PSA: You Might Have Another Free PS4 PS Plus Game Right Now

By Chris Pereira on Apr 04, 2015 12:06 am

If you were a PlayStation Plus member in January who claimed every available free game, you should now have a new game to download on PlayStation 4.

Among January's Plus games was Woah Dave for PlayStation Vita. The PS4 version of the game debuted this week, and as it supports cross-buy, anyone who added the Vita version to their account back in January can now download it on PS4, free of charge.

Despite its flagrant misspelling of the word "whoa" as "woah," Woah Dave is a fun, retro-style 2D platformer where you fight aliens and collect coins by attacking with whatever you have at your disposal. Typically, that's the egg of a soon-to-hatch alien, effectively letting you slay alien invaders with their cousins. Or something.

If you didn't grab it while it was free--or subsequently buy it after January--Woah Dave is available for $5 on the PlayStation Store.

You still have a few more days to claim March's free games before April's take their place on Tuesday, April 7.

Xbox Boss Thinks Banjo as a Super Smash Bros. DLC Character Is "Cool"

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 03, 2015 11:39 pm

Which character should be added to the Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS roster next? That's the question Nintendo posed to fans yesterday when it launched a new voting portal. Microsoft's Xbox boss Phil Spencer has now weighed in, saying he'd like to see Banjo the honey bear from Rare's iconic platformer series.

Not only does Spencer think it "would be cool" if Banjo was added to the lineup, but Microsoft and Nintendo have worked together before, so it's unlikely there would be licensing issues.

Twitter user Ray Styles has already put together a mock-up Smash Bros. poster for Banjo (and Kazooie). Spencer didn't say if he'd also want Kazooie to appear in the new Smash Bros. game. The two characters have vastly different attributes, after all.

Nintendo's Smash Bros. character voting poll closes in October 2015, so--even if Banjo does make it into the game--you won't get to play the character for quite a while.

New DLC characters are coming to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS much sooner, however. During this week's Nintendo Direct broadcast, the company announced that Mewtwo will be available starting April 15. Beyond that, Nintendo will release another new character--Lucas--in June, though pricing has not yet been announced.

Watch Destiny Get the Parks and Recreation Intro Treatment

By Chris Pereira on Apr 03, 2015 11:28 pm

The recently concluded Parks and Recreation featured a very distinctive--and excellent--intro sequence. And while Chris Pratt beckoning you to join him while holding a guitar is part of its charm, the same style of intro also works surprisingly well for Destiny.

Appropriately titled Marks and Reputation, a new video put together by Destiny clan Bus of the Undead mashes up Parks and Rec's intro with footage of Destiny. It introduces many of the key characters in Destiny in place of the show's, even nailing the timing of it all, as the comparison video below shows.

Bungie announced this week that it will be banning "toxic" players from matchmaking, and also reducing the difficulty of the game's most difficult Strike mission, Ceberus Vae III. The update has not yet been dated, nor has the upcoming House of Wolves DLC, but we will be hearing more on that front sometime this month.

You Can Now Turn PC Game Keys Into DRM-Free Digital Copies

By Chris Pereira on Apr 03, 2015 11:04 pm

Digital games seller GOG has introduced a new feature allowing you to obtain digital GOG versions of select games that you have CD Keys for.

Even better than simply acquiring a digital copy that will work on modern computers, this means you can take a game that was released on disc with DRM and turn it into a DRM-free digital version. Doing so also gets you any of the bonuses that GOG offers if you buy the game through them, like manuals, wallpapers, soundtracks, and more, depending on the particular game.

There are six supported games that can currently be reclaimed on GOG's website, three of which are editions only sold in Russian-speaking territories:

GOG says it's working to support additional games, but there's no word on how frequently we'll be seeing more introduced.

"We have been fighting to free all games from DRM since the very beginning, and this new feature is the next step for us," said GOG's Oleg Klapovsky in a press release. "It's not a simple job, but we plan to bring in even more games in the future."

This initiative is similar to something Steam does, where keys for retail games from Valve and certain third-parties can be redeemed on the platform for a Steam copy. Although GOG's offering is currently very limited, it does have the advantage of shedding any DRM associated with the game without requiring you to use Steam.

Monster Hunter 4 Free DLC Adds Mario, Sonic Skins

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 03, 2015 10:38 pm

Capcom on Friday released the second free DLC pack for 3DS game Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, the highlight of which is content themed around the Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises. A total of 14 new quests, which reward players with new gear and more, are available through the add-on.

Defeat the Congalala and Emerald Congalala subspecies in the "Mario: Oh, brothers" quest and you'll unlock materials that can be used to build gear for your Palico companion in the form of Mario and Luigi costumes, as well as an Invincible Hammer weapon.

This content has actually been in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate since launch, but today's new DLC should allow players to more easily craft the items.

Meanwhile, the "Super Sonic Seregios" quest sees players taking part in a fast-paced (of course) fight against the Frenzied Seregios creatures. Defeat them and you'll be able to craft Sonic gear for your Palicoes.

Other quests included in the new Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate April DLC have players battling against legendary creatures such as Shagaru Magala, Fatalis, and Kirin. As you could have guessed, defeating them will allow players to craft new gear for their hunters.

Below is a roundup of all the new content coming to Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate today, courtesy of Capcom.

  • 14 New quests
  • 2 New weapons
  • 3 Complete armor sets
  • 4 Palico weapons
  • 7 Palico armor sets
  • 1 Bonus Palico: Blue Pal
  • 4 Guild Card backgrounds
  • 2 Guild Card poses
  • 13 Guild Card titles
  • 1 Poogie outfit: Vagaboar

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate was released for 3DS in February and Capcom plans to release free add-on content on the first Friday of every month "for the next several months." If you haven't downloaded March's free expansion, not to worry, as it's still available to pick up through the game's DLC menu.

Finally, Capcom warns that it is performing some "essential" server maintenance April 4-5, during which time the Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate DLC server will be available. As such, if you want to play the content this weekend, maybe during Easter travels, you'll want to download it today.

March's free Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate was focused around the Legend of Zelda franchise.

You're Basically Screwed if You Used OnLive

By Chris Pereira on Apr 03, 2015 10:34 pm

OnLive's shutdown didn't come as a major surprise when it was announced this week, but it is nonetheless an unfortunate development for those who have paid to make use of the service in the past.

An FAQ about what the closure (and sale to Sony) means has provided OnLive users with some bad news. OnLive used to offer PlayPass games, which were streaming versions of full games, like Splinter Cell: Conviction. Any such game purchased in the past "will no longer be available on OnLive after April 30, 2015." That means these games, which were locked to OnLive's platform and can't be downloaded and played like normal digital games, will disappear for good from owners' libraries in a few weeks' time.

As for game saves and achievements, these, too, will be deleted come May 1. The exception to this are games that supported CloudLift, which was the service OnLive began offering last year that allowed you to pay a subscription fee to play streaming versions of certain Steam games you bought. Any saves or achievements for games you played through CloudLift will continue to be available on Steam.

Some people made use of OnLive as a way of playing PC-only games on a Mac. With OnLive going away, Mac owners will suddenly have no way to access those games without resorting to some alternative, like dual booting. Those hoping this will entitle them to getting their money back are out of luck, as OnLive says, "Unfortunately no refunds are available for Steam games purchased via OnLive."

And finally, there is the OnLive microconsole and accompanying wireless controller. According to OnLive, this hardware doesn't work with any other platforms. And, like Steam games, no refunds are available for OnLive hardware, unless you happened to purchase it on or after February 1, 2015. If that's the case, you can email support@onlive.com and request a refund using the subject "Hardware Refund."

Gabe Newell Is a Boss in This New Indie Game

By Chris Pereira on Apr 03, 2015 10:30 pm

Indie game Crawl is adding a secret new boss character: Valve managing director Gabe Newell.

Developer Powerhoof recently revealed the new addition to the game, which has been in early access on Steam since last year, with an animated GIF showing off Newell (below). Because this was seen by much of the world on April Fools' day, this was presumed by many to be a joke. In fact, it isn't, as designer Barney Cumming has clarified that the blog post announcement was actually posted on April 2 in Melbourne, Australia.

Cumming described the addition of Newell to the game as having "been at the top of my list since the very start." If all goes according to plan, he'd be added in Crawl's next update.

However, Powerhoof evidently didn't ask either Newell or Valve for permission to use the former's likeness; it was only after it began attracting the attention of the media that Cumming emailed Newell for the thumbs up.

In the email, which Cumming shared on Powerhoof's blog, he presents the case for adding Newell. This includes the fact that he would be Crawl's most powerful character, an exchange of pictures so that Cumming's likeness can be used in Valve's games, and an offer to get the developers of Crossy Road to add Newell's favorite animal to the game. Cumming also argues, "The transformation implies your more recent bearded look is actually your Super Saiyan form."

Oh, and he says "please."

"I always got the impression Gabe would be cool with stuff like this, but when a big company is involved who knows what kind of crazy reasons they'll have, so at least I can say I tried!" Cumming said of the email.

Newell has yet to respond, at least publicly, nor has Valve responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

Crawl is a multiplayer dungeon crawler where one player assumes the role of the hero while others control traps and monsters. At this point, its multiplayer is limited to local play only, though online support is described as "a possibility."

Destiny Soundtrack Gets Heavier With This Excellent Drum Cover

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 03, 2015 09:23 pm

Destiny's music extends beyond that one Paul McCartney song. Others sounds on the soundtrack, like the "The Union," are more driving and intense. That intensity is ramped up further when you add drums, as TcPron demonstrates in this new video, which was originally shared by Bungie in its Weekly Update.

It's a pretty excellent drum cover, even if he does get a little sloppy (his own words) for a few measures early on.

What's perhaps more impressive is that the original track only features orchestral drums, meaning TcPron had to do some serious work to make it all flow together.

TcPron has also performed drum covers of other Destiny songs, which you can see on his YouTube page.

Next up for Destiny the game is a new update that will, among other things, make some Strikes easier. In addition, developer Bungie will announce the release date for Destiny's next expansion, House of Wolves, sometime later this month.

Play Star Wars: Battlefront Next Week at an EA Playtest

By Chris Pereira on Apr 03, 2015 09:15 pm

A select number of people will have the opportunity to play the new Star Wars: Battlefront in a week's time, publisher Electronic Arts has announced.

Two EA studios, EA Canada and EA Redwood Shores, will be hosting playtests for the upcoming game on Friday, April 10. In order to attend, you'll need to register online either here for EA Canada, or here for Redwood Shores. You'll of course also need to be in the area--Burnaby, British Columbia or Redwood City, CA--next Friday.

Those who are selected will be notified via email. Attendees will need to a sign a non-disclosure agreement and won't be allowed to record any gameplay footage. On the bright side, the sessions will last anywhere from three to four hours, and participants will get two free EA games of their choice.

Barring anyone who decides to break the NDA, we won't be hearing any details out of these playtests next week. However, we will be seeing Battlefront's debut trailer later this month, when EA shares it during the Star Wars Celebration event on April 17.

Battlefront is being developed by Battlefield maker DICE, which recently said it had made "so much progress over the last couple of weeks." An exact release date has not yet been announced, but we do know it's slated to come to Xbox One, PS4, and PC this holiday.

Buy The Evil Within PS4/Xbox One for $20

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 03, 2015 08:51 pm

Amazon is currently offering one of the best deals we've ever seen for the console version of Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami's new horror game, The Evil Within. The online retailer is selling the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One disc-based versions of the game for just $20.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions, meanwhile, are currently going for $30.

PC gamers can pick up a digital copy of the The Evil Within for just $13.86. This deal isn't new, however, as the game has been available at that low price before.

There's no indication as to when the deal might end, so if you're interested, you may want to act quickly.

The Evil Within, developed by Mikami and his Tango Gameworks studio in Japan, launched in October 2014 and was published by Bethesda. The game's next DLC expansion, the second installment in a two-part series--called The Consequence--launches later this month.

Looking for more gaming deals? Check back later today for GameSpot's full roundup of the day's best offers across all major platforms.

Amazon prices are accurate as of publishing, but can fluctuate occasionally throughout the day.

GameSpot's gaming deals posts always highlight the best deals we can find regardless of retailer. Mortal Kombat X Has Much Better Netcode Than MK9, Ed Boon Says

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 03, 2015 08:04 pm

Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon acknowledges in a new interview that the netcode for the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot and 2013's Injustice: Gods Among Us could have been better. Boon said developer NetherRealm has learned from these challenges and this month's Mortal Kombat X will bear that out with a smoother, better overall online experience.

He says in an interview with AngryJoe that NetherRealm holds "post-mortem" internal discussions after every new release to talk about what could have been done better. "And certainly, you can never not improve with online," he said.

Asked if he could guarantee that Mortal Kombat X's netcode would be improved over the studio's other recent games, Boon said, "Oh yeah. It's going to be improved over MK9, certainly even improved over Injustice. We really are focusing a lot."

NetherRealm is also looking to improve its general messaging with Mortal Kombat X as it relates to error messages players may, unfortunately, encounter online. While the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot displayed a generic "Connection Lost" screen that never told you why that happened, Mortal Kombat X will feature a more detailed message that lets you know exactly why things went wrong.

What's more, Boon said NetherRealm has implemented new back-end online features that should make Mortal Kombat X do a better job of ensuring that players with good connections are matched together instead of other scenarios. You can watch the full AngryJoe interview here.

The Mortal Kombat X release date is April 14 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions, however, have been delayed.

For lots more on Mortal Kombat X and the Mortal Kombat franchise in general, check out GameSpot's wide-ranging interview with Boon.
