Degraded GTA 5 Xbox One/PS4 Graphics Fixed With New Patch

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 07, 2015 11:00 pm

Rockstar Games has launched a new update for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions of open-world game Grand Theft Auto V that fixes the graphical problems that sprung up from an earlier patch.

In addition to clearing out those bugs, which resulted in a deterioration in overall graphical quality, the patch fixes a couple of other visual-focused errors. The three fixes included with the patch are listed below, courtesy of the Rockstar support site.

  • Fixes graphical issues on PS4 and Xbox One introduced after Title Update 1.08.
  • Corrects an issue where some players' character appearances would change periodically
  • Fixes an animation issue where another player aiming on your screen would not play the correct animation

The graphical issues were limited to the Xbox One and PS4 editions of the game.

In other news about GTA V, the PC edition of the crime game is now available to pre-load from Steam and the Rockstar Warehouse. That version of the game launches one week from today, on April 14, and will include online Heists right away.

Professor Layton, Fantasy Life Sequels Move from 3DS to Smartphones

By Chris Pereira on Apr 07, 2015 10:53 pm
Fantasy Life 2

Two Level-5 franchises that have recently called 3DS home, Fantasy Life and Professor Layton, are getting sequels. However, those sequels will be coming not for 3DS or any other traditional handheld gaming device, but smartphones.

At a Level-5 event in Japan last night, the developer announced new entries in the two franchises, Siliconera reports. Fantasy Life 2 appears to resemble its 3DS predecessor, with cartoonish graphics, 12 different lives (the game's terminology for jobs) to pursue, and so on. One change is an increased focus on building up your city, perhaps in response to the popularity of empire-building in mobile sensations like Clash of Clans and Game of War.

Layton 7 strays further away from the established formula, and looks to be a card game of some sort, as you can see below.

Layton 7

While the move in platforms is sure to annoy those who dismiss mobile gaming, making matters worse is that both sequels carry numbers: Fantasy Life 2: Two Moons and the Village of God and Layton 7. This suggests they are the next full entries in these series, rather than simple mobile spin-offs like what we've seen from Assassin's Creed, Pokemon, and Dragon Age.

Just because these games are coming to mobile doesn't preclude them from seeing release on 3DS--and, indeed, Siliconera notes that Layton 7 was originally announced in 2013 as coming to 3DS in addition to iOS and Android. But there was no mention of 3DS versions during last night's event, so it remains to be seen if there is any chance of seeing these series continue on handhelds.

Nintendo itself will be entering the mobile game development business, as it recently announced a partnership with fellow Japanese company DeNA. It's a move that goes against what Nintendo has been saying for years, though it claims it isn't something it was forced into doing.

$20 Gets You One of Xbox One's Best Exclusives, Sunset Overdrive

By Chris Pereira on Apr 07, 2015 09:51 pm

Following its recent price drop, Best Buy has further slashed the price of Sunset Overdrive, bringing it down to just $20. With the Gamers Club Unlocked discount program, it's only $16.

The four-hour sale lasts a limited time--it's available only until 1 PM Pacific today, April 7. It's always possible that other retailers (like Amazon) will price match it, but if you want to ensure you get your hands on the game at its lowest price to date, you should act fast.

Microsoft recently announced that Sunset's price had been lowered to $40, coinciding with the release of its final DLC pack, Dawn of the Rise of the Fallen Machines.

Sunset Overdrive was released last October as an Xbox One exclusive. Developed by Insomniac Games, best known for PlayStation-exclusives like Ratchet & Clank and Resistance, it's an over-the-top open-world game where almost everything in the world can be used to jump or grind on. The weapons also help to set it apart from other games, with bowling-bowl launchers and TNT-strapped teddy bears being among the lineup.

Two Witcher 3 Expansions Announced, Promising 30 Hours of Gameplay

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 07, 2015 09:37 pm

In addition to 16 free pieces of DLC, upcoming open-world role-playing game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be supported by two major, paid expansions, the first of which will launch this year, CD Projekt Red announced Tuesday.

The first is called Hearts of Stone, which sees players venturing into an area called "No Man's Land" and another location called Oxenfurt. Here, players will take on a quest from the "mysterious Man of Glass" that sounds like it will be a tough challenge.

"Caught in a thick tangle of deceit, Geralt will need all his cunning and strength to solve the mystery and emerge unscathed," CD Projekt Red said about the content, which should span around 10 hours.

The next Witcher 3 add-on is called Blood and Wine. This content, which is expected to provide 20 hours of gameplay, is set in an all-new region called Toussaint. CD Projekt Red isn't yet talking specifics, saying only that this content will "take Geralt to a land untainted by war, where an atmosphere of carefree indulgence and knightly ritual masks an ancient, bloody secret."

Both Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine will include new gear and enemies, as well as characters who are "both new and dearly missed." CD Projekt Red also promises that both expansion packs are "crafted with maximum attention to detail and quality."

Hearts of Stone launches in October, while Blood and Wine is due to release in the first quarter of 2016, meaning it should arrive by the end of March 2016. The expansions will be sold together through a Witcher 3 Expansion Pass, though pricing was not announced. CD Projekt Red will also offer a bundle that comes with the game and the expansion pass. Pricing for this bundle was also not revealed.

Unfortunately, no images or video from either expansion have been released.

CD Projekt Red has criticized paid DLC in the past, but co-founder Marcin Iwinski says today that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are truly significant add-ons that could rival some full, standalone games.

"We remember the time when add-on disks truly expanded games by delivering meaningful content," Iwinski said in a statement. "As gamers, we'd like to bring that back. We've said in the past that if we ever decide to release paid content, it will be vast in size and represent real value for the money. Both our expansions offer more hours of gameplay than quite a few standalone games out there."

"While we're offering the Expansion Pass now, we want to make one thing clear: don't buy it if you have any doubts. Wait for reviews or play The Witcher and see if you like it first. As always, it's your call," he added.

After multiple delays, The Witcher 3 release date is May 19 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Bloodborne Exploit Found to Significantly Lower Difficulty

By Rob Crossley on Apr 07, 2015 09:19 pm

An apparently unintentional "easy mode" has been discovered within the acclaimed PS4 exclusive Bloodborne, due to what appears to be a bug that takes advantage of the action-RPG's difficulty parameters.

Much like many games developed by the Tokyo studio From Software, Bloodborne is notorious for its merciless difficulty. But it looks like, as a means to balance its difficultly, the game appears to dynamically lower its difficulty depending on how long a player spends in the game.

Due to this, one observant Reddit user has discovered that the game enters into an unofficial "easy mode" if left running for a number of hours. The attack patterns and strategies of various foes and bosses decay over time, the user claims, to the extent that--if players wait long enough--the challenge becomes easy to overcome.

The Reddit poster, going by the online handle "Meatballz," explained: "I just tested this yesterday by turning off the PS4 power saving options and leaving Bloodborne running all night. Sure enough, when I played in the morning [one of the game's bosses] Logarius had transformed from an intense spell-casting maniac into a senile old man who did nothing but attack with his scythe over and over."

With regards to the boss Logarius, two videos appear to show key differences in its attack patterns after the game has been running for long enough.

Logarius "standard"

Logarius "easy"

GameSpot's Bloodborne review was effused with praise. Critic Kevin VanOrd wrote: "Bloodborne is rewarding to play, impressive both in how it cribs from the Souls games as well as in how it deviates from them."

Those seeking more help with the game should turn to GameSpot's Bloodborne starter guide and bosses guide.

Below you'll also find choice images of the PS4 exclusive.

What is Microsoft's "Forzatech"?

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 07, 2015 08:34 pm

Microsoft has filed a new trademark application for something called "Forzatech," though the company's intentions for it are not immediately clear.

The Xbox company filed for the trademark with the United States Patent & Trademark Office on April 2. It is listed as "game software," and unfortunately, no further description is provided.

Given that Forza is featured in the name, it's quite likely that "Forzatech" is related to Microsoft's major racing franchise. The name, however, doesn't sound like something would call a game itself, but possibly a related service or technology.

Microsoft already holds trademarks for other non-game Forza products, one of which is Forza Hub, the name of the free Xbox app that collects news and information about the racing series. The company has also trademarked "Drivatar," which is an artificial intelligence technology featured in recent Forza titles.

The next Forza game is the upcoming Forza Motorsport 6 for Xbox One, though it's unclear if Forzatech is in any way tied to that title.

We've contacted Microsoft asking for more information about the Forzatech trademark.

EA Making Minions Games

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 07, 2015 08:30 pm

Electronic Arts' mobile gaming push continues. The gaming giant announced today that is has signed a multi-title deal with Illumination Entertainment and Universal to make games based on the Minions from the Despicable Me franchise, as well as other characters from the movie studio's forthcoming projects.

The first game from this new partnership is Minions Paradise, which launches this summer for mobile devices. In the game, users can create a "Minion utopia" and even play as an all-new Minion named Phil.

EA isn't making the Minions games alone, however, as Illumination's writers, directors, artists, and animators are said to be working "hand-in-hand" with EA's internal development teams on the various projects.

According to EA Mobile executive Frank Gibeau, the company's Minions games will offer an "engaging story and deep and varied gameplay." Gibeau also called the Minions franchise a "global phenomenon."

Minions Paradise will be a free game, supported by microtransactions. Here is EA's description of the game:

"Phil leads the Minions to create the world of their dreams after finding themselves shipwrecked on a tropical island. Players will help the Minions build, craft, and design their ultimate tropical playground, complete with whirling waterslides, electric eel tanks, firefly trees, and of course, plenty of bananas."

Minions Paradise isn't the first mobile game based on the series, of course. Gameloft's free endless runner Despicable Me: Minion Rush was released in June 2013 and has since been downloaded a half-billion times.

This also isn't EA's first licensed mobile game, as the publisher also created The Simpsons: Tapped Out. That game has been a hit, generating more than $100 million in revenue as of October 2013.

Driveclub Servers Unavailable for up to Eight Hours Today [UPDATE]

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 07, 2015 08:15 pm

[UPDATE] The Driveclub server maintenance has finished ahead of schedule.

The original story is below.

PlayStation 4 racing game Driveclub's online mode--a major draw for the title--is currently unavailable and will remain that way for a good portion of today, April 7. The downtime, which spans up to eight total hours, is the result of Evolution deploying "major updates" to the racer's servers.

This downtime, if it spans the full eight hours, will run through about 7 PM BST / 2 PM EDT / 11 AM PDT. Driveclub's offline mode can still be played during the maintenance period.

"Apologies for any inconvenience this causes and thank you for your patience while we continue working to improve the game," developer Evolution said.

Evolution has been making regular server upgrades to Driveclub since the game's troubled release in October 2014 in an effort to improve the overall experience and to prepare for the launch of the free PlayStation Plus edition. The studio said previously that, while this free version is not canceled, the developer won't release it until it's confident the servers will hold up.

New PayDay 2 DLC Takes Place During an Alesso Concert

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 07, 2015 07:42 pm

Sweeden based developer Starbreeze on Tuesday announced new DLC for crime game Payday 2, and it is certainly unique. Titled "The Alesso Heist," the new content takes place during an Alesso concert and the DJ--whose real name is Alessandro Lindblad--will actually appear in the game as himself.

The Alesso Heist was designed as part of a collaborative effort between Starbreeze and Alesso, who also wrote a brand new song for the DLC called "Payday," which you can listen to via the Spotify embed below.

The expansion also introduces four new masks (designed by Alesso and featuring his trademark logo; see above), along with new ranged and melee weapons, as well as four new achievements to unlock.

No images of Alesso's in-game character model have been released, and it's unclear exactly what players will be stealing at the EDM show.

"I'm a huge gaming fan," Alesso said in a statement. "Starbreeze asked me to do my own piece of the game and appear in the game itself and it was an immediate 'Yes' from me."

The Alesso Heist arrives on PC in May at a price point of $ 6.99 / € 6.99.

This announcement comes just a few weeks after Starbreeze reached a new, two-year deal with publisher 505 Games to create even more content for Payday 2. "We'll never stop making Payday," Starbreeze chairman Michael Hjorth said as part of the announcement in March.

Payday 2 is also coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 this June through the Crimewave Edition.

The Furious 7 Car Pack includes:

New Star Wars HD Movie Collection Coming to Xbox, PlayStation

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 07, 2015 05:59 pm

Disney has announced a new Star Wars movie bundle--the Digital Movie Collection--which contains all six of the sci-fi classics for the first time in digital HD with extras including deleted scenes and more.

The movies arrive April 10 individually or through a bundle that contains the entire saga and will be sold at a variety of digital platforms, including Xbox and PlayStation. As you'd expect, some stores are offering extra incentives to convince you to buy through them.

Microsoft is giving away an R2-D2 (based on A New Hope) Xbox Live avatar, as well as the Star Wars Pinball Pack for free-to-play game Pinball FX 2 for Xbox One or Xbox 360. On top of that, anyone who pre-purchases the Star Wars Digital Movie Collection through Xbox will get a 60-second sneak peek at the bonus materials featured in the movies.

Sony has not announced any bonuses for buying the new Star Wars re-released through the PlayStation Store.

In terms of pricing, for Xbox Video at least, the complete bundle costs $100, while individual movies will be available for $20. Xbox Video is available online, as well as through apps for Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows 8, and Windows Phones.

The next new Star Wars movie is December's Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens. Meanwhile, Electronic Arts will reveal new information about Star Wars: Battlefront later this month.
