By Anonymous on Jun 15, 2015 11:46 pm At E3 today, Konami released a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. The epic, six-minute video was edited and directed by Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima. Watch the video below and let us know what you think in the comments. The Phantom Pain launches worldwide on September 1 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. According to sources, Kojima will leave Konami when the game ships. We recently played a portion of The Phantom Pain; you can read our impressions here. By Anonymous on Jun 15, 2015 11:43 pm At the Xbox press conference, Crystal Dynamics showed a new gameplay demo of Rise of the Tomb Raider. The sequel to the 2013 reboot of the action adventure game, Rise of the Tomb Raider takes Lara to the snowy mountains of Russia in search of some ancient ruins. The trailer opened with Lara advancing through an icy cave, equipped with her now-signature climbing axe, while also sporting cold-weather gear. As she leaves the cave and advances up a mountain, some of the new environment's hazards came into play. Lara trudged slowly through deep snow, and icicles fell as she climbed up a craggy wall. Some familiar platforming elements were shown in the new snowy environment, as Lara shimmied along a narrow platform, climbed with her climbing axe, and leapt across bridges. This platforming disturbed the environment, and an avalanche initiated a scripted sequence that forced Lara to run for her life. She slid down ramps and ziplines, but is eventually knocked unconscious. This is what I'm interesting in playing in Rise of the Tomb Raider: the parts of the game where I'm alone, low and resources, and there are dangerous creatures lurking just out of sight.
This section of the demo didn't show much new in the way of gameplay, but the new mountainous environment looked spectacular. After Lara regained consciousness, some short new clips showed scenes that were much more intriguing. We saw Lara crafting her signature bow and arrow, as well her being taken to and subsequently breaking out of prison, then pushing a minecart to solve a puzzle, as well as a brand new underwater swimming section. The demo ended with Lara facing off against a bear, so it seems like her new environment will bring with it new dangers. This is what I'm interesting in playing in Rise of the Tomb Raider: the parts of the game where I'm alone, low and resourceless, and there are dangerous creatures lurking just out of sight. It was hard to tell from the scripted platforming sequence if the sequel's environmental exploration will feel more puzzle-like than its predecessor, but that will be key to making me engage with them more this time around. Overall, Rise of the Tomb Raider's showing was typical for that of a press conference: loud, flashy, impressive on a surface level, but lacking greater detail for fans of the rebooted series. Rise of the Tomb Raider's release date was also announced at the Xbox press conference, and the game continues to be an Xbox One exclusive for the holiday 2015 period. By Anonymous on Jun 15, 2015 11:40 pm Check out the world premiere demo for Gears 4 at the Microsoft press conference from E3 2015. By Anonymous on Jun 15, 2015 11:40 pm Microsoft today revealed a brand-new Gears of War, Gears of War 4, that is coming to Xbox One during holiday 2016. The game was shown off using the first-ever gameplay footage, which feature two seemingly brand-new characters. A number of elements from previous Gears appear to be returning, including gun-mounted chainsaws and the style of sprinting seeing in previous games. The demo moved from an outdoor environment where a storm was hitting to an indoor area with very limited lighting. The two characters--one a woman, and one a man whose perspective the demo was shown from--then began fighting a variety of monsters that don't appear to be resemble those seen in past games. In the process, we get to see the Gnasher Shotgun, Lancer, and the chainsaw all used. While the game undoubtedly looked much better than any past Gears title, there didn't appear to be much new on display; the core gameplay seems largely unchanged, at least based on what we saw this morning. While it's somewhat disappointing that any new elements Gears 4 offers weren't featured in the video, we are still roughly a year and a half away from its launch. In other words, there isn't necessarily any reason for Gears fans hoping for some new wrinkles to panic. By Anonymous on Jun 15, 2015 11:33 pm Xbox development head Kudo Tsunoda has announced that the corporation is "working closely with Valve" to ensure that Windows 10 will be an ideal platform for Valve's Vive headset. Though he wouldn't offer specific details, Tsunoda's announcement of a Valve partnership closely follows the Windows 10 deal with Oculus VR. Retail models of Oculus Rift will ship with an Xbox One controller, with the software fully supported on Windows 10. Meanwhile, Oculus Rift will be able to play Xbox One games via a Wi-Fi streaming service. It is suspected, though not confirmed, that Valve's Vive headset could offer the same function. Microsoft has gone from relative obscurity in the world of VR, to becoming a central player in the sector, in a matter of days.
There is no confirmed release date for the Vive headset, though Valve has already begun speaking to developers about shipping developer models. By Anonymous on Jun 15, 2015 11:25 pm During Microsoft's 2015 E3 Press Conference, Mojang's Director of Fun, Lydia Winters, announced that Minecraft will be supported by Micorsoft's Hololens headset out of the box, both as a projected display and as an augmented reality version of the game. During the presentation, Mojang presented a holographic demo of Minecraft that was projected on top of a coffee table. Using the Hololens, the player can watch worlds rise and fall in virtual 3D, right in front of their eyes. Other Minecraft players will be able to interact with Hololens players and their worlds, making this a valuable addition to the Minecraft universe, rather than just a Hololens exclusive version of the game. Last month, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella noted to The New York Times that when Microsoft purchased Mojang back in September, that it was in part due to the potential benefits of marrying Minecraft and Hololens. "Let's have a game that, in fact, will fundamentally help us change new categories," Nadella said. "HoloLens was very much in the works [when Microsoft announced the deal last year], and we knew it." CNET's Nick Stat experienced a demo of the Hololens version of Minecraft back in January, reporting that "the demo turns an entire room into a lively game world, punching holes into tables and through the walls to reveal interactive environments that can be changed with the tap of a finger." By Anonymous on Jun 15, 2015 10:13 am The Bethesda E3 2015 press conference started out with the first public showing of the new Doom game, and it was a substantial series of trailers and demos. It's gruesome, violent, and chaotic.
By Anonymous on Jun 15, 2015 03:28 am The Impressive Sense of Scope
Fallout 4's creators have stated that "player freedom is the absolute number one goal," and from early looks at the game, it looks like they've accomplished that. When a character a emerges from Vault 111 to take in the desolated landscape of a ruined Boston, the sense of scale is awe-inspiring. (Photo by: Bethesda) This Amazing Real Life Pip-Boy
The Fallout 4 Special Edition includes this incredible, real-life Pip-Boy replica. It's not only a to-scale re-creation, but also a housing for your phone. Your phone displays an app linked to the game's Pip-Boy. You can adjust your weapons and armor on the fly while completely immersing yourself in the apocalyptic future. (Photo by: Bethesda) That Lovable Dog Companion
Scouring the wacky wasteland on your own is no fun. So Bethesda has provided a canine companion. Players can even give the cute little guy commands, like, "Retrieve a wrench from that radioactive dump." Fingers crossed the dog doesn't die in some dark, twisted tragedy. (Please don't die. Please don't die.) (Photo by: Bethesda) The Dynamic Character Creation Options
Fallout 3 was a great game, but no matter how long gamers spent in its character creator, the on-screen avatar looked like a mutant cave dweller. Thankfully, it looks like Bethesda's souped up the character customization, with a cool interactive scene between a husband and a wife. Players can even end up with someone easy on the eyes this time around. (Photo by: Bethesda) This Giant Freakin' Train on Fire
Plot details are still scarce for this new game, but whatever's happening with this flaming bullet train careening off its tracks in the latest trailer ... it's sure to be epic. (Photo by: Bethesda) This Devious Weapon Design System
Fallout games can be a bit overwhelming, given the piles of useless junk lying around. But now, it looks like players can will finally be able to put all that stuff to great use. The new workbench allows for a gigantic variety of Frankenstein-esque weapon mashups we can't wait to wield. The Glamorous Wardrobe
It wouldn't be a Fallout game without a fabulous closet of stunning evening wear to stroll around in. There's nothing better than slaying mutants while dressed to the nines. That Snarky Fallout Humor
Fallout has a proud tradition of gallows humor, and it looks like Fallout 4 carries the torch forward into the future. It's a welcome relief when juxtaposed with the merciless and harsh climate. The Grotesque Gore
We didn't explicitly see a "Bloody Mess" perk for Fallout 4 yet, but based on the glimpses of combat on display, it looks like the franchise's signature ultra-violence is back, along with the V.A.T.S. targeting system. Lock onto a limb and fire! The Added Fun of Extreme Makeover: Wasteland Edition
Probably the coolest new feature in Fallout 4 is the home creation system. Players can rip apart buildings for scrap and use the material to build their own mansions out of rusted steel. With elaborate electrical grids and raider defense systems, we're likely looking at hours of post-apocalyptic home improvements. The Radioactive Critters
There's nothing worse than getting ambushed by a hideous creature when taking a lovely stroll along a burned-out field. Between mutant brahmin and gigantic bloodbugs, players will have their hands full fending off Fallout's fiends. The Fact That Codsworth Actually Knows Your Name
Ever-faithful robot servant Codsworth will actually pronounce a player's name audibly, thanks to his stored databank of more 1,000 popular names. The Story That Begins in an Idyllic America
While Fallout 3 began in media res, Fallout 4 offers a glimpse of the world that was lost before a nuclear catastrophe. The main character begins with a happy family living in a quasi-futuristic suburb when disaster strikes. This unique setup suggests the story will have several direct ties to the past as it develops. The Retro Mini Games
It looks like the in-game Pip-Boy has a host of new features. With a layered armor system and retro mini games, like the Donkey Kong inspired title above, it looks like Fallout 4 has made surfing the menus as fun as possible. The Cool Custom Armor Creation
Donning power armor is a rite of passage in any Fallout game, and the newest installment has a range of new customizations, specific to each section of the character's body. Time to stomp the mole rats back to the stone age! The Unique Boston Setting
We've already rampaged through the wreckages of Washington, D.C., and Vegas in past Fallout games. Now it's time for the cradle of liberty to get a mutated makeover. The concept art and still images from the post-nuclear Boston landscape look fascinating. These Giant Flyable War Machines
In the grand tradition of anarchic open-world games, the vault refugee can hijack a helicopter and rain destruction upon enemy factions. An overhead view of the destitute world might just give us shivers. The Cool Fallout Shelter Mobile Game
Bethesda clearly had fans in mind during its press conference: The company announced a free tie-in Fallout game for mobile. And it's available right now. A fun blend of sim and strategy games like XCOM and FTL, Fallout Shelter is a must-download to tide over fans until the full Fallout 4 releases on November 10th, 2015. The Mod Scene is Coming to Xbox One
Bethesda announced at the Microsoft press conference that Fallout 4 on the Xbox One will have access to any of the player-created mods on the PC version of Fallout 4. Finally, console players won't be left out of the cool mod scene that has made drastic improvements to games like Fallout 3 and Skyrim!
