How Darkseid And DC's "Fourth World" Fit Into The Justice League Mythology

By Anonymous on Nov 21, 2017 12:02 am

Even if you're not a fan of DC Comics, chances are you've heard of Gotham City, or Metropolis. You might even have heard of Themyscira--the home of Wonder Woman and the Amazons--too. But names like "Apokolips" and "New Genesis" are probably still a bit vague on associations.

That's OK. In terms of idiosyncratic DC Universe iconography, a map of the Fourth World is a pretty far cry from the comforting black and yellow of the Bat Signal--at least for now.

The release of Justice League marks DC's first attempt at translating the bombast of the New Gods to the big screen. So what does that actually mean? What is the Fourth World, who are the New Gods, and why should you care?

In The Beginning

To call the Fourth World totally arcane wouldn't really be fair--what it lacks in franchise and branding power, it makes up in (admittedly kind of niche) critical acclaim. In the simplest possible terms, the Fourth World is the collective name for a saga created (and when I say "created" I mean created--written, drawn, edited, top to bottom) by the legendary Jack Kirby after he left Marvel for DC in the 70s. The story actually got its start, strangely enough, in an issue of an ongoing book called Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen, but promptly spilled out into its own titles like New Gods, Mister Miracle, and Forever People.

All told, the whole Fourth World saga has 59 issues, hopscotching across multiple books to form an endless, cosmic, mythological spine for the DC Universe that's still looked at as a touchstone for heroes and villains even today.

The story of the Fourth World isn't all that complicated. The twin worlds of New Genesis and Apokolips were created when an ancient planet called Urgrund was torn in two by a war between its immortal citizens called--surprise--the Old Gods. The cataclysm on Urgrund was so terrible that it actually forced both new planets into a new corner of space and time--not a new universe, but a place outside the multiverse entirely, a literal fourth world populated by people who called themselves New Gods for reasons that are hopefully pretty obvious.

As you can probably guess by their rather on-the-nose names, Apokolips was an industrialized wasteland--Kirby's thinly veiled interpretation of hell--while New Genesis was a sparkling utopia--the equivalent of heaven. Apokolips was ruled by the tyrannical war monger Darkseid, while New Genesis was ruled by the cold-but-benevolent Highfather.

The war between the two planets was endless and all-consuming until an unconventional treaty was brokered. Darkseid and Highfather would swap sons--each giving an infant to their sworn enemy to be raised on the opposite planet as a sort of collateral. The son of Darkseid, Orion, would be doomed to forever feel like an outcast in the vain and superficial society of New Genesis, while the son of Highfather, Scott Free (aka Mister Miracle), would be subjected to untold tortures on Apokolips.

It worked--sort of. Nevermind that neither son had much say in the matter. Orion grew to adulthood on New Genesis while Scott scraped by in Apokolips, eventually finding love--a native of Apokolips named Big Barda--and escaping to Earth to be rid of his family tree all together. But eventually Darkseid's lust for power grew too intense for peace and he had his uncle (that's right, uncle, even immortal tyrant gods have to come from somewhere), the elite military general Steppenwolf, assassinate Highfather's wife to reignite the war, and then everything was off to the races once more with both New Genesis and Apokolips consumed by violence without end.

This sort of circular, unwinnable conflict defined much of the Fourth World. Everything from the dueling narratives of two prodigal sons to the nature of war and peace were on the table for exploration--big questions without real or concrete answers, remixed Bible stories that blended in with Star Trek and Lord of The Rings. The New Gods became DC's equivalent of a pantheon, a 70s sci-fi flavored answer to Marvel's super-heroic version of Norse mythology, but with no historical constraints or real world sources to consult.

Into The Future

Now, while the planets of the New Gods were technically isolated from Earth in their own area of space and time, Kirby also invented the technology in fiction to allow them to come and go from the stories of DC's other heroes. Nearly every New God had access to, or carried with them a "living" sentient personal computer called a Mother Box, which were able to (among other things) open and close "Boom Tubes"--point to point extradimensional transportation that would allow a person to travel from New Genesis to Earth, or Apokolips to Earth or--well, anywhere, really.

The barrier between the New Gods and the DC Universe at large became virtually nonexistent, and suddenly heroes like Superman and Batman were able to come face to face with literal immortal superhumans like Orion and Mister Miracle--or even the Lord of Apokolips himself, Darkseid.

This is how the New Gods really began to dig their heels into the DCU in a way that still matters today. Allowing someone like Darkseid, the immortal embodiment of all evil, to come and go from Earth essentially at will was a narrative booster shot for DC's shared universe like no other. Darkseid became the sort of "final boss" for DC's roster of superheroes; certain death, unstoppable destruction, something that even an all-but-invincible character like Superman couldn't face down on his own.

The same way Marvel has been teasing the arrival of their very own end-game villain, Thanos, in the MCU for years, all roads in the DCEU will eventually lead to Darkseid, and we've already seen the first hints. Justice League's Steppenwolf and his Parademons are remixed from their comic book origins, but the spine of the New Gods ideology is still there: The concept of Apokolips is, very much, a component of this world, as well as the idea of the advanced, alien Mother Box. It's probably best to start paying attention now while their cinematic incarnations are still in their infant stages than try to play catch up down the line.

After all, even when he's not immediately on the screen or on the page, the threat of Darkseid and the armies of Apokolips are a shadow looming large over the DC Universe. The presence of the New Gods may be a subtle one--they can even go completely unnoticed if you don't know what you're looking for--but the eventuality that New Genesis and Apokolips's unending, undying war will spill out into Earth and suddenly become the Justice League's problem is all but inevitable. It's one of the most fundamental building blocks of the DCU's shared universe--and it's already making it's way to theaters.

Top 10 UK Sales Chart: Star Wars Battlefront 2 Didn't Finish Top In Debut Week

By Anonymous on Nov 20, 2017 11:39 pm

Star Wars Battlefront II launched on PS4, Xbox One, and PC amid much controversy last week, and now it has failed to top the UK chart for its first week on sale. The sci-fi shooter was "narrowly" beaten by Call of Duty: WWII in that game's third week of availability, according to sales monitor Chart Track.

What's more, GamesIndustry.biz reports that Battlefront II's UK physical sales were down 61% compared to the 2015 series reboot, Star Wars Battlefront. Some of that shortfall would have been recovered in increasing digital sales, but it's unlikely enough units would have been sold over PSN, Xbox Live, and Origin to make up that gulf.

Battlefront II has been shrouded in controversy since its beta in October. Fans accused the game's multiplayer progression system of being confusing and "pay-to-win," before EA tweaked how it worked and later removed microtransactions altogether, albeit temporarily. The company's stock price has since fallen. We awarded the game a 6/10 in our Star Wars Battlefront 2 review-in-progress.

In contrast, Call of Duty: WWII launched two weeks prior to critical acclaim and commercial success. During its opening weekend, the game sold twice as many copies as Infinite Warfare did during the same period last year, taking over $500m in that period. Microtransactions are coming to Call of Duty: WWII, though they've been delayed so lingering server issues could be fixed.

Below the pair of shooters in the UK chart this week lies FIFA 18, while Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon debut at No.4 and No.5, respectively. We enjoyed the pair of new Pokemon games; critic Kallie Plagge said they offer a "fun-filled and uplifting Pokemon adventure" that includes "enough changes to stand apart as the definitive version of the seventh generation games." Read more in our full Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon review.

Other new titles this week include The Sims 4--which has just launched on PS4 and Xbox One following its PC release in 2014--at No.7, LA Noire Remastered at No.8, and Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 at No.10. You can read the full top 10 sales chart below, courtesy of UKIE and Chart-Track. Note this table does not include digital sales data, and so should not be considered representative of all UK game sales.

  1. Call of Duty: WWII
  2. Star Wars Battlefront II
  3. FIFA 18
  4. Pokemon Ultra Sun
  5. Pokemon Ultra Moon
  6. Assassin's Creed Origins
  7. The Sims 4
  8. LA Noire Remastered
  9. Super Mario Odyssey
  10. Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2

Battlefield 1 Black Friday 2017 Ad Deals: All The Sales For PS4 And Xbox One

By Anonymous on Nov 20, 2017 10:29 pm

Black Friday 2017 is only a couple of days away, and this year, retailers will offer tons of deals on games, consoles, accessories, and more for each of the major platforms. While many of 2017's biggest game releases will be on sale, you'll also be able to find hefty discounts on some slightly older titles, including EA and DICE's World War I shooter, Battlefield 1.

If you've yet to pick up Battlefield 1, you'll be able to get the game's complete Revolution edition on sale for either PS4 or Xbox One at select stores. In terms of price, the best deal will be at Walmart; the retail giant will have the game on sale for $29. Best Buy will have it for roughly the same price this Black Friday at $30; My Best Buy Elite or Elite Plus members will be able to pick it up at that price right now. Target, meanwhile, will sell the game for $35. As of this writing, no sales for the PC version have been announced yet.

You'll also be able to find discounts on the digital version of Battlefield 1 ahead of Black Friday. As part of the Xbox Store's Black Friday sale, you can get the base game along with another acclaimed shooter from EA, Titanfall 2, as a bundle for only $40. You can also purchase Battlefield 1's Premium Pass--which normally retails for $50--for $15. The Xbox Store Black Friday sale is currently only available to Xbox Live Gold members, but it will open up to all others tomorrow, November 21.

The PlayStation Store's Black Friday sale is similarly available early for PS Plus subscribers, but its initial lineup of discounts doesn't include any on Battlefield 1. However, that service's sale will likewise open to everyone on November 21 and add more deals that same day, so there's a good chance you'll find similar discounts as in the Xbox Store. We'll update this roundup with any additional offers as they're announced.

Battlefield 1 Revolution bundles the base game together with its Premium Pass, which gives players access to the game's four DLC expansions: They Shall Not Pass, In the Name of the Tsar, Turning Tides, and Apocalypse. The next expansion, Turning Tides, is set to launch in December. If you're unsure if the game is worth picking up, you can read more about it in GameSpot's Battlefield 1 review.

You can see the complete list of Battlefield 1 deals for PS4 and Xbox One below. We'll continue to update the list as more Black Friday ads and prices are revealed. You can find all of our other Black Friday 2017 coverage through the links at the bottom of this roundup.

Early PS4 Black Friday 2017 Deal Gets You PS Plus Membership For Cheap Right Now

By Anonymous on Nov 20, 2017 10:19 pm

Although there were few deals on PlayStation Plus memberships included in the early Black Friday ads that were released, this has turned out to be a good week to subscribe or extend your membership. Those interested in a year of PS Plus can currently pick it up at a nice discount--and you don't even have to wait for Black Friday to actually begin.

A number of the Black Friday offers for PlayStation 4 games, consoles, and accessories have gone live early. In addition to being able to pick up a PS4 for $200 right now, you can purchase a 12-month PS Plus membership for $40 (or £37.50 in the UK). That's $20 less than the usual price, and as cheap as you can ever expect to see it go at most retailers. This price is available right now at Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop. All three stores treat this as a "download," meaning you won't have to pick anything up or wait for a physical card to be mailed to you; a redemption code will simply be emailed to you.

That's good news, too, because being a PS Plus member right now gets you early access to a PSN Black Friday sale. This discounts a variety of recent, big-name games, including Assassin's Creed Origins ($42), Destiny 2 ($39), and WWE 2K18 ($36). The sale expands to non-Plus members on Tuesday, November 21, at which point the number of games included will also increase. We don't yet know what else will be on sale or if Plus members will receive steeper discounts, as is sometimes the case on the PlayStation Store.

Subscribing now also lets you claim November's free PS Plus games, which include Bound and Worms Battlegrounds. In addition to the usual allotment of six games across PS4, PS3, and Vita, you also get a bonus game, the PSVR title Until Dawn: Rush of Blood.

For a full rundown on all the upcoming offers, check out our roundup of all the PS4 Black Friday 2017 deals. We also have extensive coverage of other platforms and retailers, all of which you can see through the links below.

New Star Wars: Last Jedi Images Offer Fresh Look At Rey, Luke, More

By Anonymous on Nov 20, 2017 09:08 pm

Hot on the heels of the new Star Wars: The Last Jedi poster and the latest TV spots, we have a batch of new images. These come via Entertainment Weekly and include shot of the movie's main characters, including Rey, Finn, Kylo Ren, Leia, and Luke.

The pictures also include fresh looks at two of the franchise's newest stars--Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo and Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico. Check some of the images out in the gallery below, and the rest over at EW.

The Last Jedi is directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, and Andy Serkis. It hits theaters on December 15.

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Johnson spoke about his experience of first meeting Star Wars legends Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher. "It took a while before I could sit across the table with Mark and not, every three seconds, think, I'm talking to Luke Skywalker," he said. "With Carrie, I felt we connected as writers very quickly. She spoke her mind, man. They both did.

"Anyone whose life is that weirdly tied to a character like this, where you drop a script in their lap and say, 'Now it's this,' there's no way it's not a discussion. But they were both so engaged in the process, and trusting. The fact that both of them at some point said, 'OK, even if this isn't what I was expecting, I'm going to trust you'--that was really touching."

Unsurprisingly, the movie is expected to have a huge opening weekend at the box office. Early first-weekend projections have predicted that the film will make $215 million in the US over its first three days. While that would be below The Force Awakens' first-weekend haul of $247 million, it would still be the second-biggest of all time, ahead of Jurassic World's $208 million opening in 2015.

In related news, it was revealed this month that Johnson will write and direct a new Star Wars trilogy. Work on the next set of movies will begin after the release of JJ Abrams' Episode IX in 2019. In addition, Disney is planning a live-action Star Wars TV show, which will be available on its upcoming streaming service.

PS4 Pro And PS Plus Get Temporary Price Cut In UK For Black Friday

By Anonymous on Nov 20, 2017 09:04 pm

Ahead of Black Friday this week, Sony has cut the RRP of its PS4 Pro bundles and PlayStation Plus subscriptions in the UK. The PS4 Pro is now available in a number of bundles for £300, while a year's worth of PS Plus now costs £37.50, just below what 12 months used to cost before this year's PS Plus price increase.

Two PS4 Pro deals have come into effect with the price cut: one bundling a PS4 Pro system with FIFA 18 and Call of Duty: WWII, and one featuring either the Jet Black or Glacier White PS4 Pro along with Call of Duty: WWII and Gran Turismo Sport. Both of these bundles will cost £300 (where the system usually costs £340 by itself), a price that is available from now until 11:59 PM GMT on Monday, November 27. The PS Plus offer, meanwhile, applies from "participating retailers" and from the PlayStation Store until 10 AM GMT the following day (Tuesday, November 28).

Finally, a number of games will be discounted by up to 60% on the PS Store from 12:01 AM this Wednesday, November 23. Those discounts are already live for PS Plus members, and they include games like Mirror's Edge Catalyst (£6.19), Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Remastered (£6.19), and Rayman Legends (£5.50). Those deals are good until 11:59 PM GMT on Monday, November 27.

These aren't the only deals Sony has offered recently. The company recently slashed the price of its PSVR and Gran Turismo Sport / Skyrim VR bundles to £300. For more UK-specific deals, check out all the PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, and 3DS games on sale at Game for Black Friday. Alternatively, check out all our Black Friday US deals below.

Former Star Wars Han Solo Movie Co-Director Comments On Being Fired

By Anonymous on Nov 20, 2017 06:46 pm

The upcoming Star Wars spin-off Solo: A Star Wars Story was set to be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, but the pair were replaced by Ron Howard in June, a few weeks before the completion of principal photography. Lord has now commented on their departure for the first time.

The director, who is best known for The Lego Movie and the Jump Street films, was asked about the situation in an interview with Vulture. Lord gives a unsurprisingly diplomatic answer that nevertheless recognises that there were serious differences in the approach to the movie that led to him and Miller being fired. "We had the most incredible cast and crew and collaborators," he said. "I think in terms of us leaving the project, I think everybody went in with really good intentions and our approach to making the movie was different than theirs. That was a really big gap to bridge, and it proved to be too big.

"Sometimes people break up, and it's really sad, and it's really disappointing. But it happens and we learned a lot from our collaborators and we're better filmmakers for it. We're really proud of the work we did on the movie and we wish everybody the best."

No Caption Provided

Although the official statement issued by Lucasfilm at the time of Lord and Miller's exit suggested that it was an amicable departure based on "creative differences," subsequent reports stated that they were in fact fired due to clashes with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy and co-writer and Star Wars veteran Lawrence Kasdan.

Last month it was rumored that Howard had reshot a lot of the film--possibly up to 80% of it. Co-star Thandie Newton subsequently denied that this was the case, but even if the reshoots were less extensive than initially thought, there is no doubt that the length of Howard's production was far longer than the few weeks of reshoots that were initially suggested. Production recommenced in June and didn't finish until mid-October. In addition, the scale of the reshoots meant that at least one role had to be recast, with Paul Bettany replacing Michael K. Williams.

Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, with Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. Woody Harrelson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Emilia Clarke also star. It hits theaters on May 25, 2018.

Rainbow Six Siege DLC For Year 3 Announced, New Maps And Operators Coming

By Anonymous on Nov 20, 2017 04:46 pm

Ubisoft has announced that Rainbow Six Siege will receive a third year of DLC and additional support next year. Over the course of 2018, eight new Operators, two new maps, and one "existing map makeover" will be added to the shooter.

Year 3--as with Year 1 and Year 2--will consist of four seasons, each including two new Operators. The first of those four seasons is called Operation Chimera, which will include "biohazard specialist" characters from France and Russia. It will also include Outbreak, a new, limited-time co-op event. Outbreak is free-to-play for Siege owners, and it will take place over four weeks during Year 3 Season 1.

Following Operation Chimera, Season 2 will include two new Italian GIS Operators and a new map set in Italy. Season 3, meanwhile, will bring one character from the UK's Scotland Yard and one from the US's Delta Force. Additionally, an existing map will be reworked for this season, bringing "considerable changes to level design and art direction." Ubisoft says "the essence of the map will remain the same, but the gameplay and tactics will be completely different." Finally, Season 4 will introduce two Moroccan Operators and a new map from the same region.

Year 3's season pass will be available to purchase on December 12. Little more is known about Year 3 or Operation Chimera at present, though Ubisoft says more will be revealed at the Six Invitational esports tournament in February.

Ubisoft has continued to support Siege since its launch in December 2015. The final season of Year 2, Operation White Noise, arrives soon, bringing with it a new map and three new Operators. For more, check out all the details for Rainbow Six Siege's Operation White Noise.

Siege's previous big expansion, Operation Blood Orchid, was released in September. It included the new Theme Park map as well as three operators: Ela, Ying, and Lesion. Traditionally, Rainbow Six Siege DLC drops have included just two operators, but both Blood Orchid and White Noise contain three due to the dedicated Poland expansion being canceled earlier this year.

Doomsday Clock #1 Successfully Combines The DC And Watchmen Universes

By Anonymous on Nov 20, 2017 01:27 pm

DC's newest event is a self-contained mini-series that pays homage to one of the greatest comic stories of all time, Watchmen, all while introducing it into the DC Universe. This is something we've all known has been coming, since the DC Rebirth one-shot hit comic shops back in May 2016, when fans around the world found out that Dr. Manhattan had a hand in shaping the current DC Universe.

But is Doomsday Clock any good, or does it fall flat like 2012's Before Watchmen series? Obviously, nothing will live up to Watchmen, but judging from the first issue of Doomsday Clock, DC has something special on its hands that adds to the mythos of these characters and the world they inhabit.

The first issue is relatively inclusive. You don't need to be a Watchmen or DC expert to truly understand what this book tries to accomplish. Does it help to have read Watchmen to fully appreciate all the subtle nuances and references? Sure it does, but not having read the original mini-series won't hinder the audience's understanding of the plot, the characters, or the world this all takes place in.

No Caption Provided

Doomsday Clock #1 takes place seven years after the events of Watchmen, and the opening pages do a fine job at delivering expositional narration that doesn't feel like expositional narration. That's because it's introducing us to the narrator--a familiar character who now has an obsession with breakfast--as well as driving the story. The missing years are condensed and the reader is brought right up to speed. There is no time to waste in what seems to be a book that has the potential to change the DCU forever. The story's hook is intriguing, and it's a page-turner with an exciting hook to keep the reader engaged.

Writer Geoff Johns has channeled the pacing and tonality Alan Moore presented in the original Watchmen and put his own twist on it. While Johns is a fabulous writer who has put his stamp on many series, this doesn't feel like a quintessential Geoff Johns book. Watchmen had this underlying idea that you can't trust anyone because an enemy could be around every corner. Johns hits on that sense of paranoia pretty well. He doesn't nail it out-of-the-park in that regard, but he comes close. Where the writing truly shines is in how the book is slower-paced and each scene feels meticulously crafted. Johns' style has changed for the majority of the first issue, and while we can't get into any details within this review, we do see his multiple writing styles--mixing Moore's pacing and structure with his own, contemporary comic writing--within the first issue. It's noticeable when it happens, but this change happens for a reason. Everything happens for a reason in the first issue.

Johns, artist Gary Frank, and colorist Brad Anderson are an exceptionally underrated creative team. Their work on the Action Comics story "Brainiac" is one of the greatest Superman stories ever told. The art team continues to deliver some brilliant visuals in Doomsday Clock #1. Frank's interpretation of the Watchmen Universe works. The layouts are reminiscent of Dave Gibbon's style in the original 1986 book, but Frank is making this story his own. The story feels theatrical and epic, even when it's just a few people riding in a car. In addition, Anderson's colorwork is solid. There is a bit of disappointment that his work has a bit too much depth, as John Higgins's colors in Watchmen were a bit more flat, but Anderson is working within the same color palette as Higgins. However, it would have been nice to see a little more use of purple within the first issue, as that was a big part of the original comic.

Doomsday Clock is an interesting book to say the least. Many hold Watchmen to be a sacred story, one that should be its own separate entity and left untouched. It is a phenomenal book, but Doomsday Clock only adds to that mythos. While it probably won't be as groundbreaking as the original story it follows, the first issue is compelling, and the creative team behind the mini-series is a trustworthy team, one that you should feel comfortable with telling this story. The story feels logical, as the events leading up to this in Rebirth and the Batman/Flash crossover "The Button" have prepared readers for the Watchmen's arrival. Thankfully, it works, and even those who are extremely skeptical of this story will find this first issue worthy of the Watchmen name.

Doomsday Clock #1 hits comic shops on Wednesday, November 22 and will cost $5.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Release Date Announced, And It's Soon

By Anonymous on Nov 20, 2017 11:33 am

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, the Animal Crossing game for mobile that was announced during a Nintendo Direct in October, finally has an official release date. The game will launch worldwide on November 22, according to the game's Twitter account.

Pocket Camp soft-launched in Australia late last month. It's common for big games to launch in smaller markets for the purposes of testing before coming to major regions like North America and Europe.

No Caption Provided

Pocket Camp was initially due out sooner, but Nintendo delayed it to make room for Fire Emblem Heroes and Super Mario Run. While the delay might have been a bummer, the timing of its release good if you're traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday and are looking for something to play on your way to wherever you may be going. What's less than great is Pocket Camp requires an internet connection.

Pocket Camp is free on iOS and Android. Like other free games, Pocket Camp also features microtransactions; you can spend real money to purchase "Leaf Tickets" to speed up your progress. These can also be acquired through gameplay.

Nintendo says Pocket Camp will have have regular content updates, including "seasonal events" along with furniture and outfit items that you can get for a limited time.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 Announced For PS4, Xbox One, And Switch

By Anonymous on Nov 20, 2017 09:59 am

The next Valkyria Chronicles game has been announced. Valkyria Chronicles 4 is due out in Spring 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, publisher Sega announced today.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is set in the same timeline as the previous games, taking place in 1935 in the midst of a World War II-inspired battle between the Atlantic Federation and the Autocratic Eastern Imperial Alliance. "Although the Federation struggles valiantly against the Empire's forces, the relentless imperial military machine threatens to consume them," reads a line from Sega's press release. "With victory slipping away, the Federation executes Operation Northern Cross: a last-ditch attempt to capture the imperial capital and end the war. Commander Claude Wallace and his loyal childhood friends in Squad E are sent to fight for the desperate operation's success, but they will have to endure harsh bone-chilling elements, waves of imperial soldiers, and the terrifying Valkyria... and unravel a grave truth that will shake them to the core."

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is still a tactical RPG, and the art will look familiar in that Sega describes it as having a "vibrant and evocative art style that portrays a living canvas of watercolors..."

The game has all-new characters, including "young Commander Claude Wallace, engineer/heavy weapons extraordinaire Riley Miller, hotheaded Darcsen Raz, ice-cold ace sniper Kai Schulen, and more. Together, they will experience the painful realities of war..."

The combat in Valkyria Chronicles 4 is split between turn-based strategy, RPG, and third-person shooting. New for Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a new class, the Grenadier, along with more battleship support options.

Valkyria composer Hitoshi Sakimoto is coming back to again do the music for Valkyria Chronicles 4. A teaser website for the game has opened, but there isn't much on it. For now, you can check out the first trailer embedded above.

The Valkyria Chronicles series started in 2008 with Valkyria Chronicles for PlayStation 3, followed by a PSP sequel in 2010. The Japan-only Valkyria Chronicles 3 followed for PSP in 2011; it was not released in English, but fans took matters into their own hands.

Justice League Opens Below Expectations In The US

By Anonymous on Nov 20, 2017 06:09 am

The newest Warner Bros. superhero movie, Justice League, opened on Friday and it was a big hit, bringing in $96 million in the US and Canada to open at No. 1, according to Entertainment Weekly. However, that figure is below industry predictions of around $110 million. Not only that, but Justice League is now the first of the five DC Extended Universe films to open with less than $100 million in the US. It's behind Wonder Woman ($103.3 million), Man of Steel ($116.6 million), Suicide Squad ($133.7 million), and Batman v Superman ($166 million).

Despite all of that, $96 million is a huge figure and it's just one piece of the pie. Justice League made $185.5 million from international markets this weekend, pushing its global haul to $281.5 million after just one weekend. The film reportedly had a $300 million budget.

What's not great for Justice League is that its reviews landed all over the place, including poor scores. The film received a B-plus CinemaScore rating, which isn't bad, but also not great. That rating is based on polls of movie-goers.

Justice League has a strong lineup of actors that includes Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and Henry Cavill as Superman. Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Ezra Miller (The Flash), Ray Fisher (Cyborg), and Ciaran Hinds (Steppenwolf) also star in the film.

The No. 2 film of the weekend was Wonder, the drama starring Julia Roberts that made $27.1 million in the Friday-Sunday period. It was only projected to make around $10 million for its opening, so the actual results are quite impressive. The film picked up a very-good A-Plus CinemaScore rating, which suggests second-weekend performance could be strong as well thanks to positive word-of-mouth. From The Perks of Being a Wallflower director Stephen Chbosky focuses on a boy with a facial deformity (Jacob Tremblay) trying to fit in at school. Roberts plays his mother.

Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok came in third this weekend, making another $21.8 million, with Daddy's Home 2 ($14.8 million) and Murder on the Orient Express ($13.8 million) rounding out the top five.

Below are the Top 10 movies at the US/Canadian box office for November 17-19, as rounded up and compiled by EW.

  1. Justice League — $96 million
  2. Wonder — $27.1 million
  3. Thor: Ragnarok — $21.8 million
  4. Daddy's Home 2 — $14.8 million
  5. Murder on the Orient Express — $13.8 million
  6. The Star — $10 million
  7. A Bad Moms Christmas — $6.9 million
  8. Lady Bird — $2.5 million
  9. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri — $1.1 million
  10. Jigsaw — $1.1 million
