Avengers 4 Directors Wrap Production, Enjoy Giant Thanos Cake

By Dan Auty on Jan 12, 2018 11:54 pm

The third Avengers movie may not have been released yet, but the fourth one has already wrapped production. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo moved straight from shooting this year's Avengers: Infinity War to the currently untitled Avengers 4, which is set to hit theaters in summer 2019.

The Russo brothers marked the end of production by tweeting an image of a spectacular "wrap cake." It shows the villainous Thanos astride a galactic slab of iced cake, itself held aloft by a gloved hand. Check it out below:

Given that Infinity War isn't out until May, it is not surprising that very few details about Avengers 4 have been released. However, we do know that it will complete a 22-film run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that kicked off with Iron Man in 2008. Last year, Marvel boss Kevin Feige said, "As we get to Avengers: Infinity War, there will be a sense of a climax. By the time we're at Avengers 4, 22 movies will have encompassed the first three phases of the MCU. And what happens after that will be very different. I don't know if it's Phase 4, it might be a new thing."

In a separate interview, Feige explained that the follow-up to Spider-Man: Homecoming, which hits theaters shortly after Avengers 4, will start the next era of Marvel movies. "So much happens in [the third and fourth Avengers movies], as you can imagine, and so much is affected by it, that we felt what better person to hold your hand and lead you into the next incarnation of the MCU, in a grounded, realistic manner, than Peter Parker?" he said. "So, coming out two months after Untitled Avengers, [that's what] much of what the next Spider-Man film will be about."

The first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War arrived in November. The upcoming superhero epic brings together pretty much every hero from the last decade of Marvel movies in their fight against Thanos. It hits theaters on May 4, 2018.

Destiny 2 Xur Location Guide: Where Is Xur And What Exotics Is He Selling? (Jan. 12-16)

By Chris Pereira on Jan 12, 2018 11:28 pm

The weekend has arrived, and that means Xur has made his latest appearance in Destiny 2. As always, he has a selection of Exotic gear for sale along with some other recent additions to his inventory. This particular lineup of items is a tad unusual, however, as all four pieces of gear he has for sale are from the Curse of Osiris DLC, which is a situation we have not seen before (and means you'll need the DLC to buy much). Here's where to find Xur and what he's selling from now until the weekly reset on Tuesday, January 16.

With this week's Flashpoint being in the EDZ, that's also where you'll find Xur. Specifically, he's located in the Winding Cove. To find him, fast travel to that area's Landing Zone, and head straight up the road in front of you. Xur is camped out next to a crashed ship up on the hillside, which you can reach by scaling the rocks just to his right.

As for what he's selling, his newer items are again available. You can pick up a Three of Coins to boost your chances of securing an Exotic, or the expensive Fated Engram, which is guaranteed to decrypt into an Exotic you don't already own. Otherwise, your options are four pieces of Curse of Osiris gear, including the Exotic grenade launcher The Colony. Here's everything Xur has this week:

  • The Colony (Exotic grenade launcher) -- 29 Legendary Shards
  • Shinobu's Vow (Exotic Hunter gauntlets) -- 23 Legendary Shards
  • Mk. 44 Stand Asides (Exotic Titan leg armor) -- 23 Legendary Shards
  • The Stag (Exotic Warlock helmet) -- 23 Legendary Shards
  • Fated Engram -- 97 Legendary Shards
  • Three of Coins -- 31 Legendary Shards

Before picking up the Three of Coins, you'll want to be aware that there have been complaints about how it works. Players have expressed frustration with the boost to Exotic drops that it provides, as well as lack of clear communication about what it's supposed to do. Bungie addressed how the Three of Coins works last month and admitted there is a problem with their use in Heroic Strikes. A fix for that is on the way.

More recently, Bungie outlined a huge number of changes coming to Destiny 2. In addition to clarifying what content will be free versus paid, it also announced the return of Faction Rally, Eververse changes, quality-of-life improvements, and a long-term roadmap that includes the release of Masterwork armor.

PS4 Dissidia Final Fantasy NT Beta Begins Today, Doesn't Require PS Plus

By Kevin Knezevic on Jan 12, 2018 10:52 pm

This month is a particularly busy one for beta tests. In addition to the Dragon Ball FighterZ open beta this weekend, Square Enix has now kicked off one for its own upcoming fighting game, the PS4-exclusive Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.

The beta begins today, January 12, and runs until January 21, giving players over a week to try out the arcade fighter. Unlike the previous Dissidia Final Fantasy NT beta that took place back in August, this beta is open to all PS4 players, regardless of whether or not you're a PS Plus subscriber. However, you'll need to have a Plus subscription in order to play the full game online after it launches.

The beta is available to download now on the PlayStation Store and weighs in at a rather hefty 18 GB. Square Enix hasn't specified which of the game's characters will be playable during the beta, but the publisher has said that the beta roster "will vary at regular intervals."

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is a three-on-three fighting game starring heroes and villains from throughout the Final Fantasy series' history. It will feature 28 characters at launch, with an additional six set to arrive post-release as DLC. Square Enix hasn't revealed who these six fighters will be, but they're included in the game's season pass, which players will receive with the Dissidia Final Fantasy NT Digital Deluxe or Ultimate Collector's Editions.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT launches for PS4 on January 30. Ahead of its release, players can already snag a piece of DLC for the game. Those who purchase a specially marked package of Nissin Cup Noodles can receive a code for the Royal Raiment DLC outfit for Final Fantasy XV protagonist Noctis. That offer is currently only available for US residents. You can read more about it on Nissin's website.

Fortnite: Battle Royale Revamps Its Map With New Areas And Improvements Next Week

By Chris Pereira on Jan 12, 2018 10:45 pm

A new update to Fortnite is on the way, and this one primarily deals with the game's sole Battle Royale map. Developer Epic Games has previewed some changes launching for Battle Royale next week, and it looks to be a good one for those interested in having new places to explore.

As outlined in the video below by lead systems designer Eric Williamson, the map update introduces a "bunch of new points of interest." The primary highlight is the added city section, but there are also a number of new named areas located around the western part of the map. As Williamson explained, "We felt that [the west] was a little light on points of interest, so we wanted to even out the map and make it feel like there were more locations to drop into."

Williamson said that the different "biomes" have been divided up more clearly, so as to help distinguish them from each other. "The swamp feels swampier, the mountains feel more mountain-y. Really, the different areas of the map feel more unique," he explained. This is in addition to unspecified quality-of-life improvements that are described as a "work-in-progress."

Christmas trees and their associated chests are on their way out with the holiday event coming to an end. The chests are removed in part because, with the newly expanded map, there are a lot of new places to find loot. As a result, Epic wants loot to be "distributed evenly so that there isn't too much additional rare loot in [a] match."

An exact release date for these changes was not announced, but the update is set to arrive sometime next week on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Amazon's New Sci-Fi Show Electric Dreams Tackles What It Means To Be Human

By Mat Elfring on Jan 12, 2018 10:30 pm

Quality science fiction television has seen a resurgence since Ron Moore rebooted Battlestar Galactica in 2004. And now, Moore is working with Amazon to adapt a legendary sci-fi writer's work for a new series called Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams. Much like Netflix's Black Mirror and the upcoming CBS All Access reboot of The Twilight Zone, Electric Dreams is an anthology series, where each episode is a standalone, self-contained story. Unlike Black Mirror, Electric Dreams isn't the bleakest thing on TV.

Each episode of Electric Dreams is based on the work of Dick, the acclaimed science fiction writer whose other adapted works include Blade Runner, Minority Report, Total Recall, and The Man in the High Castle. Thematically, Electric Dreams fits well within that body."I think the two underlying themes that are present in most of [Dick's] work, almost every piece of his work, interestingly enough, is the question of what does it mean to be human and what is the nature of reality," Moore told GameSpot. "There's always a lot about the nature of love and trust and freedom versus security and those types of things."

Within the realm of most contemporary science fiction, there is an overall fear of the future or fear of technology always present. Essentially, it's desolate and cold, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Moore went on to explain that both Twilight Zone and Black Mirror have defining characteristics, like with Twilight Zone's twists and Black Mirror being centered around technology. Electric Dreams centers around the human experience and the philosophies surrounding it.

"There's a lot of hope, and a lot of truth," Isa Dick Hackett, daughter of Philip Dick and executive producer, told GameSpot during New York Comic Con last year. "I got these scripts and then just start crying, because they're beautiful. Because they really were about human relationships and pain."

Executive producer Michael Dinner put it very simply when he told us, "The future doesn't have to be terrible."

Because of the format, to truly understand just what Electric Dreams is, you have to limit the focus to the individual episodes, all of which keep the filmmaker's vision in mind just as much as the source material. Take for example the fifth episode of the series, "Real Life," written by Ron Moore and directed by Jeffrey Reiner (The Affair). Originally based on the 1954 short story "Exhibit Piece," "Real Life" is a departure from the source material, but it does keep the centralized theme intact.

"[Moore] started with a story about a super-nervous museum curator who was caught between centuries," executive producer David Kanter told GameSpot. "He didn't know if he was a guy from the 1950s who had come back in time to curate an exhibit about the 1950s 100-200 years in the future or whether he was in the '50s and having delusions. Ron ended up writing a story about two people connected through artificial intelligence. That was exactly what we were hoping for--that type of transformation from the original stories to something new that still had the essence."

The location and time may have changed, but the idea of questioning what is real life remains the focal point for this story.

Back in May, we were invited onto the set of Electric Dreams for the filming of that episode, which stars Anna Paquin and Terrence Howard. The episode filmed in downtown Chicago, inside a diner that feels outside of time. During conversations with the cast, the word "grounded" came up over and over again.

"The grounded thing I think is key for this because we have two realities bouncing off each other and each one is competing and claiming that it's the real reality," explained Sam Witwer, who plays Chris in the episode. "So the whole key is to keep it as grounded as possible, which is tough, considering there's martial arts fights and people getting shot. You're trying to sell that somehow as reality. I think the key is just not to take anything for granted in the performance and show a little realistic fear for what's actually happening."

While the focus of the episode is primarily on questioning your surroundings, the technology in this episode is something very familiar: virtual reality. However, it's VR that's evolved to a point where it's tough to decipher what's real and what's manufactured.

"At what point does our mind play tricks on us and confuse us?" asked Jacob Vargas, who plays a character named Mario in the episode. "And do we start to lose sight of what's real and what's not?"

In an era of anthological storytelling, Electric Dreams should easily be able to find its audience, especially considering the talent behind it and the source material. While many may not be familiar with the original work the show is adapting--as most come from lesser-known short stories--the themes of what it means to be human and the day-to-day struggles we all deal with should resonate with its audience. There's always room for more science-fiction on television, especially when it comes from Ron Moore, so Electric Dreams is a welcomed addition.

Electric Dreams comes to Amazon Prime video on January 12.

Hyperkin Is Bringing Back The Game Boy With The Ultra GB

By Michael Higham on Jan 12, 2018 10:09 pm

Hyperkin is known for its lineup of retro consoles and introducing new ways to play old games. At CES 2018, the company revealed a prototype of the Ultra GB, which plays Nintendo Game Boy games using the original cartridges.

The Ultra GB shares a similar design to the Game Boy Pocket, but it's built with an aluminum body and a front-lit screen. Button layout and ergonomics remain the same as the old handheld, though. You'll find the volume control and power switch in same place as the original Game Boy. While the concept design has a blue tint to the screen, Hyperkin is adding an RGB wheel to change the screen's color tint in the final model.

The prototype Ultra GB has a DC power connector, but the final version will charge through a USB-C port. There's also a link cable port to maintain the multiplayer capabilities of some Game Boy games. Stereo audio is another big feature on the Ultra GB, which was implemented with Chiptune musicians in mind.

Hyperkin hasn't given a release date for the Ultra GB just yet but stated that it's aiming to launch by the end of the year. A price hasn't been set either, but the company said it's likely to be under $100 USD. A near-final build will be shown off in June at E3 this year.

With the wild popularity of gaming's past, seen with the NES Classic and SNES Classic, it seems a return of the old handhelds is in order. We've covered some of Hyperkin's products in the past like the SaveWizard for PS4, the retro-style X91 Xbox One controller, and Retron HD that plays NES games.

Overwatch League Takes One Thing From Pro Sports That Could Make A Huge Difference

By Array on Jan 12, 2018 09:19 pm

The Overwatch League represents one of the most significant ventures into esports to date, and certainly the largest from Blizzard. Significant resources are being put into the league, with Twitch reportedly paying a major sum to secure broadcasting rights. Blizzard has also built a major arena in Los Angeles and released a huge batch of new Overwatch skins to help drive interest in the event.

Clearly, the company's investment in esports is serious, though it remains to be seen what kind of success it will enjoy (or not). Blizzard has been careful to temper expectations for this first season, but it believes it's made decisions--some of which were inspired by mainstream professional sports--that set it up for success. That includes its region-based approach, where teams hail from particular cities or areas, much like an NBA or NFL team, thus helping prospective fans to choose and really get behind a group.

In the lead up to the Overwatch League's launch, we discussed Blizzard's approach to esports, whether the league's existence impacts how the studio handles balance updates, and more with game director Jeff Kaplan. You can check out our full interview with him below. We've also got a primer on Overwatch League, a rundown on all the teams and rosters, and a guide on how to watch Overwatch League. And, of course, following the most recent Overwatch update, we've also got a look at all the new team skins.

GameSpot: What does Overwatch League mean to somebody who's been working on the game for several years now? What does Overwatch League mean for Overwatch?

Jeff Kaplan: Well, I think we get excited about not only what does Overwatch League mean for Overwatch the game, which is obviously, in some ways, exciting and daunting and flattering to us that such an amazing league would get built around the game that we worked so hard to make. But I get really excited for what Overwatch League means to esports. I've always been a huge pro sports fan, and I've always loved esports. The two have always felt so separate to me. There are awesome things that pro sports does and is doing that we've always wished we seen more of in esports. There's awesome things about esports that pro sports doesn't understand. I'm really hoping that this becomes the marriage and the inspiration for esports in general that we could sort of level up to that next level, and just really solidify and professionalize esports.

What is it about the city-based structure that you're taking from pro sports that'll help Overwatch League? Do you think it'll lend more personality to it and loyalty maybe among fans, or what are some of the pro sports aspects that you really want to see shine through in Overwatch League?

I think the regional-based teams is one of the main things for pro sports that we've taken a huge inspiration from. I think we can all remember when or have that friend, if it's not us personally, where they weren't into a particular sport, but, for whatever reason, their home team makes it to the finals and now they're going to get into it. It becomes this life-long love that you suddenly have. That really has been hard in esports. One thing that will happen with esports, for example, is you'll approach a game that you're really into for the first time, and you might become aware of the esports scene. It's so hard to have an immediate grasp on who you should be a associating with in any way. There's all these organizations where, if you're an esports fan and have been following them for a long time, they really mean something to you and you know what these names are and what they stand for. But if you haven't been following esports, it's a little bit foreign in that regard. So we think bringing a regional-based approach will help some fans immediately associate.

The other thing that I hope it does is start to bring esport awareness to more parts of the world. I think we all know that there are certain parts of the world, such as Korea and California, that everybody knows what esports is. Everybody's really into it and following it. But there's so many parts of the world where esports really hasn't penetrated fully yet. It would be great to start to see regional-based teams get more and more exposure to some of those parts of the world.

The thing about esports is that, I guess, compared to like traditional sports, it's sort of like the rebellious, younger brother. It's still evolving. Overwatch is a very accessible game compared to League of Legends or StarCraft that allows more people of varying experiences and skill levels to try to get into the sport. Is that accessibility something that you're always thinking about?

With everything that we've done with Overwatch, from the game itself to the league, there's always been a desire to be as inclusive with as many people as possible. We try to make things approachable both in the game and in the league structure so that somebody who's not necessarily familiar with Overwatch or Overwatch League immediately feels welcome. That's always the goal. It's kind of a Blizzard goal with all of the things that we do, to speak to as many people as possible. A lot of times it gets taken the wrong way. A lot of people say, "Oh, you're trying to dumb things down," or, "You just want to make for the casual audience." That couldn't be further from the truth. I mean, there's nothing more hardcore than trying to stand up in esports, a franchise esports league like we've done. It's extremely targeted at the hardcore audience experience..

The Blizzard approach is not to make everything casual. The Blizzard approach is to find what we think is amazing as hardcore fans ourselves or hardcore players in games and then [discover] how do you bring that to as many people as possible and not be off-putting like some hardcore content and features sometimes [are].

No Caption Provided

Blizzard has had a hand in esports for a very long time, like with StarCraft, which arguably sort of molded modern esports as we know it. Through Overwatch League, this is a more conscious and involved effort on Blizzard's part. Was it tricky to figure out how exactly you were going to inject more traditional sports, like setups and systems, within the esports model?

Well, the awesome part about working on Overwatch League is that we can take that love for pro sports and start to bring it to esports. The hard part wasn't the ideas themselves. You know, coming up with regional-based teams or that we wanted to start to embrace having home and away uniforms in the game or that we wanted to feed statistics to our broadcasters in a way like pro sports was doing. The ideas wasn't the hard part. The hard part was actually the execution on those. That's the thing that we're going to continue to iterate on. We're very pleased with the progress that Overwatch has made from the Overwatch World Cup at BlizzCon to the Overwatch League pre-season games that happened in December to what we hope is going to be a great kick-off for this opening week. We know we can do way more than we've already done, but to us it's very much about iteration and then constantly sort of raising the bar on ourselves. We're going to watch every single match and decide how can we be better every single time.

Now that Overwatch has this chance, because you are taking things from the more mainstream professional athletic sports, is there a sense that you are trying to prove something to people who might not normally be into esports or even people who are but maybe might not think the structure is going to work?

I think there's a lot of pressure on us with Overwatch League to get it right. There's a lot of eyes, and we're very excited. We don't want to let people down. I think of it less in terms of we have something to prove and more of what I hope our legacy is, both as Overwatch the game and Overwatch League. Obviously the dream is for Overwatch League to become far reaching, to have people fall in love with not only Overwatch and esports but our teams and our players, and to really get to know them just like any professional sport. That would be the ultimate goal.

I feel like even if we come up short of that goal, as long as Overwatch League inspires the world that esports is bigger and more important than they realize... I feel like the younger generation already gets it and knows that this exists. And that we validate that esports is real and important and growing. And that future esports endeavors strive to do something a little bit higher, a little bit better, a little bit more professional. I feel like that would be a victory.

When a game enters the esports scene, I always am curious how that affects your view with all these Mercy nerfs and whatnot. With something like that, is there extra weight to those balance updates? You're very open with your audience about the updates and I always look forward to [YouTube user] dinoflask's take.

Me too.

But does the league add more considerations, like how something affects the Overwatch League meta as opposed to the casual meta and so forth?

Well, we're always balancing with our pro players in mind. So the fact that Overwatch League exists hasn't changed that. We were lucky enough to enjoy a really thriving pro scene in the beta that just sort of developed organically on its own. Those players have always communicated very clearly with us, and they have a lot of avenues to get through to us. So pro players have been influencing the design of Overwatch since its inception, since the earliest days that anybody besides the development team could play it. So not a lot has changed in that regard.

I think, obviously, any time you have a lot of eyes on something, which I hope will be the case with Overwatch League, it makes you want to get it right. But I feel like we wanted to get it right [prior] to Overwatch League existing. The fact that the league exists doesn't change the responsibility that we have as developers to make sure that the game is balanced, that it's super fun to play, and that it's also super fun to watch.

Is there one thing in particular that you're just hoping will happen? Whether seeing fans and people respond to it more like excitedly or anything? Is there something like that?

I think there are two things that I'm most excited for with Overwatch League and that I hope to see. The first is we have this whole cadre of amazing pro players that I feel like have really been legitimized in their career, legitimized in their talent and their skill, and they're going to get the recognition that they deserve. I feel like under the Overwatch League structure, they're very protected as professionals, and that's very exciting to me. These players are at an awesome point in their lives, and I think this is an amazing opportunity for them. To me, more than anything, this league centers around them and this opportunity. So that's going to be exciting. I hope they get the spotlight that they deserve because they've earned it. It's going to be really exciting to see it play out.

The other thing that I'm super excited about with Overwatch League is the first-time esport fan that's never even paid attention to esports before. I know we're going to attract some of them. I think for all of us as a kid... for me, I can remember the first time my dad brought me to Dodger stadium. I have almost an emotional reaction to those memories. I can't wait for the next generation to grow up with memories like that of their Overwatch League experiences. Also, for people to realize... it's a hard pill for some people to realize who've never sat down and watched esports that watching a video game be played at the highest professional level is actually amazingly exciting. I think [with] a lot of people, it's easy for them to dismiss that or roll their eyes [at] that. Then they go to their first DreamHack or BlizzCon or [Dota 2] International or hopefully Overwatch League match, and they realize the energy and the excitement and the skill level of what's being performed before them is actually amazing and a great experience. I'm really excited for those first time esport fans.

You also have to wonder if there are people out there who are extremely talented Overwatch players, where maybe it's like a very serious hobby for them, but now this structured league could bring out the next generation of players.

We're excited for that as well. One of the things that I really love his approach on is Nate Nanzer, who's the commissioner of the Overwatch League. Since the inception of the League, [it] felt like it wasn't just about coming up with an amazing professional league. It was about coming up with an entire ecosystem that made it very clear for players the steps that they needed to take to achieve that someday. I think we all, you know, when we watch our first professional baseball game or basketball game, it can seem really daunting, but there feels like a path to get there. You know you can ask somebody like, "What do I need to do to be that someday?" We wanted the same thing for Overwatch League. We wanted it to not only be the celebration of the top play in the world, but also to be a very aspirational thing that, you know, our really talented players who might not realize it might have a future in pro esports.

It seems like it's fostering a sense of community, right? It's always been connected. Esports are always very like digitally connected. Then of course there are the actual tournaments and the actual match where people go and there's a ton of people. When Major League Baseball players have to go down to AAA for a while, it's always fun to go see them play for a $5 ticket. I wonder if eventually Overwatch League will become so widespread that there will be that really concrete sense of community around it. You touched on it, but that just seems so appealing to me to be like, "Oh, there's a Dynasty game this weekend. Let's have friends over and watch it. Like get pizza." Or go to a bar and watch it.

You're speaking specifically to one of the design goals of the league itself in the regional-based sense, which is, you know, there are a lot of Overwatch players who know exactly who they're going to root for: I'm a Genji main, and I love Seagull. I watch his stream every day. So therefore, I'm going to be a Dallas Fuel fan. That's a very informed decision that you're making at that point. Whereas, some people just want to enjoy the sort of experience at first, and they're not yet initiated into what that means. So they need those things to latch onto. So I think and I hope that the regional-based approach will be one of those things that allows people to say, "I'm not sure who my Overwatch team should be, but I'm from San Francisco so I'm going to root for the Shock just because I'm from that area," for example.

We also thought a lot about that when we helped the teams develop their names and their logos as well. That some people won't be from any of the areas that these teams are in, but they'll just look at, "Wow, look at those Seoul Dynasty uniforms. That black and gold. It's gorgeous. I love how it looks on D'Va. I guess I'm a Seoul Dynasty fan now." I think we've all had that friend who just bought the Oakland Raiders football jersey, you know, back in the day just because it looked cool. Now they're a Raiders fan for whatever reason. So I think there's going to be some of that as well.

When you talk about trying to make something broader and appeal to more people, that means that you're looking for multiple avenues for people to get into the experience. Obviously, I think what we all understand is--with that highly competitive Overwatch player, esports fan--what their avenue is. They're going to immediately be attracted to this because of the high-level competition and the players who are playing in the league. But for those who aren't yet familiar with that, we have to give them these other things like the regional-based association or cool uniforms and logos and names for them to associate with.

New Metal Gear Survive Gameplay Video Shows More Weapons, Crafting, And Base Camp

By Chris Pereira on Jan 12, 2018 09:16 pm

In the lead up to the game's beta and release date, Konami continues to showcase more of Metal Gear Survive. A new six-minute video highlights much of what to expect from single-player and the survival game overall.

The video offers some glimpses of story cinematics from Survive. Caskets are dropped off Mother Base into the ocean and the zombie-like enemies are seemingly transported through wormholes into the alternate dimension where the game takes place. We also meet an incredibly dim-witted soldier who talks to a man who is very clearly dead, setting up an attack from the reanimated corpse.

We also get another look at crafting--covering weapons, Base Camp (which we can see evolve over the course of the game), and more. That includes how you can summon or build things like a fence in the middle of the game world, which is used to delay a batch of enemies pursuing the player. In another area, a structure with a ladder is built to allow the player to reach the top of a building.

Weapons are also a big focus, with a wide variety on display. A bow and arrow, flaming bat, giant sledgehammer, and more are used to dispatch enemies at various points.

There has been some skepticism from fans about Survive, both because of the departure from the usual Metal Gear Solid style and the lack of involvement from series creator Hideo Kojima, who no longer works for Konami. Players will have a chance to try the game out for themselves ahead of its PS4, Xbox One, and PC release on February 20, as a Metal Gear Survive beta is scheduled to take place later this month.

Detective Pikachu Release Date For 3DS Announced Alongside New, Huge Amiibo

By Oscar Dayus on Jan 12, 2018 09:07 pm

The Detective Pikachu 3DS game launched in Japan last year, but until now there was no indication the game would come to the West. Now, however, The Pokemon Company has announced that the game will come to both Europe and America on March 23, 2018.

In addition, the company has unveiled a new trailer, which you can watch above, as well as a Detective Pikachu Amiibo. The Amiibo is much larger than the standard sized figures, and when used with the game it will "unlock short videos that may contain helpful hints for your investigation." The Amiibo will cost $30 (with international pricing yet to be revealed), launching on the same day as the game. Finally, a Pikachu-themed New 2DS XL will come to the West on January 26, priced at $160 / £140.

No Caption Provided

The game sees you play as a human detective named Tim Goodman alongside his Pokemon partner, Pikachu. You'll have to "talk to witnesses, hunt for clues, and uncover the secrets of Ryme City." The title is notable since Pikachu can speak English, and he's apparently both "gruff" and "coffee-drinking."

In addition to the game, there's also a live-action Detective Pikachu film on the way, starring Ryan Reynolds. The film--which also stars Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton and The Get Down actor Justice Smith--is coming on May 10, 2019. It is, to some extent, based on the game, and it's being written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls).

Neither the game nor the film are the first time Pikachu has spoken English. Last year, Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You had Pikachu speak properly for the first time--though we didn't think it sounded right. Let's hope Detective Pikachu fares better when it launches for 3DS in March.

Pokemon Go Will Soon No Longer Work On Some Older iPhones

By Kevin Knezevic on Jan 12, 2018 09:05 pm

Pokemon Go continues to receive new features through regular updates, such as the improved AR mode that rolled out for the game last month. Unfortunately for some players, an upcoming Pokemon Go update will also make it unplayable on some older iPhones. Developer Niantic confirmed that the popular mobile game will soon discontinue support for devices that cannot run the latest version of iOS.

"In an upcoming update to Pokemon Go, we will end support for Apple devices not capable of upgrading to iOS 11, such as iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c models," Niantic wrote in an update on the official Pokemon Go website. "This change is a result of improvements to Pokemon Go that push the application beyond the capabilities of the operating systems on such devices."

According to Niantic, Pokemon Go will stop supporting these older iOS devices beginning February 28. "After that date, Trainers using affected devices may no longer be able to access their Pokemon Go accounts from that device, or use their PokeCoins or other items in their Bags," the developer said. Niantic posted a full list of affected devices on its website. They include:

  • iPhone 5c
  • iPhone 5
  • iPad (4th generation)
  • iPad (3rd generation)
  • iPad Mini (1st generation)
  • iPad 2

The most recent update for Pokemon Go introduced the AR+ mode, while more Gen 3 Pokemon originally from the Ruby and Sapphire versions were added as part of Pokemon Go's recent holiday event. Two of Pokemon Go's region-exclusive Gen 3 monsters, Seviper and Zangoose, recently traded regions. Meanwhile, game's first Gen 3 Legendary Pokemon, Groudon, is still available as a Raid Battle at certain Gyms until January 15.

Bungie Announces Some Subtle, But Necessary Changes To Destiny 2

By Alessandro Fillari on Jan 12, 2018 08:41 pm

In a recent blog post, Bungie laid out some sudden and big changes coming to Destiny 2. In addition to a reworked loot drop system, updates to the Crucible, and an expanded scope to recently added Masterwork items, the developers also included mentions of several changes that affect the quality of life for the game, which many fans have been clamoring to see for quite some time.

During the last few months, many fans online have been outspoken about several design decisions and practices that have been occurred in-game. In addition to expressing outrage over Bungie altering experience gains for players without notice, the more dedicated players found that the Eververse--the in-game microtransaction store--featured many items that were otherwise difficult to find on your own. While players were rewarded with Bright Engrams--special Engrams that yield items from the Eververse--these rewards are few and far between, and rarely yield the more high-end items.

Game director Christopher Barrett detailed a very specific road map of upcoming features in the blog post, which also highlighted a number of points that touched upon several annoyances that many of the hardcore players had. For example, players will be able to select multiple emotes for their character, and also more space will be added to the vault. Here's several of the highlights below:

  • Weapon and Ability Balance Pass: Sandbox adjustments based on player feedback and data from the live game. The Sandbox team will share specific changes as we lead up to Season 3.
  • Exotic Weapon and Armor Balance Pass: Exotic weapons and armor are receiving a comprehensive design pass to ensure they stand out from the rest of the gear and offer new, exciting, powerful ways to play.
  • Seasonal Reputation: Specific vendors will now display a Seasonal ranking. Earning reputation will unlock unique Seasonal rewards and will reset each Season.
  • Improved Iron Banner and Faction Rallies: In addition to the changes that you will see when Iron Banner and Faction Rallies return this month, we will continue iterating on these to make them unique, exciting experiences that you all look forward to.
  • Playlist Repetition Reduction: This feature solves the problem of experiencing the same playlist entry multiple times in consecutive or frequent succession for both Crucible and Strikes.
  • End Game Player Pursuits: We agree with your feedback on the imbalance between Achievement and Bright Engram rewards, and we will be making adjustments to shift more rewards into specific endgame pursuits instead of generic XP grinding for Bright Engrams. We are excited to share the details as soon as we have them worked out.
  • Multi-Emote: When multi-emote launches, you will be able to choose which emote you have equipped to each of your four emote slots.
  • Vault Changes: We are targeting an additional 50 slots to player vaults. We don't believe just adding more space is a complete solution and are actively working on other changes to reduce load on your vault space. We are adding an Exotic accessory tab to Vault collections so you will no longer need to spend Vault space on Exotic Ships, Sparrows, and Ghosts.
  • PC Clan Chat: In addition to the Tower chat that is targeted for February, we are adding clan chat to the PC version of the game.
  • Heroic Strike Changes: We'll be introducing modifiers to add more gameplay variety to the experience.

For more info on Destiny 2 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4--such as the changes to microtransactions, the next Faction Rally, masterwork items, and just what is free and paid for content in-game, keep up with GameSpot as we continue our coverage.

Best-Selling PS4 Games For December 2017 On PSN In The US Revealed

By Alex Newhouse on Jan 12, 2018 08:39 pm

The holiday season is finally over, and now we can look back to see which games dominated the Christmas sales rush. Sony has released the charts for the top ten most-downloaded games across PS4, Vita, PlayStation VR, and add-on content, and the lists contain some notable surprises.

Coming in first place on PS4 (and shocking no one) is Call of Duty: WWII, which also happens to be the top-grossing game overall for the year. At second place is the delightful and ridiculous multiplayer game Gang Beasts, which finally launched in full last month. This means that Gang Beasts beat out Star Wars: Battlefront II, coming in at third place, and the perennially popular GTA V at fourth place. Another surprise is the physics-based puzzle game Human: Fall Flat, which ranked at ninth place. Check out the full list below.

On the PSVR list, meanwhile, Job Simulator came in first place, while PlayStation VR Worlds, Superhot VR, Accounting+, and Skyrim VR rounded out the top five. The Vita charts were topped by Metal Gear Solid 3 HD, while Destiny 2's first expansion, The Curse of Osiris, came in first place on the DLC charts. You can see the full lists for Vita, PSVR, add-on content, and PS1 Classics over on Sony's website.

Sony also recently revealed the top ten best-selling games of the whole year, and Call of Duty was, of course, number one. But with Friday the 13th at third place and Horizon: Zero Dawn at fourth, there are still some surprises on this list, too. Check out the full list of best-selling PS4 games here.

Players with access to a Mobile Operations Center or an Avenger will also be able to trick it out with some optional upgrades such as front-facing machine guns. You can take a look at the Lampadati Viseris below.

Additionally, Rockstar is offering double GTA$ and RP rewards on all Lester Contact Missions for a limited time. You'll be able to take advantage of these bonuses until January 15. You can also get a 25% discount off of the following items until that day:

Destiny 2 Devs Define What's Free And What's Paid Going Forward

By Justin Haywald on Jan 12, 2018 08:34 pm

Destiny 2 has been a little unclear about what content is free through updates and what will only be available to players who shell out for the optional DLC, but in an update today on Bungie's official blog, the developer tried to make that designation a little clear.

As the graphic below makes clear, there are three basic tiers of content: expansion, seasons, and Eververse. Expansions are "purchasable updates that typically add new Story, Destinations, and Gear, as well as new Crucible, Strike, and Raid Lair content." So new Legendaries and Exotics, destination rewards, and additional campaign content will require buying into the game's DLC.

Free players will have access to "Iron Banner, Faction Rallies, and their rewards." And the developers added that "new Seasonal rewards from Crucible, Strikes, and Trials of the Nine will be available to all players." This follows the progression from a previous update where, following the cancellation of December's Faction Rally, both that mode and the Iron Banner were opened up to all players.

No Caption Provided

Eververse will still be a separate "elective" purchase, however Bungie is making several big changes to how that content will be distributed. These changes will all go into effect starting February 13 on Xbox One, PS4, and PC with the Crimson Days event, and Bungie promises "even more changes on the way in Season 3." And you should also check out Destiny 2's upcoming Masterworks update, which will introduce armor to the system. Faction Rallies are coming back soon, and quality-of-life changes are on the way.

By Kevin Knezevic on Jan 12, 2018 08:30 pm

As is often the case, those with a PS Plus subscription can take an additional percentage off many of the discounts available now in the PlayStation Store. New Monster Hunter World Video Showcases Gorgeous Coral Highlands Area

By Kevin Knezevic on Jan 12, 2018 08:27 pm

Capcom continues to show off more footage of Monster Hunter World ahead of the game's PS4 and Xbox One launch this month. The latest video the publisher shared gives fans a tour of one of the game's most visually stunning and seldom-seen areas so far, the beautiful Coral Highlands.

In the nearly 10-minute-long video, which you can watch above, Capcom takes viewers through the otherworldly environment. The Highlands resemble an overgrown reef, with towering stalks of coral blanketing the landscape and ziplines linking together different portions of the map. Many unusual-looking monsters can be found in the Coral Highlands, including the fuzzy, bat-like Paolumu and the terrifying Legiana, both of which are encountered in the video.

The Coral Highlands is one of the few maps from Monster Hunter World that Capcom has shown off in great detail. The publisher has also showcased the Ancient Forest and Wildspire Waste, both of which were featured during Monster Hunter World's two beta tests. We also got a peek at volcanic and snowy areas in the recent trailer for the fearsome Elder Dragons.

Capcom is holding a third and final Monster Hunter World beta this month before the game launches. As before, this beta will be exclusive to PS4 players. It runs from January 19-21 and features the same three monsters to hunt as in the previous betas--the Great Jagras, Anjanath, and Barroth--as well as a new monster, the Nergigante. A similar beta hasn't been announced for the Xbox One version.

Monster Hunter World releases for PS4 and Xbox One on January 26. The game is also coming to PC, though it won't arrive to that platform until this fall. Capcom recently explained why PC players will have to wait longer for Monster Hunter World. A group of Monster Hunter fans have also begun an initiative to mentor newcomers to the series.

The list encompasses the most downloaded PS4 games and DLC throughout 2017, and while many of last year's biggest releases place prominently on the list, there are also a few surprises among them.

The No. 1 best-selling PS4 game in the US was Call of Duty: WWII, the latest installment in Activision's blockbuster franchise. Amazon Prime members can now claim another freebie from Twitch. Beginning today, January 10, you can snag a pair of free Kobolds & Catacombs card packs for Blizzard's collectible card game, Hearthstone, for a limited time.

To receive your card packs, you'll need to have an active Blizzard account with a free Hearthstone license and link that with your Twitch Prime account. You can then simply head over to Twitch and click the button at the bottom of the page to redeem the offer. The Kobolds & Catacombs packs will be available until February 10, giving you a month to claim the items.

Twitch Prime is one of the perks included in Amazon Prime, so those who already subscribe to Amazon's premium service will be able to receive free in-game items. Twitch regularly offers Prime members freebies for a variety of titles. In addition to the above Hearthstone offer, players can still claim a free Rare and Epic supply drop in Call of Duty: WWII.

Kobolds & Catacombs is the latest expansion for Hearthstone. It launched last month and added 135 new cards, several new card types, and more to the collectible card game. You can see all of the new Kobolds & Catacombs cards in our gallery. The expansion also introduced a roguelike-inspired single-player mode called Dungeon Run. Players don't need to own any cards in order to play Dungeon Run; instead, the game gives you a random allotment of cards and tasks you with making it through a series of encounters, collecting powerful upgrades and treasures along the way.

The World Ends With You Is Getting A Nintendo Switch Release

By Tamoor Hussain on Jan 12, 2018 06:20 pm

The World Ends With You, the RPG originally released by Square Enix for Nintendo DS, is coming to Nintendo Switch in 2018. The announcement of The World Ends With You: Final Remix was made during Nintendo's surprise Direct video, during which it was also confirmed that a "sizeable" new scenario is being added to the title.

In addition to the new content, The World Ends With You: Final Remix will be playable using touchscreen or with traditional controls. The original title allowed players to use a mixture of both to manage action across both the DS's screens.

The news will no doubt be exciting for RPG fans as The World Ends With You has a reputation for being a stylish and unique take on the genre. The World Ends With You is set in Tokyo and is imbued with the spirit of urban youth and the culture that surrounds fashion and music. It's cast of characters are pulled into a parallel plane of existence and forced to take part in a game that will decide their fate. Gameplay was action-focused and spread across both screens, with players interacting through the touchscreen and pressing the physical buttons.

The World Ends With You was produced by Tetsuya Nomura, who is well known for his work on the Final Fantasy series. In GameSpot's The World Ends With You review Randolph Ramsay awarded it a 9/10.

"Flawless presentation, gameplay depth, an engaging story, and innovation all add up to make The World Ends With You a worthy addition to the already-impressive pantheon of Square Enix works," he said. "There's very little to complain about in this package, which makes The World Ends With You a must-have for any DS owner needing an RPG fix."

During the surprise Nintendo Direct a number of other big announcements were made. These include free Super Mario Odyssey DLC and a Dark Souls remaster for Switch. With New Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Costumes, Hyrule Warriors Is Heading To Switch

By Kevin Knezevic on Jan 12, 2018 06:18 pm

Today's surprise Direct presentation revealed a number of new titles in store for Nintendo Switch in the first half of 2018. Along with the newly revealed Switch port of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Nintendo has announced it is bringing another Wii U title, the Zelda hack-and-slash game Hyrule Warriors, to its hybrid console later this year.

Titled Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, the re-release is slated to arrive on Switch sometime this spring. As its name implies, this version is the complete edition of the game. It comes with all of the maps, missions, characters, and DLC from both the original Wii U release and the expanded 3DS version, including Yuga and Ravio from A Link Between Worlds. It also introduces some new content in the form of Breath of the Wild-themed costumes for Link and Zelda.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2

Like the original game, Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition supports two-player local multiplayer on a single console. Whereas the Wii U version gave one player their own display on the Wii U GamePad while the other played on the television, Definitive Edition features a split-screen mode that allows two players to play together using a single Joy-Con controller each.

Hyrule Warriors is a Dynasty Warriors-style Zelda spin-off developed by Koei Tecmo. The game originally released for Wii U back in 2014 and was subsequently ported to 3DS with new content as Hyrule Warriors Legends. GameSpot awarded the original version an 8/10 in our Hyrule Warriors review. The game's spiritual successor, Fire Emblem Warriors, was released for Switch and New 3DS in October 2017.

Hyrule Warriors isn't the only high-profile Switch port Nintendo revealed today. In addition to Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, the cult DS classic The World Ends with You is coming to Switch this year, as is Dark Souls Remastered (which was also confirmed for PC, PS4 and Xbox One). You can see more from today's presentation in our roundup of all the Nintendo Direct news and announcements or through the links below.

Here's What Games Switch And 3DS Owners Can Download Now After The Nintendo Direct

By Patrick Faller on Jan 12, 2018 06:12 pm

Today's surprise Nintendo Direct presentation may have been all about new Switch games on the horizon, but the company also announced two new demos, now available for free in the Eshop. A demo is now available for Kirby Battle Royale on 3DS and one for Dragon Quest Builders on Switch is coming today. While it wasn't mentioned in the Switch presentation, Forma.8 is also getting a free demo today.

Kirby Battle Royale is a tournament game where 1-4 players face off in local or online battles. There are 10 different battle modes and a host of abilities, along with a single-player story mode, where you uncover King Dedede's nefarious plan while unlocking abilities and battle types in the Cake Royale tournament. The demo lets you play three battles in the single-player and multiplayer mode, while letting you try out the Sword, Cutter, and Beetle abilities. The game will release on January 19, and you'll be able to transfer any coins you earn in the demo to the full game at that time.

Meanwhile, players will be able to try out a demo of Dragon Quest Builders on Nintendo Switch. First released for PS4 and Vita in 2016, it's a sandbox spinoff of the Dragon Quest series positioned as the series' answer to Minecraft. The game has a very blocky visual style, with your primary objective being to find materials to craft buildings and other objects in order to rebuild the world of Alefgard (the backdrop for the first-ever Dragon Quest title). When it releases on February 9, it will come with Switch-exclusive content, like the ability to gather special materials with the Great Sabrecub to unlock retro customization options.

Also coming today in a free demo for Switch, Forma.8 is Metroidvania-style action-adventure game with a cool visual style and a huge world to explore. It puts you on the surface of an alien planet, where you're stranded alone. Your mission is to recover a lost, powerful energy source while discovering lots of mysteries about the world around you. The full game was released for Switch in August.

Nintendo also dropped tons of Switch news during today's Direct, including a port of Dark Souls and new DLC for games like Super Mario Odyssey, Mario + Rabbids, and Pokken Tournament DX. For all the news and announcements, check out GameSpot's full rundown of today's Nintendo Direct.

New Mario + Rabbids DLC Makes Another Iconic Nintendo Character Playable On Switch

By Oscar Dayus on Jan 12, 2018 06:11 pm

Nintendo has revealed more details on the previously confirmed single-player DLC for Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. The story expansion will include a a new world and a new character for the Switch game: Donkey Kong.

We don't know too much else about the add-on as yet, but it will be included in the game's £16 / $20 season pass when it launches this spring, though you can also buy the new DLC separately. That season pass has already delivered DLC steampunk weapons and pixelated weapons, while a PvP mode was released as a free add-on in December. You can read more and see some gameplay of that in our in-depth look at how Mario + Rabbids' PvP mode revamps the game. The additional content expands on what was already an accomplished game, which we awarded a 9/10 in our Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle review.

"Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle exudes off-beat optimism that never dissolves," wrote our critic, Edmond Tran. "It's a consistent delight, no matter how challenging the road becomes, because Kingdom Battle's unique turn-based tactics system is in every way a pleasure to engage with. Coupled with the annoyingly infectious allure of Rabbids, and the always delightful, colorful world of the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is an implausibly engrossing formula that is positively challenging and endlessly charming."

The news of the Donkey Kong campaign DLC was revealed during the most recent Nintendo Direct, which you can watch here. Other big announcements include include free Super Mario Odyssey DLC and a Dark Souls remaster for Switch. Mario + Rabbids isn't the only game that'll star the Mario universe's resident gorilla this year: Nintendo also announced that Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is coming to Nintendo Switch this year. Nintendo has announced that new Pokemon characters will be introduced Pokken Tournament DX, the Nintendo Switch fighting game, through upcoming DLC. The Deluxe Battle Pack was announced during its surprise Nintendo Direct and is available to purchase now.

New content will become available to those that purchase it in two waves, with the first arriving on January 31. This initial wave will include Aegislash as a new fighter and Mega Rayquaza and Mimikyu as support characters. This will be followed by the second wave of content on March 23, with Blastoise being added as a new playable fighter. Mew and Celebi will also be included as support characters. Nintendo is also giving a new selection of avatar items to those that purchase the Deluxe Battle Pack now.

Pokken Tournament was originally released for the Wii U. In the original Pokken Tournament review, GameSpot awarded it a 9/10. "Nintendo's Wii U provides a paucity of fighting games, but Pokken Tournament has redeemed that drought by being one of the best on any platform," reads the review. "Frequently magnificent to look at, delicately designed, and rewarding for players across all skill levels, it's the Pokemon fighting game deserving of a 20-year wait."

During the surprise Nintendo Direct a number of other big announcements were made. These include free Super Mario Odyssey DLC and a Dark Souls remaster for Switch. Dark Souls Remastered On Xbox One, PS4, And PC Announced

By Tamoor Hussain on Jan 12, 2018 06:01 pm

Bandai Namco has confirmed that Dark Souls Remastered is being released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 25. This is in addition to the Nintendo Switch version of Dark Souls Remastered revealed during the surprise Direct event. According to a press release, Dark Souls Remastered is being developed by From Software, the studio behind the original trilogy, instead of being outsourced to a third-party studio.

"Experience the rich world of Dark Souls in upscaled 4K resolution with 60FPS when playing on a PlayStation 4 Pro system, Xbox One X, and PC," reads the press release. "Also, 1080p resolution with 30FPS is available when playing the game on Nintendo Switch with its TV mode."

"From their first timid steps to absolute mastery, players will build their characters by strategically adapting to daunting foes, exploring haunting locations, and amassing a large collection of weapons, armour and magic spells to utilise for a truly unique playstyle."

Dark Souls Remastered will also support "up to six players" for online multiplayer. A Dark Souls Trilogy box has been announced for PlayStation 4 in Japan. It features Dark Souls Remastered, Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, Dark Souls 3: The Fire Fades Edition. Additionally, it will have soundtracks for each of the games, knight and bonfire bookends, an encyclopedia, and a special art set. As of yet this has not been announced for other regions.

At this point, developer From Software's Dark Souls doesn't need much explaining. It's a beloved, influential game that is critically acclaimed and has a fanbase as passionate about it today as they were when it originally launched in. These people have been calling out for a remaster of the game, especially considering that the original version had a number of glaring technical faults.

In GameSpot's original Dark Souls review Kevin VanOrd awarded it a 9.5/10, describing it as "riveting."

"Dark Souls requires intense focus," he said. "This isn't a lighthearted romp in a bright and colorful fantasy world; it's a methodical journey into the frightening unknown. And that's what makes it so riveting. Some games try to scare you with bump-in-the-night shocks and far-off howls, but Dark Souls doesn't require such predictable methods of terror. Its terrors emanate from its very core, each step bringing you closer to another inevitable death.

"How amazing that such a terrible place could be so inviting. The game's world is so memorable, and its action so thrilling, that it might invade your thoughts even when you aren't playing, silently urging you to escape the real world and return to this far more treacherous one. Dark Souls doesn't just surpass other dungeon crawlers; it skewers them with a razor-sharp halberd and leaves behind their soulless corpses."

Nintendo Switch Port Of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Announced With Release Date

By Oscar Dayus on Jan 12, 2018 05:56 pm

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, the platformer that came exclusively to Wii U in 2014, is getting re-released for Switch, Nintendo has announced. The port will include a new mode when it launches for Nintendo's hybrid console on May 4.

The entire game will be playable in local co-op, with one Joy-Con each, though further details are scarce for the new game right now. We do know, however, that the new mode will star Funky Kong. Donkey Kong, meanwhile, is also the star of new Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle DLC coming this spring.

We enjoyed the Wii U platformer when it first launched, though it wasn't without its problems. In our Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze review, critic Mark Walton wrote: "If the regular levels were as inventive as the boss battles, then Tropical Freeze would be a surefire hit, or at least a game that demands more of your attention. No matter how much I was looking forward to seeing DK in HD, it's difficult to maintain that enthusiasm when the end product plays it so safe: even the visuals fail to make an impact. They're nice enough, but like the level design, the environments are mostly bland. While you could argue that the visual style is true to the series, I think even traditionalists wouldn't mind something with a little more pizzazz behind it. As it stands, this a sometimes fun but mostly uninspired and unimaginative entry in the Donkey Kong series."

New Nintendo Switch Mario Tennis Game Revealed During Direct In January 2018

By Oscar Dayus on Jan 12, 2018 05:54 pm

As part of today's Nintendo Direct mini presentation, the Japanese company revealed a new Mario Tennis game for Switch. Called Mario Tennis Aces, the title will be the first Mario sports game for Switch since the console's launch last year, and it's coming in Spring 2018.

Interestingly, Aces will contain a new story mode. That makes it the first Mario Tennis game to include a campaign since 2005's Mario Tennis: Power Tour (known as Mario Power Tennis in Europe and Australia). Few other details have been revealed so far, though we do know the game is being made by long-time Mario sports developer Camelot. You can watch today's presentation in its entirety here.

The most recent Mario sports game was Mario Sports Superstars, which launched in 2017 for 3DS. The last standalone Mario Tennis game, meanwhile, came for Wii U in 2015. We awarded it a 6/10 in our Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash review. "Ultra Smash does just enough to get by," wrote critic Scott Butterworth. "At moments it shines and at others it frustrates, but mostly it just coasts. Without substantial content to drive longevity, you may end up switching back to Mario Kart sooner than later, but if you're playing online--or better yet, with your friends at home--you'll likely overcome the game's frustrations and squeeze a solid few hours of fun out of its fast-paced, power-up-driven action."

Nintendo Switch's Dark Souls Remastered Confirmed In Surprise January 2018 Direct Video

By Justin Haywald on Jan 12, 2018 05:52 pm

Nintendo has a reputation for strong first-party games but limited third-party support. But with Nintendo Switch, the company is looking to turn that reputation around. And with today's surprise announcement of Dark Souls Remastered, the hybrid console is looking like an even friendlier platform for hardcore gaming experiences.

Nintendo ended today's Direct Mini presentation with a very short trailer and a May 25 release for Dark Souls Remastered. Dark Souls' previous re-release on PC was dubbed the Prepare to Die edition, which makes it sound a separate version of the game. However, in a press release following the Direct, Nintendo clarified that Remastered "includes the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, as well as improved framerate and resolution from the original." A remastered version of Dark Souls is also coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Dark Souls Remastered joins other surprising titles that have released on Nintendo's platform, such as last year's Doom and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as well as the upcoming Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and Payday 2. And while it may not be exclusive, it joins the ever-expanding list of Nintendo Switch games coming in 2018.

You can catch up on all the other news and announcements from today's short Direct presentation here, including the release date for Payday 2 on Switch as well as details for a free update to Super Mario Odyssey.

Free Super Mario Odyssey DLC Revealed For Nintendo Switch, Here's What It Adds

By Peter Brown on Jan 12, 2018 05:50 pm

During the surprise Nintendo Direct Mini this morning, Nintendo announced that Super Mario Odyssey is receiving a free update in February with new items and opportunities to compete with other players online. Once the update is released, players who have completed the story mode can look forward to a new mode called Balloon World.

This area can be entered by talking to Luigi atop a skyscraper in New Donk City. Balloon World lets you hide balloons within stages that other players must race to find, and conversely, you can compete while racing to find other balloons hidden by players from across the globe--everyone's performances are ranked online.

The update will also introduce three new costumes: a Super Mario Sunshine-themed shirt and glasses, a musician costume, and a full set of knight armor. Lastly, new snapshot filters for the photo mode will also come with the update, including one that lets you create your own gold-tinted Mario coin pic.

This update is one of the many announcements from this morning's Nintendo Direct Mini, and you can catch up with all of the news here or through the links at the bottom of this story.

Super Mario Odyssey earned a 10 from us late last year, and GameSpot voted it the third best game of 2017. It was a great year for Nintendo overall, with Switch becoming the fastest selling console in the US, and Super Mario Odyssey taking the top slot of Amazon's best-selling games of the year.

Watch The Nintendo Direct Mini For January 2018 And See All The New Switch Games Coming

By Justin Haywald on Jan 12, 2018 05:49 pm

Following rampant speculation online that Nintendo had something new to share, the company surprised everyone with a full Direct presentation this morning. Without fanfare or announcement, the 15-minute presentation runs through a slew of game announcements and release dates for Nintendo Switch that will occur throughout the first half of 2018. You can watch the full video above.

We have a full rundown of all the Nintendo Direct announcements and news here and in the links below, but the biggest surprise is yet another third-party port for Nintendo's hybrid console: From Software's Dark Souls. The presentation is also notable for only focusing on the first part of 2018, which leaves plenty of room for big announcements and more surprises as we get closer to E3.

Today's games join the ever-expanding roster of confirmed Switch exclusives for 2018, and it looks to set up Nintendo for a strong start to the new year. The Switch closed out 2017 with the distinction of being the fastest-selling home console ever in the US.

There's still plenty of room for big announcements (like an N64 Classic or a Smash Bros. Remaster), but what did you think of today's presentation? Are you happy with the number of games revealed, or did this just leave you wanting more? Let us know in the comments below!
