Fast And Furious 8's Cars Coming To Forza 7 As DLC, Free For Some

By Anonymous on Sep 26, 2017 12:18 am

A new batch of DLC vehicles for the upcoming Forza Motorsport 7 has been announced based on the latest Fast and Furious film, The Fate of the Furious. It's not a major surprise in light of past crossovers between the two franchises, but it should nonetheless be a fun DLC pack for fans of the film.

Microsoft today announced the Fate of the Furious Car Pack, which consists of 10 notable vehicles from this year's movie. These include the 1968 Dodge Charger, 2015 Jaguar F-Type, and 1951 Chevrolet Fleetline. You can see screenshots and a full list of vehicles (all of which are dubbed Fate of the Furious editions) below, as well as a trailer above.

  • 1966 Chevrolet Corvette
  • 1968 Dodge Charger
  • 2015 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe
  • 1971 Plymouth GTX
  • 2016 Subaru WRX STI
  • 2018 Dodge Demon
  • 1951 Chevrolet Fleetline Special
  • 2015 Mercedes-AMG GT S
  • 2013 Subaru BRZ
  • 2014 Local Motors Rally Fighter

This DLC pack will be available as a Day One car pack offered for free to those who buy Forza 7's Ultimate or Deluxe editions. Ultimate edition owners will get it on September 29 (thanks to the early access period available with that version of the game), while Deluxe owners get it on the game's regular release date of October 3. Anyone with the standard edition will be able to purchase the pack on its own for $10.

As noted above, this isn't the first crossover between Forza and Fast and Furious. Forza 6 and Forza Horizon 2 each featured DLC cars from the movies, and a free standalone spin-off of Horizon 2 was even released in 2015.

Every Star Trek Pilot Episode, Ranked From Worst To Best

By Anonymous on Sep 26, 2017 12:00 am

With advancements in special effects and bigger television budgets, the Star Trek series has evolved with the times to create a show that is fitting for every era. While some shows hold up and still entertain today, others aren't as good as the very first time you saw them.

With Star Trek: Discovery premiering tonight, it's only fitting that we rank every Star Trek pilot episode from worst to best. Keep in mind, this is not the same as ranking the series as a whole. That is a completely different list. Here, we're just talking about the first episode of each show.

Disclosure: GameSpot's parent company is Star Trek: Discovery producer CBS Interactive.

7. Star Trek (Original Series)

Pilot Episode: "The Cage"

Under the command of Captain Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter), the USS Enterprise receives a radio distress call from a strange planet in the Talos star group. A landing party is assembled to investigate the signal and is then beamed down to find the source. Upon finding the signal source, the crew discovers a camp of survivors from a scientific expedition that went missing 18 years prior. Among the survivors is Vina, a beautiful young woman who Captain Pike is instantly drawn to. Unfortunately, Vina isn't all she appears to be, and in Pike's hypnotized state (hypnotized by her beauty), he is captured by an alien race that lives beneath the surface.

Where does it rank? The original pilot ranks the lowest of the low because Captain Christopher Pike (played by Jeffrey Hunter) is devoid of emotion and sucks the life out of the dialogue. Frankly, it's insufferable. The production is improved by the second pilot which corrects casting missteps by adding the charismatic and charming William Shatner.

6. Star Trek: The Animated Series

Pilot Episode: "Beyond the Farthest Star"

While exploring the galaxy, the Federation Starship Enterprise becomes trapped in the orbit of a dead star. The crew discovers there is a massive derelict ship floating around this unknown star. Captain Kirk (William Shatner) beams aboard the starship with a boarding party that includes First Officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Chief Medical Officer Dr. McCoy, and Chief Engineer Scott, where they learn the star was once home to an insectoid race. From there, it's a race against time to get back to the Enterprise before the rogue ship self destructs.

Where does it rank? The pilot ranks low, but I give it props for incorporating elements of the live-action show into the animated series. The original voice cast is there, and they do the best they can, but the dialogue and animation make it a hard task to sit through.

5. Star Trek: The Next Generation

Pilot Episode: "Encounter at FarPoint"

In 2364, the new crew of Starfleet's USS Enterprise gets right into the action against Q, an omniscient figure from the Q Continuum. Q is sent to test the intelligence and the endurance of the new starfleet group. Captain Jean Luc-Picard (Patrick Stewart) is confident in his ability to lead his crew on this mission, but it isn't an easy task. Q declares that humanity is being put on trial--and deciding that their actions in the upcoming mission will be used to judge humanity's worthiness and determine their fate as a race.

Where does it rank? "Encounter at Farpoint" ranks low due to camp overload. It's as if Roddenberry was trying too hard to recreate the original series instead of giving this its own identity. The dialogue is laughably awkward, even for Star Trek.

4. Star Trek Enterprise

Pilot Episode: "Broken Bow"

We see a young Jonathan Archer on Earth in the year 2121 watching his father paint a model space craft. His father is chief principal designer of the planet's first Warp 5 engine ship. Fast forward to the year 2151, and Jonathan Archer is soon to be Captain of the Enterprise NX-01. However, test flights and missions are met with opposition from Vulcans. Breaking the chain of command, Archer goes straight to Admiral Forrest to request permission to take the new ship on a mission to the planet Qo'noS.

Where does it rank? Broken Bow ranks middle-of-the-road because it's interesting in some aspects (like taking place in the past), but it moves entirely too slowly to hold much interest. Watching more than the first episode of this series is required to truly get into the show.

3. Star Trek: Voyager

Pilot Episode: "Caretaker"

On Earth, Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Federation starship USS Voyager recruits Tim Paris, a Maquis from a maximum security prison to help track down a missing Maquis spacecraft. Leaving the Deep Space Nine space station, Voyager journeys to the Badlands, where it is scanned by a "coherent tetryon beam" before being struck by a wave that places Janeway and her crew 70,000 light years away from the federation and scrambling to find a way back.

Where does it rank? Voyager ranks high because it continued to break free of the tropes Roddenberry established in this universe. Being so far from the nearest station, Captain Janeway must rely on her crew and her wits to get them safely back to the federation--thus leaving her in the "caretaker" role.

2. Star Trek: Deep Space 9

Pilot Episode: "Emissary"

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9) finds Captain Picard passing the torch (of sorts) to Captain Benjamin Sisko, who is now in charge of the crew at the Deep Space 9 outpost station. The Bajor requested protection from a Starfleet command after the Cardassian war. However, the discovery of an unexplored wormhole near the space station expands Sisko's mission beyond protecting the Bajor. This pilot episode is action-packed, and what better way to introduce your characters then to see them in action?

Where does it rank? Deep Space 9's pilot episode ranks high on the list because it's the start of the series finding a new identify. It's diverse, well written, and not afraid to show the flaws in its crew early on. Upon multiple viewings, this show still holds up nicely in terms of action and production value.

1. Star Trek: Discovery

Pilot Episode: "The Vulcan Hello"

Discovery is set 10 years before the original series and is a precursor to the Klingon war. At this time, the Klingon houses were divided, but they soon joined forces to fight against the Federation. Captain Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), First Officer Burnham (Soniqua Martin Green), and the rest of the crew of the USS Shenzou were on a mission investigating a remote part of space. They find hostile Klingon forces, which they engage in battle.

Where does it rank? I can't give too much away, but Discovery is high on the list for going against the typical structure of Star Trek. The show is told from the perspective of First Officer Michael Burnham, and not the ship's Captain. She is also a human with a vast amount of Vulcan knowledge because she was raised by Vulcans. That's just brilliant.

Destiny 2 Servers Down For Maintenance; Offline Time Extended Two More Hours

By Anonymous on Sep 25, 2017 11:53 pm

Destiny 2 players looking to get stuck into some shootin' and lootin' today may want to keep in mind that servers for Bungie's popular shooter will be going offline for maintenance. The downtime is scheduled to begin at 6 AM PT / 2 PM BST / 11 PM AEST on September 25, and players won't be able to sign in to the game from that point. " style="word-wrap: break-word;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;color: #6DC6DD;font-weight: normal;text-decoration: underline;">Twitter that the maintenance period has been extended until 2 PM PT.]

An hour later, anyone that is already logged in to Destiny 2 will be kicked off, so plan your in-game activities accordingly; you don't want to get the boot while in a raid. Servers will undergo maintenance for a total of six hours.

The maintenance comes ahead of Faction Rallies being added to Destiny 2 on September 26. Following the weekly reset, players will be able to pledge themselves to Dead Orbit (represented by Arach Jalaal), Future War Cult (Lakshmi-2), and New Monarchy (Executor Hideo), and gather supplies for their chosen faction. You can learn more about Destiny 2's Faction Rallies here.

We're still digging deep into Destiny 2, but if you're new to the series there are some basic things you should know. You can check our Destiny 2 beginner's guide or our roundup of Destiny 2 guides, tips, and tricks for more information on how to hit the ground running.

Street Fighter 5 Adds Halloween-Inspired DLC Costumes Tomorrow

By Anonymous on Sep 25, 2017 11:02 pm

Capcom has announced another batch of DLC costumes for Street Fighter V. This selection goes on sale tomorrow, September 26, and consists of 13 outfits, including a range of Halloween and school-inspired costumes for Cammy, M. Bison, and many other characters.

To celebrate the arrival of fall and the back-to-school season, Capcom is releasing school uniforms for Cammy, Ed, and Street Fighter V's newest character, Menat. Cammy is also receiving an additional pair of outfits; the Doll's Costume is a callback to her days as M. Bison's bodyguard, while the Nostalgia Costume is based on her alternate outfit from Street Fighter IV.

Chun-Li is likewise receiving a trio of new costumes. The first is an undercover outfit, while the second and third are more leisurely beach and sleepwear. Rounding out the new batch of outfits are five Halloween-inspired costumes for Dhalsim, M. Bison, Urien, Birdie, and FANG, turning the characters into a demon, mummy, and other Halloween monsters.

Each of the aforementioned outfits retails for $4 each. Those who missed out on last year's Halloween costumes will also have another chance to pick them up; Capcom is bringing back 2016's Halloween skins in a bundle, which also includes the Spooky Arena stage.

In addition to the new DLC outfits, Capcom is releasing a new stage for Street Fighter V tomorrow: English Manor. The publisher describes it as a castle that "overlooks a sweeping landscape with the Northern Lights hovering up above." Players can purchase it for $4 or 70,000 in-game Fight Money.

Godzilla 2: Take A First Look At The Monster In Upcoming Sequel

By Anonymous on Sep 25, 2017 09:14 pm

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the upcoming sequel to 2014's blockbuster Godzilla, and it is currently in production. Now we have a first look at the film's legendary monster, which comes via director Michael Doughtery.

Doughtery posted the following image on Twitter. It's hard to know what exactly we are looking at, and that's clearly some unfinished CG, but it's unmistakably Godzilla himself looking as fearsome as ever. Check it out below:

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be the third movie in Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse, following 2014's Godzilla and this year's Kong: Skull Island. A synopsis has been released, which states that the movie "follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species--thought to be mere myths--rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance."

Godzilla: King of the Monsters stars Vera Farmiga, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Sally Hawkins, and Charles Dance, plus Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown. It hits theaters on March 22, 2019.

In related news, the fourth MonsterVerse movie, Godzilla v Kong, is expected in 2020. Last month, director Adam Wingard explained that he hoped to match the monster mayhem with emotional drama. "It's a massive monster brawl movie," he said. "There's lots of monsters going crazy on each other, but at the end of the day I want there to be an emotional drive to it. I think that's what's going to make it cool."

"I really want you to take those characters seriously," Wingard continued. "I want you to be emotionally invested, not just in the human characters, but actually in the monsters. If I have my way, I want people to really be teary-eyed at the end of the movie, and be that invested in what's going on."

Nintendo has announced a slate of DLC for Fire Emblem Warriors. The hack-and-slash Switch and New 3DS game will receive three additional content packs following its release, which include new characters and weapons from different Fire Emblem titles.

The game's first DLC pack is scheduled to arrive this December and features content inspired by the series' most recent new installment, Fire Emblem Fates. DLC Pack 2 will follow in February 2018 and includes characters and items taken from Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon. The final DLC pack arrives a month later, in March 2018, and is themed after Fire Emblem Awakening.

Each of the three DLC packs retails individually for $9/£8.09. Nintendo will also offer a season pass that bundles all three together for a discounted $20/£18. Those who purchase the season pass will also receive a bonus bridal costume for Lucina, which you can see above.

In addition to its DLC plans, Nintendo has announced several new characters who'll be playable in Fire Emblem Warriors. During Tokyo Game Show, the company revealed three new heroes: Caeda and Tiki from Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, and Celica from Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. Earlier this month, Nintendo announced that the fan-favorite hero Lyn from Fire Emblem for Game Boy Advance will also be playable in Warriors.

Terminator 6 Will Ignore Terminator Genisys, Arnold Schwarzenegger Reveals

By Anonymous on Sep 25, 2017 07:56 pm

It was recently reported that Terminator creator James Cameron is to return to the sci-fi franchise to oversee a new movie that will reunite original stars Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Now Schwarzenegger has spoken about the plans for the new Terminator movie and revealed that it will ignore the events of 2015's flop Terminator: Genisys.

At the Experience With Arnold Schwarzenegger event in Birmingham, UK, the Austrian action icon was asked by audience members about the movie. As reported by Terminator Fans, he confirmed that it will have nothing to do with the last Terminator film, and that, not surprisingly, it won't just be titled Terminator 6. In addition, Schwarzenegger revealed that Hamilton had already started training for the role of Sarah Connor.

No Caption Provided

While Schwarzenegger has been talking about a potential return to the franchise for a while, Hamilton's involvement was first confirmed by Cameron last week. Although the character of Sarah Connor has appeared various times throughout the series Hamilton has has not played her since 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Cameron said that her return would "make a huge statement."

The next Terminator film will be directed by Deadpool's Tim Miller, with a story overseen by Cameron and Miller. Television-style writers' rooms are becoming increasingly popular on big franchise movies, and the new Terminator will follow this model. Writers who will work on the story include DC veteran David Goyer, Cameron's Dark Angel collaborator Charles Eglee, and Josh Friedman, who created the Terminator TV spinoff The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

There had been some confusion about whether a new Terminator would actually happen. Terminator: Genisys was originally intended to be the first part of a new trilogy, but its box office failure ended this plan. Subsequent reports suggested that Paramount had abandoned the idea of any more movies; however, Cameron's renewed involvement has now ensured that the series does have a future.

The Best Square-Enix Toys And Merchandise At Tokyo Game Show 2017

By Anonymous on Sep 25, 2017 07:30 pm

Square-Enix is a regular fixture on the Tokyo Game Show floor, offering an impressive range of merchandise representing its most popular games, old and new. Soundtracks are by far the most common item, but there are plenty of toys to look at if music isn't your thing. Join us on a tour through Square-Enix's Tokyo Game Show 2017 merchandise booth, and keep an eye out for your favorite series; you may find something special (read: expensive) you never knew existed.

NieR: Automata was a surprise hit earlier this year, and its soundtrack lives on as a mesmerizing treat. Video game soundtracks on vinyl are also a recent phenomenon, and here we have a look at some of the original art created for the upcoming vinyl releases. Speaking of...

Whoa! Hold the phone, I thought these soundtracks weren't supposed to release until December? Square-Enix pulled a fast one and offered early copies to TGS attendees. On the left you can see a box set that contains selections of tracks from NieR: Replicant, NieR: Gestalt, and NieR: Automata. To the right are the individual soundtracks within. You could save a few hundred yen by purchasing the individual releases, but who doesn't want the sweet boxset with the fiendish mask worn by NieR's lead creative, Yoko Taro? (I couldn't resist.)

Well there's a face we haven't seen in a while. What we have here is a series of orthographic sketches devised to inform Square-Enix's upcoming figure of Xenogears' iconic mech, Welltall. Before there was Xenoblade Chronicles, or Xenosaga, Xenogears was the only Xeno-game on the block, and it's viewed by many as a long-lost classic that never quite got its due. Square-Enix will bring Welltall back as a new Wander Arts series figure down the road, and while it was a bit disappointing to miss out on seeing an actual prototype at TGS, it's nevertheless gratifying to see Xenogears get some love, nearly 20 years after its release.

Speaking of Wander Arts, here's a look at a new figure of a Wanzer mech from Square-Enix's Front Mission series.

You know what they say: one good Wanzer deserves another...

...and another. Seriously, these mechs look great in person, and may be the perfect accompaniment to the recently announced Left Alive, the newly announced game purportedly set in the Front Mission universe, coming in 2018.

Odin rides again, making his second appearance as a Play Arts Kai figure. This rendition of Odin was hard to place at first, but that's because it doesn't belong to a mainline Final Fantasy game: it's Odin as seen in 2015's arcade-exclusive Dissidia Final Fantasy, the basis for the upcoming Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.

Keen-eyed fans of Final Fantasy may also notice that this is one of the most accurate renditions of Odin compared to Yoshitaka Amano's original concept art for the character's debut in Final Fantasy III.

A new Play Arts Kai variant of Bahamut strikes a pose for the camera.

Here we see Zack (Cloud Strife's former best friend at Shinra) from Final Fantasy VII and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

Everyone's favorite corporate enforcer-turned vampire, Vincent Valentine, showed up at TGS too. This new figure is still a work in progress, hence the drab paint job.

Lightning also gets an updated figure to ring in the arrival of Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT.

Terra, a main character from Final Fantasy VI with a tragic story, looking ready for the release of Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT.

Advent Children took Final Fantasy VII's designs and bumped them up a notch. Here we see Cloud Strife riding Fenrir, his elaborate motorcycle.

While Sephiroth appears to be a pre-existing figure, Cloud on the right has been newly minted to hype up the much-anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Final Fantasy VII's Cid finally gets a modern figure from Square-Enix, and it appears he's not alone...

Cait Sith is along for the ride too!

Sora will make a comeback when Kingdom Hearts III comes out, but until that day comes, you can look forward to a pair of new figures coming soon.

Here's the alternate Sora, featuring the Guardian Form color scheme from Kingdom Hearts III.

This figure of Balthier from Final Fantasy XII came out earlier this year, but when it looks this good, why not show it off again.

The same goes for this top-notch Gabranth figure.

And why not, bunny-eared Fran for good measure.

Aranea Highwind (who shares a surname with Final Fantasy VII's version of Cid) will make her Play Arts Kai debut in early 2018.

Now onto the cute Final Fantasy stuff, namely Chocobos and Moogles!

And where there are Moogles, Cactuars and Tonberrys are sure to follow.

Beyond the impressive soundtracks we showed off earlier, NieR: Automata made a strong showing in the figure section as well.

Some of the NieR figures were on the cuter end of the spectrum.

But for the most part, NieR's figures opted for a more authentic look.

And no figure (or android) would be complete without swappable body parts.

Not to leave the Enix side of Square-Enix out, here we see a smattering of plushies representing iconic Dragon Quest enemies, like the sizable King Slime.

And after you've filled out your sheet with little marks next to every item you want, time to line up and pay the piper.

For more behind-the-scenes looks into Tokyo Game Show 2017, head over to our TGS cosplay gallery to see some of the best homespun and high-end costumes from the show floor. For a more encompassing look at TGS' big and bizarre sights, look no further: we've got you covered.

Project Cars 2

By Anonymous on Sep 25, 2017 04:06 pm

My first race in Project Cars 2 was a learning experience, to say the least. After a couple of years away from the wheel of Slightly Mad Studios' simulation racing series, getting reacquainted with its uncompromising style was no easy feat. The blind turns and fluctuating elevations of Scotland's Knockhill Racing Circuit played havoc with my rusty skills, as I spun out myriad times throughout my first practice session, making the trackside gravel my undesirable home. It was not the start I had envisioned, and I could have let it get to me--thwarted, as I was, by a quick sprint around the Scottish countryside. But this is where the tinkering began.

I started tuning my Formula Rookie car to adjust to the particularities of this charming British track, softening the anti-roll bar to limit oversteering, and adjusting gear ratios to get a tad more speed down the straights. With each passing lap I gradually became more accustomed to Knockhill's tricky corners, learning how to approach each one with guile and gusto. Before long I wasn't just completing laps without incident, but setting competitive times to rival the competition, and fondly recalling similar moments throughout my time with Slightly Mad's first game in the series. It's a singular, almost assuredly niche thrill; yet it was this focus on learning and adapting to the various intricacies of both car and track that made Project Cars so appealing--and which still rings true in its sequel.

For all its strengths, however, the first Project Cars was hindered by some notable flaws. Inconsistent handling, inadequate gamepad support, dim-witted AI, and numerous, disruptive bugs regularly plagued the experience. Thankfully, these issues have been mostly addressed in Project Cars 2. For one, the physics and driving model have been much improved, with less disconnect between your actions and those of your car. There's an increased weightiness to these fuel-guzzling beasts that firmly plants them on the road, and a pliability that makes pushing them up to and over the limit a viable strategy, resulting in some incredibly tense and exciting moments.

Gamepad support is also marginally better. Where playing with a pad was once perplexingly unapproachable, it's now manageable at least--albeit significantly lagging behind the fidelity and one-to-one feedback of a dedicated racing wheel. Out of the box, the handling is quite understeer heavy, too, so you'll probably want to fiddle with the settings until it feels more comfortable. And there are some difficulties communicating exactly what the car is doing without the advantages of force feedback, particularly when the back end starts to spin out from underneath you. There's a distant, almost loose feel to the handling, and this makes playing without stability control more difficult than it would otherwise be. Racing with a gamepad is still nowhere near perfect or even close to the likes of Forza, but these adjustments do enough to make it more playable than the first game. With this in mind, I would still hesitate to recommend Project Cars 2 to anyone without a racing wheel.

Despite the improvements made behind the wheel, Project Cars 2's most eye-catching aspect might just be the sheer breadth of cars, tracks, and motorsports on offer. With 180 cars to choose from, 60 tracks, and 29 motorsports, you can easily go from kicking up dirt and gravel in a Rallycross event in Hell, to careening around Imola in Enzo Ferrari's magnificent namesake. Maybe you'll race wheel-to-wheel in white-knuckle stock cars for the full 500 miles of the Indianapolis 500, usher a Formula X car around the twisting turns of Monaco's opulent street course, or precariously rip through the historic 8.75 miles of the original Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in an Aston Martin DBR1/300. The extensive variety on-hand is sumptuous, and almost every track and car is intricately detailed, with phenomenal audio design bringing each bottled-up rocket of horsepower to life with a delectable symphony of shifting gears, screeching tires, and roaring engines.

The weather effects in Project Cars 2 are best-in-class, and the palpable effect they have on each and every race proves they're not just for show either

Meanwhile, a dynamic weather system that encompasses everything from emphatic thunderstorms and blizzards, to a hazy summer's day--plus an impressive day/night cycle--complements the action, and turns an endurance race at Le Mans into a keen test of attrition and strategy. As the sky cracks open and unleashes a torrent of rain, puddles will gradually form on the track and must be avoided lest you aquaplane into the nearest wall. Survive this brush with death and the hot asphalt will dissipate any pools of water, yet your relief won't last for long as the sun begins to disappear behind the trees. Suddenly corners aren't quite as recognisable as they once were as shadows cast blind spots over the track; and before long you're driving in nothing but pitch black darkness, with only your headlights to guide you. The weather effects in Project Cars 2 are best-in-class, and the palpable effect they have on each and every race proves they're not just for show either.

The best way to cycle through this plethora of motorsports is in the career mode, which takes you globetrotting from one racing discipline to another. You're still free to choose where you begin your driving adventure--whether it's in the lowly rungs of kart racing or maybe in the more potent brutes of GT4--but there's added structure this time around. The high-end championships are locked away until you've made at least some progress, and single-race invitationals mix up the pacing so it's less of a slog. The career mode is, however, surprisingly restrictive when it comes to competing in these various championships. If you finish outside of the top three, it's deemed a failure and you're asked to retry the entire championship again. This can be utterly demoralising when you've just completed ten races or so, and I'm not sure why leading the midfield pack comes with such a harsh punishment. It actively discouraged me from raising the AI difficulty until I knew I could consistently place in the top three, and it feels like a completely misguided decision. If you've started a championship and don't quite fancy it, it's also needlessly difficult to quit. The only way to do so is by starting each race and retiring to the pits, which is very time-consuming.

While these issues are disappointing, Project Cars 2's most glaring faults lie with the AI and the vast number of bugs that constantly crop up. The AI is slightly improved over the first game; it's less rigid, has more spatial awareness when racing wheel-to-wheel, and will make human-esque mistakes, particularly in adverse weather conditions. But for every moment of fair and balanced racing, there's another example where they'll nudge you off the road, shunt you in the backside, or cause an 18-car pileup on the first corner. I can't count the amount of times the AI has spoiled a race by mindlessly crashing into each other at the very first hint of a bend in the road. It's absurd.

The AI is also a constant nuisance in qualifying. It will set consistent lap times when you're out on the track, but as soon as you skip to the end of a session after a seemingly good job, it will inexplicably gain a good five seconds on your best lap time, even if there's not enough time left to do so. I've also encountered a few notable instances where I've qualified in first, only to get bumped into last place as soon as the race begins. The race director is inconsistent, too, dishing out penalties for no discernible reason. If you play in the rain at Monaco, the tunnel will flood with water and is almost impossible to drive on. And any cosmetic damage you sustain will remain after restarting a session, even if that includes missing wheels.

All of these issues, whether they're disruptive or comical, paint a picture of a game that wasn't quite ready to come out of the oven. Multiplayer races mitigate some of these flaws, and are arguably the best way to play, but the online servers are sparsely populated, resulting in a lot of waiting around to race maybe four or five other people, if you're lucky. I also suffered multiple crashes that only occurred during, or when trying to join, multiplayer sessions.

When it all works as intended, Project Cars 2 is a brilliant simulation racer--provided you're playing with a wheel. It's ambitious in scope and depth, and the sheer breadth of available motorsports almost guarantees there's something for everyone to sink their teeth into. It's a shame, then, that there's always this nagging feeling in the back of your mind that a bug or moment of AI madness will disrupt the whole thing--and more often than not, it will. These issues may be ironed out in the coming weeks and months, but with potentially stiff competition on the very-near horizon, Slightly Mad Studios might not have enough time to capture the hearts and minds of video game racing fans before they move on to pastures new.

In the week ending September 23, there were a couple of brand new entries in the top ten, with Bandai Namco's Project Cars 2 arriving at No.2 and Nintendo's Pokken Tournament DX for Switch at No.5. Grand Theft Auto V, a mainstay since its release, spends its 210th week on the chart at No.6.

Oculus Founder Palmer Luckey Says He Is Working On "Very Exciting Things"

By Anonymous on Sep 25, 2017 12:38 pm

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey, who left Oculus earlier this year, is staying in the virtual reality industry. Speaking at the Tokyo Game Show this week, Luckey confirmed his new venture but declined to share more details.

"I have a new company; I can't talk about my projects too much yet, but I'm still working in the virtual reality industry on some very exciting things," he said at an appearance at an HTC Vive event, as reported by RoadToVR.

He went on to say that he does not want to be seen "as an Oculus person," because his ambitions are grander than one company alone.

"Don't think of me as an Oculus person. Just think of me as a VR person," he said. "Everything. Sony, HTC, other companies. Everything."

In June, The New York Times reported that, among Luckey's start-up ideas, was technology that could be used for border-crossing security. The system apparently uses "light detecting and ranging" technology, along with infrared sensors.

From the report:

"Those familiar with the plan say Mr. Luckey believes his system, which can be mounted on telephone poles, can be built far more cost effectively than Mr. Trump's proposed wall on the Mexican border--and with fewer obstacles from landowners."

Luckey sold Oculus to Facebook in 2014 for $2 billion. He attracted negative attention last year when it was discovered that he had financially supported a pro-Donald Trump political group responsible for "s***posting" anti-Hillary Clinton memes. This led to a number of developers pulling support for Oculus VR products. Luckey later apologized.

Earlier this year, Facebook was ordered to pay $500 million to Bethesda parent company ZeniMax as part of a lawsuit alleging that virtual reality technology it owns was stolen and used to develop the Oculus Rift. During the years-long process, ZeniMax specifically targeted Luckey, claiming that he "lacked the training, expertise, resources, or know-how to create commercially viable VR technology, his computer programming skills were rudimentary, and he relied on ZeniMax's computer program code and games to demonstrate the prototype Rift."

In July, Facebook permanently dropped the price of the Oculus Rift/Touch Controller bundle to $500, bringing it in line with the price of a similar headset/controller PlayStation VR bundle.

PUBG Passes 1.5M Concurrent Users, Dev Considering Single-Player, And New Car Revealed

By Anonymous on Sep 25, 2017 11:42 am

Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, one of the biggest and most popular games on planet Earth right now, continues to grow. The game has now crossed 1.5 million concurrent users on Steam. That's a few hundred thousand more than 1.29 million that DOTA 2--a free-to-play game--had at its own highest peak in March 2016. DOTA 2 and PUBG are apparently the only two games in Steam's history to pass 1 million peak concurrent players.

You can see more peak concurrent user figures for Steam games below, via analyst Daniel Ahmad. PUBG's sustained performance is pretty remarkable.

In other news about Battlegrounds, Playerunknown himself, Brendan Greene, said in a Reddit AMA that he would "love" to add a single-player campaign to PUBG. It hasn't happened yet and it might not soon because, understandably, developer Blue Hole is quite busy with continued support of the PC edition and the upcoming Xbox One version.

"I would love to add a single-player campaign to the game," he said. "I think the island we have could be a great location for an interesting story, but unfortunately we just don't have the time or the resources for this at the moment!"

Greene also shared an image of one of the three new vehicles coming to PUBG. It's a vehicle that looks like a Volkswagen Bus, so it should be pretty wonderful to see this beast zipping around the battlefield.

Playerunknown's Battlegrounds launched in Early Access this year and has been extraordinarily successful, recently surpassing 10 million copies sold on PC. Greene said there are no plans to raise the game's price when it leaves Early Access and officially launches. An Xbox One version, which is being published by Microsoft, is slated to arrive in the Game Preview program later this year, but it may not be exclusive to the console permanently.

Sony Made Real Platinum Trophies For An Australian Contest

By Anonymous on Sep 25, 2017 10:43 am

Earning Platinum Trophies in PlayStation games is a challenging and rewarding experience. Today, Sony announced a new Platinum-themed promotion, and the prize is an actual, real-world Platinum trophy--but it's extremely limited and only available in Australia.

The PlayStation Plus Platinum Hunters campaign challenges players to earn the Platinum trophy (which you do by completing all tasks in a particular game) in a specific game. You then have to take a screenshot and upload to Facebook or Twitter and tagging @PlayStationAU. You also have to use the #PlusPlatinumHunters hashtag.

Do all of that and you'll have a chance to win one of four Platinum trophies that Sony made for this campaign. The first game in the promotion is FIFA 18, which launches through early access on September 26. Other games in the program include Gran Turismo Sport (October 18), Call of Duty: WWII (November 3), and one more to be announced later.

You can see the full Terms & Conditions for the PlayStation Plus Platinum Hunters promotion here. Check out images of the trophy below and in the video above.
