Incarnati0n Set to Return from His Permanent Ban in Competitive Play

By Rachel Gu on Apr 02, 2015 11:43 pm

In 2013, Riot permanently banned Nicolaj "Incarnati0n" Jensen from competitive play for toxic behavior in game and apparent engagements in a number of DDOS attacks against high elo players, the latter of which he has denied having any involvement.

However, this permanent ban has since then been lifted and Incarnati0n has been cleared to play May 11, 2015.

According to Riot, Incarnati0n "had made a serious effort to exceed normal standards of good behavior." This is in accordance with the company's new philosophy that "reform is meant to earn players second chances, not undo all the consequences of their past actions."

But what makes this case so compelling is that Incarnati0n is a talented and highly sought after solo-queue player, earning the number one rank on the ladder several times. Known for his calculated aggression and wide champion pool, players like Diamondprox have praised him, saying he was even better than Froggen in solo-queue.

There have been several teams tracking his progress, and there have been reports that Incarnati0n has already agreed to a deal with North American team Cloud9.

H1Z1's "Big Damn Patch" Out Now

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 02, 2015 11:23 pm

Daybreak Games, formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment, has rolled out a new update for its PC zombie game H1Z1 that it's calling "The Big Damn Patch." A silly title, maybe, but the update indeed lives up to the name.

The patch is certainly a big one, addressing a long list of bugs and introducing a suite of new features and items, including more guns, workbenches, and more. H1Z1's Dam area has also been given an overhaul. Now maybe the name "Big Damn Patch" makes a little more sense.

The full H1Z1 "Big Damn Patch" notes are available below, courtesy of Daybreak. For a closer look at the Dam area overhaul, see the images in the gallery at the bottom of this post.

H1Z1 launched through Steam Early Access back in January. Though the game experienced some server woes at launch, it has since gone on to sell more than 1 million copies in its unfinished state.

The game is also coming to PlayStation 4, though a release date for that version has not been announced. And, although Daybreak has broken free from Sony and is eyeing Xbox support, the company has not announced any plans to bring H1Z1 to Xbox One.

General:

  • New Male character model is available
  • The Dam area has been given a major overhaul
  • Battle Royale starting area has been updated
  • Current Grid position is now shown on-screen(like BR). Hand drawn map has basic grid markers
  • Added a new equip slot for the face
  • Fixed Bug - player will now exit a vehicle towards the same side on which they are seated
  • Fixed bug where player could sometimes get injured when moving off a rock
  • Fixed a lot of erroneous terrain bugs that have caused objects to float including cars, campsites, and other smaller objects
  • Added a small improvement to placing free placed items, preventing them from being able to clip through walls
  • Server optimizations made to the body sim
  • Zombies will now wear the lootable hats and helmets they have in their inventory. They will carry weapons. Note: They do not the wear lootable shirts or pants yet
  • Pickup Truck first person interior has been enhanced
  • R380 pistol added to game; it is a high fire rate, low caliber pocket pistol. The R380 can be found in BR and around the world in the core game
  • 12GA Shotgun damage increased

Zombie Spawn Changes:

  • Made zombie total population based on player population, to keep low-pop servers from getting completely overrun. This does not include the current wandering hordes (which are accounted for outside this number). On a server full of players, the total number of zombies is unchanged
  • Biased zombie spawns toward areas with more player heat, and more items, so that cities, camps, and player firefights have the highest rate of zombie spawns, and the wilderness areas have less
  • Made the spawned zombies that occur in player spawn areas biased more toward low-speed shamblers, so that new players (with no weapons) can more easily run away

Workbenches, Ammo Conversion, Gun Dismantling, and You:

  • Workbenches can be found in the world or crafted and placed. If you are close enough to the workbench you will be able to use it to create specific recipes. You dont actually interact with the workbench at this time, you just need to have it in your proximity. It can be used to convert ammo into other types of ammo, break down guns into gun repair kits, or to create some of the existing recipes that would be too difficult to do by hand

  • Any type of ammunition can be broken down into "Gun Components." Each bullet or shell will give you 1 Bullet Component. You can then use 2 Bullet Components to make any other type of ammunition

  • Guns can be dismantled into "Gun Parts." Larger guns will give more gun parts. You can then use three gun parts to create a "Gun Repair Kit." This repair kit can be used on weapons to repair them. Currently this will repair any weapon, but in the future it will be restricted to guns only

  • Metal crafting recipes will now require a workbench to create. This includes the recipes for Metal Sheets, Metal Pipes, Machete, Combat Knife, Bear Trap, Landmine, IED, and the above mentioned conversion recipes for ammo and guns

Elite: Dangerous Comes to Steam

By Daniel Starkey on Apr 02, 2015 11:09 pm

Elite: Dangerous is now on Steam for $59.99. The massive sci-fi space combat and exploration sim was previously only available for purchase through the game's website.

In a statement released to Eurogamer, creator Frontier Developments said that there would be "no functional difference" between the two versions. Those who bought the original will be able to play with folks on Steam and vice versa.

Elite: Dangerous will come with all of the usual advantages of owning a game on Steam, including automatic updates and patches, as well as achievements and trading cards. Current Elite: Dangerous owners can add the game to their Steam Library, but for now at least additional support will be limited.

According to a Frontier Developments forum post by executive producer Michael Brookes, adding Elite: Dangerous to steam is a simple process. "Click Games > Add a non-Steam game to my library and add EDLaunch.exe, ordinarily located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\ on a PC."

PlayStation 4 PSN Issues Reported

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 02, 2015 10:51 pm

The PlayStation Network is currently facing connectivity issues causing headaches for some PlayStation 4 users. Just minutes ago, the "Ask PlayStation" Twitter account made the issues known, as you can see.

The PlayStation Network status page, meanwhile, reveals that the issues are related to launching games, applications, and/or social features such as trophies, messaging, or your friends list. Other services such as PlayStation Now, PlayStation Vue, and the PlayStation Store itself are unaffected.

"We appreciate your patience while we address this," Sony wrote.

GameSpot will continue to monitor the PSN's status throughout the day and update this post with new information as it becomes available.

Currently, the PSN problems appear to be limited to the PS4, not affecting other platforms like the PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita.

Are you running into any PSN issues at the moment? Let us know in the comments below or reach out directly via the email address listed here.

Texas Lottery Launches Tetris-Themed Scratch-Off Game

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 02, 2015 10:25 pm

The Texas Lottery this week launched a Tetris-themed scratch-off game with more than $11.5 million in prizes up for grabs. The organization is using the excellent tagline "Don't Mess With Tetris" to promote it.

Take a look at the scratch-off card right here.

Even non-winning cards are still potentially worth something. Players can enter them into a second-chance drawing for a shot at winning various Tetris-themed merchandise, including branded hats, messenger bags, and even bathrobes.

Originally launched in 1984, the Tetris brand is now 30 years sold. It's one of gaming most well-known franchises, and has sold hundreds of millions of games to date.

The Tetris brand still lives on in the console space. Just last summer, Ubisoft released Tetris Ultimate on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The game even runs at 1080p/60fps.

Dark Souls 2 PS4 Frame Rate Better Than Xbox One - Report

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 02, 2015 08:38 pm

Eurogamer's Digital Foundry has posted its latest performance analysis report, this one for upcoming remastered role-playing game Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin. The report concludes that while both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One editions run at 1080p, the PS4 edition has a better overall frame rate.

"Xbox One pays a persistent price for matching the PS4's visual standard," Digital Foundry writes. "Both formats target 60fps and engage v-sync at all times, but Microsoft's platform suffers the greater drops between the two in each scene of our frame rate analysis."

One area in particular, The Forest of Fallen Giants, highlights the frame rate disparity quite convincingly. During this enemy-populated area, the PS4 edition is able to regularly achieve 50-60fps, while the Xbox One edition is about 10fps below at 40-50fps during this particular segment.

"Sony's machine does not produce a perfect 60fps of course, but it is a consistently better performer--and in a game that demands pinpoint timing for rolls and ripostes, the smoother frame rate can make a difference," the report states.

The full technical analysis is a really interesting, in-depth read. For more on the game's visuals, you can check out GameSpot's Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin graphics comparison video above.

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin, a remastered version of last year's role-playing game that bundles together all its DLC and more, launched this week for PC, and is coming to PS4 and Xbox One on April 7. For now, you can read GameSpot's review-in-progress.

Civilization Designer Launches New Strategy Game

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 02, 2015 08:30 pm

DomiNations, the new mobile strategy game from Civilization and Rise of Nations designer Brian Reynolds and the new version of Big Huge Games, is available now across iOS and Android devices. Big Huge Games worked on the free game with Nexon, the company that's also behind Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski's next game.

In DomiNations, you choose from a variety of nations to lead, including the British, Romans, Chinese, Germans, French, Japanese, and Greeks. The game aims to separate itself from the pack of similar games by allowing users to "play through the ages." In essence, the game unfolds across the "expanse of human history," Big Huge Games said in the title's announcement today.

"Players must research landmark technological developments, leverage unique strategic civilization abilities, and build Wonders of the World in order to pave their way to victory," the developer explained. "With famous generals like Alexander the Great, Cleopatra, and Napoleon at the helm, players can relive history's most famous conflicts at the tips of their fingers."

More than 100 upgradeable structures are available in DomiNations. Players must also manage their food and economy while simultaneously engaging in real-time combat scenarios to expand their domain.

The game's campaign starts with the dawn of man in the Fertile Crescent and moves through to World War II and later events. DomiNations' multiplayer mode supports head-to-head battles as well as co-op.

You can download DomiNations today by following these links: iTunes, Google Play.

For lots more on DomiNations, how it came to be, and the resurrection of Big Huge Games, check out GameSpot's interview with Reynolds. A variety of screenshots are also available in the gallery below.

Windows 10's Internet Explorer Replacement, Project Spartan, Now Available to Test

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 02, 2015 08:14 pm

Microsoft has released a preview version of Project Spartan, the company's upcoming browser that is set to replace Internet Explorer when Windows 10 arrives later this year.

Project Spartan, which will be the default Web browser for Windows 10, is available now through the latest Windows 10 Technical Preview for Windows Insider members. You can join this program here.

The new browser is available in the Windows 10 preview program through the "globe" icon on the taskbar. Features available right now include Cortana integration, a "reading view" option, and Web Note, which lets you scribble notes directly on the screen.

Of course, the Project Spartan build available now in the Windows 10 preview program is not finished. Additional features will be added later in advance of Windows 10's full launch this summer.

What's more, though Project Spartan (or whatever its final name turns out to be) will be the main Window 10 browser, Microsoft is not doing away entirely with Internet Explorer. This browser will still ship with Windows 10, but mostly for compatibility reasons, the company explained previously.

Windows 10 also features a new Xbox gaming app, which will not require Xbox Live Gold. Meanwhile, another marquee gaming feature for Windows 10 is that it will allow Xbox One games to stream to PCs and tablets running the new OS. In addition, Windows 10 supports cross-platform play, starting with Fable Legends.

Microsoft is offering Windows 10 as a free upgrade for existing Windows users, even if you pirated the operating system.

Mortal Kombat X's Brutal Violence Aims to be Fantastical, Not Realistic

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 02, 2015 06:57 pm

NetherRealm's upcoming fighting game Mortal Kombat X is unquestionably an incredibly brutal and violent game. Its fatalities are gruesome, depicting severed heads, ripped-out ribs, and other bloody affairs. But the violence is meant to be fantastical and not realistic, lead game designer John Edwards says.

"We like to keep everything a little on the tongue-in-cheek side," he told Polygon. "We don't try to get the gore to be too realistic. We always want people to do a fatality and at first you're just like, 'Wow, that's gross.'"

"But then you laugh about it after, because it's so ridiculous," Edwards added. "I mean, pulling the guy's organs out? That's not something that's realistic violence, right? It looks realistic, just graphically because of the power of the new consoles, but it's still very tongue-in-cheek and kind of fantastical."

Mortal Kombat X is the first game for a new generation of consoles, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Edwards mentions again how leveraging the power of these machines has led to breakthroughs in the game's gore system.

"We can punch holes in pretty much any part of the body that we want to," he said. "The tech has allowed us to do a bunch of crazy stuff that we've never been able to do before."

In regards to Mortal Kombat's trademark violence, series co-creator Ed Boon recently told GameSpot that NetherRealm works hard to ensure it doesn't go too far.

"Every game, we have these brainstorming meetings, and...somebody will suggest something and it's more of a gut feeling that, you know, that's a little too far," Boon said. "I think every single game, [there are] those discussions where, you know, everyone's trying to push the envelope, but there's always a line that you never want to cross."

You can read our full interview with Boon, which also touches on fan demands and more, here.

The Mortal Kombat X release date is April 14 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions, however, have been delayed.

Xbox One's Quantum Break Delayed

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 02, 2015 06:32 pm

Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment's upcoming time-bending Xbox One shooter Quantum Break has been delayed. The game, previously set to launch in 2015, is now slated to arrive next year.

Microsoft head of publishing Shannon Loftis said in a statement that the company already has the "strongest games lineup in Xbox history" with games like Halo 5: Guardians, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fable Legends, Forza Motorsport 6, and "more we'll announce in the coming months."

"With so many games launching this year, moving Quantum Break to 2016 extends our incredible portfolio into next year with a monster new IP," she said.

This move isn't all that surprising. After all, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer said previously that Microsoft's 2015 lineup was so stuffed with great games that the company might need to move something. "I honestly don't know that we can actually ship all the stuff that thinks it's trying to ship [in holiday 2015]," he said back in November 2014.

As Loftis alluded to, Microsoft is likely to have more announcements in store for E3 2015, including possibly some news about Gears of War.

Microsoft also confirmed Thursday that Quantum Break's live-action TV show counterpart remains in development following the closure of Xbox Entertainment Studios last year.

Remedy creative director Sam Lake also shared his thoughts on the Quantum Break delay, saying the extra development time will allow the studio to further polish the game.

"We thank our fans for their patience, and want them to know that the team is taking advantage of this opportunity to polish and fine tune the game to create the kind of standout entertainment experience they've come to expect from us," he said.

Previously, Lake spoke of Quantum Break as the "ultimate Remedy game."

Quantum Break isn't the first big-name game to get pushed out of 2015. Others include The Legend of Zelda Wii U, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, and Homefront: The Revolution.

More Retailer-Exclusive Amiibo Toys Revealed

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 02, 2015 06:18 pm

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Toys 'R Us confirmed that it has the exclusive on the Greninja amiibo.

The original story is below.

Two of the toys from Nintendo's next wave of Amiibo--Jigglypuff and Ness--are retailer exclusives.

Target will be the only retailer to sell the Jigglypuff Amiibo, according to a post on its website. Meanwhile, you'll need to shop at GameStop to pick up a new Ness Amiibo.

Retailer-exclusive Amiibo toys are par for the course at this point.

Other exclusives include Shulk (GameStop), Meta Knight (Best Buy), Lucario (Toys 'R Us), and Gold Mario (Walmart).

The new Jigglypuff and Ness toys go on sale starting May 29. Others in the new wave include Pac-Man, Charizard, Wario, and more. See the full lineup here.

As of February, Nintendo had sold more than 5.7 million Amiibo toys. By comparison, Call of Duty publisher Activision has sold in excess of 240 million Skylanders toys so far, though of course this franchise was the first on the scene while Amiibo is just getting started.

Uncensored Binding of Isaac Coming to Xbox One, Wii U, New 3DS

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 02, 2015 05:51 pm

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, the latest game from Super Meat Boy co-developer Edmund McMillen, is in development for Xbox One, Wii U, and the New Nintendo 3DS. McMillen originally announced the news yesterday, which was April Fools' Day, with some taking it as a joke. However, it's actually happening.

"So for those that only read headlines, Binding of Isaac Rebirth is FOR SURE coming to Wii U, new 3DS, & Xbox One soonish!" he wrote on Twitter. Attached was a Vine of the New 3DS version (see below).

Meanwhile, Binding of Isaac producer Tyrone Rodriguez said in his own tweet that the game will not be censored at all when it launches on the new platforms.

"The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth for new 3DS, Wii U, or Xbox One is not censored in any way," he said.

In February 2012, McMillen said Nintendo blocked The Binding of Isaac from launching for the 3DS not because of its M-for-Mature rating, but rather due to its "questionable religious content."

The Binding of Isaac sees players controlling a child who must escape the clutches of his mother, who is out to kill him after the voice of God commands a sacrifice.

It appears Nintendo has been able to get past whatever objections about The Binding of Isaac it originally had.

The Binding of Isaac was originally released in 2011 for PC. A remake of the game, Rebirth, launched in 2014 for PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita. For more on the title, check out GameSpot's review of The Binding of Isaac.

Respawn programmer announced the news on Twitter.

He also said at the time that Respawn had formed a second internal team to work on "small, exploratory" projects.

Battlefield Hardline Patch Will Nerf Deadly Couch

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 02, 2015 05:12 pm

The first patch for Visceral's recently released Battlefield Hardline will reduce the effectiveness of the multiplayer shooter's deadly couch Easter egg. Apparently, the couch was actually proving to be reliably useful to some players, and not a throwaway joke vehicle as Visceral had intended.

That's all changing with Hardline's first patch. Per the official patch notes:

"Couch health reduced and repair rate decreased to a miniscule amount, making the Couch the one-off it was intended."

The couch, called "The American Dream," can be found in Hotwire mode on the Dust Bowl map. It spawns in one of several different locations, but only a single time per round--once it's been destroyed, it's gone until the next game begins. However, it can be repaired.

Hardline's upcoming patch also makes a variety of bug fixes and general gameplay changes. The full patch notes are printed below.

The patch will be deployed in the "near future," though a specific launch date was not announced. Hardline is available now for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC.

BUG FIXES:

  • Fixed a server crash in Rescue
  • Increased the character limit in the MapList to support up to 150 maps in a rotation
  • You can now set the time limit to 0 and it disables the time limit instead of instantly ending the round in Blood Money
  • Various fixes for server crashes with rental servers (multiple issues addressed)
  • Fix for the timer in Conquest freezing when the user set the time limit higher than 800
  • Fix for MP squad join issue where after the squad leader gets disconnected, a new leader cannot kick members or disband
  • Fix for the patch awarded in released game for reaching Rank 10 in the Beta
  • Fix for Derailed Levolution where players were teleported to origin of Point B and killed in some circumstances
  • Fix for crash if the UI is disabled in the .cfg file
  • Fix for Bloodmoney exploit in HH where players could access the money pile through the floor/roof
  • Fix on XB1 for players using invite/join on friend after Quickmatching
  • Fix for the Uzi's weapon license cost, setting it to the correct value of $50,000
  • Fix for X360 players being unable to invite friends while playing Rescue
  • Fix for a rare crash in the Customize screen
  • All platforms, miscellaneous low frequency crash fixes

GAMEPLAY CHANGES:

  • Conquest tickets increased (CQL 999, CQS 600)
  • Greatly decreased nearby bullet impact flinch; your aimpoint will not shift from rounds striking the environment near you
  • Fixed some issues with FLIR/IRNV
  • RPG reduced to 1 ammo from back of cars, with smaller explosion radius overall thus requiring more skill to use effectively
  • TDM friendzones have been adjusted for better spawning
  • Rescue / Crosshair exploit where players could skip the round start time by hitting START or ESC has been fixed
  • Couch health reduced and repair rate decreased to a miniscule amount, making the Couch the one-off it was intended
  • Player should no longer Quickmatch into servers with unsupported numbers of players
  • K10: Reduce max damage to 33 and min damage to 8
  • Saiga and PTR: reduce recoil to bring more in line with Cop faction DMRs
  • HCAR and HK51: reduce recoil to bring more in line with SCAR-H and SA-58
  • .410 Jury: Increase damage per pellet to become more effective
  • FMG-9: increase damage per round to 25 and push out falloff start range to make these weapons more effective
  • Battlerifle min damage increased to 25 across the board
  • AKM min damage reduced to 24
