How The PS4 Secret Of Mana Remake Compares To The Original

By Justin Haywald on Nov 24, 2017 08:30 pm

The original Secret of Mana was one of my favorite games back in 1993. It's story is a tale of lost identity, it has a gameplay loop that revolves around upgrading unique weapons, and the game's quirky radial menu system still feels fresh today. This week, after playing several hours of an in-development build of the PS4 Secret of Mana remake, I found lot of things to like, a few things that aren't great, and several places I hope the developers can still improve on the original.

Obviously, the first thing you notice about the Secret of Mana remake is its graphical upgrade; and for the most part, the remake looks better. Despite the nostalgia I have for the 16-bit era, there are some details that just come through better in 3D. Take the opening boss battle against a massive mantis creature. The 2D sprite from the original game (the introductory boss never turns; you only ever see it from the front) is replaced with a version that not only looks more complete, but it provides a more enjoyable fight since you can circle around and attack it from behind.

With this graphical update, the main characters stand out, showing off minutiae in costume design that was lost in their 16-bit forms. And smaller enemies come to life in ways that, while not radically different, feel like they are free from the constraints of their flat-sprite animations. However, not everything benefits equally from the transition to more-detailed models. The manic dancing of the game's shopkeepers, for instance, is distracting and feels out-of-place. In the original, the movement helped bring those characters out of the background, but in the remake it just looks weird. And the re-used NPCs, a regular occurrence in RPG design from the Secret of Mana's original era, feel a little more egregious and harder to ignore when the game has gone through such a huge facelift.

But while the the gameplay looks better overall, Secret of Mana's cutscenes are a mess. Now, I don't mean the new introduction (which you can watch in the video above). The mix there of hand-drawn art with minimal animation is gorgeous and captures the beauty of the game's lush setting. But when the story begins in earnest and you're staring into the eyes of a character that looks like it was pulled straight from a mobile port of the game, it's hard not be disappointed. Secret of Mana's remake seems to use the same in-game models for both gameplay and close-up cinematics. And those characters that look great from a distance feel like '90s CGI cartoon models when you zoom in too close, with the stiff, plastic look of old shows like Reboot.

Part of that is because the characters mouths and faces don't move, so it gives the impression that everyone is wearing a mask. The main characters have a few different mouth shapes, and sometimes characters will close one or both eyes, but otherwise, you're watching passive faces read out overdramatic lines. That effect is especially jarring with characters like the bully with a wide, toothy grin that you meet in the game's opening. He always has the same wide-mouthed grin, even when he's angry or surprised, and it's endlessly distracting.

The other problem with the cutscenes is something that should be a positive for the remake--this version adds fully voiced dialogue for everything, from the cut-scenes to the the ancillary dialogue of all the villagers. But at least in this preview build, it's not very good. The spoken lines draw attention to the sometimes weak writing and odd translation choices (why would you say you need a "weapon" to cut through bushes to get to town?). But the voice directing is just mediocre. There is one bright aspect to this, however; in the game's settings you can turn on Japanese voice acting at any time. It's still not great, but it is an improvement over the English cast and a really nice additional feature.

Another welcome option is the ability to change the game's music from the remake's arrangements to the original 16-bit soundtrack. To the game's credit, the re-arranged soundtrack is fantastic, but the original score still holds up beautifully, throughout the game's early hours.

The sound and graphics see the biggest changes from the original, and although those options feel mostly locked-in at this point, there are some other elements that I hope have time for minor tweaks before the game's full release. The equipment screen has been altered in the remake into something much more intuitive, but when you're buying armor from merchants you're still given no indication whether or not you already own a piece of equipment, who has what equipped, or whether the item you're looking at is is any better for your party. In addition, consumables still have no description, so you also have to buy and use something just to find out what it does, and several items have very steep price tags for such trial-and-error shenanigans. This final omission is particularly odd since the remake adds a Guide option to the menu. But this extra info is limited to just characters, weapons, and enemies, and even there it just gives you a closer look at the models; there are no additional descriptions.

Combat is more complex in the remake, though it needs some modifications to make it more consistent. For example, in the original Secret of Mana, your one major sword attack was simply a wide, sweeping blade arc. In the remake, you can alternate between that same wide swing or a forward jab, but sometimes even when you're standing still and expecting to execute a wide arc swing, your character throws out a thrust instead (the pattern seems to be two big arc swings followed by a thrust, regardless of whether you're moving the analog stick or not). It's better to have control over what kind of attacks you'll throw out than to feel like your character might do something unexpected.

And one minor (but very missed) element not included in the remake is how the the original Secret of Mana indicates when you're back at 100% for an attack. In the combat system, there's a quickly replenishing stamina gauge; you can throw out a flurry of attacks, but each blow you land before getting back to 100% is substantially lower in power. Both versions of the game have an audible ding when you return to full strength, but the SNES version also made your character flash slightly until you were at 100%. It's such a small difference, but it made knowing when to attack much clearer, and let you focus your attention on your character and enemies rather pulling you away to look at the stamina gauge.

But beyond that lack of attack consistency and the flashing indicator, combat is better in the remake. You can switch between party members with a tap of the directional pad. The game has added a customizable hot button for quickly using items--you can set a restorative piece of candy to R1 or R2 for a quick pick-me-up without completely pausing battle. And the drop-in, drop-out local multiplayer works just as well as it did back when I was a kid.

The Secret of Mana remake isn't out until February of next year, so there's still plenty of time for refinement from the preview build that I played. And while there are some genuine improvements from the original, there are also a few weird missteps that make it difficult to recommend its predecessor--especially when the original is readily available on the SNES classic. But we'll be keeping a close eye on this version as it progresses. If nothing else, the remake holds a lot of promise for a future of 16-bit remakes done right.

Overwatch Black Friday 2017 Game Deals: All The Sales For PC, PS4, And Xbox One

By Eddie Makuch on Nov 24, 2017 05:30 pm

Black Friday is upon us. The annual shopping bonanza is coming up on Friday, and one of the games that will be on sale is Blizzard's hero shooter Overwatch. The Game of the Year Edition, which contains extra cosmetic items, is going to be about half-off.

Walmart appears to have the best deal this year, offering it on PS4 and Xbox One for only $29. Best Buy, Target, and GameStop will sell the shooter for $30. If you're OK going without a disc, the well-received game is discounted to $30 on the Xbox Store and PlayStation Store. You can get that deal right now if you can't or don't want to wait.

Overwatch isn't a new game, having released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC back in May 2016. But as mentioned, it's great, and due to its massive popularity, Blizzard continues to update and support the game. For example, a new character, Moira, is now playable, while the newest map, Blizzard World, has also been added to the multiplayer hopper.

Below you'll find the full list of all the Overwatch deals we've found so far; we'll continue to update as more Black Friday savings and prices are revealed. You can find our complete coverage of other Black Friday 2017 deals through the links at the bottom of this post.

By Eddie Makuch on Nov 24, 2017 05:29 pm

Black Friday is almost here. It's so close. One of the games that will be discounted nicely this year is Middle-earth: Shadow of War, which was only just released a month ago. If you've been on the fence and waiting for a price drop, you won't be without options.

GameStop appears to have the best deal this year, offering the sequel on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for just $25. Right behind that is Walmart, which will have the game for $29, while Best Buy, Target, and Toys R Us are offering it for $30. Those looking for a digital copy can pick it up for $36 on the Xbox Store, but only if you are an Xbox Live Gold member.

Shadow of War, a sequel to 2014's Shadow of Mordor, was released at the end of October for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. GameSpot's Shadow of War review scored it a 7/10, with reviewer Justin Haywald writing that despite some issues, "It's a fun experience with brilliant moments that provide fascinating insight into some of the untold stories of Middle-earth." You can read our full review here.

In other news, publisher Warner Bros. has announced a series of free DLC updates for Shadow of War, the first of which are launching this week. There are also paid expansions coming to further flesh out the game and story.

Assassin's Creed Origins Black Friday 2017 Deals: All PS4, Xbox One, And PC Discounts And Sales

By Eddie Makuch on Nov 24, 2017 05:28 pm

It's almost Black Friday. The annual shopping bonanza is coming up this Friday, November 25, and there are going to be quite a lot of video game deals to be had. One game marked down nicely is Ubisoft's newly released Assassin's Creed Origins on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

The ambitious, open-world game set in Ancient Egypt launched on October 27 behind a mostly positive critical reception. Best Buy and Target will have the title for only $35 on Black Friday, while Toys R Us will offer the game for $40. Meanwhile, GameStop will offer a discount on the game + Season Pass, cutting it down to $70. The Ubisoft Store's Black Friday PC game sale is now underway, dropping the computer version to $40.

While you have to wait until Black Friday for those deals, the Xbox and PlayStation Stores are selling Origins right now for only $42. If you're OK without a disc and want to play right now, that's a nice option to have.

GameSpot's Assassin's Creed: Origins review scored the game a 7/10. Reviewer Alessandro Fillari said the game reaches new heights in its Egypt setting, but unfortunately, the game "routinely runs into issues that bog down the overall experience." You can read our full review here.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole Black Friday 2017 Game Deals: The PS4, Xbox One, PC Sales

By Eddie Makuch on Nov 24, 2017 05:27 pm

Black Friday 2017 is almost here. Lots and lots of games are on sale this year, including new releases. Ubisoft's South Park: The Fractured But Whole is among them, with a handful of big retailers offering the game's PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions on the cheap.

It looks like Walmart has the best deal this year, offering the game for only $29 on Black Friday. Target has it for $30, while Best Buy will sell the turn-based game for $35 and Toys R Us and GameStop for $40. The Ubisoft Store's Black Friday sale is now underway and drops the PC version to $40, while Steam's sale drops it to $45. Given that the game only just came out in October, those are some pretty sweet deals.

Like its predecessor, The Stick of Truth, Fractured but Whole puts players in the role of the New Kid, who moves into South Park and joins a superhero team with Cartman and other South Park mainstays. GameSpot's Fractured But Whole review scored the game an 8/10. Reviewer Miguel Concepcion said, "It's an accomplishment that this game will wholly entertain devoted fans while delivering a heap of jokes that won't fly over the heads of casual viewers."

If you'd prefer to get Destiny 2 digitally, you'll also find some sizable discounts on Bungie's new title in the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store. Both services have already begun their Black Friday sales, though at the moment only PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold members can take advantage of them. The standard version of Destiny 2 is available in both digital stores for $39. If you're also planning to pick up its DLC, you can purchase the game and expansion pass bundle for $67.49. Meanwhile, the Destiny 2 Digital Deluxe Edition (which also includes the expansion pass and other exclusive content packs) is available for $75. Those without a PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold subscription will gain access to the sales on November 21.

Sales on the PC version have come online through Battle.net. Each version of the game is up to 35% off, bringing its prices in line with the digital console versions. This drops the standard edition to $39, the Expansion Pass bundle version to $67.49, and the Digital Deluxe Edition to $75 right now.

If you're still unsure if Destiny 2 is worth picking up, you can read more about it in our full Destiny 2 review. The game's first expansion, Curse of Osiris, is slated to release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on December 5. Bungie offered some new story details and a look at other content from the upcoming DLC in a recent livestream. Additional streams for Curse of Osiris will take place on November 21 and 29.

You can see the complete list of Destiny 2 deals for PS4 and Xbox One below. We'll continue to update the list as more Black Friday ads and prices are revealed. You can also find all of our other Black Friday 2017 coverage through the links at the bottom of this roundup.

FIFA 18 Black Friday 2017 Deals: The Sales For PS4, Switch, Xbox One, And PC Versions

By Kevin Knezevic on Nov 24, 2017 05:24 pm

Many of this year's biggest game releases will be on sale this Black Friday, including the latest soccer game from EA, FIFA 18. While the title launched fairly recently, you'll be able to get it for half-off (or more) at many retailers on the big shopping day.

You have a lot of options if you're looking to pick the game up for either PS4 or Xbox One. The best deal, price-wise, will be at GameStop; the game retailer will have FIFA 18 for $27. Best Buy, Target, and Toys R Us will all have great deals on the soccer game, as well; each store will sell it for $30. Toys R Us will also have the Nintendo Switch version of FIFA 18 on sale for that price, while Best Buy will sell it for $20.

If you don't want to wait until Black Friday, you can purchase FIFA 18 digitally in the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store, both of which are already offering sale prices ahead of Black Friday. You can pick up the standard edition from the former for $36, while the Ronaldo and Icon Editions cost $48 and $60, respectively. Those in the UK can get the standard game for £36, the Ronaldo Edition for £48, and the Icon Edition for £63.

Xbox Live Gold members will find similar prices for each edition in the Xbox Store, but those without a subscription will end up paying slightly more. Non-Gold members can buy the standard game for $42/£42, the Ronaldo Edition for $56/£56, and the Icon Edition for $70/£63.

If you're planning on picking up another EA Sports game, EA is also offering FIFA 18 bundles in the PlayStation and Xbox Stores. You can purchase the soccer game together with NBA Live 18: The One Edition for $40, while the FIFA 18 & NHL 18 bundle runs for $60. You can get it together with the recently released Need for Speed Payback for $65.

PC players can also purchase FIFA 18 at a discount from the Origin store. Like on consoles, the standard edition is available for $36. However, the Ronaldo and Icon Editions cost a bit more than in either the PlayStation or Xbox Stores; those versions run for $56 and $75, respectively. You can also pick up the FIFA 18 & Need for Speed Payback bundle for $70.

You can find the full list of FIFA 18 Black Friday deals below, which we'll continue to update as more sales are announced. For our full coverage of Black Friday 2018 deals and sales, be sure to check out the links at the bottom of this roundup.

NBA 2K18 Black Friday 2017 Deals: PS4, Xbox One, And PC Sales Now Live

By Chris Pereira on Nov 24, 2017 05:23 pm

Black Friday 2017 is right around the corner, and that means tons of sale prices to be had on video game consoles, accessories, and software. Even very recent releases that just came out--things like Need for Speed Payback, Assassin's Creed Origins, and Call of Duty: WWII--will be on sale. Another one of fall's biggest games, NBA 2K18, will also enjoy some steep discounts at a number of retailers.

Based on the ads that have been released so far, GameStop will offer the best price for Xbox One and PS4: It'll be $27 there. If you're planning on shopping elsewhere, you'll still potentially get it for a price in that neighborhood; Walmart will sell it for $29, while it'll go for $30 at Target and Best Buy. Toys R Us will offer it for $35. If you're interested in Virtual Currency, the microtransaction currency used in the game, Best Buy will sell 200,000 VC ($50's worth) for $40.

On the digital side, the Xbox Store's Black Friday sale has begun, but only for Xbox Live Gold members. It can be purchased from there for $42; non-Gold members will gain access to the sale on November 21. Similarly, a PlayStation Store Black Friday sale has started for PS Plus members that will go live for non-members on November 21. NBA 2K18 is on sale for $42 on PSN for Plus subscribers. The PC version is also available for that price on Steam.

If you're wondering whether this year's basketball sim is worth picking up, you can read our full NBA 2K18 review. Seth Macy awarded it an 8/10 and said, "This year's entry is incredible in so many ways, from graphics, to soundtrack, to the different modes and ways to play hoops. It becomes clear early on that the fastest and easiest way to progress is by spending real money, slightly marring an otherwise tremendous experience."

You can check out a complete list of NBA 2K18 deals for PS4 and Xbox One below. We'll continue to update this as more Black Friday ads are revealed. Amazon, for instance, has still yet to announce anything, so there's plenty more to come. You can also check out all of our other Black Friday coverage through the links at the bottom of this post.

Pokemon 3DS Black Friday 2017 Deals: All The Game Sales And Discounts

By Kevin Knezevic on Nov 24, 2017 05:22 pm

Only one week remains until Black Friday 2017, which means you'll soon be able to find a ton of discounts on video games, consoles, and accessories across all platforms. That's also true for 3DS, which will see a number of its recent and older releases go on sale, including the mainline Pokemon series.

The newest Pokemon titles, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, launch one week ahead of the big shopping day, and while there won't be any notable deals on those games at major retailers this Black Friday, you'll be able to find some nice discounts on the series' previous 3DS installments. Based on the ads that have been released, GameStop will have the best offer for those still looking to pick up Pokemon X and Y or Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Pre-owned versions of those games will be available for $20 apiece, or you can pick up three of them for $40--effectively netting you one of the games for free.

Best Buy will also have discounts on Pokemon X, Y, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire. Each title will cost $20; however, there won't be an additional offer as is the case with GameStop, so if you're looking to pick up more than one version, that remains your best choice. Target, meanwhile, will have doorbuster deals on Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire for $25 each.

While Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon won't be on sale, you'll be able to find discounts on the original Pokemon Sun and Moon versions at some retailers. Both Best Buy and Walmart will sell the two titles for $29 each. That's a good price if you've yet to pick up one of the seventh generation titles and you're not interested in the new features and Pokemon in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

You can check out the complete list of Pokemon deals for 3DS below. We'll continue to update this as more Black Friday ads are revealed. You can also find all of our other Black Friday 2017 coverage and roundups through the links at the bottom of this story.

Call Of Duty: WW2 Black Friday 2017 Deals: Sales For CoD On PS4 And Xbox One Available Now

By Eddie Makuch on Nov 24, 2017 05:21 pm

It's almost Black Friday, that wonderful time of the year when seemingly everything is on sale. This of course includes video games. And if you're looking for the newest Call of Duty game, numerous retailers will offer Call of Duty: WWII for a discount next week.

Based on what we've seen so far in terms of Black Friday ads, it appears Best Buy will have Call of Duty: WWII for the cheapest, offering it for $40. Walmart ($43), Target and Toys R Us ($45), and GameStop ($50) are also discounting the game on Black Friday. Those deals may not sound so great, but for a game that only just came out a few weeks ago, and one that is selling quite well at full price, any discount is notable. Black Friday Xbox Store and PlayStation Store sales are now underway for Xbox Live Gold and PS Plus members respectively, dropping the WWII Digital Deluxe Edition to $90. Those digital sales will open to everyone on November 21.

Another notable deal comes from Walmart, which is offering a combo pack that includes Call of Duty: WWII and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare for $59. And if you're looking for older Call of Duty games, Advanced Warfare, Black Ops III, Black Ops III Zombies Chronicles, and Infinite Warfare are also discounted at a handful of stores.

Call of Duty: WWII is getting strong reviews, with GameSpot scoring it a 9/10. It returns to the franchise's origins in World War II, beginning with a D-Day mission. Some of the actors featured in the game include Josh Duhamel from Transformers and Kingdom's Jonathan Tucker. And in multiplayer, that means no more super-powers or exosuits, but instead boots-on-the-ground only. The game also includes a Nazi Zombies mode that we quite enjoyed, along with a brand-new, larger-scale multiplayer experience called War.

PS4 Pro Discounted To $350 At GameStop And Walmart Right Now For Black Friday 2017

By Kallie Plagge on Nov 24, 2017 05:20 pm

Black Friday 2017 is right around the corner, and we've gotten a look at the deals many retailers will offer this year. And while it initially seemed like there wouldn't be any deals for Sony's 4K-capable PlayStation 4 Pro, GameStop's ad has revealed it will be on sale for $350. The deal is available right now. [Update: Walmart is all offering the same $350 price.]

This is your best bet for getting a PS4 Pro at a discount this year. Your only other options are the regular $400 retail price at other stores or $450 for the special-edition Destiny 2 and Star Wars Battlefront II models, barring any surprise offers we haven't seen yet.

If you're not sure whether you should make the jump to the Pro, you can read our full PS4 Pro review. Author Jimmy Thang writes, "If you have a 4K HDR TV and are looking to buy a console, I'd definitely recommend the PS4 Pro. Even if you have a 1080p TV and are looking to buy a PlayStation, I'd still lean more toward the Pro. Yes, it does cost $100 more than the Slim model, but you get more ports, twice the storage space, more future-proof hardware in the event that you ever decide to get a 4K TV, and some games can look slightly better at 1080p."

For a complete roundup, see our full list of PS4 Black Friday deals. There are sure to be even more deals to come, while others may be unlisted for the time being, so check back with us in the lead up to Black Friday. For more, check out retailer-specific deals breakdowns through the links below.

Game Black Friday 2017 UK Deals: All The PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, 3DS Games On Sale At Game

By Oscar Dayus on Nov 24, 2017 05:19 pm

Black Friday 2017 is upon us, so UK retailers have their cheap game deals. If you're in the US, check out all the PS4 Black Friday deals or a bunch of Xbox One Black Friday deals; otherwise, scroll down to see Game's Black Friday UK deals--including games and accessories for PS4, Xbox One, Switch, Wii U, and more going cheap--all in one place.

First up, there's some good deals on PS4 consoles, including one that bundles together a 500 GB PS4 Slim and copies of FIFA 18, Gran Turismo Sport, and Knowledge is Power for £200. Then there's a 1 TB PS4 Pro bundle that comes with FIFA 18, GT Sport, and a 2 month Now TV entertainment pass for £200.

Game is also offering the Gran Turismo Sport / Skyrim for PS4 and PSVR bundle (with a Now TV pass and RIGS thrown in for good measure) for £250. Other PS4 games on sale include Star Wars Battlefront or FIFA 17 (both pre-owned) for £5, Horizon Zero Dawn (also pre-owned) for £20, and F1 2017 for £38.

When it comes to Xbox One console deals, there are a couple of options. The company is offering £20 off the Xbox One X, while an Xbox One S bundle that gets you Rocket League, Forza Motorsport 7, and a 2 month Now TV entertainment pass is down to £180. You can also remove Forza from that to save another £10, and pick from other games if you're not fussed about Rocket League: Minecraft, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Forza Horizon 3, and Assassin's Creed Origins are all available to choose from in the £170 deal.

Xbox One game deals, meanwhile, include Ark: Survival Evolved for £40, Divinity: Original Sin for £10, and Dirt 4 for £23. You can also grab Overwatch: Game of the Year Edition for £25 or Destiny 2 for £30 on Xbox One or PS4. Many of these PS4 and Xbox One deals are available for the same price on the other platform, too, so be sure to double check all the prices on Game's website.

Finally, Nintendo Switch deals were looking good, but many of them have now sold out. Game was offering a Nintendo Switch console bundle--including the device itself plus Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle--for £280, but that and another that included Super Mario Odyssey are both now out of stock. However, it seems other bundles including identical items for slightly more money are indeed in stock. Check out Game's website for up-to-date availability. In terms of cheap Switch games, The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ is down to £30, while LA Noire is £33 and Rayman Legends is £25.

Below, you'll find a list of all the best deals Game has on sale; we'll update this post as necessary as Black Friday goes on. Remember there's more included in Game's sale, and to check there for up-to-date prices and stock checks. For much more, check out all of our Black Friday coverage through these links:

By Tamoor Hussain on Nov 24, 2017 05:17 pm

Like every other retailer and video game publisher out there, Blizzard is hosting a sale for Black Friday 2017 and offering discounts on all of its most popular games. Whether you've got your eyes on newer titles like Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm, or older releases such as World of Warcraft, there's a price discount worth considering. Those that want to grab some apparel from the Blizzard Gear Store will also be able to get some money off. These discounts will last until November 27.

Newegg Black Friday 2017 Deals: Consoles, Video Cards, Gaming Monitors, And PC Hardware On Sale Now

By Michael Higham on Nov 24, 2017 05:17 pm

Newegg has launched its Black Friday sale that'll be going on until Saturday night (November 25, 11:59pm PT). Over 3,000 items are part of the sale which range from video cards and processors to game consoles and headsets. With so much stuff discounted, we wanted to highlight some of the standouts. Take note that some of these items will sell out and temporarily be out of stock as the Black Friday sale goes on.

First thing to highlight are video cards. With their recent fluctuation in price, it's hard to find good deals, but a few sales on cards are worth considering. You can get your hands on an EVGA GTX 1060 (3GB, single-fan) for just $180, the Zotac Mini GTX 1060 (6GB) for $240 or a MSI GTX 1060 (6GB) for $250. For those set on AMD cards, look to the Sapphire Nitro+ RX 570 at $210 or the MSI Gaming X RX 580 at $240, both of which have 4GB of VRAM. At the high end, Gigabyte's GTX 1080 at $500 tends to be a good deal considering that card's MSRP is $550.

Great deals are abound for processors and AMD fans should be hyped up to upgrade. The quad-core Ryzen 5 1500X is only $165 and the eight-core Ryzen 7 1700 is at $270. Overclockers might want to look to the Ryzen 7 1800X that's just $320. Those that want to build or upgrade a workstation PC should look at the 16-core Ryzen Threadripper 1950X for $800. Intel users on the Z170/Z270 chipset can get the best consumer-level CPU in the Core i7-7700K for $290.

Memory is the third key component to a gaming PC and while prices have remained relatively high, a few good sales standout. G.Skill is offering 8GB Ripjaws V DDR4 RAM for $70 and dual-channel 8GB Ripjaws V DDR4 RAM for $75. Those on an older platform can look to 8GB of Patriot Viper DDR3 RAM priced at $51. For higher capacity, look to 16GB of ADATA XPG DDR4 RAM at $137; and if you want to get fancy, 16GB G.Skill TridentZ RGB DDR4 RAM for $160 should be on your radar.

You can't forget about storage drives in a gaming PC. Solid-state drives are highly recommended these days, and you can get a 120GB Patriot Burst SSD for $40, a 500GB Samsung 850 Evo SSD for $150, or a 1TB Crucial MX300 SSD for $238. If you need higher volume storage, the 5TB Toshiba X300 HDD is $120, 6TB WD Black HDD is $200, and the huge 12TB Seagate BarraCuda Pro is $460 (all three run at 7200 RPM).

Plenty of sales on monitors are live, and cheaper ones like the Acer GN276HL (27-inch, 144Hz, 1080p) for $190 or the BenQ GW2765HT (27-inch, IPS, 1440p) for $230 are both great deals. The LG 27MU58 (4K, FreeSync) at $300 is the best value for a 4K monitor at the moment. Curved monitors are also available for cheap: the LG 29UM69G (29-inch, FreeSync, IPS, 21:9, 1080p) is $200, MSI Optix G27C2 (27-inch, 144Hz, 1080p) is $230, and the Samsung C32H711 (32-inch, FreeSync, 1440p) is $400. If you want to ball out, the Asus ROG PG348Q (34-inch, IPS, 100Hz, 21:9, G-Sync, 1440p) has all the specs you could ask for at $920. Be sure to check out our full roundup of all the best deals on 4K, 1440p, and 1080p monitors for Black Friday.

If you don't want to go through the hassle of piecing a PC together, plenty of great pre-built gaming PCs are also available. Every rig here comes with Windows 10 Home (64-bit) installed as well. At the low-end, CyberpowerPC's Game Master 2009 (Ryzen 5 1400, 8GB RAM, GTX 1050) can be snagged for $590. For a step up, look to the CyberpowerPC Game Master 2021 (Ryzen 7 1700X, 8GB RAM, GTX 1060) for $800 or the iBuyPower NE770RAi (Core i7-7700, 8GB RAM, GTX 1060) for $900. If you can shell out the big bucks for a high-end rig, look to the ABS GT1 (Core i7-7700, 16GB RAM, GTX 1070) for $1200 or the CyberpowerPC Xtreme S780 (Core i7-7700, 16GB RAM, GTX 1080) for $1300.

PC gamers on the go can check out the following laptops: MSI GL62M 7RDX 15.6-inch (Core i5-7300HQ, 8GB RAM, GTX 1050) at $600, MSI GS Stealth Pro 15.6-inch (Core i7-6700HQ, 16GB RAM, GTX 1060) at $1050, or Asus ROG G752VS 17.3-inch 120Hz G-Sync (Core i7-7820HK, 16GB RAM, GTX 1070) at $1780.

When it comes to peripherals, a handful of gaming headsets, keyboards, and mice jump out. The Plantronics Gamecom 318 for $13 and Rosewill Nebula GX10 for $19 are super cheap options. The HyperX Cloud Revolver is highly regarded and is priced at $90. The wireless SteelSeries Siberia P800 7.1 headset is going for $180. For straight-up headphones, the Philips SHP9500S provide great sound quality for just $48.

Cheap gaming keyboards like the Nixeus MODA v2 (non-Cherry Brown switch) for $40, the tenkeyless Corsair Vengeance K65 for $50, the Logitech RGB G410 for $50, and the G.Skill RGB KM570 for $80 are all deals worth looking at. The G.Skill Ripjaws MX780 mouse and Nixeus Revel mouse (with a mouse pad) are both $30.

Console gamers shouldn't feel left out as Newegg has a few bundles and accessories on sale. The PlayStation 4 Slim (1TB) goes for $200 and the PlayStation 4 Pro (1TB) is $400. Many Xbox One S bundles are available, like the 500GB Xbox One S with Forza Horizon 3 (and Hot Wheels DLC) for $230 or with Battlefield 1 and an extra controller for $250. A 1TB Xbox One S with Assassin's Creed Origins and Rainbow Six Siege or with Battlefield 1 Special Edition goes for $300. PlayStation VR goes for $200 and all colors of DualShock 4 controllers are $40.

We summarized all our highlights in a list below. There are so many PC components, accessories, peripherals, and displays on sale at Newegg, so be sure to seek out specific items you're looking for on their site. Newegg isn't the only place to look when it comes to gaming hardware; check out our extensive coverage for all things Black Friday:

EA's Black Friday 2017 Deals: All The PC Games On Sale At Origin

By Eddie Makuch on Nov 24, 2017 05:15 pm

Origin, the PC storefront operated by Electronic Arts, has launched a Black Friday sale. Quite a few games are on sale, including titles published by EA and other companies. EA-published games on sale include Battlefield 1, FIFA 18, Need for Speed: Payback, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Titanfall 2, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, and Dragon Age: Inquisition.

A range of games from other publishers are on sale, too, including The Lego Movie Video Game, Watch Dogs 2, This War of Mine, Far Cry 4, The Division, Farming Simulator 17, Inside, and The Witcher: Wild Hunt. Go to Origin's website here to see all of the deals and find out what they cost in your local currency. The sale ends at 10 AM PT on November 28.

The American metal band Origin, which was formed in the late '90s--many, many years before EA launched its Origin platform in 2011--has also kicked off a Black Friday sale. You can see a full rundown of the band's discounted items here on their label's website. To date, EA has not partnered with the band Origin, which seems like a missed opportunity.

Black Friday itself is right around the corner; you can check out GameSpot's in-depth coverage of all the notable deals through the links below. Other big PC game sales includes those on Steam, the Humble Store, Ubisoft Store, and GOG.

Black Friday 2017 Video Game Deals

Assassin's Creed Origins, South Park Fractured But Whole, And Other Black Friday 2017 Deals In Ubisoft PC Game Sale

By Chris Pereira on Nov 24, 2017 05:13 pm

Not content to just let retailers provide discounts on its own products, Ubisoft has launched its own Black Friday sale ahead of the big shopping day. In addition to dropping the price of many of the publisher's newest PC games, you'll also find deals on its older games and a variety of merchandise themed around those games, ranging from South Park figurines to Assassin's Creed clothing.

On the game side, even Ubisoft's most recent releases are on sale for PC. South Park: The Fractured But Whole and Assassin's Creed Origins are $40 each, both of which launched just last month. A variety of versions of Rainbow Six Siege are discounted, the cheapest of which gets you the base game for $20. For Honor drops to $24, while Ghost Recon: Wildlands drops to $30. Other deals of note include Star Trek: Bridge Crew for $30 and Watch Dogs 2 for $16.

As for merchandise, you can pick up a South Park: Fractured But Whole figurine of Mysterion for $40 (down from $50) or a Coon tricycle for $60 (from $80). A Wildlands backpack can be had for $30 (from $60), Rainbow Six Siege figurines are $15 each (from $20), and an Assassin's Creed canvas backpack is $48 (from $60).

These prices are available from now until November 26; you can see everything on sale here. At least in the case of the games, you may want to do some comparison shopping--there haven't been a ton of deals on PC games announced so far, although GOG and the Humble Store have both launched their respective Black Friday sales. Steam is expected to do the same on November 22. You can check out all of our Black Friday coverage through the links below.

Micro Center Black Friday 2017 PC Hardware Deals: SSDs, CPUs, PSUs, Monitors, And More On Sale

By Michael Higham on Nov 24, 2017 05:13 pm

It seems that Black Friday starts earlier and earlier each year and PC hardware vendor Micro Center is joining the festivities. While not every deal is worth jumping on, there are definitely some standout sales. Micro Center is also a brick-and-mortar store, but for your convenience, we're highlighting the deals that are available for shipping. This includes solid-state drives, hard drives, pre-built PCs, power supplies, monitors, and peripherals.

In terms of gaming mice, you can pick up the Logitech's Pro G for $50 or G502 Proteus Spectrum RGB mouse for $60. Logitech has wireless peripherals available for cheap, like the MK270 wireless keyboard and mouse combo for $20, the K400 wireless keyboard with a touchpad for $20, and the MK550 Wave wireless combo for $60. Micro Center does offer peripherals from Razer, but aren't part of Black Friday savings.

If you're looking for high capacity storage or faster drives, there are plenty of options. For SSDs, the 240GB Kingston A400 is currently $80 and the 240GB Inland Professional SSD is $70. Spacious SSDs like Crucial's MX300 1TB option is going for $280 and the Western Digital Blue 500GB can be snagged for $150. For pure storage space, Toshiba has you covered with its N300 hard drives with either 4TB ($130), 6TB ($200), or 8TB ($250), all of which are 7200 RPM. If you don't need that much space and don't mind slower speeds, Seagate's 3TB 5900 RPM IronWolf is on sale for $90 and the 2TB 5400RPM Barracuda for notebooks for $70.

A range of pre-built PCs are on sale, from the low-spec to the high-end. So if you're not building your own, you have options. The Acer Aspire with an Intel Core i5-7400, 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB hard drive is going for $400, but you will have to get your own video card since this system runs on integrated graphics. Another cheap low-end system, CyberPower Gamer Ultra, is currently $500; it comes with an AMD FX-6300 CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive, and an RX 550 video card. As for the high-end option that we can recommend, the PowerSpec G428 that's on sale fore $1700 comes everything you'd want in a gaming PC: an Intel Core i7-7700K CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 500GB SSD, 2TB hard drive, and the beefy GTX 1080 Ti video card.

When it comes to power supplies, EVGA's SuperNOVA 750-watt 80 Plus Gold PSU is going for $120 ($100 after an additional rebate), the Corsair's 80 Plus Bronze CX650M 650-watt PSU is $70 ($50 after a rebate) and CX750M 750-watt PSU is $82. The fully modular Corsair RMX750 80 Plus Gold PSU can be had for $121.

Lastly, it's a good time to pick up a cheap monitor. The ASUS MG248QR 24-inch 1080p 144Hz monitor is one of the best deals available here at just $200. If you prefer more screen space over high-refresh rate, then the Acer K272HL 1080p 27-inch monitor for $120 should be on your radar. Say you want to go even cheaper, the AOC E2429SWHE 23.6-inch 1080p monitor is just $100 now. For more on monitors, check out our roundup of the best 4K, 1440p, and 1080p monitors for Black Friday.

Since there are brick-and-mortar locations and exclusive in-store deals, we wanted highlight these sales in case you live near a Micro Center. The high-end Intel Core i7-7700K CPU is at $260, while the Core i5-7600K is $180. For AMD, the Ryzen 5 1600 is going for $170, Ryzen 7 1700 is at $250, and the Ryzen 7 1800X is $330. The PowerSpec G314 pre-built PC sports an Intel Core i5-7600K, GTX 1070 video card, 16GB of RAM, and a 480GB SSD, all for $1000; you'd be hard-pressed to build a PC for cheaper with the same specs. An AMD Ryzen equivalent in the PowerSpec G700 has similar specs but is equipped with the Ryzen 7 1700 8-core CPU for $1080. There are plenty of gaming PCs and laptops with different specs that are priced accordingly, so be sure to check out the rest of the deals if you can make to a Micro Center location.

2017 Best Buy Black Friday Tech Deals: All The TV Shows, Movies, And 4K TVs On Sale

By Mat Elfring on Nov 24, 2017 05:11 pm

Black Friday is upon us, and that means a ton of deals on everything you could want. As expected, retailers have released their deals ahead of the big day, like Best Buy. With the doors opening at 5 PM on Thanksgiving evening--in some states--the retailer is offering up some big deals for TVs, movies, and more.

As far as TVs go, Best Buy has a 50-inch Sharp LED 4K television with Roku for $179.99. Normally, the television costs $500 and is currently on sale for $400 on the retailer's website. In addition, you can get a 60-inch LED 4K TV from Sony for $600, which currently costs $1,000. There is also some pretty decent deals on 4K players, with the most notable being the LG 4K player for $100. It's worth noting that most of the TVs sold on Black Friday aren't of the highest quality, so it may not be the best choice for your 4K gaming. You can check out television reviews on our sister site CNET to see if these deals are right for you.

If you're looking to add to your movie collection, the retailer has a ton of movies on sale, many of which come with a digital copy as well. The most notable of the bunch is The Princess Bride on Blu-Ray for $2. In addition, you can get some of the latest home releases on 4K for $10-15. Best Buy also has movie collections listed, but the retailer does not have the Black Friday prices listed.

Those who are eager to start shopping early can take advantage of a pre-Black Friday sale that is already underway. While the discounts are not as steep, in addition to the games that are on sale right now, there are sales on TVs, gaming PCs, streaming devices, home theater equipment, and a variety of movies and TV shows. That latter category includes a handful of 4K discs, including the Harry Potter Collection for $150, Westworld: The Complete First Season for $50, and Mad Max: High Octane Collection for $105. You can see the deals that are live here.

A wide variety of deals are actually live right now; if you're a My Best Buy Elite or Elite Plus member, you can purchase Best Buy's doorbusters deals online here. Games, TVs, movies, and more are available without having to actually wait for Black Friday.

Below, you'll find a list of Black Friday deals in TVs, movies, and tech that we think might be up your alley. You can check out the complete listing of deals on Best Buy's website. Black Friday 2017 Deal: Get A PS4 Pro Destiny 2 Bundle Now For $350 At Amazon

By Oscar Dayus on Nov 24, 2017 05:02 pm

Black Friday 2017 has offered a number of PS4 deals and cheap Xbox consoles and games, and now there's another to add to the pile. Amazon is offering a PS4 Pro Destiny 2 bundle for $350 in the US right now.

Currently, this is your best bet for getting a PS4 Pro at a discount. Your only other options are the regular $400 retail price at other stores or $450 for the same bundle as Amazon but with Star Wars Battlefront II included. GameStop's ad did reveal the store will selling the console for $350 on Black Friday itself, but as far as we know that is without a game included. In the UK, meanwhile, Sony has officially discounted PS4 Pro consoles for Black Friday. Until the end of Monday, November 27, PS4 Pro bundles containing Call of Duty: WWII and either FIFA 18 or Gran Turismo Sport will cost £300. Check out the Amazon US deal here.

If you're not sure whether you should make the jump to the Pro, you can read our full PS4 Pro review. Author Jimmy Thang said, "If you have a 4K HDR TV and are looking to buy a console, I'd definitely recommend the PS4 Pro.

By Chris Pereira on Nov 24, 2017 05:00 pm

As with the Xbox Store, Sony has kicked off an early sale on the PlayStation Store ahead of Black Friday 2017. The sale was initially only available to PlayStation Plus members, but it has expanded to everyone and features even more games on discount. If you're a PS4 owner, there are some notable deals here. [Update: Beginning today, November 21, the PSN Black Friday sale is now open to non-PS Plus subscribers as well. In addition to that, many new PS4 game discounts are now available in the PlayStation Store. We've updated the list below with some of the most notable ones. Be sure to also check out the UK's own PlayStation Store Black Friday sale on PS4 games.]

This PSN Black Friday Early Access sale focuses exclusively on a selection of games for PS4--this isn't as extensive as the hundreds of games in the Xbox Store Black Friday sale. As with that one, many of these prices are not as cheap as what you'll find at physical retailers--you can find a full rundown on all the PS4 Black Friday game deals in our roundup. But if you prefer the convenience of digital, you will be able to save up to 40% off these games' usual prices.

A number of new releases are on sale, including Assassin's Creed Origins for $42, Call of Duty: WWII Deluxe Edition for $90, Destiny 2 for $39 (or $67.49 with the season pass, ahead of Curse of Osiris's upcoming release), NBA 2K18 for $42, Need for Speed Payback for $36, South Park: The Fractured But Whole for $42, and WWE 2K18 for $36. We don't yet know what other games will be added on Tuesday, but you might be able to get a general sense by checking out the aforementioned Xbox Live sale.

Below, you'll find a list of many of the PlayStation Store deals that are currently available, or you can see them on the PlayStation Store website. We've updated this list with more deals after the full sale went live, which features a much more extensive array of titles, including some for PS3 and Vita. If you want to see everything on sale in terms of hardware, physical games, and accessories, check out our PS4 Black Friday 2017 deals roundup. Those include a notable omission from the games below--Middle-earth: Shadow of War is $36, but only for Xbox Live Gold members.]

As you'd expect, the bulk of the offers are available on Xbox One, where you'll find hundreds of games discounted. There's also a ton of DLC on sale, but for our comprehensive list, we've focused on games, special editions, bundles, and season passes, rather than individual DLC packs. In many cases, these prices aren't the best ones available this Black Friday; physical copies are often cheaper, as you can see in our roundup of all the Xbox One Black Friday 2017 game deals. But if you're looking for the convenience of digital games, the premium may be worth it.

Among the games on sale are some very recent releases. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is $30, South Park: The Fractured But Whole is $40, Assassin's Creed Origins is $42, Need for Speed Payback is $36, The Evil Within 2 is $30, NBA 2K18 is $42, and WWE 2K18 is $36. Additionally, numerous Xbox 360 games are on sale, many of which can be played on Xbox One through backwards compatibility. Those include Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for $5, Bully: Scholarship Edition for $7.49, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas for $5 each, and Red Dead Redemption for $10. Across the board, you'll want to double check on pricing before jumping on a deal due to some oddities--for instance, The Witcher 3 for $20 looks good, but due to it seeing a larger discount, The Witcher 3: Complete Edition (which includes the game's DLC expansions) is also $20.

Below, you'll find our comprehensive list of all the Xbox One games, bundles, and season passes on sale. We've also included a limited selection of Xbox 360 games that support backwards compatibility on Xbox One. The full list is available on the Xbox website.
