Rise of the Tomb Raider Shows How To Survive An Avalance At E3 2015

By Daniel Hindes on Jun 15, 2015 11:43 pm

At the Xbox press conference, Crystal Dynamics showed a new gameplay demo of Rise of the Tomb Raider. The sequel to the 2013 reboot of the action adventure game, Rise of the Tomb Raider takes Lara to the snowy mountains of Russia in search of some ancient ruins.

The trailer opened with Lara advancing through an icy cave, equipped with her now-signature climbing axe, while also sporting cold-weather gear. As she leaves the cave and advances up a mountain, some of the new environment's hazards came into play. Lara trudged slowly through deep snow, and icicles fell as she climbed up a craggy wall.

Some familiar platforming elements were shown in the new snowy environment, as Lara shimmied along a narrow platform, climbed with her climbing axe, and leapt across bridges. This platforming disturbed the environment, and an avalanche initiated a scripted sequence that forced Lara to run for her life. She slid down ramps and ziplines, but is eventually knocked unconscious.

This is what I'm interesting in playing in Rise of the Tomb Raider: the parts of the game where I'm alone, low and resources, and there are dangerous creatures lurking just out of sight.

This section of the demo didn't show much new in the way of gameplay, but the new mountainous environment looked spectacular. After Lara regained consciousness, some short new clips showed scenes that were much more intriguing. We saw Lara crafting her signature bow and arrow, as well her being taken to and subsequently breaking out of prison, then pushing a minecart to solve a puzzle, as well as a brand new underwater swimming section. The demo ended with Lara facing off against a bear, so it seems like her new environment will bring with it new dangers.

This is what I'm interesting in playing in Rise of the Tomb Raider: the parts of the game where I'm alone, low and resourceless, and there are dangerous creatures lurking just out of sight. It was hard to tell from the scripted platforming sequence if the sequel's environmental exploration will feel more puzzle-like than its predecessor, but that will be key to making me engage with them more this time around. Overall, Rise of the Tomb Raider's showing was typical for that of a press conference: loud, flashy, impressive on a surface level, but lacking greater detail for fans of the rebooted series.

Rise of the Tomb Raider's release date was also announced at the Xbox press conference, and the game continues to be an Xbox One exclusive for the holiday 2015 period.

Gears of War 4 Coming Holiday 2016, Microsoft Announces at E3 2015

By Chris Pereira on Jun 15, 2015 11:40 pm

Microsoft today revealed a brand-new Gears of War, Gears of War 4, that is coming to Xbox One during holiday 2016.

The game was shown off using the first-ever gameplay footage, which feature two seemingly brand-new characters. A number of elements from previous Gears appear to be returning, including gun-mounted chainsaws and the style of sprinting seeing in previous games.

The demo moved from an outdoor environment where a storm was hitting to an indoor area with very limited lighting. The two characters--one a woman, and one a man whose perspective the demo was shown from--then began fighting a variety of monsters that don't appear to be resemble those seen in past games. In the process, we get to see the Gnasher Shotgun, Lancer, and the chainsaw all used.

While the game undoubtedly looked much better than any past Gears title, there didn't appear to be much new on display; the core gameplay seems largely unchanged, at least based on what we saw this morning. While it's somewhat disappointing that any new elements Gears 4 offers weren't featured in the video, we are still roughly a year and a half away from its launch. In other words, there isn't necessarily any reason for Gears fans hoping for some new wrinkles to panic.

Microsoft Announces Valve VR Partnership at E3 2015

By Rob Crossley on Jun 15, 2015 11:33 pm

Xbox development head Kudo Tsunoda has announced that the corporation is "working closely with Valve" to ensure that Windows 10 will be an ideal platform for Valve's Vive headset.

Though he wouldn't offer specific details, Tsunoda's announcement of a Valve partnership closely follows the Windows 10 deal with Oculus VR. Retail models of Oculus Rift will ship with an Xbox One controller, with the software fully supported on Windows 10.

Meanwhile, Oculus Rift will be able to play Xbox One games via a Wi-Fi streaming service. It is suspected, though not confirmed, that Valve's Vive headset could offer the same function.

Microsoft has gone from relative obscurity in the world of VR, to becoming a central player in the sector, in a matter of days.

There is no confirmed release date for the Vive headset, though Valve has already begun speaking to developers about shipping developer models.

Minecraft Confirmed for Microsoft's Hololens Headset

By Peter Brown on Jun 15, 2015 11:25 pm

During Microsoft's 2015 E3 Press Conference, Mojang's Director of Fun, Lydia Winters, announced that Minecraft will be supported by Micorsoft's Hololens headset out of the box, both as a projected display and as an augmented reality version of the game.

During the presentation, Mojang presented a holographic demo of Minecraft that was projected on top of a coffee table. Using the Hololens, the player can watch worlds rise and fall in virtual 3D, right in front of their eyes. Other Minecraft players will be able to interact with Hololens players and their worlds, making this a valuable addition to the Minecraft universe, rather than just a Hololens exclusive version of the game.

Last month, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella noted to The New York Times that when Microsoft purchased Mojang back in September, that it was in part due to the potential benefits of marrying Minecraft and Hololens. "Let's have a game that, in fact, will fundamentally help us change new categories," Nadella said. "HoloLens was very much in the works [when Microsoft announced the deal last year], and we knew it."

CNET's Nick Stat experienced a demo of the Hololens version of Minecraft back in January, reporting that "the demo turns an entire room into a lively game world, punching holes into tables and through the walls to reveal interactive environments that can be changed with the tap of a finger."

Microsoft Premieres Dark Souls 3 on E3 2015 Stage

By Array on Jun 15, 2015 11:23 pm

Microsoft premiered Dark Souls 3 on its E3 2015 press conference stage by showing a short teaser of the game will arrive in early 2016.

The trailer showed an expectedly dark, gothic world, a crown, and a terrifyingly large enemy towering above everything else.

It feels like a similar setup for Souls fan, a new kingdom that has crumbled, a mysterious monarch, and lots of monsters.

Rumours of a Dark Souls 3 E3 reveal surfaced in early June, with reports that Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne mastermind Miyazaki was heading up the project.

Miyazaki served in a supervisory capacity on Dark Souls 2, with Yui Tanimura and Tomohiro Shibuya co-directing the game.

At the time, reports of Miyazaki's involvement seemed to clash with Sony Computer Entertainment's World Wide Studios' Shuhei Yoshida confirmation that a Bloodborne DLC expansion pack is in development.

Prior to the official announcement of a new Dark Souls, it was unclear whether Miyazaki would be involved with the Bloodborne expansion. Or if, as the rumour suggested, he had moved on to a new project.

As of yet, Miyazaki's involvement has not yet been clarified. The Dark Souls 3 trailer shown at Microsoft's E3 press conference did not mention Miyazaki, or say something to the effect of "from the creator of the original Dark Souls."

1080p/60fps Gears of War Ultimate Edition for Xbox One Confirmed at E3

By Eddie Makuch on Jun 15, 2015 11:21 pm

At Microsoft's press conference today, the company revealed a remastered version of the 2006 original Gears of War. Dubbed the Ultimate Edition, the new version of the game comes with improved graphics, as it runs at 1080p/60fps, producer Rod Fergusson said on stage at Microsoft's briefing.

Starting later today, Xbox One owners with an Xbox Live Gold subscription can play a beta for the game.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is also working on a brand new Gears of War game called Gears 4. That game is in development at Black Tusk The Coalition.

The announcement of Gears of War Ultimate Edition confirms what months of leaks have suggested. In October 2014, Xbox head Phil Spencer sparked hopes of a remake when he retweeted a comment about a "Marcus Fenix Collection." In March, The Coalition denied a remade collection, but teased Gears of War news to come. In April, Gears of War HD footage leaked, all but confirming the remaster.

What do you think of a Gears of War remaster? Let us know in the comments.

Rare Replay Collection Announced at E3 2015, Will Have 30 Games, 10,000 Gamerscore

By Tamoor Hussain on Jun 15, 2015 11:16 pm

Microsoft has announced it will be publishing Rare Replay for Xbox One, a package that brings together 30 of the studio's best games in one place.

The game was announced at Microsoft's E3 press conference, where a $30 price was also confirmed along with an August 4 release date.

Among the list of games included in Rare Replay are Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Viva Pinata, Perfect Dark, Blast Corps, Battletoads, and Killer Instinct.

In total, Rare Replay will have 10,000 Gamerscore.

Rare's last release was 2014's Kinect Sports Rivals and little had been heard about the studio's next project until now.

In January 2015 the studio indicated it had something significant in the pipeline for this year. Veteran Rare composer, Robin Beanland, took to Twitter and said, "This is a huge year" for the studio.

The previous year, in November 2014, Xbox exec Phil Spencer suggested that the studio was working something a little more in touch with its roots, as opposed to another Kinect title.

"Got to play the new Rare game today," Spencer said. "Rare building a uniquely Rare game, as it should be. Great visit to the studio."

Microsoft's comments saying it doesn't want Rare to be considered only a Kinect Sports studio added further weight to this speculation.

Though it wasn't clear whether it was related to Rare's teases, Microsoft renewed its trademark for Battletoads around the same time, suggesting--but not confirming--that the company was at work on a revival of the long-dormant series created by Rare and released for the NES in 1991.

Rare also announced an all-new game, Sea of Thieves.

Microsoft Announces the August Beta for Gigantic at E3 2015

By Miguel Concepcion on Jun 15, 2015 11:15 pm

Gigantic, published by Microsoft and developed by Motiga, will open its beta to Xbox One and Steam users on August 2015.

The game's brief highlight video showcased much combat classes and characters. These include Imani the ranged warrior, the heavy known as The Margrave, Voden the archer, and the staff-wielding Charnok. This free-to-play game gets its name from the giant guardians who serve as companions to the squad. Not dissimilar from the vibrant and colorful art direction of other arena shooters like Overwatch and Battleborn, Gigantic looks to have the brightest visuals out of this upcoming wave of so-called Hero Shooters.

Gigantic will be available for Xbox One and Windows 10.

Microsoft Flaunts Exclusive Indie Support at E3 2015

By Rob Crossley on Jun 15, 2015 11:06 pm

Microsoft has showcased the growing level of indie developer support for the Xbox One, with an E3 2015 presentation that outlined a quartet of indie titles coming first to the console.

In a move that echoed Sony's famous "indie 8" demonstration during E3 2013, Microsoft sent out Chris Charla, head of the ID@Xbox initiative, to introduce four key independent titles coming to the system.

First, Steve Gaynor of the acclaimed Gone Home developer Fullbright, revealed the studio's next project--Tacoma--will be a timed Xbox One exclusive.

Then Derek Bradley, of Aurora44, showed off a game called Ashen, which appears to be a exploration survival adventure. Following this was Sherida Halatoe, of Tiger & Squid, who revealed Beyond Eyes, which appears to resemble a watercolour version of The Unfinished Swan.

Finally, Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, of Canadian studio MDHR, revealed their idiosyncratic Xbox One exclusive Cuphead, which is set for release in 2016.

Charla said these four titles were emblematic of "the breadth of experiences coming to Xbox One today."

Other games shown during the ID@Xbox showcase include Shine, Mean Greens, Flame in Blood, Phantasmal, The Solus, Project, Westerado, Sword Coast Legends, Outward, Behemoth's Game 4, Below, Ark, Recruits, and SuperHot.

Rise of the Tomb Raider Release Date Announced at E3 2015

By Chris Pereira on Jun 15, 2015 11:06 pm

During its E3 press briefing today, Microsoft revealed a release date for Rise of the Tomb Raider: November 10, 2015.

Rise of the Tomb Raider was first announced at last year's E3, when it was said to be coming holiday 2015. Microsoft is publishing the game, which is a timed exclusive--meaning it could come to PCs and/or PlayStation systems in the future. Currently, it's only slated for release on Xbox One and Xbox 360.

This is a direct sequel to the 2013 reboot, Tomb Raider, went has sold in excess of 8.5 million copies.

Xbox One Early Access Programme Announced at E3 2015, Launches Today

By Tamoor Hussain on Jun 15, 2015 11:03 pm

Microsoft has announced Xbox Game Preview, a programme that will allow users to trial and buy games that are still in-development.

Xbox Game Preview functions very much like the Steam Early Access programme, but instead of buying an unfinished product up-front, Xbox One owners will be able to play a trial, then decide if they want to commit.

ID@Xbox's Chris Charla said "every game has a free trial," which means players can "make an educated decision" on whether they want to buy it in an early stage or wait for the finish product.

A select number of games will join the program over the next year, with titles including Shelter and DayZ on the way.

However, Xbox Game Preview launches today with Hinterland's The Long Dark and Elite: Dangerous will be available to trial and purchase today.

This announcement was made at Microsoft's E3 press conference, where, the company also confirmed backwards Xbox 360 compatibility for box One.

DayZ Creator Reveals New IP "Ion" at E3 2015, Coming First to Xbox One and PC

By Eddie Makuch on Jun 15, 2015 10:57 pm

During Microsoft's E3 2015 briefing today, DayZ creator Dean Hall appeared on stage to reveal his next game, which is called Ion, and is in development at his new studio, RocketWerkz.

Hall described Ion as "not a game," but more of a universe that's defined by physics, biology, and chemistry. Official details are light at the moment, but you can watch its debut trailer below.

Ion is coming first to Xbox One and PC--that wording suggests it could be released on PlayStation 4, too, but this has not been confirmed.

The game will be playable on Xbox One before it's even done through Microsoft's just-announced Xbox Game Preview program. This is an Early Access-style initiative where users can play Xbox One games before they are finished to provide feedback to developers.

Hall quit DayZ developer Bohemia Interactive at the end of 2014.

In other words, you'll still be able to play both games on Xbox One without buying Siege, provided you have 360 copies of them.

Halo 5 Guardians Kicks Off Microsoft's E3 2015 Press Conference

By Miguel Concepcion on Jun 15, 2015 10:37 pm

Microsoft's E3 2015 press conference started sensibly enough, with the franchise that put Xbox on the map: Halo.

While no major plot reveals were made, the new gameplay trailer further conveyed the likelihood that Halo 5: Guardians will be a significant character departure not seen since Halo: Reach, a game that didn't even feature Master Chief at all.

Led by Spartan Locke, his squad (with the acting and facial capture of Nathan Fillion) is in search of Master Chief, who has since gone missing in action. Set in a stronghold littered with an injured Covenant, the gameplay clip implied that the once main villain of the franchise is in the midst of their twilight years. The five-minute gameplay footage had all the trademarks of Halo: the assertiveness of a shotgun, new weapons like a beam crossbow, the reappearance of the Prometheans, and a brief escape sequence from a collapsing environment. The emphasis on a squad without Master Chief was effective in connecting this campaign mode with the much talked about Halo 5 Guardians multiplayer.

The presentation wrapped up with the reveal of Halo 5 Warzone, a highly customizable multiplayer platform that pits up to 24 players head-to-head, as well as against AI bots. Expect levels larger than your average Halo map.

Halo 5: Guardians is set for release on October 27, 2015. Check out all the news that happened at the Microsoft conference right here.

Bethesda has confirmed the Fallout 4 release date is November 10. Get up-to-date on Fallout 4, Doom, Dishonored 2, and more with our in-depth Bethesda press conference news round-up.

Fallout 4 Xbox One Lets You Play PC Mods, Bethesda Reveals at E3 2015

By Chris Pereira on Jun 15, 2015 10:29 pm

During Microsoft's E3 press conference today, Fallout 4 director Todd Howard came on stage to announce that Xbox One players will be able to play mods made for the game on PC. These mods will be available for free.

This news comes following last night's showcase of the game. Howard's announcement was preceded by a gameplay demonstration that showed some similar footage from Bethesda's E3 press conference last night, as well as new footage.

We saw a mix of combat (both first-person and VATS, including a look at a "signature weapon," the laser musket), exploration, and the game's new dialogue system. We also saw power armor in action, which--combined with a heavy duty minigun--was used to rip enemies to shreds.

Xbox One to be Backward Compatible with Xbox 360 Games, Microsoft Reveals at E3 2015

By Rob Crossley on Jun 15, 2015 10:28 pm

Microsoft revealed on Monday at E3 2015 a grand plan to allow all Xbox 360 games to play on Xbox One via software emulation.

Digital Xbox 360 titles already purchased via XBLA, as well as retail discs of last-gen titles, will eventually be "natively" playable on Xbox One, the company claimed.

Microsoft executive Mike Ybarra explained that about 100 Xbox 360 titles will be playable on Xbox One by "this holiday", with hundreds more expected to follow. Among the first wave will be the Mass Effect trilogy, Super Meat Boy, Halo Reach, and Perfect Dark Zero.

At Microsoft's end, all this will be made possible via a painstaking software emulation initiative.

Ybarra also confirmed that some games could look better when displayed on Xbox One, and in an apparent dig at Sony's PlayStation Now subscription service, said that "we at Microsoft won't charge you to play the games you already own".

System-wide Xbox One features, such as DVR and streaming, will be available on all Xbox 360 titles.

Mega Man Creator and Metroid Prime Devs Announce Xbox One Exclusive at E3 2015

By Tamoor Hussain on Jun 15, 2015 10:25 pm

Microsoft has announced Recore, a brand new Xbox One exclusive from Mega Man creator and former Capcom legend Keiji Inafune.

The title, which is published by Microsoft's Game Studios, is also being developed by Compcept and Metroid Prime devs at Armature Studios, which previously released Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate.

A trailer for Recore was shown during Microsoft's E3 press conference. In it, a female character is seen traversing a desolate desert, hiding from a sandstorm, and eventually reaching the doors of a vault.

The unnamed character is joined by a robot dog. The duo are ambushed by spider-like automatons, who have their cores torn out using a grappling hook. As the core is removed, the spiders crumble. The idea of souls being contained seems to be at the centre of Recore.

Moments later, the robotic canine companion self-destructs to destroy a group of enemies. Its glowing blue core is left behind, but this is placed into another nearby robot, which comes to life.

"Welcome back buddy," says the female character. Recore has been given a release date in Spring 2016.

E3 2015: Walking Dead's Badass Female Getting New Telltale Game

By Alex Newhouse on Jun 15, 2015 09:57 pm

Telltale Games has announced its next installment in The Walking Dead adventure franchise. Called The Walking Dead: Michonne, it is a three-part mini-series that centers around the character named Michonne.

This mini-series focuses on the story of Michonne which unfolded during The Walking Dead comic. According to a blog post on the Telltale website, the game "stars the iconic character from the comic book series haunted by her past and coping with unimaginable loss and regret."

The developer states that it chose Michonne because of her character traits and a desire to bring the comic book closer to the game. Creator Robert Kirkman explains, "In many ways, Michonne herself is a reflection of the world of The Walking Dead. She is brutal and cold on the outside, but deep beneath what is broken, she remains hopeful, trying to claw her way out of the darkness that surrounds her."

This is the latest entry in a series that started in 2012. Since then, two series and one other miniseries have launched. They have been very popular, and the first season won several Game of the Year awards from different outlets.

The Walking Dead: Michonne launches this fall for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and mobile devices. Importantly, the developer notes that you'll need to own at least the first episode of The Walking Dead: Season 2 to be able to play this mini-series.

Keep an eye on GameSpot for all news about Telltale's game series that comes out of E3 this week.
