If Psychonauts is not already part of your PC game library, you can add it free of charge right now. The Humble Store is giving away the Double Fine game for free, but you'll have to act quickly to claim your copy.
Grabbing the game is as simple as adding it to your cart--do so here--and checking out. You'll need a Humble account in order to do so, but you can sign up for free if you don't already have one. The game is redeemable on Steam, which you'll also need in order to play. Psychonauts will remain free until 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET / 6 PM BST on Saturday, September 16.
Psychonauts is one of the most beloved games in Double Fine's catalog. It's an action-adventure game in which you play as a young psychic who explores the minds of other characters, which serve as the game's various worlds. It was originally released back in 2005 to a good deal of acclaim before being updated on Steam in 2011 with features like cloud save support.
Like in the original game, Exotics are the most desirable items for you to obtain in Destiny 2. While you're sure to get your hands on some through loot drops from enemies or chests, there are also those that you can obtain through a specific process.
There will likely be more uncovered in the days and weeks ahead, but to help kickstart your Exotic collection, we've rounded up the ways in which you can get your hands on several right now. You're guaranteed to get one piece of armor fairly early on by completing story missions, but these guides should give you some targets to aim for (or an idea of what's required if you want something specific). One word of caution: You may want to wait before completing quests that reward you with an Exotic, as your Power level will determine how strong it is. By waiting, you'll ensure you get a higher-level weapon without needing to infuse it.
We'll continue to update this guide with more walkthroughs in the days ahead. For more, check out our roundup of Destiny 2 guides, tips, and tricks.
Coldheart (Exotic Trace Rifle)
Coldheart is very straightforward to obtain: if you pre-ordered the game, you'll get it--eventually. As with the bonuses for purchasing Destiny 2's Deluxe edition, you first need to complete the campaign. Once you've done so, you can simply head to the Gunsmith (located at the Farm) to acquire it.
Sturm (Exotic Hand Cannon)
Once again, completing the campaign is a prerequisite for getting your hands on Sturm. With that out of the way, head to Nessus and start the mission O Captain (at Exodus Black, near Failsafe). Make your way through it and you'll receive the sidearm Drang, and then receive a request to talk to Rahool. You'll have to bring him a number of Engrams--five Legendaries and one Exotic--and kill 10 Fallen on Nessus using Drang. Rahool will then send you to Tyra Karn at the Farm, who will send you to Nessus to kill 10 Fallen without reloading (though it seems you can kill a few, reload, and then kill a few more to make progress). After that, you'll have to 10 powerful Fallen on Nessus using Drang. Head back to Tyra and she'll send you to the Exodus Crash Strike on Nessus where you have to kill the Servitor named Kendriks-7. Go back to Tyra, and Sturm is yours.
MIDA Multi-Tool (Scout Rifle)
Again, you'll need to complete the campaign to qualify for this. Work your way through the various missions available in the European Dead Zone, culminating in the mission titled Enhance, which will net you the MIDA Mini-Tool. (Take note that this step involving Enhance is currently bugged--make sure you have more than one Energy Weapon slot available when completing the quest.) With that in hand, head to Banshee-44 at the Farm to receive a new mission: using a scout rifle, land 50 precisions shots and then get 25 multi-kills without reloading. Go back to Banshee-44 for the next quest, which tasks you with dismantling five Rare (or better) scout rifles. Returning to Banshee-44 will give you another quest, this time to rack up 50 kills while in mid-air with the MIDA Mini-Tool. With that complete, see Banshee-44 for your new MIDA Multi-Tool.
The next update for Rocket League is just around the corner. The game's Autumn Update arrives on September 28 and introduces new items, player banners, and a new seasonal arena, among other features.
The seasonal arena is called the Farmstead, and like its name implies, it's an autumn-themed map set in the middle of a farm. It'll be available in Competitive, Casual, and Private matches following the update, but it'll only be around for a limited time this fall. You can see screenshots of the arena below.
In addition to the season arena, the Autumn Update introduces standard arena versions of Wasteland and Starbase Arc. The classic versions of both will remain available for Private and offline matches. A new customization option in the form of player banners will be added to the game as well. Players will also have a chance to snag 90 free customization options, which will be available as Uncommon, Rare, and Very Rare drops after online matches.
Finally, Rocket League's Autumn Update adds a few new features, including limited-time events and transparent goalposts. The PC version will also receive LAN support, and PC players will be able to beta test the game's new Party and Tournament systems following the update. You can read more about the Autumn Update on the Rocket League website.
It didn't take especially long for the first group to beat Destiny 2's new Leviathan Raid. For most players, it's a challenge that will persist for weeks or months, but whatever the case, it's now a permanent part of the game. Even if you're not prepared to jump into the Raid anytime soon, its addition does have a cool, albeit minor impact on all players.
The Raid is accessed through the Director by selecting an icon for the Leviathan, which is located near Nessus. But its proximity to Nessus on that screen is also representative of its in-game location: As seen in the images below, when you're on the surface on Nessus now, you can actually look up and see the Leviathan in the sky. You can't physically access it, but seeing it there adds a neat bit of presence to something that could have easily be confined to the Director screen and nothing more.
If you're feeling up to the challenge of the Raid, you can check out our Leviathan Raid guide for tips and a walkthrough, including some weapon recommendations. Those who are not quite at that level yet can also try out the latest Nightfall Strike, which provides another good opportunity to secure the Rat King Exotic sidearm. The Guided Games feature was introduced this week in beta, providing an in-game way to form a Fireteam for tackling the Nightfall.
Looking for something to play this weekend? Ubisoft has announced a free weekend promotion for The Division, allowing everyone on PC to try the full game for three days. The free weekend, which is only being held on PC, runs September 14 through September 17. You can see all the important details about it below.
The Division is on sale for this weekend as part of promotion, with the standard game selling for $20. Also worth noting is that all progress from the free weekend will carry over if you decide to buy it after. You can try out the full game, with the exception of its paid DLC expansions, which are not included.
It's a fairly busy week for Nintendo Switch. Following the release of Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition on September 12, another six new games have now been added to the console's Eshop today, with two more slated to arrive tomorrow.
As usual, today's batch of releases includes a new ACA Neo Geo title: SpinMaster, a cartoony beat-'em-up originally released in 1993. The game allows up to two players to play together as Johnny and Tom, who must use a variety of different weapons (including a yo-yo) to fight their way through side-scrolling stages and stop the mad scientist Dr. De Playne. Like all other ACA Neo Geo games, SpinMaster carries a price tag of $8/£6.29.
Also available today is Semispheres, a split-screen "parallel puzzle game" that has you controlling two characters simultaneously to work through puzzles. It retails for $10. Beyond that is Quest of Dungeons ($9/£8), a dungeon crawler with retro visuals and permadeath. Rounding out today's new releases are 36 Fragments of Midnight ($3/£3), a stylish, procedurally-generated platformer; Kingdom: New Lands ($15/£13.49), a unique side-scrolling simulation/strategy game; and the kart racer Beach Buggy Racing ($10/£10).
There are other titles still on the way to Switch soon. Tomorrow, September 15, sees the release of Robonauts, a side-scrolling action game that has players switching gravity to jump between planets and blast foes. The game typically retails for $15, but those who pick it up in the next two weeks can get it for a discounted $13.49. Meanwhile, basketball fans will be able to play the newest installment in 2K Sports' popular basketball series, NBA 2K18, also on September 15.
Whether you're looking for a break from Destiny 2, not enamored with this week's new Xbox One games, or simply want to boot up an older game, today's a good day. Following a period with few new games added, Microsoft has announced several more additions to the Xbox One's backwards compatibility library.
A total of six Xbox 360 games have been added to the list today, although one of these, Virtual-On, is only supported in Japan. For those elsewhere in the world, there's still plenty to check out, including Saints Row: The Third, arguably the best game in the series; horror game Slender: The Arrival; arcade classic Super Contra; Monopoly Deal, a fast-paced adaptation of the board game; and Undertow, which was offered as a freebie back in 2008 following extended Xbox Live issues.
All of these games are now playable on Xbox One. If you already own them, you can either pop in the disc or browse to the Ready to Download area of the My Games and Apps section to download it. Alternatively, you can buy them straight from the Xbox Store and start playing.
The Xbox One's backwards compatibility feature, introduced in November 2015, lets you play Xbox 360 games on the new console. But what games are available? We've now rounded them all up--and we'll continue to update this post as new games are made available.

Blizzard has posted the newest "Developer Update" video for Overwatch, and this one is not like the rest. In this video, titled "Play Nice, Play Fair," game director Jeff Kaplan talks extensively about Blizzard's reaction to the "rising tide of toxicity or bad behaviour in the game" and what the studio is doing to help make Overwatch a more welcoming place.
Starting off, Kaplan pointed out that the player-reporting tools that were already available on PC are now on console. The tools are not perfect, he acknowledged, but it's a first step. Kaplan also spoke more broadly about poor behaviour in Overwatch, saying Blizzard has taken action against more than 480,000 accounts since the game launched in May 2016. 340,000 of those were a direct result of the player-reporting system, Kaplan said.
Whatever Blizzard does to improve the experience, there will never be a sudden fix for bad behaviour. "There is not going to be a moment where we have a magic patch in Overwatch that makes bad behaviour go away," Kaplan explained. "But it is a continual process that we are very dedicated to fixing and improving."
Kaplan added that Blizzard doesn't plan to create "naughty pools" as some games do, where offending players aren't banned altogether but put in a pool with other jerks. "Our highest level philosophy is, 'If you are a bad person doing bad things in Overwatch, we don't want you in Overwatch," he said. "Overwatch should be an inclusive game space."
Generally speaking, Kaplan said he thinks the toxicity problem is worse in video games because there is an element of anonymity when you're sitting behind a keyboard or holding a controller in some far-away room than where your teammates or foes are. He gave the example of if you were driving in your car and someone cut you off, you might curse them out. But if you actually met them and had an issue face-to-face, you might not be so aggressive or mean.
While Blizzard will take steps to stem the tide of toxicity in Overwatch, Kaplan stressed that players, too, must "take a deep look inward" and think about if they could be nicer. He also pointed out that creating systems in Overwatch that combat toxicity takes time away from actual game development. So if you want Blizzard to release more new features/maps/characters/whatever and faster, stop being a jerk, basically.
"The bad behaviour not just ruining the experience for one another, but the bad behaviour is actually making the game progress in terms of development at a much slower rate," Kaplan said, acknowledging that he, too, has been guilty of being mean to people online.
How do you feel about the level of toxicity and bad behaviour in Overwatch? Let us know in the comments below!
To coincide with the release of Call of Duty: WWII, Sony has announced that it will release a new limited-edition version of the PlayStation 4 later this year. It features a camouflage design and a matching controller.
The Call of Duty: WWII PS4 bundle includes a system that sports a traditional camo design, with a PlayStation logo and a variety of DualShock silhouettes hidden in the pattern (but no boots on the ground that I can detect). The console comes with a 1 TB hard drive and is paired with a two-tone green controller that matches the camo. In addition to the system itself, you'll also receive a copy of Call of Duty: WWI; Sony hasn't yet specified if this is a physical or digital copy, although bundles tend to include the latter.
Pre-orders for the bundle go online today, and it will then launch alongside the game on November 3. It's priced at $300 in the US and $380 in Canada; further international pricing has not been announced, though we do know the bundle is coming to Europe. Additionally, those in Europe who purchase the bundle will receive some in-game content: the Divisions pack, Nazi Zombies pack, and a weapon unlock Token. In Europe, Sony will also offer bundles with the game and the standard black PS4 and PS4 Pro models.
Call of Duty: WWII launches on November 3 and, like recent games in the series, will feature timed exclusive content. That means DLC packs will launch on PS4 30 days before they arrive on PC or Xbox One.
Anyone booting up their PlayStation 4 today will find that a new system update is now available. Unfortunately, this is not the next big update and is instead one that introduces no new user-facing features.
The 340 MB update, which brings the PS4's system software to version 4.74, lists only one upgrade in its notes, stating that it "improves system performance." That phrasing is slightly different from that of previous small updates, which reported that they "improve[d] the quality of the system performance." Whether there's anything to be read into that remains to be seen, but the bottom line either way is that you shouldn't start up your system expecting any major new features to be introduced.
A number of users have reported crashes when playing Destiny 2 on PS4 and PS4 Pro in particular since its launch last week. As of yet, there's no indication if this update will have any impact on those problems.
There are new features on the way to PS4 in the near future. Sony has already detailed the forthcoming PS4 5.0 update, which entered beta testing in August. Among other things, it provides the option for higher quality streaming on PS4 Pro, adds a new Group feature to the friends list, brings new information to the Quick Menu, and revamps parental controls.
One of Destiny 2's many additions to existing systems is the concept of Heroic Public Events. These are harder versions of the standard Public Events you run into throughout the world and, as such, provide an opportunity to earn better loot. Unlocking them, however, is not quite as simple as pressing a button to jack up the difficulty.
The process for activating a Heroic Public Event varies from one to the next. There is a specific set of steps you (or the other players around) have to follow; these need to be repeated within the time limit each time you want to attempt a Heroic. The video above provides a step-by-step breakdown of what you need to do for each Public Event, which should make it easy to identify exactly where to go and what to do. You'll also find the instructions for each Heroic below--be mindful to do everything before the event's time limit expires. For more, check out our roundup of all of our Destiny 2 guides, tips, and news.
Injection Rig Heroic Public Event
Start out by killing a Psion, and then shoot a vent at the top of the rig. Although you'll be taking damage, be sure to destroy it. Kill the next Psion and destroy another vent located in the middle of the rig. Kill a third Psion and then destroy the vent that becomes exposed at the bottom of the rig. You may need to run around the middle in order to see which part of it has opened up to take damage. This process will cause a boss, Infiltrator Valus, to spawn, whom you'll need to defeat.
Destroy The Arsenal Walker Heroic Public Event
The goal here is to obtain the three Scorch Cannons surrounding the area, each of which is encased in a dome. As usual when dealing with a walker, attack one of its legs until it collapses. This will cause it to drop three Arc Charges, which you'll then need to carry to one of the domes containing a Scorch Cannon. The dome will have a place to deposit the Arc Charge, and you'll need to bring a total of two to each dome to get your hands on the weapon. Eventually, a second walker will be deployed, and you'll have to defeat both of them to finish.
Glimmer Extraction Heroic Public Event
At each of the sites throughout the event, there is a device that is extracting Glimmer. Destroy each of these before eliminating all of the nearby enemies. Then, at the final site, you'll have to guard a pile of Glimmer while standing in a designated area to complete a transmat process. Stay in the area as much as possible, as the transmat has to finish before time runs out.
Cabal Excavation Heroic Public Event
Stand near the drill to make progress, and eventually a Cabal Thresher ship will fly in nearby. Do everything you can to quickly destroy it, as it only sticks around for a limited time. If you manage to do so, a Centurion boss will spawn who needs to be defeated to complete the Heroic.
Witches' Ritual Heroic Public Event
Start out by killing a pair of Wizards while standing on the designated circles on the ground. At this point, you'll need to stand on one of the circles and destroy two shards--one is above and to the left of the big portal that enemies are coming through, and the other is above and to the right. This will cause a Hive Knight boss to spawn in; defeat him, and you're all done.
Ether Resupply Heroic Public Event
Before taking out the giant Servitor, quickly kill all of the smaller ones around the area. Once they've been dealt with, the main enemy becomes more challenging. Defeat it and you're done.
Taken Blight Heroic Public Event
The initial goal here is to destroy the giant Blight ball, which is immune to regular damage. In order to hurt it, you'll need to obtain the Blight Receding buff by going into the nearby Blight-infested area. Step back outside with the buff and deal as much damage as you can to the big Blight ball. Once you've destroyed it, the Blightmaker boss spawns in, and you'll have to defeat it to complete the Heroic.
Spire Integration Heroic Public Event
In addition to protecting the main conduit, players have to go around and stand on nearby pads. There are three in total that need to be captured, and once that's done, a Hydra will spawn in that needs to be defeated.
Unlike its predecessor, Destiny 2 will release on PC. Although players will have to wait longer for it--Destiny 2 doesn't launch on PC until October 24 but is already available on Xbox One and PS4--the PC version does feature a variety of improvements and differences compared with its console counterparts. To help you get an idea of what to expect from the PC release of Bungie's hotly anticipated sequel, we've gathered all of the essential details below.
The PC version is confirmed to release on October 24, while the Xbox One and PS4 versions are already out, having launched on September 6. (Betas on all platforms have also wrapped up.) In terms of actual playable content, everything is the same on PC--with one exception. Sony's timed-exclusive content for Destiny 2 affects not just Xbox One players, but those on PC. The PS4 version comes with an extra Strike, Crucible map, and some items that will not be available on other platforms for at least one year. There's no precise date for it yet, but after PlayStation-exclusive content in Destiny 1 remained exclusive for longer than expected, Bungie has explicitly stated that this Destiny 2 content will be out by the end of 2018.
Destiny 2 PC Minimum Requirements and Recommended Specs
While there may be changes made for the final release, Destiny 2's PC beta brought a list of minimum and recommended system specs. Additionally, Bungie provided a list of hardware for those looking to upgrade their systems, with CPU and GPU minimums and recommendations.

Unfortunately, the game will use peer-to-peer servers. However, this doesn't work quite the same as in the previous game; when Bungie explained why Destiny 2 doesn't use dedicated servers, it noted that you'll never run into a host migration situation.
Destiny 2 PC Impressions
During our hands-on time with the game, we found the mouse and keyboard support to be a welcome addition. It enhanced the overall feel of multiplayer, though it did seem to make the single-player portions we played easier than we anticipated. You can check out our analysis of the PC beta for a technical look at the game; for further impressions of the PC version, watch the video below.
Destiny 2 Review
If you're hoping the game is dramatically different from the original Destiny, you may be in for a disappointment, but those seeking a refined version of that game will likely be pleased. You can read our impressions of the full game on console in our Destiny 2 review diary and Destiny 2 review-in-progress.
Destiny 2 Uses Blizzard Battle.net
Destiny 2 uses Blizzard's desktop app. It's the first game not directly developed by Blizzard to appear on the platform. Activision and Blizzard have changed its name several times recently, but moving forward it will be referred to as Blizzard Battle.net.
Destiny Progress Doesn't Transfer to Destiny 2
Unfortunately, Destiny 1 power, possessions, and Eververse-related items and currency will not transfer over. While your character's appearance will not be abandoned in the sequel for console owners, there's no word if it'll support any kind of transfer from console to PC.
It's been a long wait for a PvP mode in Ghost Recon: Wildlands, but we recently got a good look at Ghost War in action. The upcoming mode, which will be available for free, allows two teams to take one another on in what amounts to deathmatch.
As shown off in the video above, Ghost War is a 4v4 mode that supports revives. It does not, however, include vehicles or more complex objectives--at least at this point. Matches play out as a best-of-three affair with 10-minute rounds. At launch, there are eight maps and 12 classes available, only six of which we were actually able to try out.
A free PvP mode for Wildlands was announced way back in March as part of Ubisoft's post-launch plans for the game, which also included other free updates and paid DLC. Those expansions have already been released, while Ghost War is still to come sometime this fall. An open beta for Ghost War was announced last month and is now scheduled for September 21-25.
Nintendo held its latest Nintendo Direct briefing today--and it was stacked with news. Among other things, we learned that Doom and Wolfenstein II are coming to Nintendo Switch, while the release date for Skyrim on Switch was finally locked down.
Additionally, Nintendo announced a new, Pokemon-themed New 2DS XL (and a nice-looking orange-and-white model), while the company also revealed when the Zelda: Breath of the Wild Champions Amiibo release and what they do.
In terms of trailers, one of the best was for Nintendo's Super Mario Odyssey. The in-depth video showed off the game's various kingdoms, one of which was revealed for the first time: a frosty world with the appropriate name of Shiveria. You can see a roundup of all the big news and trailers below.
Kirby Star Allies, which was announced at E3 back in June and is the first Kirby game for Nintendo Switch, will launch for the console in Spring 2018.
Splatoon 2 is getting more updates, one piece of which is the returning map Kelp Dome. It arrives on September 15 as part of a free update. Additionally, another stage, Snapper Canal and a new Brella weapon called Tenta Brella, will launch in the future.
An update for the Switch fighting game Arms is out today, and it lets players remap the controls. Additionally, a new fighter named Lola Pop is out now.
Snipperclips Plus: Cut it out, together! is a new version of the original puzzle game, featuring 30+ new stages and more. If you already bought the game digitally, you can get the new content via a $10 DLC purchase from the eShop. The full game launches on November 10, priced at $30.
NBA 2K18 for Switch launches in the eShop on September 15, with a physical release in stores to follow on October 17.
WWE 2K18 is on the way for Switch, too, but a release date hasn't been announced.
A new, intriguing-looking shooter called Morphies Law is coming to Switch this winter. The concept is that when you land a shot, it transfers the mass from your foe to the attacker, so that leads to some interesting scenarios.
Arena of Valor is a new free-to-play MOBA from Tencent where you can choose from 35 heroes, including roles like tank, mage, warrior, and assassin. A beta test version of the game will launch this winter.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions comes out on October 6, and it supports the new Goomba and Koopa Troopa Amiibo and the Boo Amiibo. Further details about Amiibo functionality will be announced later.
Yo-Kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters, which is described as the "definitive" version of Yo-Kai Watch 2, will launch on September 29. People who own the base game already can download an update on September 14 that adds the Yo-kai Watch Psychic Blasters mode.
The RPG The Alliance Alive will launch in early 2018. It's described as an "old-school RPG."
A Nintendo Switch version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was one of the big surprises of last year's system reveal event, but until now we only had a vague idea of when to expect it. As part of today's lengthy Nintendo Direct, however, we got a hard release date.
Skyrim is due out for Switch on November 17 in both North America and Europe, Nintendo has revealed. That's almost six years to the day after its original release on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360; it arrived for those consoles back on November 11, 2011. This Switch version comes with the base game and its three expansions: Dragonborn, Dawnguard, and Hearthfire.
Besides that, Skyrim on Switch includes some unique features. It can be played with motion controls, allowing you to swing weapons, pick locks, or aim your bow with the Joy-Cons. Additionally, it includes exclusive Zelda-themed armor and weapons, which we've seen before. These are unlocked by scanning compatible Amiibo figures, though the presentation revealed you may be able to find the rare items through adventuring in the world as well.
Doom was a sleeper hit last year, turning out to be a game much, much better than anyone expected. And if you haven't gotten around to playing it yet, you'll soon have a new platform on which you can do so: Nintendo Switch.
During today's Nintendo Direct presentation, we got the out-of-nowhere announcement that Doom is headed to Nintendo's console. That's a surprise in part because there hasn't been a ton of Mature-rated content released on the platform to date, a category that Doom comfortably fits into with its gruesome violence.
The Switch version of Doom arrives sometime this holiday, although no further specifics were shared about a release date or content additions. Doom's campaign is the big highlight--and with good reason, as our Doom review notes--but the game also features a substantial multiplayer component that has only grown since release. Some big changes were made to it earlier this year, when Bethesda and developer id Software decided to make its DLC free to all players. We do know that the Switch version includes multiplayer and that it will be offered via a Day One update. It includes all of the content already released for the mode, but there's no word yet on whether there will be any further changes to it.
Among the games to be featured during today's Nintendo Direct is the new RPG from Square Enix, which has the working (and somewhat ridiculous) title Project Octopath Traveler. First announced earlier this year, today's presentation provided us with some more details about the game, which is in development by the same team responsible for Bravely Default.
The gorgeous-looking RPG features eight different playable characters, each with a distinct playstyle. The Direct showcased some of these, including Warrior and Dancer, while also highlighting some combat. Nintendo also teased that an extended trailer is on the way, which you can watch above.
Visually, it looks great, using what the devs call "HD-2D" graphics. But you won't have to settle for watching it in a livestream. Nintendo revealed that a demo for the game arrives on the Eshop today, giving you the opportunity to get a feel for it yourself. The full game will have a simultaneous worldwide release date at some point in 2018.
A new Mario Party game is in the works for 3DS, but it's not an entirely original title. Instead, Nintendo is bringing a compilation of sorts to the platform that features some of the best content from previous games.
Announced during today's Nintendo Direct, Mario Party: The Top 100 packages together a selection of the best mini-games from past Mario Party console titles. It features Download Play, allowing up to four people to take part in multiplayer as long as one person owns a copy of the game.
Mario Party: The Top 100 releases for 3DS on November 10. It follows last year's Mario Party: Star Rush, which is the newest entry in the series. The last numbered entry was 2015's Mario Party 10. Unfortunately, we didn't get any word today on an appearance of the series on Nintendo Switch, where it would seemingly be a perfect fit.
The incredible popularity of Minecraft has seen it launch for numerous platforms, but despite its sizable install base, the 3DS has not been among them. That changes today, although not everyone with a 3DS will be able to play it.
Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition, as it's called, is titled as such because it doesn't work on all platforms in the 3DS family. It's restricted to use on the New 3DS and New 2DS systems, both of which feature more powerful hardware than the standard 3DS and 2DS systems. This version of the game features both the Survival and Creative modes, as well as two control schemes: standard buttons and touch controls. Additionally, it includes special skin and texture packs, which will presumably be the Nintendo-themed ones we've seen on Wii U and Switch.
The game was announced today during the Nintendo Direct presentation. You won't have to wait long to dive in--an Eshop release for the game is coming today. If you'd prefer a physical copy, however, that is coming, but not until some unspecified point in the future.
While we knew the latest Nintendo Direct would run a longer-than-usual 45 minutes, it still managed to surprise with just how much was packed into it. There were numerous game announcements, details announced, release dates shared, and trailers showcased. Although a number of these games--like Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus for Switch--aren't coming until next year, there were actually a number of things that you can download now on Switch and 3DS.
A number of other things are coming in the near future, too. Yo-Kai Watch 2 owners can get a free Oni Evolution update starting on September 14 that adds a new mode. SteamWorld Dig 2 launches for Switch on September 21, with Golf Story coming sometime this month. A free update for Flip Wars launching in the near future adds a new stage and modes, as well as wireless multiplayer. Splatoon 2 adds a new map on September 15, with a new map and weapon coming soon.
Bruce Straley, one of the most prominent individuals at Uncharted and The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog, has announced he is leaving the studio. He had been working there for almost two decades.
Calling it the "hardest decision of [his] career," Straley explained the move in a post on Naughty Dog's website: "I'm leaving Naughty Dog with the strongest team it's ever had, and that's saying a lot. But more than the talent, it's the people that I'll miss the most. The work culture at Naughty Dog is about getting out of your seat and solving problems together. It's what has allowed me to build so many friendships and gain so much respect for this stellar group of people.
"I get it--'it's just work'--but when you spend as much time as we do together, in the pressure cooker of creative work and deadlines, you really get to know a person. And I've had my share of difficult and humbling moments. But having the privilege to see people grow beyond their concept of what's possible for themselves technically, creatively, and personally has been the most rewarding aspect of my job and continues to motivate me to do the same. I'm so proud to have been a part of this team. I can't wait to see what they create in the future."
He goes on to thank a number of individuals by name, including Amy Hennig and Neil Druckmann, with whom he worked on the Uncharted series, as well as former co-president Christophe Balestra, president Evan Wells, and co-founders Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin. Straley had been with Naughty Dog for 18 years, having started there on the excellent Crash Team Racing back in 1999. More recently, he serves as the co-director on Uncharted 2 (with Hennig) and Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us (both with Druckmann).
His blog post doesn't mention what's next yet, simply saying, "As I close this chapter with a heavy heart and an appreciation for everything Naughty Dog has done for me, I open the next with an excitement to continue the journey into the creative process. I don't have anything to announce just yet, but I look forward to the discovery and to sharing it with you all soon."
Cliff Bleszinski knows the player figures for LawBreakers right now are low. But he isn't losing faith. Games can be slow-burners--just look at Warframe as an example--and developer Boss Key has big plans to get lapsed players to return and bring in new ones. In an interview with GameSpot this week, Bleszinski spoke frankly about LawBreakers. He told us he's been humbled by the low player figures; he talked about the mistakes he made in the direction of the game. He said launching near "Destiny season" probably didn't help. And he said said he wants to be "less of a dick" with his interactions with people online.
Released in August for PC and PlayStation 4, LawBreakers is a team-based shooter that you might say resembles Overwatch in some ways. But for Bleszinski, he says he never wanted to try to go head-to-head with Blizzard's juggernaut. LawBreakers has an edgy, R-rated tone, you might say, while Overwatch is more colorful and lighthearted. Bleszinski spoke extensively about Boss Key's layers of differentiation, and the game no doubt stands out from the pack. But the game's release did not go entirely to plan. As mentioned, player figures fell off a cliff, at least on PC; the current player count on PC is reportedly 0, with a peak concurrent player figure of 218 over the past 24 hours; it had an all-time peak of 7,482 players, according to Steamcharts. These numbers may not be entirely accurate, but it is clear that player figures are low on PC. The PS4 edition is "doing fine," Bleszinski said. The console and PC communities have different mindsets when it comes to judging success, the developer said.
"There is a situation where players look at numbers on Steam; that doesn't happen on PlayStation 4. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but you look at PC, [concurrent user] health versus PS4, PS4 is doing fine," he said. "People cough up 30 bucks and hop online and they don't overthink it. On PC there is you wanting to declare something a success or a bomb by this internet culture that loves to just observe things. But it's like, guys, you know, the small bit [of players] that we have, we're going to continue to iterate and engage. As we issue content drops, maybe there's going to be sales or potential free weekends down the line, continue to fluff that CCU up."
One of the big issues with low player figures is long matchmaking times. Here in Australia, GameSpot has not been able to find a match on PS4 at all over the past two weeks after multiple attempts. We stopped trying the last time after 45+ minutes of matchmaking.
Boss Key has big plans for LawBreakers going forward. In addition to "rapid fire" updates for quick fixes and changes, the studio is working on new maps, new features (the much-requested Team Deathmatch is coming!), a ranked mode called Boss League, and a new, defensive-minded class.
"It's a marathon. Not a sprint," Bleszinski explained. "We're going to keep iterating keep working on it. At the end of the day, I didn't want to make the exact same archetypes that everybody else did. I wanted to make a game that was first and foremost a shooter for shooter players."
"I'm going to continue to iterate on this game, continue to add to it. And try to be less of a dick, honestly" -- Bleszinski
Bleszinski believes LawBreakers could have a trajectory similar to Warframe, which he says launched with low player numbers and scaled up in time due to developer Digital Extremes' commitment to release new and exciting content. For LawBreakers, Bleszinski says the team is also overhauling the game's marketing. As you may have seen, the game's logo--a Blink 182-like sad face with Xs for eyes--does not look all that inviting or one that would espouse positive feelings. The new marketing campaign for LawBreakers will take steps to help people understand the appeal of the game; principally that it is a white-knuckle, high-action, over-the-top shooter that is fun to play with friends.
"We need the bodies. We need to keep fluffing up the CCU," Bleszinski said. "We need to do what we can to let people know this is a really sweaty palm type of experience that can hopefully lend itself to eSports. But you know, I have to keep this game alive, first and foremost. I can be very cocky and very brash on social media. And realising that, you know, we have a fledgling player base. It's been very humbling for me. I'm going to continue to iterate on this game, continue to add to it. And try to be less of a dick, honestly."
The excitement of what it feels like to play LawBreakers is "not coming across right now," Bleszinski acknowledged. One further element of Boss Key's attempts to bring back lapsed players and draw in new ones is an overhauled onboarding experience. The full details are not known at this stage, but it'll include new tutorial videos and other guides to help players learn the ins and outs of each class.
Also in the interview, Bleszinski candidly spoke about what he would have done differently. There was no Team Deathmatch at launch (but it's in the game now through the Skirmish playlist), and Bleszinski unequivocally said it was a mistake to not ship with it; a mistake he made because he wouldn't budge on his vision and development mantra.
"I didn't want to do the exact same stuff everybody else did. The funny thing was, making a character-based, class based shooter--even though it's not as simple as a traditional arena shooter, it still has a lot of that kind of feel underneath it all," he said. "In hindsight, I think it was a mistake to not ship with it. I was stubborn. I was like, 'Ohh, everybody's [already] done TDM.' Even Blizzard's like, 'Screw it, we need to put TDM action in Overwatch.' Fundamentally, at the end of the day, players just want to get in and shoot some stuff sometimes. That's one of the things that I consider my strengths: I am willing to admit when I am wrong. I think people in the public eye--it would do them a great benefit to do that more often."
The lower-than-expected player figures for LawBreakers might have come as a surprise to Bleszinski, Boss Key, and publisher Nexon. After all, the game received a lot of praise in the press and from fans. Reviews on Steam are designated as "Very Positive," while the press mostly enjoyed the game as well. Whatever the case, the player figures are low, and Bleszinski is the first to admit his mistakes.
"I have a reputation for being brash and loud, but I am the first person to admit when I'm wrong," he said. "We certainly did make our share of mistakes with the game. In spite of the mistakes, we're going to continue to update and iterate, and the reviews do not lie."
"Fundamentally, at the end of the day, players just want to get in and shoot some stuff sometimes" -- Bleszinski on why he wanted to add TDM to LawBreakers
LawBreakers is the first game from Bleszinski's studio, Boss Key, which he founded after leaving Epic Games. Because the studio is so new, and relatively small, at just 65 people, some "concessions" had to be made in regards to the content that would be in the game at launch. Bleszinski wanted to put his employees first--and that is an notable, admirable thing, given the stories of extended crunch and overly stressful working conditions we often hear about.
"The problem with what we were trying to pull off with this company and this title was shipping a quality product with a team of 65 people without ruining everybody's marriages," he said. ""So certain concessions did have to be made from a production standpoint. It's easy for me to sit there and go, 'Ah, we should have shipped with this,' 'We should have shipped with that.' [Or] change the date. In hindsight, it would have made sense. But hindsight is always 20/20. If I could go back in time I'd find a way to change the schedule and ship with more of those things."
"Those of you who have been kind enough to drop $30 on this; we've got your back and we're sticking with it."
We will have MUCH MORE from our conversation with Bleszinski coming up soon. He also spoke about if the game could adopt a free-to-play, the likelihood of Xbox One and Nintendo Switch version, what's being done to improve matchmaking times, and how he's on a first name basis with the governor of North Carolina.
Just over a week after the game's release, Destiny 2's Leviathan Raid has gone live. Provided they're powerful enough, players can dive into the game's first Raid right now, although just how difficult of a challenge it will pose remains to be seen. For tips, you can check out our Destiny 2 Leviathan Raid guide.
Leviathan's release time has now passed, and the Raid is accessible in-game by selecting an icon for the Leviathan, which is located near Nessus on the main Director screen. According to game director Luke Smith, the Power level range for the Raid is 260-280, and the in-game recommendation is for players with Power levels at or above 270. If you encounter an issue with the game insisting you complete an advanced Milestone, you may need to log out and back in (or at least leave your current group momentarily) to trigger it. This may only be a problem if you were online at 10 AM when the Raid went live. Leviathan was beaten first by the clan The Legend Himself.
Bungie has deliberately stayed largely silent on the Raid, preferring that players discover much of it for themselves. Earlier this year, Smith said Bungie's goal was "building a place you believe is real ... a place that you believe could exist. It's unlike anything we've done." It did today release the teaser trailer above, and while it may contain some hints of what to expect, it's far from an in-depth reveal of what Leviathan will throw at players.
If you're not quite ready for the Raid, you can check out Destiny 2's latest Nightfall, which features a new modifier not seen in last week's. The weekly reset has also brought new Milestones and more for players to do. There's more new stuff on the way later this week, including the first appearance of Xur and Trials.
Today during the Nintendo Direct briefing, Nintendo announced a new color scheme for the New 2DS XL. The new color is orange and white, and it looks really nice. This is the new-model 2DS, not the original version.
Already available in Australia and New Zealand, the new color will be available to buy in North America on October 6. It'll cost $150.
There were a lot of Good Tweets™ on the subject, and we're collecting some of the silliest ones we've seen in this post because we need to preserve this moment in gaming history. But before we get started, you should know that the @ShirtlessMario Twitter handle is already taken. Sorry about that (it wasn't me; or was it? It wasn't). And yep, there is already a meme template on KnowYourMeme for Shirtless Mario.
Obviously what the internet ran with was the fact that we saw Mario's nipples. We didn't doubt he had them, but now we've seen them. What we didn't learn is if Mario has an innie or an outie belly button, or if he has one at all, because he pulls his swim trunks up so high. What's up with that?
Whatever the case, below you can see some silly reactions to shirtless Mario. Super Mario Odyssey, which looks really good, launches on October 27 for Nintendo Switch.
Upon further inspection, Mario has been shirtless before...but DIDN'T HAVE NIPPLES. He GREW nipples for Odyssey. Story of the CENTURY. pic.twitter.com/V0luiEUYxC
Just hours after going live, Destiny 2's first raid, Leviathan, has been beaten. Bungie reported on Twitter that the clan "The Legend Himself" took down the raid before any other group. You can see the winning moment below, but there are spoilers of course.
We don't have the full player stats for the raid clear as of yet, but we'll report back if and when they become available.
Congratulations to Clan 'The Legend Himself' on being the World First to complete the Leviathan Raid. SPOILERS:https://t.co/bg5azt5O1S
Additionally, Bungie announced that, in the wake of the first team clearing the Leviathan raid, it's released a new map called Emperor's Respite in the Crucible. You can see an image of the map below, or jump into the game directly now to try it out.
The first Fireteam has made their way through Leviathan. Shaxx isn't far behind. Emperor's Respite is now available for all in the Crucible. pic.twitter.com/Cu7aV0EZb5
What's more, Bungie's Andrew Hopps shared a video of the team at Bungie watching The Legend Himself finish off the raid, cheering like mad at the end when the job is done. It's pretty cool to see Bungie get so hyped for its community like this.
You need to be Power level 260 or above to get into the Leviathan raid. You can check out GameSpot's Leviathan raid tips here to find out everything you need to know.
A big-time professional gaming team, TeamEnVy US, has launched a cooking show. Episode one of the appropriately titled "EnVy Eats" sees team member Timo "Taimou" Kettunen cooking something he knows well: meatballs. Apparently using his mother's recipe, Kettunen walks you through the process of making the dish--and it looks good.
Kettunen, who is from Finland, also offers up some choice advice in the video: "Don't kill yourself; don't hurt your hands, either. You need them for gaming." And regarding the massive amount of salt he adds to the mix, Kettunen says, "In Finland, the only worthy way of dying is either by domestic violence, alcoholism, or getting cardiac arrest--so we're going to put a lot of salt in." There are a few "balls" jokes, too (via Kotaku).
This video is labeled Episode 1, so presumably there will be more EnVy Eats episodes coming up next, potentially with other members of the team preparing their own favourite dishes.
In August, ESPN reported that Team EnVy received a $35 million investment from oil and gas magnate Kenneth Hersh to secure an Overwatch League team in Dallas.
