Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura Designs New Play Arts Kai Figure Of Joker [UPDATE]

By Anonymous on Jun 01, 2017 10:52 pm

Update: The Nomura-designed Joker figure is now available for preorder in the US through Square Enix's online store. It's priced at $300 and is expected out this October.

Original Story: Square Enix's popular Play Arts Kai line of figures is getting a new addition later this year. Like some of those we've seen in the past, this one features a design by one of the company's most prominent developers.

The Joker figure pictured below was designed by Tetsuya Nomura, who is best known for his work on the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts series (he's currently directing both Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake). The figure--which was first revealed at New York Comic-Con last year--stands 285 mm tall (about 11 inches), according to an Amazon Japan listing, and offers quite a bit of customization.

The figure comes with seven different facial mods, with different faces and masks available to equip. There are are also different hand options and a set of machine-like arms that appear to be quite flexible in terms of how they're used. You can see all of this in the gallery above (images via Figsoku).

Square Enix has not yet announced a western release for the figure, although the company has released many of its Play Arts Kai figures around the world in the past. This particular one arrives in Japan on September 30 for 32,184 yen (about $288/£222).

Nomura's other contributions to the Play Arts Kai line have included Batman, Catwoman, and Monster Hunter 4's Rage armor. Monster Hunter and Batman aren't the only non-Square Enix franchises that Play Arts Kai has covered--we've also seen figures based on Halo 5, Iron Man, and Captain America, among many others.

Next Free Amazon/Twitch Prime Game Now Available

By Anonymous on Jun 01, 2017 10:30 pm

The latest free game to be offered through Twitch has been announced, and you can pick it up right now.

Gone Home, the story-based adventure game, is now a free download for anyone with a Twitch Prime membership (which is one of the perks of Amazon Prime). It can be claimed for free from now through June 7.

You can add Gone Home to your library by visiting the game's Twitch page. Claim your copy from there and you'll be able to download and play the full game through the Twitch desktop app.

Gone Home was critically acclaimed upon its original release back in 2013. In GameSpot's review, critic Carolyn Petit awarded the game a 9.5, stating, "With excellent writing and remarkable attention to period detail, Gone Home turns the process of exploring a house into a captivating and deeply poignant journey of discovery."

Twitch offers free PC games to Prime members from time to time, although availability doesn't follow the same sort of schedule as PlayStation Plus or Games With Gold. The past few weeks alone have offered Deponia, Titan Souls, and Oxenfree.

Here's Another Look At Switch's Limited-Edition Monster Hunter XX Console

By Anonymous on Jun 01, 2017 10:14 pm

The recently announced Switch version of Monster Hunter XX is releasing alongside a special-edition console when it launches in Japan this August, and now some new images of the bundle have made their way online (via fansite Japanese Nintendo).

The bundle includes a copy of the game and a Monster Hunter-themed Switch. Capcom had previously shared a picture of the console's dock, which is emblazoned with a Monster Hunter pattern, but the new images reveal that the Switch itself also has a Monster Hunter trim and design on its backside. Along with that, we have a clear picture of the box that houses it all.

Monster Hunter remains one of Japan's biggest game franchises. News that the game would be coming to Switch helped bump Nintendo's rising stock to its highest point since October 2008. The special-edition Switch bundle sold out almost immediately after it was announced, though there's no telling if Capcom will begin selling the empty box (as Nintendo is doing for the Splatoon 2 bundle).

Monster Hunter XX is also available for 3DS, though that version is likewise only available in Japan. Capcom hasn't announced if it plans to bring either version to the West, but the publisher has localized other recent installments in the series, including the original Monster Hunter X, which is known here as Monster Hunter Generations.

New Tropico Game Teased With First Trailer, Shows President Who Likes Tweeting

By Anonymous on Jun 01, 2017 09:43 pm

It appears that a new Tropico game is on the way: Calypso, developer of the banana republic-building series, has released a short teaser video starring Tropico's authoritarian main character, El Presidente.

The teaser begins with a few clips from radio broadcasts that all refer to current events. "Plans for the wall have been approved," one says, possibly referring to President Donald Trump's calls for a border wall between Mexico and the United States. "The UK has left the European Union," another states, alluding to the recent vote on Brexit.

Then, the video shows El Presidente picking up his phone and using a Twitter-like social media platform to post, "Time to get back into the game." You can see the video above.

Although the video is titled simply "Rule Again" and Calypso hasn't yet announced a title, it seems like a good bet that it's Tropico 6. "In times of political turmoil and social unrest, the people are calling out for a visionary leader, one who will steer the fate of their country with foresight and ingenuity," the video description reads. "Will you answer that call?"

This game is planned for a 2018 release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. If you want to read more about the Tropico series, check out our review of Tropico 5 here.

Need For Speed Reveal Confirmed For Tomorrow

By Anonymous on Jun 01, 2017 09:25 pm

After a year away, Need for Speed returns later this year. Having already confirmed the game, EA plans to officially unveil the next entry in the series tomorrow, June 2.

The franchise's Twitter account tweeted out the image below, promising a "full reveal" of the game at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET / 2 PM BST. It also includes a link to the official YouTube channel, suggesting we'll be getting a trailer then. We'll have all the details here at GameSpot as they're announced.

No Caption Provided

EA published what may have been a teaser image of the game earlier this week. By turning down the brightness, you can make out what appears to be the Seattle skyline, including the Space Needle. A setting has not yet been announced, but that's a detail we'll likely learn about tomorrow.

Like the 2015 reboot, this new Need for Speed is developed by Ghost Games--but it will not require an online connection in order to play, as that game did. Customization and police pursuits will be a part of the game, but beyond that we don't know much else currently.

The new Need for Speed is due out sometime this year for unspecified platforms. The previous game was released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Nintendo Switch's Splatoon 2 Headset Is One Clunky Setup

By Anonymous on Jun 01, 2017 09:15 pm

Splatoon 2, Nintendo Switch's colorful and chaotic shooter due out next month, will feature voice chat in multiplayer mode. We've now gotten a look at the (hefty) Splatoon 2-themed headset that will launch alongside the game courtesy of the Splatoon 2's Japanese Twitter account.

No Caption Provided

Fans no doubt expected something a little less clunky, with this configuration including a splitter that allows you to hear both voice chat from your phone and game audio from the system itself. According to an image published by 4Gamer, the splitter's cables are less than 20 inches long. The site also reports the headset will cost about US $32. We still don't know if you'll be able to use other headsets in the game.

In March, Nintendo revealed Splatoon 2 would have voice chat, using smart devices to link up to eight different Nintendo Switch systems together for local multiplayer.

Meanwhile, Splatoon 2's Japanese players are getting a Switch bundle with the game, neon green and pink Joy-Cons, and game stickers. A similar colored Switch Pro controller is being released and, last month, Nintendo began offering an actual empty Splatoon 2 bundle box for preorder for anyone who wants the packaging but already owns a Nintendo Switch.

Middle-earth: Shadow Of War Release Date Delayed

By Anonymous on Jun 01, 2017 09:00 pm

Middle-earth: Shadow of War, the sequel to 2014's Shadow of Mordor, has been delayed from its intended August release date. The follow-up will now launch worldwide on October 10, 2017.

In a blog post, developer Monolith stated the reason for the delay was to ensure Shadow of War delivers "the highest quality experience."

"Middle-earth: Shadow of War expands gameplay in every dimension, including the massive open world, the story, the RPG systems, and personal player stories of the Nemesis System," the developer said. "As with Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Monolith is committed to delivering the highest quality experience. In order to do this, we have made the difficult decision to move our launch date to ensure that Middle-earth: Shadow of War will deliver on that promise.

"We understand that it might be disappointing to have to wait a little longer for the release and are sorry for the delay, but we are working hard to make an amazing game. We're excited to show more at E3."

The open-world game was originally slated to launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on August 22 in North America. Today's announcement therefore represents a delay of almost two months. Although the new October date applies "worldwide," Monolith stated in its blog post that Australia and New Zealand's release dates may vary.

The developer recently said that the title, which is set in the same universe as The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, will not be coming to Nintendo Switch. For more on Shadow of War, read our recent preview here, or some new fort assault gameplay here.

Killer Instinct, Divekick Dev's New Game Looks A Lot Like God Of War

By Anonymous on Jun 01, 2017 08:59 pm

Iron Galaxy is often associated with fighting games, as it developed the last two seasons of Killer Instinct and the two-button fighter Divekick. But its new game, called Extinction, is an action game that looks similar to God of War or Attack on Titan.

The studio announced Extinction today with a cinematic trailer. In the game, players will fight against massive, 150-foot-tall ogres and armies of other creatures. Iron Galaxy describes the gameplay as built upon a "dynamic skill-based combat system," which requires players to "tactically disarm and dismember enemies" to weaken them before they can be killed. Check out the trailer below.

Although this isn't a gameplay trailer, it still gives an idea of the tone and style that Extinction is aiming for. Although there is certainly a level of gravitas given by hulking monsters rampaging through a city, the art looks stylized and colorful.

According to a press release, gameplay will be fast and fluid. You can wall-run, vault using your whip, and attack from the air as well as from the ground. In addition, environments will be destructible.

Extinction will have a story and sidequests, but it'll also have a custom battle editor that lets you create battles with different objectives. You can then challenge other people to complete these battles.

Iron Galaxy is planning to show off more of Extinction at E3 2017, so keep an eye on GameSpot for more news about the game in the coming weeks. It will launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC sometime in Q1 2018.

Another Stylish Platformer Coming To Nintendo Switch In 2018

By Anonymous on Jun 01, 2017 08:43 pm

505 Games is bringing the beautiful platformer/RPG hybrid Indivisible to Nintendo Switch, the publisher announced today.

Developed by Lab Zero, the studio behind Skullgirls, Indivisible takes players through a fantasy world inspired by various world cultures and mythologies. The game stars a young girl named Ajna, who discovers she has a mysterious power that allows her to "absorb certain individuals into her being." On her journey, she'll team up with "dozens" of other characters to battle foes and stop the warlord who destroyed her home village.

Indivisible was initially announced for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game was partly funded through a successful Indiegogo campaign and features a soundtrack scored by Hiroki Kikuta, the composer of Secret of Mana.

Indivisible is due to arrive for all platforms simultaneously in 2018. In the meantime, players who backed the title on Indiegogo will receive a special preview on PS4, Xbox One, or PC "in the coming weeks."

New Book From Lord Of The Rings Author Published 100 Years After It Was Written

By Anonymous on Jun 01, 2017 08:27 pm

Although J.R.R. Tolkien is best known for The Lord of the Rings, he wrote many other stories during his life. Over the years, several of his earliest works have been released that give a glimpse of Tolkien's first attempts to construct fantasy tales and worlds. Today, 100 years after it was written, another of Tolkien's works has been published.

Beren and Luthien tells the story of a mortal man and an immortal elf who are tasked by Luthien's father to steal a Silmaril gem from Melkor, the greatest of the evil beings. The story was reworked and told in The Silmarillion, Tolkien's anthology of short stories and tales about Middle-earth. The theme of love between mortal man and immortal elf woman also shows up in The Lord of the Rings with the romance between Aragorn and Arwen.

This version of Beren and Luthien was announced last year and has been put together by Tolkien's son, Christopher, who collected many iterations of the story to show its evolution. It is accompanied by illustrations by Alan Lee, an artist who previously worked on editions of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and other Tolkien books. You can see some of his illustrations above.

Tolkien originally wrote Beren and Luthien in 1917, after coming home from serving in the British Army in World War I. He was profoundly affected by the Battle of the Somme, specifically, and the loss of many of his close friends during the war. But Tolkien was also inspired by his interactions with Edith Mary Bratt, the woman he would eventually marry. "I never called Edith Luthien--but she was the source of the story that in time became the chief part of The Silmarillion," he wrote in a letter in 1972. "It was first conceived in a small woodland glade filled with hemlocks at Roos in Yorkshire (where I was for a brief time in command of an outpost of the Humber Garrison in 1917, and she was able to live with me for a while)."

J.R.R. and Edith's shared gravestone in Oxford, England, is inscribed with the names Beren and Luthien.

You can pick up the book from most booksellers; it currently costs $15.49 on Amazon.

A couple of years ago, Christopher Tolkien released another early story from his father's collected works. Titled The Story of Kullervo, it shows a different attempt by Tolkien to take many influences from Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon folklore and turn it into a fantasy story. This, too, eventually would be reworked and end up in The Silmarillion.

In other Tolkien news, multiple biopics are currently being made, according to The Hollywood Reporter. One of these, Tolkien & Lewis, will look at the author's friendship with Chronicles of Narnia writer C.S. Lewis and how he helped convert Lewis to Christianity. The other, called Tolkien, focuses on how he came to write the beloved fantasy series.

Nintendo Switch EShop Adds Its Second New Game Of The Week

By Anonymous on Jun 01, 2017 08:20 pm

Switch owners will have another game option on the eShop beginning today, Nintendo has announced. It marks the second new release of the week.

Today's addition is the latest title in the ACA Neo Geo line: Last Resort. Unlike so many of the other Neo Geo games available on Switch, this isn't a fighting game; it's instead a classic side-scrolling shoot-em-up from 1992. It can be had for $8/£6.29.

Last Resort follows this week's earlier release, Astro Duel Deluxe. This is also a retro-style shooter, albeit a much more colorful one that is essentially an enhanced version of a game released on PC last year. It offers local multiplayer support for 1-6 players and costs $15/£12.59.

Last week was a slightly busier one on the eShop, with a total of three new games: Disgaea 5 Complete, Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, and The King of Fighters '99.
