Microsoft's latest weekly sale on Xbox One and Xbox 360 games for Xbox Live Gold members has begun, and it's one that's focused almost exclusively on the Call of Duty series.
Unfortunately, this sale doesn't entail the latest Call of Duty game, Advanced Warfare; instead, it's older games like Ghosts and Black Ops II that are discounted.
If you're not in the market for a Call of Duty, you've got only two other choices: Xbox One's Never Alone and We Are Doomed are the only other games on sale, with the latter's 10 percent discount only offering savings of $1.
Read on for the full list of deals, which are available from now through April 27 and require an Xbox Live Gold membership.
The competitive gaming scene for shooter games is dominated by Call of Duty and Counter-Strike, but could Nintendo's new family-friendly shooter Splatoon ever join the ranks? It might seem like a stretch. But producer Hisashi Nogami told GameSpot that the non-violent Wii U game where you shoot ink instead of bullets has been designed to support a variety of playstyles--including ultra-competitive.
"The guiding impulse for making Splatoon was not to say, 'Let's make a shooting game for beginners, but a game that people are going to be able to enjoy with a variety of playstyles, variety of skill levels,'" he said when asked if he thought Splatoon would be a good fit for professional competitive gaming. "And so it's not outside the realm of possibility that the game could be enjoyed in that way."
"Personally speaking, I feel like there is sort of a sport element to Splatoon in that you're constantly adjusting to situations on the battlefield; looking, 'Oh this space is open here, let's attack,' or, 'Oh, we need to defend here.' So there's this offense-defense dynamic," he added. "And in that way [it] resembles a sport."
Splatoon, however, is lacking one major feature found in almost every other competitive shooter: voice chat. The game won't support this communication method due to toxicity concerns, co-director Yusuke Amano said previously. Instead, Nintendo suggests that players use the bird's eye view on the Wii U GamePad to determine their strategy.
A family-friendly twist on the classic arena deathmatch formula, Splatoon challenges players not necessarily to shoot opponents directly all the time, but to cover as much of the level in their own team's paint color. For more on how the game works, check out the video below.
We also quizzed Nogami about the origins of Splatoon. He said the idea was born within Nintendo's Entertainment Analysis and Development (EAD) division, which is also behind iconic games like Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
"The concept was making a game that wasn't tied into any of our pre-existing franchises and that was going to be its own thing," Nogami said. "And we started by at first getting our team together; and at that point there were a lot of different competing ideas but Splatoon was the one we ended up going with."
From within this starting point, Nintendo designers built a prototype for what would ultimately become the octopus-themed shooter that GameSpot critic Peter Brown contends could be Nintendo's next big thing. The team wasn't dead-set on ink being a central part of the game from the outset, however.
"It was going to start as a competitive, team-based game in which people would shoot ink and be able to hide in that ink, compet[ing] against each other by spreading territory and taking territory," Nogami said. "And that's the next step from that initial concept phase."
"That isn't to say we started by saying, 'OK we're going to make a game in which you spray ink.' More that, in wanting to make a strategic, team-based game, exploring the game logic that arose from that desire, the ink was just sort of the medium that naturally arose from that exploration that they made on the team."
Splatoon arrives May 29 exclusively for Wii U. Nintendo has also teamed up with Best Buy to offer a $300 Splatoon-themed Wii U bundle that comes with a copy of the game.
Just days after the release of its first patch, Grand Theft Auto V for PC has been updated once again, resolving more of the issues that have been cropping up for players during its first week of availability.
Among these are continuing problems with appearance changes when transferring GTA Online characters from consoles to PC. Last week's patch included a fix for a problem where your "eyebrows or other facial features could change erroneously," which has the makings of a hilarious (if obnoxious) bug. Today's patch 335.1 addresses a problem where facial features don't save after transferring from Xbox 360 or PS3.
Another fix involves an issue where players would get "stuck in the clouds" (where you wait between online matches) when they voted to quick restart the Humane Labs heist. Given that's a common thing to do after failing a heist--which isn't hard to do if you have even one person make a mistake--and how long GTA Online's load times can be, this was potentially a very frustrating bug, as funny as it may sound.
Also of note in this patch is the addition of a benchmark test in the main menu, as well as a resolution for the Windows Media Player problem. Players that didn't have WMP installed were unable to install GTA V, but following this patch, it's no longer a requirement--instead you'll only need Windows Media Foundation.
Read on for the full list of patch notes, courtesy of Rockstar's support site. If your issue is not addressed, check out our list of workarounds.
Players can no longer purchase more vehicles than their properties can store.
Players can now launch a video card benchmark test from the main menu.
Fixed an issue where facial features would not save correctly when transferring a character from Xbox 360 or PS3 and changing genders while editing the character's appearance.
Fixed an issue where players could become stuck in the clouds when voting to quick restart the Humane Labs Heist.
Fixed an issue where markers in the Rockstar Editor could not be deleted with the mouse.
Fixed various audio recording issues with Rockstar Editor clips.
Fixed an issue where the Yacht would not appear in some recorded Rockstar Editor clips.
Fixed a rare issue where some Rockstar Editor clips could not be opened for editing.
Fixed an issue where the GTA V Launcher would not display the correct amount of time remaining for file downloads.
The Steam overlay has been moved to prevent it from covering up Launcher buttons.
Fixed an issue where the game would not save your settings when restarting in some instances.
Fixed a rare issue where the Steam version of the game would crash right after launching.
Windows Media Player is no longer required to install GTA V. Instead, Windows Media Foundation will be required.
Fixed an issue where the game would show the pause menu without player input.
Fixed an issue where the max frame rate would be incorrectly low in rare cases.
Destiny fans eager to learn more about the upcoming expansion, House of Wolves, don't have much longer to wait. Publisher Activision announced today that Bungie will hold a special livestream event tomorrow, April 22, where the developer will give viewers a virtual tour of The Reef, one of the new social spaces coming in the House of Wolves expansion.
On-hand during the livestream event will be Bungie community manager David "Deej" Dague, creative director Christopher Barrett, and a community member who goes by the name Gothalion. League of Legends developer Riot Games is nearly set to move into the new campus it announced in 2013, and it's sure to make you jealous.
Located in western Los Angeles, CA, the new campus isn't far from the studio's previous offices in Santa Monica. It is, however, much larger--the new space is a whopping 284,000 square feet. Back in 2013, the LA Times suggested the 15-year lease Riot signed could have been Southern California's largest in half a decade.
Although it's yet to fully move in, Riot shared some pictures on its blog of what its employees will be coming to work to every day. That includes the entrance pictured above, which features Annie and Tibbers from League of Legends, as well as screens showcasing fan-made artwork and cosplay.
Elsewhere, there's a play area, complete with computers and various arcade games. There are also almost 100 breakout rooms, four atriums, and an outdoor area that appears to feature a large-scale chessboard where the pieces sit on the ground.
You can check out more images in the gallery below. Riot--which has been named one of the best places to work in the past--says it'll continue to share more from the new campus as it gets settled in.
Series creator Ed Boon, never one to shy away from teasing things on Twitter, recently responded to a question asking about certain characters being added to the game. Specifically, he was asked whether we'll see non-playable characters from the game's story mode made accessible to players. To this, Boon responded, "[You] mean like a 'Story Pack'?"
There are a number of characters who have been playable in previous Mortal Kombat games, like Baraka, Rain, and Sindel, who are not only present in the game's story mode, but are challengers that you'll have to fight. Despite this, they aren't playable, although a modder recently got these characters working on PC to some extent.
Boon's tease didn't make it explicitly clear that a Story Pack would be released as premium DLC, although after learning that microtransactions were available for the game's easy Fatalities, it's hard to blame anyone for making that assumption.
Still, developer NetherRealm Studios and publisher Warner Bros. aren't entirely averse to giving stuff away; the most recent patch added a free costume, something that will be the case with every patch going forward, according to a tweet from Boon.
We already knew that CD Projekt Red's upcoming open-world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was going to be a massive game in terms of how long it will take you to complete it. But now the developer has shared new insight into just how large the Witcher 3 world is by releasing the first images of the game's map.
You can see the map images and hear directly from CD Projekt Red developers in GameSpot's new video feature below, which we filmed on-site at the studio's office in Poland earlier this year.
You'll notice that The Witcher 3's world isn't just one big map; it's actually broken into two maps: a smaller Prologue map and the larger Northern Realm. There is also an archipelago destination that you can visit only by boat. Traveling to this location is one of the few instances in The Witcher 3 where you'll encounter a loading screen.
CD Projekt Red also teases that what you see in the video below represents only The Witcher 3's mortal realm. The game also has regions described as fantastical and unnatural, but the developer is keeping official details under wraps for now so as not to spoil story elements.
Watch the video below to learn more about The Witcher 3's vast world. The video is the second installment in a three-part video series we're airing this week. You can watch the first episode here, while the third will debut tomorrow.
CD Projekt Red on Tuesday released an all-new behind-the-scenes video for upcoming open-world role-playing game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Walking you through the video is none other than Game of Thrones actor Charles Dance, who plays Tywin Lannister on HBO's hit TV show.
As was announced in August 2013, Dance plays the role of Emperor Emhyr var Emreis, the leader of the Empire of Nilfgaard, in The Witcher 3.
In the video, Dance talks about the experience of working on his first ever video game.
Following its release last year for consoles, professional wrestling game WWE 2K15 will come to PC later this spring, 2K Sports announced Tuesday. The publisher said in a press release that the PC edition of WWE 2K15 will offer the same experience as the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions. The game was also released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
The PC version of WWE 2K15 comes with everything found in the console editions, as well as immediate access to to special versions of fighters Sting and Hulk Hogan. These were previously pre-order bonuses.
Perhaps the most exciting piece of news around the PC version of WWE 2K15 is that DLC released previously for the console versions will be free for the new computer edition. This includes content like the WCW and NXT Arrival packs, along with new Showcase modes like "Hall of Pain" and "Path of the Warrior." All told, PC players will receive 36 extra characters, four new managers, 26 matches, and 46 single-player stories for free.
"It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that that's a pretty awesome deal," cover star John Cena said in a statement.
"I grew up playing games on my PC," Cena added. "Texas Instruments, Commodore 64… I was a huge PC gamer growing up, so this is big. Not only for our fans, but for me personally as well. Fans may not know this, but I was such a huge PC gamer that I bought a living room entertainment system just to play PC games back in the day. So don't be surprised if you flash forward 50 years and yours truly is sitting in his living room playing computer games!"
2K Sports did not announce an official release date for the PC edition of WWE 2K15, saying only that its arrival for computers is "only weeks away." System requirements have also not yet been announced.
The WWE 2K franchise is growing not only with a forthcoming PC version, but the first-ever WWE 2K simulation game was released earlier this month for mobile devices.

Although nothing has been decided yet, Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment is currently speaking with Microsoft about the possibility of bringing 2010's psychological thriller Alan Wake to Xbox One.
"I would love that to happen," Remedy creative director Sam Lake said in an interview with Polygon. "Nothing has happened yet, but we are discussing this possibility with Microsoft. I hope it happens, we'll see."
If Alan Wake were to come to Xbox One, it would also likely include the game's 2012 follow-up, American Nightmare, Lake added.
Asked if Remedy, which owns the rights to Alan Wake, would consider bringing a possible remastered port to PlayStation 4 or Wii U, Lake replied, "Highly unlikely."
It's not all that surprising to hear an Xbox One version of Alan Wake might be in the cards. After all, a recent Microsoft survey suggested that the company was exploring a remastered Xbox One version of the original as a pre-order incentive for Quantum Break. That game was recently delayed to 2016.
Now, Lake has teased that Alan Wake 2--should it ever come to frution--could see a multiplatform release. While the original game was only released for Xbox and PC, a possible sequel could end up on whatever platforms that make the most sense.
"When it comes to sequels it's our thing, we can do whatever makes sense and what's best for the franchise overall," Lake said.
"But obviously it depends on many different things. I think that regardless of the platform, a good sequel--while it continues the story of the original one--it's still something that someone who hasn't played the original one can enjoy and jump on board and dive into the setting and the world and enjoy themselves."
The Alan Wake franchise, comprising the original game and American Nightmare, has sold more than 4.5 million copies.
Nintendo on Tuesday announced a new Wii U bundle focused around the company's upcoming family friendly ink-splattering shooter, Splatoon. The $300 Wii U bundle comes with a deluxe system and copies of Splatoon and Nintendo Land. Splatoon comes via download code, while Nintendo Land is pre-installed.
The special Splatoon bundle will be sold only at Best Buy in the United States. It launches alongside the game itself on May 29.
A family-friendly twist on the classic arena deathmatch formula, Splatoon challenges players not to shoot their opponents directly, but to cover as much of the level's walls and floor in their team's own paint color.
The game also boasts some unique and interesting movement abilities and of course contains some of Nintendo's trademark charm. For a closer look at Splatoon, check out some images in the gallery below.
Japanese developer Toylogic on Tuesday announced that the Xbox One version of its free-to-play action game Happy Wars will be released this coming Friday, April 24. The game accidentally went live earlier this month, but was swiftly removed from the Xbox Store.
Happy Wars was originally released for Xbox 360 back in 2012 as the platform's first free-to-play game. It has since tallied nearly 10 million downloads, Toylogic announced today. This is up from 8 million in 2014.
New to Happy Wars? It's a large-scale online multiplayer game that offers six unique classes and loads of customization options. Check out our review for more on how it plays.
People who already played the Xbox 360 version of Happy Wars will see their progress data (items and rank) transfer over to the Xbox One edition. The new Xbox One version also comes with a split-screen feature that allows up to four people to play on a single console.
Of course, the new edition also comes with better visuals, along with improved lighting, special effects, and textures. In addition, Toylogic said it has updated the Xbox One version of Happy Wars with the 20+ patches that have been released for the Xbox 360 version to date. These updates have included things like more game modes, classes, stages, and items, and new Xbox One players will get all of that from day one.
Happy Wars is also available on PC through Steam. Though Happy Wars is a free-to-play game, players can also spend real-world money to buy things like extra in-game currency and customization packs, among other things. You can watch a trailer for the Xbox One edition of Happy Wars below.
Not only will video game peripheral company Mad Catz make new plastics instruments for upcoming music game Rock Band 4, but the company has now reached a deal to co-publish the game itself.
Under the terms of the agreement, Mad Catz will be responsible for worldwide retail sales, promotion, and distribution for Rock Band 4 the game and its hardware bundles. Meanwhile, Harmonix will handle Rock Band 4 digital sales and content, such as DLC tracks and more.
As mentioned previously, Mad Catz is also working on new wireless guitar, bass, and drum controllers for Rock Band 4. The deal announced today is an extension of the previous partnership between Mad Catz and Harmonix, which saw Mad Catz make a number of guitar peripherals for Rock Band 3.
"We're excited to extend our agreement with Harmonix, and are confident that Mad Catz' global sales force, distribution channels, and retail marketing expertise will deliver the retail success we believe Rock Band 4 will achieve in 2015 and beyond," Mad Catz president and chief executive officer Darren Richardson said.
Harmonix product manager Daniel Sussman added: "We couldn't be happier to be working closely with Mad Catz to deliver Rock Band 4 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to a worldwide audience this year."
More information about Rock Band 4 will be shared during E3, which is now just two months away.
Joining Rock Band 4 this fall will be Guitar Hero Live from Activision. The first installment in the series since 2010's Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, Guitar Hero Live is also making a number of interesting advancements to the traditional Guitar Hero series. You can read lots more about that game here.
The William J. Clinton Library has posted a photo of Hillary Clinton doing what so many others did in the early 1990s: playing GameBoy. The photo you see below was taken on April 6, 1993 on her flight from Austin, Texas to Washington, DC. At this time, Bill Clinton was President and she was the First Lady.
It's tough to determine what game Hillary Clinton was playing in the photo, but it was probably Tetris. As spotted by Polygon, a 2002 New York Times story reveals she was particularly fond of that game. And in a April 1993 interview with Time [PDF], Hillary Clinton joked that she was "addicted" to Tetris.
"I have become quite a fan of GameBoy," she said at the time, noting that she bought her own so she wouldn't have to keep borrowing her daughter's.
"I really became addicted in the hospital," she said with a laugh. "I'm going to seek treatment."
Vox also notes that the photo was snapped at a challenging time in Hillary Clinton's life, as it was taken the day before her father passed away. She had been at his bedside in the hospital for weeks.
Video game retailer GameStop has announced a new charitable effort to support the Ronald McDonald Houses, a charity run by the fast food giant McDonald's.
As part of the campaign, GameStop and Sony Computer Entertainment America have teamed up to donate PlayStation 4 bundles to all 180 Ronald McDonald Houses in the United States.
GameStop's partnership with Ronald McDonald Houses is nothing new. The retailer has been a partner to the charity for more than six years now. In 2013, GameStop reported that its store associates volunteered at 21 different Ronald McDonald Houses across the country.
Ronald McDonald Houses are designed to be a "home-away-from-home" for families who must travel to a faraway hospital or care center as their child gets treatment. McDonald's says sick children are more likely to cope better with the stress of their illness if their family is close by during their hospitalization.
"When families come to a Ronald McDonald House, they are going through an extremely difficult, trying period," Sony director of sales Chip McTighe said in a statement. "Our hope is by teaming up with GameStop we can help add some fun to the homes and bring excitement and laughter to families when they need it most."
People can sign up to stay in a Ronald McDonald House for "little or no cost," and there are local chapters across the country--and throughout the world.
Sony has begun rolling out a new system software update to PlayStation 4, bringing with it various tweaks and improvements to the previous firmware build.
The console update weighs about 245MB, and should now be available to PS4 owners across North America and Europe. Brief patch notes, copied below, suggest that the new update will implement minor fixes.
PS4 Update 2.51 Patch Notes
System software stability during use of some features has been improved.
Operation quality during use of some applications has been improved.
The Xbox One version of Yacht Club Games' 2D side-scrolling platformer Shovel Knight will be released sometime next week, Microsoft has announced. Xbox boss Phil Spencer said on Twitter that he was recently informed that the game had passed certification, while Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb revealed the game's target release window in his own tweet, saying the game is due the week of April 27.
Microsoft typically refreshes the Xbox Store on Wednesdays, which would mean Shovel Knight should arrive on April 29.
At the 2015 Game Developers Conference in March, Microsoft revealed that Battletoads content is coming to Shovel Knight through a future update to the platforming game. You can watch a teaser trailer for the content below.
Greg Mitchell has announced he is leaving his post at Epic Games to join Microsoft's new Vancouver studio, Black Tusk.
With nine years of experience at Epic Games, Mitchell was responsible for the direction of all cinematics in the popular shooter series from Gears of War 2 onwards.
He leaves the North Carolina based developer to join the startup studio Black Tusk, which is building the next game in the Gears of War series, following Microsoft's acquisition of the IP.
Since it was announced back in January 2014 that Microsoft had acquired the IP, little of the Gears of War project has been revealed, aside from one blurry teaser image. It is not known if Black Tusk will make an appearance at Microsoft's E3 press conference to showcase the project. Xbox exec Phil Spencer recently said the main focus for E3 will be the company's own first-party efforts, as well as new IP.
BIG NEWS!! I'm leaving Epic, but heading to @blacktuskstudio to work on #Gearsofwar!! I'll quote Marcus Fenix, by saying "NICE!!" :)
Although Cliff Bleszinski--an instrumental designer on the original trilogy--is not working on the new Gears of War game, Microsoft has hired veteran Gears of War producer Rod Fergusson to lead development.
A set of new images has emerged online showcasing Mad Max, the open-world action game set to release alongside the upcoming Fury Road movie.
The screenshots and concept art, shown further down the page, reveal more about some of the in-game vehicles and crazed foes that players will encounter.
Keeping with the series' signature style, Mad Max is set in a post-apocalyptic world where wasteland scavengers are recurring obstacles. One of the key aspects of the game will be vehicular combat and car customisation.
Early gameplay impressions, noted by GameSpot back in 2013, suggested that it showed promise.
With Alan Wake franchise sales reaching 4.5 million, it seems somewhat strange that developer Remedy has not yet released Alan Wake 2. But it hasn't been for lack of trying. In 2014, the studio said it "worked hard" to make Alan Wake 2 happen, but acknowledged that it could not find the right partners or funding to make it a reality. Creative director Sam Lake added at the time that the developer could have released a "less ambitious" Alan Wake 2, but this would not have done the series justice.
Remedy has time and again stressed that it wants to return to Alan Wake "when the time is right," which would probably be sometime after the developer's current game--Quantum Break--ships in 2016. And now the developer has yet again broached the subject of Alan Wake 2, telling Polygon in a wide-ranging feature that it is already looking beyond Quantum Break to think about what's next--and it could be Alan Wake 2.
"Among other things, we are discussing the possibility of an Alan Wake sequel with multiple partners, but nothing has been decided," Lake said. The original Alan Wake and its follow-up American Nightmare were both published by Microsoft.
Another possibility, Lake said, is a new game in the Quantum Break franchise. The universes for both Alan Wake and Quantum Break were designed from the beginning to allow for multiple follow-ups, he explained
Polygon has also obtained Remedy's pitch video for Alan Wake 2, which Lake describes as "more like a mood piece" that offers up "high-level thematic elements" of what the game would contain. Notably, this video is from 2010 and represents what the game would have been all those years ago.
As detailed in the video, Alan Wake 2 would again star the fictional writer Alan Wake as he battles new enemies in new settings. The game also would offer some kind of game mechanic that would let players "rewrite reality," Lake explained. Check out the video at Polygon.
Head of Xbox Phil Spencer is also featured in Polygon's story, saying that the original Alan Wake was "one of the most engrossing and cinematic games of the Xbox 360 generation." He added that it "would be interesting" to see what Remedy could do with a full-blown sequel. Spencer didn't say if Microsoft was one of the partners that Remedy is currently speaking with about Alan Wake 2, but given the two companies' history, it seems likely that the two have been talking.
Though Alan Wake 2 might not be on the immediate horizon, a recent Microsoft survey suggested that the company was exploring a remastered Xbox One version of the original as a pre-order incentive for Quantum Break. Of course, this doesn't confirm that an Xbox One edition of Alan Wake is in the works, but it does show that Microsoft may be at least considering it.
Modders never cease to amaze. This time, a coder with the alias BMD remade Dota 2 as a third-person shooter.
The popular online multiplayer game typically pits teams of players against one another in a fast-paced, tactical battle. Characters rack up kills of enemy minions and players which earn money to be spent on items and upgrades. Those mechanics are the core of just about every MOBA experience.
BMD has taken a radically different approach however, dropping the items, minions, and tactics of the base game, and instead aiming for a fantasy third-person shooter with cartoony visuals. The result is pretty impressive as you can see in the above video. The mod is quick, and pretty brutal, despite being in its very early stages.
In a Reddit post, BMD explained that he had to change almost everything about the base game to allow things like jumping, strafing, and rapid turning--techniques not normally possible in Dota 2. He also had to "hack-in" camera controls, and rebuild the game's control system from the ground up.
BMD said that he'll be releasing the code for everyone to use soon, but he's trying to work out a few more kinks first. Given that Source 2, the engine used, is completely free and Valve's liberal approach to modding culture, this looks like a variant that might be around for quite some time.
Also of note is the fact that MOBA as a game genre has its roots in mods. The first Dota was itself a mod of Warcraft III. To see a mod of a standard game based on a mod of a full game, while confusing, is really cool.
In a new interview with Engadget, DICE general manager Patrick Bach spoke--albeit briefly--about the destruction system for the developer's upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront shooter. Bach said that, while destruction has been a hallmark of the developer's Battlefield games, Battlefront will be different.
"Star Wars, as an [intellectual property], is shaping what we're doing," he said. "So we won't do excessive destruction just because we can. It's more about 'what do you need and what you want' in a Battlefieldgame versus a Battlefrontgame."
Bach went on to say that massive destruction wouldn't be very faithful to the Star Wars franchise's tastes.
