Fortnite Season 6 implements numerous big changes in the battle royale mode of the game, at least one of which is completely unintentional on Epic's part: new breast physics. We've reached out to Epic to clarify whether or not they're being completely patched out or simply subdued, but the company is not able to specify its plans right now.
On Twitter, FaZe Agony pointed out that Season 6 updates Fortnite's female avatars so that their breasts jiggle whenever they perform certain movements or dances. Epic has responded to the discovery with the announcement that these movements were not planned to be included in the game. "This is unintended, embarrassing, and it was careless for us to let this ship," said an Epic spokesperson. "We are working now to fix this as soon as possible."
The company did not announce a timetable for when an update might be rolling out, but it sounds like we can expect a hot fix patch soon. Perhaps it will release alongside an update for Fortnite on Xbox One, where a bug is currently making the game unplayable.
Season 6 adds plenty of intended changes to Fortnite, though. There are several new skins, such as a Dire Werewolf, Calamity, and DJ Yonder. Seven new weekly challenges have also been added, with three being for free and another four locked behind paying for Battle Pass. New consumables, called Shadow Stones, allow you to gain the supernatural powers to become invisible or phase through solid objects when you use them, and they're found in the game's new corrupted areas.
Fortnite is available for Xbox One, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS. Sony has released a beta for console cross-play on PS4, making Fortnite the first video game to support online cross-play between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo's consoles.
After weeks of cryptic teases, Season 6 of Fortnite is finally underway on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile, and it has brought some big changes to the popular battle royale game. On top of new locations around the map--not to mention a slew of fresh skins and other cosmetics to get your hands on--Season 6 has introduced a new category of items we never knew we wanted: Pets.
Among the many new rewards you'll be able to unlock with the Season 6 Battle Pass are Pets, adorable companions who'll accompany you as you play. Much like Back Bling, these little guys are worn on your back. They don't have any practical uses--they're purely cosmetic, as with all Battle Pass rewards--but they look cute, and they'll react differently depending on what you're doing; leap a great distance, for example, and they'll hang on for dear life.
Three different kinds of Pets are available thus far, and they're available in multiple colors: Bonsey, a dog; Scales, a baby dragon; and Camo, a chameleon. You can see images of them, along with all of the other new cosmetics and skins you can get your hands this season, in our complete Season 6 Battle Pass rewards gallery.
In addition to the Pets, Epic has introduced a load of new skins in Season 6. Some of these, such as the DJ Yonder and Calamity outfits, we previously got a glimpse of in the teaser images Epic shared leading up to the new season, but there is also a new Red Riding Hood skin and other loosely Halloween-themed rewards to unlock.
Season 6 arrived alongside Fortnite's 6.0 patch, which vaulted several weapons and made tweaks to various others. It also introduced a new type of consumable item called Shadow Stones. You can read more about the new changes in the 6.0 patch notes. You can also find tips on all of the new challenges available thus far in our complete Fortnite Season 6 challenge roundup.
Fortnite Season 6 is live and players on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android have a fresh Battle Pass to level up. This, as with previous seasons, is done by playing the game and completing challenges. Every week there will be a new set of tasks for players to complete.
Like in Season 5, weekly challenges are split into two categories. The first is a free set, which are available to all Fortnite players, while the second is for Battle Pass owners. To get a Battle Pass you'll need to cough up 950 V-Bucks in game. If you haven't bought the Battle Pass, you'll be able to complete certain objectives and earn some rewards, but some of the coolest unlocks are locked behind the paid Battle Pass, so if you plan on sinking lots of time into Fortnite, we recommend picking that up.
Although you can pick up a Battle Pass later and go back to unlock any premium rewards you've earned based on the tier that you've already reached, there is one major advantage in doing it at the start of the season. Namely that you'll get bonus XP, which is dished out for just playing the game either alone or with buddies. This XP levels you up and translates to Battle Stars that also level up your pass, so it may be a good idea to get in early if you can.
Alongside the standard challenges, there are also Hunting Party challenges for those who buy the Battle Pass. These operate similarly to the Blockbuster and Road Trip objectives of past seasons, where each one tasks you with completing all challenges from a single week during the season. The reward for each is a loading screen that reveals the location of a hidden Battle Pass tier you can then obtain. Additionally, by completing seven of these, you'll earn a Legendary skin that will remain a mystery for now.
Each week we'll have guides on the trickiest challenges to make things quicker and easier for you. However, this article will serve as a hub for all our guides so, as the season goes on, you'll be able to keep coming back here to get the latest guides as well as ones for previous weeks. This will be especially helpful if you decided to pick up a Battle Pass part of the way into the season. If you're wondering if it's worth the effort, you can take a look at all of Fortnite Season 6's new skins, cosmetics, emotes, sprays, and other items to unlock in this gallery of Fortnite Season 6 Battle Pass rewards.

Update: Epic has provided some encouraging news regarding the status of Fortnite on Xbox One, but it's still not a fix for the problems it's suffering from. "We're continuing to investigate the crashing on Xbox," it said in its latest post on Reddit. "We believe we have identified and will continue to test the fix. We will release the fix once it has been fully verified." As of yet, there's no timetable for when this will be resolved. The original story follows.
It's an exciting day for Fortnite fans, as Season 6 of Battle Royale has begun with the launch of a new update. Unfortunately for those attempting to play on Xbox One, the game has been rendered unplayable for many, as crashes prevent players from even accessing the main menu.
Reports of issues began coming in after the new 6.0 update went live. Epic has confirmed on Reddit that it's aware and investigating the problem. Its most recent update states, "We are continuing to investigate crashes occurring on Xbox. We appreciate your patience and will update you once we've resolved the issue." That came at 6:30 AM PT / 9:30 AM ET / 2:30 PM BST, and there's been no further word as of the time of this writing.
This is a more significant than average issue, given that for Xbox players, it renders the game unplayable. After reaching the Press A screen, it proceeds to load but then freezes before you're able to access the Save the World or Battle Royale menus. That means you can't even get to the screen showing off the adorable new pets Season 6 has introduced.
Of course, with cross-play for Fortnite now extended to PS4, you can jump in with your account on any platform and return to playing on Xbox One once the issue is resolved. That requires you to have another system to play on, but if you're eager to see the newly revamped map, even your phone might suffice.
Fortnite: Battle Royale Season 6 is now live, and that means another Battle Pass is available for your upgrading pleasure. As usual, you can grab it for 950 V-Bucks (about $10 in the US), and Epic estimates it will take about 75-100 hours to unlock all of its goodies. This season gets spooky with some distinctly Halloween-themed loot as "Darkness Rises."
Buying into the Battle Pass lets you complete seasonal and weekly challenges to earn XP and gain cosmetic unlockables. Each Battle Pass has 100 levels to earn in all, so grinding out the highest tiers of rewards takes quite a while. As a shortcut, you can also buy additional tiers for 150 V-bucks each, or a bundle of the Battle Pass and 25 tiers for 2,800 V-Bucks ($25 in the US).
This season, you're competing for skins, back bling, and emotes that look an awful lot like Halloween costumes. Those include a robot llama DJ, a grinning fruit-head, Red Riding Hood, and a big bad wolfman. The level 100 reward is the Dire skin, which progressively transforms you into a werewolf as you level it up. You can check out our full rewards gallery for everything you could earn.
This season also adds Pets that can follow you around the battlefield and dynamically react to whatever you're doing. So far there are three pets: Bonsey, a dog; Scales, a baby dragon; and Camo, a chameleon. These are also available as cosmetic rewards, so you can further customize your character to your liking.
The first trailer for Dark Phoenix is here. The movie is the latest entry in the X-Men series, and tells the classic story from Marvel's comic books. It stars Sophie Turner, Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Jennifer Lawrence and arrives in February.
In the first trailer, we see how Jean Grey (Turner) came to find herself at Xavier's school and how her powers were uncontrollable. Charles Xavier did what he could to help Grey with her growing mutant abilities, but it all unravels in this new movie, and she's become powerful enough to take on the X-Men alone. Check it out above.
Dark Phoenix is directed by Simon Kinberg, who will make his directing debut after years as a writer and producer on X-Men movies. The cast also includes Michael Fassbender, Tye Sheridan, Olivia Munn, Alexandra Shipp, and Kodi Smit-Mcphee. Dark Phoenix was originally set to hit theaters in November, but in March it was pushed back, along with the much-delayed X-Men spin-off New Mutants.
Dark Phoenix and New Mutants, which now arrives in August 2019, will most likely be the last X-Men movies that are separate to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is expected the the upcoming purchase of Fox's entertainment assets by Disney will integrate the X-Men characters in the MCU.
In a recent interview, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige could take charge of the X-Universe as well. "I think it only makes sense," Iger said. "I want to be careful here because of what's been communicated to the Fox folks, but I think they know. It only makes sense for Marvel to be supervised by one entity. There shouldn't be two Marvels."
To say that Red Dead Redemption 2 is highly anticipated is an exercise in understatement. The sequel to the critically acclaimed open-world western Red Dead Redemption is the first new title from Rockstar Games in five years, and part of the reason for that anticipation is likely due to the fact that at the time of writing, a month out from its full release, very few people have actually witnessed it in action.
A number of GameSpot staff members recently had the chance to see and play a near-final build of Red Dead Redemption 2. The one and a half-hour demo comprised of two story missions and a chance to goof around freely in the open world, and there's a lot to unpack about how the game looks and plays. Red Dead Redemption 2 feels familiar in many respects, but new systems have piqued our curiosity with their initial impression of intricacy and depth.
Warning: Everyone has a different tolerance for spoilers. We played two story missions during our time with the game, and while we will go into the details of these missions, we didn't think there were any major plot revelations. However, some relationships and cameos might come as a surprise to anyone who has been avoiding coverage of Red Dead Redemption 2. If you'd prefer to go into the game with zero story information at all, consider avoiding the following article. This will be the only spoiler warning.
It's 1899, and outlaw gangs are on the way out as America modernizes. An early story mission opened our demo session, with Rockstar staff at the controls, depicting protagonist Arthur Morgan and his gang leader Dutch Van der Linde tending to a bloodied and bandaged John Marston (told you there'd be spoilers) as they recuperate from a previous job gone south. Marston's recently injured appearance strongly suggests that we'll find out how he got his signature scars, though his wife, who enters with their son Jack, seems more annoyed than anything. The most senior gang members are eager to retreat and move camp to evade pursuers, but Dutch is adamant that some of the gang goes and pursues a train robbery he has a lead on.
As Arthur, Dutch, and a group of men sets off for the train heist on horseback, we're treated to what is now a staple of Rockstar open-world games: storytelling through character dialogue while traveling to a mission. However, Red Dead Redemption 2 features a new implementation of Rockstar's familiar cinematic camera mode to keep these moments interesting--the cinematic camera will now automatically trigger and frame the journey with a montage of shots that emphasize the landscape and traveling group. You can break out of it at any time, but it's a nice touch and an enjoyably filmic framing of what might have otherwise been a dull journey. As long as you hold X on PS4 or A on Xbox One to keep your horse on pace with the pack (like RDR1), you can just sit back and enjoy the naturally-flowing conversation and scenery. This feature can also be triggered manually during gameplay.
The gang rode down from a mountain that was covered in thick snow, with each wearing an appropriately warm outfit. Our Rockstar reps explained that the game's clothing options would be comprehensive--each character will have different sets to coincide with weather conditions, while customizations would allow layering and minor adjustments, like the option to roll up your sleeves. We weren't able to confirm whether particular sets of clothing would carry perks like the original game.
The rolling scenery we saw during this journey was impressive--snowy mountains gradually transitioned into a more temperate environment, with the snow noticeably thinning out and greenery starting to peek through as we descended in altitude. Spending time watching the horses, too, was impressive. Their manes flapped in the wind, their hoofs left imprints in the snow and dirt, and their animations looked natural as they turned and transitioned between speeds gallops.
As the gang pulled up to a ridge overlooking the railway ambush, it was already sunset. Arthur was asked to check up on fellow member Bill Williamson (who you'll likely be familiar with as the first major target in Red Dead Redemption) as he prepares TNT by the rail tracks. Williamson was depicted as a short-tempered simpleton back in the first game, and that remains true here. Our Rockstar representative mentioned that Red Dead Redemption 2 aims to act as both a prequel and companion piece to the first game, so Williamson's introduction at the beginning of both may suggest some broad parallels.
After moseying down to chat with the flustered Bill Williamson, you're asked to help by unspooling a length of wire and connecting it to a TNT detonator. The flow between cutscene, interactive moments, and canned animations appeared smooth here, and once the train arrived, some elegant editing helped heighten the moment, quickly cutting between the gang, the train, and the TNT. But, perhaps unsurprisingly, the TNT fails to go off. Williamson messed up. The tension between the gang members gets heated as they quickly fire off blame and run to intercept the train on foot. They reach a nearby overpass and hastily leap onto the roof of the speeding train, accompanied by a noticeably gripping score (Woody Jackson returns as the game's composer).
Arthur lands without any trouble, but his first course of action is to help those who haven't. A fellow gang member named Lenny hangs off the side of the train, and a short quicktime action is required to pull him up. From here, Lenny and Arthur made their way down off the roof and into the carriages, moving towards the front of the train. The first encounter with guards was handled stealthily, and used to showcase the game's new gang interactions--the option was given to let Lenny take out the guard, or we could simply head in and do it ourselves. Looting and picking up bodies are returning mechanics (though they have more detailed and involved animations), and as we moved through the densely decorated carriages we noticed that it was possible to search drawers for loot.
In the next carriage a gunfight occurred, and while Red Dead Redemption 2's shooting feels mechanically similar to the original, the look and communication of impact appears to have been heightened--screen shake was more pronounced with each shot, the sound of discharges was satisfying. It's also notable that in Red Dead Redemption 2 you can physically see all your weapons on Arthur's character model--you can hold only hold two sidearms and two long weapons (along with a knife, lasso, and throwables), and when switching from a rifle to a sidearm Arthur would simply hold his rifle in one hand while he aimed his pistol with the other. Dual wielding is also an option later in the game.
That detail was pitched as a holdover from Max Payne 3--Rockstar specified to us that Red Dead Redemption 2 was not just the result of one Rockstar Studio, but the company as a whole, each bringing their previous experience to contribute to their latest effort. Another holdover from Max Payne 3 was the dynamic kill cam that kicked in once you had eliminated the last remaining enemy, the look of which would vary depending on Arthur's overall honor in the game. Being ruthless will apparently make these kill cams gorier, and being honorable will make them appear more heroic in nature.
Red Dead's take on bullet time, Dead Eye, also returns. If you're familiar with it, it works as you'd expect, only it now has five discrete levels. The first three provide the same abilities as the first game: time slowdown, automatic target painting, and manual target painting. We were told that one of the new abilities is highlighting critical hit areas on enemies, something that would be useful for clean hunting kills, but whether this ability has two different stages is unclear--there may be an additional dead eye ability we haven't learned of yet.
Once Arthur and Lenny reached the locomotive engine Arthur was ambushed by the train engineer. Here, we transitioned into a fist fight. Rockstar reps explained that the melee combat system had been expanded, but it was hard to break down the mechanics during this brief encounter. We saw some grappling, blocks, and a range of punches before Arthur finished the engineer off and pulled the brakes on the train. It was night by this point.
The gang regrouped by the side of the train and after some verbal warnings, all unleashed a hail of bullets into the side of the train's armored carriage in a brief hip-fire tutorial. Arthur and another gang member moved to blow the door up--the animation of them casually tossing a stick of dynamite looked noticeably natural--and they proceeded to ransack the inside of the carriage for valuable goods. Here, we were shown the ability to pick up and inspect loot, as well as other environmental narrative objects like notes. This all happens in-world, with the game's camera cutting to a first-person perspective as Arthur's hands physically manipulated things.
Once the gang was done looting, Dutch and the rest headed back to camp, leaving Arthur to decide what to do with the hostages they had taken while emptying the carriage. Rockstar explained that like the first game, you would have a range of choices here, and your decision would affect your honor meter. No decision was made in our demo session.
We grabbed the controls for the next portion of the demo, where we were dropped into a free-roam area during broad daylight. It was located in a more temperate part of the world, New Hanover to be exact, and we started overlooking a vista where we were able to spot the mountains from the previous segment far in the distance. We learned a lot about the game's new features from messing around during this portion by visiting towns, taking a closer look at the camp, and trying to discover in as much as possible. There was enough in there to make us feel overwhelmed, and wonder about how much we had yet to see.
We've compiled all of our nitty-gritty observations of the game's mechanics in a separate article, so if you're interested in learning about all the new thing features and systems in Red Dead Redemption 2, make sure you spend some time reading through this companion piece: Red Dead Redemption 2: All The New Features
As night fell again, we started to ride back to the Van der Linde camp, pushing the boundaries of our horse (who will completely collapse, tumble, and throw you off if you try and get it to trot down a steep slope), acting like buffoons (holding up on the d-pad with your gun unholstered will let you fire warning shots in the air, scaring off animals and people) and whistling non stop (Arthur will whistle for as long as you hold the button, and will eventually run out of breath).
The next mission was initiated from camp, where Dutch, Bill Williamson, and Arthur attend to a captured member of a rival gang, Keiran of The Driscolls, who is tied up to a tree. In an attempt to coerce him to reveal the location of his gang's whereabouts, Bill Williamson prepares red-hot boltcutters of some description and threatens to basically cut Keiran's testicles off. Rockstar games are no strangers to torture but this cutscene, though tense, was played for laughs more than anything. Keiran folds and agrees to help the three Van der Linde men.
After a long ride out to a location within a forest, the four men approach the rival camp quietly. A nearby patrol stops to let one of its members relieve himself, and again we were given the option to send in Bill to take care of things or do it ourselves. Unfortunately, our stealth takedowns attracted too much attention from the rest of the patrol, and we quickly took cover in the trees and used a mix of pistols, rifles, and our bow to thin out the defending force. Red Dead Redemption 2 still features a similar kind of auto-aim assistance to the previous game, whereby zooming in with the left shoulder button will snap your cursor to an enemy--helpful because we found bodies hard to make out amongst the forests' dense foliage, and we didn't have a scoped weapon. We were reminded again how familiar shooting felt to Red Dead Redemption, but it was nonetheless still satisfying to confidently line up a string of headshots with the bow using Dead Eye.
Once we had taken out the majority, the rest of the gang fled. After some brief time spent looting bodies and experimenting with the environmental systems--dumping a corpse onto a fire will cause it to catch alight, though we didn't have time to test the effects of fire on grass and trees--we moved to the house in the middle of the camp. A cutscene triggered where Arthur is knocked on his feet by a hidden opponent, and Kieren, the Driscoll member, switches allegiances and saves Arthur. The result is that the gang reluctantly welcomes Kieren into the gang as a Van der Linde member, and Rockstar told us that this would be a common scenario. Gang members will both come and go, some as part of the story, and some as part of the choices you make as Arthur.
A lot of work has obviously been poured into the game's world, animation and cinematic presentation, in an attempt to create an experience that looks to impress you at every stage. It's little surprising how superficially familiar Red Dead Redemption 2 feels at first--this absolutely plays like a Rockstar Games title. But that's not a bad thing, and there's a lot to be said for the sheer amount of new, intricate systems which apply to the world, your weapons, your horse, Arthur himself, and how all of that can interact. We've only had the briefest of glimpses at the laundry list of genuine additions, but the level of depth that they suggest is certainly an incredibly enticing prospect, and we can't wait to experiment with them further.
If you'd like to learn even more about our experiences with Red Dead Redemption 2 so far, be sure to also take a look at our companion article dedicated to the game's new mechanics:Red Dead Redemption 2: All The New Features
As is to be expected from a new project that Rockstar has been working on for years, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an incredibly dense open-world game that's jam-packed full of details. We recently got to go hands-on with the high-anticipated sequel, and while playing we discovered numerous mechanics and details that go above and beyond those from the original Red Dead Redemption. While the game features improvements to pre-existing mechanics, there are light survival systems this time around. These require you to pay attention to things like your body temperature, gun maintenance, and meat expiration. As fans of the original, all of these new details are surprising and unexpected. But what has us the most enthused about it all is how these mechanics are likely to foster tons of ridiculous shenanigans in the game's world--especially once Red Dead Online releases.
We got to experience many of the new systems at work--most of which you can read about in our comprehensive feature compiling them all. But there were some fascinating standouts we wanted to highlight that we feel will contribute to some of the game's most memorable and entertaining moment-to-moment experiences. Included in this feature are nine of the most unexpected mechanics and details in Red Dead Redemption 2.
If you haven't already seen our Red Dead Redemption 2 preview covering the story missions we saw, make sure to read it for our in-depth impressions on the game. Though, if you want to get caught up with everything there is to know about Red Dead Redemption 2, check out our roundup of everything we've learned about RDR2. In the meantime, what details are you most excited to experience in Red Dead Redemption 2? Let us know in the comments below.
Clothes Make The Outlaw
The game's clothing customization options are comprehensive--each character will have different sets to coincide with hot and cold weather conditions. The type of clothes you wear will affect Arthur's performance. For example, if you wear a weighty jacket during a hot summer day, your running stamina will take a big hit.
Other customizations will allow layering and minor adjustments, like the option to roll up your sleeves or tuck your pants into your boots. Whatever you end up choosing, you're free to craft Arthur into the high plains drifter you want him to be.
You Can Fire Warning Shots And Whistle For Fun
By having your gun unholstered and holding Up on the d-pad, you can fire warning shots into the air. This is handy for intimidating people, scaring off animals, or generally being a rowdy buffoon while you're riding around.
Speaking of possible buffoonery, you can even whistle at people to get their attention or call your horse. And if you keep holding down the button, you can keep whistling until Arthur runs out of breath. Imagine combining both warning shots and whistling; you'll become the countryside menace you've always dreamed of being.
Your Guns Can Degrade And Jam
You need to take care of your weapons in Red Dead Redemption 2. You have the option to clean them, which is incredibly important to do regularly because guns can jam mid-fire due to disrepair and environmental conditions. You don't want to be caught with a rusted gun--lest you seek to dig yourself an early grave.
Hunted Materials Can Rot And Be Damaged
The components you acquire from hunting all have an expiration date. If you're not careful, time will eventually take its toll and both the fresh pelt and carcass you've acquired will start to rot and attract vermin, reducing its value and making you generally unpleasant to be around. Not only that, but if you use a firearm to kill an animal as opposed to an arrow or knife, its pelt will be damaged and will sell for less at local stores.
Cleaning, Grooming, And Feeding Yourself
Speaking of unpleasantness, NPCs will react not just to the stink of your rotting deer corpse, but also if you haven't taken a bath in a while. Arthur needs to get clean and change his clothes every once in a while, since townsfolk may refuse to talk or serve him based on his appearance--having blood on your jacket doesn't attract the best reactions.
Time also has an effect on Arthur's hair, which actually grow longer. Customizing Arthur's haircut and facial hair styling is also dependent on length since you're allowed to cut things shorter, but won't have access to options that require more hair--a more realistic take on customization compared to GTA V. Of course, you're welcome to not pay attention to grooming. In fact, you can totally rock the mountain man look by just letting Arthur's hair and facial hair grow to its max.
Arthur will need to eat to keep his health and stamina meters up, but will also lose and gain weight depending on his food intake. He'll have to stay active in order to keep in top shape.
You Will Get A Camera
We started a side quest during our time with Red Dead Redemption 2, and the mission giver handed Arthur a camera. This camera could be used at any time via your inventory, and yes, the first thing we did was take a selfie.
These aren't arm-out handheld selfies, though. The mode is titled "self-portrait" and will frame Arthur's whole body as if the camera were set up on a tripod. You'll be able to adjust expressions and poses, too--expect to see a whole bunch of self-portraits depicting Arthur squatting in front of various things on Twitter once the game releases.
You Can Lose Your Hat
If you're not careful, you can easily lose your hat in the midst of a shootout. If you drop your hat, you need to physically pick it back up to get back to looking like a proper outlaw. Though, if you ride away from your hat, it'll appear as an icon on the map. However, it will reappear back on your horse if you go too far away. Alternatively, Arthur can swap his hat for any other one that just happens to fall off someone else's head. Sometimes you just have to adjust your style on the go.
There's A Killcam That Changes Depending On Your Honor
When you take out the final opponent during a gunfight, a killcam will frame that final blow a la Max Payne 3. This will change depending on Arthur's moral standing: If you've been a naughty cowboy, these kill cams will be gorier. If you've been upstanding and honorable, they'll be framed in a more heroic fashion like those from the classic film Westerns of old.
You Can Break Enemy's Weapons
Speaking of heroic behavior: if you want to go the more non-lethal route, it's possible to shoot weapons out of enemy hands. Not only that, but you can even shoot at their weapons and break them. This seems like a handy technique if you're looking to be an outlaw with a heart of gold as opposed to a straight-up cold-blooded killer.
Horse Dressage And Drifting Techniques
Horses are an important part of Red Dead Redemption 2, but it seems like they're far more capable creatures than they've ever been in previous games. During our hands-on, we were able to rear our horse on its hind legs, perform drifts to change direction quickly (apologies to equestrian enthusiasts), and move our horse precisely by performing dressage techniques.
The follow-up to Rockstar Games' classic western game Red Dead Redemption is fast approaching. Set 12 years before the events of the original game, Red Dead Redemption 2 will explore an expansive region of the American wilderness, with Dutch Van der Linde's gang on the run from lawmen during the last years of the wild west. Experiencing Rockstar's take on the open-world western from a new perspective, you'll uncover the history of the Van Der Linde gang, which has a young John Marston in its thralls.
We got the opportunity to play Red Dead Redemption 2, and suffice to say, it's shaping up to be one of the most detailed open world games we've ever played. You can find out more in our preview below where you can read about our experiences completing story missions and exploring the game's world. There's also plenty of details below on the game's narrative and all of its trailers. With its release date of October 26 approaching, we're beginning to learn a lot more about the base game, as well as its Red Dead Online mode.
Set 12 years before the main events of the original game, the prequel focuses on the outlaw life of the Van der Linde gang, led by Red Dead Redemption's main antagonists. After a robbery in Blackwater (one of the original game's major towns) goes bad--the gang finds themselves on the run. Dutch, his right-hand man Arthur Morgan, and several members of the gang have to contend with a life on-the-run while confrontations with rival gangs and the law make their situation grow more desperate.
Rockstar also released a description of the plot:
America, 1899. The end of the wild west era has begun as lawmen hunt down the last remaining outlaw gangs. Those who will not surrender or succumb are killed. After a robbery goes badly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee. With federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, the gang must rob, steal and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive. As deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, Arthur must make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him.
The First Reveal
Debuting on October 20, 2016, the first trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 was a bit of a mood piece that showcased many locales in the game, while also portraying the somber tone of the main narrative. In this trailer, we saw several towns and locales, many of which are teeming with life and activity--such as ranchers rustling up some cattle, huntsmen bringing back their haul, and a group of citizens hanging out in the general store.
Who Are We Playing As?
Though the central character of Red Dead Redemption, John Marston, plays some role in the story--the main protagonist of the prequel is Arthur Morgan. As Dutch's right-hand man and enforcer for the gang, he'll handle much of the daily duties of keeping the gang in-check--which includes a young and less-experienced John Marston. When it comes to keeping the gang and its community afloat, Morgan is quite handy with picking up various jobs to ensure everyone is well fed and in good spirits. But as the story progresses, he'll begin to question his own resolve for Dutch's way of life, and whether he still has a place in the gang.
The Second Trailer
On September 28, 2017, the second trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 debuted. In the new footage, we got to see more of Arthur Morgan and how ruthless he can be while on the job. During some of the story cutscenes, Morgan will use coercion and physical threats to collect money and information, all for the "benefit" of the community. For more info on this particular trailer, check out our detailed breakdown.
Who's In Dutch's Gang?
In Red Dead Redemption 2, we'll see Dutch's gang and its key players in their prime. While the original game had John hunt down and kill the remaining members of the gang, we'll see many of the familiar faces in relatively happier times. From the most recent trailer, we see Dutch Van der Linde, Arthur Morgan, Bill Williamson, Javier Esquela, Sadie Adler, Charles Smith, Micah Bell, Hosea Matthews, and of course John Marston in the roster. We'll also interact with other characters who would have a key role in the gang and in the lives of both Arthur Morgan and John Marston.
The Third Trailer
In the new footage released on May 2, we saw a deeper look into the game's narrative and how the gang functions. Along with the familiar activities like hunting, heists, and side-quests with the region's citizens, rob trains and banks, and take in shows at theaters. For the most part, the trailer focuses on the many connections you'll have with the members of the gang, as well as how your choices will affect them. For more info on the third trailer, check out our detailed breakdown.
First Gameplay Trailer
On August 9, Rockstar unveiled Red Dead Redemption 2's first gameplay trailer. The new footage revealed that the core mechanics from the original game were still intact, but almost everything had received a facelift. Wildlife is smarter and lives within its own ecosystem. Arthur Morgan can interact with the people around him in ways John Marston never could.
What's New In Red Dead Redemption 2?
While the sequel is largely in the same vein as its predecessor, focusing on exploration, hunting, shoot-outs, heists, and other side-activities where you'll interact with a number of unique characters--Red Dead Redemption 2 features a far more expansive world to dive into. We got our first good look at this world and how we'll be playing through in Read Dead Redemption 2's first gameplay trailer below.
The honor system from the original game makes a return, but now with far more detailed tracking. Along with the average citizen, members of your community will react to how well or how poorly you treat them. As the lead enforcer, Morgan will have to handle a ton of responsibilities, such as resource gathering, procuring funds, and making sure everyone in the community is happy.
There are a ton of new mechanics in Red Dead Redemption 2. For details on every new feature in the game so far, check out our comprehensive list of all the new features we've discovered so far.
How It Plays: Our In-Depth Preview
We recently got a hands-on with a near final-build of Red Dead Redemption 2. It plays much like its predecessor, but with a bevy of new features and systems that enhance its storytelling, combat, and overall progression. We got to experience two story missions, as well as a chance to goof around freely in the open world. There's a lot to unpack about how the upcoming sequel looks and feels, so be sure to read our in-depth preview detailing our impressions about how it plays.
How Will Online Multiplayer Work?
Currently, Rockstar hasn't shared any info on how the online play will function. The original Red Dead Redemption featured online free-for-all and team deathmatch style gameplay in the open world, along with several co-op themed missions. While it's safe to assume that these sorts of missions will return, another long-lingering rumor is the appearance of a battle royale mode. Rockstar has recently confirmed that a public beta for the online mode is scheduled for a month after the game's launch.
How Can I Play RDR2? When Is Its Release Date?
Red Dead Redemption 2 is set for release on October 26 for PS4 and Xbox One. There are also plans for a collector's edition of the game called the Special Edition. Priced at $80, the package includes a copy of the game along with special missions, weapons and a physical map of the game world for players to own. There are also two additional packs for Red Dead Redemption 2 for premium prices, The Ultimate Edition and The Collector's Box--both priced at $100. While The Ultimate Edition has all items from the special edition--including additional DLC items to acquire--The Collector's Box does not include any digital items. Instead, it offers special playing cards, artwork, a bandit's bandana, a physical map of the game world, and a collector's coin in the set.
Though the original Red Dead Redemption never found its way to the PC, there's been some rumors that its sequel might. A mention of Red Dead Redemption 2's appearance on PC found its way online, but it has since been scrubbed.
PS4 Pro Bundle
Although the system itself doesn't sport a unique design, there will be a Red Dead Redemption 2 PS4 Pro bundle. Priced at $400 in the US, you're essentially getting a copy of the game for free. However, this doesn't include any of the aforementioned special editions; it's just a standard edition version of the game. The bundle is available for pre-order now.
One of the biggest changes added to Fortnite in Season 6 is the introduction of a new consumable called Shadow Stones. Using one allows you to transform into your Shadow Form, which gifts you with a couple of supernatural powers.
In Shadow Form, you won't be able to use weapons, but whenever you stand still, you'll go completely invisible. You'll still be slightly visible whenever you move in Shadow Form, and walking around leaves behind a Shadow Trail that people can easily follow. Running around isn't all that bad though, as you'll have increased movement speed and jump height, and you won't take fall damage.
The true fun comes in your other supernatural ability, Phase. Using Phase propels in whichever direction you're facing. If there's something in your way, like a rock or a wall, you'll pass right through it. With Phase, you'll be able to easily escape anyone who discovers your Shadow Trail, or scare someone with your ghostly apparition in an ambush.
Shadow Form only lasts up to 45 seconds--and can be ended early by holding down the Alt Fire button--so you'll have to figure out when's the best time to use a Shadow Stone after you've found one. Shadow Stones randomly spawn around the map, but can usually be discovered in corrupted areas.
Fortnite Season 6 also puts Impulse Grenade, Suppressed Submachine Gun, Light Machine Gun, Bouncer, and Remote Explosives into the Vault. Grapplers have been updated so that connecting to a moving object incorporates its momentum into your launch force, and the charge for Grapplers has been reduced from 15 to 10.
Fortnite is available for Xbox One, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS.
Fortnite: Battle Royale Season 6 is finally here and, alongside it, developer Epic Games is rolling out patch 6.00 for the game. The arrival of a new season means there's new Battle Pass content to unlock, as well as some changes to the game world and how you play the wildly popular battle royale title. To give us a complete breakdown of everything new or changing with the latest update, Epic has released the Fortnite 6.0 patch notes, which you can read below.
The headliner is the new Battle Pass, which delivers 100 levels and over 100 new rewards, according to Epic. It is available to purchase in-game for 950 V-Bucks. You can also choose to just stick to the free Battle Pass, but some challenges and reward are exclusive to the paid tier. The other big new addition is Pets, which allow you to adventure around the island with an adorable friend by your side. Beyond those new additions, Epic has also introduced a consumable called Shadow Stones and updated the map with new locations such as the Floating Island, Corn Fields, and Haunted Castle.
In terms of weapons, the Impulse Grenade, Suppressed Submachine Gun, Light Machine Gun, Bouncer, and Remote Explosives have all been thrown into the Vault. However, all of the weapons and items added to the Vault as part of patch v6.0 are available to use in Playgrounds for now. Take a look at the full patch notes below to see what else is going on with the battle royale mode. You can find details on how patch 6.0 impacts the Save The World mode here.

In related news, Sony surprised everyone by announcing that PS4 cross-play is finally happening. For select third-party games, players on PS4 will be able to connect with people on other platforms. Fortnite happens to be one of these games, and a beta for cross-play is available now. Fortnite will allow for "gameplay, progression, and commerce" across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, Mac, Android, iOS.
"We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community's continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution," John Kodera, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, previously said. "We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective."
Season 6 of Fortnite has begun, which means players across PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile have a slew of new cosmetics and other items to earn in Epic's popular battle royale game. Just as in previous seasons, Epic is rolling out a set of challenges every week throughout Season 6. Finishing these will help level up your Battle Pass, which in turn will unlock rewards. If you manage to clear all of the challenges in a given week, you'll also complete a Hunting Party challenge--Season 6's equivalent of Road Trip challenges.
Just as before, the reward for completing a Hunting Party challenge is a special loading screen, which features a subtle hint pointing to the location of a free Battle Star hidden somewhere around the island. If you complete one week's set of Season 6 challenges, you'll earn the loading screen below, which shows off a group of characters gathered in a farm.
The area depicted in the loading screen is located in the desert directly east of Paradise Palms, and if you peer closely enough, you can notice the faint silhouette of a Battle Star above the tractor in the background of the screen. Fly to the area at the start of the match, head to the lone tractor, and you'll find the Battle Star waiting to be collected. Pick it up and you'll level your Battle Pass up by one tier.
If you need a more visual guide on where to find the Battle Star, you can see the exact location of the farm on the map below. We've also put together a video of us collecting the Star above so you can see exactly where you need to go. However, as was the case with Season 5's Road Trip challenges, the Battle Star will only appear if you've completed the requisite challenges and unlocked the above loading screen; you won't be able to find it if you haven't done the necessary steps.

The release of Fortnite: Battle Royale Season 6 means that there's a brand-new Battle Pass, which in turn offers a whole bunch of new cosmetic goodies for players to work towards unlocking. Of these, arguably the most coveted will be the skins/outfits, and Fortnite Season 6 has quite a few cool ones to check out.
Two of these skins are Legendary tier and have a cool touch where they evolve through different stages, becoming more detailed as they go along. The first is the Calamity skin, which begins as a female character rocking a cowboy hat, a white tank top, and some shorts. However, as the skin evolves she gets a bandana, a coat, and eventually a long coat (making her look like a Bloodborne hunter), which is then adorned with neon purple trim.
The second Legendary outfit is called Dire, which is unlocked by reaching the max rank of level 100 with the paid Battle Pass. The male character starts off fairly simple, wearing some jeans, a red zip-up jumper, a biker coat and a red headband. However, the iterations on the skin go full Teen Wolf, as he grows a snout, fur, sharp teeth, eventually becoming a full on werewolf complete with shredded clothes, talons, and a 'tude.
The other skins are also pretty neat. DJ Yonder is Fortnite's llama if it was a member of Daft Punk; Giddy-Up has your character looking like it's riding on a llama; Fable is inspired by Little Red Riding Hood; Dusk has a vampiric theme; and Nightshade features a well-dressed jack-o'-lantern. You can take a look at those skins above.
There's plenty more beyond skins to unlock as part of the Season 6 Battle Pass, however, and the other emotes, back blings, contrails, sprays, and banner icons are all very cool. You can see everything in our gallery of all the Fortnite Season 6 Battle Pass rewards.
The first week of challenges is also upon us and, as always, we've got a breakdown of what you'll need to do here. The hardest challenge for Week 1 can be found in the paid Battle Pass tier and involves finding seven Streetlight Spotlights and then dancing beneath them. We've put together a map of where we found them, and a video, so you can use these to get it done too. Check out our Fortnite Season 6 Week 1 challenge guide for more details.
Bethesda has released a new trailer confirmed the release date of the upcoming Fallout 76 beta. As we previously knew, it'll come to Xbox One before other platforms--the beta begins for Xbox One on October 23 and on October 30 for PlayStation 4 and PC.
In an FAQ for the beta, Bethesda stressed that its purpose is to "stress test and break the game," which means that servers will be "online during targeted timeframes so we can get as many people as possible playing at the same time." Although specific times have not yet been confirmed, the company said the play sessions could last anywhere between four and eight hours. Overall, the beta will go on until a few days before launch.
Bethesda also said that players should expect things to go awry, as beta versions of games tend to do. "The [beta] is a work-in-progress version of the game," it explained. "During the [beta], you will likely see a glorious array of issues; many we know about, and many we don't. Our goal, with your help, is to identify and fix any issues that arise in preparation for the November 14 launch. We need all your suggestions and feedback during [beta], at launch, and beyond to make Fallout 76 the best experience possible, now and for years to come."
To play the beta on PS4 and Xbox One you'll need a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold membership. Since Fallout 76 is an online title, the final game will also require these subscriptions. The only way to get access to the beta is to pre-order the game at participating retailers or directly from Bethesda.
The beta will weigh in at 45 GB and is not available to pre-load. PC players will not need to re-download the game when it is officially released, but those on console will need to download a launch version. Currently, Bethesda is planning for progress from the beta to carry over to the full game."
Fallout 76 launches in full on November 14 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. On PC, the game will only be available through Bethesda's own launcher, not Steam. On September 26 Sony announced cross-play functionality is being introduce for certain third-party titles, including Fortnite. However, Fallout 76 is not included among these titles yet.
Bethesda marketing boss Pete Hines said on Twitter: "I work with a lot of devs and games for whom this is important going forward. Fallout 76 does not support cross-play, for a number of reasons. I have no idea if it ever will. But I assure you it is not on our radar right now as we focus on [beta] and launch."
Bethesda has also released the opening video from Fallout 76, which you can watch here or above.
The streaming giant Netflix is about to unleash a plethora of new content on its streaming service for the month of October. Starting on the first of the month, new movies, TV series, and Netflix originals will trickle out onto the service, with new content being added pretty much daily. It can be a lot to go through, but don't worry, we will be highlighting some choice picks for you to check out.
Returning for a second season on October 5 is the adult animated comedy Big Mouth. Comedians Nick Kroll and John Mulaney star as two adolescent boys going through puberty. The raunchy series has the duo trying to understand life, girls, and everything else while dealing with hormone monsters and uncomfortable moments in early sexuality.
Speaking of returning Netflix originals, Castlevania comes back for a second helping on October 26. The series follows Trevor Belmont as he fights the evil forces of Dracula. Season 1 writer Warren Ellis returns, picking up on the huge cliffhanger from last year with Alucard. This season will add more episodes for a total of eight, doubling up from Season 1's four.
As far as movies and television go, October 1 is when Netflix will release most of its content. Out of everything coming out that day, you'll want to watch/rewatch the classic '80s adventure movie The NeverEnding Story or the first rated-R Marvel movie that matters--sorry, Dolph Lundgren's The Punisher--Blade. Additionally, Blade II will be available as well. Also, Season 4 of Gotham is coming to Netflix as well, and you can see just how crazy this series has become for yourself.
Sadly, there are a few great items leaving the service as well. The fantastic comedy series Freaks and Geeks is on its way out on October 1, along with Sin City and The Lost Boys. Even though Halloween is right around the corner, The Babadook is headed out on October 14 and V/H/S 2 leaves on October 24.
Check out the complete list of everything coming and going from Netflix below, and if you're looking for more news from streaming services, we have complete October arrivals lists from Hulu and Amazon Prime Video as well.

October is almost here, and Amazon Prime Video is releasing a whole new batch of content for you to binge, from movies to TV series to original content. There is a long list of new stuff being added, but we have a few suggestions for you to check out. Here's what you have to look forward to in the upcoming month.
Because Halloween is right around the corner, you're probably looking for a few scares, and Amazon Prime has you covered. Coming on October 1 is Clive Barker's Nightbreed. Craig Sheffer plays Aaron Boone, a rebel who is drawn to a place called Midian, where deformed monsters live. Boone becomes one of the monsters himself, and a serial killer tries to make Boone a scapegoat. It is Barker's most underrated film as a director or writer. Additionally, the Jim Carrey horror/thriller The Number 23 hits the service, and while it is not a good movie by any means, it is an entertaining movie to watch.
As far as Prime Originals go, The Man in the High Castle returns for Season 3 on October 5 and Lore gets a second season on October 19. Also, the Amazon children's series Tumbleleaf gets a Halloween special on October 19.
Below, you'll find a full listing of everything coming to Amazon in October. The vast majority of the service's releases for the month will be on Friday, October 1. If you're looking for more subscription service releases for October, check out what Hulu has in store next month.

Halloween is right around the corner, at the end of October, and Hulu has quite a few choices in horror films being added added to its streaming service. Additionally, Hulu has new TV series being added and a couple of Hulu originals. Get your queue ready for Monday, October 1 when a good portion of Hulu's offerings become available for the month.
If you're looking for some classic, Halloween scares, look no further than 1999's The Blair Witch Project. It follows a group of documentary filmmakers who travel to the woods of Maryland to uncover the truth of a local myth involving a legendary witch. They quickly find out that this isn't a myth at all. The film began the found footage genre of the '00s. And if you're looking for more in this genre, you should check out the Rec series. The movies revolve around a virus infecting the brains of its host, turning them into zombie-like creatures. Rec was remade in 2008 under the title Quarantine. All four movies in this Spanish horror series Rec are arriving the same day, October 1.
If scares aren't your thing, and you're looking for something a little lighter, then you'll want to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas, which comes out on October 2. The classic claymation movie unites Christmas and Halloween in one bizarre movie, which is totally fitting for director Henry Selick (Coraline) and writer Tim Burton (Batman). Also, the tongue-in-cheek action movie Starship Troopers heads to Hulu on October 1, in case you want to watch Casper Van Dien shoot some oversized guns.
Sadly, there are some great movies leaving the service. On Halloween, 28 Weeks Later, There Will Be Blood, Sixteen Candles, Any Given Sunday, and more will be leaving, so make sure to watch those before they're gone forever.
Check out everything coming and leaving Hulu below as well as our recommendations for new and returning TV shows for the Fall that will surely be awesome.
Here's what's coming to Hulu in October

We all love playing video games, but with new titles going for $60 or more depending on the edition, the hobby gets expensive fast. Thankfully, many gaming retailers have regular sales to save you money. But even so, it's hard to know if you're getting the best deal available at any given time. To help solve that problem, we've gone through the week's video game sales and highlighted the best game deals for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
Before looking at the discounts, though, you should make sure you've picked up all the free games you can get. PlayStation Plus members can download some fantastic games for free this month, including Destiny 2 (for next month's freebies, see the video above). Xbox Live Gold subscribers can also grab a few freebies right now, and if you're an Amazon Prime member, you can get five free PC games from Twitch.
With that out of the way, let's look at this week's best discounts on individual games.
Madden NFL 19
The latest installment of the best football game franchise around is $20 off this week.
September 26, 2013 was Outbreak Day, the day the fungus zombies in The Last of Us took over the country. Each year, Naughty Dog celebrates Outbreak Day by putting The Last of Us Remastered on sale.
A roguelike inspired by classic Zelda games, The Binding of Isaac has you pick up all kinds of weapons and abilities as you explore a monster-filled cellar--just try not to step in the piles of poo.
Like the previous entries in this strategy series, Civilization VI starts you out with a small settlement and has you build it into a colossal world power.
The first week of Fortnite Season 6 is here, so you have a whole new set of challenges to complete. The first three are free, with the remaining four locked behind the game's Battle Pass.
Despite it being a new season with several major changes, there isn't anything drastically new with what you'll have to do to complete all seven challenges. If you've been keeping up with Fortnite these past few months, then this week's challenges should all be fairly familiar. The first three free challenges will net you a total of 13 Battle Stars, and completing the four Battle Pass challenges rewards you with another 16.
We've listed the seven challenges and their respective rewards below.
Fortnite Season 6, Week 1 Challenges
Free
Pick up a Legendary Item in different matches (3) -- 5 Battle Stars
Regain health from a Cozy Campfire (15) -- 5 Battle Stars
Stage 1: Seach Chests (3) -- 3 Battle Stars
Battle Pass
Apply Shields (500) -- 5 Battle Stars
Stage 1: Land at Junk Junction (1) -- 1 Battle Star
Dance under different Streetlight Spotlights (7) -- 10 Battle Stars
Eliminate opponents in different Named Locations (5) -- 10 Battle Stars
The third Battle Pass challenge will probably take you the most time to complete just because you need to find the seven spotlights to dance under. Each spotlight is pretty easy to spot--look for streetlights that have a speaker playing music--but you'll still need to trek across the entire map to find them all.
Below is our map of the eight spotlights we've found, which should help speed up the process. Remember, you only need to dance under seven of them.
Fortnite is available on Xbox One, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS. Sony has relented on its previous stance against console cross-play with Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, so Fortnite now supports cross-play across all platforms.
Sony has been resistant to allowing cross-play between PlayStation 4 and other consoles, even for the mega-hit Fortnite: Battle Royale. That changed this week with an open beta allowing cross-play functionality, but those who have already spent time unlocking rewards or buying Battle Passes might still find it frustrating to juggle separate accounts with their own loot. Thankfully, Epic has a few tools to smooth that over in the works.
According to a brief statement on Twitter, the studio is working on two tools. The first, coming within a few days, will allow players to unlink a Fortnite account from one console and then relink it to another account. The announcement didn't give word on whether this option would be unlimited. The more expansive tool, coming in November, will allow users to merge accounts and combine all of their Battle Royale purchases together.
The first seems like a stop-gap solution while waiting for the more complete one to come later this year. Still, it should reduce some of the issues with players who may have chosen one console over the other despite their actual preferences, simply because of the cross-play situation.
The lack of cross-play on PlayStation 4 led to some criticism from competitors like Microsoft and Nintendo, which used their social media accounts to poke fun at Sony's stubbornness. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney called PS4 cross-play "inevitable," so it's likely the studio has been working on these tools since seeing the writing on the wall.
The timing of this is quite fortunate, as Season 6 of Battle Royale has begun with the release of a new update. It's brought with it new skins, map changes, a Battle Pass, and much more.
Telltale Games made the announcement on Friday, September 21, that it was enacting a "majority studio closure." This resulted in hundreds of jobs being lost at the San Rafael, California-based studio behind adventure games in the Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Batman universes.
It was a sad and shocking announcement that sent waves through the industry. How could this have happened and what happens next? We've put together a roundup and timeline to help you get up to speed on all the important developments so far, dating back to last year up through recent events like the ex-employee's lawsuit and halting of sales for Walking Dead's Final Season. We'll keep updating this post in the days and weeks ahead as new details and information comes to light.
March 2017:
Telltale CEO and founder Kevin Bruner announces he is leaving the company. It is later reported that Bruner was forced out as he clashed with the company's board of directors. Telltale's other co-founder, Dan Connors, takes over as CEO.
September 2017:
Telltale hires former Zynga executive Pete Hawley to become the company's next CEO. Before Zynga, Hawley was a production lead at Fable studio Lionhead, working alongside Peter Molyneux on that series from 1993 to 2003. He then spent time with Sony (2003-2005), then EA (2005 to 2010).
November 2017:
One of Hawley's first major moves as CEO of Telltale is enacting a huge round of layoffs in which the company cut 25 percent of its workforce, which amounted to around 90 people at the time. The layoffs impacted "all divisions" at Telltale, and were part of Telltale's ambition to become "more competitive as a developer and publisher"
December 2017:
Telltale's CEO Pete Hawley talks to GamesBeat about the layoffs and the future of Telltale. He rejects the idea that Telltale is in trouble, stating he feels the company is in "really good shape." The layoffs were necessarily to help Telltale succeed in the future, Hawley said at the time.
March 2018:
A deeply sourced report from The Verge alleges that Telltale operates under a culture of heavy, expected crunch pushed by toxic management. Among the many shocking claims in the report is that employees worked as many as 18 hours per day for weeks on end.
September 20, 2018:
According to Variety, Telltale management informs employees that its negotiations with media giant AMC for more funding were "going well," with the company expected to complete the funding process in the coming weeks. There was also reportedly a deal being negotiated with South Korean mobile game giant Smilegate for more funding.
Smilegate and AMC both apparently leave negotiations with Telltale on Thursday, just hours before an eventful Friday. The reports offered no explanation for why AMC and Smilegate left negotiations on the same day. Variety previously reported that movie studio Lionsgate also decided to pull out of a financial deal with Telltale.
September 21, 2018:
According to reports, Telltale Games holds a meeting where it informs more than 200 developers that they were losing their jobs right then and there. According to Variety, employees were given paper paychecks for pay through the end of the day. They reportedly were instructed to leave the building within 30 minutes (employees were allowed back in for a period of three hours on the following Monday to collect personal belongings). The affected staffers received no severance pay, and their health care cover reportedly only extended to the end of the month. Management told employees they should consider applying for unemployment benefits.
Former Telltale CEO Kevin Bruner writes a blog post on his personal website talking about how he clashed with Telltale's board of directors about the future of the company. He shares no more information about what he and the board disagreed over. Telltale's board of directors includes Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer, former Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello, and others.
Telltale's official statement explains that the company is undergoing a "majority studio closure," with only around 25 people remaining on board to "fulfill the company's obligations to its board and partners." CEO Pete Hawley, who joined Telltale in September 2017, says it was an "incredibly difficult year" filled with "insurmountable challenges" for Telltale. He says he is proud of Telltale's efforts, but at the end of the day, its efforts "did not translate to sales."
Dan Connors, Telltale's co-founder, tells Variety that Telltale had "no choice but to stop production" after it failed to close another round of financing to keep the company afloat. "Sadly, everyone was so focused on doing what was required to keep the company going that when the last potential partner backed out, there were no other options," he said.
September 24, 2018:
One former Telltale employee, Vernie Roberts Jr., files a class-action lawsuit against Telltale for unpaid wages and benefits that he claims Telltale owes him and other affected staffers. Roberts Jr. claims Telltale violated California's WARN Act, which states that an employer must provide 60 days written notice about a mass layoff. There are some exceptions to the federal WARN Act. Attorney Richard Hoeg, who is not working on the case, tells GameDaily that Telltale may be able to deem the situation an "unforeseeable business circumstance" to remain in compliance with the WARN Act. However, California a version of the WARN Act unique to the state that does not include the "unforeseeable business circumstance" clause.
Later that day….
Telltale Games announces that "multiple potential partners" expressed some level of interest in helping Telltale to complete and release The Walking Dead: The Final Season. The company shared no information about who these potential partners might be. Additionally, Telltale says it can make no promises about ever releasing Episodes Three and Four. Even if they are released, Telltale warns fans that they might only come out "in some form."
Also on September 24, Netflix announced that it is evaluating its options to continue production on Telltale's Stranger Things game with a different partner. The streaming giant also confirmed that it plans to go ahead with releasing Minecraft: Story Mode on Netflix as planned.
September 25, 2018:
The Walking Dead: The Final Season's second episode launches as planned, but it's not the only major development this day. The game's $20 season pass, which provides access to episodes 1-4, was removed from sale on all major digital storefronts including PS4, Xbox One, and PC. A statement from Telltale says the company is pausing sales until further notice.
Some other notes and notable facts
Telltale was founded in 2004 by former LucasArts developers Kevin Bruner, Dan Connors, and Troy Molander.
Telltale's publicly disclosed funding partners included the venture capital firms IDG Ventures and Granite Ventures, along with the film company Lionsgate.
Of the seven named executives on Telltale's management website, four, including Hawley, are former Zynga higher-ups.
Telltale has not filed for bankruptcy.
There is no word yet as to what will happen with the previously announced second season of Telltale's Wolf Among Us.
Telltale also operates a publishing division that is behind the upcoming adventure game Stranded Deep from a two-person studio in Australia. The developer, Beam Team Games, does not know if it will be able to release the game on console in October as planned.
Telltale plans to provide a deeper update on its portfolio in the coming weeks.
Sony has announced that cross-play between PlayStation 4 and other platforms is coming to Fortnite. In a statement posted on the PlayStation Blog, Sony Interactive Entertainment said it has "identified a path towards supporting cross-platform features for select third-party content." The first of these third-party titles is Fortnite, and an open beta has begun that allows for "gameplay, progression, and commerce" across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, Mac, Android, iOS.
"We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community's continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution," said John Kodera, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment. "We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective."
As previously mentioned, in addition to enabling players across the various platforms Fortnite is available on to play together, progress will be preserved over the different platforms and, more importantly, any purchases and unlocks will also be shared, which is good news for dedicated Fortnite players.
"For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective," Sony's statement continues. "Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform."
It also notes that this "represents a major policy change" and Sony has said it is "now in the planning process across the organization to support this change." Further details will be provided on specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles in the future. In the meantime, cross-play in Fortnite on PS4 is live.
The subject of cross-play on PlayStation 4 has been a sore issue for the last few months, especially as the popularity of Fortnite has skyrocketed and other platforms have enabled the functionality. In the past, Sony remained bullish on maintaining a closed online environment. Sony's CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida, for example said the PlayStation 4 was simply the best place to play, suggesting that there was no need for PS4 owners to connect with players on other platforms.
This stance drew criticism from other high-profile people in the video game industry, most notably from Xbox boss Phil Spencer and corporate vice president of Xbox, Mike Ybarra, who said Sony "still isn't listening to gamers" about the cross-play situation.
Tim Sweeney, the head of Fortnite developer Epic Games, later said that he believes it is in the industry's best interest to allow gamers on competing platforms to play together, and added that he believes cross-play is "inevitable." With Sony now on board, Sweeney has been proven right.
The cross-play beta arrives on PS4 in time for the start of Fortnite Season 6, which has begun on all platforms.
After months of resisting cross-play, Sony has finally given Fortnite players on PS4 the ability to play with those on other consoles. The platform's cross-play open beta is now available, just in time for Season 6 (now live), enabling "gameplay, progression, and commerce" in Epic's massively popular battle royale game across PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices.
This move marks a dramatic reversal in Sony's stance on cross-play. The company has come under fire over the past few months for not allowing Fortnite players to play with and share their progress across platforms, despite that functionality being available in other versions of the game. Sony's response to the issue was that PS4 was simply the best place to play, suggesting that there was no need to allow cross-play with other platforms, but fans and other video game industry leaders were unsatisfied by the company's answer.
Sony announced its change of heart in a post on the PlayStation Blog. "Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content," Sony Interactive Entertainment president John Kodera wrote. "We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community's continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution."
It's currently unclear just how long this "extended open beta" will last, but its timing is quite fortuitous. Season 6 of Fortnite has officially begun, so players will be able to play with and continue their progress on other platforms. This is especially handy, as Epic introduced a new Battle Pass for purchase, which can be leveled up to unlock special cosmetic skins and other rewards.
Blizzard is once again offering a BlizzCon Virtual Ticket so those who can't attend in person can take part in some of the festivities from home. But this year, Virtual Ticket holders can actually try an otherwise exclusive demo of World of Warcraft Classic.
According to the announcement, home viewers will be able to download the BlizzCon WoW Classic Demo that will be playable on the show floor for attendees starting on November 2 around 1 PM PT. That will include two early-level zones, one for the Alliance and one for the Horde. It will be available until 10 AM PT on November 8, so those who attended BlizzCon in person will have time to go back home and play more of it themselves as well.
Virtual Ticket holders will also receive commemorative items to display their faction alliance, available starting today. You can equip the War Mantle of the Alliance or the Horde, and the Stormwind Champion's War Banner or the Orgimmar Hero's War Banner.
Other goodies include a Legendary Demon Hunter skin for Sombra in Overwatch, a variety of Heroes of the Storm cosmetics, and as-yet unannounced bonuses for Diablo, Hearthstone, and Starcraft. The Virtual Ticket costs $50--an increase of $10 from last year--and also gives you access to watch extra broadcasts and panels from the show floor. BlizzCon will kick off on November 2.
As part of Fortnite: Battle Royale Season 6, developer Epic Games has given the Island on which people build, break, loot, and kill as part of the game's Battle Royale mode some tweaks. As detailed in the Fortnite update 6.0 patch notes, there are a number of new locations to check out, and the map has been updated to reflect this.
Although it might be tricky to tell exactly what's changed without actually being on the ground and exploring yourself, there's a few changes that you can see on the map immediately. First of all, loot lake is now been blackened, with a smaller land mass visible in the middle. This landmass is now a floating island, which players can reach by gliding onto it, building up to it, or jumping into the lake and being bounced up to it.
The other big change to the map is the new corrupted areas, which you can see on the map as black spots. These provide a nice new visual change for players to enjoy, but there also might be some secrets hidden away in them. The patch notes outright name four new locations for Season 6: Floating Island, Corrupted Areas, Corn Fields, Haunted Castle. However, the notes also advise players to "drop in and find the rest in-game," so there's bound to be plenty more. Take a look at the new-look map above.
The other major new addition that arrives with Season 6 is Pets. As you might have guessed, this feature allows you to play the game with a little critter joining you on your journey. There's also a new consumable called Shadow Stones.
The latest updated also throws the Impulse Grenade, Suppressed Submachine Gun, Light Machine Gun, Bouncer, and Remote Explosives into the Vault. However, these weapons and items are available to use in Playgrounds. Take a look at the full Fortnite update 6.0 patch notes here.
Fortnite Season 6 has begun, which means it's time for a fresh start with a whole new Battle Pass. As with the previous season, we'll be here every week to give you a complete breakdown of all the newest challenges, the rewards you'll get for completing them, and guides for getting them done as quickly and easily as possible. For those new to this, here's a quick breakdown of how everything works: By completing weekly challenges you'll earn Battle Stars that level up your Battle Pass and unlock certain rewards. However, challenges are split into two tiers, with some only available to those that have spent 950 V-Bucks in-game on a paid Battle Pass.
For the first week of Season 6 there's a nice selection of challenges available in both the free and paid tier. In the former, you'll need to grab a Legendary Item in three different matches, use a Cozy Campfire to restore 150 points of health, and begin a multi-stage quest by searching three chests. Once those three have been searched, more stages will open up.
In the paid tier, meanwhile, you'll need to apply 500 points of shield, land at Junk Junction to kick off another multi-stage quest, dance under seven Streetlight Spotlights, and eliminate an opponent in five different named locations. If you manage to complete any four of these challenges you'll earn 5K XP.
Of all the challenges the one that'll require you to put in the most time is likely to be the one that asks you to dance under seven different Streetlight Spotlights. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to get this done, as you'll simply have to trek around the Island and keep your eyes open for the spotlights. Thankfully, there's visually distinct, so that should make things a bit easier. What you're looking for is a streetlight that has a speaker on them, which will be playing music. Once you've located one, stand directly beneath it and bust a move. Then it's off to find the next one.
We've put together a map of all the Streetlight Spotlights we've found, so you can take a look at it below and head to the locations to speed the process up. We've also recorded ourselves completing the challenge, so you can watch us do the challenge in the video above above and follow along. It's worth noting that there's more than seven Streetlight Spotlights, the ones in the map and videos are just the ones we've spotted.

Alongside the start of Season 6, developer Epic Games has released Fortnite update 6.0, introducing Pets, throwing some items and weapons into the Vault, making tweaks to the map, and adding in new consumables. You can read all about the new additions and changes in the full Fortnite update 6.0 patch notes.
Epic kicked off Season 6 of Fortnite this week with the release of the game's 6.0 patch on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. As expected, the update made some big changes to the battle royale game, introducing a handful of new weapons and locations to the map, on top of the extensive list of cosmetics and rewards that can be unlocked with the Season 6 Battle Pass. However, players may notice that a few popular weapons are no longer available.
As part of the 6.0 update, a handful of weapons have been moved to the "vault." This isn't unusual, as Epic periodically removes items from the game in order to further tweak them or make room for new ones, but this time, the developer has vaulted a larger-than-usual cache of weapons. Specifically, Epic has removed the Impulse Grenade, Suppressed Submachine Gun, Light Machine Gun, Bouncer, and the Remote Explosive.
This means that you'll no longer be able to come across any of the aforementioned weapons while playing Battle Royale. They may be reintroduced to the game at a later date; Epic has said that vaulted items could be re-added to the arsenal in a future update, but for the time being, you won't find any while scrounging around for loot. However, Epic notes that the weapons will still be available in Playground mode.
In their place, Epic has introduced one new consumable item to the game called Shadow Stones. These can transform you into Shadow Form for a brief period of time; in this form, you'll be unable to use any weapons, but you'll appear invisible to other players when you're stationary. Epic has also made tweaks to a handful of other weapons; namely, the Double Barrel Shotgun's damage output has been reduced, while the Grappler will now take into account momentum when you fire it at a moving object.
Epic has outlined all of the other changes the 6.0 update makes in the patch notes on its website. There are a lot of new cosmetics and other new items to get your hands on with the Season 6 Battle Pass, such as Pets. You can see everything in our Season 6 rewards gallery. You can also find guides on how to complete the latest challenges in our Season 6 challenge roundup.
Epic Games has done a fantastic job of ensuring that Fortnite keeps its fans engaged by regularly dropping in fresh content to unlock and giving aspects of the gameplay new twists. For Season 6, there's a whole bunch of new items to unlock, but also plenty of gameplay opportunities to discover, ranging from bouncing around on Loot Lake to turning into ghosts by using the Shadow Stone. Those are just a couple of them, but below you'll find a complete breakdown of everything new to Fortnite from the Season 6 update.
Fortnite Update 6 Full Patch Notes
Fortnite Season 6 launched alongside patch 6.0, which introduces a number of new features, changes, and tweaks. In addition to the Battle Pass refresh, which delivers over 100 new cosmetic items to unlock, there's Pets, location overhauls, weapons and items put in to the vault, and more. Check out the full Fortnite 6.0 patch notes for all the details.
New Locations
The island on which Fortnite's battle royale takes place has undergone multiple changes across the various seasons thus far, and Season 6 is no different. Epic Games has confirmed that there are at least four new locations to check out: Floating Island, Corrupted Areas, Corn Fields, and Haunted Castle. Players have been directed to "drop in and find the rest in-game," indicating there are further secrets to be found on the island.
Battle Pass Skins And Other Rewards
With over 100 new cosmetic items to unlock as part of the Battle Pass for Season 6, Fortnite players are going to have a busy time grinding challenges and racking up kills in Battle Royale. To give everyone a target to strive for, we've put together a complete gallery of every reward in the Battle Pass, so you can see all the skins, bling, sprays, emotes, banner icons, and music added in the season.
Cool New Evolving Skins
We've got a specific article where you can have a look at the new skins. Although all the skins are cool, there's two specifically that are particularly worthy of attention. The first is a Legendary skin called Calamity, which levels up and transforms a female character from a standard model wearing a cowboy hat, shorts, and a t-shirt to someone straight out of Bloodborne. Similarly, the Dire legendary outfit takes a male character and transforms him into a werewolf, clearly inspired by the movie Teen Wolf.
Battle Pass Details
Here's everything you need to know about Fortnite Season 6's Battle Pass. Although players can complete challenges and unlock some rewards without having to pay money, to make the most of Fortnite Season 6 you'll need to purchase a Battle Pass, which is available in-game for 950 V-Bucks.
Pets
The other big new addition is Pets. There are currently three of them, and they'll hang with in your time in the game. There's three Pets in total right now, and you can see them here. Naturally, they're very cute, but they also react to the world around them, growling when you enter combat and looking terrified if you jump from crazy heights, which is a nice touch.
