Grab A Great PC Game For Free From The Humble Store Right Now

By Anonymous on Sep 15, 2017 12:09 am

If Psychonauts is not already part of your PC game library, you can add it free of charge right now. The Humble Store is giving away the Double Fine game for free, but you'll have to act quickly to claim your copy.

Grabbing the game is as simple as adding it to your cart--do so here--and checking out. You'll need a Humble account in order to do so, but you can sign up for free if you don't already have one. The game is redeemable on Steam, which you'll also need in order to play. Psychonauts will remain free until 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET / 6 PM BST on Saturday, September 16.

Psychonauts is one of the most beloved games in Double Fine's catalog. It's an action-adventure game in which you play as a young psychic who explores the minds of other characters, which serve as the game's various worlds. It was originally released back in 2005 to a good deal of acclaim before being updated on Steam in 2011 with features like cloud save support.

A sequel was announced back in 2015 and was successfully crowdfunded. We saw new Psychonauts 2 gameplay footage earlier this year, and it's due out in 2018. Earlier this year, we also got a VR spin-off, Psychonauts in The Rhombus of Ruin.

Rocket League's Next Big Update Arrives This Month, Here's What It Adds

By Anonymous on Sep 14, 2017 11:40 pm

The next update for Rocket League is just around the corner. The game's Autumn Update arrives on September 28 and introduces new items, player banners, and a new seasonal arena, among other features.

The seasonal arena is called the Farmstead, and like its name implies, it's an autumn-themed map set in the middle of a farm. It'll be available in Competitive, Casual, and Private matches following the update, but it'll only be around for a limited time this fall. You can see screenshots of the arena below.

In addition to the season arena, the Autumn Update introduces standard arena versions of Wasteland and Starbase Arc. The classic versions of both will remain available for Private and offline matches. A new customization option in the form of player banners will be added to the game as well. Players will also have a chance to snag 90 free customization options, which will be available as Uncommon, Rare, and Very Rare drops after online matches.

Finally, Rocket League's Autumn Update adds a few new features, including limited-time events and transparent goalposts. The PC version will also receive LAN support, and PC players will be able to beta test the game's new Party and Tournament systems following the update. You can read more about the Autumn Update on the Rocket League website.

Rocket League is currently available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game will arrive on Nintendo Switch this holiday season and will include cool-looking exclusive cars based on the Mario and Metroid series.

You Can Physically See Destiny 2's Leviathan Raid In Orbit From One Of Its Planets

By Anonymous on Sep 14, 2017 10:52 pm

It didn't take especially long for the first group to beat Destiny 2's new Leviathan Raid. For most players, it's a challenge that will persist for weeks or months, but whatever the case, it's now a permanent part of the game. Even if you're not prepared to jump into the Raid anytime soon, its addition does have a cool, albeit minor impact on all players.

The Raid is accessed through the Director by selecting an icon for the Leviathan, which is located near Nessus. But its proximity to Nessus on that screen is also representative of its in-game location: As seen in the images below, when you're on the surface on Nessus now, you can actually look up and see the Leviathan in the sky. You can't physically access it, but seeing it there adds a neat bit of presence to something that could have easily be confined to the Director screen and nothing more.

If you're feeling up to the challenge of the Raid, you can check out our Leviathan Raid guide for tips and a walkthrough, including some weapon recommendations. Those who are not quite at that level yet can also try out the latest Nightfall Strike, which provides another good opportunity to secure the Rat King Exotic sidearm. The Guided Games feature was introduced this week in beta, providing an in-game way to form a Fireteam for tackling the Nightfall.

Nintendo Switch Eshop Adds Six New Games Today

By Anonymous on Sep 14, 2017 10:27 pm

It's a fairly busy week for Nintendo Switch. Following the release of Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition on September 12, another six new games have now been added to the console's Eshop today, with two more slated to arrive tomorrow.

As usual, today's batch of releases includes a new ACA Neo Geo title: SpinMaster, a cartoony beat-'em-up originally released in 1993. The game allows up to two players to play together as Johnny and Tom, who must use a variety of different weapons (including a yo-yo) to fight their way through side-scrolling stages and stop the mad scientist Dr. De Playne. Like all other ACA Neo Geo games, SpinMaster carries a price tag of $8/£6.29.

Also available today is Semispheres, a split-screen "parallel puzzle game" that has you controlling two characters simultaneously to work through puzzles. It retails for $10. Beyond that is Quest of Dungeons ($9/£8), a dungeon crawler with retro visuals and permadeath. Rounding out today's new releases are 36 Fragments of Midnight ($3/£3), a stylish, procedurally-generated platformer; Kingdom: New Lands ($15/£13.49), a unique side-scrolling simulation/strategy game; and the kart racer Beach Buggy Racing ($10/£10).

There are other titles still on the way to Switch soon. Tomorrow, September 15, sees the release of Robonauts, a side-scrolling action game that has players switching gravity to jump between planets and blast foes. The game typically retails for $15, but those who pick it up in the next two weeks can get it for a discounted $13.49. Meanwhile, basketball fans will be able to play the newest installment in 2K Sports' popular basketball series, NBA 2K18, also on September 15.

Nintendo also released a number of free updates and demos for Switch and 3DS following yesterday's Direct presentation, including a demo of Square Enix's beautiful Switch-exclusive RPG, Project Octopath Traveler. You can find a roundup of the other major news, videos, and release dates from the broadcast here.

Six More Xbox One Backwards Compatible Games Now Available

By Anonymous on Sep 14, 2017 09:52 pm

Whether you're looking for a break from Destiny 2, not enamored with this week's new Xbox One games, or simply want to boot up an older game, today's a good day. Following a period with few new games added, Microsoft has announced several more additions to the Xbox One's backwards compatibility library.

A total of six Xbox 360 games have been added to the list today, although one of these, Virtual-On, is only supported in Japan. For those elsewhere in the world, there's still plenty to check out, including Saints Row: The Third, arguably the best game in the series; horror game Slender: The Arrival; arcade classic Super Contra; Monopoly Deal, a fast-paced adaptation of the board game; and Undertow, which was offered as a freebie back in 2008 following extended Xbox Live issues.

All of these games are now playable on Xbox One. If you already own them, you can either pop in the disc or browse to the Ready to Download area of the My Games and Apps section to download it. Alternatively, you can buy them straight from the Xbox Store and start playing.

These are the first new backwards compatible games since last month, when several Walking Dead games were made playable on Xbox One. For a full roundup, check out our full list of Xbox One backwards compatible games.

Overwatch Development Has Been Slowed Due To Need To Address "Rising Tide Of Toxicity"

By Anonymous on Sep 14, 2017 08:53 pm

Blizzard has posted the newest "Developer Update" video for Overwatch, and this one is not like the rest. In this video, titled "Play Nice, Play Fair," game director Jeff Kaplan talks extensively about Blizzard's reaction to the "rising tide of toxicity or bad behaviour in the game" and what the studio is doing to help make Overwatch a more welcoming place.

Starting off, Kaplan pointed out that the player-reporting tools that were already available on PC are now on console. The tools are not perfect, he acknowledged, but it's a first step. Kaplan also spoke more broadly about poor behaviour in Overwatch, saying Blizzard has taken action against more than 480,000 accounts since the game launched in May 2016. 340,000 of those were a direct result of the player-reporting system, Kaplan said.

Whatever Blizzard does to improve the experience, there will never be a sudden fix for bad behaviour. "There is not going to be a moment where we have a magic patch in Overwatch that makes bad behaviour go away," Kaplan explained. "But it is a continual process that we are very dedicated to fixing and improving."

Kaplan added that Blizzard doesn't plan to create "naughty pools" as some games do, where offending players aren't banned altogether but put in a pool with other jerks. "Our highest level philosophy is, 'If you are a bad person doing bad things in Overwatch, we don't want you in Overwatch," he said. "Overwatch should be an inclusive game space."

Generally speaking, Kaplan said he thinks the toxicity problem is worse in video games because there is an element of anonymity when you're sitting behind a keyboard or holding a controller in some far-away room than where your teammates or foes are. He gave the example of if you were driving in your car and someone cut you off, you might curse them out. But if you actually met them and had an issue face-to-face, you might not be so aggressive or mean.

While Blizzard will take steps to stem the tide of toxicity in Overwatch, Kaplan stressed that players, too, must "take a deep look inward" and think about if they could be nicer. He also pointed out that creating systems in Overwatch that combat toxicity takes time away from actual game development. So if you want Blizzard to release more new features/maps/characters/whatever and faster, stop being a jerk, basically.

"The bad behaviour not just ruining the experience for one another, but the bad behaviour is actually making the game progress in terms of development at a much slower rate," Kaplan said, acknowledging that he, too, has been guilty of being mean to people online.

How do you feel about the level of toxicity and bad behaviour in Overwatch? Let us know in the comments below!

Special Call Of Duty: WW2 PS4 System Features Camo Design And Green Controller

By Anonymous on Sep 14, 2017 08:32 pm

To coincide with the release of Call of Duty: WWII, Sony has announced that it will release a new limited-edition version of the PlayStation 4 later this year. It features a camouflage design and a matching controller.

The Call of Duty: WWII PS4 bundle includes a system that sports a traditional camo design, with a PlayStation logo and a variety of DualShock silhouettes hidden in the pattern (but no boots on the ground that I can detect). The console comes with a 1 TB hard drive and is paired with a two-tone green controller that matches the camo. In addition to the system itself, you'll also receive a copy of Call of Duty: WWI; Sony hasn't yet specified if this is a physical or digital copy, although bundles tend to include the latter.

Pre-orders for the bundle go online today, and it will then launch alongside the game on November 3. It's priced at $300 in the US and $380 in Canada; further international pricing has not been announced, though we do know the bundle is coming to Europe. Additionally, those in Europe who purchase the bundle will receive some in-game content: the Divisions pack, Nazi Zombies pack, and a weapon unlock Token. In Europe, Sony will also offer bundles with the game and the standard black PS4 and PS4 Pro models.

Call of Duty: WWII launches on November 3 and, like recent games in the series, will feature timed exclusive content. That means DLC packs will launch on PS4 30 days before they arrive on PC or Xbox One.

PS4 System Update 4.74 Out, Here's What It Does (Very Little)

By Anonymous on Sep 14, 2017 08:06 pm

Anyone booting up their PlayStation 4 today will find that a new system update is now available. Unfortunately, this is not the next big update and is instead one that introduces no new user-facing features.

The 340 MB update, which brings the PS4's system software to version 4.74, lists only one upgrade in its notes, stating that it "improves system performance." That phrasing is slightly different from that of previous small updates, which reported that they "improve[d] the quality of the system performance." Whether there's anything to be read into that remains to be seen, but the bottom line either way is that you shouldn't start up your system expecting any major new features to be introduced.

A number of users have reported crashes when playing Destiny 2 on PS4 and PS4 Pro in particular since its launch last week. As of yet, there's no indication if this update will have any impact on those problems.

There are new features on the way to PS4 in the near future. Sony has already detailed the forthcoming PS4 5.0 update, which entered beta testing in August. Among other things, it provides the option for higher quality streaming on PS4 Pro, adds a new Group feature to the friends list, brings new information to the Quick Menu, and revamps parental controls.
