What's New And Leaving Hulu In June 2017

By Anonymous on May 17, 2017 11:51 pm

We're getting an early look at what's coming and going on Hulu next month, and it looks like subscribers will get the chance to take in some classic films from the '70s, '80s, and '90s, as well as catch up on a few Hollywood blockbusters.

Of course, if you're looking for some comic relief, look no further than Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, along with Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde. Both movies hit Hulu at the start of the month too.

On the TV front, the third season of Black-ish and the seventh season of Rizzoli & Isles will start streaming, along with new episodes of American Ninja Warrior and Hollywood Game Night as they premiere.

If you're hoping to catch Gladiator, Footloose, or Air Bud, this is your last chance on Hulu. They'll stop being available on June 30, along with a handful of others in our list below.

WWE Backlash Match Card And Predictions

By Anonymous on May 17, 2017 11:39 pm

On Sunday, May 21, the Smackdown brand-exclusive event Backlash is coming to the Allstate Arena in Chicago, IL. The event will have almost all of the show's titles on the line, and it will be the in-ring debut of Shinsuke Nakamura. We think we have a good idea for who is going to win, so here is the full card and our predictions for each match

Tye Dillinger vs. Aiden English (Kickoff Match)

Tye Dillinger has already beaten Aiden English twice now, and at Backlash, English will have one more chance to best "The Perfect 10." This is English's first solo storyline now that his former tag partner, Simon Gotch, left the company. We're getting to see a pre-Vaudevillains English from his early NXT days. However, he's still not back to singing his own entrance music.

Seeing as Dillinger has already beaten English twice already, it's a bit of a head scratcher to see this match happen for a third time. Dillinger is already over, as you can hear the "10" chants at every WWE event, and English is reestablishing his early NXT character. Because of this, we think that English is going to come out on top, as he's been squashed in way too many matches during the past year.

Prediction: Aiden English wins.

Sami Zayn vs. Baron Corbin

Two mid-carders working their way up the ladder, Sami Zayn and Baron Corbin, have found themselves in a little bit of a feud. The two have been attacking each other during segments and matches, and now, they'll be fighting each other at Backlash.

From what it seems, this is the year that Corbin will get a bigger push. This is a tad problematic since both of these stars are over with fans. However, since Zayn is usually pushed as the ultimate underdog, we're giving the win to Corbin--who seems like he's on his way to main event status a lot quicker. The hope is that this rivalry will continue, with Zayn eventually coming out on top at the next PPV.

Prediction: Baron Corbin wins

Luke Harper vs. Erick Rowen

In a hastily put together match, the two former members of the Wyatt Family, Luke Harper and Erick Rowen, will square off at Backlash. WWE has been pushing this rivalry, but it just doesn't feel like it's working yet, even though it has an incredible amount of potential. Hopefully, the PPV will give this story some legs.

Luke Harper has been on a roll as of late, especially with his involvement in the Randy Orton/Bray Wyatt story. We're thinking this match will be a bigger push for him, but at the same time, it should push the Harper/Rowen story further. Because of that, Harper will win but only because Rowen will get disqualified.

Prediction: Luke Harper wins by DQ

Naomi, Charlotte Flair, & Becky Lynch vs. Natalya, Carmella, & Tamina

The faces take on the heels in this six-woman tag match, utilizing the entire female roster. Natalya, Carmella, and Tamina--now going by the name "The Welcoming Committee"--have assumed a dominant role in the women's division with a "you're either with us or against us" attitude. They'll be taking on the heroes of the division: Becky Lynch, Charlotte, and Smackdown Women's Champion Naomi.

It's a huge bummer to see the entire women's roster be thrown into one match for the PPV. Personally, a couple of singles matches would help fill out the PPV a bit better, and this match doesn't showcase any single talent. We think to unify the team a bit more and establish them as a fearsome force, the win will go to the Welcoming Committee. In addition, this may be where Charlotte turns on her partners, to join the villains.

Prediction: The Welcoming Committee wins dirty, with the help of Charlotte

The Usos (c) vs. Breezango

(For the Smackdown Tag Team Championships)

In one of the biggest shockers of the year, Breezango became the No. 1 contenders for the Smackdown Tag Team Championships. Very quickly, because of their backstage antics, they are now one of the most entertaining parts of the show. Now, they'll take on the Usos, who are also in the middle of a resurgence with a fantastic new gimmick.

These two teams have quickly become the best in their division, especially when the Usos turned heel/paranoid conspiracy theorists. Maybe it's the Breezango fanatic talking, but the win will go to the fashion police, in hopes this rivalry continues, which should help revitalize Smackdown's tag team division.

Prediction: Breezango wins

Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Dolph Ziggler

Shinsuke Nakamura has finally made his way to Smackdown. However, since his first appearance, he hasn't had an actual match. This has upset veteran Dolph Ziggler, and the two will battle it out at Backlash.

This match is going to be a barn-burner, with both men having a record of putting on some great matches. Considering how much time and effort WWE has spent building up Nakamura, it seems insane to give the win to Ziggler here, unless he does something dastardly. All-in-all, we're giving the win to Nakamura.

Prediction: Shinsuke Nakamura wins

Kevin Owens (c) vs. AJ Styles

(For the United States Championship)

"The New Face of America," Kevin Owens, is now on Smackdown and already making enemies with well-established stars. He'll be taking on one of the show's premiere athletes, AJ Styles. Just like Ziggler/Nakamura, this match has the potential to be a barn-burner as well.

Owens was already an established star on Raw. Now, he just needs to prove his worth on the Tuesday night show. The only way for him to do that is get the win at Backlash. We're thinking he's going to get the win dirty, but one thing is for sure: this has the potential to be match of the night.

Prediction: Kevin Owens wins dirty

Randy Orton (c) vs. Jinder Mahal

(For the WWE Championship)

Jinder Mahal came over to Smackdown and was very quickly thrust into the WWE Championship picture. While this seemed out of nowhere and ridiculous, it quickly got over with many fans, especially with the addition of the Singh brothers as his henchmen.

This storyline has been a lot of fun, especially when Mahal did a photoshoot while holding the championship belt, and his character went from mid-carder to main event status quickly. It also made many people realize that Orton is as an uninteresting champion when compared to those who came before him. In order for Smackdown to keep beating Raw in the ratings, Mahal has to win.

Prediction: Jinder Mahal wins after interference from the Singh brothers.

F1 2017 Announced For PS4, Xbox One, and PC; Watch The First Trailer

By Anonymous on May 17, 2017 11:30 pm

This year's entry in F1 racing game series has been announced, as has a release date and the first details.

Again developed by Codemasters, F1 2017 is headed to PS4, Xbox One, and PC (through Steam) on August 25, 2017. Alongside the news, publisher Deep Silver shared the game's first trailer, which you can watch below. It unfortunately doesn't include any actual racing, but you can get a look at a handful of F1 cars.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3

Codemasters and Deep Silver state that F1 2017 brings back classic F1 cars. As seen in the trailer, those include the 1988 McLaren MP4/4, 1992 Williams FW14B, and the 2002 Ferrari F2002. These won't be the only classic cars featured; there will be a total of 12, with more to be announced in the "coming weeks."

F1 2017 also expands Career mode, enhances multiplayer, and adds a new Championships mode (which was not explained in any detail).

"For the first time ever, F1 2017 fully integrates the classic experience into the main career mode," Codemasters creative director Lee Mather said in a press release. "As part of your career, you will be invited to race in modern day, invitational events in the different classic F1 cars throughout the season. We're also adding to the variety in F1 2017 with the inclusion of four alternative circuit layouts, as well as numerous new gameplay types. The classic cars will also be available to play in a range of other game modes, including online multiplayer modes and time trial."

Anyone who preorders F1 2017 (or picks up a Day One edition) will get exclusive access to the aforementioned McLaren MP4/4. The car will also be sold "at a later date" for an unspecified price, while the remaining classic cars will be available to all players.

The Surge Review

By Anonymous on May 17, 2017 11:30 pm

Curt and dismissive as it may sound, The Surge is a Dark Souls clone to the core, but it's also the best kind--one that uses From Software's tried-and-true foundation as a launch pad for new ideas. Not everything hits, but The Surge works far more often than it doesn't, and what it does change is mostly better executed here than in its forebears. Deck 13 has crafted a satisfying adventure that breathes new life into a flooded sub-genre.

The Surge's story is about as unnerving as they come. The world's fallen to pieces, in part because mega-corporations have failed as stewards of the earth. Not to worry, though, as they also offer the cure. You play as Warren, a paraplegic looking for work with CREO--a medical device company. In the opening moments, you register for implants that could cure you, but will require you to work for CREO using a snazzy new exoskeleton. It gives you boosted strength and speed, and of course helps you walk again, but as payment CREO more or less takes your soul. But it gets darker.

As soon as you start up the procedure, you're chemically paralyzed, but not anesthetized. As machines hack and drill into your flesh and bone, you feel every excruciating second--haunting screams bellow out of the speakers as you watch bots cut into Warren. Then, you're dumped out into the wasteland just outside the facility, discarded as a failure. Now, you fight to survive, because what else is there to do?

Surge doesn't really do much with its story that hasn't been tread a thousand times in everything from Soylent Green to Deus Ex; Big companies are bad and we probably shouldn't let them muck with our biology. What it does do well is pace the game out and establish a sinister tone. While Souls-based games tend towards more Lovecraftian themes, Surge goes all-in and blends the fear of technology run amok with body horror in some inventive ways. Plus, it's less about tackling massive beasts and ruling powers of the world and more just trying to survive one helluva bad day. Thematically, that puts it closer to Dead Space, and that lends itself to an even slower, more intentional pace than its inspirations.

By and large you'll be squaring off against other discarded folks like yourself, and their suits just don't work quite right. Arms will twitch, and they'll lumber and lunge all over--it's stark and eerie. Plus, that aesthetic foundation dovetails into excellent addendums to the core Souls formula. The game is hard, you lose your stuff when you die and you have to go get it back--none of that has changed--but combat has a very different pacing to it. Blocking is much rarer, and instead of slashing at foes when you have an opening, you now have to pick out weak points on their body.

Most enemies will have some form of armor or protection, meaning that you'll first need to lock-on, and then hack away to create openings. A much greater emphasis has been placed on interrupting enemy attacks by targeting weak points. Slicing an unarmored leg will stagger enemies and interrupt their assault--the best defense here is a hawkish offense.

You're not nimble, and without a shield or too many other means of avoiding damage, you're encouraged not to just find openings to attack, but to create the specific openings you need. You might need to club someone's leg to bring them down, but if they move just so, it'll be hard to get close. The puzzle then becomes maneuvering so that you can strike effectively. This has the added bonus, of course, of making most encounters feel distinct. You'll see the same animations and movement patterns over and over again, but different weak points and different weapons add enough variety to keep Surge from feeling too repetitive.

Not all is well, though. While Surge definitely impresses with its creative melding of tone and play, it does lead to a lot of awkward controls. Souls games are convoluted enough, with a button for just about everything. But the need to target different body parts and weaknesses here, as well as the practical requirement of locking on, means that you'll occasionally die while trying to fiddle with the targeting reticle. Even with plenty of play-time, it's tough to get used to. And it doesn't stop there.

Jumping always has to be done from a run, and there's just enough platforming throughout to make this awkward process a nuisance. Imagine being on a ledge with no guard rails, and having to leap to a higher platform from a running start. Often enough you'll start running and fall right off. Warren has a momentum to him that keeps his controls always feeling a bit loose. That's fine for most, and in step with the rest of the subgenre--especially since it elevates the intentionality of action--but when that bit bumps up against some of Surge's other changes, it's clumsy to say the least.

But, there's a host of other features and additions that keep Surge exciting enough that it's worth it to push on in spite of those frustrations. For example, implants and other add-ons slot into your exo suit and add a host of new abilities and techniques. You use most of them by building up energy with a series of successive hits, before pulling off a flashy finisher. It's simple enough, but when mixed with the targeting system and general flow of combat keeps the game feeling brisk and aggressive--despite its clunky movement.

Surge is far from perfect, but none of its problems are deal breakers. They're minor bumps that come from an otherwise inventive, exciting new entry in a packed sub-genre. It bucks the trend towards creative bankruptcy, adopting some fresh ideas and layering those together with aesthetics, tone, and play to create an inspired adventure.

Intriguing MMO Ashes Of Creation Has Already Raised $2 Million

By Anonymous on May 17, 2017 11:17 pm

The world-building MMORPG Ashes of Creation debuted on Kickstarter earlier this month with an initial goal of $750,000. Despite being only halfway through its crowdfunding campaign, the project has managed to raise over $2 million so far, more than twice the amount of its original goal.

Developed by Intrepid Studios, an independent studio comprised of developers who've worked on EverQuest II and XCOM: Enemy Within (among other titles), Ashes of Creation is described as "an open-world, non-faction MMORPG set in a high-fantasy world." Like other MMOs, the game features player-versus-player and player-versus-environment elements, as well as group and solo quests along with larger scale "sieges."

What sets Ashes of Creation apart from other MMOs, however, is its world-building aspects. Players have a direct impact on how the world around them evolves thanks to the game's unique Node System. Different portions of the world have their own Node, which responds to your actions and influences how that part of the world changes. As your character levels up, civilization advances accordingly, which in turn affects the course of the story. You can learn more about the game's world-building aspects in the video below.

So far, the Ashes of Creation Kickstarter has hit more than half of the campaign's stretch goals, among them the addition of group mounts as well as expansive underground areas called the Underrealm. The remaining stretch goals will add another race for your avatar and new financial systems.

Ashes of Creation is due out by December 2018. The game is in development for PC and will require a subscription to play, though Intrepid hasn't yet detailed subscription costs. Alpha and beta tests will begin for Kickstarter backers in 2018.

Chaotic GTA 2 Inspired Co-op Shooter Geneshift Launches Next Week On PC

By Anonymous on May 17, 2017 10:34 pm

For all the that games that try to capture the feel of the massive third-person open worlds of Grand Theft Auto IV and V these days, it's sometimes nice to see a game take inspiration from the older GTA installments. One such title, called Geneshift, is a shooter clearly reminiscent of GTA 2, and it's launching next week in early access.

In a press release, Nik Nak Studios announced that Geneshift will come to PC through Steam on May 23 after eight years in development. It's a top-down shooter that has a similar sort of over-the-top action as GTA 2. However, it also has multiplayer: Geneshift features both four-player co-op in its campaign and five-on-five competitive modes. You can check out a gameplay trailer below.

Geneshift looks pretty cool and appropriately wild. Co-op support seems like a great addition, and I'm particularly fond of the scene in the trailer where four players roll around on a flatbed truck.

Geneshift will cost $8 during the first week post-release. After that, it'll run you $10. You can currently check out a demo of the game, which gives free access to the multiplayer modes without time restrictions.

In other GTA news, GTA V itself recently added a classic mode that brings back the top-down perspective. You can read more about that here.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole Release Date Confirmed, Again

By Anonymous on May 17, 2017 09:42 pm

Ubisoft has confirmed South Park: The Fractured But Whole will be available from October 17 across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. To coincide with the release date announcement, a new trailer focused on The Farting Vigilante has also been released. Check it out below.

"With crime on the rise in South Park, the streets have never been more dangerous," Ubisoft said in a press release. "As the sun sets on the quiet Colorado town, havoc and chaos unleash a reign of terror and the seedy underbelly of the city comes alive. The town needs new heroes to rise! Eric Cartman seizes the opportunity to save the town and create the best superhero franchise ever, his own Coon & Friends with himself as the leader, The Coon.

"Every superhero has an origin, and Coon & Friends are no different. Continuing in their role as the New Kid, players will discover their backstory, assemble their unique costumes, and harness their fart-based powers from numerous hero classes to create their own original hero. An all-new combat system offers unique opportunities to master space and time while on the battlefield, and a revamped looting and crafting system gives players the freedom to craft their own equipment to aid them in battle."

The game, which was written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, was originally set to come out in December 2016, but in September of that year it was delayed to 2017. At the time Ubisoft said this was to "make sure the game experience meets the high expectations of fans." The game was moved to Q1 2017 (January-March, 2017), but suffered another delay.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole is being developed internally at Ubisoft San Francisco. The previous game in the series, 2013's South Park: The Stick of Truth, was made by Fallout: New Vegas studio Obsidian Entertainment.

Those that preorder the game will get an "exclusive in-game assistant, Towelie: Your Gaming Bud," who provides "helpful and hilarious advice and commentary to players at key locations throughout the game."

The Fractured But Whole is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Although there was a suggestion it could also be released for Switch, a representative for the South Park studio dispelled this rumor.

During a recent earnings call Ubisoft announced Far Cry 5, The Crew 2, and the new Assassin's Creed will be out during the current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2018.

Square Enix announced today that players will be able to check out Star Ocean: Till the End of Time on PS4 on May 23.

Till the End of Time is the third main installment in the popular Star Ocean series, and it originally launched back in February 2003 for PS2. It launched on PS4 in Japan back in March, and you can see the Japanese launch trailer below.

The PS4 port will include trophies, PS4 Share functionality, and Remote Play support. According to a press release from publisher Square Enix, Till the End of Time will cost you $21--making it one of the more expensive PS2-on-PS4 games released so far.

The most recent installment in the Star Ocean series is Integrity and Faithlessness, which launched last year on PS4 to lukewarm reception.

New Quake Champions 1v1 Mode Shown Off With New Trailer

By Anonymous on May 17, 2017 08:32 pm

Quake Champions' big technical test is now live to all players on PC, and today publisher Bethesda showed off one of the new modes that's now playable in the game.

Called Duel Mode, it's essentially a modified one-on-one deathmatch that takes inspiration from fighting games. Players will each draft three Champions before the match starts; once it begins, they must eliminate all of the other's Champions to win a round. When a player is killed in a round, they come back to life as one of their remaining Champions. Then, winner of two out of three rounds wins the match.

You can check out a trailer for the new mode above.

Announced last summer, Quake Champions is a class-based take on the old Quake formula. It's only planned for PC at the moment, but developer id Software has said that a console release isn't out of the question. It's coming sometime in 2017, and it'll be a free-to-play game.

Quake's tech test runs until May 21 and is open to anyone on PC; you can get a key for the test at Quake's website. We spent some time with the game back in March and thought it looked promising.
