With Super Mario Odyssey's release coming up later this month, the Nintendo Switch's library of games is set to grow with another notable title. But there's already no shortage of great games to play, particularly on the Eshop. Switch ships with only 32 GB of storage, and just 25.9 GB of that is actually usable. Whether you've already run out of space or are worried about doing so in the future, now is as good of a time as any to add some additional storage.
Among Amazon's daily deals is one featuring SanDisk memory that includes both flash drives and microSD cards, which Nintendo supports. We recommended some of these memory cards for Switch back when the system first launched, and today's deal provides up to 25% off what was already a cheaply priced set of cards. At the low end, you can get an extra 32 GB for only $11, while 64 GB is just $18. Those seeking even larger options can pick up a 128 GB card for $37, 200 GB for $63, or 256 GB for $100.
These prices are available for today only; they expire at 12 AM PT / 3 AM ET on October 17 and do not require an Amazon Prime membership. Take note these are UHS-I cards, which are not the fastest ones available, but we found the difference between these and UHS-3 cards to be negligible.
The DC Super Hero blockbuster Wonder Woman is out now on 4K UHD, Blu-ray™ 3D, Blu-ray™ and DVD. To celebrate, we've teamed up with Warner Bros. to offer you the chance to win one of three bundles, including a copy of the movie on Blu-ray™, a poster, key chain, and mug.
Wonder Woman saw huge success when it hit cinemas this summer, smashing the box office records. Director Patty Jenkins brought the classic DC hero to screens with Gal Gadot in the lead role, and Chris Pine supporting as Steve Trevor. If you've not seen the film, you're missing out. Here's the synopsis:
Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

The next weekly reset for Destiny 2 is approaching. While it marks the end of the current Nightfall, Flashpoint, and so on, it will also wrap up the game's first-ever Iron Banner event.
Ahead of the reset at 2 AM PT / 5 AM ET / 10 AM BST / 8 PM AEDT on Tuesday, October 17, you still have a chance to take part in Iron Banner matches. The limited-time Crucible mode is 4v4 like all other PvP activities in Destiny 2 and features Quickplay modes and matchmaking. If you don't already have access, you can check out our guide on how to get into Iron Banner. Things play out differently than in the first Destiny.
Completing Iron Banner matches--win or lose--nets you event-specific Tokens, which can be turned in with Lord Saladin at the Tower. That allows you to get your hands on a variety of new item rewards. You can see all of the Iron Banner weapons, gear, and armor in our gallery, but don't expect to collect it all. While that is possible, rewards are random, meaning you can open dozens of rewards packages without necessarily getting what you want.
The next pair of Pokemon games, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, are quickly approaching their November 17 release date, and ahead of their launch, Nintendo has been giving away a ton of free items and Pokemon for the previous Sun and Moon versions. Many of the giveaways have already ended, but there are still plenty of rare freebies for Sun and Moon players to get their hands on.
We've rounded up all of the distributions that are currently running for Pokemon Sun and Moon, as well as a few that will be available for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon when those versions launch. We'll be updating this list as more giveaways are announced, so check back often to see what free items and Pokemon you can get.
Pokemon Sun/Moon Free Gifts
Mega Stones -- Ends Oct. 31
Mega Stones are exceptionally rare and valuable in Pokemon Sun and Moon. When equipped to their corresponding Pokemon, Mega Stones allow it to Mega Evolve during battle, often changing its type and giving it a considerable stat boost. Nintendo is giving away several batches of Mega Stones that aren't normally available in Sun and Moon, all of which are redeemable via a universal download code. Input the following codes in Mystery Gift by October 31 and you'll receive these Mega Stones:
Players in the US can pick up a free download code for Charizard from the electronics department in Target stores. The popular Fire-type Pokemon comes at level 50, is equipped with the Red Card item, and knows the moves Dragon Dance, Flare Blitz, Fly, and Earthquake. As with other download codes, you need to input your code via Mystery Gift to receive Charizard. The distribution runs until October 14, and you have until February 4, 2018 to redeem your code.
Marshadow -- Ends Oct. 23
For a very limited time, players can pick up a free download code for the Mythical Pokemon Marshadow. Those in the US can get the code from GameStop, while players in the UK will have to visit "participating retailers." This is the first legitimate way Sun and Moon players can obtain the rare Fighting/Ghost-type, which comes at level 50 and is equipped with Marshadium Z. It also knows the attacks Spectral Thief, Close Combat, Force Palm, and Shadow Ball.
Pikachu
To celebrate the release of the Pokemon series' 20th anniversary film, Pokemon The Movie: I Choose You, The Pokemon Company is giving away six different versions of Ash's Pikachu for Sun and Moon. To receive a Pikachu, enter the code PIKACHU20 in Mystery Gift. However, you can only receive one of the six Pikachu, and the version you get depends on when you enter the code. The full Pikachu distribution schedule is below.
Players who purchase either Pokemon Gold or Silver from the 3DS Eshop by September 21, 2018 will receive a bonus download code for the Mythical Pokemon Celebi. The code can be redeemed in Pokemon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, or Ultra Moon. We've outlined the steps you need to take to find and redeem the code here.
Magearna
Unlike other Mythical Pokemon, the Steel/Fairy-type Magearna is available not through Mystery Gift, but via a QR code. After defeating the Elite Four and completing the main story, you can use the QR Scanner feature to scan the below code. After doing so, visit the Antiques shop in Hau'oli City and pick your Magearna up from the deliveryman waiting there. The Mythical Pokemon comes at level 50 and knows the moves Fleur Cannon, Flash Cannon, Lucky Chant, and Helping Hand.
Shiny Silvally -- Ends Nov. 13
Beginning October 23, players in the US and Canada can pick up a free download code for a shiny Silvally from GameStop and EB Games stores. The distribution will run until November 13. Players in the UK will also have a chance to get the rare Pokemon at participating GAME stores from November 3-16.
Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon Free Gifts
Rockruff -- Ends Jan. 10, 2018
Purchase either Pokemon Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon by January 10 and you'll receive a special Rockruff as a free bonus. This Rockruff will only evolve into Dusk Form Lycanroc, a new variant of the popular wolf Pokemon that is exclusive to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
The Charizard distribution for Pokemon Sun and Moon may have just ended, but players will have a chance to get another rare Pokemon very soon. Starting October 23, Sun and Moon players have a chance to add a rare shiny version of Silvally to their teams.
Like most other Pokemon distributions, the shiny Silvally will be available via a free download code. Those in the US and Canada can pick one up from GameStop and EB Games stores, respectively, until November 13; Pokemon fan site Serebii reports that players in the UK will be able to pick up their own download code at GAME stores from November 3-16.
To add shiny Silvally to your team, select Mystery Gift from Sun and Moon's main menu and choose the option to receive your gift via code/password. When prompted, enter the code you received and you'll be able to pick the Pokemon up from the deliveryman waiting inside any Pokemon Center.
Two new DLC packs--one free and one premium--are on the way to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in December with optional VR support. Capcom today revealed new details about both Not a Hero and End of Zoe expansions and shared a new trailer to tease what awaits.
As detailed previously, the free Not a Hero DLC brings series regular Chris Redfield into the mix. It's set after the base game's campaign and sees Redfield looking for Lucas Baker; in the process, he happens upon BSAA agents sent after Baker who ended up as prisoners. Not a Hero launches for free to all players on December 12.
Also coming on that day is End of Zoe, which Capcom says features a "mysterious outdoorsman named Joe who lives along the bank of the marshes and has a chance encounter with Zoe that sets both their fates in motion." This will be sold on its own for $15/£12 and is included with the game's season pass.
Like its predecessor, The Stick of Truth, Fractured but Whole puts players in the role of the New Kid, who moves into South Park and joins a superhero team with Cartman and other South Park mainstays. In GameSpot's South Park: The Fractured but Whole review, critic Miguel Concepcion called the game "a delightfully fart-tinged journey that delivers satisfying gameplay and surprising absurdity in equal measure."
Other outlets have likewise begun posting their reviews, and most seem to agree that South Park: The Fractured but Whole is another enjoyable adventure, especially for fans of the series. We've collected a sample of the game's reviews below; for a broader look at what critics think of the latest South Park RPG, be sure to visit GameSpot sister site Metacritic.
Game: South Park: The Fractured But Whole
Developer: Ubisoft San Francisco
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Release date: October 17, 2017
Price: US $60 / £55 / AU $100
GameSpot -- 8/10
"Fractured But Whole succeeds as an interactive South Park mini-series, while effectively emulating the show's current style of adult-targeted entertainment and satirization of political correctness. In other words, it's consistently amusing and provocative without the edginess the series used to be known for. Both the game's combat and explorative strengths effectively bridge the many comical plot developments, which range from mildly amusing to downright hilarious. It's an accomplishment that this game will wholly entertain devoted fans while delivering a heap of jokes that won't fly over the heads of casual viewers." -- Miguel Concepcion [Full review]
IGN -- 8.5/10
"South Park: The Fractured But Whole is another epic-length episode of the humor that's kept fans of the show laughing for 20 years. The Marvel vs DC parody delivers regular laugh-out-loud moments with only a few faltering gags, and the combat soon evolves into something much more complex and interesting than The Stick of Truth's simple system. Navigation and repetition of some of its simple puzzle mechanics drag a little, but it's otherwise an excellent South Park game that's also a strong RPG." -- Dan Stapleton [Full review]
Polygon -- 7/10
"The Fractured But Whole's breezy combat and puzzles provided a few days of entertainment, and the best moments of the game had me either laughing or, against all expectations, emotionally touched. I don't particularly regret my time with the game, but it mostly made me think about how much better the creators of both South Park and The Fractured But Whole could do if they were given the opportunity and space to grow up a little." -- Philip Kollar [Full review]
US Gamer -- 4/5
"Like Stick of Truth before it, South Park: The Fractured but Whole plays like an episode of the show. One of the good episodes, mind you, that's more about the kids interacting with each other than politics. Though it drags at times, The Fractured but Whole carries a sweet, twisted charm that makes it hard to resist if you're similarly twisted. It's still not recommended for anyone who never found the show funny to begin with, though." -- Nadia Oxford [Full review]
Eurogamer
"South Park: The Fractured But Whole is an RPG with tangible qualities and enjoyable passages, but without the bite or imagination you'd expect of the name. For anyone who grew up with the TV show, there's still some thrill to be had in simply walking around that familiar town, rubbing shoulders with its famous denizens and savouring the feeling of having an episode play out around you. But these were qualities of the last game too, and they have that bit less impact the second time around. Ubisoft San Francisco's rebuilt combat system goes some way to push back the sense of deja vu, but it entirely can't shake off the suspicion that this is a sequel which exists because its predecessor was so popular, not because its creators were brimming with more ideas." -- Phil Iwaniuk [Full review]
GamesRadar+ -- 4.5/5
"South Park balances ample fan service with gameplay that stands on its own merits and an engaging story. It won't make you a fan if you weren't one already, but it's hard to imagine a better-realized adaptation." -- Sam Prell [Full review]
It would have been all too easy to completely and totally screw up a Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel, delivering something so terrible that it actually made the good films in the series worse by association. That's not what Leatherface is. Instead, it's simply a competent movie with no clear identity or goals, that seems to exist mainly to deliver one over-enthusiastically telegraphed twist.
Being an origin story for one of the most iconic horror movie antagonists in cinematic history placed Leatherface in a precarious position from the get-go. We've seen enough of these to know they rarely add much to the mythos, and they often detract from it by carving away bloody chunks of the mystery. Leatherface is a murderous hillbilly with a chainsaw who wears people's faces. What more really needed to be said about this guy?
In the new Texas Chainsaw continuity into which this movie fits, Leatherface was a relatively innocent kid who's taken from his abusive family--including his savagely bloodthirsty mother Verna Sawyer, played with gumption by Lili Taylor--at a young age and placed in an institution. As a teenager, he escapes with a handful of other inmates and a hostage nurse, and most of Leatherface concerns his time spent on the lam. Stephen Dorff plays a crooked Texas Ranger with good reasons for hating the Sawyer clan, and Finn Jones--far less annoying here than in Iron Fist--is his naive deputy.
If you're not paying attention, you might not realize it, but Leatherface wants you to wonder which of the escapees is actually the titular villain. Early scenes put an emphasis on the fact that the institution changes the children's names when they're committed, and the movie doesn't actually confirm who the future Leatherface is until relatively late in its runtime. But the cast is insular enough that it's easy to spot the twist coming long before it happens.
Besides building toward that limp reveal, Leatherface doesn't really know what to do with itself. It's not as gory as it might have been, though a couple of scenes, especially one that flirts with necrophilia, exist only for their shock value and add nothing else to the movie. There are a few gruesome deaths, but nothing uniquely grisly enough to remember once the credits start rolling. It's shot conventionally, and the score, like the rest of the movie, is unremarkable.
The best thing there is to say about Leatherface is that it makes an effort to get you to care about certain characters who might not have been so sympathetic. It definitely stumbles into that unfortunate horror movie pitfall of, essentially, demonizing mental illness, but it tries to show multiple sides of various characters, and it's generally well-cast and effectively acted. Vanessa Grasse as the captive nurse, Lizzy, is an easy protagonist to root for, although you'll also want to scream at her to make better decisions--a slasher genre staple, to be fair.
Overall, Leatherface never really revs up and gets going as anything more than a schlocky, competent callback to better films. Then again, it could have been much worse. Either way, we'll always have the original.
Ahead of its imminent release on the Community Test Environment, DICE has provided a look at some new Battlefield 1 content. This comes from the game's next expansion, Turning Tides, and you can check it out in the video above.
One of the major components of what we got to see are two new maps: Cape Helles and Achi Baba. However, these maps are still in development; DICE has taken the unusual path of showing off white-box versions that don't yet have their final textures in place. That means you're seeing these maps in an early, unfinished state; you can expect the final releases in December to look nicer. Turning Tides will also include two other maps, Heligoland Bight and Zeebrugge, that will release in January.
In the video, you'll see some standard Conquest action as well as a new mode that returns from earlier in the series. In Conquest Assault, one team starts the round holding every point on the map; the enemy team attempts to make its way through to the last point before exhausting its supply of 250 tickets. Because the defending team doesn't have a headquarters, players on that side are only able to respawn on their teammates if they lose all of their capture points. If all members of the team die, the attacking team wins.
Turning Tides also of course includes new weapons--six guns and three melee weapons--a selection of which you can see in the video. The Assault kit gets the C96 Trench and M12P16, Medic gets the Farquhar-Hill (with range and stability variants), Support gets the Brownin GM1917 (also with a telescopic variant), and Recon gets the Arisaka and Carcano. There's also the new Breech gun Flak option for Assault players that is ideal for taking down airplanes, though it works just fine on enemy infantry, too.
Turning Tides is slated for release sometime this December and also includes two new vehicles, a new Operation, and an Elite class (the Infiltrator). Prior to that, those willing to wade into the CTE can check out a select portion of its content beginning on Tuesday, October 17. Turning Tides is the third major DLC pack for Battlefield 1 to date, with the Apocalypse DLC still to come in "early" 2018. In the meantime, you can put the latest Battlefield 1 update through its paces, which was released last week, and the Turning Tides concept art below.
Bungie will again conduct server maintenance for Destiny 2--and Destiny 1--today. Luckily, this won't result in any direct impact on players, at least according to Bungie's current plan.
"Backend maintenance" on both games is scheduled to begin at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET / 5 PM BST today, October 16 (3 AM AEDT on October 17). A duration for this was not shared, but Bungie said on Twitter, "There is currently no expected user impact during this maintenance."
With Star Wars Battlefront II launching next month, Sony has announced several new PS4 models themed around the game for North America and Europe. Each region gets multiple new new options, although for North Americans, only one of them actually sports a unique design.
As seen in the trailer and images below, the simply titled Star Wars Battlefront II PS4 Pro bundle features a black 1 TB system with Star Wars written on the front in white and some emblems on the top. These include the signature icons for the Galactic Empire and the Resistance in either corner in off-white, but featured in red in the middle is that of the Inferno Squad. This is the group you play as a member of in Battlefront II's single-player campaign.
This bundle comes with a matching black controller that again features the Empire and Resistance emblems on either side, as well as repeated versions of the Star Wars logo on the touchpad. Also included is a physical copy of Battlefront II's Deluxe Edition; this provides three days of early access and some in-game upgrade packs. It launches on November 14 in North America and Europe, three days before the game itself. European pricing was not shared, but in North America, it runs for $450 USD / $550 CAD.
Star Wars fans seeking a standard PS4 also have a new option. In Europe, this takes the form of a gray system that otherwise features the same design as the Pro unit. Despite the difference in base color, it comes with the same black controller as the Pro bundle and a Deluxe Edition of the game. Additionally, standard black versions of the PS4 Pro and PS4 will be bundled with the base edition of the game.
In North America, Sony will sell a standard black PS4 bundle with a standard edition copy of the game. This launches for $300 USD / $380 CAD on November 17, the same day as Battlefront II.
The NES Classic and SNES Classic are two great products that make it easy to revisit some of the best games from Nintendo's past, but when you consider the hundreds of other games that didn't make the cut, the selection begins to look a little slim. If you want to take the plunge and invest in vintage cartridges instead, you have two hardware options to consider: wrestle with old Nintendo consoles or look to third-party recreations.
Not all aftermarket systems are created equal, especially when Seattle-based Analogue is in the discussion. The company is highly regarded among classic game collectors who want the best experience possible when playing old games on modern displays, and it's just opened pre-orders for its next boutique console: the Super Nintendo-based Super Nt, coming in February 2018. At $190.00 (available for order worldwide), it's not cheap, but that's because Analogue aims to provide the best experience possible and has made a significant investment to ensure that it can redefine the standards by which all other SNES systems are measured.
Kevin Horton is a renowned engineer with an eye towards classic video games, and he's been working at Analogue full-time for the last 14 months developing what was previously thought to be a far-off achievement: a 100% accurate FPGA-based SNES. FPGAs are physically programmable circuits that can mimic hardware and, when handled correctly, can provide a more accurate approximation of classic systems (like the Super Nintendo) compared to traditional software emulation. It was previously known that a few hobbyists had made some progress on creating a Super Nintendo on an FPGA, but nothing approaching total accuracy or even commercial distribution. Because of this, Analogue's announcement is an exciting surprise if you're the sort of person interested in having the best gear available, in this case when it comes to playing 16-bit Nintendo games.
In simpler terms: Analogue promises that any Super Nintendo game you throw at the Super Nt, from any region around the world, will work on modern TVs without any flaws or finicky technical hurdles. But if you want to dig into the settings to adjust various aspects of visual and audible experience, there are plenty of options waiting to be tinkered with. By all appearances, the only feature missing from the Super NT that was present on the excellent NT Mini is a versatile analog video connection. While useful for purists who prefer the old glow of a CRT, this is apparently a little-used feature that was shaved off to reduce the cost of the system.
The other cost-cutting measure was the move from a milled aluminum chassis to an all-plastic design. In addition to lowering the entry point--the lowest ever for an Analogue console--this also means the Super Nt can be produced in various color schemes. The company has also partnered with 8bitdo, maker of high-quality wireless controllers for classic systems, to ship each Super Nt with matching controllers made custom for Analogue's new console.
We've yet to test Analogue's claims first-hand, but our experience with its CMVS Neo Geo and NT Mini NES have us convinced that the Super NT is worth looking forward to. For a more in-depth look into Analogue's handiwork, check out our full review of the impressive Nt Mini.
This past Tuesday was the first of October, and that means Sony has launched the month's lineup of PlayStation Plus freebies. PS Plus members can now download six more free games across PS4, PS3, and Vita.
PS4 owners actually get a total of four games in October, as both Vita games--Hue and Sky Force Anniversary--support Cross-Buy. PS3 owners, meanwhile, get a total of three; Cross-Buy brings them Sky Force in addition to Hustle Kings and Monster Jam Battlegrounds.
If you haven't already claimed the bonus free game That's You, it leaves PS Plus on October 24; PSVR game RIGS is free until November 7. An additional bonus will be introduced in October for Plus members, as they'll get closed beta access to Hand of the Gods, the spin-off of Smite. Until November 14, you can also get a free Plus Pack that consists of a special Galactic Invader Leader skin for Ah Puch, a card back, a player icon, and five Core Packs.
October's free PS Plus games are available now. You can grab them through the respective systems or on the PlayStation Store website.
For this week, it's The Inverted Spire, which you may remember as the Strike featured during the Destiny 2 beta. A time limit is in place as always, but it can be extended with the first of the two modifiers, Timewarp: Killing Time. This causes each kill to add to the time limit--to a certain point. Bungie doesn't specify the maximum, but you should nonetheless be aware that you can't indefinitely extend the mission by slaying enemies.
The other modifier for this Strike is Attrition, which we saw a couple of weeks ago. This "significantly impair[s]" both health and shield regeneration; combined with the time limit, this means that ducking behind cover whenever you take damage is a strategy that is unlikely to work. However, Attrition also causes enemies you kill to sometimes leave behind a Well of Light; collect this, and it'll restore your health and charge up your Super.
As for Challenges, we again get Speed of Dark, which requires you to finish the Strike with at least five minutes remaining on the timer. Unbroken tasks you with dying fewer than three times during the entire Strike. And finally, The Floor is Lava requires you and your Fireteam to avoid getting hit by Protheon's fiery ground attack during the boss fight.
Completion of the Nightfall rewards players with Powerful Gear rewards. This is one of the few activities to offer those, and they're among the best items you can get your hands on. It's also a reliable way to increase your Power level past 265, should you be struggling to pass that point. If you haven't made it to that point, you may want to consider waiting until after you've raised your Power level before grabbing the Nightfall reward. This Nightfall will be available until the next weekly reset, which occurs at 2 AM PT / 5 AM ET / 10 AM BST / 4 PM AEST on Tuesday, October 17.
If you haven't yet unlocked the Nightfall, you'll need to complete two Strikes and approach the suggested Power level of 240 before Zavala will allow you to take part in them. Traditional matchmaking is not available, but in its place we have Guided Games, providing players with the opportunity to be matched up with members of a clan for the mission (which requires a Nightfall Ticket). Alternatively, clan members can sign up to serve as guides through the Nightfall. Doing so does not require a Ticket.

Marvel Entertainment has released a new trailer for Black Panther, providing a look at the wonders of Wakanda. The trailer also sets up T'Challa as the new king of the hidden nation, and shows Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, an exile seeking to overthrow Wakanda's rightful monarch.
The impressive trailer is packed with plenty of superhero action and a fair bit of burgeoning turmoil, all set--appropriately--to a bombastic version of Gil Scott Heron's "The Revolution Shall Not Be Televised," with some voice samples from Long Beach rapper Vince Staples. Check it out above.
Last year, Boseman, who plays T'Challa, suggested that the movie will adopt a different tone to many of the other movies in the Marvel universe. "For me, most of the time the darker superhero movies are the ones that I gravitate towards, that I love the most," he said. "I'm glad that the tone of [Black Panther] may be a little grittier.
"I just wanted to establish that from the beginning, that that's what we were doing," he continued, referring to the character's first appearance in this year's Captain America: Civil War. "That that's what I intend to do. I feel like we'll end up in a place that I've always wanted to be when I look at superhero movies. Those are the ones I like the most. It's exciting to do that."
After unveiling a surprise Switch port of Doom during a recent Direct presentation, Nintendo has now revealed when you'll be able to play the portable version. Doom will launch for Nintendo Switch on November 10 this year.
The company had previously given a "Holiday 2017" release window, choosing not to reveal a specific date. Thankfully, we now know exactly when we'll be able to shoot monsters in hell while on the go. In addition, Nintendo has posted a new video about the port--take a look at the developer interview below.
Doom first launched on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2016. Our critic, Peter Brown, awarded the game an 8/10 in our full Doom review. "The loud and chaotic campaign is Doom's strongest component," he wrote. "It's straightforward and simple, but it serves its purpose: to thrust you into increasingly dire scenarios fueled by rage and the spirit of heavy metal.
"Many shooters chase the thrill Doom delivers, but few are as potent in their execution. It captures the essence of what made the classic Doom games touchstones of their day, and translates it to suit modern palates with impressively rendered hellscapes and a steady influx of tantalizing upgrades. Doom is the product of a tradition as old as shooters, and while it's not the model to follow in every case, modern shooters could learn a thing or two from Doom's honed and unadulterated identity."
Pokemon Go's roster of creatures may be about to grow even larger. A datamine arising from a recent update has suggested the mobile game may receive Generation 3 monsters in an upcoming Halloween event.
The image below shows some Ghost-type Gen 3 Pokemon in a spooky setting, leading some to conclude they'll be added in the event. Although Gen 3 critters have not yet been officially confirmed for Pokemon Go by developer Niantic or the Pokemon Company, the latter has stated an event is coming with "plenty of good stuff" included. A Niantic representative told GameSpot the company has nothing new to share at this time.
In addition to the image, the datamine apparently uncovered sounds for all species up to #386 (Deoxys, the final Pokemon found in Generation 3), a new Gen 3 badge, Halloween music (including the famously spooky Lavender Town theme), and other files pertaining to the Halloween event. GameSpot has reached out to Niantic's representatives for comment.
Pokemon seen in the image include Duskull, Dusclops, Shuppet, Banette, and Sableye. All of these are Ghost-type, so it would make sense for them to be introduced at Halloween. It's unclear whether more Gen 3 Pokemon will be added at the same time: Gen 2 Pokemon were added in stages, and a few still haven't made their way into the game.
Interestingly, the image also appears to show a trainer wearing a Mimikyu hat--Mimikyu being a Generation 7 Pokemon and the image being the first time Pokemon Go has included content from a generation currently unavailable in-game.
The Halloween event might not have been revealed yet, but another is currently ongoing. Until October 25, the best AR photos taken in-game have the chance of winning some cool prizes. Finally, Pokemon Go's Legendary Dogs have switched location. This time, players in the Americas will have a chance to catch the Fire-type Entei; the Water-type Suicune has moved to Europe and Africa; and the Electric-type Raikou can be found in the Asia-Pacific region. The three Pokemon will remain in their current location until October 31; on that date, the Legendaries will rotate to their final region, where they'll be available until November 30.
What other creatures from Hoenn and Pokemon Ruby / Sapphire would you like to see added to Pokemon Go? Let us know in the comments below!
Middle-earth: Shadow of War has been available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC for a few days now, and if you're anything like us, you'll have carved your way through a healthy chunk of Sauron's army. However, you've probably also run into the tricky Fortress Assaults, seen the intricacies of the game's Nemesis system, and also scrutinised the abilities screen for far too long. They can all be overwhelming in the later stages, which is why we've put together some very useful advanced tips to make things a little bit easier.
In the video above, we cover how you can get higher level followers, which requires some hard work but is definitely worth the effort. We'll show you how you can use gems to maximise your rewards and build a powerful army of high-level orcs. Then, we dive into how you can cause maximum mayhem with them. Worms are another major part of the game, and we'll show you how to use their loose lips to sink some very large orc ships (read: fortresses).
After that, we've got all the hot info on using combat dominate to quickly tear through the enemy forces, the most efficient way to use Mirian--the main in-game currency, how to get the most out of the Nemesis system, the best way to approach online fortress assaults, and all the best skills to get to make you an all-around killing/resource gathering machine. It's a comprehensive video guide.
In GameSpot's Shadow of War review, Justin Haywald awarded it a 7/10, saying that "it tries to be larger than its predecessor … yet it leaves you wanting less." He continued: "But at its core, it's a fun experience with brilliant moments that provide fascinating insight into some of the untold stories of Middle-earth."
If you want to get caught up on the story before playing the game, there's a Shadow Of War story recap narrated by Bruz, the charming Olog that took center stage during the game's E3 presentation. Or you can read our Shadow of War story so far article for a quick overview.
A new Hearthstone hero is joining the fray this Halloween season, and you can claim her for free starting October 17. Warlock Nemsy Necrofizzle will be available at any Fireside Gathering Tavern--even after the Hallow's End festivities come to a close.
If you're wondering where you've seen this tiny, red-headed warlock before, you wouldn't be wrong in recognizing her. Nemzy has been seen on the Bog Creeper card from the Whispers of the Old Gods expansion set.
To get your hands on this pint-sized gal, all you have to do is participate in a Fireside Brawl at any Fireside Gathering Tavern. These taverns, which are a part of the game's Halloween event, are real-life locations and events. For more details on finding one near you or hosting, head on over to the Fireside Gatherings website.
This month, the exclusive Fireside Brawl is a game of Tag Team. While you're out at one of the Taverns, you'll be paired with others around you for a 3v3 team tournament.
One thing you can count on every October, aside from a bunch of big game releases, are developers releasing Halloween-themed updates and events. Halloween is still weeks away, and already we've seen a number of such announcements, and some of these events are already underway. [Updated October 13 with Minecraft and Gears of War 4.]
With so much going on, it can be difficult to keep track of everything that's happening. Given that many of these events, such as Overwatch's Halloween Terror, provide you with a limited amount of time to obtain items you can use year-round, you'll want to stay on top of how and when you can expand your collection. We've compiled a list of many of the Halloween-themed events happening in games this month, and we'll continue to update this as more are announced. Check everything out below, and let us know what you'll be playing (as well as any we missed) in the comments.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
Activision will host a monthlong event in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare called Willard Wyler's Halloween Scream that features several different components. Each week, players will be able to pick up a free Halloween Supply Drop by logging in, as well as a Halloween-themed cosmetic item on each Friday. Halloween gear and loot, such as a zombie-themed Rig skin, will also be up for grabs.
Additionally, Gesture Warfare mode--where you take out opponents by doing things like pinching your fingers--returns for a limited time. Carnage, one of the maps in the Retribution DLC, will be free to all players from October 12 until November 1 in a special playlist that runs only that map and offers double XP. Finally, Boss Battle will allow DLC owners to tackle a different Zombie episode's final fight each week.
The Coalition is marking Halloween in Gears of War 4 in a variety of ways. As the video above reveals, Friday the 13th marks the return of Skorge, the Locust general who will make an appearance as a skin. Later in the month, players can jump into a special multiplayer playlist that adorns everyone with a pumpkin head, or take part in a special mode called Phantom Dodgeball. The Coalition has also teased "a few extra surprises," of which Skorge is likely one.
Dates
October 13 (Skorge)
October 27 - TBA (pumpkin heads, Phantom Dodgeball)
Heroes of the Storm once again sees its Hallow's End event, which kicks off this month. However, this marks the first Halloween since Blizzard launched HotS' new Loot Chest system, which means things work a bit differently than in the past. Like in Overwatch, event-specific chests will replace the standard ones during the event. You'll earn one with every level up, and at least one of the four rewards inside is guaranteed to be a Hallow's End item, which includes skins, mounts, sprays, and portraits. Weekly Brawl rewards after October 20 will take the form of a Hallow's End chest, and these can also be purchased using gems.
Also during the event, you can make progress toward quests that will net you a special spray (by playing two games), banner (eight games), and portrait (15 games). However, Custom Games, Training matches, and Brawls don't count toward these totals.
Minecraft's Halloween Spooktacular event is officially underway. This brings special, themed content and activities to official servers for players on Bedrock Engine platforms (which is to say, most versions of the game). Among other things, the Lifeboat server is home to a haunted house parkour course; InPvP has the Haunted Mansion SkyWare map; and Mineplex brings The Pumpkin King, plus quests, flaming pumpkins to fight, and more. You can get a look at what awaits in the video and gallery above.
For its second October, Blizzard has brought back Overwatch's Halloween Terror event. It replaces the standard Loot Box with an event-specific one, which contains a variety of Halloween-themed cosmetic items. These include both those from last year and more than 50 new ones, such as Legendary skins for Ana, Symmetra, Zenyatta, and McCree. Last year's Junkenstein's Revenge event also returns as a special Brawl mode--this is a Horde-style co-op game type where a team of four takes on waves of AI-controlled enemies. New to this year's version is an endless variant, where you can compete on leaderboards by seeing how many waves you can successfully make it through.
As part of the Shadow's Eve event, Paragon players will be able to get their hands on limited-edition chests. These contain regular items and Shadow's Eve-specific rewards, including skins and banners. Narbash, Wukong, and Yin have received new skins for the event, and each week will offer up a selection of different skins from last year. (These skins and banners are only available during the event.) A special Mega Bundle that includes all of this will be sold from October 24 - November 11; you'll receive a discount if you've already gotten your hands on any of the contents.
Dates
Now - November 1 (Shadow's Eve)
October 24 - November 11 (Shadow's Eve Mega Bundle)
Niantic's specific plans for the Halloween celebration in Pokemon Go have not yet been revealed, but we do know an event of some sort is coming. The Pokemon Company has teased that "plenty of good stuff is coming to the game later this October." We'll report back once more details are shared.
Dates
TBA October
Smite
The newest patch for Smite brings back the Halloween makeover for Arena mode's map and the Scary Potion. The latter messes around with players--last year's version, for instance, would occasionally play a Loki sound effect that made you think you were about to be backstabbed. Additionally, a Halloween chest is for sale that includes things like spooky and themed skins (Trick or Treat Cupid and Grim Reaper Thanatos). Through the Odyssey, there are new Halloween skins you can buy directly, such as Mummified Izanami and Yurei Susano.
Blizzard hasn't yet revealed its full Halloween plans for World of Warcraft, but we do know that Hallow's End will return. The event "celebrates the break of the Forsaken from the Scourge," Blizzard says. "Fun and mischief reign as the Innkeepers of Azeroth give treats, and tricks, to whomever asks."
It is Xur day my dudes! Which means it's time to once again look into the Destiny 2 merchant's cavernous void of a face and shuffle through Exotic wares to find something that tickles your fancy. Don't get too close though, who knows what those weird tendrils will do.
This week, Xur has planted himself on Nessus. It's fairly straightforward to get to him as he's popped up there before. Simply fast travel to Watcher's Grave and then scoot over to the tree in the north end of the area. You'll spot him lurking at the top of the large tree. He has the usual array of three pieces of Exotic armor and one weapons for sale. Here's what you can expect to find.
Knucklehead Radar (Hunter Class Helmet): 23 Legendary Shards
Peacekeepers (Titan Leg Armor): 23 Legendary Shards
Wings of Sacred Dawn (Warlock Class Chest Armor): 23 Legendary Shards
Earlier this week Destiny 2's Iron Banner event kicked off. If you'd like to see all the Iron Banner weapons, gears, and other rewards, head to our gallery. In related news, Bungie has said it is hearing criticism of Destiny 2's endgame activities and is taking it to heart. Although it didn't provide any specific details, the developer nonetheless said that discussions about endgame improvements are happening internally.
Furthermore, Bungie has said it is working on fixing Destiny 2's black screen issue. In the meantime, it has detailed two workarounds that can help alleviate the issue. A new hotfix for the game--1.0.3.2.--was out this week, and it fixed issues involving The Tower crashing when players load into it. This is separate from the black screen issue mentioned above.
Speaking to GameSpot today at the Brazil Game Show, Xbox boss Phil Spencer spoke out against the idea of companies like Microsoft paying to secure exclusive content in games. He immediately recognises the irony of this situation, given that Microsoft had the timed-exclusive deal with Call of Duty before it shifted to Sony. The company is also working with Activision on a timed-exclusivity deal for Destiny 2, while Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 will have some content that's exclusive to PS4, at least for a time.
But on Microsoft's side, it sounds like you shouldn't expect these kinds of deals to happen on Xbox. "People always knock me on this; I've been on record... I don't love the idea or practice of us paying so other platforms can't play or use a certain gun in a game or do a certain level," he said. "I know I say that and, Xbox history--DLC exclusivity windows with Call of Duty--I understand the fingers are pointing right back to Xbox. I can only be who I am. It's not the best PR answer. But I don't like that."
In terms of timed-exclusives for full games, Microsoft recently reached a deal with PUBG developer Bluehole to bring the game to Xbox One this year as a "console launch exclusive." It could very well come to PlayStation 4 at some point down the road, but no announcements have been made about that. Microsoft's deal with Bluehole, which presumably includes funds to help support the game's development (and may reportedly get extended), is part of Microsoft's aim to make the "best games possible" for Xbox.
"People ask, when's that coming to PlayStation? I've got a deal, working with [Bluehole] to build the very best version of PUBG," he said. "That's where I am focused. Right now, we're helping that game come to console. Our focus is on making the best games possible."
Another recent example of a exclusivity deal Microsoft made is with StudioMHR for the well-received and very difficult platformer/run-and-gunner Cuphead. The game is exclusive on console to Xbox One forever (though it is also available on PC). It is never coming to PlayStation 4. Spencer said Microsoft invested in Cuphead because it saw potential in the title and wanted to help make it all that it could be.
"When there are games that come along, Cuphead is a good example, and the team had certain ambition about what they wanted to go do," he said. "And together with them we wanted to invest more. We saw more opportunity. And what that turned into was us having an exclusive game on our platform. That's a game that probably wouldn't have happened the way it did if we didn't invest the way we did."
Console exclusives are a way to drive sales of a particular system. Microsoft has Halo and Gears of War and Forza, while Sony has Uncharted, God of War, Killzone, and others, just to name a few. While there will probably always be full exclusives like these, Spencer said the future of gaming lies in games that may not necessarily be tied to a specific device.
"If you define the gaming market as console and that's all you're focused on, then maybe that's an important part of the business consideration," Spencer said about console-exclusives driving system sales. "I'd say one of the reasons PC is still so strong, is because it's an open platform. Through things like cross-play we're working to allow people to play games together regardless of where you bought the games. if you're really about trying to drive just a specific device and say I just looked at the gaming opportunity all up as a single device opportunity, maybe that's an approach. We don't see it that way.
"When we look at things that are really large in gaming today, we look at Twitch, Steam, PUBG, Minecraft. People on Minecraft on Switch are playing with people on an iPhone. They don't own a Windows machine or an Xbox. But they own our game or are using Xbox Live across multiple devices, that's what gaming in the future is about. Getting caught in a definition of gaming that's about me trying to do everything I can to get you to buy one specific device to play one specific variant of games, is not really about growing the business."
For lots more on our conversation with the boss of Xbox, see the stories linked below. You can also read GameSpot's full interview with Phil Spencer here. It encapsulates all the stories featured below plus a little more insight from the Xbox boss on 4K TVs, staying ahead of the curve in tech, and Microsoft's strategy for third-party games.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer was a big fan of Destiny 1, having played some 700 hours of it. He's also logging time in the sequel, and now he's told us more about his time with the game. Speaking to GameSpot at the Brazil Game Show today, Spencer said he keeps his fireteam (and sometimes his Xbox Live party settings) open so anyone can join him. His gamertag, which he frequently shares openly on Twitter and elsewhere, is P3
He has to kick people out from time to time, however, because he's not a high enough level to play end-game activities like Leviathan raid. He told us at the show that his character is Power level 237. You need to be at least 260 to play the raid. Not being a high enough Power level for the raid keeps him awake at night, Spencer said, perhaps jokingly.
Spencer's public page on Destinytracker shows that his character, an Awoken Titan, now has a Power level of 241. That's not the highest, of course, but Spencer is a busy, busy person with a lot on his plate, so it's understandable. He told us he's traveled to Tokyo, the US east coast, and then Brazil just in the past few weeks.
The Xbox boss also told us about which weapon he wants the most in Destiny 2. After very much enjoying the MIDA Multi-Tool in Destiny 1, he's looking to get the weapon in the sequel.
Spencer also light-heartedly said he's bummed that Bungie won't allow him to play his Destiny 2 character in the PC version right now. The game doesn't launch for PC until October 24, but given his high-up position and contacts, we wouldn't be surprised if Spencer received some form of early access.

As the Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer played a key role in bringing the critically acclaimed platformer Cuphead to Xbox One and PC as an exclusive for Microsoft. One of the perks of his position is getting to play games ahead of release. He told us at the Brazil Game Show today that while he beat all the bosses ahead of launch, he hasn't completed the retail version of the game--and he has a good reason.
"I think I finished all of the bosses at one point before it launched. But no. I've been traveling for four weeks in a row so I haven't had much chance to play," Spencer said. "It is [an excuse]."
Spencer also told us that Cuphead is selling "very well," though he didn't get into specifics about sales numbers. "I am so happy for the studio; they worked a long time on the game. And to have the success they're having--it's selling very well," he said. "The reaction has been great. It's just fantastic when those kind of things come together."
As part of Microsoft's exclusivity deal for Cuphead, the game is staying exclusive to Xbox One and PC forever. It is never coming to PlayStation 4. Spencer said the version of Cuphead that exists today might never have happened were it not for Microsoft's investment.
"The team had certain ambition about what they wanted to go do. And together with them we wanted to invest more," he said. "We saw more opportunity. And what that turned into was us having an exclusive game on our platform. That's a game that probably wouldn't have happened the way it did if we didn't invest the way we did."
Developer StudioMDHR has announced that Cuphead has gone platinum, having sold more than 1 million copies since launch. It did not provide any kind of breakdown between Xbox One and PC, which are the only two platforms Cuphead is available on currently.
Middle-earth: Shadow of War and The Evil Within 2 both launched last week, but they were beaten to the top of the UK physical sales charts by FIFA 18 for the week ending October 14. EA's football title is top of the table for a third week in a row, with Shadow of War and The Evil Within 2 following in No.2 and No.3, respectively.
The pair of new releases push Forza Motorsport 7 down to No.4, Forza Horizon 3 to No.5, and Destiny 2 to No.6. It's the first time Bungie's shooter has dropped out of the top five since its launch in early September. The only other new release was the physical version of Friday the 13th: The Game, which debuts at No.15 after launching digitally in May.
You can read the full top 10 sales chart below, courtesy of Chart-Track. Note this table does not include digital sales data, and so should not be considered representative of all UK game sales.
"It's not true that people don't play it. I've seen those online arguments about nobody uses it or everybody uses it. It's not true that everybody plays backwards compatibility games, it's not true that no one does," he said. "A lot of the data is third party data so I can't really tell you how many people are playing a certain game; it's not my game. I think the best signal we had so far is when Black Ops II landed and that month it hit NPD's Top 10 that month for game sales. An Xbox 360 game that's years old, that shows that people care."
The Xbox One is the only new-generation console that has true backwards compatibility support. The PlayStation 4, by comparison, requires users to re-purchase older games to play on the system through PlayStation Now and the PS2 Classics program.
"We continue to invest in back-compat because it matters. Not because somebody else [Sony] doesn't have it. If somebody else did it tomorrow, we wouldn't stop. We see it as a commitment to our customers that the games you buy from us [will work on new platforms]."
In addition to Xbox 360 games, the backwards compatibility lineup will add support for Original Xbox games before the end of the year. Microsoft is "really close" to launching this, Spencer told us, also teasing some news about support on Xbox One X.
Also in our interview, Spencer spoke about how he wants to move beyond the old way of thinking that when you buy a new console, your purchases for the older device are rendered useless. That's part of the reason why backwards compatibility is so important to Microsoft.
"I want to give gamers a choice. It's about growing gaming not being divisive and artificially trying to move you ahead. That's why Xbox One X plays the same games Xbox One S does. PC has done this for years. It's not rocket science in how you figure this out."
For more on our conversation with Spencer, check out the stories linked below or our full Q&A with the Xbox boss.
Now, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has provided an update on where things stand with Sony. He told us at the Brazil Game Show today that Microsoft speaks with Sony all the time, but the conversations haven't amounted to anything--and they may never.
"We talk to Sony all the time. With Minecraft on PlayStation, we have to be one of the biggest games on their platform in terms of sales and gameplay," Spencer said. "Same with Nintendo. The relationship with Nintendo on this front has been strong. They've been great supporters and we continue to collaborate with them. But I think Sony's view is different. They should talk about what their view is..."
Asked if cross-play between Xbox One and PS4 is a lost cause, Spencer said he doesn't want to speak for Sony. Nothing is ever set in stone, but the way things are now with Sony makes Spencer believe the company may never come around.
"I have a real struggle making comments about their motivation or timelines. I know there is a certain view that says if my friends have this console, they can't play with people who buy another console. That's a reason they go buy my console," he said. "That reason is not going to go away. So we're putting Minecraft out there as one of the biggest games on any platform and allowing people to play together regardless of what device they bought. I don't think everybody is taking that same approach to the ecosystem. So I'm never going to call anything a lost cause but I think some of the fundamental reasons and certain scenarios, they're not really going away. So I don't know what would change."
Speaking generally about the appeal of cross-play, Spencer said it allows the multiplayer environments for games to stay rich, because the player pools are larger than they otherwise might be.
"I think people look at [cross-play] and say is it better for gamers. If it's better for gamers, I have a hard time thinking why we shouldn't go do this, especially when you're trying to make the gaming business a bigger business; grow it, get more games, create more opportunity," he said. "Especially in the indie space, actually. If you're creating an online indie game and you're going to create five [shards] of your game--the Steam version, Xbox Live on PC, Xbox version, the PlayStation version, the Switch version creates hard matchmaking scenarios. We should help developers, not make their lives more difficult."
You can also read GameSpot's full interview with Phil Spencer here. It encapsulates all the stories featured above plus a little more insight from the Xbox boss on 4K TVs, staying ahead of the curve in tech, and Microsoft's strategy for third-party games.
