New Doctor Who Is A Woman, For The First Time Ever

By Anonymous on Jul 16, 2017 11:42 pm

The next Doctor's identity has finally been revealed; for the first time ever, The Doctor will be female. Broadchurch star Jodie Whittaker will take on the role of the 13th Doctor in the forthcoming season debuting this Christmas.

Whittaker will be the next Time Lord after 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi, who announced his departure from the show in January. The BBC has kept her identity under lock and key until today's announcement via Twitter.

"I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet," Whittaker told BBC. "It's more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can't wait."

Broadchurch writer Chris Chibinall will join Whittaker as this season's showrunner, replacing long-time writer Steven Moffat. Right now, we don't have many details on what Whittaker's journey will look like, but we do have a sneak peek at this year's Christmas special.

New Star Wars: The Last Jedi Posters Are Dark And Bloody

By Anonymous on Jul 16, 2017 04:16 am

A number of new posters for Star Wars: The Last Jedi have been released. The new images made their debut at Disney's D23 event, and show Rey, Leia, Luke, Finn, Kylo Renn, and Poe Dameron clad in red versions of their costumes.

In each poster, the red looks like a smudged bloodstain, perhaps to invoke the tone of the film. Like The Empire Strikes Back--the second movie in the original Star Wars trilogy--The Last Jedi is expected to be a much darker movie than its predecessor, The Force Awakens.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Will Release 2018, Watch Video Of New Toy Story World

By Anonymous on Jul 16, 2017 02:36 am

Today at Disney's D23 expo, the company showed off a little bit more Kingdom Hearts 3, the result of of its collaboration with developer Square Enix, and finally confirmed a release timeframe. While we don't know what month, Kingdom Hearts 3 will release sometime in 2018.

Square showed an in-depth combat and boss trailer just before E3 earlier this year, but this new video goes even deeper, revealing a new world to explore in the game based on the Toy Story franchise. You can check it out above (soon), including a short scene between Sora and Woody, Buzz, and a few other Toy Story mainstays. The combat isn't limited to just the main house from the movies either, as the game heads outdoors to battle the Heartless on a journey to the movie's toy store.

Kingdom Hearts 3 was officially confirmed at E3 2013, and the game follows the winding story of Sora and Rikku as they traverse a world were Mickey Mouse is king. And while the antagonistic Heartless will return, the game will visit locales based on Tangled and Big Hero 6 that haven't been featurend in the series before.

PS4 Exclusive Spider-Man Gameplay, Plot Details Revealed

By Anonymous on Jul 16, 2017 02:28 am

We got a more in-depth look today at the plot of Spider-Man and learned more about its open-world gameplay. The PS4-exclusive action game from developer Insomniac was shown off at Disney's D23 Expo, and the studio released the behind-the-scenes video above.

Spider-Man will feature a "new universe and a new story," according to the developers. The video says the game will show how Spider-Man and Peter Parker's worlds collide. Spider-Man is older in this game, 23 years old, "an athlete in his prime" who's more comfortable with his powers. The developers also said the game is inspired by the Ultimate Spider-Man comic series.

The open-world setting will let players fully interact with environments around them, using objects to battle your enemies. Gameplay has improved since the game was revealed at E3, according to Insomniac. Web swinging has been improved, making it easier to "gain swing." Combat has also evolved.

We got our first look at Spider-Man's gameplay at E3 2017. Check out the earlier gameplay video here. Insomniac says its open world will be much larger than that of one of its previous games, Sunset Overdrive. There's no release date at this time, but the game is confirmed for 2018.

New Marvel Game Lets You Play As Hulk, Rocket Raccoon In VR

By Anonymous on Jul 16, 2017 02:20 am

Marvel Powers United VR is a new virtual reality project in the works for Oculus VR. Revealed during a D23 exposition gaming panel, the trailer starts off with actors pretending to play the game before transitioning into actual gameplay. You can check it out above.

The game is being jointly developed by Marvel, Sanzaru, and Oculus Studios. Only three three playable characters were revealed, and the game supports three-player simultaneous co-op. The dog-like Lockjaw was summoned near the end, which means there'll likely be other Inhuman cameos, but here are the characters we know:

  • Hulk -- A melee-focused fighter.
  • Rocket Raccoon -- A dual-wielding shooter character
  • Captain Marvel -- Looks to combine both melee and ranged elements.

PR for the game stated that it will have: "more than a dozen playable characters ripped from the pages of your favorite comics." The Oculus-exclusive game does not currently have a release date, but we'll have hands-on impressions of the title soon!

Star Wars Experiences Coming To Disney's New Augmented-Reality Headset

By Anonymous on Jul 16, 2017 02:06 am

At D23 today, Disney announced that it's making an augmented reality headset with help from hardware manufacturer Lenovo. It's designed specifically with Star Wars experiences in mind.

During its Level Up video game panel, Disney revealed the headset alongside some footage from mini-games and experiences it's making for it. Star Wars: Jedi Challenges, as the collection is called, includes holochess and, as you might expect, a game that lets you wield a lightsaber. Check out the reveal video above.

There's no word yet on when the headset will launch, but you can keep an eye on its website here. You can also sign up there for more information from Disney on how to try it out.

Disney is the latest in a number of large companies making moves into augmented reality. Recently, Apple announced its own AR efforts, and it'll be releasing a development kit called ARKit for Apple devices soon.

During the panel Disney also revealed new footage from Star Wars: Battlefront II's single-player campaign. You can see the behind-the-scenes video here.

Check Out Star Wars: Battlefront 2's New Behind The Scenes Single-Player Video

By Anonymous on Jul 16, 2017 01:50 am

Disney's big D23 event is happening all of this weekend, celebrating all of Disney's films and properties. It's a good weekend for gamers, too: during its Level Up livestream today, the company showed off some new footage of Star Wars: Battlefront II in a video focused on its single-player campaign.

The video features interviews with the developers and cast, who discuss the game's story. Battlefront II will feature an entirely new Star Wars story focusing on a character named Iden Versio. The new video reveals a lot about how developers DICE and EA Motive are forming a unique story set within a universe as popular and as well-known as Star Wars. Take a look at the video above.

The video also shows off some new footage of a few big moments from the game, including huge space battles and some of the game's environments.

Star Wars: Battlefront II launches on November 17 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It'll feature a full single-player campaign, and it will have an open beta test this October. You can see more footage from E3 2017 here.

After Casting Problems, Disney Reveals Aladdin's Main Actors

By Anonymous on Jul 16, 2017 01:32 am

Disney has officially unveiled its central cast for Guy Ritchie's live-action adaptation of the classic animated film Aladdin. At the D23 Expo, the studio revealed who will play Aladdin, Jasmine, and the Genie:

  • Aladdin -- Mena Massoud (Jack Ryan)
  • Jasmine -- Naomi Scott (Power Rangers)
  • The Genie -- Will Smith

The news officially confirms the rumors that Will Smith will step into the role so famously played by Robin Williams in 1992.

The announcement comes after reports that the film was having a lot of trouble casting its lead role. While the studio reportedly had several actresses in mind for Jasmine (including the winner Naomi Scott), Disney apparently struggled to cast Aladdin.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio was looking for an actor in his 20s, who could sing and dance and was of "Middle-Eastern or Indian descent," and it spent months screen testing actors with no success. With today's news, it's confirmed Canadian actor Mena Massoud will play the role.

There's still no release date for Aladdin, but we are following the story and will update as soon as a date is revealed. GameSpot is covering D23 all weekend, so stay tuned for more Disney, Marvel, and potentially Star Wars news.

Watch First Trailer For Disney's New A Wrinkle In Time Movie

By Anonymous on Jul 16, 2017 12:42 am

The Disney film adaption of author Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time received its first trailer today during Disney's D23 conference. The original sci-fi story dates back to the 1960s, but this is obviously a much more modern take on the children's space-bending classic.

The film is directed by Ana DuVernay, best known for the 2014 drama Selma, and the film's central protagonist, Meg Murray, will be played by Storm Reid (12 Years a Slave). Other cast highlights include Oprah Winfrey, Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon, Zach Galifianakis, and Mindy Kaling. The film is set to release on March 9 next year.

You might not know that Disney also made the book into a TV film back in 2003 (though it wasn't broadcast until 2004).

We'll be covering D23 live all weekend, so stay tuned for even more Disney, Marvel, and potentially Star-Wars news.
