DC's Doomsday Clock Art Teases Universe Altering Crossover With Watchmen

By Mat Elfring on Jul 23, 2017 10:08 pm

DC Comics has another large-scale event coming this fall, and for the first time, aspects of Alan Moore's iconic story The Watchmen will be combining with the DC Universe in Doomsday Clock. During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, writer Geoff Johns showed off some interior art for the book and vaguely discussed the story.

No Caption Provided

Ever since Watchmen's Dr. Manhattan appeared at the end of DC's Rebirth one-shot, back in June 2016, fans have been wanting answers. Rebirth relaunched the DC by combining elements of the New 52 line with Pre-Flashpoint material. A task this large could be daunting, but during a panel for the event at Comic-Con, writer Geoff Johns seemed up for the challenge.

While Doomsday Clock seemed to be the highlight of the panel, Johns was relatively tight-lipped about the event. "You'll know in the first page of the first issue, you'll know exactly what the story's about" Johns said during the panel.

The logo for the event mixes the Doomsday Clock with the Superman emblem. Johns said that the Man of Steel is the story but did not go much deeper into detail. Moving forward, Johns mentioned some more elements about the upcoming event: "I love seeing the smartest man from one world talking to the smartest man from another. And the smartest man from this world, from DC, is Lex Luthor. And that's all I'll say." Those familiar with Watchmen will know the smartest man on that world is Ozymandias. However, there is no confirmation about whether that character will appear in Doomsday Clock as of yet.

Those watching the panel were treated to some early interior artwork by Gary Frank and Brad Anderson, which you can check out below.

Doomsday Clock will come out in November and run for 12-issues. The events within the book take place one year after what's currently happening in DC books, but it's all in continuity. There are planned breaks for the mini-series in both March and August as well.

This new event follows up Batman: Metal, and if back-to-back events seems like a little bit too much, Metal's writer Scott Snyder assured readers not to worry about event fatigue: "You can read one or the other or both and be fine either way," Snyder told GameSpot. "They're both in the real continuity of the present day DC Universe." The stories don't weave into each other nor do they directly lead into each other. In the past, there have been times where DC had one event lead into another, which caused readers to lose interest altogether.

Doomsday Clock comes out on Wednesday, November 22.

Overwatch Devs Explain Why Terry Crews Isn't Doomfist's Voice (And Other Inside Stories)

By Justin Haywald on Jul 23, 2017 09:01 pm

Overwatch, and Blizzard in general, had a huge presence at this year's Comic-Con. Hearthstone led an ice cream social with visits from the Lich King and Jessica Nigiri and the Blizzard merch booth was full of new stuff (like that $450 D.Va statue), but it was Doomfist who grabbed the most attention. Blizzard recently pushed the character out to the test realm on PC, and the company sponsored the first-ever Doomfist cosplay with an elaborate, incredibly impressive costume. The devs even devoted an entire panel to discussing how Doomfist was created. But one important question was left hanging after the panel: Why didn't Terry Crews end up voicing the long-teased character?

Terry Crews is a bombastic, larger-than-life figure, and just one month ago it seemed like a foregone conclusion that he would voice the one Blizzard character with a name to out-badass Garrosh Hellscream. Crews talked about visiting Blizzard, he put out a public audition tape for the role, and he even got Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's endorsement. But the part ended up going to veteran actor and director Sahr Ngaujah.

Crews is still front of mind for many fans, and although he didn't come up during the Q&A portion of the panel, his name was yelled out more than once by a few members of the audience. So, during our follow-up conversation, we asked Blizzard's devs why, after so much hype, Crews didn't end up as Doomfist. Blizzard senior designer Michael Chu explained, "We love Terry. Terry's awesome. He came and visited us. We had a great time. But when we were looking for Doomfist, we were looking for something very specific given his role in the game and everything. When we were early in the audition process, we heard Sahr, who's the actor who plays Doomfist, and he just blew us away immediately. Once we heard his voice, it was like, 'Holy crap. That's Doomfist.'" Chu particularly praised the number of "flavors" Sahr is able to bring to the role, and Sahr's ability to, "...bring all these different aspects of the character to life.

While that doesn't rule out the possibility of Crews taking on another role in the future, it does explain why he might not have been the best fit for what Blizzard has planned with Doomfist.

The after-panel discussion also turned to other topics that were only briefly touched on in the presentation, like the possibility of a Blizzard fighting game. During his presentation, Overwatch lead designer Geoff Goodman called Doomfist, with his unique, melee-focused combat, an "ode to the fighting genre," and the concept art for the character was a direct homage to fighting game art. But could that ever lead to something more?

"I was working on World of Warcraft originally, when WoW was shipped," Goodman said, "and I remember the questions then in a lot of interviews were like, 'Well, you guys are like a RTS company. How are you gonna make an MMO?' Then we're working Overwatch, and then when we shoot Overwatch, it's like, 'Well, you guys are the MMO company. How are you gonna make an FPS?' It's just sort of funny. It just goes to show, we can do these genres. We play the games so much. We love these games so much. Who knows? Maybe someday we'll see a fighting game. That'd be sweet." Of course, this doesn't mean that Blizzard is gearing up to enter yet another new genre, but the design team sounds like it's always up for a new challenge.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7Gallery image 8Gallery image 9Gallery image 10

But the current challenge is making sure that Doomfist fits into the full game. We asked the developers what the main takeaway from Doomfist's run on the PC public test realm has been, and the response was immediate: "Bugs. Lots of bugs."

Goodman explained, "We fixed pretty much all of them. It was heads down for a while and lots of, 'Oh, my God. We're not gonna make this deadline.' It was pretty much all hands on deck to fix a lot of bugs. He's a complicated character. He's not just like a guy with a gun who runs around and shoots all of the characters. Doomfist has so many inner working parts and very complicated mechanics, so it lent itself, unfortunately, really well to bugs."

But sometimes those bugs can lead to interesting features. According to Goodman, there was a persistent bug in PTR that, after he removed it, he received feedback from players in the forums that they actually thought the mechanic it had inadvertently introduced was fun. He was able to reintroduce the slightly modified "bug" so that, "When you're doing the rocket punch, you can hit space and cancel it out and leave a little bit of extra distance."

Finally, and perhaps the most surprising moment of the Overewatch panel, was the raucous reaction from the audience after two different fans asked when the next healer character would be added to the game. Were the devs surprised? Goodman answered, "I don't know. I was surprised that it came back-to-back with multiple people." He laughed, adding, "I wasn't expecting that." But he went on to say, "Adding another hero would be awesome. There's so much potential, especially healing in a game like Overwatch, because it's a very unique mechanic...Ana is so different than any other healers, and we have a bunch of prototypes in place playing with different mechanics. There are certainly healers in the prototype mix, so it'd be fun to maybe come up with them pretty soon, hopefully."

While some of the devs answers raise even more questions, they made it a point to get across that they actively listen to their players. As Doomfist heads into the full game on July 27, you can be sure Blizzard devs will be on forums and social media answering questions, and just generally seeing what peoples reactions to the new character are. And maybe if people keep yelling out in panels about wanting Terry Crews in the game, that could eventually happen too.

Pokemon Go's Next Legendary Revealed, And It's A Fan Favorite

By Tamoor Hussain on Jul 23, 2017 07:06 pm

[Update] Legendary Pokemon Articuno and Lugia are available in Raid Battles everywhere now. Pokemon Go developer Niantic has also made a number of rewards available to players until Monday, July 24, at 5:00 PM PDT as a "thanks to the Trainers around the world who banded together to catch millions of Pokemon during the Challenge Windows." The rewards include the following:

  • Double Stardust
  • Double Candy
  • Double XP
  • Increased Pokemon encounters
  • Reduced hatching distance
  • Reduced buddy distance

[Original story continues below]

Legendary Pokemon Articuno will be added to Pokemon Go, following the success of Team Mystic at Pokemon Go Fest. You can watch the announcement of Articuno's arrival in the video below.

During the event players were tasked with teaming up to defeat a Legendary monster that showed up at Grant Park in Chicago, where Pokemon Go Fest is being held. Team Mystic proved to be victorious and, as a result, the flying ice type from the Kanto region will make its way to game in the future.

During Pokemon Go Fest it was also confirmed that Lugia, another Legendary, will be activated in Raid Battles within the next 48 hours; Articuno's arrival will follow Lugia's. Another Legendary, Ho-oh, is also expected in the future.

Although Team Mystic won here, Zapdos, which is tied to Team Instinct, and Moltres, which is represented by Team Valor, will also make it into the game in the future. Niantic hasn't said when, however.

Those that attended Pokemon Go Fest found themselves unable to actually play the game due to a combination of server and network issues. To make up for this, Pokemon Go developer Niantic has said it will offer full ticket refunds to all that attended the fan event, as well as $100 in PokeCoins, among other gifts.

"Today at Pokemon Go Fest in Chicago, technical issues created problems for a large number of players attending the event," Niantic said in an official statement. "From everyone at Niantic, we apologize to all of the Trainers who came out to Pokemon Go Fest today. Although we were able to solve many of the technical issues, we were not able to offer every attendee a great experience."

It went on to detail how it will compensate attendees:

  • All registered attendees will soon receive an email with instructions on how to receive a full refund for the cost of their ticket. These instructions will be sent to the email addresses associated with your Pokemon Go account.
  • All registered attendees will receive $100 in PokeCoins in their Pokemon GO account.
  • Special Pokemon, Eggs, and check-in PokeStops appearing during Pokemon Go Fest have had their range increased to a two mile radius surrounding Grant Park through Monday morning, July 24. These Pokemon and Eggs will only be visible to Pokemon Go Fest attendees who validated the QR code they received when they entered Pokemon Go Fest. Attendees who were unable to validate their QR code during the event can do so through the special PokeStops through Monday morning.
  • All registered attendees will have the Legendary Pokemon, Lugia, added to their account

Ahead of Pokemon Go Fest, a new update for the game was rolled out. This includes some bug fixes along with some refinements and new features, including the ability to give berries to a Pokemon you've left at a Gym without actually visiting it.

In Japan, Pokemon Go players can now purchase an official ring accessory. It's a handheld trinket that is designed to be a different way of holding the Pokemon Go Plus device. As of yet, Niantic has not confirmed whether the ring will be available outside of Japan, but previous accessories such as the Pokemon Go Plus was available in multiple territories.

New Rick And Morty Trailer Teases Season 3 Mad Max Tribute

By Justin Haywald on Jul 23, 2017 05:30 pm

I want to watch an entire documentary on the making of a Rick and Morty episode. Until that happens, there's a tounge-in-cheek teaser trailer for season 3 of the show embedded above to help fill that longing.

Showing off scenes from the second episode of Rick and Morty titled Wasteland, both the episode and the trailer's behind-the-scenes style clearly riff on last year's blockbuster success, Mad Max: Fury Road. But you don't need to read my description of it; just watch the video.

Season 3 debuted a little earlier than fans expected this year, kicking off with an April Fool's "gag" wherein the entire first episode was posted online. That was followed by the reveal of the actual premiere date: the show will officially come back to Cartoon Network on July 30. However, whether Rick will be successful in his journey to get Szechuan Sauce back in McDonalds restaurants remains to be seen.

The full trailer for the upcoming Marvel Netflix superhero team-up The Defenders was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, and now the first clip has been released. It features the show's villains--Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver) and Madame Gao (Wai Ching Ho)--making some evil plans on a park bench. Check it out above.

In related news, a second season of the poorly-received Iron Fist was also confirmed at SDCC on Saturday. Beyond all of this, a third season of Daredevil and second for both Jessica Jones and Luke Cage are also in the works, as is a new Punisher series.

Star Trek: Discovery Trailer Shows More Of The Crew And Klingons

By Patrick Faller on Jul 23, 2017 08:49 am

Trekkies and newcomers to the series just got a more in-depth look at the latest entry into the Star Trek series. Star Trek: Discovery is coming on CBS All Access in September, and a substantial trailer was released at a Comic-Con showing more of the crew and the Klingons. You check out the trailer above.

Star Trek: Discovery is set before the original '60s series. It focuses on the story of lieutenant Michael Burnham (played by Sonequa Martin-Green) and what appears to be a series of fiery battles between Starfleet and the Klingons. Last year, Showrunner Bryan Fuller spoke at the Television Critics Association conference and said he and his team were keen to break with Star Trek tradition.

"The story that's fascinating for me now is not from the captain's perspective," he said, via Polygon. "We've seen six series from the captain's point of view and we wanted to do something different." Fuller also said he was committed to diversity in casting, and choosing a female lead character was an important move for him.

No Caption Provided

"Star Trek started with a wonderful diversity in its cast," he said. "Infinite diversity in infinite combinations, as Spock would say. We are absolutely continuing that tradition. We'll probably have some more aliens than usual in our cast, too." The show also stars Michelle Yeoh, Jason Isaacs, Chris Obi, and Doug Jones.

Star Trek: Discovery's release date had been delayed in the past, but the show will now premiere September 24 on CBS in the US and CraveTV in Canada. Outside of the two countries, Netflix will stream the show. For more news and features from Comic-Con 2017 check out GameSpot's full coverage.

Captain Marvel Movie's Era And Enemies Revealed At Comic-Con 2017

By Alex Newhouse on Jul 23, 2017 08:15 am

We still haven't seen much of Captain Marvel, but today Marvel gave us a few more details about the movie. At San Diego Comic-Con, the company announced that it'll take place in the 1990s, and Captain Marvel will be facing off against a classic foe: Skrulls.

We now know that Captain Marvel will act as a prequel to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking place during the '90s. We don't have any other information on the setting, but we're guessing that there'll be a lot of throwback references for fans who grew up during the decade.

Perhaps the biggest reveal, though, was that she'll be battling the Skrulls, a species of extraterrestrial shapeshifters. The Skrulls were revealed in a couple pieces of concept art that Marvel showed at its panel today; you can see it above, courtesy of Adam Hlavac. Interestingly, Skrulls have traditionally shown up in Fantastic Four comics, and so their movie rights are co-owned by Fox and Marvel.

In addition, Marvel announced that Samuel L. Jackson will once again be playing Nick Fury. And, since it's set in the 1990s, Fury has both eyes.

Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) and is set for release on March 8, 2019.

Black Panther Receives A Cool New Poster At Comic-Con 2017

By Alex Newhouse on Jul 23, 2017 08:07 am

Black Panther was the final event at Marvel's big San Diego Comic-Con panel tonight, and to cap it off the company released a new poster for the film. Although we don't yet get to see any of the footage Marvel showed at the panel, the poster is still pretty cool.

It shows the superhero standing atop a massive stone panther. In the background, a variety of ships fly toward a city that appears a little worse for wear. Fires burn among the skyscrapers, while a smoke cloud hangs over the whole metropolis. Check it out:

No Caption Provided

Marvel gave Hall H attendees a great show, revealing a scene and a trailer. According to attendees--and a handheld video shared by Fandango--the reveals were exciting enough to spark a standing ovation.

Although there's no new footage for the public to see, you can watch Black Panther's first trailer here. The movie is directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed). Chadwick Boseman plays the superhero, and its cast includes Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis. It hits theaters on February 16, 2018.

Marvel's Next Ant-Man Movie Casts Former Catwoman As The Original Wasp

By Randolph Ramsay on Jul 23, 2017 07:59 am

Marvel's jam-packed Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con had plenty of exciting announcements, including new trailers for both Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther, but there was also some significant casting news for another upcoming Marvel film, Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Michelle Pfeiffer, who memorably played Catwoman in the '90s film Batman Returns, is shifting to another comic cinematic universe, and has been cast at Janet van Dyne in the upcoming Ant-Man sequel. In the comics world, Janet van Dyne was the original Wasp, a founding member of the Avengers and wife to Hank Pym (who was the original Ant-Man).

The Wasp suit as shown in the first Ant-Man film.
The Wasp suit as shown in the first Ant-Man film.

In the 2015 Ant-Man film, Hank Pym was played by Michael Douglas, and was shown as the original Ant-Man before Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) was "chosen" to wear the shrinking suit. Janet appeared as the Wasp in the film (although with her mask on) through a flashback that showed her disappearing into the subatomic quantum realm after a failed mission. At the end of the film, Hank's daughter, Hope van Dyne (played by Evangeline Lilly), was given the original Wasp suit, and it's clearly hinted that she would take on the mantle of the superhero in the film's sequel.

Pfeiffer wasn't the only new cast member revealed for Ant-Man and the Wasp. The Matrix's Laurence Fishburne was announced to play the role of Bill Foster, who in the comics was known as Black Goliath/Giant Man. Hannah John-Kamen was also confirmed as character named Ghost, while Fresh Off The Boat's Randall Park will play Agent Jimmy Woo.

Thor: Ragnarok's New Poster Looks Like That Psychedelic Album You Listened To In High School

By Alex Newhouse on Jul 23, 2017 07:33 am

Thor: Ragnarok's latest trailer just dropped, and hot on its heels is a pretty awesome new poster for the film. Marvel revealed the poster on Twitter just after giving fans another look at the movie.

The poster looks like a psychedelic rock album. It's pretty trippy, if we're being honest, showing the characters superimposed on top of one another. The Hulk looms over them all, a grimace on his face and a helmet on his head. Check it out:

No Caption Provided

It's a striking image, to be sure, one that we could definitely see hanging on a 1970s dorm-room wall between Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead album covers. There's a lot going on in it, which fits with the new, action-packed trailer that features everything from the Hulk fighting a wolf (presumably Fenris Wolf) to Loki and Thor teaming up.

Earlier at SDCC, we saw some of Thor: Ragnarok's new, high-end collectibles, and you can check out an image gallery of them here. Be sure to keep an eye on GameSpot, because we'll be reporting on all the Marvel news coming out of SDCC. Thor: Ragnarok is due to be released on November 3, 2017.

The Flash Movie Will Be Called Flashpoint

By Patrick Faller on Jul 23, 2017 07:09 am

The Flash solo movie has a name, and it's Flashpoint. Warner Bros. unveiled the title today at San Diego Comic-Con, and it's of big significance to fans of the series.

Flashpoint is a reference to the 2011 Flash crossover comic series that put Barry Allen, The Flash, in a very different universe than the original storyline. Barry travels back in time to prevent his mother's murder, and in doing so changes the DC universe timeline and many of the key heroes and villains in it. Warner Bros. isn't revealing any more details on the plot of the film, but the name certainly may give a hint.

No Caption Provided

The Flash film has experienced many production setbacks. Last year, the film lost its director Seth Grahame-Smith due to "creative differences." His replacement, Rick Famuyiwa, quit several months later, also due to "creative differences." Warner Bros. then hired Joby Harold to rewrite the entire script, according to Variety. The studio is reportedly eyeing Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back to the Future) and Matthew Vaughn (Snatch, Kingsman) as "top choices" for director.

There's no word as to when Flashpoint will release, but follow GameSpot Universe for any updates on the film as soon as they come out. For the latest news from Comic-Con, follow GameSpot's full coverage.

Watch Thor: Ragnarok's Awesome New Trailer Here

By Alex Newhouse on Jul 23, 2017 07:05 am

Marvel's Comic-Con 2017 panel is happening now, and the company just showed off the latest trailer for Thor: Ragnarok.

You can check out the action-packed trailer above; it's a pretty awesome look at the film. We even catch a glimpse of Loki and Thor cooperating to stave off waves of enemies.

The video also shows the Hulk wrestling with a massive wolf. The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) will feature prominently in the film, as Thor (Chris Hemsworth) must battle him in a gladiatorial fight. But in spite of this, Ruffalo has said in the past that he expects the film to be a "buddy movie" between Thor and Hulk.

Earlier at SDCC, we were able to get a good look at some of Thor: Ragnarok's new, high-end collectibles, and you can see them here. In addition, you can check out the film's first trailer here. Westworld Season 2 Trailer Debuts At Comic-Con

By Patrick Faller on Jul 23, 2017 06:14 am

HBO's hit show Westworld's second season is many months away, but we're getting a first a look at what's in store in the dark sci-fi saga. Today, a new trailer premiered at Comic-Con in San Diego and you can check it out above.

The series' creators said the second season will be much more ambitious than the first, with more drama and higher stakes. "We always knew that we wanted the stakes and the scope to increase dramatically and that means the scale of production increases as well," said writer and creator Jonathan Nolan last month (via Gamesradar). "We have an amazingly talented group of writers, directors, and crew coming back and gearing up for what I think and what I hope will prove to be a season twice as ambitious as the first one."

In an interview with Variety, Nolan also spoke in detail about Season 1, and how Season 2 will go deeper in answering some of the big questions in Westworld. You can read more of his comments here and, for those who are worried about Season 1 spoilers, you will have to click before anything is revealed that could possibly spoil the plot for you.

Gotham Season 4's Brutal First Trailer Shows Bruce Wayne Killing Someone

By Alex Newhouse on Jul 23, 2017 05:52 am

Fox's Batman prequel show Gotham got renewed for a fourth season earlier this year, and today we got a first look at what's in store for James Gordon and Bruce Wayne. From the trailer released at San Diego Comic-Con, it appears that Season 4 will continue showing the brutality of Gotham City, as well as bring Bruce Wayne and Ra's al Ghul together.

The long video starts with a Season 3 highlight reel and moves into clips from Season 4. We see Bruce Wayne actually having to kill someone--in spite of his well-known oath to never take a life. Check it out above.

At the very end of the video, the haunting, modified tones of the villain Scarecrow are heard. It seems that Scarecrow will play a role in Gotham. It also revealed Crystal Reed (Teen Wolf) is joining the cast as Sofia Falcone.

The new season premieres on Thursday, September 28 at 8 PM ET on Fox.

Watch Stranger Things Season 2's First Trailer Here

By Alex Newhouse on Jul 23, 2017 04:47 am

Stranger Things was extremely popular when it was first released on Netflix last year, becoming one of 2016's most acclaimed shows. Today, we finally got a good look at its upcoming second season.

At San Diego Comic-Con, the first trailer for Stranger Things Season 2 was shown off, and it gives us a glimpse at what we can expect. Things have changed in Hawkins, Indiana, since the events of the first season. "Nothing's going to go back to the way that it was," the narrator of the trailer states.

Not surprisingly, the trailer is equal parts spooky, suspenseful, and straight out of the 1980s. And, of course, any trailer called "Thriller" has to feature some tunes from Michael Jackson. You can see the video above.

"It's 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Indiana are still reeling from the horrors of the demogorgon and the secrets of Hawkins Lab," the video's description reads. "Will Byers has been rescued from the Upside Down but a bigger, sinister entity still threatens those who survived."

A first teaser was screened during the Super Bowl in January, which you can see here. Stranger Things Season 2 hits Netflix in October. Earlier this year, actor David Harbour--who plays Jim Hopper--said that the new season will be "fun, dark, and complex."

See Thor: Ragnarok's Ultra-Detailed Collectibles Here

By Mat Elfring on Jul 23, 2017 03:58 am

Thor: Ragnarok will be hitting theaters before we know it, and the film will introduce old friends and some new faces. The Sideshow Collectibles booth gave fans a closer look at the characters with a preview of the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok Hot Toys line.

Revealed at Comic-Con were the newest additions to the Hot Toy Line, based on the likenesses of the heroes and villains in Ragnarok. There are two versions of Thor, one with him wrapped in chains--which we saw early on in the first trailer--and one from the scene where he is about to fight Hulk. Doctor Strange gets the Hot Toys treatment, as the character will also be featured in the third Thor film. In addition, Loki, Hela, and Valkyrie will be available as well.

However, the one figure that literally stood above the rest was Hulk, which towered over the other figures in the line. We caught a glimpse of this Gladiator Hulk during the first trailer for Ragnarok. The look of the character is based on the critically acclaimed comic Planet Hulk by writer Greg Pak and artists Carlo Pagulayan.

Hot Toys are highly-detailed figures that look incredibly realistic and use the actor's likeness from the films they're based on. Of course, with that much time and effort put into the craftsmanship of the toy, it comes at a high price. On average, each of the Hot Toys costs around $200.

Classic X-Men Characters Featured In New Trailer For TV Spinoff The Gifted

By Patrick Faller on Jul 23, 2017 03:55 am

We got a big look at The Gifted, a new TV series coming soon on FOX that's sure to appeal to X-Men fans. A new trailer was revealed at Comic-Con in San Diego, and this time some classic X-Men characters are joining the battle.

The Marvel/FOX show will expand on the X-Men universe, but won't overlap with any of the film series. "The X-Men, the brotherhood, we don't even know if they exist anymore," says one character in the trailer. The series centers around the Strucker family escaping the government after officials discover their children are mutants.

Young mutants Lauren and Andy then sync up with an "underground network of mutants and must fight to survive," said FOX, and are aided by their mother (played by Amy Acker) and their mutant hunter-turned protector father (True Blood's Stephen Moyer) along the way.

We see some classic X-Men characters pop up in this trailer, too. It appears Thunderbird, Polaris, and Blink join the fight to protect the Struckers, and a new mutant named Eclipse is introduced as well.

The Gifted makes its debut on FOX on October 2, and is written by Burn Notice's Matt Nix and directed by X-Men series director and producer Bryan Singer. You can see the first teaser trailer for The Gifted here, and for the latest news from Comic-Con 2017 check out GameSpot's full coverage.

Watch Robot Chicken's Insane Season 9 Trailer

By Alex Newhouse on Jul 23, 2017 03:13 am

Adult Swim's ridiculous stop-motion sketch comedy show, Robot Chicken, is coming back for a ninth season. At San Diego Comic-Con, we got a first glimpse at what's in store.

Adult Swim released a trailer for Season 9 that's full of references, satire, and violence. If you've watched any of Robot Chicken in the past, you'll know what to expect. A large part of the trailer shows a parody of Mad Max: Fury Road, another part features the Pokemon Charizard, and another is a Star Wars satire. Check it out above.

Robot Chicken is the bizarre creation of actor Seth Green (Family Guy) and screenwriter and director Matthew Senreich. There's no word yet on when, exactly, Season 9 is coming; past seasons haven't followed much of a release pattern. Adult Swim says it's coming soon--when it was announced earlier this year, the network stated that the season would air this fall.

Matthew Senreich and his Robot Chicken co-writers were revealed back in 2015 to be writing the screenplay for Ubisoft's stop-motion Rabbids film. However, the status of this project is uncertain: Ubisoft hasn't spoken about it in recent months.

Hey Arnold Movie Will Wrap Up The Classic Series, Check Out This Sneak Peek

By Patrick Faller on Jul 23, 2017 02:32 am

Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie will no doubt be essential viewing for fans of the series. According to Nickelodeon, the upcoming TV movie will "resolve unanswered questions and plotlines–-including Arnold finally getting answers about the whereabouts of his missing parents." At San Diego Comic-Con, we got a sneak peak at the movie in the trailer above.

The video showcases the movie's cast (with 19 of the original voice actors from the series reprising their roles) as they explain all the great things Arnold has done for him and why he should "win the trip to San Lorenzo." It's been 13 years since the series ended, and the new movie will pick up where it left off.

"Original cast members will give new life to Helga, a complicated and cynical girl who puts up a mean front, but is full of extreme emotions; Phoebe, Helga's confidante and loyal best friend; Harold, a former bully with a tough exterior and soft interior; Rhonda, a fashionista who comes from a preppy and prestigious family; and Olga, Helga's beautiful, intelligent and friendly older sister; as well as the other colorful characters," said Nickelodeon.

There's also a nod to Arnold's parents at the end of the sneak peak video. Nickelodeon says fans can expect Arnold to finally get some answers as to their mysterious disappearance in the film. The two-hour Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie will air on TV on Nickelodeon later this year.

New Justice League Movie Trailer Unites DC's Most Iconic Heroes

By Tamoor Hussain on Jul 23, 2017 01:39 am

Warner Bros. and DC have released a four-minute trailer for Justice League, the upcoming feature film that will bring its most iconic heroes together in one movie. The trailer, which you can watch above, shows a post-Batman V Superman world, where Superman has died.

Naturally, without Superman to serve as a deterrent, a crimewave has erupted. But the Batman also seems to be missing in action. Without a Kryptonian and a Green Lantern, DC supervillain Steppenwolf seizes the opportunity to wipe out Earth.

This new threat brings together Batman, Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg, and Wonder Woman, who must unite to take on Steppenwolf and his Apokoliptian army. Although we've seen plenty of Batman and Wonder Woman, the trailer offers a good look at some of the other members of the Justice League that haven't had their own standalone movies yet.

Interestingly, both Aquaman and Flash look to provide the levity DC's movies have recently been criticized for lacking. There's also a tease at the end for another character that joins the fight.

"He said you'd come," Batman's faithful servant Alfred says, "Now let's hope you're not too late." Who could this mysterious figure be? Current speculation is it's Superman, back from the dead. This was alluded to at the end of Batman V Superman and, as the comics have shown us, Superman rarely stays dead.

Check out our roundup of all the must-see movie trailers from Comic-Con to stay up-to-date on the latest happening from the show.

The Dark Tower Director Reveals Why The Ending Had To Change

By Michael Rougeau on Jul 23, 2017 01:30 am

Fans of Stephen King's The Dark Tower are some of the most dedicated around, and some of them are nervous about director Nik Arcel's upcoming big screen adaptation. Arcel understands that feeling perfectly.

"If I hadn't directed this film, I would be on online right now going, 'Where's Eddie and Susannah? What the hell's going on?!'" Arcel told GameSpot during San Diego Comic-Con this week. "Like, I would be so nervous, really. So I know exactly how they're feeling. But that's why I feel comfortable, in a way--because I know that we are true in our hearts, and that we actually did everything we could."

Look no further than the director's recent ask-me-anything session on Reddit to witness fans' fervor over these questions. Eddie and Susannah are absolutely crucial characters in the grand scheme of the series, and fans are concerned by the fact that they--and countless more elements of the franchise's mythology and world--didn't make it into this film.

As Arcel pointed out, they weren't in the series' first book, The Gunslinger, either. Written when Stephen King was just 19 years old, the first Dark Tower book is short, surreal, and laser-focused on three characters: The gunslinger (played by Idris Elba), the man in black (Matthew McConaughey), and the boy, Jake (Tom Taylor). So, too, is the movie, which Arcel believes makes it faithful to the series.

"I always felt like you can't possibly adapt this. You can't adapt The Dark Tower. It's too dense, it's too sprawling, it's too many different genres. Every book is a different beast," he said. "But then when I read the script, I was like oh, that's really smart. It actually is tight, it's lean, it serves as kind of an introduction to the world, the characters. It's really a first film. It's a first film, but it still takes little ideas from some of the other books, and so makes the world feel more rounded in a way."

"And the script was lean, you know?" he added. "It wasn't like we cut it down or anything. It's pretty much the script.

There's no guarantee that Arcel will get to make more Dark Tower movies after this one, but he's prepared for the possibility. And he said future Dark Tower films could potentially stick closer to the books, once this initial film introduces audiences to the story.

"It can't be a straight up adaptation, but it can certainly become one the further we get into the series," he said. "I mean, let's say we get to make more movies, it can actually be more and more faithful as we go, because what we had to do on this first one was basically just like: This is the world. These are the characters. This is what this world's about."

The Dark Tower's fans are incredibly passionate, but they're also divided. Some prefer the earlier books in the series, others the latter. Some love the fact that Stephen King wrote himself into the story as a character, and others despise it. (Arcel said King told him never to do that: "He was just like, 'Just don't ever put me in any of the films. No character called Stephen King in there.'")

One thing Arcel knew had to change from the first book is the ending, and there's an exceedingly simple reason why: Narrative payoff.

"The first book was lean and tight and was kind of simple, and the first book was all about Roland, Walter, and Jake. And so is this film: It's Roland, Walter, and Jake. Eddie and Susannah, they come later. Oy comes later. So we're actually being kind of true to that," he said. "But obviously, there's some things in the first book that we couldn't do. I mean, we couldn't have Roland pursue the main villain the entire film for them to just sit down and have a little chat at the end, like, 'Hey, man.' So that's why we've gotta have them have it out at the end, instead of just sitting and talking by a campfire."

"I wouldn't want to ever do a film that ended on some sort of cliffhanger, you know, 'and here's what's going to happen if you go see this one!'" he continued. "I think it's very important for any first film in any franchise, or in any kind of saga that you're trying to tell, is of course it has to work as a standalone film. Because you never know, and you also want to give people a satisfying film, right? There has to be some sort of conclusion."

The Dark Tower hits theaters August 4.

Wonder Woman 2 Is Officially Happening

By Alex Newhouse on Jul 23, 2017 01:16 am

Considering that Wonder Woman performed extremely well at the box office, it was a pretty sure thing that a sequel would be coming. Today, Warner Bros. made it official: a follow up to Wonder Woman is being made.

At its San Diego Comic-Con panel today, the company announced that a sequel will be coming. It's unclear right now who'll be directing it, although it's likely that the first movie's director, Patty Jenkins, will return. Today, however, Geoff Johns confirmed to Yahoo Movies that he's currently writing Wonder Woman 2's script. He also revealed that Gal Gadot will reprise her role as Wonder Woman.

No Caption Provided

It was widely assumed that Wonder Woman 2 would be greenlit even before its official announcement. Some early details even came out ahead of time: one report stated that the film would be set in the 1980s and pit Diana against the forces of the Soviet Union.

The first movie was a runaway success for DC. It broke several box office records, becoming the most successful film ever made by a female director and the most successful US release for DC. It was also widely praised by critics, and you can read GameSpot's own review here.

Ready Player One's First Teaser Is Filled With Pop Culture Icons

By Alessandro Fillari on Jul 23, 2017 12:47 am

During Warner Bros. Film Panel at San Diego Comic-Con, attendees were treated to the first footage of the film adaptation of Ernest Cline's bestselling novel, Ready Player One. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film takes place in a dystopian future where the people of earth retreat from their troubles to a virtual world where the love of all things pop-culture and 80s style come to life. With the creator of the VR world launching a contest to find all of its easter eggs, the main character must embark on a journey through the VR world in search of clues to solve a puzzle and win the ultimate prize.

In this teaser, we get a sneak peak of the world, and how people will come to interact with one another while in the VR space Oasis. With its affection for the 80s and pop-culture, there's tons of references scattered around in the two minute teaser. Including some sightings of The Iron Giant, Kaneda's bike from Akira, the time-traveling DeLorean from Back To The Future, and much more. It's a bit overwhelming how much is there, but it's certainly a feast for the eyes.

Set for release in 2018, Spielberg's adaptation of Cline's novel should be one to keep an eye out on. With its love for gaming, films, and all things geek, it'll certainly be a rather hyper-active nostalgia trip for those who've grown up with an affection for pop culture and entertainment.

Deadpool Announced For Marvel VR Game

By Alex Newhouse on Jul 23, 2017 12:41 am

If you've ever wanted to play as Deadpool in first person, you'll soon get a chance. Marvel announced that the comedic antihero is coming to Marvel Powers United VR.

Alongside the announcement, Marvel put out a trailer of the character in action. It shows Deadpool doing all sorts of Deadpool-y things: kicking his feet up on a desk, slicing enemies with his sword, and shouting all sorts of one-liners at his foes. You can watch it in the embed above.

The short glimpse of gameplay also shows that Deadpool's trademark, comic book-style text bubbles will show up in the game. You'll get "POW!" and "HEADSHOT" popping up while you fight.

It seems like it might be somewhat strange to hear Deadpool yelling out silly jokes while you control him in first-person VR, but he nonetheless looks like a good addition to the game. Alongside Deadpool, three other characters have been announced. Captain Marvel, Hulk, and Rocket Raccoon will also be playable.

Marvel Powers United VR is a cooperative virtual reality game that's currently scheduled for release sometime in 2018. It's coming exclusively for Oculus Rift. We were able to check the game out at the D23 expo earlier this month; you can read our preview here.

The Lego Ninjago Movie Plot Revealed In New SDCC Trailer

By Patrick Faller on Jul 23, 2017 12:41 am

The Lego Ninjago Movie is coming to theaters in September, and today at Comic-Con in San Diego the full official trailer was released, revealing the plot behind the latest instalment in the Lego movie franchise. You can check out the trailer above.

The movie tells the origin story of Lloyd the Green Ninja (voiced by Dave Franco), as he learns his father is the evil Lord Garmadon (Justin Theroux) and trains to become a ninja to defeat him. It seems his mother Misako (Olivia Munn) fell in love with Garmadon before he turned into an evil warlord, and who could blame her; "He said he wanted to conquer the world, I thought it was a figure of speech," she says in the trailer.

We'll also see Lloyd and his fellow ninjas train with Master Wu (played by none other than Jackie Chan), and from the looks of things audiences are in for the combo of mini-figure action and tongue-in-cheek humor the Lego films are known for.

The Lego Ninjago Movie premieres on September 22. On the same day, The Lego Ninjago Movie Video Game comes out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, and you check out the game's trailer here.
