Hearthstone's Fourth Button Mystery Revealed: New PvP Mode Coming

By Anonymous on Jun 10, 2015 10:35 pm

The mystery of the fourth button has been revealed: Hearthstone is introducing a new mode called Tavern Brawl in the upcoming 2.7 patch.

This new player-versus-player mode consists of games played with a unique set of rules that change every week. Blizzard suggested possibilities like playing with preset decks, newly built decks that must follow certain guidelines, or with certain minion types being buffed. You'll be able to take part in these matches against random players online or against friends by challenging them from your friends list. Either way, you'll be able to play for free.

Tavern Brawl will be added in a patch "coming soon," but it won't be available for all players straight out of the gate. In order to access it, you'll first need to reach level 20 with at least one hero.

After the end of each Tavern Brawl, there will be a "couple of days" when they are unavailable as Blizzard prepares the next one.

Blizzard wasn't especially specific about when patch 2.7 will be released, but it did say the first Tavern Brawl will be here in "mid-June," meaning it could be out any day now. Once the mode arrives, you'll be able to win a free card pack each time you win your first game of the week during "the first several brawls."

This patch will also introduce the first new heroes, as recently announced. These cosmetic-only packs cost $10 each and don't change gameplay in any way. Instead, they replace the look and sound of select heroes. Additionally, with the release of the new patch, you'll be able to assign a different card back to each of your decks.

Watch PS4's Ratchet & Clank in Action, Including the Dance-Inducing Groovitron

By Anonymous on Jun 10, 2015 10:13 pm

Insomniac games today released the first gameplay footage from the upcoming reimagining of Ratchet & Clank for PS4, and it's looking quite good.

Ratchet & Clank, as it's called, is not a simple HD remake of the original game of the same name. Instead, it's using that game as a basis, and then adding new content and working in the story from the movie that debuts in April 2016. As the trailer jokingly describes it, it's "the game, based on the movie, based on the game trailer."

You can get an overview of the game (and check out some gameplay) in the video above, and see the new trailer below. We also have new videos of a boss fight and a chunk of gameplay from Aleero City.

In addition to the much-improved visuals, Ratchet & Clank will feature new planets, bosses, and weapons, as well as a modernized control scheme. These weapons consist of both brand-new weapons and some returning from the Ratchet & Clank Future games, such as the Groovitron that forces nearby characters to dance. Also making a return here is the Bouncer weapon from Going Commando, but you'll need to preorder the game in order to get your hands on that.

Following a recent delay, the new Ratchet & Clank is set to land on PS4 sometime next spring. A price has not been announced, but Amazon is listing it for just $40.

Expect to hear much more about the game as we approach E3 next week.

See World of Warcraft's Early Days With its First Ever Screenshots

By Anonymous on Jun 10, 2015 10:00 pm

It's been almost eleven years since the popular MMO World of Warcraft initially launched, but developer Blizzard was working on the game long before that. The game has evolved dramatically over the years, getting multiple fresh coats of paint.

Recruitment marketing manager Dave Wilson today posted several screenshots of the game, including the earliest existing image of it from the late 1990s. It's striking to see just how far World of Warcraft has come since Blizzard began working on it.

Here are the images from Dave Wilson's Twitter account:

Since 2004, World of Warcraft has grown to be the biggest subscription-based MMO in the world, in spite of losing almost three million subscribers since the end of 2014. It's had five expansions and undergone significant changes. Here's a screenshot of what the most recent expansion, Warlords of Draenor, looks like:

DmC Dev's Hellblade Gets New Gameplay Trailer, Details on Key Themes

By Anonymous on Jun 10, 2015 09:19 pm

Ninja Theory, developer of Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and DmC: Devil May Cry, has released a new trailer for Hellblade, its upcoming third-person action game.

Along with the trailer, which you can watch below, Ninja Theory has also discussed some of the themes at the heart of the game.

"Mental health and psychosis are the key themes explored in Hellblade," the studio said.

In order to accurately and authentically explore these themes, the studio is working closely with Paul Fletcher, University of Cambridge's professor of health and neuroscience. Ninja Theory is also consulting with people who have an experience of mental health difficulties.

"True understanding of mental health is not simply about the books, lectures, or verbal descriptions but from deeper engagement on all levels," said Fletcher.

"Working with Ninja Theory has shown me the potential that gaming has for sharing in a character's experiences and engendering empathy in ways that go well beyond those offered by simple academic descriptions. Maybe this approach will contribute powerful new ways of challenging stigma."

Tameem Antoniades, Ninja Theory's chief creative officer, added that the studio is "pursuing creative independence in order to explore a compelling subject matter and gaming experiences that would not be possible under the current retail model."

"In movie terms," he continued, "this would be a quality independent film, not a Hollywood blockbuster. Digital self-publishing means that we can offer a smaller, but high-quality game at around half the price of retail games."

Ninja Theory has also revealed that the project is supported by the Wellcome Trust, a charitable foundation aimed at improving the understanding of science and health.

Despite its similar name, Hellblade is not connected to previous PlayStation 3 exclusive Heavenly Sword.

"It's a brand-new IP. Senua is a new character," said Dominic Matthews, product development manager at the studio. "It's not tied to Heavenly Sword at all. I saw someone describe the name as someone just putting Heavenly Sword into Thesaurus.com and going 'Oh, it's Hellblade.'"

Click image to view in full screen

"It's not something where we've gone, 'Yeah, let's make people think it is this.' We really like Heavenly Sword. We loved making that game. So it's actually more just we like making female protagonists that look in a certain style. And we like swords. And we like hell. It's more that."

The studio has said Hellblade will deliver "ninja-class melee gameplay, strong character stories, and a unique art vision"--it was easy to assume this was, at the very least, a spiritual successor to Heavenly Sword. But even that isn't the case.

Sony has secured Hellblade as a timed PS4 exclusive. However, the game is also in development for PC.

Ninja Theory has also released a new developer diary, discussing the main character, Senua, and the game's approach to exploring mental health.

The Only 15 Pokemon That Matter

By Anonymous on Jun 10, 2015 03:48 am

15. Zekrom

Starting with Zekrom, a Pokemon from the Black and White era, this guy's a real (electro) shocker.

14. Meganium

Who doesn't like a dinosaur wearing a flower? Oh, you're one of those Water types? Move along then.

13. Scizor

Best Bug type ever.

12. Arcanine

A fire-breathing dog that looks like a tiger, apparently. One of Pokemon's first Fire Stone evolution types.

11. Zapdos

The highest-ranking of Pokemon Red and Blue's original trio of legendary birds, Zapdos is Woody Woodpecker mixed with Big Bird ... and some serious static electricity.

10. Diancie

A mythical rock/fairy type that premiered in last year's Pokemon the Movie: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction.

9. Snorlax

This rotund form tends to snooze through battles, but if he DOES wake up, beware of high-powered attacks. The closest the series gets to a mash-up with Studio Ghibli's Totoro!

8. Rapidash

A horse with a fire mane that evolves into a unicorn. Because, of course.

7. Pidgeot

The original Pokemon bird.

6. Celebi

One of the rarest of them all, Nintendo let players download this Psychic/Grass type for free back in 2013.

5. Charizard

Equipped with a fire tail that comes in handy as a super smasher, if not a marshmallow toaster.

4. Lucario

A fan favorite who made his debut in the fourth generation of the series. He has also been a staple of Super Smash Bros. since Brawl.

3. Bulbasaur

One of the best starter pocket monsters. Dig the leaf.

2. Mewtwo

A clone of Mew, this cutie became one of the most powerful in the first wave of the series. Look for an appearance in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

1. Pikachu

The most recognized Pokemon in the world. How could we not choose you, Pikachu!

13 Gruesome Mortal Kombat X Fatalities You'll Wish You Could Unsee

By Anonymous on Jun 10, 2015 03:46 am

1. Quan Chi

Sword swallowing's an ancient yet dangerous skill, particularly if it's forced upon you by Quan Chi.

2. Kung Lao

Kung Lao's a Shaolin Monk with a razor-brimmed hat. A deadly combo you want to stay as far away from as possible.

3. D'Vorah

D'Vorah may be an insect herself, but she squashes her opponents like bugs.

4. Johnny Cage

Here's Johnny! All work and no play make Johnny Cage a dull boy.

5. Jacqueline Briggs

We're not sure we even want to understand what's happening in this picture.

6. Ermac

Looks like someone just lost their lunch. So will everyone who plays the new Mortal Kombat.

7. Erron Black

The mysterious new gunslinger offers a face full of lead for his finishing move.

8. Ferra & Torr

Ferra & Torr are a deadly duo. If you're not careful, they'll rip you in two.

9. Kenshi

The blind swordsman Kenshi has no interest in letting his opponent's save face.

10. Kotal Kahn

Kotal Kahn's a heartbreaker in the true sense of the word.

11. Jax

Hey, put that cigar out! Maybe it's time Jax switched to vaping.

12. Mileena

Finally, someone's trumped Street Figher's Blanka for the most vicious face biting in video game history.

13. Cassie Cage

Cassie takes after her father Johnny Cage, with their shared penchant for camera mugging.

A trio of legends showed up for the Frankfurt Book Fair in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. If you look closely you can even spot Annie's bear companion Tibbers!

14. Shaco the Demon Jester

Charley Lewis has an almost friendly take on the infamous death enigma Shaco at the London Comic Con 2013. He's pretty cunning though, so we still recommend keeping your distance.

This painstakingly accurate evocation of Orianna was accomplished by Marina Shisterova, the winner of DreamHack Komplett.se Cosplay Championship at DreamHack Summer 2014. (Photo by Frederike Schmitt)

16. Jarvan IV

One of the improved gameplay features is huge battles that will involve up to 40 players. You'll feel like you're actually in the Star Wars universe!

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Almost a year ahead of the March 2016 release date, Team DC has dropped all kinds of teases and head shots to kick off the fan frenzy.

Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot (maybe you saw her in Furious 7?) will bring Wonder Woman to the big screen in the Man of Steel sequel. Whose side will she be on?

Superman returns

Of course. And Henry Cavill will reprise his role as the Man of Steel. But still, can't stop wondering...why are he and Batman battling each other?!

Lex Luthor's very calm, very evil face

Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) will play the iconic role of Lex Luthor, as seen in this sneak peek first revealed by Entertainment Weekly.

Batsuit reveal

The new suit and smaller ears have been a hot topic since the reveal of Ben Affleck's Caped Crusader outfit.

Teased Batmobile

The filmmakers let us catch a glimpse of the new Batmobile before we even got to see the new guy behind the wheel.

The Batmobile

Batman's new ride looks sleeker, faster and (a little) less militarized than Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight-era Batmobile.

Jason Momoa as Aquaman

Good news! Everybody's favorite Dothraki, Jason Momoa, will bring Aquaman out from the deep. To unite the seven, apparently.

The Most Fun Theme Park Rides of All Time

By Anonymous on Jun 10, 2015 03:21 am

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin

Also known as Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters, this attraction at Disney World and Disneyland takes place on the tiny scale of the Toy Story hero. You pilot an Omnimover space vehicle equipped with laser pistols in an arcade-style shooting gallery showdown. Dripping in neon and nostalgia, it's a love letter to Pixar fans.

Space Mountain

Chief among Tomorrowland's highlights is the venerable Space Mountain, an institution of a roller coaster. The lines are often gargantuan, but you're treated to space-age decor that only Disney can deliver. It's a ride so fun you almost don't mind the wait. Most people exit its sleek steel tubes reborn with a brighter smile and hope for the future.

Star Tours (and more!)

Disney and Star Wars have long had an amiable relationship, but now that Disney owns the franchise outright, you can expect a much larger Star Wars presence at their parks coinciding with the sequels. Until then, there's always the delightfully quaint motion simulator ride Star Tours.

Indiana Jones Adventure

You've always wanted to blast through dangerous caves on an expedition with Indy, and this ride at Disneyland finally lets you fulfill that dream. You're even treated to an iconic boulder chase. If you want to hang onto your memories, Indiana Jones artist Drew Struzan sells prints of the original ride poster featured above.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

Disneyland's sister park California Adventure offers up a Rod Serling-inspired surprise for guests willing to explore this haunted hotel. If you've got the stomach for a 13-story drop, you don't want to miss this weird and wonderful homage.

Spaceship Earth

If you're the kind of person who gets a kick out of browsing through vintage issues of Popular Mechanics, then Spaceship Earth will be your retro-future kitsch metropolis. Housed inside Epcot's trademark sphere, Spaceship Earth is a waltz down a memory lane of human technological dreams and accomplishments.

Mission: SPACE

Despite its utopian space-age vibe, Disney's Mission: Space (located in Epcot Park) puts you through a very real physical gauntlet in this astronaut training simulation. Finally you can experience the g-force of liftoff in the pit of your own stomach.

The Incredible Hulk Roller Coaster

The fabled Marvel Superheroes Theme Park has yet to open in Dubai, but Islands of Adventure in Florida has a healthy array of comic book coasters, including this one featuring The Incredible Hulk. After hurtling through its launched lift hill, your face might turn a shade of green too.

Transformers: The Ride

Frequently cited as one of the best theme park attractions in the world, Transformers: The Ride is a thrilling combo of a 3D cinematic experience and a traditional vehicle-mounted expedition. You can find it at Universal Studios Hollywood and Florida, but unfortunately, Tyrese Gibson is not included.

Jurassic Park: The Ride

The upcoming release of Jurassic World already has reignited Jurassic Park fever, and the only prescription is more dinosaurs. Get yourself over to Universal Studios Hollywood for a boat ride through a vicious velociraptor picnic.

Clarence's Coaster from True Romance

Quentin Tarantino's first screenplay remains his most charming and sincere film. If you've got a soft spot for Clarence, a fellow comic book shop geek, you'll want to catch The Viper at Six Flags Magic Mountain to recreate his infamous drug deal with Bronson Pinchot.

Batman: The Ride

Batman may hide out in a cave, but that hasn't stopped him from showing up at more than a half-dozen theme parks across the country, like this breackneck coaster ride at Six Flags Over Texas. You can even ride the whole thing backwards this year at Six Flags Over Georgia and Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey!

Battlestar Galactica: Human vs Cyborg

If you're willing to travel, you can find decent geek-culture-inspired rides overseas, like this Battlestar Galactica set of dueling roller coasters at Universal Studios Singapore. Because of intentional near-misses that are mere inches apart, the ride has been under an extended safety review. But if you're brave enough to hack it, it's scheduled to reopen this year.

Back to the Future: The Ride

It used to be a staple at Universal Studios in Hollywood and Florida, but now that those attractions have shut down, Universal Studios Japan is the only place to find this Delorean simulator that hurtles you back through time to the prehistoric age. Great Scott!

Ace Attorney Investigations

Diligent travelers can find a special treat hiding on the third floor of Sega's Tokyo amusement park, Joypolis. A life-size Miles Edgeworth from Phoenix Wright fame invites guests to investigate clues strewn about a crime scene. Expect cameos by fan favorites across the classic adventure series.
