Pixar Announces Its Mysterious New "Cosmic" Movie, Soul

By Dan Auty on Jun 19, 2019 11:07 pm

Toy Story 4 hits theaters this week, and box office predictions suggest that it's going to be one of the biggest movies in the studio's history. But while anticipation for this sequel is high, the studio also continues to make original movies. The animated fantasy Onward has already been confirmed for a release next March, and Pixar has now announced another movie for 2020, titled Soul.

News of this latest Pixar movie was revealed via Twitter alongside a logo and the release date of June 19, 2020. The tweet also states that Soul "will take you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life's most important questions." Check it out below.

Soul will be directed by Pete Docter, who previously helmed Pixar's highly acclaimed Up and Inside Out. No further details have been revealed yet, but expect casting news to follow in the coming months.

Onward will arrive on March 6, 2020. The movie features Spider-Man star Tom Holland and Guardians of the Galaxy's Chris Pratt as teenage elf brothers who embark on a magical quest--check out the first trailer, which was released last month.

Toy Story 4 hits theaters this Friday, June 21--you can read GameSpot's roundup of critics' reviews here. For more on Pixar, check out our ranking of every original Pixar short film to date.

Animal Crossing For Switch Won't Support Cloud Saves

By Kevin Knezevic on Jun 19, 2019 11:05 pm

After months of anticipation, Nintendo finally pulled back the curtain on its new Animal Crossing game for Switch--now dubbed Animal Crossing: New Horizons--at E3 2019. Since the company's E3 Direct, more details about the title have begun to emerge, and one of the new tidbits we've learned is that it won't support cloud saves.

In an interview with French website Gamekult (via US Gamer), game producer Higashi Nogami confirmed that, unlike most Switch titles, New Horizons will not allow players to back up their save data to the cloud. The reason for this, according to Nogami, is to prevent players from manipulating time in the game, thereby cheating.

This news doesn't come as much of a surprise, particularly if you've been following the series. Each installment to date has taken measures to prevent players from cheating; in the past, if you quit the game without saving, the irritable mole Mr. Resetti would pop up the next time you loaded your file and scold you (although he'll be out of a job in New Horizons thanks to the game's auto-save feature). Mr. Resetti was optional in Animal Crossing: New Leaf for 3DS, but that title similarly didn't allow you to back up saves.

New Horizons isn't the only Switch game with this restriction, either; a handful of other first-party titles, namely Splatoon 2 and Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee, likewise don't support cloud save backups, and that will presumably be the case for Pokemon Sword and Shield as well (although that hasn't been confirmed yet). A few notable third-party games also don't support cloud saves, such as Dark Souls Remastered, Dead Cells, and NBA 2K19.

Cloud saves are one of the perks you get for subscribing to the Nintendo Switch Online service. While New Horizons won't support that feature, the game does require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription in order to play online with others. As we learned during a Treehouse Live demo, New Horizons will support up to eight players online and locally. Nintendo also confirmed the game will feature couch co-op for the first time in the series.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons launches for Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2020. We learned a lot of other details about the game during E3. This time around, players will be establishing their own village on a deserted island, and they'll be able to use materials they gather from rocks and trees to craft tools and furniture. The game also makes some welcome quality-of-life improvements, like giving you more control over where other animals move in. You can read more in our Animal Crossing: New Horizons pre-order guide.

Spider-Man: Far From Home: How Much Did The Cast Know About Endgame?

By Meg Downey on Jun 19, 2019 11:00 pm

To call the MCU "cagey" about protecting its secrets and reveals would be putting it lightly. Since the superhero boom, the people at Marvel Studios have been doing everything they can to obfuscate and deflect the truth about their movies from the general public before their release--and sometimes, even from the actors themselves. Most recently, some of Avengers: Endgame's biggest stars opened up about being told they were "filming a wedding" rather than a funeral for Tony Stark in the final moments of the movie. Other cast members have spoken up about only being given parts of scenes or "dummy" scripts, and the directors themselves have sparked social media campaigns begging fans not to spoil the movie's secrets.

Of course, some of these claims may just be for show, or at the very least be playfully exaggerated--especially in the case of "notorious" spoiler-ers like Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland who have made names for themselves by unintentionally (or, sometimes, very intentionally) letting secrets about their various movies slip well before they're supposed to. Marvel's secrecy has become a meme unto itself, which really begs the question: How do you make a movie like Spider-Man: Far From Home that deals directly with the fallout of the most secretive Marvel movie of all time if you don't actually know what happens in the most secretive Marvel movie of all time?

The answer: You don't, apparently. For all that Endgame has garnered a reputation for being kept under complete lock-and-key from just about everyone, it turns out the cast and crew of Spider-Man: Far From Home was in on the whole thing from the very beginning. Yes, even infamous secret-spiller Tom Holland.

GameSpot sat down with Ned Leeds himself, Jacob Batalon, and Far From Home director Jon Watts to talk about the secret keeping of a post-Endgame movie--and it turns out, security on spoilers was way less strict than we could have anticipated.

"We read the full thing. We read the full script. Nothing was redacted or anything like that. That was like a big secret that we couldn't talk about ever," Batalon admitted. "Even, for some reason, while we were filming we were pretending like it never happened. [...] We made sure that no one ever brought it up. I mean, we'd bring it up as far as story-wise goes, as far as making the scenes and everything, but it was never really a thing discussed. It wasn't a big deal."

And somehow, miraculously, that approach seemed to be successful--at least, so far. Endgame may have avoided major leaks by keeping the actors as in the dark as possible, but Tom Holland would have been in the loop thanks to Far From Home's filming schedule--and it all worked out!

Nice work, Tom!

Watts confirmed--and added that, despite knowing the secrets of Endgame well in advance, Marvel Studios took a relatively hands-off approach to Far From Home's story. "I was one of the lucky few who knew the secret a long, long, long time ago," Watts laughed. "It was more just with that in mind, we were cut loose to develop our movie and to answer a lot of those unanswered questions in Endgame and figure out a way to use that as a jumping-off point."

Watts continued, "It was just like we know where those movies end, and that's where you start, and then where are you going to go from there."

So, where do they go from there? You can find out when Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters on July 2 to officially wrap up Phase 3 and to kick off the mysterious Phase 4.

Internet Boyfriend Keanu Reeves Might Join The MCU

By jeremy winslow on Jun 19, 2019 10:43 pm

With the smashing success of the John Wick franchise, and with a fourth installment slated for a May 2021 release, action badboy Keanu Reeves (47 Ronin, The Matrix) is back in full force. Everyone's loving him, from developer CD Projekt Red to the whole of the Internet. Even Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige admits to looking for "the right way" to include the Canadian-American actor in the MCU.

Feige was interviewed by Comic Book, who asked if the studio was in talks with Reeves. Feige said Marvel talks to Reeves for every movie the company makes. This led to Feige confirming that he wants Reeves in the MCU. "I don't know when, if, or ever he'll join the MCU, but we very much want to figure out the right way to do it." Feige believes the situation with Reeves could play out similarly to Jake Gyllenhaal (Source Code, Southpaw), who has been approached "multiple times" until "the right way" appeared. Gyllenhaal plays Quentin Beck/Mysterio in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is scheduled to debut on July 2.

Reeves is everywhere these days. The prolific action star plays himself in Netflix romcom Always Be My Maybe and lends his voice to Toy Story 4. Reeves also returns to Ted "Theodore" Logan in Bill & Ted Face the Music and plays "key" character and "legendary rockerboy" Johnny Silverhand in the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077.

During E3 2019 we learned that CD Projekt Red approached Reeves about a year ago or so and called the meeting a "match made in heaven." Cyberpunk 2077 will launch on April 16, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Here Are All The Games Leaving Xbox Game Pass In June

By Steve Watts on Jun 19, 2019 09:13 pm

Microsoft announced the next few weeks of Xbox game Pass games coming to PC and console, but a few are rotating out as well. You have just over a week to play the games slated for rotation.

On June 27, Next Up Hero will retire from the service. Then on June 30, Game Pass will sunset Dead Island Definitive Edition, Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition, Shadow Complex Remastered, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Zombie Army Trilogy.

If you want to keep any of these games in your library permanently, your Game Pass subscription grants you a 20% discount on game purchases, as long as you make those purchases while the games are still part of the Game Pass service. Otherwise, just get your time in while you can.

Game Pass costs $10 per month for a standard subscription on PC or Xbox One, but Microsoft recently introduced a new Game Pass Ultimate that bundles both along with Xbox Live Gold for $15 per month. You can try the Ultimate version of the service for $1 for your first month, or take advantage of a little loophole to upgrade your current Gold or Game Pass time on the cheap.

The announcement came alongside new games that are rotating into Game Pass as well. Those include Resident Evil: Revelations, Rare Replay, Torment: Tides of Numenera, and Goat Simulator to close out the month of June.

What's New And Leaving Netflix In July 2019: Movies, TV Shows, And Originals

By Mat Elfring on Jun 19, 2019 08:40 pm

The month of July is a huge one for Netflix. Aside from the streaming service dropping its usual slew of movies and TV series, some of Netflix's most popular shows return this month for brand-new seasons. Make sure to plan out your month now because it's going to be packed.

On July 4, the most anticipated streaming series returns for a third season. That's right, the kids from Stranger Things are back and probably dealing with some more horrible monsters from the Upside Down. Hitting on more '80s nostalgia, this season heads to a mall, the place where all the cool kids hung out and worked during the summer. While we don't know too much about the plot, the latest posters for the new season did reveal some new characters and some behind-the-scenes photos gave us some clues to this season's story.

The two other returning series to keep your eye on are Season 4 of Queer Eye, coming on July 19. Like previous seasons, the cast remakes someone's life in order to better themselves through cleaning up their house, giving the target a makeover, and giving them the confidence to move forward in their lives. If you need something uplifting that will bring a tear to your eye, this is a must watch for you. On July 26, Orange is the New Black returns for Season 7. This will be the final season of the prison dramedy, so maybe we'll see some of the cast finally get released--or shived. This is prison, after all. If you're wondering about Netflix's other big series, Glow, that isn't releasing until August. Be patient.

As far as non-Netflix originals go, there are plenty of movies coming, mainly on July 1. The classic Martin Scorsese movie, Taxi Driver, arrives that day, following Robert DeNiro's character, a war veteran on the verge of a breakdown as he works as a New York City cab driver at night. On the comedic side of things, the sports comedy Caddyshack arrives. The movie follows an elite golf club which has a gopher problem. It's one of the few times golf is fun in a movie.

While there are plenty of things arriving in July, Netflix has also announced many things are leaving as well. On the first of the month, all the Mummy movies are saying goodbye to the streaming service. Also, Wedding Crashers and the first two Austin Powers movies are leaving as well, so watch them all before the first of the month hits.

Below, you'll find everything coming to Netflix in July. If you're interested in more steaming news, check out what Hulu has planned for July.

Marvel Will Reportedly Return To San Diego Comic-Con 2019

By Dan Auty on Jun 19, 2019 07:54 pm

In just a few weeks we'll be entirely up-to-date with the Marvel Cinematic Universe release schedule. Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theatres on July 5, and no further MCU films have been officially announced. But this could change later next month, as it has been reported that the studio is set to make its return to San Diego Comic-Con.

According to Deadline, Marvel is planning to appear in Hall H at this year's SDCC, which takes place on the weekend of July 19-21. Hall H is traditionally the location of the convention's biggest panels and announcements. Marvel did not appear at all at SDCC 2018, with studio boss Kevin Feige having previously made it clear that no more movies would be announced until after Avengers: Endgame was in theaters. But with Endgame released back in April and Far From Home about to arrive, Marvel is expected to reveal the schedule for the next batch of films soon.

Marvel's potential return to Hall H is also notable because rivals DC won't be at SDCC at all this year. While parent company Warner is set to showcase upcoming horror releases such as It: Chapter 2 and Doctor Sleep at the opening night event ScareDiego, DC won't be making any announcements. Unlike Marvel, it already has a packed slate of upcoming movies due over the next two years, including Joker, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, and The Batman.

While Marvel is yet to officially announce its next titles, we do know what some of them are likely to be. Production has now started on the Black Widow prequel movie, starring Scarlett Johansson, while Ryan Coogler and James Gunn are set to direct Black Panther 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 respectively. Other Marvel movies rumored to be in the works include The Eternals, Shang-Chi, and Doctor Strange 2.

New Xbox Game Pass Games: Rare Replay, Resident Evil Game To Close Out June

By Steve Watts on Jun 19, 2019 07:51 pm

The continued rollout of new game releases on the Xbox Game Pass service continues. Following a large set of new releases earlier in June, Microsoft has announced more games coming for players on both Xbox One and PC. Game Pass is now available on the two platforms, but with their own independent libraries--although there is some crossover in these new releases.

First, on June 20, Xbox One players can get Resident Evil: Revelations and Rare Replay. The latter is a compilation of Rare's work over decades, which includes retro games from the ZX Spectrum to games that appeared on the N64 like Banjo Kazooie and Perfect Dark to 360 games like Viva Pinata. It's quite a bit of bang for your Game Pass buck.

Then on June 27, PC Game Pass users will get Torment: Tides of Numenera, and both PC and console players will get Goat Simulator.

All of this follows the exciting Game Pass lineup that was unveiled during E3 earlier this month. That brought games like Metro Exodus, Hollow Knight, and many more to the service; you can play all of those right now.

As Microsoft notes, each of these games is available through individual Game Pass subscriptions for PC or console, but all of them together can be had with a Game Pass Ultimate subscription. That includes both the PC and console Game Pass subscriptions and Xbox Live Gold. It usually costs $15 per month, up from the $10 that the standard Game Pass costs, but you can get Game Pass Ultimate for cheap for a limited time.

Microsoft also noted that a few games will be leaving Game Pass this month as well. Next Up Hero will be gone as of June 27. Then, on June 30, it will retire Dead Island Definitive Edition, Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition, Shadow Complex Remastered, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Zombie Army Trilogy. If you want to hold onto any of those games, grab them now while they're still on Game Pass for a 20% discount.

Upcoming June 2019 Xbox Game Pass Games

  • June 20
    • Rare Replay (Xbox One)
    • Resident Evil: Revelations (Xbox One)
  • June 27
    • Goat Simulator (PC, Xbox One)
    • Torment: Tides of Numenera (PC)

Avengers: Endgame Adds New Post-Credit Footage In Return To Theaters

By Dan Auty on Jun 19, 2019 07:05 pm

Update: It has been confirmed that the re-release of Avengers: Endgame will feature new post-credit footage rather than scenes edited into the movie. Marvel boss Kevin Feige told Screenrant that "there'll be a deleted scene, a little tribute, and a few surprises." This version of Endgame releases on June 28. The movie previously did not have any after-credits scene of note, which is unusual for a Marvel movie. However, in the weeks after its release, a trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home--which deals directly with the fallout of Endgame--was tacked onto the conclusion of the film.

Avengers: Endgame isn't just the most financially successful Marvel film of all the time--it's also the longest. The final running time of Endgame is 181 minutes, 32 minutes longer than Avengers: Infinity War. But superhero fans who feel that even that wasn't enough are in luck--Marvel boss Kevin Feige has revealed that the movie is set to return to theaters with even more footage.

In an interview with comicbook.com, Feige confirmed that an even longer version of the movie would arrive very soon. "We are doing that," he said. "I don't know if it's been announced. And I don't know how much [new footage]... Yeah, we're doing it next weekend."

Obviously, Feige is light on details, and an official announcement about an extended Endgame is yet to be made. But a rerelease could be what the movie needs to overtake James Cameron's Avatar to become the most successful film of all time. Avatar made $2.78 billion at the worldwide box office back in 2009, with Endgame having made $2.74 billion to date.

While we don't know what the extra footage will contain, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have previously spoken about some of the material that was cut from the final edit. These include an awkward exchange between Thor and Valkyrie and an appearance from 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford as the grown-up version of Tony Stark's daughter Morgan. In addition, there are a few moments in the movie's trailers that didn't make it to the version of Endgame seen in theaters.

The next Marvel release is Spider-Man: Far From Home, which hits theaters on July 5. For more, check out GameSpot's look at its enigmatic new character, the 20 best (and worst) Spider-Man Funko Pops, and what the cast knew about Endgame's ending.

Last Of Us 2's Neil Druckmann Jokes About The PlayStation Game's Release Date

By Eddie Makuch on Jun 19, 2019 11:50 am

When is Naughty Dog's The Last of Us: Part II releasing? That's one of the biggest questions in gaming right now. Beyond the fact that it's still coming to PS4, we don't have any idea of just when it's releasing, and now game director Neil Druckmann is having some fun with the discussion.

He joked on Twitter that The Last of Us: Part II is delayed by five minutes every time someone asks for the release date. Naturally, people responded to his tweet by asking for the release date.

The Last of Us: Part II is rumored to release in February this year. Just recently, Ellie actress Ashley Johnson said on a Critical Role video that she thinks the game is coming out during a month that starts with the letter F. Kotaku writer Jason Schreier also believes The Last of Us: Part II could release in February, while noted industry analyst Daniel Ahmad says February 2020 is the current internal date for The Last of Us: Part II.

Officially, no release date--or even a release window--has been announced yet for The Last of Us: Part II. The parody website The Onion recently posted a silly story that said the game would launch in 2019, and Naughty Dog responded by saying it would share more information when it's ready. For more on the much-awaited PS4 game, check out everything we know about The Last of Us: Part II.

The Last of Us: Part II is coming to PS4, but the PS5 will be backwards compatible with PS4 games, so Naughty Dog's title will play on the new system as well.

In other news, one of The Last of Us: Part II's designers has joined the new Xbox studio, The Initiative.

Midsommar Movie First Reactions Are In -- "F**ked Up," "Disturbing," "Delightful"

By Eddie Makuch on Jun 19, 2019 10:52 am

Director Ari Aster's 2018 feature film debut Hereditary starring Toni Collette put the director on the map, and now he's back with another spooky movie titled Midsommar. Reviews and reactions have started to appear for Midsommar ahead of its theatrical release, and appears Aster hasn't suffered a sophomore slump but instead put together another excellent horror film.

Midsommar was screened at a premiere tonight, and reactions have poured in remarking that it's a terrifying and unique film based on Aster's own life and specifically was inspired by a break-up he went through. We've collected a series of Twitter reactions that you can see below.

Writer-director Jordan Peele, known for his own disturbing movies like Get Out and Us, saw a very early cut of Midsommar and remarked in the Fangoria magazine that it's set to become the "most iconic pagan movie" ever.

Midsommar opens in theaters on July 3. It stars Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Will Poulter, and William Jackson Harper.

NHL 20 Announcement Might Be Coming Very Soon

By Eddie Makuch on Jun 19, 2019 09:50 am

It would appear that some news about NHL 20 will be announced on June 19. The NHL video game Twitter account released a cryptic image today that states "Tomorrow" with a graphic of NHL 20 attached. That certainly makes it sound like we might know a lot more about the game soon.

June 19 is also when the 2019 NHL Awards are taking place in Las Vegas, so it appears that whatever announcement EA is teasing could happen then. EA historically has announced new entries in the NHL series during the NHL Awards.

The NHL video game series is confirmed to return this year, but EA hasn't said anything about it as of yet. GameSpot's NHL 19 review scored that game an 8/10, and you can currently play it free with a subscription to EA Access on Xbox One.

EA typically releases new NHL games in September ahead of the NHL season debut in October, so you can expect NHL 20 to launch around then.

Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Sequel Exists Because Nintendo Had "Too Many Ideas" For DLC

By Eddie Makuch on Jun 19, 2019 06:53 am

One of Nintendo's biggest surprises at E3 2019 was the reveal of a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is coming to Nintendo Switch. BotW has already received some substantial downloadable content, so why not continue to expand the game with additional DLC? Now, series producer Eiji Aonuma has revealed some new insight into why Nintendo is making a standalone Breath of the Wild sequel.

Speaking to Kotaku, Aonuma said the development team had "too many ideas" for new DLC for the original Breath of the Wild, so the studio elected to make a sequel.

"When we released the DLC for Breath of the Wild, we realized that this is a great way to add more elements to the same world. But when it comes down to technical things, DLC is pretty much data--you're adding data to a preexisting title," Aonuma added. "And so when we wanted to add bigger changes, DLC is not enough, and that's why we thought maybe a sequel would be a good fit.

"Initially we were thinking of just DLC ideas, but then we had a lot of ideas and we said, 'This is too many ideas, let's just make one new game and start from scratch.'"

The full interview touches on a number of other interesting subjects, including how overtime and crunch is handled on the Zelda development team. Read the full interview at Kotaku.

Aonuma isn't the only returning member of the Breath of the Wild development team, as game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi is also back in that role. Nintendo has also said the developers were inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2.

Earlier, Aonuma spoke to Game Informer about why the team wanted to make Breath of the Wild 2.

"One of the reasons we wanted to create a continuation was because I wanted to revisit that Hyrule again and use that world again, while incorporating new gameplay and new story," Aonuma said.

In addition to Aonuma, Breath of the Wild game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi will serve as the director on the Breath of the Wild sequel.

A lot of the details on the Breath of the Wild sequel are being kept under wraps for now, but the first teaser trailer gave us a lot to think about. Check out GameSpot's breakdown of the Breath of the Wild sequel trailer breakdown here to learn more.

New Adam Sandler/Jennifer Aniston Movie Murder Mystery Is A Massive Success

By Eddie Makuch on Jun 19, 2019 05:57 am

People have a lot of things to say about Adam Sandler and his movies, but they are consistently very popular. His latest film, Murder Mystery on Netflix, was also a runaway success.

Netflix has announced that Murder Mystery, which also stars Jennifer Aniston, enjoyed the "biggest opening weekend ever" for a Netflix movie. According to Netflix, 30.87 million accounts watched the film in its first three days. This includes 13.4 million Netflix accounts in the US/Canada and 17.5 million Netflix accounts from other parts of the world. If a viewer watches at least 70 percent of a movie, that counts as a view, according to Netflix.

In March 2017, Netflix announced that it extended its deal with Sandler for four more movies, bringing his total output for the streaming service to eight films. Netflix content boss Ted Sarandos says Sander is "one of the leading comedians in the film world."

Sandler's first Netflix movie was 2015's The Ridiculous 6, which was followed up by The Do-Over, Sandy Wexler, the Meyerowitz Stories, and The Week Of. His next movie for Netflix is Uncut Gems. His deal with Netflix spans at least eight movies, so even more are coming.

Murder Mystery stars Sander and his wife (Aniston) solving a murder on-board a billionaire's yacht. Luke Evans, Gemma Arterton, and Terrence Stamp also star in the film that was directed by Kyle Newacheck.

The Game Of Thrones Prequel Has Begun Filming, Report Says

By Eddie Makuch on Jun 19, 2019 05:17 am

One of the Game of Thrones prequels has begun filming, according to Entertainment Weekly. The report states that the show starring Noami Watts is filming in Northern Ireland, which is where the mainline HBO show shot frequently.

Importantly, HBO is only filming a pilot episode for the Game of Thrones prequel. If the pilot is successful, HBO might decide to make it an entire series, but for now it's just the pilot.

As fans may recall, the pilot for Game of Thrones was something of a trainwreck. It required extensive re-shoots, while cast members were replaced. Tamzin Merchant played Daenerys in the pilot, but she was re-cast and replaced by Emilia Clarke. Jennifer Ehle played Catelyn Stark in the pilot, and she was replaced by Michelle Fairley in the re-shoots.

A spokesperson for HBO told GameSpot sister site CNET that it has "not confirmed production" of the Game of Thrones prequel. The network said EW is "speculating based on other reports."

X-Men: First Class and Kick-Ass writer Jane Goldman is the showrunner of the new Game of Thrones prequel, while George R.R. Martin is producing. Jessica Jones veteran S.J. Clarkson is directing the pilot.

The untitled prequel is set thousands of years before the events of the main show, which ended its eight-season run in May, so you shouldn't expect to see any characters from that show.

Pokemon Go Brings Legendary Pokemon Kyogre Back For A Limited Time

By Kevin Knezevic on Jun 19, 2019 05:05 am

A new Legendary Pokemon has arrived in Pokemon Go. Following Cresselia's departure, the Legendary Water-type Kyogre is making an encore appearance in Raid Battles for the next few days--and this time, you'll have a chance to encounter its Shiny form.

Kyogre will appear in Raids from now until June 27. As before, you'll first need to team up with other players in-person and battle the Legendary Pokemon before you can have an opportunity to capture it. Kyogre is a pure Water-type, which makes it susceptible to Grass- and Electric-type Pokemon. Your best bet for success is to bring along monsters such as Roserade, Leafeon, Manectric, and Magnezone when challenging it.

Kyogre is the second of three Legendary Pokemon developer Niantic is bringing back to Go. After it leaves on June 27, its counterpart from Pokemon Ruby, Groudon, will take its place until July 10. Just as was the case with Kyogre and Cresselia, you'll also have a chance to encounter a Shiny Groudon when it returns to Raids. You can read more details on the official Pokemon Go website.

Kyogre's return comes on the heels of the annual Pokemon Go Fest, which took place in Chicago this past weekend. As a reward for completing enough Global Challenges during the event, Niantic is giving players twice the usual amount of Candy for capturing and hatching Pokemon until June 25. Eggs will also hatch at half of their normal distance until then, and you're guaranteed to earn one Rare Candy per Raid.

On top of those bonuses, Niantic is bringing one of the three Legendary dogs, Raikou, back for a special Raid day. The Legendary Electric-type will return to Raid Battles on Saturday, June 29, from 4-7 PM local time. During the event, you'll be able to receive up to five free Raid Passes from Gyms, and you may even encounter a Shiny Raikou.

Top 10 Best-Selling Games In The US For May 2019 Revealed, As Switch Outsells PS4 And Xbox One

By Eddie Makuch on Jun 19, 2019 04:41 am

The NPD Group has released its monthly report for May 2019, revealing which games and consoles sold the best in the United States during the month.

Beginning with game sales, NetherRealm's Mortal Kombat 11 was the best-selling game in the US for the month, repeating its top performance from April when it was released. Mortal Kombat 11 now becomes the best-selling game of 2019 so far. Its second month was a strong one, as the NPD said month-two sales nearly doubled comparable sales of any other Mortal Kombat game in history for its second month.

The No. 2 overall best-selling game of May 2019 in the US was PlayStation 4 exclusive Days Gone. Also notable for May was that Minecraft re-appeared in the top ten list, coming in at No. 9.

Overall, game sales in the United States reached $262 million in May, which is down 13 percent year-over-year. It was a particularly tough month, as May 2019 sales were the lowest for a May month since May 2013 when total game sales reached $222 million. In terms of new releases specifically, May 2019 is the lowest for a May month since May 1998, the NPD added.

On a year-to-date basis, however, total game sales have now reached $2.2 billion, which is up 2 percent year-over-year. Sales of Nintendo Switch games are growing, but the uptick in Switch software sales was offset by lower sales on every other platform that the NPD tracks.

Moving to hardware, the Nintendo Switch was the best-seller of May 2019. It's also the No. 1 best-performing console of 2019 across unit sales and dollar revenue.

For May 2019 specifically, spending on all video game consoles dropped 20 percent to $149 million year-over-year. The Switch grew, but all other systems dropped. Looking at year-to-date, total hardware spending is now $1.1 billion, which is down 17 percent.

Looking at the full picture--covering games, hardware, and accessories--total US video game spending reached $641 million, which is down 11 percent. Year-to-date sales are also down, falling 3 percent to $4.7 billion.

Division 2 Update Adds New Gunner Specialization, Available Now

By Kevin Knezevic on Jun 19, 2019 03:45 am

Ubisoft has released another update for Tom Clancy's The Division 2. Title Update 4 is now live on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, bringing a new specialization to the loot shooter: the Gunner, which comes with a new skill and its own unique weapon, the minigun.

To unlock the Gunner specialization, you'll need to complete the Special Field Research--five stages of challenges that each boast their own objectives and rewards. Once you've completed all five stages, you'll earn access to the Gunner.

Those who've purchased the Year One Pass, meanwhile, will unlock the Gunner immediately. However, you can still take on the Special Field Research challenges to unlock an assortment of exclusive cosmetics, including the following:

  • Fisticuffs and Front Flex emotes
  • Charcoal and Detritus gear dyes
  • Rosethorn and Pineapple weapon skins
  • Gunner mask and Gunner specialization uniform

As previously mentioned, the Gunner wields the minigun, a rapid-fire weapon that Ubisoft says can dish out "massive damage in short periods of time on the enemy while sustaining incoming damage thanks to its bonus armor." Gunners can also throw Riot Foam Grenades, which will cover enemies in foam and prevent them from moving. The Banshee signature skill, meanwhile, can confuse targets.

Ubisoft has a lot more content lined up for The Division 2. The game will receive three DLC episodes as part of its year-one roadmap, the first of which--DC Outskirts - Expeditions--is arriving this summer. At E3 2019, Ubisoft shared more details about these new Expeditions, which are free events that let players travel to unexplored locations to discover new narrative and gameplay opportunities.

The Division 2 launched for PS4, Xbox One, and PC this part March. It earned a 9/10 in our Division 2 review. Critic Edmond Tran wrote, "The range of enemy types continues to keep combat encounters challenging, the equipment I earn and pick up continues to feel different, valuable, and asks me to consider new ways of play. The ravaged environments continue to intrigue, and sometimes they're so stunning I find myself needing to take screenshots before I move on. It might not have much to say, but The Division 2 is a perpetual cycle of tension, relief, and reward that's difficult to stay away from."

Child's Play: How Mark Hamill Changed Chucky After The Movie Reboot Was Done Filming

By Chris E. Hayner on Jun 19, 2019 03:07 am

The Child's Play reboot movie filmed in late 2018, though at that point, nobody was signed on to give a voice to the maniacal Chucky doll. Instead, it was revealed at WonderCon in March that Star Wars and Batman: The Animated Series alum Mark Hamill was taking on the role.

It presented an intriguing situation for both Hamill and director Lars Klevberg, as the physical embodiment of Chucky and the way he moves and acts was already set in stone. Still, as Klevberg told GameSpot during a recent interview, the iconic actor was able to help shape the character in ways even he didn't expect.

"I think that I had a clear idea of what I would like to have on this. But I said to [Mark], 'I want to be open,' and so we together we could find the perfect spot of creating this character," the director explained. "And he was just amazing; it's just super professional. But what had struck me the most is--I knew he could deliver all of that. It's not like you're hiring Mark Hamill and, 'Oh, can he deliver?' Like, you knew that immediately. But the way he was feeling and presenting these small bits, like the nuance in between takes. I can give him a line, and he presents three lines... It's words, beats, like milliseconds that he waited, so it was just, he's just amazing. And voice acting is difficult because you just have your voice. it's just internal; you're putting it on a piece of canvas like a painting."

No Caption Provided

That nuance helped to establish Hamill's view of the character, whose origin story is much different from the original film. While the 1988 Child's Play saw a Chucky doll being possessed by the soul of a serial killer, the reboot instead presents Chucky as a smart toy with malfunctioning artificial intelligence.

Instead of being murderous right out of the gate, Hamill explained in a press conference for the film that this new Chucky "was really like an innocent child, just learning from what goes on around him." And in that, he was determined to protect his best friend Andy (Gabriel Bateman).

"For this movie, you understand Chucky's motivation, you understand he is going to be Andy's best friend, he's going to protect Andy and going to be his friend until the end," Klevberg said. "But he's self-aware. And self-aware entities, [the] first question is, 'What is my purpose in life? What am I here?' And that's cool with this one because Chucky kind of figures out, 'Okay, I have to be Andy's best friend and I'm going to protect him from whatever makes him sad,' but he doesn't have his experience, or skill set, or analytical gifts to understand what that means."

What that leaves the movie with is a thinking toy that reasons the only way to protect the child it has imprinted on is by killing and maiming anything it perceives as a threat. Of course, if you've seen a trailer for the new Child's Play movie, everything and everyone is a threat Chucky needs to take care of. What else would you expect from a friend until the end?

Child's Play is in theaters on June 21.

What's Coming And Going From Hulu In July 2019? Movies, TV, And Originals

By Mat Elfring on Jun 19, 2019 02:47 am

July is almost here, and that means various streaming services will be adding new content for the month. Hulu has revealed what's coming to it service in the upcoming month and what's leaving as well. And there is plenty to check out starting July 1.

There is a plethora of new content to binge on from TV shows to movies. Some of the highlights this day are the 1980 comedy Airplane, a parody of that era's disaster movies. And if you want more parodies in your life, the 1987 Star Wars parody Spaceballs also arrives that day. If you're looking for something more dramatic that will probably make you cry, you can watch the 2003 Tim Burton movie Big Fish, also releasing that day.

Celebrate the United States of America's Independence Day on July 4 with a movie that screams "American," Rocky IV. Rocky I-V will all be released on July 1, but you'll want to wait three days before streaming Rocky IV. In the 1985 film, boxer Rocky Balboa heads to Russia to take on the country's best fighter, Drago. Additionally, the movie has a robot giving Rocky's friend a birthday cake, a performance from James Brown, and Rocky running up a mountain. It is an amazing film.

Sadly, not everything that's on Hulu will be staying on the service. On July 31, Hulu is pulling a bunch of content, so there are a few things you may want to check out before they leave. The 1975 sci-fi movie Rollerball and its 2002 remake leave the service at the end of July. It is recommended you watch both of them, but keep in mind that the 2002 version has almost nothing to do with the original, and it doesn't have one moment of James Caan being confused--something the 1975 film has a lot of. But the 2002 version does have cameos of WWE's Paul Heyman and Shane McMahon.

Below, you'll find everything coming and leaving Hulu next month, and make sure to come back to GameSpot to see what's headed to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in July when that information is released.

Oh, Hey, The Long-Awaited Bloodstained Is Finally Out Now

By jeremy winslow on Jun 19, 2019 01:41 am

They say the demons come out at night, and so does Miriam the demon slayer. Famed auteur Koji Igarashi's spiritual successor to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, is out now--but you might not have realized it after some delays and the recent E3 hubbub.

Ritual of the Night recently underwent a huge graphics overhaul and made a brief appearance at E3 2019, but the buzz surrounding the game has been relatively quiet. Very few reviews have been published so far, with our own coming soon.

Iga released an announcement trailer, below, declaring Ritual of the Night will receive 13 pieces of DLC for free post-launch. The trailer goes through a variety of the game's mechanics, including accessorizing, crafting, fighting, and posing. Zangetsu, the katana-wielding protagonist of Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, is one of three playable characters. The retro-style spin-off Curse of the Moon launched in 2018 as one of the original Kickstarter's stretch goals. Yacht Club's Shovel Knight will also make an appearance and may be another of the three playable characters, based on what's seen in the launch trailer.

In a feature following a PAX East demo, we said the game is close to but not quite Castlevania. "On the whole, though, the classic sensation of quick, piston-tight platforming and combat has made the transition [to 3D]. Miriam's variety of weapons feel alternately light and swift or heavy and thumping. The level design pitched a good balance of graceful platforming, tough combat, and occasionally a blend of both."

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch version will launch next week on Tuesday, June 25.

Apex Legends Has Dragons Now, Apparently

By Steve Watts on Jun 19, 2019 01:39 am

Apex Legends has been teasing something big coming to the game, and now it appears to have arrived. Players have reported hearing and seeing dragons roaming about the map, potentially laying the groundwork for a world event to come with Season 2.

The flying beasts can be spotted in the game or on screens posted to the Apex Legends subreddit. The community has taken to calling them "Flyers" and if you bring one down you can get some loot. In a potentially related development, the Leviathan that wanders in the waters outside the map has moved significantly as well.

The trailer for Season 2 that debuted at EA Play, just before E3 2019, showed a giant lizard-like eyeball as a teaser at the very end. These creatures are significantly smaller than the one that implied, so they could be harbingers of some larger event to come.

Apex Legends' battle royale competition Fortnite has become known for big world-changing events that accompany each season, and so far Apex hasn't followed suit. Respawn has suggested that it is comfortable with a slower pace for its content drops so as to not burn out the team, but that was as compared to weekly and monthly updates. A new season could still bring big changes, so we'll have to see if a giant dragon is among them.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers For Just $40 And More Gaming Deals

By Will Fulton on Jun 19, 2019 01:22 am

All of the E3-related sales on games, consoles, and accessories may be wrapping up, but that doesn't mean an end to this summer's gaming discounts. Google Express is offering a promotion of 20% off most gaming products between now and June 30 with the code JUNESAVE19. We tested to confirm that the 20% applies on top of existing deals, making for some potentially deep discounts, particularly on accessories. Note that the discount only applies on your first order, and only scales up to $20 off, so don't expect to get huge discounts on consoles. We've highlighted several of our favorites below.

For whatever reason it doesn't appear that the discount applies to Xbox One controllers listed on Google Express, but don't worry--Amazon has a current deal running on Windows-compatible Xbox One wireless controllers and PC USB adapters for just $45. Xbox is also still offering $10 off many of its controller models directly in the Microsoft Store, in case you are willing to pay a little more for a wider variety of color options.

Google recently announced plans to get more directly involved in gaming itself with Google Stadia, the company's upcoming remote game streaming service. A limited Founders Edition of the service for early-adopters will arrive later this year, with general access rolling out for everyone else in 2020.

Best Xbox One Deals This Week: Sonic Classics, Wireless Controllers, And More (US)

By Jenae Sitzes on Jun 19, 2019 01:10 am

Now that the frenzy of E3 2019 is over, all those great game deals are no longer available, but while the big Xbox One game and console sale has ended, the Xbox Store is back on its regular schedule of offering new weekly game deals. The newest batch of Xbox One deals is available now, including a Sonic anniversary sale, discounted indie games, $10 off Xbox wireless controllers, and more.

The spotlight is on everyone's favorite speedy hedgehog this week, as Sonic the Hedgehog debuted on the Sega Genesis in North America 28 years ago this month. To celebrate, Sonic's recent games on the Xbox One are marked down along with a collection of Xbox 360 games, many of which are backward-compatible with Xbox One. For the next week, you can get the newly released competitive racer Team Sonic Racing for $30, the gorgeous, retro-style Sonic Mania for $12, and 3D platformer Sonic Forces for $15. If you feel like taking a trip down memory lane, you can also save on classics like Sonic Adventure 2 for $5 and the original Sonic the Hedgehog for $2.49, both of which can be played on Xbox One.

The Xbox Store is also highlighting discounts on games from independent developers, who can self-publish digital games on Xbox One and PC with the ID@Xbox program. Some of the best indie games to grab on sale this week include My Time At Portia for $24, The Witness for $20, Observer for $9, and The Gardens Between for $12.

Plus, if you're in the market for a new Xbox wireless controller, this is a good week to pick one up, as many styles are marked down by $10 in the Xbox Store (excluding, sadly, the new Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2). Both the Phantom White and Phantom Black special edition controllers are down to $60, and some older styles, like the pink Minecraft pig design and Armed Forces II special edition, are discounted to $55. However, consider checking Amazon first, where some wireless controllers are as cheap as $45 this week.

By Jenae Sitzes on Jun 19, 2019 01:08 am

Sony's annual Days of Play sale, which ran during E3 2019 with steep discounts on games and consoles, is finally over. But a new week means new deals, and luckily, the PlayStation Store has some eye-catching bargains available now.

You can also get Persona 4 Golden on Vita for only $12 ($10 with PS Plus) and the Persona Dancing: Endless Night Collection for $70 ($60 with PS Plus).

You can get the bundle together for only $21 ($18 with PS Plus). Monster Hunter World is also still on sale for $20, and with the Iceborne expansion beta launching this weekend for PS Plus members, there's no better time to pick up the base game.

FX's Y: The Last Man TV Adaptation Gets A New Showrunner

By Chris E. Hayner on Jun 19, 2019 01:00 am

After it was announced in April that the showrunners for FX's adaptation of the Y: The Last Man comic book series were leaving the project, it wasn't clear if the series would be delayed or was even moving forward at all. It's alive and well, though, with a new showrunner at the helm.

In a press release, FX announced that The Killing and Animal Kingdom alum Eliza Clark would take over the duties on the show as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. "Eliza Clark is an enormously talented writer and producer whose ambitious vision for Y will only enhance the mystique and allure of this powerful story," one of the network's presidents of original programming, Nick Grad, said in a statement. She will partner with fellow executive producers Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brian K. Vaughan, and Melina Matsoukas to bring the series to life.

In a statement of her own, Clark said, "A decade ago I devoured the complete Y: The Last Man series cover to cover, imagining how it might take shape on screen. It introduced me to the amazing work of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra and the complex, fascinating world of Y. I'm thrilled to tell this story and to be working with this immensely talented cast."

Y, as the TV adaptation has been titled, is set in a world where all men--save for one guy and his pet monkey Ampersand--are dead. According to FX, the series revolves around a "new world order of women" that "will explore gender, race, class, and survival."

Diane Lane will star on the series as Senator Jennifer Brown, with a supporting cast that includes Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Juliana Canfield, Marin Ireland, and Amber Tamblyn. Barry Keoghan plays Yorick Brown, the last living man on the planet.

A release date has not been announced yet but Y is expected to debut on FX in 2020.

Nintendo, Cyberpunk, And Final Fantasy 7 Topped Twitter Trends At E3 2019

By Steve Watts on Jun 19, 2019 12:52 am

With E3 2019 behind us, Twitter has revealed its top trending moments and game announcements from the annual event.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that the biggest moment overall was Nintendo's annual Direct presentation on Tuesday morning, which encompassed all of its games lineup including a surprise peek at The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. Keanu Reeves' appearance at the Xbox conference came in second place, and Square's dual showings of the Final Fantasy VII Remake and Marvel's Avengers during its press conference came in third.

Nintendo was also the most tweeted-about of any publisher, which makes sense given that its press conference was also the most tweeted moment. It was followed by Xbox, Sony, Square Enix, and Bethesda. Every publisher that held a press event, including Electronic Arts' EA Play presentation on Saturday, gained the top spot on Twitter's trending topics.

The top new games this year were FF7, Cyberpunk 2077, Breath of the Wild 2, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Avengers. Overall, the top games and franchises were Pokemon (due to Sword and Shield), Fortnite, Splatoon and Super Smash Bros Ultimate due to their tournaments, and Apex Legends.
