Star Wars: Battlefront Has 12 Multiplayer Maps at Launch

By Anonymous on May 04, 2015 11:56 pm

The Star Wars Day announcements keep coming.

Developer DICE on Monday revealed that Star Wars: Battlefront, the upcoming first- and third-person shooter based on the original trilogy, will include a total of twelve multiplayer maps upon release in November.

DICE announced the number in a post on the EA Star Wars website. The developer points out that this does not include locations from the game's co-op "Missions" mode, which is separate from Battlefront's main multiplayer offering. You can also bet that more will be added as DLC later on.

A full list of maps for Battlefront has not been announced yet, but DICE mentioned three. These include familiar places like Endor and Hoth, as well as Sullust (above), a new environment referenced in the Star Wars fiction but never fully explored. Some of the maps will support the 40-player Walker Assault mode, while others have been purposefully designed for close-quarters combat.

Developers from DICE traveled to Iceland to capture reference photos for Sullust, a volcanic location which lead environment artists Andrew Hamilton describes as being "very barren in a beautiful way." For a closer look at Sullust and DICE's trip to Iceland, check out the images in the gallery below.

Battlefront launches November 17 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. DICE is also offering a free DLC pack based on The Force Awakens called The Battle of Jakku. This arrives December 1 for people who pre-order and December 8 for everyone else.

New Star Wars Episode 7 Images Released

By Anonymous on May 04, 2015 11:24 pm

More plot details for the upcoming movie Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens have been revealed today--on Star Wars Day--through Vanity Fair. The magazine has the scoop on the characters actors Adam Driver (Girls) and Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave) will play in J.J. Abrams' upcoming sci-fi epic.

Driver will play a Darth Vader-like bad guy named Kylo Ren, who lives on an ice planet and has Stormtroopers at his command, as you can see in the image below.

We've also learned that Nyong'o will play a CGI character named Maz Kanata. It's unclear which side she's fighting for, but we do know she's some form of pirate. Award-winning effects studio Industrial Light & Magic is responsible for bringing her character to life in the movie.

Head over to Vanity Fair to see even more photos from the set of The Force Awakens.

The movie opens on December 18, 2015. Last month at the Star Wars Celebration, we saw a new trailer for The Force Awakens and learned a lot about DICE's upcoming shooter Star Wars: Battlefront.

Nintendo Apologizes for Amiibo Shortages, Promises Better Communcication

By Anonymous on May 04, 2015 10:28 pm

Nintendo on Monday released a new statement regarding its Amiibo line of plastic toys, apologizing for shortages and promising better communication with fans regarding supply.

"We appreciate the enthusiasm that our fans continue to show toward Amiibo," Nintendo started off. "Sales for the product have exceeded our expectations. We understand how frustrating it can be at times if consumers are unable to find certain figures, and we apologize for that."

2859616-amiibo.jpg

North American Amiibo supply has been impacted, in part, by the west coast labor disputes, which led to shipment delays. Nintendo can't exactly be blamed for that.

But the company did acknowledge that its communication with fans regarding Amiibo supply hasn't always been the best, and it hopes to improve this going forward.

"Nintendo plans to make it easier for consumers to know when new Amiibo are on the way, through Nintendo press announcements, timely updates on our social media channels, and working closely with retailers," the company said.

Overall, Nintendo said it is hoping to increase the total number of Amiibo units it can manufacture and ship to retail in order to meet demands. But the company acknowledged that fans might still see Amiibo supply shortages from time to time for select characters.

"We may continue to see consumer demand outpace supply levels for certain characters at times, but we will do our best to prevent that from happening," Nintendo said. "As our library of amiibo continues to grow, some figures will be easier to find than others. We are constantly looking for the opportunity to reissue amiibo and are already making plans to bring back some currently out-of-stock Amiibo figures. Stay tuned for details."

This isn't the first time Nintendo has spoken out regarding Amiibo demand. Just last month, the company said that Amiibo demand had "smashed" Nintendo's expectations.

For more on the Amiibo supply situation, read GameSpot editor Alexa Ray Corriea's opinion piece: "The Amiibo Frenzy Is Getting Ridiculous."

Amiibo, along with Skylanders and Disney Infinity, will face a new toys-to-life competitor this year in the form of LEGO Dimensions from Warner Bros. That game launches this fall, featuring toys based on juggernaut franchises like Lord of the Rings, Batman, Wizard of Oz, and others.
