How The PS4 Secret Of Mana Remake Compares To The Original

By Anonymous on Nov 24, 2017 08:30 pm

The original Secret of Mana was one of my favorite games back in 1993. It's story is a tale of lost identity, it has a gameplay loop that revolves around upgrading unique weapons, and the game's quirky radial menu system still feels fresh today. This week, after playing several hours of an in-development build of the PS4 Secret of Mana remake, I found lot of things to like, a few things that aren't great, and several places I hope the developers can still improve on the original.

Obviously, the first thing you notice about the Secret of Mana remake is its graphical upgrade; and for the most part, the remake looks better. Despite the nostalgia I have for the 16-bit era, there are some details that just come through better in 3D. Take the opening boss battle against a massive mantis creature. The 2D sprite from the original game (the introductory boss never turns; you only ever see it from the front) is replaced with a version that not only looks more complete, but it provides a more enjoyable fight since you can circle around and attack it from behind.

With this graphical update, the main characters stand out, showing off minutiae in costume design that was lost in their 16-bit forms. And smaller enemies come to life in ways that, while not radically different, feel like they are free from the constraints of their flat-sprite animations. However, not everything benefits equally from the transition to more-detailed models. The manic dancing of the game's shopkeepers, for instance, is distracting and feels out-of-place. In the original, the movement helped bring those characters out of the background, but in the remake it just looks weird. And the re-used NPCs, a regular occurrence in RPG design from the Secret of Mana's original era, feel a little more egregious and harder to ignore when the game has gone through such a huge facelift.

But while the the gameplay looks better overall, Secret of Mana's cutscenes are a mess. Now, I don't mean the new introduction (which you can watch in the video above). The mix there of hand-drawn art with minimal animation is gorgeous and captures the beauty of the game's lush setting. But when the story begins in earnest and you're staring into the eyes of a character that looks like it was pulled straight from a mobile port of the game, it's hard not be disappointed. Secret of Mana's remake seems to use the same in-game models for both gameplay and close-up cinematics. And those characters that look great from a distance feel like '90s CGI cartoon models when you zoom in too close, with the stiff, plastic look of old shows like Reboot.

Part of that is because the characters mouths and faces don't move, so it gives the impression that everyone is wearing a mask. The main characters have a few different mouth shapes, and sometimes characters will close one or both eyes, but otherwise, you're watching passive faces read out overdramatic lines. That effect is especially jarring with characters like the bully with a wide, toothy grin that you meet in the game's opening. He always has the same wide-mouthed grin, even when he's angry or surprised, and it's endlessly distracting.

The other problem with the cutscenes is something that should be a positive for the remake--this version adds fully voiced dialogue for everything, from the cut-scenes to the the ancillary dialogue of all the villagers. But at least in this preview build, it's not very good. The spoken lines draw attention to the sometimes weak writing and odd translation choices (why would you say you need a "weapon" to cut through bushes to get to town?). But the voice directing is just mediocre. There is one bright aspect to this, however; in the game's settings you can turn on Japanese voice acting at any time. It's still not great, but it is an improvement over the English cast and a really nice additional feature.

Another welcome option is the ability to change the game's music from the remake's arrangements to the original 16-bit soundtrack. To the game's credit, the re-arranged soundtrack is fantastic, but the original score still holds up beautifully, throughout the game's early hours.

The sound and graphics see the biggest changes from the original, and although those options feel mostly locked-in at this point, there are some other elements that I hope have time for minor tweaks before the game's full release. The equipment screen has been altered in the remake into something much more intuitive, but when you're buying armor from merchants you're still given no indication whether or not you already own a piece of equipment, who has what equipped, or whether the item you're looking at is is any better for your party. In addition, consumables still have no description, so you also have to buy and use something just to find out what it does, and several items have very steep price tags for such trial-and-error shenanigans. This final omission is particularly odd since the remake adds a Guide option to the menu. But this extra info is limited to just characters, weapons, and enemies, and even there it just gives you a closer look at the models; there are no additional descriptions.

Combat is more complex in the remake, though it needs some modifications to make it more consistent. For example, in the original Secret of Mana, your one major sword attack was simply a wide, sweeping blade arc. In the remake, you can alternate between that same wide swing or a forward jab, but sometimes even when you're standing still and expecting to execute a wide arc swing, your character throws out a thrust instead (the pattern seems to be two big arc swings followed by a thrust, regardless of whether you're moving the analog stick or not). It's better to have control over what kind of attacks you'll throw out than to feel like your character might do something unexpected.

And one minor (but very missed) element not included in the remake is how the the original Secret of Mana indicates when you're back at 100% for an attack. In the combat system, there's a quickly replenishing stamina gauge; you can throw out a flurry of attacks, but each blow you land before getting back to 100% is substantially lower in power. Both versions of the game have an audible ding when you return to full strength, but the SNES version also made your character flash slightly until you were at 100%. It's such a small difference, but it made knowing when to attack much clearer, and let you focus your attention on your character and enemies rather pulling you away to look at the stamina gauge.

But beyond that lack of attack consistency and the flashing indicator, combat is better in the remake. You can switch between party members with a tap of the directional pad. The game has added a customizable hot button for quickly using items--you can set a restorative piece of candy to R1 or R2 for a quick pick-me-up without completely pausing battle. And the drop-in, drop-out local multiplayer works just as well as it did back when I was a kid.

The Secret of Mana remake isn't out until February of next year, so there's still plenty of time for refinement from the preview build that I played. And while there are some genuine improvements from the original, there are also a few weird missteps that make it difficult to recommend its predecessor--especially when the original is readily available on the SNES classic. But we'll be keeping a close eye on this version as it progresses. If nothing else, the remake holds a lot of promise for a future of 16-bit remakes done right.

Every Friday The 13th Movie Ranked By Total Jason Voorhees Kills

By Anonymous on Nov 24, 2017 08:30 pm

For close to 40 years, Jason Voorhees has been hacking and slashing his way through drug-abusing teens, sexually frustrated camp counselors, and futuristic soldiers inside a dumb-looking space station in a movie that makes no sense, canonically. The Friday the 13th series is one of the most popular and successful horror franchises of all time, mainly because of its terrifying, unstoppable star: the machete-wielding Jason. He's racked up quite a kill total over the years, and while we tend to rank movies by box office totals or overall quality, we couldn't think of a better way to rate this series than by the number of kills Voorhees accumulated over the years. Here's every Jason movie, ranked by his body count.

12. Friday the 13th (1980)

Coming in at last place is the original Friday the 13th, as Jason Voorhees wasn't the killer. His mother Pamela was. This movie came along early in the slasher movie genre, just a couple years after Halloween.

Total Jason Voorhees kills: 0

Note: Pamela Voorhees killed nine people in case you were curious.

11. Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985)

Conceptually, A New Beginning isn't a terrible idea, as the movie follows Tommy Jarvis--who killed Jason Voorhees years prior. Tommy now lives in a halfway house for mentally ill teenagers. However, Jason has returned and is on a killing spree. Here's the crazy twist: it's not Jason committing the murders. It's a paramedic named Roy doing all the killing, and there are some really bizarre kills here, like eyes being gouged out by garden shears.

Total Jason Voorhees kills: 0

Note: Roy killed 17 people.

10. Friday the 13th: Part 2 (1981)

The 1981 sequel introduces Jason Voorhees for the first time; however, he has yet to get his signature hockey mask. He instead wears a burlap sack over his head. At this point in the series, there aren't any over-the-top kills, as the craziest one is someone being strangled with barbed wire.

Total Jason Voorhees kills: 9

Note: The count is possibly 10 because it's up for debate that Paul was killed off-screen, but there's no way for sure knowing who killed him.

9. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

While the fourth movie is titled The Final Chapter, in no way is it actually the "final chapter" in the series. This Friday the 13th installment features Jason killing someone with a garden claw.

Total Jason Voorhees kills: 13

8. Friday the 13th Part III (1982)

Of course, Friday the 13th Part III was in 3D, which was all the rage during the '80s. This movie marks the first time Jason crushed someone's head, as well as the first time he wears his signature hockey mask.

Total Jason Voorhees kills: 12

7. Friday the 13th (2009)

The 2009 Friday the 13th reboot packed the first three original films into one, non-stop movie. Jason gets a headshot with a bow and arrow in this one.

Total Jason Voorhees kills: 13

6. Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)

Jason has been at the bottom of Camp Crystal laying dormant. In The New Blood, a telekinetic teenager releases him and must find a way to stop him. The most ridiculous kill of the film comes from Jason driving a party horn through a young woman's eye. This is also the movie that features Jason swinging a sleeping bag--with someone inside--against a tree. It's easily the most memorable kill in the franchise.

Total Jason Voorhees kills: 15

5. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

In Jason Takes Manhattan, Voorhees gets on a boat headed to Manhattan with a group of graduating high school students and takes them all out, one by one. Sadly, unlike the title states, he spends very little of the movie actually in New York City. The kills in this movie get more inventive and one of the most ridiculous comes when Jason literally punches someone so hard that their head flies off their body.

Total Jason Voorhees kills: 15*

Notes: Count could be as many as 18. There are a couple accidents here as well as a guy who Jason throws into a mirror at a diner, but there's no confirmed kill there. In addition, there is no way of knowing how many people were killed when the S.S. Lazarus sank.

4. Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI (1986)

Jason comes back to life in the sixth film. Tommy Jarvis, from A New Beginning, tries to dispose of Jason's body but accidentally brings him back to life. While the movie features a lot of machete-hacking mayhem, the best kill comes from an officer getting a metal dart thrown into his skull.

Total Jason Voorhees kills: 18

3. Jason X (2001)

Everything about Jason X is ridiculous. In the 25th century, Jason wakes up on a spaceship and insanity ensues. There are a lot of silly kills in this movie, including a woman's head getting frozen in liquid nitrogen, then smashed on a countertop.

Total Jason Voorhees kills: 21*

Note: There's no way of knowing how many people died when the Solaris space station exploded.

2. Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

Freddy vs. Jason pits the two most iconic supernatural killers in horror history--sorry Michael Myers--and they fight to the "death." There aren't a lot of inventive kills in this movie; "however, while wielding a flaming machete, Jason does take out a whole bunch of party-goers at a rave, which is quite enjoyable to watch, unless you're into that whole rave scene.

Total Jason Voorhees kills: 22*

Note: Hard to pinpoint how many people Jason killed during the cornfield rave scene.

1. Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)

Jason Goes to Hell not only has a ridiculous plot, but it has the most Jason Voorhees kills in the franchise. The supernatural monster is killed by an FBI special ops team, and his spirit--stay with me--starts possessing people, which ends up with the possessed killing everyone around them. It may not be the body of Voorhees, but his spirit is technically doing the killing. The most ridiculous kill comes when a woman is drowned in a deep fryer.

Total Jason Voorhees kills: 25

Note: 10 of the deaths--including a group of civilians that are killed--happen off-screen.

Since Jason's first murder in Friday the 13th: Part II--in 1981--he's killed 163 people, and even more if you count the people aboard the space station blowing up in Jason X or those who died when the ship sank in Jason Takes Manhattan. Once again, the kills in the first film and A New Beginning don't count because it wasn't Jason doing the killing. So while 163 is our total from this list, a few of the murders are up for debate.

Total Jason Voorhees kills: 163

Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 3: Fractured Mask Review

By Anonymous on Nov 24, 2017 05:42 pm

This review will contain spoilers for previous episodes of Batman: The Enemy Within.

In Episode 2 of Batman: The Enemy Within, Bruce Wayne found himself behind enemy lines working as a member of The Pact, a coalition of villains hatching a plan to wreak havoc in Gotham City. In Episode 3, Fractured Mask, developer Telltale pumps the brakes on high-stakes schemes in favour of something a little more intimate. The result is an episode that only inches the overarching narrative forward, but takes a big leap in exploring the fragile nature of Bruce Wayne's duality.

At the end of the last episode, Catwoman--who has been absent since Season 1--made a surprise return, and in Episode 3 it's revealed she's in league with Harley, Bane, Mr. Freeze, and John "Not The Joker Yet" Doe. But Catwoman is also driven to take revenge against The Pact--and the mysterious forces they represent--for the death of Riddler. Through her, Fractured Mask recontextualizes Riddler's actions somewhat by indicating that his plans may not have aligned completely with his villainous compatriots. The Riddler that Catwoman knew was a different, better person than the one Batman faced, and ultimately the one The Pact killed. With this in mind, she takes it into her own hands to seek retribution.

Naturally, this places Bruce in a tricky spot. Since Catwoman's plans threaten to undermine his own efforts as an undercover operative for Amanda Waller, the two find themselves at odds professionally. Complicating matters even further is the burgeoning romance between them which, amongst the deception and subterfuge, allows them to find some comfort in each other and not completely descend into darkness. This dynamic is at the core of Episode 3 and, for the most part, it is depicted well. Although there are a couple of scenes where Catwoman's attitude pivots jarringly, these eventually culminate in a moment of genuine emotional payoff where the player can choose to develop their relationship in a meaningful way.

Bruce Wayne and Batman's other ties become equally messy in Episode 3. Most impactfully, his friendship with Jim Gordon takes a serious turn for the worse. Since Batman is playing nice with Amanda Waller, who is wrestling control of Gotham's law enforcement operations away from Gordon, the two begin to drift apart. Episode 3 presents a Gordon who has his back against the wall and is desperately trying to remain relevant. He clutches at straws hoping to grasp something significant and, unfortunately, this results in Bruce finding himself in Gordon's crosshairs. It's actually quite sad to see Batman's staunchest ally slowly becoming his demise. Although there is an opportunity to begin repairing this fracturing friendship, taking this step will damage another important one. There aren't very many big decision-making moments in Episode 3, but the few that are there carry enough consequence to make the player pause and think.

Episode 3 also sees old wounds reopened, with Lucius Fox's daughter, Tiffany, becoming embroiled in Batman and Bruce Wayne's activities. As a character, Tiffany hasn't had much screen time but the events of the episode raise her profile considerably. Without spoiling the story, Telltale seems to be motioning towards something that, if it happens, could be very exciting for fans of Batman and for this series.

And then, throughout it all is John Doe, the man being positioned to become Joker. He's a lingering presence that is both charming and unsettling, and Episode 3 hops back and forth between those two personas expertly. Doe continues to be a fascinating take on the character; unsure of who he is but very slowly dipping into the madness that will inevitably consume him. His need to find acceptance sees him craving Harley Quinn's attention, to the point where he puts both himself and his "best friend" Bruce in danger. As with the previous two episodes, John Doe is a standout character, providing levity with some excellently delivered one-liners, throwaway quips, and one hilarious sequence involving shadow puppets.

While Episode 3 has strong characterization, its gameplay feels rather shallow. Outside of the fight sequences, which are well choreographed but a little trite, there's one big puzzle for players to solve. It takes place in Riddler's hideout and, given his love of flaunting his intelligence, you'd think it would be elaborate and challenging. However, it's actually trivial to solve, making Riddler seem a bit dull--talk about kicking someone when he's already down.

Nevertheless, Episode 3 of Telltale's Batman: The Enemy Within is well thought out and strongly written. Telltale has weaved together a complicated web of relationships that's becoming strained by the people tangled in it. After two relatively straightforward episodes, this is exactly what the series needed to carry it forward and ensure players are compelled to see it through.

Destiny 2 Xur Location Guide: Where Is Xur, What Exotics Is He Selling? (November 24)

By Anonymous on Nov 24, 2017 04:17 pm

While you're giving thanks this weekend remember your old pal Xur, who pops up in Destiny 2 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC every week with brand new Exotic weapons and gear for you to pick up. Destiny 2's equivalent of an Amazon Prime Now deliveryman is hanging out on Io and, unlike the other locations he usually pops up in, this one can be tricky to get to.

While navigating to his general area is fairly simple if you open up the map and put a marker on him, once you're there, you'll need to keep an eye open for a very small, very dark cave entrance. It's up in the far left-hand side as you enter Giant's Scar. If you're having trouble finding it, check out our Xur location guide video above, or keep a close watch on other players and you'll see them going in and out.

But is it worth the trip? Take a look below and you'll find a gallery of every Exotic Xur has this week, as well as the information you need on each of the items.

  • Mask of the Quiet One (Helmet) - 23 Legendary Shards
  • Starfire Protocol (Warlock Class Chest Armor) - 23 Legendary Shards

Destiny 2's Iron Banner event has returned; it is live right now on all platforms and runs until 1 AM PT / 4 AM ET / 9 AM GMT on November 28. The game mode this time is Clash, which is Destiny 2's version of Team Deathmatch. Notably, this is the first Iron Banner event since Destiny 2 launched for PC at the end of October.

In other Destiny 2 news, Bungie recently announced a lot of new details about the game's first expansion, Curse of Osiris, which is coming in December. In addition to seeing the first campaign mission, we learned about Raid Lairs and saw some Curse of Osiris gear, as well as the newly revamped Lighthouse area. The DLC releases on December 5, at which time the weekly reset schedule will change and Destiny 2 will receive Xbox One X and PS4 Pro enhancements.

Toys R Us Black Friday Video Game Deals 2017: PS4, Switch, Xbox One, 3DS Games On Sale

By Anonymous on Nov 24, 2017 07:48 am

It took a bit longer than some other retailers, but Toys R Us has finally given us a look at its Black Friday 2017 deals. The retailer's ad has been released, and while its focus is on toys, as you'd expect, there are also quite a few deals to be had across PS4 and Xbox One, as well as some for Nintendo Switch and 3DS.

In terms of hardware, we're seeing similar offers to elsewhere. The Switch console itself is not listed, nor is Xbox One X or PS4 Pro. However, the older models of those two consoles are on sale. You can pick up a 1 TB PS4 for $200, or a 500 GB Xbox One S for $190. In both cases, you won't get any bundled games. The LucidSound LS20 wired headset, which works with both consoles, will be on sale for 50% off, dropping its price to $40. Select controllers for Microsoft and Sony boxes are $20 off, bringing the cheapest options to $40.

A number of games are on sale as well, although frustratingly, the ad only lists the amount you'll save--not the actual price. In our comprehensive list of deals below, we've calculated the sale price using the currently listed MSRP on the Toys R Us website. In some cases, this results in prices that are markedly higher than what the competition is offering, while other prices are roughly in line with what you'll find at places like Best Buy and Walmart. In other words, some of the actual prices may end up being lower than what we've listed, but you can at least get a sense of what the possible costs will be. None are likely to end up higher than what we've laid out.

Among the prices we've fairly confident in, Call of Duty: WWII, the just-released shooter, will be on sale for $45. Destiny 2, NBA 2K18, and WWE 2K18 will all be $35, while South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Forza Motorsport 7, and Assassin's Creed Origins will be $40. Persona 5 will drop to $30, as will Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Madden NFL 18, FIFA 18, and Grand Theft Auto V.

You can find the full list of games, consoles, and accessories in Toys R Us's flyer below or on its website. The ad doesn't make it clear if it will have more games on sale than those included. Also of note is the special green Zelda 2DS, which is launching on Black Friday at select retailers, is not shown, so you may need to head elsewhere if you're interested. For a complete rundown on Black Friday deals, hit the links below to check out our other sale roundups.

Marvel Heroes Shutdown Escalates; New Open World RPG From Forza Horizon Dev! - GS News Roundup

By Anonymous on Nov 24, 2017 06:30 am

Jess McDonell rejoins Dan Crowd on today's GS News, and although it's Thanksgiving, there's still news to talk about! Here's what we cover today:

To The Moon Sequel Gets Release Date

To The Moon has been called one of the saddest games of all time, and now, it's getting a sequel called Finding Paradise. A strangely humorous new trailer for it was released along with a launch date, which is very very soon!

Forza Horizon Devs Recruiting For Open World RPG

How good was Forza Horizon 3? Very good. Now, the developers behind the open-world racing game are getting out of their cars (presumably) and gearing up to develop an open-world RPG. They've hired a bunch of developers who have experience with some pretty major titles, like Grand Theft Auto V and Metal Gear Solid V. That sounds pretty exciting, so get all the details in today's episode.

Marvel Heroes Shutdown Moves Forward

And in some pretty crappy Thanksgiving news, a number of developers and obtained documents from Marvel Heroes developer Gazillion entertainment have suggested that the previously announced shutdown of the game, due to happen at the end of the year, is in fact happening much sooner. That's on top of the news that Gazillion has terminated the bulk of its workforce without any severance pay or other owed benefits. Tune in to find out all the details, and spare a thought for all the developers affected.

What did you think about today's news? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, and we'll see you tomorrow!

Chewbacca Smacks A Porg In The Latest Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer

By Anonymous on Nov 24, 2017 02:17 am

Teaser and promos for Star Wars: The Last Jedi seem to be arriving at a rate of several a week now. Hot the heels of this recent TV spot, we have an even shorter promo, which you can watch above. We've seen much of the footage before, but it's worth checking out for a funny moment between Chewie and a Porg in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon.

The Last Jedi is directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, and Andy Serkis. It hits theaters on December 15.

Unsurprisingly, the movie is expected to have a huge opening weekend at the box office. Early first-weekend projections have predicted that the film will make $215 million in the US over its first three days. While that would be below The Force Awakens' first-weekend haul of $247 million, it would still be the second-biggest of all time, ahead of Jurassic World's $208 million opening in 2015.

In related news, it was revealed last week that Johnson will write and direct a new Star Wars trilogy. Work on the next set of movies will begin after the release of JJ Abrams' Episode IX in 2019. In addition, Disney is planning a live-action Star Wars TV show, which will be available on its upcoming streaming service.
