By Anonymous on Oct 13, 2015 11:37 pm Today's major Destiny update added microtransactions to the game for the very first time. We've now visited the in-game Eververse Trading Company store and can confirm pricing details for the brand Silver currency and the various emotes you can buy. Everyone gets 400 Silver to start, which is enough to buy two standard emotes, as they sell for 200 Silver each. "Legendary" emotes, of which there are two ("the Carlton" from Fresh Prince is one of them), cost 500 Silver each. This emote is known as the "Enthusiastic" dance. Check it out in the gallery above. You can buy additional bundles of Silver at the following price points. - 500 -- $5
- 1,100 --$10
- 2,300 --$20
If you want to buy all 18 of Destiny's new emotes, it would cost you 4,200 Silver, or about $38. Check back soon for a detailed video overview of these emotes and the Eververse Trading Company. Emotes are only cosmetic and do not affect gameplay. Bungie has not yet said if it plans to introduce items other than emotes through the Eververse Trading Company. Whatever the case, one analyst believes Destiny's microtransactions could be big business, capable of generating "hundreds of millions" per year. For more on Destiny's big 2.0.1. update, check out GameSpot's previous coverage. By Anonymous on Oct 13, 2015 11:00 pm Destiny is undergoing big changes today. Bungie has just released the game's new 2.0.1 update, which, among other things, introduces microtransactions and implements big changes to shotgun lethality. Today's update adds the Eververse Trading Company, the in-game store when you can now buy dancing emotes. You can even pay money for "The Carlton," as made famous from Fresh Prince. As for the shotgun changes, the update removes the Shot Package perk from all shotguns, making shotguns less lethal. As announced previously, the CBS program welcomes Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda Symphony of the Goddesses touring concert for a performance on the show tonight, which airs at 11:35 PM EDT. The symphony will perform a preview of a new, never-before-heard arrangement for Nintendo 3DS game The Legend of Zelda: TriForce Heroes during the show. "Highlights" from the game will be shown during the program during the musical performance. Tonight's episode will also feature actor Elijah Wood as one of the guests. He is perhaps best known for his role as Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but he is also a video game voice actor. Most recently, he voiced one of the leading characters in Double Fine's adventure game, Broken Age. Zelda's appearance tonight marks the third time video games have been represented on the program, following PewDiePie and No Man's Sky developer Sean Murray's appearances earlier in October. TriForce Heroes launches on October 23, while the Symphony of the Goddesses tour is currently running across the US and Europe. The 2016 leg of the tour, Master Quest, was just announced today. Check out the symphony's complete touring schedule here. Disclosure: CBS is GameSpot's parent company. By Anonymous on Oct 13, 2015 10:08 pm Jason Voorhees recently appeared in Mortal Kombat X as a DLC fighter, but now he's getting his own new game. Gun Media and developer Illfonic have announced Friday the 13th: The Game, a third-person, asymmetrical multiplayer game for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The hook is that one player controls Jason Voorhees, while seven others take control of camp counselors who are attempting to survive the night. The game takes place in a "semi-open world" of Camp Crystal Lake from the film series. "It's a classic horror fan's dream, no shaky cam, no found footage," developers said. "We want you to know we're revitalizing the golden era of slashers, and putting you at the controls of each horrific, blood-splattered moment." Gun Media is looking to fund Friday the 13th: The Game on Kickstarter. A campaign for the game went live today, asking for $700,000. Friday the 13th: The Game is actually an evolution of Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp. It was decided to make this a Friday the 13th game after franchise creator Sean Cunningham reached out to the development team. "That's when things got awesome," the developers said. "Sean came to us in early 2015, but we quickly discovered these weren't the normal business conversations you would have when you try to secure a license as important as Friday the 13th. It was totally different. It was a conversation built on mutual admiration and respect for what each had created. "Sean immediately noticed the passion we had for Friday the 13th, and after several incredible meetings over the next few months, we decided to upgrade our plans for Summer Camp and embrace the Friday the 13th video game license," they added. "After several incredible meetings over the next few months, Sean surprised us by offering the Friday the 13th video game license. It was literally a dream come true for a group of lifelong fans. He knew he could trust us with the most coveted horror IP ever, and we plan to make good on that promise to both him and you, the millions of loyal Friday the 13th fans around the world." As for why Gun Media is not seeking a traditional publisher relationship, the developer said violence, gore, and nudity "aren't just concepts to consider--they're necessities." Partnering with a publisher meant that might have meant these elements would have to be toned down. "We don't want that. You don't want that," they said. "We're not interested in compromising what made the film franchise so popular. We're interested in building precisely what we, as fans, want. The ultimate Friday the 13th experience. Blood, guts, gore, brutal kills, and more. You want an experience true to the films, and so do we. It's about creative control and delivering the best game we can. We want to share that control, with you, not a publisher." Friday the 13th: The Game runs on Epic's Unreal Engine 4, and looks quite nice, even in its unfinished state currently. Check out some images in the gallery below. The game was conceived as a multiplayer-only game, but Gun Media said it will consider a single-player campaign if the Kickstarter does well enough. There are a variety of stretch goals featured on the game's Kickstarter page, but they are blurred out for now. These will be announced later. Friday the 13th: The Game is tentatively scheduled to launch in October 2016. You can guarantee yourself a copy of the game by pledging at least $25. For lots more, be sure to check out the game's Kickstarter. By Anonymous on Oct 13, 2015 09:38 pm There have been two trailers so far for the upcoming revival of iconic '90s sci-fi show The X-Files, and now a new promo has been released. This one is somewhat different however. It's a stylised animated video featuring voiceovers, but no actual footage from the new series. Check it out here: The key voice in this clip is that of the Smoking Man, the enigmatic villain played by William B. Davis. Main stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny can also be heard, as FBI agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder. The first episode of the six-episode season recently premiered at New York Comic Con, to mixed reviews. The new season will premiere on FOX on January 24, 2016. The X-Files ran for nine years, and clocked up 202 episodes between 1993 and 2002. By the time the final episode aired, it had become the longest-running consecutive sci-fi series ever on US broadcast TV. There were also two spinoff movies: 1998's The X-Files: Fight the Future, and The X-Files: I Want to Believe in 2008. By Anonymous on Oct 13, 2015 09:13 pm Over nine million people played the beta for DICE's Star Wars Battlefront, making it the "single largest beta in the history of EA," according to senior producer Sigurlina Ingvarsdottir. Posting on the game's official website, Ingvarsdottir said the studio "could not be happier" with the amount of interest being shown for its upcoming shooter. "Ever since we revealed Star Wars Battlefront back in April, we knew the beta would be a huge test for our game. After all, the beta has been one of the most talked about topics around the game over the last six months, and it was exciting (and a little nerve racking if I'm being completely honest) to open it up to the world. "Like Han Solo at the end of A New Hope, we're glad you showed up," she continued. "Even more importantly than just showing up, you've been spending a lot of time playing, having a great time' and leaving us some invaluable feedback, as we continue to tune and balance the game until launch." In May 2015, EA exec Blake Jorgensen said the company expects to sell between nine and ten million copies of Star Wars Battlefront during the publisher's fiscal year 2016 (ending March 31, 2016). The Star Wars Battlefront release date has been confirmed as November 17. This is about a month before Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens hits theaters in December. EA has announced plans to release tie-in DLC for Battlefront based on Disney's movie. By Anonymous on Oct 13, 2015 09:02 pm Deus Ex: Revision, the fan-made mod that updates the 2000 PC game's graphics and more, is launching today, October 13, as a free download on Steam. Created by mod team Caustic Creative and authorized by Square Enix, the mod aims to offer more than a simple graphics makeover. Watch its launch trailer below. "Where other projects fill in detail around the edges of the game by tuning gameplay mechanics or improving textures, we focus on the visceral core of the Deus Ex experience, bringing new level design, aesthetic direction, and world-building detail," Caustic Creative lead John French said in a statement. For its part, Eidos Montreal boss David Anfossi praised Caustic's mod, calling it a "fantastic way" for both veteran fans of the franchise and newcomers alike to see what the series is all about. Deus Ex: Revision will be available sometime later today on Steam at this page. In addition, Deus Ex: Game of the Year edition and Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut are on sale this week for 80 percent off as part of Steam's "Stealth Sale," which runs through October 16. This sale doesn't appear to have gone live yet, as it's not published on Steam's website as of this writing. The next core Deus Ex game is Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, which launches in February 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Recently, Square Enix ditched the game's controversial preorder program. 2015 marks the 15th anniversary of the Deus Ex franchise. By Anonymous on Oct 13, 2015 08:13 pm In addition to announcing the launch day Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer playlists today, developer 343 Industries revealed that it is opening up the game's application program interface (API) for everyone. What this means is that anyone can take player statistics from the game to build new websites or apps. 343 says giving players access to game data was a "top priority" during the course of Halo 5's development. Halo 5's API will give developers access to the following: - Service Record (Life-to-date stats for each player)
- Match History (Access to each match played)
- Carnage Report (Complete statistical breakdown for each player in a match)
"Giving the community the ability to compile stats will allow developers to craft their own statistical story and experiences," 343 said. This doesn't replace the API's existing functionality on Halo Waypoint and the Halo Channel, however. Right now, the Halo 5 API is in private beta. 343 is working with professional and community organizations, including gaming leagues such as the ESL and MLG, as well as community sites like Halo Charts and Halo Tracker. The Halo 5 API will be available to everyone else "around the same time" that the game launches. "We know you'll surprise and delight us with inventive and unexpected uses, and we can't wait to see what you develop and share with the Halo community later this year and beyond," 343 said. The Halo 5 release date is set for October 27 exclusively for Xbox One. By Anonymous on Oct 13, 2015 07:57 pm Telltale Games, the go-to studio for episodic games based on big third-party properties, has kicked off its Minecraft: Story Mode series with the first episode, titled The Order of the Stone. How does it fare in bringing canonical story to a game that has, until now, thrived off giving players the freedom to craft their own? We've adventured across the Internet to bring you word of the critical reception. Below, you'll find score as well a a sample of the review text from a variety of publications. Take a look and, by the time you're done, you'll have a good idea of how it's being received. - Game: Minecraft: Story Mode - The Order of the Stone
- Developer: Telltale Games
- Platforms: PlayStation 4, PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One
- Release Date: October 13
- Price: $4.99/£4.99
GameSpot -- 7/10"It's [the] flavor that helps propel this first episode of Minecraft: Story Mode along, even when the story itself only begins to hint at the scope of the adventure ahead. It's a pleasant start, packed with individual events but featuring little in the way of narrative propulsion. When I reached the end of this episode, I wanted more. I'm hoping that, like most outstanding Minecraft creations, Minecraft: Story Mode just needs a little more time to build." -- Randolph Ramsay [Full review] Forbes -- 8/10"Overall Minecraft Story Mode is a great start to a new series. Although the child-like visuals will put some Telltale fans off this is to miss the huge investment and achievement so far. If the series continues in this vein it's set to be warmly welcomed by both Minecraft fans and families." -- Gil Press [Full review] IGN -- 7.3/10"Minecraft: Story Mode is a pleasant, family-friendly adventure that very quickly won me over and kept me invested in its twists and turns. The drama might not be as heightened as something like The Walking Dead, but I still found myself surprisingly invested in the choices I had to make about my companions, undeveloped as they may be, and smiling at the Minecrafty in-jokes. Sparse interactivity and a lack of commitment to explaining this world and its inhabitants hold Episode 1 back, but I'm still absorbed in my story, and eager to find out what happens next." -- Justin Davis [Full review] Destructoid -- 5/10"There is some hope for this series to be great in the future, but The Order of the Stone is just okay. The Minecraft-specific gameplay is a nice way to shake up the usual formula. The blank slate of the universe allows the tale to go wherever it wants. The voice cast is full of actors who can do great work. But the writing needs to be more engaging if Story Mode wants to be taken seriously among Telltale canon." -- Darren Nakamura [Full review] VideoGamer -- 8/10"Perhaps the reason why the marriage of Minecraft and story works so well is that Telltale has kept things simple. It's the most basic of hero's journey plots. A band of young adventurers tasked with saving the world by an old mentor, the sort of story that's been told so many times in so many ways that you could conceivably fit it anywhere. But there's plenty of spectacle here, and such clever use of the license that I can't help but think of all the post-Walking Dead series to come out of the studio, this may well turn out to be the best." -- Jamie Trinca [Full review] Digital Spy -- 4/5"Minecraft: Story Mode is off to a good start, and despite a story-less canvas and only in-game references to draw from, developer Telltale has crafted something promising." -- Matthew Reynolds [Full review] GameInformer -- 8.25/10"Minecraft fans should enjoy the references to the game, while Telltale fans will enjoy the traditional storytelling elements they've come to expect from the studio. The Order of the Stone grabs your attention at a number of points and sets you down the path of actually caring about what's going on in a story set in the player-driven Minecraft universe." -- Brian Shea [Full review] By Anonymous on Oct 13, 2015 07:45 pm With just two weeks to go before the release of Halo 5: Guardians, developer 343 Industries has now announced the sci-fi shooter's lineup of launch day multiplayer playlists. Per IGN, the eight launch-day Halo 5 multiplayer playlists include: - Warzone -- Halo 5's new, MOBA-like 24-player mode. Matches can last 30 minutes or more, so this mode will enable join-in-progress.
- Warzone Assault -- An asymmetrical variant, this mode challenges teams to destroy the power core or defend it.
- Team Arena -- "Play on the very best modes and maps Halo 5 has to offer."
- Slayer -- The classic Halo mode.
- Breakout -- An all-new, single-life team mode.
- Free-for-All -- You know the drill.
- SWAT -- No shields or motion tracker; one-shot kill headshots.
- Weekend Social -- Maps/modes voted on by the community and change every weekend.
Halo 5's trademark Big Team Battle mode will return in Halo 5, but it won't be available at launch. When it is eventually released, the mode will get its own dedicated matchmaking playlist. In addition, multiplayer designer Quinn DelHoyo said 343 is making new maps designed "from the ground up" for Big Team Battle. Halo 5 will launch with 20+ maps, with 15+ more maps coming to the game as free DLC before June 2016. The Halo 5 release date is set for October 27 exclusively for Xbox One. In other recent news, 343 has defended the game's use of microtransactions and released its launch trailer which pits Master Chief against Spartan Locke. On top of that, the developer revealed that work has begun on Halo 6. By Anonymous on Oct 13, 2015 07:30 pm Here's 5 new skills you didn't see in the last Tomb Raider game. By Anonymous on Oct 13, 2015 07:17 pm Everyone who played the Call of Duty: Black Ops III multiplayer beta on PlayStation 4 can now download their promised free dynamic theme. Activision is giving the theme away as a "thank you" to fans. The theme is accessible through the Black Ops III "Themes" tab. There you'll find the "Morg City Zombies Theme" to download. It's based on the noir-inspired, 1940s setting of Black Ops III's zombies mode, Shadows of Evil, which stars Jeff Goldblum, Ron Perlman, Heather Graham, and Neal McDonough. You can get a closer look at the Black Ops III zombies theme through the overview video above. The Black Ops III multiplayer beta was held in August, starting first on PS4 before coming later to Xbox One and PC. In other recent news about Black Ops III's zombies mode, Activision has released a new Shadows of Evil trailer which sets up the story and provides a look at how Goldblum, Perlman, Graham, and McDonough look in the game. Black Ops III launches on November 6 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC. By Anonymous on Oct 13, 2015 07:00 pm Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens is now only two months away from release, and final details about what to expect are beginning to appear. One piece of news that has emerged is the film's running time. Following the Nerd has reported that The Force Awakens will run 136 minutes, and in the UK carry a 12A certificate. While this has not been confirmed by Disney or Lucasfilm, the site did state that they were "100% certain" that the information was correct. This running time will put the picture in line with previous movies in the franchise. While Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back both clocked in at just over two hours, Return of the Jedi and all three prequels topped the 130-minute mark. 134 minutes will place The Force Awakens at a minute longer than The Phantom Menace, but shorter than either Attack of the Clones or Revenge of the Sith. The UK certificate is the same as the one given to all of Marvel's recent superhero films, and is the equivalent to a PG-13. While the US certificate is yet to be announced, it is expected to be in line with this. Earlier this week, director JJ Abrams confirmed during a panel discussion for Vanity Fair that while he did have final cut on the film, it was still very much Disney's property. "When you do a Disney project, there's a clause in there that you kind of go, 'Well, if I were a lawyer I could probably drive a truck through it'," he said, via Indiewire. The implication here was that Disney still had to right to take the movie from the director if they weren't happy with results. Nevertheless, in the interview Abrams was full of praise for the studio. "They're not trying to 'Disney-fy' it," he said. "They're not doing anything other than, I think, an incredibly smart thing, which is letting Kathleen Kennedy--who is a remarkable person and producer--run and lead Lucasfilm to a place where I think it wants to go. They let us make the movie we wanted to make."
