Capcom Steam Sale Offers Cheap Resident Evil, Dead Rising, DMC Games

By Chris Pereira on May 14, 2015 11:35 pm

A big sale on Capcom games has just kicked off on Steam, discounting many of the publisher's PC titles for the next few days.

Most notably, a number of Resident Evil games can currently be had for cheap. Reflecting recent Xbox and PlayStation sales, the first episode of Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is just $3. The remaining episodes are full price, but owning just one episode still gets you full access to the game's entertaining Raid mode, albeit with a limited number of characters.

Other Resident Evil games on sale include last year's RE4 re-release ($8), RE5 ($7), and the RE HD Remaster ($15), among others.

If RE isn't your thing, there are still deals to be had, such as Devil May Cry ($10), Strider ($7.50), Bionic Commando: Rearmed ($2), and Dark Void Zero ($1).

Check out the full list of deals below. These prices are available on Steam from now through the weekend, coming to an end on either May 18 or 19, depending upon the specific game.

Destiny House of Wolves Launch Trailer Arrives, as Work Continues on Update Bug

By Eddie Makuch on May 14, 2015 11:31 pm

With the release of Destiny's House of Wolves expansion just a few days away, Bungie--apparently confident that issues around the game's latest patch won't delay its arrival--released a launch trailer for the add-on. The video provides an overview of the House of Wolves content, including its new multiplayer maps, the Prison of Elders and Trials of Osiris modes, and more.

On Wednesday, Bungie announced that it discovered a "late-breaking technical issue" related to Destiny update 1.2.0. This patch was released last week, but has not yet been activated.

Bungie has now provided a new update regarding the progress being made to overcome this issue. The developer said it's been able to isolate the problem, and work is now underway to fix it.

"Solutions for technical issues that have delayed the delivery of updates have been identified," Bungie community manager David "Deej" Dague said in the developer's forums. "Work is ongoing and we'll release the new content and the Patch Notes as soon as we can. Stand by for more information on timing."

House of Wolves, due May 19, is Destiny's second expansion. It follows December's The Dark Below. Looking ahead, Bungie will release more content for Destiny this summer, before the game's most substantial expansion yet is released this fall.

You can buy House of Wolves through the $35 Destiny Expansion Pass--which also includes The Dark Below--or by itself for $20.

Some GTA 5 PC Mods Reportedly Include Malware

By Chris Pereira on May 14, 2015 10:51 pm

Certain mods for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V may include malware, according to research done by a number of players.

A post today on GTAForums (via Reddit) raises the possibility of mods including some kind of malicious software. The exact nature of this remains unclear, and we don't yet know all of the mods that might be delivering the code to players' computers.

In at least one case, it looks as if running the game with infected mods installs a trojan called fade.exe, which then creates log files--possibly of activity on the computer--and transmits that information online. This apparently only happens after opening the game with the mods in question; simply downloading them may not infect you.

It initially seemed this could all be circumstantial, as the original forum poster was tracking the appearance of fade.exe back to when the game was first run with mods. However, other users have since chimed in, reporting they, too, have found traces of the malware. Others claimed they've inspected certain mod files and found they are infected with malware. Allegedly, these mods include NoClip and Angry Planes, possibly among others, though we haven't been able to verify this ourselves.

If you're used infected mods but run antivirus and anti-malware software, it's possible any malware was caught before it could do its thing. Still, if you have run mods, you should change any of your online passwords, and exercise caution before running mods.

That advice has always been true of downloading game mods. This isn't the first instance of them being used to transmit malware, but GTA V is no doubt a prime target due to both its popularity and the lack of official mod support.

Watch Witcher 3's Stunning Cinematic Launch Trailer

By Eddie Makuch on May 14, 2015 10:37 pm

Ahead of the game's release next week, Polish developer CD Projekt Red on Thursday released a new cinematic trailer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Titled "A Night to Remember," the video is totally gorgeous and quite creepy and unexpected. We won't spoil it for you. Watch and let us know what you think.

Reviews for The Witcher 3 came online this week, and the RPG is receiving widespread praise. GameSpot scored the game a perfect 10/10, only the ninth title in our site's history to receive that score.

"Where the Witcher 2 sputtered to a halt, The Witcher 3 is always in a crescendo, crafting battle scenarios that constantly one-up the last, until you reach the explosive finale and recover in the glow of the game's quiet denouement," reviewer Kevin VanOrd wrote.

CD Projekt Red will release a day-one update for The Witcher 3 that improves the frame rate and makes other technical tweaks. What's more, Sony recently shared a new PlayStation 4 video that speaks to the size of game's massive world.

Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders Voice Actor Quitting The Simpsons

By Eddie Makuch on May 14, 2015 10:08 pm

Just a week after Fox renewed The Simpsons for two more seasons, it's been confirmed that veteran voice actor Harry Shearer--the voice of Mr. Burns and Ned Flanders--is leaving the show.

"As The Simpsons continues its 27th and 28th seasons, Harry Shearer will not be within the show," showrunner Al Jean told CNN Money today.

In addition to Burns and Flanders, Shearer voices Principal Skinner, Reverend Lovejoy, Kent Brockman, Waylon Smithers, Dr. Hibbert, Lenny Leonard, Otto Mann, Rainier Wolfcastle, and Dr. Marvin Monroe.

Basically, he's a Simpsons legend, and the show going on without him is devastating news for fans.

Jean explained that Fox has no plans to "kill off" Shearer's characters. However, the team will "replace them with the most talented members of the voice over community."

As for why Shearer is leaving the show, CNN Money cites issues involving his freedom to do work outside of The Simpsons, something he says he's been afforded since the show started in 1989.

Jean said Shearer was "offered the same deal as the rest of the cast, but turned it down."

In leaving Springfield behind, Shearer is passing over a reported $14 million deal for the upcoming two seasons. This deal, according to a CNN Money source, included terms that would allow Shearer to do outside work.

The Simpsons' latest two-season renewal will bring the total number of episodes to 625. The show is already the longest-running scripted program in TV history.

The franchise lives on in gaming through EA's free-to-play mobile game The Simpsons: Tapped Out. What's more The Simpsons playsets are rumored for upcoming toys-to-life game LEGO Dimensions.

As pointed out by EW, a Season 10 episode of The Simpsons sort of predicted Shearer's departure. Watch the clip below.

Rainbow: Six Siege Release Date Confirmed

By Tamoor Hussain on May 14, 2015 09:32 pm

Ubisoft has announced Rainbow Six: Siege will be released on October 13.

The game, which will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, is developed by Ubisoft Montreal and is a strategic team-based military shooter with highly destructible maps.

"Players will engage in sieges, a new style of assault where enemies have the means to transform their environments into modern strongholds while Rainbow Six teams lead the assault to breach the enemy position," Ubisoft explains.

Ubisoft has also released a short trailer, which you can watch below.

Ubisoft has high hopes for for the upcoming shooter, recently saying it believes Rainbow Six: Siege has the potential to become the best-selling shooter in the company's history, surpassing Far Cry 4.

"Over its lifetime, we believe Rainbow Six: Siege has the potential to become the highest-selling shooter in Ubisoft's history," stated Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot during a recent call with investors.

CFO Alain Martine pointed out that Rainbow Six games traditionally sell about three million units, "versus Far Cry [4] that this year has exceeded seven million."

"We believe that Rainbow Six--because of replayability and multiplayer--might have a potential to [do] better than Far Cry over its lifetime," Martine added.

Ubisoft also recently delayed The Division until 2016, it did not announce a new release date for the game.

By Eddie Makuch on May 14, 2015 09:23 pm

In March, Nintendo released a special-edition gold Mario Amiibo. It was exclusive to Walmart, but the silver version will be available everywhere.

The silver Mario Amiibo toy will be compatible with the following Wii U and 3DS games:

Despite widespread supply shortages, Amiibo shipments recently crossed 10.5 million.

Sony Treating PS4 No Man's Sky Like a First-Party Game

By Eddie Makuch on May 14, 2015 09:04 pm

Sony has pledged to "put the full weight of PlayStation" behind upcoming ambitious indie game No Man's Sky as part of the company's effort to treat the PlayStation 4 title like a first-party game, even if it does come to other platforms later.

"No Man's Sky has been treated as if it was from one of our internal studios," Sony UK managing director Fergal Gara told MCV. "We have been working very closely with the developers and bringing it into our release program as if we had made it."

"We are not going to treat it any differently and we are going to put the full weight of PlayStation behind it," he added. "If it all comes together as well as expected, it will be treated like a first-party release; it is not a self-published small indie title on the platform."

No Man's Sky is a timed-exclusive for PS4, launching first on Sony's new console before coming to PC later down the road. The game is due out later this year for PS4, while a release date for the PC edition has not been announced. It remains to be seen if developer Hello Games will also bring the game to Xbox One.

For its part, Microsoft has said that it "would love" to see No Man's Sky come to Xbox One.

It wouldn't be the first time that Sony treats a multiplatform title like a first-party game, as the company did the same with Bungie's shooter Destiny.

Also in the interview, Gara reveals that Sony may end up releasing a boxed version of No Man's Sky, though this has not been confirmed.

"It is more about making the right decision for the right title at the right time," he explained. "It is entirely possible that we will release some of these games together, digitally and physically, or one after another, but it will be decided on a title-by-title basis."

For more on No Man's Sky, an open-world space game that will be truly massive thanks to its procedurally generated worlds, check out GameSpot's previous coverage and some images in the gallery below.

Play Xbox With Your Mom for Jimmy Fallon

By Eddie Makuch on May 14, 2015 08:33 pm

Comedian and late night TV host Jimmy Fallon, a longtime and enthusiastic supporter of video games, has announced a new gamer-focused competition for The Tonight Show, and it involves your mom.

The "Xbox With My Mom Contest" is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Basically, all you need to do is upload a video to YouTube of yourself playing video games with your mom. Make sure to add "#XboxWithMyMomContest" to the title.

The grand prize winner will receive an Xbox One console and a trip to New York for a taping of The Tonight Show, among other things. Three runner-ups will receive Xbox One games, Halo and Forza goodies, and Tonight Show memorabilia.

According to the official contest rules, videos must either include an Xbox console/controllers or show no console at all. Videos will be judged on two criteria: appropriateness to the theme (50%) and humor (50%).

You can see all the submission rules here. The deadline to send in your video is May 18.

The contest page is already filled with videos. Take a look at them here. This is actually at least the second time Fallon has asked people to film themselves playing video games with their moms.

GTA 5 PC Music Video Contest Announced

By Eddie Makuch on May 14, 2015 08:02 pm

Rockstar Games has announced a new competition that challenges Grand Theft Auto V PC players to use the Rockstar Editor video editing suite to make a music video.

The first ever Rockstar Editor video contest calls on players to create what will be the official music video for the song "Leave" by Wavves, a track featured in GTA V on the new in-game radio station The Lab.

Here's how the band Wavves sums up the track and what it's looking for with a music video:

"The song is about leaving a bad situation. Whether that means a criminal enterprise or activity, or a bad romantic relationship, or something else entirely is up to you to interpret as the music video director. Just have fun with it and don't be afraid to get a little weird along the way."

You can listen to "Leave" through the SoundCloud embed below.

The grand prize winner will receive a G910 Orion Spark Gaming Keyboard and G510 Proteus Core Gaming Mouse. These will come with a laser-engraved Rockstar Editor logo, along with another engraving of your Social Club ID. The winner will also receive a "deluxe prize pack" of GTA V gear, as well as a $100 gift card to the Rockstar Warehouse. Two runner-ups will also receive the prize pack and gift card.

To enter the contest, all you have to do is create a video using the Rockstar Editor (no third-party editing software is allowed), and publish it to the Social Club. You'll need to tag the video with the world "leave" to ensure that it gets entered into the content. Submissions will be accepted through June 8, after which the band Wavves and a Rockstar team will view the videos and determine a winner.

Full details on the submission process and video parameters are available on Rockstar's website.

In addition, Rockstar has announced that everyone who uploads a Rockstar Editor GTA V PC video--any video, not just a music video--to the Social Club by June 8 will receive an in-game t-shirt featuring the logo for the fictional film The Loneliest Robot in Great Britain.

The Rockstar Editor is currently available only on PC, though a version of the toolset is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as early as this summer. The in-game radio station The Lab, also currently available exclusively on PC, will be released for the console editions sometime later.

Elder Scrolls Online Xbox One/PS4 Does Not Lock Out People Who Buy Used [UPDATE]

By Eddie Makuch on May 14, 2015 07:44 pm

[UPDATE] Bethesda has released a new statement on the matter, confirming that the earlier statement was incorrect.

"The physical console version of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited does not require a one-time game code; as with any other boxed PS4 / Xbox One game only the game disc is needed for verification. Any previous statements counter to this were incorrect."

The original story is below.

Developer Zenimax Online Studios has confirmed that disc-based copies of The Elder Scrolls Online for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will require users to register a unique code. Thus, people who buy a second-hand copy or rent the MMORPG will be locked out.

"You will need a unique game registration code in order to play the game, and used copies will not be eligible to receive a key if the code has already been redeemed," a developer said in the game's forums.

This is much the same way that it works on PC.

"The code included in the box is to activate your ESOTU account and the discs are for installation purposes," Zenimax said. "If you own the disc but don't have a key, you'll be able to install the game and reach the login screen, but you won't be able to log in and access the game without an active ESOTU account."

Since The Elder Scrolls Online has not yet been released for consoles, it remains to be seen how rental companies like Gamefly and Red Box, along with retailers like GameStop and Best Buy, will handle this situation. You would hope they would alert shoppers to the game's unique scenario.

We'll have more information as it becomes available.

The Elder Scrolls Online was released in 2014 for PC, and launches for Xbox One and PS4 next month. In January, publisher Bethesda announced that the MMO was doing away with mandatory subscription fees. The game is not entirely free-to-play, as users still need to pay once to buy it, but the $15/month fee is no longer required. Alongside this announcement, Bethesda rebranded the game Tamriel Unlimited.

Xbox E3 2015 Press Conference Dated, Some Exciting Reveals Saved for Gamescom

By Tamoor Hussain on May 14, 2015 07:37 pm

Microsoft has announced its E3 2015 press conference will take place on June 15, starting at 9:30 AM PDT.

According to the platform holder, the briefing will give viewers the chance to "check out everything from in-depth looks at previously-announced games to trailers for our unannounced titles coming in 2015 and beyond."

As with previous years, the Xbox E3 2015 briefing will be streamed on Xbox.com, viewable through the Xbox Live Events Player, on the Xbox One and Xbox 360, as well as on Windows Phone.

The event will also be available to watch during "Xbox: Game On" on Spike TV in the U.S. and Canada from 9:30 AM PDT and 12:30 PM EDT respectively.

Xbox Daily: Live @ E3 will also be returning to provide "breaking news, exclusive announcements, trailer reveals, game demos, and interviews with game creators." Confirmed guests include Xbox boss Phil Spencer, and "guests from 343 Industries, Turn 10 Studios, Crystal Dynamics, and others."

Xbox Daily will air on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday between 4 and 5 PM PDT.

Interestingly, Microsoft also said it will be saving announcements for Gamescom in August, but added that it still has a strong lineup for E3.

"This year, we have an amazing games lineup to share (who knew it'd be so hard to pack all of our exclusive E3 premieres into an hour and a half?)," it said on the Xbox News Wire. "So we're saving a lot of exciting reveals for Gamescom in August."

Microsoft has previously said it will be trying something a little different this year at E3, though it did not detail what that will entail. Thus far, it has revealed it will focus more on first-party games this year, but Spencer has indicated Microsoft will be looking to shake things up in other ways.

Microsoft will have "some interesting changes this year for briefing and the week," Spencer previously said, responding to a fan's question on Twitter about Microsoft's plans for E3.

It is likely that Windows 10 will feature quite heavily in the press conference. Microsoft has touted a new and improved built-in Xbox app, cross-platform play support for games like Fable Legends, and even a game-streaming application for the upcoming operating system.

Another likelihood is the Gears of War remaster, which has not yet been announced officially, but videos of which have leaked.

How Nintendo's Landmark Theme Park Deal With Universal Happened

By Eddie Makuch on May 14, 2015 07:01 pm

Last week, gaming giant Nintendo and theme park behemoth Universal Parks & Resorts announced a landmark partnership to bring Nintendo's iconic characters to its amusement parks. The announcement paves the way for Mario to sit alongside Harry Potter, The Simpsons, Transformers, and other major media franchises that already have dedicated areas at Universal parks around the world.

But how did the major deal come to be?

Nintendo chief executive Satoru Iwata offered an explanation during a recent earnings briefing with analysts, the English translation of which was published today. He said discussions with Universal executives began in April 2014, when the theme park first proposed the idea to Nintendo.

"We met with people from NBC Universal who proposed the possibility of the theme park business to us. Even before then, the possibility of theme park attractions (with Nintendo IP) had become an often-discussed topic in society," he explained. "Even inside Nintendo, the possibility had been discussed several times. But we had not made this a reality because, on each occasion, the time was not ripe yet or we were not able to find an appropriate partner with whom to work."

Iwata shared that Universal provided Nintendo with a "very detailed proposal" for its theme park ideas during the initial meeting. No specific rides or attractions have been revealed to date; those details are coming later. And it could be a while, as Nintendo and Universal are only in the "concept" phase now.

What's more, Iwata said Nintendo's confidence in Universal as a partner was bolstered by the fact that their first meeting took place not long after Universal opened the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Iwata and his team got to "learn precisely" how Universal built that park, and this gave Nintendo assurance that the company would be able to pull off a similar plan for Nintendo.

In addition, Iwata said Universal--which is owned by Comcast--possessed the kind of corporate culture Nintendo was looking for in a partner. He said he was inspired by this initial meeting, and returned to Japan to inform Mario creator and Nintendo director Shigeru Miyamoto that he wanted to move forward. After more meetings in Japan and the United States, which Nintendo game producers and the people tasked with creating the actual attractions attended, it was decided that the deal would go through.

"We confirmed that we share a lot of common ground between our corporate cultures, and because parts of the proposal made us really excited, we have decided to work together on a long-term basis," Iwata said.

What Nintendo theme park attractions would you like to see at Universal? My vote is for Mario Kart go-karts or a Pokemon Snap ride. Share your ideas in the comments below.

Metal Gear Publisher Konami: Mobile Is Now Our Main Platform

By Tamoor Hussain on May 14, 2015 06:27 pm

A key executive at Konami has said the company will "pursue mobile games aggressively" going forward, and that smartphones will be considered as its "main platform."

Speaking to Nikkei, as translated by a user on gaming forum NeoGAF, Konami company president Hideki Hayakawa said the future of gaming is in mobile.

"Our main platforms will be mobiles," he began. "Gaming has spread to a number of platforms, but at the end of the day, the platform that is always closest to us, is mobile. Mobile is where the future of gaming lies.

"With multiplatform games, there's really no point in dividing the market into categories anymore. Mobiles will take on the new role of linking the general public to the gaming world."

In recent Konami financial reports Konami highlighted free-to-play design driven games as key areas of success for the company. Hayakawa said this strategy would be a key focus going forward.

"Following the pay-as-you-play model of games like Power Pro and Winning Eleven with additional content, our games must move from selling things like 'items' to selling things like 'features,'" he said.

"We saw with these games that even people who buy physical games are motivated to buy extra content. The success of Power Pro especially has motivated us to actively push more of our popular series onto mobile than ever before."

It's important to note that Hayakawa was being interviewed for a business focused publication and, as such, it is in his interest to buoy the area of his company's operation that has shown to be the most successful in Japan.

Additionally, the Japanese market has already largely shifted to be mobile-oriented, with even the biggest console game developers creating experiences tailored for mobile devices, as evidenced by Nintendo's recent move towards the market.

Nintendo's entered into a deal with the global mobile games publisher DeNA to create "new gaming applications featuring Nintendo IP, which [both companies] will develop specifically for smart devices."

In previous earnings reports, Konami has mentioned its intention to expand its mobile game operation multiple times. Although Hayakawa's latest quotes aren't a surprising new statement of intentions, they do serve as the most direct example of Konami's diminishing interest in consoles.

Elsewhere in the interview, Hayakawa said the company hopes "that our overseas games such as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Winning Eleven continue to do well, but we are always thinking about how to push our franchises onto mobile there too."

It is expected that Metal Gear maestro Hideo Kojima will leave Konami when the latest entry in the series is out.

Konami has removed the Kojima Productions logo from official artwork for The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes, as well as references to titles being "A Hideo Kojima Game" from marketing material.

The Kojima Productions logo was also removed from the Silent Hills/P.T. website, before Silent Hills was outright cancelled.

Nintendo's New Console, NX, Is Not a Simple "Replacement" for Wii U or 3DS

By Eddie Makuch on May 14, 2015 06:07 pm

Nintendo's next dedicated game platform, codenamed NX, is not meant to be a simple "replacement" for the Wii U or 3DS, according to chief executive Satoru Iwata. The English translation of Iwata's remarks from Nintendo's latest earnings report were published today, featuring the new information about NX.

"Though I cannot confirm when it will be launched or any other details of the system, since I have confirmed that it will be 'a dedicated video game platform with a brand new concept,' it should mean that we do not intend it to become a simple 'replacement' for Nintendo 3DS or Wii U," Iwata explained.

This suggests that when the NX is released, it will be supported alongside Nintendo's existing platforms. Nintendo took a similar approach with the GameCube and Wii, releasing marquee RPG Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess for both systems.

Interestingly, Nintendo recently delayed The Legend of Zelda for Wii U after discovering "several new possibilities" for the project. These have not been announced, and the game's release window is now slated as "TBD."

Iwata also pointed out that the manner and situations in which people play home consoles and handheld devices have recently become "rather different, especially between Japan and overseas." The executive teased that the NX, in a bid to appeal to the widest possible audience, will offer a "brand new concept."

"Since we are always thinking about how to create a new platform that will be accepted by as many people around the world as possible, we would like to offer to them 'a dedicated video game platform with a brand new concept' by taking into consideration various factors, including the playing environments that differ by country," he explained. "This is all that I can confirm today."

So when will we hear more about NX? Not until 2016, unfortunately.

Iwata explained that Nintendo won't discuss the NX, or its smartphone and quality of life initiatives, during the company's E3 briefing next month. "I hope you will understand that if you expect us to discuss NX during the upcoming E3 show, you will just end up being disappointed," he said.

In addition to the NX, Nintendo is working on a new cross-platform membership program and an "evolved" version of its Club Nintendo loyalty program. The company's first mobile games, developed in partnership with DeNA, will arrive later this year.

After Uncharted 4 Delay, Sony Says No Concerns About PS4's Holiday Lineup

By Eddie Makuch on May 14, 2015 06:00 pm

Despite high-profile first-party PlayStation 4 games like Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and Ratchet & Clank shifting to 2016, Sony has no concerns about the company's holiday 2015 lineup. That's according to Sony UK managing director Fergal Gara, who spoke about the subject in a recent interview with MCV.

"I won't go into any detail now," Gara said. "There is plenty for gamers to get excited about already, such as Tearaway for PS4 and No Man's Sky. That's just the start of what is on the table right now. So I don't have any concerns that we will have a lack of strong software for PS4 this peak."

Gara's comments ("just the start of what's on the table...") suggest that Sony has more to reveal before the holiday season. One likely venue for game announcements would be E3 2015 next month. Sony's briefing is expected to take place on the evening of Monday, June 15.

The executive went on to say that part of the reason for a gap in new PS4 releases comes down to developers still getting accustomed to the new hardware.

"My sense is that the new platforms have opened up the ambitions of developers and the capabilities of what they can achieve," he explained. "What has then happened since has been a bit of rushing to market and a couple of not perfect launches. That's perhaps driven some conservatism to not overly force this and make sure we get it right--there's been an adjustment of pace."

"The good news is that the ability to stick to timelines will improve as people get experience of the hardware under their belts," he added. "I have been hearing stories from around the industry that give me assurance that developers have got a better grasp on things, so we will be in increasingly good shape."

By comparison, Microsoft has high-profile Xbox One exclusives like Rise of the Tomb Raider, Halo 5: Guardians, and Forza Motorsport 6 in the pipeline for his holiday. There could be even more exclusives on the way for this year, as Microsoft is also rumored to be working on a Gears of War Xbox One remaster.

The full MCV interview touches on other subjects, including the PS4 vs. Xbox One price war and more.

Xbox One Owners Can Play Madden NFL 16 Before Everyone Else

By Eddie Makuch on May 14, 2015 05:12 pm

EA Sports' upcoming professional football game Madden NFL 16, which features Odell Beckham Jr. on the cover, will be playable first on Xbox One by way of EA Access. Subscribers typically get to play upcoming EA games five days before their public launch, but EA has not announced specifics around Madden yet.

The news comes by way of Microsoft marketing executive Aaron Greenberg, who wrote on Twitter: "Hot new @EAMaddenNFL 16 announced, play it early with @EAAccess, only on #XboxOne"

Madden NFL 16 launches this August. It's also coming to PlayStation 4, as well as last-generation consoles like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. EA Access, however, is available only on Xbox One.

Walking Dead Season 3 Won't Arrive in 2015

By Tamoor Hussain on May 14, 2015 04:20 pm

The third season of TellTale's The Walking Dead episodic game series will not be released in 2015, its developer has confirmed.

TellTale's director of PR, Job Stauffer, confirmed the news, but added that "what [he is] seeing this week will be, and it is insanely cool."

TellTale previously said that there may be something new to play in its Walking Dead series before the new season is officially released. It is likely that Stauffer is referring to this in his Tweet.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days was released in the space between the first and second seasons of the game, which means it is possible that TellTale is planning a similar intermediary between season two and three, though this is only speculation.

TellTale is currently working on Game of Thrones and Tales from the Borderlands series, as well as a game based on Minecraft.

Telltale Games and Marvel Games have also announced a partnership, the results of which is due in 2017.

Gears of War HD Remaster Video Leaks Online

By Tamoor Hussain on May 14, 2015 02:59 pm

Footage of what is believed to be Microsoft's rumoured Gears of War remaster has appeared online.

Gameplay videos were originally posted on the XboxDVR website, which gathers clips recorded using the Xbox One's integrated capture technology. However, these clips have since been removed.

Naturally, the footage has now appeared in alternative locations. You can watch two clips here and here. Additionally, images of the game have also popped up on NeoGAF, one of which you can see below.

When asked for a statement on this leak, a Microsoft spokesperson said: "We have nothing to announce at this time."

In April, reports suggested Microsoft was working on an HD remaster of the original Gears of War for Xbox One. Additional sources later said Gears of War on Xbox One features better lighting and improved texture quality.

Multiplayer reportedly runs at 60 frames per second and will feature new cinematics.

Although Microsoft has not yet officially announced the game, it has been reported that Splash Damage, the UK-based studio behind Brink and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, is development Gears of War HD remaster.

Microsoft acquired the Gears of War franchise from Epic Games last year, and tasked its newly established Black Tusk Studios to create a new entry in the action-shooter series for Xbox One. This project is believed to be a entirely new entry in the series.

Black Tusk producer Rod Fergusson previously teased that fans should tune in to E3 in June, suggesting the new Gears of War may appear during the show.

Blizzard Drops Ban Hammer on Popular World of Warcraft Bot

By Tamoor Hussain on May 14, 2015 01:58 pm

Blizzard has issued temporary bans to a large number of World of Warcraft players for using bots.

In a post on the official World of Warcraft forums, community manager Josh Allen (AKA "Lore") confirmed the company had "recently taken action against a large number of accounts that were found to be using third-party programs that automate gameplay."

One of the popular bots that has been cracked down on is HonorBuddy, which runs around collecting honour in PvP without actually engaging anyone. This requires no input from the player.

HonorBuddy claims to have over 200,000 registered users. On its forum, multiple users have said they received an e-mail from Blizzard specifying the ban will last six months.

"We're committed to providing an equal and fair playing field for everyone in World of Warcraft," said Blizzard.

"[We] will continue to take action against those found in violation of our Terms of Use. Cheating of any form will not be tolerated."

Bashiok, another World of Warcraft community manager, further clarified on Twitter that any program that automates the playing of WoW is considered to be breaking Blizzard's terms of use.

Blizzard previously won a lawsuit against a World of Warcraft bot company for $7 million.

Outside of World of Warcraft, Blizzard is gearing up to launch a new MOBA called Heroes of the Storm, which is pitched as a competitive online game in the same vein as League of Legends or DotA 2, but said to be more approachable.

It is also working on a team-based shooter called Overwatch, which it has described as a "pick-up-and-play" FPS. Find out more about the game in GameSpot's in-depth report on Overwatch's characters and gameplay.

Deadly Premonition Director's Next Game Might Be Too "Perverted"

By Zorine Te on May 14, 2015 10:15 am

Hidetaka "Swery" Suehiro, writer and director of Deadly Premonition and Xbox One/PC exclusive D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die has revealed some details about a story he hopes to use in a possible new game. Speaking in an interview with Metro, Suehiro responded to a question about what he is currently working on.

"I'm also working on a story about a high school girl detective who uses the imagination (fantasising) energy from masturbating to help her solve murders. But all the publishers keep telling me 'There's no way we could put out such a perverted game!'...I wish someone would let me make it," he said.

Suehiro also revealed that the studio he works at, Access Games, is currently working on Virtual Reality "stuff." When asked about the possibility of returning to the Deadly Premonition series, he said, "Deadly Premonition is always on my mind. But I have no idea what form it'll take, when it'll appear, who I'll work on it with, or how I'll present it. The only answers are in the coffee."

Access Games' most recent release is a quirky murder-mystery game titled D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die. The game debuted on Xbox One last year and has netted more than 1.3 million downloads since its launch, although this includes the period when the game was offered as a free download for Xbox Liver subscribers. A PC version of the game will be released on June 5 via Steam, GOG, the Humble Store, and Playism.

Upon D4's release, the game was scored 7.0 by GameSpot. Reviewer Kevin VanOrd praised its ridiculous story and atmosphere, while lamenting its stereotypical characters and several slow stretches that bogged down the pace.

PS4 Ratchet & Clank Game Delayed to Spring 2016

By Emanuel Maiberg on May 14, 2015 04:18 am

The PlayStation 4 re-imagining of the original Ratchet & Clank game has been delayed to spring 2016, developer Insomniac Games has announced via post to the PlayStation Blog.

"While you might have to wait a bit longer than expected, rest assured we're using the time wisely to further polish the game to a spit-shine level, with dazzling shader response, awe-inspiring effects, velvety smooth animations, and spectacular new gameplay segments," Insomniac Games chief brand officer Ryan Schneider said. "Really, we can't wait to show it to you."

Earlier today, we learned that Ratchet & Clank animated movie was delayed to next year, and the PlayStation Blog post revealed the exact release date of April 29, 2016. The Ratchet & Clank re-imagining was always set to launch alongside the movie and expand upon its narrative, which explains why the game was delayed as well.

Insomniac said the new Ratchet & Clank will feature several new levels as well as re-imagined locations from the original game like Metropolis. It will also have new weapons and new visuals that take advantage of the PS4's hardware.

To find out more about the Ratchet & Clank movie, check out the voice cast revealed earlier today, including Paul Giamatti as Chairman Drek and John Goodman as Grimroth.

Watch 8 minutes of Overwatch's Robot Monk Character in Action

By Emanuel Maiberg on May 14, 2015 03:16 am

Blizzard has released a new gameplay video for its upcoming multiplayer shooter Overwatch, highlighting the character Zenyatta.

The Diablo III and World of Warcraft developer describes Zenyatta as an "omnic monk who wanders the world in search of spiritual enlightenment. It is said that those who cross his path are never the same again."

Zenyatta has four abilities:

  • Orb of Destruction -- Projects his destructive energy orbs either individually, or in a rapid-fire volley after a few seconds spent gathering power.
  • Orb of Harmony -- Casts an orb over the shoulder of a targeted ally. So long as Zenyatta remains alive, the orb slowly restores health to his ally. Only one ally can receive the orb's benefit at a time.
  • Orb of Discord -- Attaching the orb of discord to an opponent amplifies the amount of damage they receive for as long as Zenyatta lives.
  • Transcendence -- Zenyatta's ultimate ability. While transcendent, Zenyatta cannot use abilities or weapons, but is immune to damage and automatically restores his health and that of nearby allies.

For more details on Zenyatta check out the game's official site.

Announced during Blizzcon last year, Overwatch is a first-person shooter that bears some resemblance to Valve's Team Fortress 2. The game represents Blizzard's first new franchise in seventeen years. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous Overwatch coverage.

  • Release Date: May 7 (PC); May 12 (Xbox One/PS4); TBD (Wii U)

IMAGE GALLERY:

GameSpot -- 8/10

"Other games in the genre work like Skinner boxes, offering rewards according to a special schedule designed to keep you hooked. These games offer the fantasy of plodding, constant accumulation or low-stakes (if high-speed) action. Project Cars offers a different fantasy, one that's a little less attractive and a bit harder to enjoy: the fantasy of learning how to do something difficult." - Austin Walker [Full review]

IGN -- 8.9/10

"Deep and demanding but incredibly user-friendly, Project Cars looks great, sounds fantastic, and feels even better. The action is ferocious and tactical, the weather effects are awesome, and it's brimming with content to explore. This is real racing done right." - Luke Reilly [Full review]

Destructoid -- 7/10

"Project Cars isn't for everyone. In fact, it isn't for most people. It's niche, and it's for those who take their racing games seriously. It does most of what it sets out to do, and it does that very well. However, the broad appeal is lacking, as the long learning curve likely outweighs what most are willing to put up with. But, for those who put in the time and manage to take the checkered flag, this title has a supremely rewarding experience that most anyone can feel proud of, regardless of familiarity with cars." - Brett Makedonski [Full review]

USGamer -- 4.5/5

"Project Cars features an excellent roster of cars and tracks, and delivers some of the most exciting and visceral racing action money can buy. It's not for everyone, since driving the game can be quite tough, even with all the assists turned on, but for those who are up for a challenge, few other racing games are as involving and potentially rewarding as this." - Jaz Rignall [Full review]

Game Informer -- 8.5/10

"In a genre where it can be hard to differentiate yourself, Project Cars makes its mark. It's not as strong as it could be in all areas, but Slightly Mad Studios' attention to detail and racing chops make the game a contender." - Matthew Kato [Full review]

ArsTechnica -- No Review Score

"If the thought of having a steering wheel in your living room isn't one you'd ever entertain, Project Cars probably isn't the game for you. But if you're the kind of person who keeps their shopping cart on the racing line at grocery time, you're in for a treat." Jonathan Gitlin [Full review]

DigitalSpy -- 4/5

"OK, so it doesn't feel as extensive as the online modes found in Forza Horizon 2 and Driveclub, but Project Cars contains enough courses and racing styles that repetition should never be an issue. Project Cars is a game that requires practice, patience, and a whole lot of skill. It's not the easiest game to pick up and play, but it's definitely one of the most rewarding when you put in the time and finally nab yourself a podium finish." - Liam Martin [Full review]

Ratchet & Clank Movie Delayed, But Cast Is Surprisingly Good

By Eddie Makuch on May 14, 2015 01:05 am

[UPDATE 2] Insomniac has now confirmed that the new Ratchet & Clank game for PS4 has also been delayed to 2016. Get the full story here.

[UPDATE] We now know the roles Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, and Sylvester Stallone--among others--will play in the upcoming movie. See below. We've also confirmed that the movie is now scheduled to launch in 2016, a delay from its original 2015 release window. What we don't know, at least not yet, is if the Ratchet & Clank remake for PlayStation 4--which is supposed to launch in the first half of 2015--is also delayed.

  • Paul Giamatti -- Chairman Drek
  • John Goodman -- Grimroth
  • Bella Thorne -- Cora
  • Rosario Dawson -- Elaris
  • Sylvester Stallone -- Victor

The original story is below

The voice cast for the upcoming animated Ratchet & Clank movie has been revealed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, household names like Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, and Sylvester Stallone will star in the film, along with Rosario Dawson and Bella Thorne. Their roles have not been announced, however.

Meanwhile, Ratchet & Clank video game voice actors James Arnold Taylor (Ratchet), David Kaye (Clank), Armin Shimerman (Nefarious), and Jim Ward (Captain Qwark) will also lend their voices to the movie.

The Ratchet & Clank movie follows Ratchet and Clank as they attempt to thwart the plans of an evil alien named Chairman Drek.

"When the duo stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team a group called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy," reads a line from the movie's description.

Presumably, Giamatti, Goodman, Stallone, Dawson, and Thorne will voice The Galactic Rangers.

Directing the Ratchet & Clank movie is Kevin Munroe, who directed 2007's TMNT. The film is being developed by production companies Rainmaker Entertainment and Blockade Entertainment, alongside PlayStation and Insomniac Games.

Insomniac will have a "hands-on role" in the film's production, screenplay, character development, and animation consulting. In addition, Ratchet & Clank writer T.J. Fixman--who has written every Ratchet & Clank game--will pen the script for the film.

The movie is scheduled to hit theaters in 2016, a delay from its original 2015 release window.

In addition to the Ratchet & Clank movie, Insomniac has announced a new Ratchet & Clank game for PlayStation 4. It's a remake of the 2002 PlayStation 2 original, and will have "new visuals that rival the best PS4 games on the market."
