Shadow Of War Beginner's Guide: Tips And Tricks

By Array on Oct 11, 2017 11:40 pm

Tips To Survive

With expansive skill trees and a lot of unlockables, Middle-earth: Shadow of War can feel overwhelming. That's why we've put together a beginner's guide focused on helping you through the game's early hours. Put these handy tips into practice and you'll be decapitating Orcs and mounting Caragors in no time.

Shadow of War is out now for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It was originally slated to launch in August, only for it to be pushed back to October. A free-to-play strategy RPG version of Middle-earth: Shadow of War for iOS and Android devices launched ahead of the game's release. Don't miss our Shadow of War review.

For a brief rundown on the original game's plot, check out our feature detailing the game's story so far. You can also check out our guides on the 12 Best Skills in Shadow of War, as well as how to get each Legendary gear set.

Easy Skill Points

Gaining skill points in Shadow Of War will allow Talion to unlock new abilities and progress into higher tiered move-sets. While there are many opportunities to gain skill points, such as taking out Elite Orcs and clearing Vendetta and Nemesis missions, there are quicker and more efficient ways to earn access to valuable upgrades.

The easiest way to get a skill point early on is to purify all three Haedir towers in each region. Doing so also unlocks a handy fast travel point. After purifying a tower, use it to identify all the collectables in the region. As you're adventuring around the map finishing other tasks, it's worth collecting the Ithildin symbols, Shelob memories, and Gondorian artifacts to net another Skill Point, so don't ignore the collectables in the early game. With Talion's Elven Agility, it shouldn't take you long to run around and grab them all. Plus, you get great bonus abilities and items for collecting the lot.

Moreover, the Shadows of the Past side-missions also offer skill points when completing timed goals along with the bonus objectives.

Make Sure To Read Up On Skills Before You Invest

The Skills menu has a lot of categories and options available, but you'll have to choose wisely. It's worth noting that after unlocking each base skill, you can unlock one of three upgrades for that skill. These provide additional benefits to an already useful skill, but in general, you'll want to focus on the primary abilities first.

Each skill row has a multitude of abilities that will accommodate play-styles ranging from full offensive to stealth-focused. Try to get a feel for what you favor as you play through the missions. But don't sweat it too much, as it's easy to earn more skill points, and you'll end up with a full skill tree before you know it.

Mounted Skills Are Worthwhile

Mounted skills are useful additions to your skill-set. It'll make you a powerful beastmaster capable of riding Caragors, Graugs, and even Drakes. They're a nifty way of getting from A to B, while causing some serious damage along the way.

However, mounted beasts are most effective against Orc captains and their minions. Not only can they help you take on a captain, but they can also trigger some to run away in fear. Don't underestimate the strength of mounted skills; you never know when they can aid you.

Check Your Gear Often

Enemy captains and Nemeses always drop random items upon defeat. Make sure to go into your inventory every so often and check that you've equipped the best gear you've got and applied any available upgrades. There are various armour sets you can collect and wear, like the Bright Lord set you obtain by unlocking all the elven doors.

Deconstruct Your Old Gear

Mirian is one of Shadow of War's most valuable currencies, and while you might feel like you're swimming in riches early on, there are some expensive abilities you'll have to purchase eventually. One of the easiest ways to line your pockets is by breaking down your old equipment. If it's not your highest level piece--and it's not legendary--then it's not worth holding onto.

To break down equipment, go into your inventory and select a piece of gear you're not wearing. You'll see a small button prompt that tells you what to press to dismantle the unnecessary baggage.

Complete Gear Challenges

Each piece of epic and rare gear that you acquire has an associated Challenge, which requires you to complete a certain task. After completing this Challenge, and investing Mirian, you'll unlock an upgrade to your gear. It doesn't give you a whole lot more damage, and you can only upgrade an epic or rare piece once, but the upgrades provide useful buffs. For example, you can acquire an upgrade that increases the chances of an enemy's head exploding upon death, freaking out nearby allies. It's well worth doing, especially for rare equipment, where the challenges can be as easy as getting five headshots or killing three beasts (which you're already doing as part of normal gameplay anyway).

When it comes to legendary gear, Celebrimbor can upgrade it multiple times until it hits max level, so these are worth holding onto. If you have a completed armor set and have equipped everything, look into its gear challenges, as not only will you get the buffs from wearing the full set, but from the upgraded gear too.

Unlock Gem Slots ASAP

Killing captains, pulling down monuments, and causing chaos in Mordor can bag you a gem, which can net you added bonuses. Each piece of gear has a gem slot that you need to unlock by paying 1000 Mirian. This might seem like a lot, but it's worth doing as early as you can. You don't really need Mirian until Act II, when you start doing Fortress Assaults, and by then you should have banked plenty from completing missions and deconstructing old gear.

Pay Attention To Gem Bonuses

You get a preview of what bonuses you'll get if you hover over a gem, and you'll notice that a gem offers different bonuses depending on what it's attached to. This can range from better loot drops, bonus XP, or even a level boost for your followers, so read this and adapt according to what you want. It's also worth noting that if you attach gems to your stuff, removing them later doesn't destroy them, so you can swap them in and out at will.

Combine Gems

If you've picked up three of the same type of gem, it's possible to combine them together to create a more powerful one that yields better rewards when attached to gear. Do this often to ensure that you're always equipped with the best Gems possible. And remember that you can unequip gems in order to use them for combining.

How To Easily Defeat Orc Captains

The easiest way to take on captains early on (beside taking advantage of their weaknesses) is to use the environmental hazards to thin the crowds. Shoot the hanging meat, burst the ghul eggs, hit morgul fly nests, poison grog, explode fire pits, and free the cooped up caragors and graugs. Do as much as you can to cause chaos in the outposts, and try to isolate the captain if you can. It'll make your life a lot easier than getting overwhelmed by him and all his lackeys.

And if you do get overwhelmed, the enemy AI is pretty forgiving if you need to run away and recoup for a bit. Orcs have a relatively short attention span so climb somewhere high where they can't see you, wait for them to stop looking for you, and dive right back in. The Captains and Warchiefs don't leave their area, so you can whittle them down bit by bit if you need to.

12 Best Skills In Shadow Of War

By Array on Oct 11, 2017 11:39 pm

Essential Skills

There are a lot of skills to choose from in Middle-earth: Shadow of War, and you obviously want to choose wisely. Skills are divided across six categories, with each accommodating different playstyles ranging from stealth to full offensive. And after unlocking each base skill, you can unlock three upgrades for that skill. Click ahead to check out some of the most useful skills in the game along with recommendations of their best upgrades.

But if you're worried about venturing down a path you may not like in the long term, don't worry too much--Shadow of War is very generous with doling out Skill Points. While you can't take a Skill Point back, it's very easy to earn another one through normal play. You'll find our recommendations for primary and sub-skills in the order they appear on the skill tree.

Shadow of War is out now for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It was originally slated to launch in August, only for it to be pushed back to October. A free-to-play strategy RPG version of Middle-earth: Shadow of War for iOS and Android devices launched ahead of the game's release. Be sure to read our Shadow of War review.

For a brief rundown on the original game's plot, check out our feature recapping the Shadow of Mordor's story. You can also check out our Shadow Of War Beginner's Guide, as well as our guide covering how to get each Legendary gear set.

Combat Skill: Fatal Counter (requires level 15)

Want to take out enemies quickly? You need Fatal Counter. This sub-skill of the moderately useful Perfect Counter skill lets you mow through groups of enemies with relative ease. The game is generous with it blue flashing Counter indicator, and with this skill active, any Orc you fend off is automatically a dead Orc.

Combat Skill: Ground Finisher

In combat, an effective way to kill an Orc is to execute them while they're stunned on the ground with the right shoulder button and the square/X button. However, this execution takes time, leaving you open to enemy strikes, which often forces you to cancel out of it whenever danger looms too close. Fortunately, there is a skill to circumvent this: the Ground Finisher skill decreases the amount of time it takes to perform this powerful takedown. To ensure you're never interrupted again, pair it with sub-class ability Wraith Shield to counter enemies with Celebrimbor while you're doing your business.

Combat Skill: Ceaseless Might (requires level 19)

The upgrade for the fifth combat upgrade Brutal Aggression is a highly useful one. With Ceaseless Might you get a second opportunity to use any of your might-depleting skills. That means you can double down on useful abilities like executions and abilities like Elven Light.

Combat Skill: Adamant (requires level 13)

If you find yourself wishing you had just one more chance to stay in the fight after facing defeat a few too many times, then Adamant is for you. This Upgrade for Retaliation (the final skill in the Combat chain) gives you one more Last Chance circle, which you can find in the bottom left of your mini-map, allowing you to cheat death one more time.

Predator Skill: Wraith Chain

If you're a big fan of sneaky stabbing Orcs, then Wraith Chain is the perfect skill for you, as it allows you to link up four stealth kills at a time with enough Focus. While this can be an effective skill, it's made even more useful with its Shadow Blade upgrade, which makes it so your first chained skill consumes no Focus. Forget luring a small group of Orcs one by one to bushes for sneaky stabs; Wraith Chain just lets you clear them out entirely.

Ranged Skill: Detonate

Detonate can help you make mischief from afar, as you can unleash a fiery explosion, or call in a group of spiders or ghuls to swarm nearby enemies with its upgrades. Poison Tendril poisons a grog barrel from a distance to damage any orc that drinks from it, and of course, Shadow Strike allows you to reach faraway enemies in a flash and move around the battlefield with ease.

Wraith Skill: Elven Light

Shadow of War doesn't give you a ton of AoE (Area of Effect) abilities, but the early unlock Elven Light is one of the best in the game. In addition to putting the hurt on a group of enemies, you can also pair it with an elemental effect; fire and poison are the two best choices here, since Hammer of Eregion is a better way to chain frost effects.

Wraith Skill: Consume

More than just doing damage, Consume is an ability that can help keep you alive. If you frequently find your health dipping in battle, Consume requires a full Might charge, but it lets you take out an enemy and get back in the fight with a fuller health bar.

Wraith Skill: Treasure Hunter

This ability might be at the end of the Wraith skill tree, but it's worth prioritizing early in the game. Without this skill, you have to manually push a button to collect loot from dropped enemies, but once you've equipped this skill, just walking over items adds them to your inventory. While it would be better if this were just a normal part of the game and not something you had to waste a skill point on, equipping it almost ensure you won't leave any valuable items behind on the battlefield.

Mounted Skill: Shadow Mount

Typically you mount beasts by breaking them and holding the circle/B button when you're near them. But with the Shadow Mount skill, you can instantly mount a beast from afar by aiming at them and holding the circle/B button. This comes in handy particularly during the epic fortress battles, as it allows you to take control of damaged enemy Graugs and Caragors, turning their destructive abilities against your foes.

Mounted Skill: Dragon Rider

Due to how dangerous drakes can be during combat, acquiring Dragon Rider is almost a necessity. The sooner you can have these deadly foes on your side, the better. Their devastating fire breath is effective against the game's larger foes. Plus, the added perk of being able to ride them makes them a valuable source of transportation.

Story Skill: Hammer of Eregion (requires level 17)

The upgrade skill for the story chain's Shadow Strider is one of the most helpful skills in Shadow of War. While most abilities are tied to something consumable, Hammer of Eregion allows you to freeze enemies as many times as you want to. While some Captains will knock you back when you try to vault over them, this ability leaves the ones who can be frozen wide open to your devastating combo attacks.

The 10 Greatest Cyborgs In Pop Culture History

By Aaron Pruner on Oct 11, 2017 08:30 pm

More Human Than Human--that's the iconic motto of the Tyrell Corporation in Ridley Scott's sci-fi masterpiece, Blade Runner. This simple phrase advertised the quality of the company's biorobotic android product, better known as Replicants. The motto can also easily be used to describe the overarching concept of cyborgs throughout pop culture.

From the pages of William Gibson's Neuromancer to James Cameron's cinematic takes on cyborg-themed entertainment, the technological advancements of our society have mirrored the ongoing evolution of the cyborg. With the recent release of Blade Runner 2049, this has never been more relevant, so here are pop culture's 10 best cyborgs.

Roy Batty (Blade Runner)

In 1982's Blade Runner, Rutger Hauer's Replicant, Roy Batty, showcased the struggles of a conscious new species fighting for the right to exist in a future world of prejudice.

Batty is portrayed as a formidable villain, and does his fair share of insidious deeds throughout the film, but his quest for freedom adds complex layers to this good versus evil story. The film comes to an unexpected climax as Batty goes against his own programming to save Deckard, showing his flawed humanity in the process.

Steve Austin (The Six Million Dollar Man)

"We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better, faster, stronger..." The iconic opening narration to The Six Million Dollar Man sums up ABC's classic science fiction series.

After Steve Austin (Lee Majors) suffers a life-threatening accident, the Office of Scientific Intelligence rebuilds the astronaut from the ground up, replacing his right arm, both legs and left eye with bionic prosthetics and implants. An upgraded Austin soon hits the streets to fight crime for the government. The popularity of the cyborg hero concept led to 1976's entertaining spinoff, The Bionic Woman, and a well done, but short-lived, TV remake in 2007.

Inspector Gadget

Using The Pink Panther's Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers) and Get Smart's Maxwell Smart (Don Adams) as inspiration, Inspector Gadget hit the world of cartoon entertainment in 1983. The popular children's show followed the adventures of a bumbling detective who used a never-ending supply of high-tech implants to fight crime.

The formula worked as the odd gadgets informed the Inspector's physical comedy. Teaming up with Penny, his quirky niece, and a genius dog named Brain, the formula proved highly entertaining for the show's young audience. The series ran for three years before hitting syndication, eventually leading to the 1999 live-action movie starring Matthew Broderick.

Lt. Commander Geordi LaForge (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

From 1987 to 1994, LeVar Burton portrayed the USS Enterprise-D's Chief Engineering Officer. His signature VISOR--Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement--gave Geordi some extra sensory abilities that made him one-of-a-kind.

LaForge became an instant icon in the world of Star Trek, continuing Gene Roddenberry's long-running practice of maintaining diversity in science fiction entertainment. Presenting an African American character as a high functioning intellectual--harking back to the 1966 casting of Nichelle Nichols as Starfleet Officer Nyota Uhura--continued pushing the genre forward, both in the series' seven seasons and the multiple movies that followed.

Dolores Abernathy (Westworld)

Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) is the oldest active host in Westworld, a technologically advanced theme park catering to high society's deepest and darkest fantasies. Her archetypal narrative at the beginning of HBO's high-concept series found her living as a rancher's daughter amid the backdrop of 19th century Wild West America.

As the story progressed, though, Dolores discovered a much deeper truth: Her whole existence was an elaborately orchestrated work of fiction. Dolores eventually gained a sense of self that led to a chaotic upheaval that was life-threatening to Westworld's patrons and damaging to the park's uncertain future.

Officer James Murphy (RoboCop)

Acting as a bloody, over-the-top satire on the excess of 1980s America, Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop presented Dallas City--an industrialized cesspool run rampant with all sorts of violent criminals. If only a hero would step up and bring order to these streets!

Enter Officer James Murphy (Peter Weller). After suffering multiple gunshots and being presumed dead, Murphy gets the Humpty Dumpty treatment. Rebuilt with a prosthetic cerebrum and cerebellum and a cybernetic body--and wielding a pretty awesome hip-holstered handgun--the RoboCop was born. Dallas City, and popular culture, were never the same again.

Sharon Agathon (Battlestar Galactica)

With so many cyborgs--err, Cylons--featured in Battlestar Galactica, one character easily stood out from the pack. Contrary to popular opinion--sorry, Number Six (Tricia Helfer)--Sharon Agathon (Grace Park) is the Cylon hero in question.

Sharon's motivations were simple: Her love for her husband and daughter, and her role as a Galactica officer. These emotional attachments flipped the Cylon concept on its head, giving Agathon a human foundation that, along with her romance with Helo (Tahmoh Penikett), helped to pave the way for the show's progressive climax. Coming to the aid of humans, time and again, Sharon brought levity and hope to the bleak and brooding series.

Maeve Millay (Westworld)

Acting as the brothel madam in Westworld's Mariposa Saloon, Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton) fit an Old West archetype to a T. Yet when a virus impacts her narrative loop, Maeve begins questioning her reality as echoes from previous programmed identities come back to haunt her.

Much like Dolores, Maeve becomes self aware. But instead of inciting a violent uprising within the park, Maeve breaks through her coded reality to discover the inner workings of Delos, the company that owns Westworld. As ruthless as she is cunning, the brothel madame uses her skills to manipulate her programming while charting her own escape from this virtual world to the real one above ground.

The T-800 (The Terminator)

In 1984, the Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 Series 800 Terminator--or T-800 for short--traveled from the future with the sole mission of killing Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), preventing her unborn son from leading the human resistance in 2029.

This assassination mission--the first of many, as documented in the film's numerous sequels--changed the action movie game. Arnold Schwarzenegger's ruthless killing machine was impactful in multiple ways: He inadvertently caused Skynet to become sentient in the franchise's first film, his endoskeleton is impervious to most damage, and most importantly, the character put Arnold on the map as an action star.

Darth Vader (Star Wars)

Equipped with cybernetic arms, legs, respirator helmet and sinister-looking cape, Darth Vader is easily one of the most iconic cyborg characters in pop culture history.

His stature and mystique combined with an array of epic Sith Lord powers--his lightsaber skills and psychic chokeholds are stuff of legend--are just a few elements that lend to Vader's notorious stake in the world of entertainment. With a fair share of repressed humanity and a heaping helping of family drama, the tale of Anakin Skywalker's downfall brings all the nostalgia, emotion and terror necessary to give Darth Vader some legendary cyborg status.

Destiny 2 Iron Banner Guide - All The New Weapons, Armor, Gear, And Rewards Detailed

By Tamoor Hussain on Oct 11, 2017 06:47 pm

Destiny 2's Iron Banner Crucible event is live now on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, bringing with it some fresh new gear and weapons for your Guardian. We've gathered up images of everything on offer and put them in a gallery for your perusal.

But before we get into that, here's some handy information to help you get comfortable with what Iron Banner is, as there have been some small changes from the first game. First off, to actually take part you need to visit Lord Saladin in the Tower, which requires you to complete Destiny 2's story. Once the credits have rolled on the campaign, you'll be given access to the Tower and will be able to speak with Saladin once you've reached level 20.

The Iron Banner is accessible through its own Crucible playlist, which features Quickplay modes and matchmaking. You can join with a Fireteam or take on enemies solo. Whatever your choice, you've only got seven days, as the Iron Banner ends on October 17 with the weekly reset.

Instead of 6v6, like in the original Destiny, Iron Banner matches in Destiny 2 are now 4v4. Additionally, Power levels are not taken into account, as Light levels were previously. Instead, "your fighting abilities, not your power levels, will decide the outcome," according to Bungie. Despite the official requirements outlined above, you may only need to finish the campaign and hit 20 with one character on your account; we were able to jump into Iron Banner and do well with a very low-level character.

All this is in service of racking up kills, climbing the ranks, and scoring Iron Banner Engrams. These are your ticket to getting the gear featured across this gallery. We've grabbed screenshots of all the Titan, Hunter, and Warlock gear, as well as the Faction Weapons Saladin has to offer.

For those looking for a little more, the Iron Banner update will be followed by Destiny 2's Leviathan Raid Prestige Mode, which makes the already pretty tricky raid even more difficult. The Leviathan Prestige Raid was recently delayed and now launches at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET / 6 PM BST on Wednesday, October 18 (4 AM AEDT on October 19).

It's October, and with Halloween approaching, Blizzard is marking the occasion with a new Overwatch event. Halloween Terror 2017 is now underway, and that means new skins are available for a limited time.

Like last year's event, Halloween Terror replaces the standard Loot Box with a special themed one. Among them are a variety of skins, including Legendary ones for Ana, McCree, Zenyatta, and Symmetra. You can check out all of the new skins currently up for grabs in the gallery above.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 - 10 Essential Crafting Recipes

By Kallie Plagge on Oct 11, 2017 03:56 am

Get Crafty

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is out now, and reviewer Brett Todd described it in GameSpot's review as "one of the most captivating role-playing games ever made." It's also a very robust game, which means it can be difficult to learn all its intricate systems.

In particular, the crafting system in Divinity: Original Sin 2 requires a lot of trial and error. That can be intimidating when you're trying to navigate its many menus and learn how everything works. But you're in luck; click forward to see 10 of the more useful--and interesting--crafting recipes you'll want along your adventure.

For more on Divinity: Original Sin 2, check out our guides roundup, and be sure to read our review. You can also watch the video version of this guide for more help.

Skillbooks

If you've been playing for a bit, you might have a few spell scrolls you haven't used. Scrolls are useful in a pinch, but they're one-use; if you want to memorize the spell itself, you can combine it with a book from the same school of abilities to make a skillbook and unlock the full spell. For example, combining a Fireball scroll with a basic Pyrokinetic book will get you the Fireball skillbook.

Combination Skills

Once you have some skill books, you can create hybrid spells by combining skill books from different sets. There are a total of 48 new skills you can create by crafting an elemental book with a non-elemental book. For example, you can combine Necromancer and Hydrosophist skillbooks to get the Blood Rain skillbook.

Glowing Idol Of Rebirth

Want to cheat death, but you're low on resurrection scrolls? If you talk to Dorotya in the Undertavern beneath Driftwood during Act 2 and start the quest A Web of Desire, you have the opportunity to get an item called Ashen Idol of Rebirth. (If you miss it, you can always just pickpocket her.) If you combine it with a resurrection scroll, it will become the Glowing Idol of Rebirth, which will automatically resurrect you if you die.

Snow Boots

If you aren't careful, you and your party members can slip on icy surfaces, and slipping will cost you a turn in combat. But, if you combine nails with any footwear, it will permanently grant you immunity to slipping and falling. Definitely craft these before taking on cryomancers.

Poison Weapons

If you stumble upon an Ooze Barrel while out exploring, hold onto it! If you combine any weapon with a barrel of poison, that weapon will permanently gain poison effects. It won't add a ton of damage, but it will help you chip away at your enemies' health.

Attar Of The Blood Rose

If you've explored Radeka's Cave in Act 1, you'll know about the Blood Rose. There is only one in the game, so get it before you progress. If you combine the Blood Rose with an empty potion bottle, you'll get Attar of the Blood Rose. It gives a +1 bonus to all attributes until you die, so as long as you keep the party member who drank it alive, that's a fantastic permanent stat increase.

Charming Arrowheads

These are some of the most useful arrows in the game. You can craft them easily with honey; combine an arrow with a honey source to get a Charming Arrowhead. (We recommend beehives, since they have infinite nectar.) Hitting an enemy with one of these arrows will charm them into fighting for you for a few turns.

(Mostly) Infinite Lockpicks

Whenever you're running low on lockpicks, you can craft your own! You can combine nails and a repair hammer or soap and a key, and you'll get brand-new lockpicks for all your totally legitimate needs. Note that undead party members can also use their finger as an unlimited supply of lockpicks.

Potion Mixing

This one might seem obvious once you think about it, but it's very useful! You can combine minor healing potions to increase their potency, which is great when you've leveled a bit and the minor potions aren't cutting it. You can take a minor healing potion to a regular one all the way up to a giant healing potion for tons of health regen.

Prankster Poison

This one's for when you feel like messing with your co-op partner. Combine a flask of poison with red dye to get a "healing potion" that… will poison them, just for giggles.
