Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford invested $10 million of his own money into Aliens: Colonial Marines and lost it all. Pitchford revealed the figure today as part of a heated Twitter debate. He defended Colonial Marines and said the claims made in the game's high-profile lawsuit were "hurtful and unhelpful."
First, some background.
Following the release of Colonial Marines in February 2013, sources told GameSpot that publisher Sega was concerned that Gearbox was not investing enough effort into the game. Later, complaints were filed that claimed trailers for the game published pre-launch were misrepresentative of the final game.
In May 2015, the next chapter of the case unfolded when Gearbox was dropped from the lawsuit, something it had been trying to achieve for a year. The case against Gearbox was dismissed with prejudice under the condition that Gearbox wouldn't seek legal fees. The case could still proceed in court, however, but not as a class-action lawsuit, a judge ruled at the time.
Now, Pitchford has shed new light on the development of Colonial Marines and the nature of Gearbox's relationship with Sega. Among other things, he says the game needed to sell 3 million copies to break even, but it ended up only shipping 1.3 million, meaning it was a "commercial failure."
Check out more of Pitchford's thoughts on Colonial Marines through the tweets below. You can also visit his Twitter page to see everything he had to say--and there is lots.

Ubisoft Toronto, developer of Splinter Cell: Blacklist, is working on an all new game property, according to a job listing found on the company's careers page.
The job listing was posted on Twitter by Heather Holmes, who is team lead talent specialist at the studio.
"New senior game designer with 3Cs [character, controls, camera] expertise on a new IP here at Ubisoft Toronoto. Must have AAA game experience," reads her tweet.
The job listing doesn't provide much insight into what the project may be, only that the successful candidate will "be responsible for developing game systems, controls and interfaces (as well as the other interactive elements of his/her project) in order to bring the vision of the Producer into a playable experience."
After shipping Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Ubisoft Toronto collaborated with the Montreal studio to work on Assassin's Creed Unity and Far Cry 4.
Raymond and Motive will "work in close quarters with the BioWare team," suggesting the studio may have some hand in developing Mass Effect: Andromeda. It will also be incubating "entirely new IP and taking on some amazing projects."
The studio's first project is working on the Star Wars game from former Uncharted writer Amy Hennig, which is also being developed by Dead Space studio Visceral.
The game runs at 1080p/60fps, but how is it holding up with critics? To help you decide if it's worth a purchase, we've rounded up some editor opinions and review scores below.
"60 frames per second and 1080p resolution aren't game-changers for Kratos' adventure, though they are certainly nice attributes to have; God of War III Remastered is simply another chance to admire a game that we admired five years ago. At a $40 retail price, however, it doesn't make a strong enough argument for buying a game you've already bought, particularly when the lower-resolution pre-rendered cutscenes stand out all the more next to the in-game visuals." - Kevin VanOrd [Full review]
IGN -- 8.8/10
"God of War III was an impressive feat for its day, and it still impresses today in God of War III Remastered. Its beautiful graphics are prettier than ever, and a higher frame rate adds more fluidity to the action. The story will be confusing to newcomers, as it picks up right in the middle of the saga, but the exciting combat and epic set pieces hold up exceptionally well." - Meghan Sullivan [Full review]
Game Informer -- 9/10
"If you were planning on playing (or replaying) God of War III regardless, you can't go wrong with this version. It's the same game that earned so much acclaim five years ago. With that being said, God of War III Remastered does nothing to entice old players to return; apart from photo mode, you won't find any new options or tweaks to inject novelty into the adventure. You even need to beat the game before you can use the handful of included DLC costumes. God of War III is still a fantastic experience, and a significant beat in gaming history, but this remaster doesn't build on its legacy." - Joe Juba [Full review]
Hardcore Gamer -- 4/5
"God of War III has aged surprisingly gracefully. Although it's over five years old, somebody inexperienced with the series could easily mistake Remastered for an original PS4 game. In that sense, the release is a resounding success." - Steve Hannley [Full review]
PlayStation Universe -- 9/10
"As far as Remasters go God of War III is a welcome but an unnecessary one. The single addition of the Photo Mode and updated graphics are something I feel just aren't worth paying $40 for a five year old game." - Garri Bagdasarov [Full review]
Shacknews -- 7/10
"While God of War III Remastered may scratch the nostalgia itch we all have for Kratos-related mayhem, it doesn't offer anything more than a good-looking trip down memory lane. If you have yet to play the original God of War III, this would be a great opportunity to do so, but those who don't want to have their memories tarnished due to a lack of bonus material may want to steer clear of God of War III Remastered." - Daniel Perez [Full review]
[Update] An official trailer has emerged indicating the Prototype Biohazard Bundle is out now on PS4, too. Activision have revealed the bundle will include "full HD visuals", as well as an improved frame rate and increased texture resolution. Finally, the publisher announced that Prototype and Prototype 2 will come to current gen individually on August 11 in North America.
You can check out the trailer below.
The original story is below.
A bundle which includes action games Prototype and Prototype 2 is now available for purchase on the Xbox One, Microsoft announced today. Called the Prototype Biohazard Bundle, the announcement was detailed on the Major Nelson site.
The bundle is priced at $49.99 on the US Xbox Store and includes downloadable content. Together the games are approximately a 17GB download. Prototype was first released in 2009 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and follows the story of Alex Mercer, a man who possesses shape-shifting abilities and has lost his memory. The game was well-received in GameSpot's review, scoring eight-and-a-half out of ten. Reviewer Justin Calvert praised Prototype for its intriguing protagonist and storyline, as well as its ability to be challenging without becoming frustrating.
A sequel, Prototype 2, was released in 2012 and carries on from the story of its predecessor through the eyes of a new character. The game was positively received in GameSpot's review, although it was criticized for not bringing anything particularly new or inventive to the series. Developer Radical Entertainment has since been downsized, with remaining staff allocated to various Activision Publishing sectors.
Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic adventure game The Last of Us was celebrated by critics upon its release in June 2013 for PlayStation 3. But some at developer Naughty Dog didn't think the studio had a hit on its hands until the game's development was wrapping up, key designers reveal as part of a new interview.
"Quite the opposite," co-director Bruce Straley says in the latest Conversations With Creators video when asked if Naughty Dog anticipated the game's huge success. "We thought it was going to tank."
Not only that, but Straley said he worried that if The Last of Us was poorly received, it would sully the name of Naughty Dog itself.
"We thought we were going to ruin the name and image [of Naughty Dog] that's been so heartily built for years with blood, sweat, and tears," he explained. "We thought we were ruining Naughty Dog's image."
Neil Druckmann, the other director for The Last of Us, added, "The joke we would say throughout production was that 'This game is the downfall of Naughty Dog.'"
So what was wrong with The Last of Us? Lead designer Anthony Newman explains that some of the issues had to do with game mechanics. These problems were eventually overcome due to some "lucky breaks."
"A big part of it was on the mechanical side; I thought, 'We'll be lucky to scrape by with an 85 Metacritic.' Just because it wasn't gelling," Newman said. "It wasn't coming together. So it was really a a set of really lucky breaks in terms of gameplay decisions we made that really made everything fall into place and turned it into a fun game."
Not until the point when development on The Last of Us was wrapping up did Naughty Dog feel it had something special on its hands. Druckmann said he began to feel more positive about the game's outlook when people from outside of the studio played it and were blown away by the story and writing.
Part of the reason why The Last of Us' story resonates so strongly is because it carries a powerful, universal theme. "The most intense love you can have is between a parent and a child," Druckmann said about the Joel and Ellie relationship.

Alongside the release of Batman: Arkham Knight's first story expansion today, Warner Bros. has announced the add-on content coming to the action game in August. The publisher also confirmed that this content, and the rest of the game's expansions, will be developed by the game's main team, Rocksteady Studios.
Arkham Knight's August DLC, which will launch first for season pass owners, includes:
1989 Movie Batmobile Pack -- Comes with Batman and Batmobile skins based on Tim Burton's 1989 Batman movie. Also included are two Batmobile tracks "inspired by the film's sequel."
The Bat-Family Skins Pack -- Comes with six character skins based on alternate timelines: 1990s Catwoman, One Year Later Robin, Arkham Origins Batman, Iconic Grey & Black Batman, 1970s Batman, and the Original Arkham Nightwing.
Warner Bros. did not announce release dates for either expansion, nor did the company say how much they will cost individually. We'll have that information for you as soon as it becomes available.
Held at California's Anaheim Convention Center on August 14-16, the official Disney fan club's expo will include an on-stage presentation of the two games, as well as Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition. The show will apparently feature "never-before-seen" gameplay and trailers, including an "in-depth" look at Battlefront and "special surprises" regarding Kingdom Hearts III.
The trio of games will also be shown, along with more Disney titles like Frozen Free Fall and LINE: Disney Tsum Tsum, on the show floor, where guests will be able to get hands-on demos.
It is heavily implied on the D23 website that Star Wars Battlefront will be playable, with a news post saying guests can go "hands on with Star Wars." Battlefront is not the only Star Wars game present at the show though, with mobile title Star Wars: Commander and Bandai Namco's arcade dogfighting sim Star Wars: Battle Pod also appearing. However Battlefront was playable at E3, and will be playable at Gamescom, suggesting hands on demos could be available at D23 Expo.
Disney Infinity also appears to have a large presence at the show, with an augmented reality "virtual Toy Box" experience, based on the Disney Infinity game mode, as well as three new toy sets to try out: Star Wars Twilight of the Republic, Star Wars Rise Against the Empire, and Pixar's Inside Out.
Ticket prices stand at $74 for adult, non-D23 members for one-day admission, with members and children getting discounts. For more information, take a look at the D23 website.
Some of the just-announced tracks include Disturbed's "Down With the Sickness," "Now" from Paramore, and "Coming of Age" by Foster the People. You can see all ten of the new songs below.
Activision made the announcement of the ten tracks through GameStop. The retailer also announced today that everyone who preorders the game with them will receive a free 30-day Pandora One premium trial membership. This also applies to people who already preordered.
Guitar Hero Live is not backwards compatible with existing instruments. A package that comes with the game and one guitar will cost $100. You can also buy a bundle featuring the game and two guitars for $150.
Upcoming PlayStation 4 and PC space-adventure game No Man's Sky is one of the most hyped upcoming video games currently in development. Following a positive showing at E3 and with its release scheduled for later this year, that hype continues to grow still.
Now, in a new interview, Hello Games creative director Sean Murray has tackled that subject head on. He also discusses why Hello Games has refused every offer made so far for extra money to expand the scope of the game. He started off by saying Hello Games faces something of an uphill battle with No Man's Sky.
"People say to me: there's never been a game that's had this much hype and hasn't disappointed everyone," Murray told The Guardian.
It's not hard to see why No Man's Sky has so much hype. Hello Games is pushing it as a procedurally generated space exploration game where you can go anywhere and do anything in a truly massive world. Basically, it's difficult to not get excited about a game with such bold ambition.
Murray goes on to say that Hello Games is working hard to ensure that every piece of No Man's Sky footage it shows is an authentic representation of what players can expect. Over-promising and under-delivering is something Hello Games wants to avoid.
"We've always ensured that every video and demo we put out is raw gameplay," Murray said. "Every time you see No Man's Sky, it's literally me playing... It's the most genuine way in which we can show the game."
But of course, some gamers have gotten carried away. Murray said he can't do anything about this.
"They project their own idea of the game onto what we're doing," he said. "Maybe that is the nature of hype: runaway excitement that can never be matched?"
Also in the interview, Murray reveals that Hello Games was approached by a number of companies--including publishing partner Sony--who offered up extra funding to expand the scope of the game. But Murray has turned down every request--and he explained why.
"A lot of other companies would have taken the interest, taken loads of investment, grown the team massively and so on," Murray said. "And of course, we did talk about things like that. But it felt like it wouldn't work. We had an idea for a game and we may never be able to deliver on the hype. But we can deliver the game we set out to make. That has to be enough."
The full Guardian interview offers an incredibly fascinating, in-depth look at No Man's Sky and the team behind it.
Looking to continue the Batman: Arkham Knight story? You can do just that today, as Warner Bros. on Tuesday released the action game's first story-themed expansion, called A Matter of Family.
As announced previously, A Matter of Family takes place before the events of Arkham Knight, and lets you play as Batgirl. You'll fight alongside Robin in the prequel content, which takes place at an amusement park.
Here's how Warner Bros. sets up the story.
"When The Joker kidnaps Commissioner Gordon and holds him hostage at the Seagate Amusement Park, Batgirl and Robin must fight against the odds to save him and avoid falling victim to The Joker's sinister plan. Trained by Batman, Batgirl's combat combines with unparalleled hacking abilities to take down enemies, manipulate the environment and solve puzzles."
The DLC was developed by Batman: Arkham Origins studio WB Games Montreal, not Rocksteady Studios, which created the main game. However, Warner Bros. notes that WB Games Montreal built the expansion using the same engine that powers Arkham Knight.
A Matter of Family will be followed by even more add-on content, including extra missions, maps, skins, and more, all of which will be developed by Rocksteady Studios. Overall, Warner Bros. plans to support Arkham Knight with more DLC through the end of the year.
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End creative director Neil Druckmann has spoken out to explain how the power of the PlayStation 4 is doing a service to Naughty Dog's upcoming action-adventure game. Speaking with GamesRadar, Druckmann explained that some of the game's scenes in which Drake drives a jeep, including the demo we saw at E3 (see the video below), might not have been possible on PlayStation 3.
"Because of the PS4, we do not have the constraints with memory that we had in the past," he said. "So in the set piece, normally, we'd be going down one road [now] you can see the road branches and splits up. There's a ton exploration in this game."
The PS4's power has also brought a new level of visual fidelity to the Uncharted series. Naughty Dog said previously that it was aiming for a "filmic, cinematic" look for Uncharted 4. The game's new Drake character model is so detailed that you can see sweat on his forehead, as well as stubble and even chest hair.
Also in the interview, co-director Bruce Straley said what we saw from Uncharted 4 at E3 was just a taste of what's to come in terms of missions where you get to drive the jeep. You'll get to drive it in "much larger areas," he teased. But overall for Uncharted 4, you won't be able to drive the jeep whenever you want.
"We're going wide when we want to [and] we're going to narrow it down when the story calls for it. It's all about pacing," Straley explained.
UK Grime rapper Jamie Adenuga, better known asJME, is on the hunt for a shiny Charizard Pokemon card and is offering to trade a copy of his new album, Integrity>, on vinyl for one.

SWAPS! LETS DO SWAPS! Anyone who wants to swap me, holla. I'll give you a Integrity> Vinyl LP! I want a shiny Charizard In good condition.
Those that produced anything other than a good condition shiny Charizard were sent packing. To paraphrase one of his most popular tracks "Salamence? Man don't care about all that. Deoxys? Man don't care about all that. Empoleon? Man don't care about all that."
"What about [Nintetails]? Man don't care about all that. Muk? Man don't care about all that. Wigglytuff? Man don't care about all that. Pinsir? MAN DON'T CARE ABOUT ALL THAT."

Konami has removed all mention of Hideo Kojima and his studio, Kojima Productions, from Metal Gear Solid V's box art.
New, and seemingly final, versions of the box art carry no mention of Kojima, where placeholder assets had previously showed the Kojima Productions logo and the line "A Hideo Kojima Game."
The news comes just days after Otsuka Akio, the Japanese voice actor for Metal Gear Solid's protagonist Snake, claimed the development studio no longer exists. "[Kojima Productions] has been disbanded," he said. "It appears that the work that the team has been putting their utmost effort into is nearly complete." Konami has yet to respond to the speculation.
Konami also wiped Kojima branding from official artwork and marketing material for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain, as well as from Twitter and the publisher's LA office listing. But, until now, The Phantom Pain's box art had remained untouched.
A source close to Kojima Productions told GameSpot in March that Kojima is expected to leave the studio following the completion of The Phantom Pain. It is understood that the team's contracts run until December.
Whereas previous Five Nights at Freddy's games were set in a fictional pizza parlor, the new game brings the horror home. Besides the change in setting, it looks like The Final Chapter will keep the franchise's formula intact. Take a look at the trailer below for a closer look at how the game is shaping up.
The Final Chapter, which sounds like the last game in the series given its name, launches in August. Cawthon previously planned to launch the game on Halloween, but recently decided to move its release date up two months. That said, Cawthon is planning some special surprises for October 31.
Five Nights at Freddy 4 will be the fourth in the series to launch in the span of a year.
Five Nights at Freddy's 3 is the most recent entry in the series and was released in March this year. The original Five Nights at Freddy's was well-received in GameSpot's review, praised for its dark humor, ability to invoke "heart-pounding terror," and story delivery.
A film adaptation of the game is also in the works with Roy Lee (The Departed, The LEGO Movie) and Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg of KatzSmith Productions (the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel) signed on as producers.
Following its launch as a virtual reality app last week, Legendary Pictures has now released a YouTube version of an amazing 360-degree video that lets you fly over Azeroth on the back of mythic gryphon.
It's of course meant to promote Legendary's upcoming fantasy movie Warcraft, based on the Blizzard Entertainment's juggernaut gaming franchise. Specifically, the city you're flying over is Stormwind.
The new YouTube version supports YouTube 360 (on Chrome only), allowing you to use the directional tools to look in any direction you want. Be sure to do that as the video unfolds for the biggest impact.
Star Wars studio Industrial Light & Magic, which is providing the effects shots for Warcraft, developed the Azeroth video through its xLAB division.
Japan-based music label Brave Wave is set to launch a new series of video game soundtrack remasters and re-releases. It's first project is Capcom's Street Fighter 2, which will be available on disc and vinyl this year.
With its 'Generation Series', Brave Wave aims to deliver the "definitive editions of legendary video game soundtracks."
"Some of [the soundtracks are] previously unreleased, incomplete, out of print, hard to find, or not preserved in the best possible quality," it explained. "For the first time ever, we are releasing your favorite soundtracks in comprehensive collector's editions: restored, remastered, often in unprecedented quality."
The Street Fighter 2 soundtrack will include new remasters of both the CPS-1 and CPS-2 arcade system board versions of the soundtrack. The content will be "extracted directly from the arcade boards and approved by original composer Yoko Shimomura."
It added: "For the first time in the series history, we will present a limited edition vinyl release, carefully and especially remastered in translucent colored vinyl, with art prints sourced from the Capcom archive."
Discussing its process, Brain Wave said it will be working with "researchers, consultants and world class engineers to bring you the best possible versions" of these soundtracks.
"We are also working closely with developers, license holders and original sound teams," it continued. "All of our work will be overseen and approved by the respective composers or the person in charge of the sound team (wherever possible). On top of that, our physical releases will contain extras like interviews, art booklets and more."
Brain Wave has not yet announced its release plan or schedule. Those interested can sign up here to be notified when pre-orders open.
Capcom recently detailed the upcoming Street Fighter 5 beta, which is set to begin on July 23 at 6 PM PT on PlayStation 4. The beta will have a total of six characters to play, but will launch initially with four, with Cammy and Birdie joining later.
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation director Christopher McQuarrie has said Naughty Dog's Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception inspires a sequence from his upcoming movie.
McQuarrie was asked how the plane stunt, which feature's Tom Cruise's character Ethan Hunt holding onto the side of a airplane as it takes off, was created.
The director replied by by saying it was a result of a "group effort" and "Uncharted," referring to the cargo plane sequence in Uncharted 3, during which Nathan Drake catches up to an aircraft and hops onto a landing wheel as lifts off.
Following the Tweet, Uncharted 3 co-director Justin Richmond replied ro McQuarrie saying "you just made my month."
According to its director, the PS4 exclusive will close the curtain on the story of Nathan Drake. Read GameSpot's full Uncharted 4 interview with Neil Druckmann for more on the game.
A beta for Uncharted 4's multiplayer mode will be available before the game's release next year. Access to the beta requires purchasing the Uncharted: Nathan Drake Collection, which launches in October for PlayStation 4.
Naughty Dog also announced today that Uncharted 4 will have a Photo Mode. Additional details about this feature will be announced later.

[UPDATE] Warner Bros. has now published the full, official version. Enjoy!
The original story is below.
A teaser trailer for the upcoming Suicide Squad movie was shown at Comic-Con this week; it was meant to be exclusive to panel attendees, but of course, it has now leaked.
Watch the footage below--and you might want to do so quickly, as it might get pulled.
Suicide Squad, due in theaters in 2016, is all about the bad guys. Even if the footage is choppy and the sound levels are low, the video does a good job of setting up the story and I'm intrigued to see more.
The audience erupts when Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto appears as Joker toward the end. The movie also stars Will Smith as Deadshot and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
What do you make of the trailer? Let us know in the comments below.
Crossover fighting game Tekken X Street Fighter remains in development, producer Katsuhiro Harada assures fans as part of a new interview with Japanese gaming magazineFamitsu. The game was announced five years ago this month during San Diego Comic-Con 2010, but we still don't know a lot about it. That's not changing, but at least fans can rest assured that the game has not been canceled.
In the interview, translated by Siliconera, Harada was jokingly asked if he and Namco had forgotten about the game.
"That's not true!" he responded. "I've been saying this since before, but the fact of the matter is that we're at a pretty far stage into its development."
As for what's holding the project up, Harada didn't say. But it's possible that the designer's work on other games such as Tekken 7, Pokken Tournament, Project Treasure, and a PlayStation 4 virtual reality title called Summer Lesson may be taking up a good chunk of his time. Whatever the case, Harada stressed that the foundation for Tekken X Street Fighter at least is in place right now.
"It might seem like we haven't started on it at all, but the character lineup has been decided upon since a very long time ago," he said. "And we've already finished the polygon models, moves, and systems."
Responding to concerns about Tekken X Street Fighter has become a regular thing for Harada. This is now the third straight year that Harada has confirmed that development remains ongoing, issuing previous statements in August 2013 and then again at Comic-Con 2014 before his comments this week.
Finally, with Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 both on the way, Harada said Namco is having a tough time deciding on the launch timing for Tekken X Street Fighter.
This matches up with what Harada said last year.
"It's still in development, and it is moving forward, but that's on the development side," he explained at the time. "So obviously, with all of the products, there's that special timing that we need for that to have its own spotlight. So on the marketing side, it's a special situation, but we can say that it hasn't been cancelled, so please relax."
