latest X-Men movie has all the cast of characters we've fallen in love with in previous movies with a few added extras. The biggest addition to this year's installment is Jessica Chastain as Smith, a very mysterious role, which we'll talk a bit more about in detail later. Here's the cast for the movie.
Jennifer Lawrence is Raven/Mystique
Sophie Turner is Jean Grey/Phoenix
Nicholas Hoult is Hank McCoy/Beast
James McAvoy is Professor Charles Xavier
Michael Fassbender is Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto
Evan Peters is Peter Maximoff/Quicksilver
Kodi Smit-McPhee is Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler
Evan Jonigkeit is rumored to be Mortimer Toynbee/Toad
Tye Sheridan is Scott Summers/Cyclops
Alexandra Shipp is Ororo Munroe/Storm
Jessica Chastain is Smith
Who is directing?
Dark Phoenix will be directed by none other than Simon Kinberg, someone who has a long history with the X-Men franchise. While he was one of the writers of the aforementioned X-Men: The Last Stand--the movie that we all thought killed the franchise--Kinberg was also the screenwriter of Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse. Dark Phoenix will be his feature-length directorial debut.
The plot
Fans of the X-Men comic books have a good idea of what this movie will be about. Obviously, the film revolves around Jean Grey and her becoming the Dark Phoenix. As to whether or not its a cosmic entity is still unknown--we'll get to that--but from what we know, this movie is also very much about rifts growing between the X-Men and all mutants. Obviously, the X-Men will have to face Jean Grey and stop Dark Phoenix from destroying the world, as this franchise loves villains who can destroy the world.
The X-Men go to space, the final frontier… for X-Men movies
While we don't know the extent of how much the mutant team will spend in space, we do know for a fact they will be there. During New York Comic-Con, we got a look at roughly 10 minutes of the movie, where the team heads to space, and Jean Grey ends up becoming the Phoenix. We'll leave out the specifics, but this is an important moment because so much of Phoenix's origin is tied heavily to the cosmic part of the Marvel universe. Will the team head back space any time else during the movie, we're unsure about that at this time.
Rumors around the plot
Obviously, not everything is laid out all nice and fresh for everyone when it comes to the story. There is also Jessica Chastain's role of Smith, and it's hard to tell how she fits into the grand scheme of things, from what we've seen in the trailer. There are a couple theories floating around. One of which is that she's actually Lilandra or someone else involved with the Shi'ar Empire--some folks from space who want to put the Phoenix on trial. Or Smith is actually Mastermind, one of the members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, who manipulates Jean Grey in the comics. The latter seems more plausible. One thing is for sure though, Smith isn't Smith.
Lines drawn in the sand
This movie seems like it's going to drastically affect the X-Men team in future movies. Obviously, the timeline for the First Class run of movies is completely different than the original three X-Men movies from the early 2000s, so all bets are off. In the trailer, we see a greater rift between Magneto and Professor X, where Charles is running his X-Men school and Magneto has founded his all-mutant island/nation/piece of land called Genosha.
It doesn't stop there though, as there is a greater rift between Charles and Beast, who are supposed to be the closest characters in this series. This raises the question of what's going to happen by the end of this movie? Will there be multiple X-Men teams, one led by Charles and the other led by Beast?
Hans Zimmer comes out of retirement
Legendary composer Hans Zimmer called it quits on superhero movies after composing Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, he will continue to score Dark Phoenix as he found Simon Kinberg came in very prepared and professional, which was a plus in his book.
Titan has published a variety of comics based on Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise this past year, but one of the more notable has been Assassin's Creed: Conspiracies, a two-part standalone series previously only available in French. If you missed out on the individual issues and would like to experience the saga in its entirety, Titan has announced it is releasing both parts together as one graphic novel, and it hits comic stores next week.
The Assassin's Creed: Conspiracies collection releases on December 18, and it combines both issues of the series into one 104-page graphic novel. Unlike any of the video games, Conspiracies is set during World War II and follows the story of Eddie Gorm, a rookie member of the Assassin Brotherhood who must stop the Templars from unleashing an atomic weapon. Here's Titan's synopsis of the series:
"Europe, World War II: On the sidelines of the race for the atomic bomb, discover the story of Eddie Gorm and his integration into the Assassin Brotherhood while he infiltrates the Templars to foil their plan to create a devastating weapon."
Assassin's Creed: Conspiracies is written by Guillaume Dorison, with artwork by Jean-Baptise Hostache and Patrick Pion. Ahead of its release, Titan has provided GameSpot an exclusive preview of the upcoming collection. You can click through the gallery below to read a 10-page excerpt from the graphic novel.
Need a good reason to return to Dishonored 2 and its standalone DLC episode, Death of the Outsider, over the holidays? Bethesda has one--fire up the games and you'll unlock free new content, plus an old preorder bonus from before Dishonored 2 was released.
Publisher Bethesda announced the release of new content for Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider in a blog post. It runs down the two new offerings for both Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider. First is a Black and White mode that can change the feel of the game pretty significantly. Only one thing maintains its color when you turn on the black and white filter: blood. Sounds suitably noir, and as Bethesda puts it, extremely moody.
The second content addition is a Mission+ mode. Fire that up, and you can revisit any of the missions from either Dishonored or Death of the Outsider with all weapons and powers unlocked. The idea is to let you mess around with the full compliment of killing abilities available in the game, so you're free to experiment as you see fit with no constraints.
Finally, you can also get the Imperial Assassin's Pack in Dishonored 2, which was originally offered as a preorder bonus that comes with various in-game goodies:
Duelist's Luck bone charm
Void Favor bone charm
In-game Antique Serkonan Guitar for Emily or Corvo to interact with
In-game book: Goodbye, Karnaca – A Musician's Farewell
500 bonus coins
While the new stuff in Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider is free, it does require a step to unlock. You'll need to login to a Bethesda account from the main menu screen of both games to get your new content. If you don't have one, you can register for a Bethesda account on the publisher's website, Bethesda.net.

When you weren't looking, Titans somehow became the best DC adaptation on TV. Now, with it's Season 1 finale, the DC Universe original series looks to be doubling down on just how insane things can get in this world of vigilantes. Thus far, we've met two Robins--Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. And it's about time Batman showed up.
The Batman shown in the trailer, though, likely isn't the one you're used to. This Batman has snapped, and he's on a murderous rampage. As the two-minute clip reveals, Commissioner Gordon is dead and, as a means of revenge, Batman is set on killing the Joker.
This dark turn fits in well with the tone of what we've seen from Titans so far, but pitting Robin against Batman is a major moment for DC lore. With Bruce Wayne so off the rails and only Dick to stop him, the Season 1 finale could be one of the most epic DC moments we've ever seen play out in live action.
Of course, that all depends on just how willing Titans is to show Batman. Thus far, he's been mentioned quite a bit and shown in the shadows. The trailer includes a lot more of the Caped Crusader, though we never see his face--every shot is from behind.
Given that this episode is being promoted at Robin vs. Batman, it seems as though they'll have to show Batman--and give him a voice. At this point, though, no casting for the Dark Knight has been announced.
Whatever the case, the trailer of blood he's leaving throughout Gotham city--we see the bodies of Two-Face, Riddler, and the Joker in the trailer--is pretty disturbing. The death of Commissioner Gordon would surely impact Batman on a deep level, but will Titans commit to making him the villain he's painted as in the trailer?
Thankfully, you're only going to have to wait a week to find out. The Season 1 finale of Titans premieres on Friday, December 21, on DC Universe.
It wasn't long ago that Warner Bros. Entertainment released a statement regarding rumors of Henry Cavill's exit from the Superman role. Now, nearly three months after those rumors began circulating, Aquaman star and fellow Justice League member Jason Momoa has attempted to dispel any uncertainty about Cavill hanging up the cape.
According to Entertainment Tonight, Momoa talked to the publication during a premiere of the recently released DC film, Aquaman. In the exclusive interview, Momoa said Cavill isn't going anywhere anytime soon. "I just talked to Henry... He's absolutely not [leaving the character]," he told ET. "[Cavill] loves the character. He's not. One hundred percent."
It was rumored back in September that Cavill would no longer play the role of Superman after negotiations of a cameo in the forthcoming Shazam film fell through. What followed was a series of posts from both Cavill and Warner Bros., with the British actor posting a bizarre video to Instagram and Warner Bros. saying, "While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we've always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged."
What caused Cavill to pull out from the Shazam cameo was not a lack of interest from the British actor or a fallout between him and Warner Bros., but a scheduling conflict between Shazam, which stars Asher Angel (Jolene, Andi Mack) and Zachary Levi (Tangled, Thor: The Dark World), and the latest entry in the Mission Impossible franchise, Mission Impossible: Fallout.
Neither Henry Cavill nor Warner Bros. have commented on Momoa's statements. In our Aquaman review, we called the film "a movie with its own over the top, tongue in cheek, inconsistent, massive, irreverent, CGI-soaked tone, aesthetic, and world."
Aquaman is scheduled to hit theatres on December 21.
