The Dallas Cowboys, one of the most famous teams in the NFL, are trying something new to train their quarterbacks. The team has signed a two-year deal with a startup called StriVR Labs to use their virtual reality technology to train the team's quarterbacks, which would presumably include Tony Romo.
According to Re/code, "After donning the headset, players see a live-action 3D video replay of a football play from the quarterback's perspective, and can review that play from a first-person view over and over, looking in any direction."
The current iteration of StriVR's headset is not interactive, the site points out. But as it stands, coaches can test a quarterback's decision-making skills, while another benefit is that players can "practice" without the entire team.
StriVR was developed by former Stanford kicker Derek Belch. The technology is used at Stanford, and also at a variety of other colleges. The Dallas Cowboys become the first pro team to use the technology. They have not won a Super Bowl since 1996.
That's the tagline from a new teaser video released today for the next Plants vs. Zombies game, which is expected to be a sequel to last year's wacky, team-based shooter Garden Warfare.
The teaser video below also reveals that the "exclusive worldwide reveal" of this new game will be made during Microsoft's Xbox briefing at E3 next week, on Monday, June 15.
The new Plants vs. Zombies game was announced during an Electronic Arts earnings presentation back in May. "After Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare became a sensation last year with console players young and old, we'll be returning to the Plants vs. Zombies universe with a bigger and bolder new console experience," EA CEO Andrew Wilson said at the time.
The game is scheduled to launch during EA's fourth fiscal quarter, which translates to the period running January 1-March 31, 2016. The game is coming to PC and console, though a full list of platforms have not been announced.
The original Garden Warfare was released first on Xbox 360 and Xbox One, before later shipping for PC and PlayStation consoles. GameSpot scored the game a 7/10.
"While the unlockables fit right in with the whimsical spirit of the Plants vs. Zombies franchise, you're left feeling like Garden Warfare needed a little something more to make it a meal rather than a side salad," reviewer Carolyn Petit wrote. "Still, it's that rare shooter whose world and characters might put a smile on your face, making it a refreshing entry in a genre that usually takes itself really seriously."
What would you like to see from a Garden Warfare sequel? Let us know in the comments below.
From YouTube channel Corridor Digital comes "Real GTA," which is definitely one of the best Grand Theft Auto V-related videos we've ever seen.
Everything from character movement style to camera angles and more is faithfully captured. The gunfights and bike stunts obviously are not real, but it all flows together very nicely and is quite impressive.
This isn't the first real-world recreation of GTA V, but its attention to detail (including real-world Los Angeles area landmarks) makes it stand out.
What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
Capcom on Monday announced Mega Man Legacy Collection, an upcoming game that includes "faithful reproductions" of the original six Mega Man games. The collection also comes with a new challenge mode and a collection of images, concept art, and other assets from the iconic franchise's history.
The game, which will be available only as a download, launches this summer for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, with a release for the Nintendo 3DS to follow this winter.
Mega Man Collection's new challenge mode "remixes gameplay segments from all six games." Capcom also says that difficulty is scalable, meaning the game should appeal to both veterans and newcomers alike.
Capcom's other big announcement today was the confirmation of its E3 plans. The Japanese publisher isn't holding a marquee briefing like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, but the company will have a booth on the E3 show floor. Games including Mega Man Collection, Resident Evil 0 HD, and Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition will be playable.
In addition, Street Fighter V will make its first appearance at a major event at E3 next week. There will be a tournament stage and "interactive" photo opportunities.
E3 2015 kicks off this coming Sunday and runs through the following week. GameSpot will be on the ground in Los Angeles, bringing you all the news from the show as it's announced.
The crowdfunding campaign for Castlevania mastermind Koji Igarashi's Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night continues to grow, with the game expanding to new platforms. Now that funding has passed $3.5 million, the gothic platformer will be released on another platform, Sony's PlayStation Vita.
The news was announced through an update to the game's Kickstarter page. It explains that digital and physical copies will be available, along with cross-save support with the PlayStation 4 edition. We've also now learned that the PS Vita's touch screen will be used, at least in part, for the game's map.
PS Vita becomes Bloodstained's fifth platform, joining PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U. Armature Studio, which was founded by Metroid developers, will work on the PS Vita edition.
The Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, which originally asked for $500,000, closes in four days on June 12. There are still more stretch goals that could be met, including orchestrated music tracks ($3.75 million), an online challenge mode ($4 million), and a third playable character ($4.25 million), among others.
Igarashi, who quit Konami last year, produced more than a dozen Castlevania titles, beginning with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in 1997. He is known for transforming the series into a more adventure-oriented direction known as "Metroidvania." Igarshi is calling Bloodstained "Igavania."
"While we would love to share with you how well The Order: 1886 has performed since it release, those are numbers that only Sony can divulge," he said in a new interview with Game Informer.
"Suffice it to say, we are very proud of that game, and we are well on our way to achieving the sales performance that we sought," he added.
However, Sams did not share what that sales target was.
The Order: 1886 drummed up a fair amount of controversy over its debatable duration. GameSpot scored the game a 5/10. Reviewer Kevin VanOrd wrote, "The Order: 1886 is boring collection of game cliches that betrays its fascinating premise."
Ready at Dawn, an independent developer based in Irvine, California, also announced today that it has hired Sams as its new CEO. Sams previously worked at World of Warcraft developer Blizzard Entertainment for two decades. Ru Weerasuriya, the studio's co-founder and former CEO, will shift into the role of president and chief creative officer.
Alongside the hiring of Sams, Ready at Dawn has also opened a new "business hub" in Austin, Texas.
"It is never easy finding someone to take over the reins of a company after this many years, but I cannot think of anyone better suited to guide the team as we look to the future," Weerasuriya said about Sams in a statement. "He is one of the most accomplished, respected, and experienced leaders in our industry."
We're so used to seeing the people in charge of making decisions at the video game companies in business mode that we forget that--some of them--are also huge gamers.
We're not saying they all are, some of them are very obviously not. But for every [redacted] there's a Shuehei Yoshida. Sony's president of worldwide studios has made himself a man of the people with an affable demeanour and frequent name-dropping of games he likes.
Now, for those that needed further proof of Yoshida's skills as a video game player, watch the video below. In it, the PlayStation exec better known as Yosp takes on a Bloodborne boss like an absolute pro.
Admittedly, Bloodborne--as some obnoxious Souls fans are quick to remind people--isn't as difficult as previous From Software titles, but Yoshida's behaviours show he's a seasoned player.
The way he dances around the enemy to bait out opening, makes calculated dodges, and picks his moments to attack reveals that he's an old hand at Souls. It's impressive.
An expansion to Bloodborne was confirmed by Yoshida in May. He also confirmed that more information on the expansion would be released "later this year."
Team Meat co-founder Tommy Refenes says in a post on the PlayStation Blog that the developer was previously prohibited from bringing Super Meat Boy to PlayStation 3 for "very complicated reasons."
Those "reasons," most likely some kind of exclusivity arrangement with Microsoft, have now been worked out such that Team Meat can bring Super Meat Boy to PlayStation consoles.
"We actually never ever EVER thought this day would come and it makes us both so happy that it's finally here! We know this has been a long time coming but better late than never," Refenes said.
Super Meat Boy will be free for PlayStation Plus subscribers when it's released later this year. "That's our way of saying, 'Thank you for waiting patiently' to all those PlayStation fans...," Refenes said.
For what it's worth, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said that an Xbox One version of Super Meat Boy "would be great."
The development of Super Meat Boy was a central storyline in 2010's documentary, Indie Game: The Movie. For a closer look at the new PlayStation version of Super Meat Boy, check out some images in the gallery below.
Released two years ago in March 2013, Sega's endless runner Sonic Dash, based on the company's iconic series Sonic the Hedgehog, has now reached 100 million downloads.
To mark the milestone, Sega has released a new infographic that covers some massive statistics about the game. For example, Sonic has run 1.1 billion miles in-game, players have collected 850 billion gold rings, and have spent a cumulative 14,000 years playing the game.
With over 100 million downloads, Sonic Dash becomes the most downloaded Sonic game in history. But of course, it's a free-to-play game.
Sonic Dash is available now as a free download across iTunes, Google Play, and Windows Phone. Being a free-to-play game, Sonic Dash relies on microtransactions to make money. Sega has not provided any details, however, regarding the profitability of Sonic Dash.
It may be popular, but Sonic Dash is still nowhere near Angry Birds or Temple Run, both of which have exceeded 1 billion downloads to date.
Sonic Dash was developed by Sega's internal mobile studio Hardlight.
The briefing will begin at 7:40 AM PDT / 10:40 AM EDT on Sunday, June 14. "You definitely don't want to miss it," Nintendo wrote in its announcement today.
All of this new Super Smash Bros. DLC will go on sale June 14, starting at 8 AM PDT / 11 AM EDT. This means the Nintendo video event will immediately precede the release of the new DLC.
Bandai Namco-published open-word RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has taken the top spot on the UK sales chart for the third consecutive week, according to sales monitor Chart-Track.
Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V, meanwhile, moved up one spot from last week to No.2. The game, which has been on the chart for a total of 90 weeks, has not been outside of the top five in the all formats chart since its release.
EA's FIFA 15 moved up one spot to No.3, while Nintendo's Splatoon moved down two places to No.4.
The only other new entry in the top 40 is Stiens:Gate for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, which debuted at No.18.
Here's the full top ten for the week ending June 6:
"Where the Witcher 2 sputtered to a halt, The Witcher 3 is always in a crescendo, crafting battle scenarios that constantly one-up the last, until you reach the explosive finale and recover in the glow of the game's quiet denouement," said our reviewer.
"But while the grand clashes are captivating, it is the moments between conflicts, when you drink with the local clans and bask in a trobairitz's song, that are truly inspiring."
Check out the video below to go on a virtual tour of the mod, but be aware that this is a work-in-progress. The flat textures and other oddities are likely to be improved and tweaked in the future.
But these early results seem promising.
This map is not yet ready to download because it's not finished, YouTuber taltigolt (maker of excellent mods) says in the video's description.
Rockstar Games released Vice City for mobile devices back in 2012. The game is available now on iTunes and Google Play for $5.
Rovio's Angry Birds franchise is the latest to get its own line of LEGO toys.
The Finnish game developer and The LEGO Group on Monday announced a partnership for a new line of physical LEGO toys based on the bird-flinging strategy game series. The first of the toy sets will debut in spring 2016 alongside the full-length Angry Birds movie.
According to Rovio, Angry Birds is the "most downloaded mobile game ever." Back in 2012, it reached an incredible 1 billion downloads.
Unfortunately, neither Rovio nor LEGO shared any images of the Angry Birds LEGO sets. But LEGO executive Jill Wilfert did tease that the Angry Birds LEGO toys will, as you might expect, riff on the "deconstruction" nature of the games.
"Our designers are having fun developing building sets that leverage the engaging play and deconstruction found in the Angry Birds game," she said in a statement.
Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider publisher Square Enix has announced its next game, and it may not be what you expect.
As reported by Siliconera, Figureheads is a mech-themed, 5v5 free-to-play strategy shooter. Little is known about its actual gameplay, but Square Enix calls it a "robot x shooter x strategy game."
The game is launching later this year for PC, and Square Enix teases that some kind of further announcement about Figureheads will be made on June 10.
The game has been confirmed so far only for Japan; there is no word yet on a western release.
For now, you can watch a new Figureheads video below, which does feature some gameplay. Does Figureheads look like something you might want to play? Let us know in the comments below.
Microsoft has released a new Xbox One system update. Normally, that's an exciting event, as new features or functionality are delivered to the console. But this one is somewhat different.
The new Xbox One update out now does not introduce new features, but instead offers mysterious behind-the-scenes tweaks to "prepare for the future."
Check out some tweets below about the new Xbox One update from Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb and Xbox partner director Mike Ybarra.
The timing of the update is potentially interesting, as E3--the biggest news event of the year for games--is right around the corner. We've already heard about a new, 1TB Xbox One model, but could a new dashboard update also be in the works?
We don't know, but all will be revealed at Microsoft's E3 briefing, which is scheduled for Monday, June 15, starting at 9:30 AM PDT / 12:30 PM EDT.
For those asking, we released a small update today. No features. Just behind the scenes stuff. #xbox
German filmmaker Uwe Boll, perhaps best know by gamers for his various video game movie adaptations, is not a fan of crowdfunding. In an expletive-laden, NSFW video rant posted Sunday, Boll lashed out at platforms like Indiegogo and Kickstarter--and even George Clooney and Brad Pitt for some reason.
"That was my third campaign after Postal 2 failed...And now Kickstarter failed, too," he starts off in the video, which of course is titled "F**k you all."
"Basically my message is, 'F**k yourself,'" he says.
Boll went on to use strong, controversial language (which we will not repeat here) about the people who run Kickstarter and other crowdfunding sites. He said the folks at Kickstarter contacted him, asking if he would launch a crowdfunding effort for Rampage 3. But Boll seems to suggest that Kickstarter team was really more interested in collecting their fee.
"It's all f**king bullsh**, and I will never do it in my life again," Boll said. "For me, crowdfunding is absolutely dead. Goodbye. End. It looks like nobody gives a sh** about Rampage 3, so maybe I shouldn't do it, then."
"I have enough money to play golf 'till I'm dead."
Boll went on to say that he didn't expect to make any real money on Rampage 3; instead, he wanted to make it because he thought it was an "important" movie.
This rant was followed by another, wider (and again, very much NSFW) tirade where Boll attacks the Hollywood industry in general. He specifically cites his movie about the genocide in Darfur as not getting the attention it deserved. He goes on to claim that celebrities like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and George Clooney only do charity work when it benefits their own personal brands.
Despite Boll's pessimism, Rampage 3 could still happen...maybe. The movie still has three more days to meet its €50,000 ($55,800) goal. At press time, funding stands at €22,757 ($25,400).
Ahead of Microsoft's E3 briefing, which takes place one week from today, new screenshots and details for first-party racing game Forza Motorsport 6 have leaked.
Discovered by IGN, the official Japanese Xbox website posted--and then removed--some information about Forza 6. First up, the game will reportedly have a collection of over 450 cars. The game also pledges to deliver "breathtaking graphics," with three new screenshots posted to the site.
The images show off Forza 6's rain effects and nighttime driving, among other things. See them all at IGN.
What's more, the leak says Forza 6 will offer two-player splitscreen, in addition to 24-player online races and Drivatar support. There are also 26 "world-famous" locations featured in the game, supposedly.
With just one week to go before Square Enix's E3 briefing, the publisher is now starting to talk about what it will show during its presentation. It's not much of a surprise, but Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will play a part in the event, as Square Enix will offer a first look at in-game footage, the company said on Twitter.
Runs on the Dawn Engine, which is Eidos Montreal's proprietary game engine.
Will feature Direct X 12 support as well as AMD's TressFX as a means to "not only raise the bar in game performance but bring unrivaled visual fidelity to the Deus Ex franchise."
Takes place in 2029, and continues the story of Adam Jensen from Human Revolution.
Welcome back to GameSpot Q&A a weekly section where we ask our staff and readers an interesting discussion question about video games. Look at this as a forum where you and others can discuss and compare your opinions of this beloved hobby of ours. Let us know what your answer is to this week's question in the comments below!
This week's question is:
What game series do you wish a specific developer/team could work on?
Our favorite games are our favorite for a reason, a great development put together something memorable. But just like movies in a series will get different directors and a long-running book series might have multiple authors, what if a new studio could work on your favorite franchise? Whether it's mashing up genres in exciting ways or just breathing new life into a series we already love to explore, here are the game series and developers that we think would go together like peanut butter and chocolate.
Bethesda Meets Vampires | Zorine Te
I would love to see Bethesda Game Studios revive the Vampire games from the World of Darkness universe--particularly in the style of Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. That universe is incredibly rich with lore, and in the right hands the story and gameplay could be incredibly brilliant. Bethesda has experience in marrying narrative with gameplay in a style I'm quite fond of, so I think that studio would be best suited to it. Please, give me another Vampire: The Masquerade Game!
Streets of Rage by Rocksteady | Rob Crossley
Streets of Rage 2 is still, hands-down, the greatest scrolling beat 'em up of all time. Everything the game attempted was a triumph--the thugs, the music, the motorbikes, the insanely hard elevator levels, the buff Muay Thai mini-bosses, the metal pipes, the fire-breathing fat guys; everything. And while SEGA has attempted twice before to build a modern reboot of the 16-Bit classic, the original's magic seems lost when converted into 3D. Who could solve such a conundrum? Look no further than Batman Arkham developer Rocksteady, which has singlehandedly changed the rules of how combat works in 3D.
Naughty Dog Does James Bond | Eddie Makuch
I would really like to see Naughty Dog work on a James Bond game. Uncharted has proven that the developer clearly has the chops to pull off a high-octane action adventure that doesn't take itself too seriously. That's essentially the Bond formula. Plus, Sony Pictures is behind the Bond movies and Sony also owns Naughty Dog.
Up Plus Insomniac | Mary Kish
I think Insomniac Games should make a platform game series similar to Spyro, but focused on Dug the dog from the movie Up. It would be adorable.
Arkane and the Thief | Daniel Hindes
I would like to see Dishonored developer Arkane make a Thief game. The developer has consistently proven they know how to create an engaging, first-person stealth/combat game, but I'd love to see what they could do if they were focusing on stealth specifically, as in the Thief series.
Metro: Last Light Dev and Half-Life | Kevin VanOrd
I would love to see what Metro 2033/Last Light developer 4A Games would do with a Half-Life game. Half-Life 2 is already immersed in a Ukrainian/Eastern-European milieu that recalls the post-Chernobyl dereliction and reticence of the region, and depicts an excellent futuristic version of Soviet propaganda materials and policies. 4A works with the same kinds of themes, and is already doing God's work in the single-player shooter realm. If we gave them the keys to the Half-Life kingdom, perhaps Half-Life 3 would actually be made...and be outstanding.
Nintendo and Metroid | Peter Brown
I would love to see Nintendo make a new Metroid game. I get it, this is a chance for me to come up with a dream team scenario, but the only game I really want to see announced in the near future is Metroid, and I only want it to come from a studio underneath the Nintendo umbrella. Come on E3, don't disappoint me! [Editor's Note: Since Peter didn't follow the rules, I'm going to choose a developer for him...HAL Labratories (the Kirby team), would make a super cute, "chibi" version of Samus and Metroid. The plot would focus on winning a competitive eating contest set on the Planet Zebes. You're welcome, Peter! -- JH]
Firaxis and Front Mission | Edmond Tran
I want a team at Firaxis, led by Jake Solomon, to take the reins of a new Front Mission. Front Mission 3 is one the greatest turn-based strategy games ever made. It had a gripping political thriller narrative, deep tactical battles, and you could punch dudes in a big robot suit. The series crashed and burned through the 00's, but after a masterful XCOM reboot, Firaxis can easily bring Front Mission back to its former glory. Do it, Square Enix!
Bioware and Battlestar | Lucy James
I'd love for BioWare to tackle Battlestar Galactica. I mean, it would be kind of similar (okay, VERY similar) to Mass Effect, but Battlestar is so full of politics, intrigue, romance and action that I think it'd make a killer third-person title. Also, dogfighting in space.
Firaxis in Star Control | Ty Root
Easy. I'd love Firaxis to take on the Star Control series, even though I know Stardock supposedly has the rights to the Toys 4 Bob/Accolade classic (and is potentially going to bring back the series in 2017).
Machine Games Meets Mass Effect | Chris Watters
I want a first-person shooter in the Mass Effect universe designed by those aces at MachineGames. The Swedes behind the excellent action and warm characterization in Wolfenstein: The New Order would capitalize on the rich fiction to build intriguing relationships and create a shooter with soul (that also kicks a lot of ass).
