WWE 2K18 is a few weeks away from its release on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, hitting stores on October 17, with the Switch version coming later this fall. The newest installment of the sports entertainment series offers improved graphics, a more in-depth MyCareer mode, and for the first time in 2K's run, up to eight superstars competing in a match at the same time.
Once again, WWE 2K18 boasts the largest roster ever, with over 180 original playable stars. In addition, there are multiple match types from one on one to eight stars fighting on their own, and every variation in between with quite a few stipulations to add to your matches. In addition, it adds Road to Glory mode, which adds a new dynamic to the typical online play that comes in the way of certain tasks that must be performed during each match.
During a WWE 2K event at the WWE Archives in Connecticut, GameSpot had the opportunity to talk to two of the devs behind the game: creative director Lionel Jinx and Ramel Balesta, the game designer behind the revamped MyCareer as well as the online mode Road to Glory.
GameSpot: One of the new additions to last year's game were the segments and promos in MyCareer as well as Universe mode. What improvements have you made to it this year?
Ramel Balesta: Especially with the promos, one of the things that we felt we were lacking, was just making superstars feel like themselves when they're getting in the ring, doing those promos. We added a ton of animations to specific superstars like the Undertaker, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Enzo so that they feel like themselves when doing a promo.
Is it going to be kinda the same format where somebody says something and you reply? I loved the idea, but it felt like as a player I couldn't understand sometimes what was going on.
RB: We saw that too, I mean we listen to you guys a lot. One of the things that we noticed was that the way we scored promos wasn't essentially the best way, so we changed that this year. Now instead of scoring based on are you being a good guy or a bad guy, we focused it on more so just picking a topic and sticking to that topic. You see that a lot with the combos from last year that was probably the most fun part, so we took that and put that on the forefront and said, "Hey, all right, you have four choices of the things you want to relate to the WWE Universe." Then from there, scoring based on are you sticking to what you are saying or are you sort of flip-flopping a little bit? Now, you could totally say what you want, and you'll be scored heavily based off of that now.
There was a lot of mention of the fact your MyCareer character will have many different people to interact with backstage. How does that kind of come into play into the whole MyCareer mode?
RB: This year, we sort of shifted back to telling a narrative, so a lot of that is going to happen backstage. You're going to be talking to superstars, getting into rivalries with them backstage, and then you might want to ambush them backstage during the storyline and stage a backstage brawl and take them over to the limousine and hit them over there. We want to make sure that when we tell these storylines it's not just two people talking. We wanted to add a lot of the interactivity that we've had in the game, so enabling those interviews with Rene and also again...
Lionel Jinx: Side quests as well.
RB: Yeah, side quests as well. When you're not actually in a storyline, you could go up to some other superstars, and they'll tell you, "Hey this guy ambushed me last week. I want you to do the dirty work." You can get a lot of that different flavor in there also.
You can become a minion for whomever is backstage?
LJ: Yeah, and there's legends too that you can interact with backstage as well in MyCareer.
RB: One of the storylines involves talking to legends and getting their take on how to become a superstar. I don't want to talk too much of the storyline, but you'll get involved with people like The Rock, and they'll sort of guide you along the way as well.
There was going to also be the inclusion of other players who are using the game or if you are friends with them on Xbox or PlayStation. Are there gonna be other people you can also interact with or are they just guys you can just beat up in the background?
RB: No, we treat them just like any other superstar, any roster superstar for instance. They'll be backstage. Yes, you can brawl with them at your leisure, but also you'll get side quests, and they'll tell you what to do in terms of like, "Hey, do you wanna do a promo with them?" Or do a backstage brawl with them, or do a match with them and get like five stars during that match. We treat them just like any other superstar.
This year's game had a big bump in the graphics department. What was the process for this and how did you make it even more realistic than last year's game?
LJ: I was set in that direction, and honestly just working with Yuke's to make sure that they reach what my goal was and our goal was. For me, it was to deliver the best looking wrestling game ever, right?
It's disappointing when we came out [with] WWE 2K15 on the current gen platforms now, and we saw what the guys upstairs on NBA were doing and what everyone else was doing, it just wasn't there. Every year, we try to push it, and we just couldn't do it without rewriting the whole graphics engine, and so that was the mandate from day one when we started working on this thing, and we worked real closely with Yuke's to ensure that we basically got what you see now.
It took a long time to get it that way and to get there, but I feel like we hit it, and I'm glad you feel the same way because it's one of those things when you're working in that bubble and you are comparing yourself to what you did last year and years previously. You kind of get tunnel vision and so you don't really see, you know its like, "I think we did it." But it's great to hear your guys' response and seeing the hard work that we put in, not only at VC 2K, but at Yuke's as well.
This is the first time you guys have included eight-man matches. Prior to that, we've only seen six-man matches, aside from that Royal Rumble game for Dreamcast. What was your decision behind going eight-man matches, aside from getting closer to a traditional Survivor Series match?
LJ: For us, Survivor Series, but we need one more to recreate that accurately, but I think since we picked up the license from THQ that was kind of our goal, but again, when this franchise has a history that's really long with Yuke's and there's already an engine there, there's certain limitations that we couldn't get past. I mean it's not only just what we can do graphically, but what the gameplay limitations are as well. We finally got a point where we could spend some time in making sure we could create a cohesive eight-man match without things just blowing up or some unpredictable happening as well as creating a whole new system on how we can render eight guys on the screen at once and keep frame rate at a reasonable rate.
One of the things we had to do was to introduce some [level of detail] which we've never had on the current gen platform. What you were seeing was the high-res model all the time in the previous iteration of our game, and this year, in order to get eight men working, we really had to look at ways that we can optimize the character for those match types so that we can run eight men.
One of the new gameplay mechanics you guys have added this year is carrying. What is the carry system and what does it add to the game?
LJ: The carry system, I know it's been in previous versions of the game but it was one of the thing's that hasn't been in the most recent games. It was implemented in a much more limited fashion previously, so what we wanted to do was create a new carry system that had all these modifiers that you can you carry a guy in different positions, if you want to put him in the powerbomb position, if you want to carry him into a fireman's carry, or if you just want to modify how you walk around and carry that guy and interact with the objects around the ring, in the ring, backstage. To me, it felt like the right time to create that freedom now that we introduced all these different areas to our game.
One of the driving forces too was who's on the roster now, you're seeing guys like Braun Strowman picking guys up and throwing them out. So that kind of drove that as well, just seeing what's happening on programing, and this was really the only way to do it accurately but not just with a cut scene or just a preset move but to allow the users to do it as well, and not just in a Royal Rumble match, just giving that freedom to everyone everywhere.
Showcase mode is gone, which you had included with DLC last year, and it was the focus two years ago, and now the focus is on MyCareer. Is there gonna be enough for the average person to play within MyCareer?
RB: I think it's a combination of My Career and Road to Glory now. You're going to create your MyCareer player, and then you're going to have this ecosystem that you can play in where, if you wanna go online and challenge other players with my MyPlayer, I can do that. Or if you just want to hear a really good storyline and take the MyPlayer through several narrative experience, that's what MyCareer is for, but it's really Road to Glory I feel like is the new feature this year.
LJ: I think we talked about that. It was the objectives that you get in Road to Glory mimic what you used to be able to do in Showcase, I think a lot of people like that. It's like, "Oh there was these objectives I had to complete these objectives in order to move the story along." But those objectives are now in Road to Glory in the daily events. In order to get that pay-per-view event and qualify for that match, you gotta get those stars and in order to do so you have to complete those objectives in the daily event. We feel like, that to me we hit on that, but it's going to constantly be changing and it's going to be different every pay-per-view. I think that's going to give it more legs than Showcase ever had because we're going to be updating this throughout the whole year.
In Create a Superstar mode, what are the big changes this year for the game?
LJ: For me, it's seeing what everyone else is saying and the things that they want to create, so that's kind of our drawing board. Every year, we try to enhance it even more. For us, it was seeing how similar a lot of the faces--even with the face photo capture--we're still seeing a lot of superstars that look the same. On the 2K Dev Instagram throughout the year, I would post the 2K Fav of the day. Seeing a lot of similar generic looking guys because of their face or whatever, we saw that was one of the things that we wanted to reintroduce was just having really good templates for people to start off with.
Having different races and ethnicities to help break up that variety, but then not losing the ability to customize that even further if you want to, using the face photo capture, or even just moving sliders around. We still kept that in place. Like I said the teeth option, being able to like hide teeth, which was like seeing it on Mick Foley, but I can't recreate someone who looks like that. So things like that, adding support for different materials like glow, which was really hard to get in, black light. I know people want to create really crazy out there superstars...
That's me.
LJ: Right, and I'm with you. Just seeing what the community creates, that kind of drives what we wanna do. Like having the ability to not only limit the glow on attire but on tattoos or on your hairstyle, whatever. If you want to create a guy who's just from a different planet, you can. It's just making sure you guys have the tools to create and have the freedom to create guys that you want rather than feeling like you're limited because you don't have a certain tool or certain method to do things.
Every year, we know we're going to add more things, like one of my favorite features I talked about in my dev videos was, I'm an old school guy, the 8-bit filter for Create-A-Show. Just having your game look different, the hashtag "be like no one" is not just a tag on. That was our thing. We want everyone's game and experience to be different. Like I said, like the heads, we don't want the same looking guy all over the place, if you want to create a... Like last year. we did the old bad VHS filter, added the 8-bit filter you know just because I think, which was kind of inspired by Ramel. On the inside, he does like 8-bit art, which I really think is brilliant. I'm like, "Aw man, that'd be cool if we added a filter." We added that, so you can have a show that looks like an old school video game.
The other area was, Create a Video, saving highlights was the big thing. I know last year a lot of people complained that you weren't able to have free cam, we added that support back in there but we took it a step further, by allowing you to hide the background, hide the referee, hide the crowd. So [that] you can create like a green screen effect when encoding your videos you can overlay in the actual Create a Video option, overlay things on top of it, behind it, so you can have your superstars placed on different videos, videos placed on top of it. Just, giving users the ability to have their own video, tron, or whatever that feels like it's at the same quality as the rest of the WWE superstars on this.
Much like last year, Blizzard will celebrate October in Overwatch with a Halloween-themed event. Halloween Terror makes a return next week and will run for the remainder of the month, offering new cosmetic items for players to earn.
Blizzard announced today that Halloween Terror has a release date of October 10 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and it runs through November 2. It also shared the very brief teaser video above that shows off new Halloween-themed skins for McCree and Reaper, the latter of which already had an excellent one from last year's event. The video was accompanied by a poem which reads: "The nights grow cold / And monsters appear / A great evil gathers / And Halloween draws near..."
Further specifics have not yet been announced, but along with new cosmetics, we may also see the return of Junkenstein's Revenge. (That seems likely given that Junkrat's Junkenstein skin is featured in the logo for this year's event.) The co-op mode pits a team of four against waves of enemies in what amounts to Overwatch's take on Horde mode. We'll report back as Blizzard shares more details; for now, the developer has only said that the update introduces "spooky new content."
As you can see in the images below, The Tower has been decorated to commemorate the win, which was determined by the faction that earned the most reward packages during the week-long Faction Rallies event. As a result, all players can now purchase the Legendary scout rifle Haunted Earth from Dead Orbit leader Arach Jalaal; the weapons from Future War Cult and New Monarchy can't be purchased. Haunted Earth is priced at 50,000 glimmer, unless you were a member of Dead Orbit, in which case it costs only 1,000 glimmer.
Maintenance for Destiny 2 has ended sooner than expected, and the game is now back online. Bungie has also released a new hotfix update, version 1.0.3.1, which we first got a preview of last week.
As you can guess from the version number, this isn't a major update in terms of new features or anything of the sort. It deals primarily with bug fixes, including an issue where clan Engrams were handed out with only 10 Power level. The His Highness's Seal Exotic quest step now increments properly, so it should be easier to complete, and the weekly reset should no longer remove the Raid Milestone from some players.
On the Crucible side, Bungie has taken measures to prevent players from reaching areas they are not meant to be in--this includes the maps Eternity, Altar of Flame, Emperor's Respite, Legion's Gulch, Javelin-4, and The Dead Cliffs. The latter also sees a fix so that grenades will bounce properly on every set of stairs on the map.
Full patch notes for the update follow below. Servers coming back online and the update's release kicks off the start of Victory Week, which caps off the recent Faction Rallies event. You can also now try out the latest Nightfall Strike.

2K is shedding new light on how WWE 2K18's character customization, progression, and multiplayer will work, ahead of the game's release later this month. At its heart is the MyPlayer system, which will emphasise "player choice and a focused progression system" that you can also take into the multiplayer arena.
MyPlayer will allow you to highly customize your wrestler's appearance, weight class, height, attire, moves/taunts, and presentation (first with the help of a wizard, then allowing you to tweak looks and functionality through a highly detailed editor). It also allows you to define your wrestler's fighting style, which will determine the strengths and attributes you have when you enter the ring. The styles are:
High Flyer--Agility and Speed
Showboat--Stamina and Reversals
Striker--Striking and Stamina
Technician--Technique and Grappling
Brawler--Toughness and Athleticism
Strong Style--Grappling and Reversals
Powerhouse--Power and Grappling
Giant--Power and Toughness
Players will also upgrade their skills and moves over time, boosting attributes like Striking, Grappling, and Power. You'll earn loot crates throughout the game, which allow you to unlock Superstar parts and hundreds of new moves. Players earn crates by winning matches in the MyCareer mode or the multiplayer Road to Glory mode. Road to Glory features multiple match styles (accessible through matchmaking), including Tonight's Night, which changes the match type and arena every day.
Players are encouraged to level their wrestlers up and compete in Pay-Per-View events (that mirror real-world PPV matches). These multi-day events culminate in the Main Event, which players will have to qualify for and which pit you against WWE Superstars who are competing in the real-world event too. If you win, there's some major loot as a reward.
Throughout Road to Glory, you'll have the ability to equip up to five Boosts in a single match, which grant your wrestler different enhancements, buff stats, and give you extra XP. You can a full look at the new details on the game's website.
Cuphead is out now on Xbox One and PC, and one of the most intriguing things about the side-scrolling shooter is its art style, inspired by classic 1930s cartoons. Soon, the characters will be available in vinyl figure form too, as Funko plans to release a set next month. There's also an exclusive set available at New York Comic-Con.
The series' heroes, Cuphead and his brother Mugman, are available in 4" figures, but they're dwarfed by their nemesis (and the final boss in the game), The Devil, which stands at 6" tall. All three figures will be available in November.
There will also be a Funko exclusive at New York Comic-Con this year. At the event only, you can buy a special two-figure set featuring Cuphead and Mugman in black and white (check it out in the gallery below). As a sticker on the box notes, only 2,500 of the sets will be produced.
Cuphead was just released last week to a strong reception. GameSpot's Cuphead review gave it an 8/10 for its unique and intriguing art style, challenging gameplay, and diverse (albeit difficult) boss battles. "It's beautiful to look at, and with a pitch-perfect soundtrack, it flawlessly captures the era its developers so clearly revere," wrote reviewer Peter Brown.
"It's also an intense action game that pulls no punches. It could benefit from a few tweaks, and two-player co-op doesn't feel like the valuable addition you might imagine, but Cuphead remains a rare, unique game that truly stands out."
Destiny 2 players will have to find something else to occupy a few hours of their time today, October 3, as Bungie has taken Destiny 2's servers offline for scheduled maintenance. This will be followed by the release of a new hotfix update and the kickoff of Victory Week, which caps off the recent Faction Rallies event. " style="word-wrap: break-word;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;color: #6DC6DD;font-weight: normal;text-decoration: underline;">hotfix update 1.0.3.1 is live and a Faction Rallies winner has been announced. If you're having trouble signing in, Bungie recommends closing and re-opening the game.]
Maintenance began at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET / 4 PM BST / 1 AM AEST, at which point players were prevented from signing in. Those already online at the time can continue playing, but everyone will be booted offline at 9 AM PT, regardless of what you're doing. In other words, it's not an ideal time to try this week's Savathun's Song Nightfall Strike.
Bungie's schedule calls for maintenance to end at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET / 8 PM BST / 5 AM AEST. However, we've seen a number of maintenance periods in recent weeks last for longer than expected, so you may want to be prepared to wait until later than that before you're able to play. We'll report back with any developments.
Destiny 2's weekly reset has already occurred, introducing new weekly Milestones and the aforementioned Nightfall. However, Victory Week doesn't officially begin until after maintenance is concluded and hotfix update 1.0.3.1 has been released.
At that point, Bungie will announce which of the three factions emerged victorious from the weeklong Faction Rallies event. The winning faction will then offer its special weapon for sale--players can purchase it for 50,000 glimmer, or 1,000 if they were a member of that faction. This will be available for one week, during which time you can cash in any Faction Tokens you might still have in your inventory.
Star Wars Battlefront II's beta kicks off on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in only a few days, on October 6 (or October 4, if you pre-ordered the title before the month began). Ahead of its launch, EA has revealed all the modes and maps that players will be able to sample.
The Star Wars Battlefront II beta will consist of four modes, including Galactic Assault and Starfighter Assault. The former pits two teams of 20 players against each other in a large-scale battle as either a Clone trooper or Separatist droid. As in EA's live demonstration of the mode during E3, Galactic Assault will take place on the Naboo: Theed map during the beta. Starfighter Assault, meanwhile, is a 24-player space battle. In this mode, players will be able to try Battlefront II's three new starfighter classes and pilot Hero Ships from the prequel, original, and new Star Wars trilogies.
The remaining two modes featured in the beta are Strike and Arcade. The former is a class-based mode that doesn't feature any heroes. Players will have to use the unique abilities of their class to work together and complete objectives. During the beta, Strike takes place on Takodana. Arcade is Battlefront II's offline mode for one to two players. It is set on Naboo and features two options: a team battle with AI allies and enemies, and a one-vs.-many battle in which players take on a wave of foes.
The Star Wars Battlefront II beta runs until October 9. EA says that the Battlefront II beta is "among the biggest" the publisher has ever offered and warns players that downloading and installing it will take some time. EA has also outlined the beta's minimum and recommended specs for those planning to play on PC.
GameSpot and CNET have teamed up to give you a chance to win an SNES Classic Editionfor free! Two (2) winners will be chosen after the competition ends on Sunday, October 15th at 11:59PM PT. Entry is open to legal residents of the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada; void where prohibited.

After a private beta, PS4's big 5.0 update is now available for everyone. In short, there are few huge features included in the update, but lots of small improvements that should improve the system's functionality overall. The patch weighs in at 375 MB, and it's mandatory to install--just turn your PS4 on and the update should begin downloading automatically.
Some of the enhancements center around streaming using the PS4's built-in broadcasting capabilities. PS4 Pro users will be able to stream in 1080p and 60 FPS, provided their connection is strong enough, and PSVR users will be able to see new messages and comments coming through while broadcasting. PSVR is also adding 5.1ch and 7.1ch virtual surround sound support.
Next up, the PS4's Friends List is being updated with greater management tools, such as the ability to set up separate lists of friends. You'll be able to create a list of all the people you play Destiny with and send them all an invite, for example. This feature replaces the old Favorite Groups tab.
In another move to help reduce the amount of time spent in menus, the Quick Menu is being updated to have more options. For example, you'll be able to check on download progress and see new party invites. You can also leave a party from within that menu and see your current Spotify playlist.
Notifications are also being improved when watching films and TV, as you can now disable messages and other notification pop-ups while watching media. You can also change how much of a message is displayed, as well as its color, when playing or watching any form of content.
Finally, Parental Control features are being overhauled in favor of what Sony calls "Family on PSN." This replaces the old Master/Sub account system; instead, one user is deemed the Family Manager, and they can set up other accounts and appoint them as a Parent/Guardian, Adult, or Child. Parents or Guardians can restrict Child accounts in their "use of online features and communication with other players, set restrictions for games, restrict the use of the internet browser, and set spending limits for PlayStation Store."
In the beta, Sony stated people setting up an Adult account for the first time would be charged $0.50 "to verify that you are an adult." It's unclear whether that requirement has been dropped, but it is not mentioned in the final update's patch notes, which you can see below.
In other PlayStation news, Sony revealed a new PSVR model just yesterday. The updated version contains a streamlined cable layout and the ability to watch HDR content on your TV without having to disconnect the PSVR's processor unit. No release date has been revealed for the new PSVR model, though the price will remain the same.

Star Wars Battlefront II is out soon on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and the beta starts even sooner. We've already played some of what's on offer in the public beta, and so far we're impressed.
A number of modes are included in the beta, the first of which is called Arcade Mode. This can be played solo or in split-screen on consoles, offering a variety of challenges while also serving as a training ground to hone your skills and practice with new weapons or loadouts before jumping into online matches. Check out some gameplay of the split-screen portion below.
Strike is a smaller, objective-based mode with two teams of eight players. It focuses more on infantry (and less on vehicles or heroes) than the other modes seen in the game but still gives players their own powerful trooper loadouts to be earned by gunning down the enemy. We played a mission from the Star Wars: Force Awakens/The Last Jedi era in which the Rebels had to hold Maz's castle and prevent The First Order from retrieving an artifact and delivering it to their transport.
Galactic Assault, meanwhile, is a huge 20v20 mode. Objectives and maps evolve as the match progresses, with players earning points that can be redeemed to call in iconic vehicles, classes, and heroes. The map we played was based on Naboo, tasking Clone Troopers with defending the palace from waves of Separatist droids. Our mission was to take out the troop transport vehicle and hold the palace until the end of the game. Take a look at some galactic assault gameplay below.
Finally, in Starfighter Assault, squadrons of Rebel and Imperial fighters, bombers, interceptors, and hero ships battle among the twinkling stars of space. Matches are, once again, objective-based--the mission we played had the Rebels trying to break through Imperial blockades to destroy a docked Star Destroyer, with The Empire defending by shooting down waves of Y-wing bombers.
We have gameplay of all four modes in the video at the top of this article, so check it out and let us know what you think of Star Wars Battlefront II--which launches on November 17--in the comments below.
Today marks the first Tuesday of October, and that means Sony has launched the month's lineup of PlayStation Plus freebies. PS Plus members can now download six more free games across PS4, PS3, and Vita.
PS4 owners actually get a total of four games in October, as both Vita games--Hue and Sky Force Anniversary--support Cross-Buy. PS3 owners, meanwhile, get a total of three; Cross-Buy brings them Sky Force in addition to Hustle Kings and Monster Jam Battlegrounds.
If you haven't already claimed the bonus free game That's You, it leaves PS Plus on October 24; PSVR game RIGS is free until November 7. An additional bonus will be introduced in October for Plus members, as they'll get closed beta access to Hand of the Gods, the spin-off of Smite. Until November 14, you can also get a free Plus Pack that consists of a special Galactic Invader Leader skin for Ah Puch, a card back, a player icon, and five Core Packs.
October's free PS Plus games are available now. You can grab them through the respective systems or on the PlayStation Store website.
Rockstar has rolled out the latest update for Grand Theft Auto V. This week, GTA Online players can pick up yet another new aircraft and take part in a new Adversary mode, Stockpile.
Stockpile is described as a "jet-fueled take on capture-the-flag." The mode supports two to four teams and up to 16 players, all of whom are piloting aircraft equipped with machine guns and missiles. The object of Stockpile is to snag as much loot as you can and bring it back to your base; the team with the largest haul by the end of the round will be declared the winner. To commemorate Stockpile's launch, players can earn double GTA$ and RP from the mode until October 9.
Also available now is the new Mammoth Mogul. This heavily armed plane comes outfitted with a .50 caliber turret and a front-facing machine gun, and it can be upgraded with additional features like jet-assisted takeoff and a bay for explosives. You can purchase a Mammoth Mogul from Warstock Cache & Carry.
Continuing the aerial theme, this week's batch of discounts revolves primarily around aircraft. For a limited time, players can get 25% off of the following items and upgrades:
Hangar Workshop
Engine Upgrades (all vehicles)
Armor Upgrades (all vehicles)
Aircraft Handling Upgrades

Fall 2017 will see a rush of big releases, and many of those are coming during October. With Bethesda releasing The Evil Within 2 and Wolfenstein II in the span of two weeks, Destiny 2 making its much anticipated debut on PC, Nintendo launching Super Mario Odyssey, and Ubisoft launching its next big release for the Assassin's Creed series--October is going to be a heavy month for gaming. Here's a quick run-through of what you can expect in the month of October, along with its most notable releases.
The Evil Within 2 (PS4, Xbox One, PC) -- October 13
As the sequel to 2014's mind-bending and gory action-horror game, The Evil Within 2 aims to up the ante in the realm of nightmares, while also expanding its scope in numerous ways. Coming from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, the sequel takes a more adventurous approach to its levels, with the lead character Sebastian traversing through derelict towns and facilities filled with creatures that will push his mental state to its limits.
After many years of fans clamoring for a PC release of the popular shared world shooter, Bungie is set to release the game on a brand new platform. Running on Blizzard's Battle.net, Destiny 2 take advantage of a number of sophisticated online systems, along with a sizable upgrade from its console brother--now running at well over 60 FPS and at 4K resolution. Many players who have sunk hundreds of hours in the console version are ready to jump ship for the PC--and considering how it plays, it's not too hard to see why.
Assassin's Creed Origins (PS4, Xbox One, PC) -- October 27
After a yearlong hiatus for the Assassin's Creed series, Ubisoft is ready to unveil its next big entry for the franchise--which plans to rethink the formula for its new setting. Taking place in Ancient Egypt, you'll take on the role of Bayek, an Assassin who will go on to form the early foundations of the Assassin brotherhood. In a more expansive and reactive world, Origins is seeking to bring the series out of its comfort zone, and into a broader space that will push players to learn the mysteries of Egypt, while getting in a few sneaky kills along the way.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (PS4, Xbox One, PC) -- October 27
Bringing its alternate-history mythos to the USA, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus features Nazis palling around with the KKK in Middle America--which may feel a bit too real in our present times. Series lead B.J. Blazkowicz will reform North America's resistance and take the fight to the Nazi regime, all while dual wielding rapid-fire shotguns and riding on top of fire-breathing robot dogs. Catharsis is the name of the game in Wolfenstein II, and along with a Switch release coming soon, there will be plenty of opportunities to unleash against the Nazi horde.
With the breakout success of the Switch, the developers at Nintendo are prepping the release of the crown jewel of their company with Super Mario Odyssey. As Mario embarks on a globe-trotting ride around various kingdoms, cities, and worlds seemingly made of candy, the nimble plumber will use his new hat-possession ability to take control of the many characters and objects scattered around these unique locations. There's much to see in Super Mario Odyssey, and with a focus on offering a large swath of spaces to explore, it's looking as if it'll be a really fun ride.
NetherRealm Studios has released new DLC for its latest superhero fighting game, Injustice 2. As previously announced, it's headlined by a mainstay from NetherRealm's other fighting game series, Mortal Kombat: the lightning god Raiden.
Raiden arrives in Injustice 2 today for anyone who has purchased Fighter Pack #2 or the game's Ultimate or Digital Deluxe editions. NetherRealm notes that his release comes just a few days before the 25th anniversary of the Mortal Kombat series, which debuted back on October 8, 1992.
In addition to Raiden, today's DLC drop includes a new Premiere Skin--those that serve as complete makeovers, essentially transforming a member of the roster into a different character. This one turns Raiden into Black Lightning, the DC superhero who also happens to have a new TV show on the way.
Raiden's release comes not long after a new update, which prepared the game for his launch and made a variety of bug fixes and other changes. These included balance adjustments to characters such as Superman, as well as tweaks to Legendary items and Legendary Multiverse Events. You can check out more in the Injustice 2 update 1.09 patch notes.
Like the first one, Fighter Pack #2 consists of three characters in total. Raiden is the second one to be released, following Black Manta; Hellboy is still on the way. He will be followed by three more characters in Fighter Pack #3, though we don't yet have any indication of who will be included.
The Nintendo Switch version of Stardew Valley finally has a release date, and it's coming sooner than you might expect. The popular farming sim launches in the Switch Eshop rather fittingly on the date of this year's harvest moon, October 5.
The Switch version of Stardew Valley has been a long time coming. The game was originally planned to release for Wii U, but last November publisher Chucklefish announced that version would be cancelled and moved instead to Nintendo's then-forthcoming console. The most recent news we heard about the Switch version was that it went into testing back in August.
The Switch port of Stardew Valley was developed by Sickhead Games and retails for $15 / £11. It will also be the first console version to receive the game's multiplayer update, which will allow players to share their farm with up to three friends. Chucklefish has said it plans to begin beta testing the multiplayer update on PC later this year; it will launch for that platform in early 2018 and come to Switch and then other consoles after that.
Stardew Valley is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game has earned much acclaim from both fans and critics. GameSpot awarded it a 9/10 in our Stardew Valley review and called it "a game that tugs at your curiousity as often as it does your heart."
Here's something cool and unexpected: 2005's Star Wars: Battlefront II now has online multiplayer support after losing the feature years ago. GOG, the online PC store operated by The Witcher studio CD Projekt Red, announced today that multiplayer support has been restored. And that's not all. There is now cross-play support with Battlefront II on GOG and Steam, so that should ideally help players find matches faster.
This long-awaited feature finally brings the entire Star Wars Battlefront II community together, no matter which part of the galaxy you come from, so go ahead and jump into the fray," GOG announced (via PC Gamer). In its own statement on Steam, Disney said about the multiplayer restoration, "Now you can draft your friends to the 501st legion and join up to 64 other players in a heated online battle for control of the galaxy."
In May 2014, GameSpy multiplayer servers shut down, rendering numerous games' online modes unplayable, including Battlefront II's. If you don't already own the game, it's marked down to just $5 right now on GOG. Steam is offering it for $10.
The next Battlefront game is ... Battlefront II. The game launches in November for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but everyone can try it beginning this week through its open beta. Unlike the first game, the sequel has a single-player campaign, in addition to content and characters from all Star Wars eras.
Making and maintaining a game like Overwatch is no easy task. But even something like discussing the game in public can be a challenge for a variety of reasons, a subject that Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan recently discussed in a lengthy forum post.
Kaplan shared his thoughts in a thread where players--citing the lack of forum posts from Blizzard developers--questioned if the Overwatch team has enough people on it. According to Kaplan, the development team has grown from 70 at launch in May 2016 to just over 100 now. "Even though I wouldn't say we're necessarily a 'small' team as modern development standards go, we're certainly not an overly large team either," he said.
"We view ourselves as artists and craftspeople and we like to avoid that feeling of being 'cogs in a large machine.' We like the fact that we own Overwatch together as a unified team with a shared, collective vision. There is not one person--or select people--who dictates what we do. We're not peons of some visionary--just implementing his or her vision--and we're certainly not beholden to any corporate 'overlords' telling us what we can or cannot do. We are 100+ game developers who absolutely love playing and making Overwatch."
Kaplan admitted that the team has made mistakes but noted that Blizzard tries to speak directly with fans using their real names, rather than using aliases or communicating through community managers. "And if you'll allow me to speak openly for a moment--it's scary," he said.
"Overall, the community is awesome to us. But there are some pretty mean people out there. All of our developers are free to post on these forums. Very few of us actually do because it's extremely intimidating and/or time consuming. It's very easy to post the wrong thing and make a 'promise' to the community that no one intended to make. Once we say we're working on something, we're not allowed to 'take it back.' It's set in stone.
"Also, because we are open with you and do not hide behind an anonymous handle (like all of you have the luxury of doing), we oftentimes get personally attacked and threatened. Most great developers I know just love being heads down making or playing games. The 'public speaking/posting' part of the job is downright scary and intimidating. It often feels like there is no winning. As a result, there are a small few of us who do most of the posting here."
"It's not exactly what I would call a safe environment for creative people to openly express their thoughts and feelings."
You can read Kaplan's post in full here. He also recently discussed the subject of dealing with toxicity in the game itself, which he stated has slowed development on Overwatch.
Although he doesn't state it explicitly, Kaplan's latest post feels like a call for players to remember that developers are human beings who don't have unlimited resources. "If we post, 'We're talking about Mercy,' immediately there is an expectation that she is going to be radically changed in the next patch when the truth is, we might just leave her how she is for a while," he said. "We're not allowed to post that here without our bosses (and I am talking literally here) receiving emails from some of you demanding we be fired. It's not exactly what I would call a safe environment for creative people to openly express their thoughts and feelings."
October is here, and that means we'll soon have a new selection of free PlayStation Plus games to download. Sony has announced the lineup for next month, and it's an impressive one thanks to the headliner, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. " style="word-wrap: break-word;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;color: #6DC6DD;font-weight: normal;text-decoration: underline;">October's free PS Plus games are now available.]
Thanks to Cross-Buy, those on PS4 will get a total of four games: Both Vita titles, Hue and Sky Force Anniversary, can be played on the handheld or PS4. And even PS3 owners get a bonus, as Sky Force supports Cross-Buy with the older console as well. That joins Hustle Kings and Monster Jam Battlegrounds as the standard PS3 games for the month.
All six of these games will be available beginning on Tuesday, October 3. You'll have until November 7 to claim them, but time is running out to grab September's free PS Plus games, which return to their regular prices on October 3. Additionally, if you haven't already grabbed the bonus game That's You, it leaves PS Plus on October 24. PSVR game RIGS also remains free until November 7.
Another bonus offer will be introduced in October for Plus members, as they'll get closed beta access to Hand of the Gods, the spin-off of Smite. Until November 14, they're also entitled to a free Plus Pack that consists of a special Galactic Invader Leader skin for Ah Puch, a card back, a player icon, and five Core Packs.
Bungie has rolled out the latest weekly reset for Destiny 2, which soon see some server downtime and the release of a new 1.0.3.1 update. Among other things, the weekly reset means a new Nightfall is now available, complete with another set of modifiers, Challenges, and rewards.
This week's Nightfall Strike is Savathun's Song. As always in Destiny 2, you'll have to rush to finish, as a time limit is in place. But whereas last week's Nightfall featured a modifier that didn't permit you to extend the time limit, one of the modifiers this time around is Timewarp - Anomalies. Throughout the Strike, you'll encounter floating objects that can be destroyed, with each one providing an additional 30 seconds for you to make it to the final boss and defeat it.
The other active modifier is Momentum (which was to be used in an earlier Nightfall but had to be replaced because it was broken). When you stand still, neither your health nor shields will regenerate, which means taking cover like you normally might isn't a viable strategy. Instead, you'll want to consider sprinting, which actually increases the rate of your recovery.
There are again three Challenges, the first of which is the returning Speed Of Dark; this tasks you with finishing the Nightfall with at least five minutes on the clock, which may require taking out most or all of the anomalies you encounter. Unbroken requires completion of the Nightfall with fewer than three deaths. And The Best Defense asks you to shoot down 15 projectiles before defeating Savathun's Song.
Completion of the Nightfall rewards players with Powerful Gear rewards. This is one of the few activities to offer those, and they're among the best items you can get your hands on. It's also a reliable way to increase your Power level past 265, should you be struggling to pass that point. If you haven't made it to that point, you may want to consider waiting until after you've raised your Power level before grabbing the Nightfall reward. This Nightfall will be available until the next weekly reset, which occurs at 2 AM PT / 5 AM ET / 10 AM BST / 4 PM AEST on Tuesday, October 10.
If you haven't yet unlocked the Nightfall, you'll need to complete two Strikes and approach the suggested Power level of 240 before Zavala will allow you to take part in them. Traditional matchmaking is not available, but in its place we have Guided Games, providing players with the opportunity to be matched up with members of a clan for the mission (which requires a Nightfall Ticket). Alternatively, clan members can sign up to serve as guides through the Nightfall, and doing so does not require a Ticket.
Destiny 2's servers will be taken offline today as part of the deployment of the game's next hotfix update. " style="word-wrap: break-word;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;color: #6DC6DD;font-weight: normal;text-decoration: underline;">Destiny 2 servers are now down.] Here's what you need to know about the downtime:
Servers for PS4 and Xbox One are going offline on Tuesday, October 3.
At 8 AM PT, you won't be able to sign in.
At 9 AM PT, all players will be removed from the game--even if you're in the middle of an activity--so plan accordingly.
Maintenance is expected to end at 12 PM PT.
Bungie also warned players that it may bring back the server queue after the maintenance period, presumably because a flood of players will be trying to log in at the same time.
This maintenance period and downtime is for hotfix 1.0.3.1. This update fixes a range of problems, one of which is pretty serious: players could get stuck in a loop when they were continuously killed and/or unable to respawn in some conditions. Check out GameSpot's additional coverage here to see the full update 1.0.3.1. patch notes.
Although this year's Transformers: The Last Knight was not as successful as the previous movies in the blockbuster franchise, there are still more Transformers films on the way. Next up will be Bumblebee, a spin-off that is currently in production and arrives next year. It has now been reported that the iconic VW Beetle will be joined by another familiar character from the Transformers universe--Optimus Prime.
In an interview with CineMovie (via SlashFilm), actor Peter Cullen confirmed that he is involved with the movie. While Cullen hasn't categorically stated that he is to play Prime, it is a good bet given he has voiced the character since the 1980s TV show.
Bumblebee hits theaters on December 21, 2018 and stars Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), alongside WWE star John Cena. The cast also includes Jorge Lendeborg (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Jason Drucker (Diary of Wimpy Kid), Ricardo Hoyos (The Belko Experiment), and Gracie Dzienny (Chasing Life).
The film is directed by Travis Knight. Although it is Knight's live-action debut, he helmed last year's Oscar-nominated animated movie Kubo And The Two Strings, and as president of the Laika animation studio he has overseen such acclaimed movies as Boxtrolls, ParaNorman, and Coraline.
In a recent interview with Screenrant, Transformers produdcer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura explained that Bumblebee would be different in tone from the main movies in the franchise. "It's a more intimate movie," he said. "It's a little bit like Iron Giant which I worked on many years ago. It's a smaller story but it's still about these larger issues, the same sort of titanic clashes occur.
"But it's a female lead, the relationship she and Bumblebee develop is very different than what we've seen before. And so I think people are going to love the intimacy of that movie in contrast to some of the big [moments]."
In related news, in August it was confirmed that a new animated Transformers movie is in development. Hasbro, which owns the rights to the property, stated that the movie will be part of the cinematic universe. There is currently no release date for the film.
The Star Wars Battlefront II beta is starting soon. Now, EA has announced more details about the PC version specifically, revealing its minimum and recommended requirements. Starting off, you'll need 15 GB of hard drive space to install the beta client. As for the rest of the requirements, you can see them below, as posted on EA's website recently.
Minimum PC System requirements:
OS: 64-bit Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10
Online Connection Requirements: 512 KBPS or faster Internet connection
Hard-drive space: 15 GB
Given that Battlefront II is only in a beta state, it's possible that the final PC requirements will change for the full release. We'll report back with more details as they become available.
The Battlefront II beta runs October 6-9 on PC, as well as Xbox One and PlayStation 4. People who pre-order can get in two days early, beginning on October 4.
Progress from the beta does not carry forward to the full game. This is often the case with betas--for EA games and others. For Battlefront II specifically, EA said, "We want everyone to start on a level playing field at launch, whether they have been able to take part in the beta or not, so we're resetting all progress after the beta."
A new trailer for Battlefront II released this week showed off how much more content the game has compared to its 2015 predecessor. The video is narrated by Star Wars actor John Boyega, and you can watch it right here.
There is a problem with Destiny 2's raid system whereby raid keys for the Leviathan challenge are getting removed from players' inventories. That's a problem. Bungie is aware of this and has now explained what's caused the issue and what can be done to avoid it.
There are two situations that Bungie has found to cause this problem, the first is that you'll lose your raid keys when signing in with an alternate character if that character previously had not been signed in since the latest weekly reset. The other instance where you can lose your raid keys is if you earn a raid key and then create a new character.
To prevent the issue, Bungie advises players to sign in with each of their characters in the game or inspect all of them through the Destiny companion app before clearing checkpoints in the Leviathan raid after the reset. Obviously, this is not ideal. So you may be happy to learn that Bungie is working on a more permanent solution for this issue.
Another thing to note is that all of your Leviathan raid progress gets reset every week alongside the weekly reset that impacts the entire game.
New York Comic-Con is happening this weekend, and Marvel is using the event to promote no fewer than four of its upcoming TV shows. New seasons of Agents of SHIELD, Jessica Jones, Cloak and Dagger, and Runaways are all in the works, and to mark this, the studio has released some seriously stylish NYCC-exclusive posters.
As you'd expect from a comic convention launch, all the posters are illustrated, emphasising each property's printed origins. Check them out in the gallery below:
The four shows are all hitting different channels. Agents Of SHIELD enters its fifth season on ABC this winter, while Season 2 of Jessica Jones is expected on Netflix in 2018. The first seasons of Cloak and Dagger and Runaways, meanwhile, will premiere on Freeform and Hulu respectively. Runaways arrives on November 21, with Cloak and Dagger due next year.
In related news, the first season of The Punisher is also expected to hit Netflix soon. Following a series of viral teasers, the first full trailer for the highly anticipated show was revealed last month.
GameSpot will be at NYCC this weekend, so keep checking back for the latest news and galleries.
The DC superhero team up Justice Leaguearrives in theaters next month, and a new set of promotional posters has been released. The movie will see Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and The Flash team up to fight the evil Steppenwolf. These new posters deliver some stylish, colourful profile shots of the five heroes. Check them out in the gallery below:
In August, it was reported that the reshoots would lighten Justice League's tone. According to actor Joe Morton, who plays Cyborg's dad, "the film felt too dark." He said: "What I heard was that there was a need from the studio to lighten up the film in a way."
Justice League also stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as Flash, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. It hits theaters on November 17, 2017.
It's been known for some time that Sony is looking to reboot Men in Black, and last year it was reported that the next movie in the hit sci-fi comedy franchise would in fact be a crossover with Jump Street films. However, it has now been reported that a new Men in Black is indeed in the works but that it will have nothing to do with Jump Street.
According to Deadline, Sony is fast-tracking the movie and has set a release of May 17, 2019. Although Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not reprise their starring roles from the three original movies, the new film will be set in the same universe as those; it won't simply be a remake of the 1997 original.
The movie will have a script from Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, who previously wrote Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight. Deadline states that the pair have "have scripted a contemporary sci-fi pic about the black-clad secret force that protects earth from the alien scum of the universe, focusing on new characters chasing villains that put the picture on more of a global scale than the two previous films."
All three original Men in Black movies were big box-office hits. Although the third movie was not as well received critically as the first two, it still made $624 million at the worldwide box office. In total, the whole series has made more than $1.6 billion.
If Destiny 2 is your first Destiny game, or you simply didn't play much of the original, one thing you may be unaware of is how certain parts of the game run on a schedule. By now, you may have noticed that certain things reset daily, but more significant are the those that happen on a weekly basis--the aptly named weekly reset.
A number of activities--and their corresponding rewards--are tied to the weekly reset. In other words, once you complete them, you'll have to wait for the following week in order to complete them again for a new set of rewards. (Among other things, that includes the Nightfall, a high-level Strike that offers some of the consistently best loot you can get your hands on.) It also means you always want to be sure those activities are finished before the weekly reset occurs.
The reset happens at a fixed time, not a week after you complete any given activity. As listed on Bungie's help site, the daily "Ritual" reset occurs at 2 AM PT / 5 AM ET / 10 AM BST / 7 PM AEST during Daylight Saving Time (March to November) and an hour earlier when we're not in DST (November to March). The weekly reset happens at that same time each Tuesday.
Each Tuesday's reset therefore serves as the deadline to finish the Nightfall, Meditations, and the Raid. It's also when certain Milestones are refreshed, including weekly Challenges, the Flashpoint, Clan XP, and Crucible's Call to Arms, as well as Clan XP rewards. Additionally, the Eververse inventory of items that can be purchased with Bright Dust changes then.
Amazon Prime subscribers can look forward to lots of new offerings this October. The streaming service is launching the third season of its comedy Red Oaks and, for anyone who's in the mood for a scare this Halloween season, Amazon's own Lore premieres.
