WWE's 7 Worst And Most Dangerous Technical Difficulties

By Kevin Wong on Jun 12, 2018 09:37 pm

Professional wrestling is a dangerous pursuit. It doesn't matter that it's choreographed; no matter how carefully wrestlers plan things out, no matter how polished the performers are, they're still slamming each other onto mats and jumping onto each other. If a wrestler doesn't raise his knees or arms, he could easily get his ribs cracked. And signature moves like the Styles Clash require both timing and communication, so the opponent knows when to tilt his head upwards instead of tucking it in.

Sometimes, even when performers do everything properly, they can be betrayed by faulty equipment or props. Maybe a table that's supposed to collapse stays in tact. Maybe a cage door that's supposed to hold in place gives way. The result of these malfunctions can be catastrophic; the wrestlers assume that everything will work the way it should, and when it doesn't, they haven't braced themselves for the result.

Here are 7 major WWE "technical difficulties" the company has navigated over the years. Most of them severely injured the wrestlers. One of them injured the fans. And one of them caused a wrestler's death. That led to pre-emptive measures, so a similar tragedy would never happen again.

If you liked this gallery, check out our gallery on WWE Real Backstage Fights and WWE One-Sided Matches. And be sure to check back on Gamespot Universe for coverage of Money in the Bank on the WWE Network, this Sunday, June 17.

Mick Foley Falls Through Hell in a Cell

Mick Foley agreed to fall off the side of Hell in a Cell when he faced The Undertaker at King of the Ring (1998). He had to tell a couple of fibs to get the stunt approved: Foley told McMahon that he had already been on the top of the cell (he hadn't), and he reassured McMahon he was totally comfortable up there (he wasn't). But the stunt actually went as well as it possibly could have; Foley hit the table, rolled, and dislocated his shoulder, but at least he was still breathing.

But the the second fall was unplanned; Undertaker chokeslammed Foley on top of the cell, and the roof gave way. On his way down, Foley hit his head on a steel chair and aspirated a tooth. He was out cold; Terry Funk and the referees improvised the entire segment afterwards to give Foley a chance to wake up and regain his focus.

To this day, Foley only remembers parts of the match due to his concussion. For example, he didn't remember getting slammed on thumbtacks twice; Undertaker had to point out the ones stuck in his arm.

The Undertaker Catches On Fire

The latter day "Phenom" Undertaker entrance is one of the most awe-inspiring spectacles in sports entertainment, with loads of smoke and massive balls of fire. But at Elimination Chamber 2010, it almost cost The Undertaker his livelihood.

Undertaker came out from the backstage curtain with his usual, slow, dramatic gait, when suddenly, a fireball erupted from the floor, right underneath where he was standing. Undertaker quickly moved out of the way and speedwalked to the ring, where WWE officials started dumping water on him. But the damage was already done. Undertaker suffered second and third degree burns. The trenchcoat he was wearing had melted and shriveled from the heat. Undertaker managed to work the entire match, but afterwards, he yelled at the pyro crew while still standing on the ramp--a rare break in character.

Backstage in the trainer's room, Undertaker told McMahon that he didn't want an apology or an excuse; he just wanted the pyro guy fired before he killed him. McMahon obliged and had the man escorted off the premises.

The Fireworks Burn Fans At Wrestlemania XXIV

Pyro is rarely used at WWE shows these days. However, Wrestlemania is still the exception, there the company pulls out all the stops. WWE loves to set off pyro from the top of the hosting stadium to create a truly immersive experience.

But the fireworks were a little too immersive at Wrestlemania XXIV in 2008. At the end of the show during the Undertaker's victory celebration, a cable that guided the fireworks snapped and went into the upper deck. Forty-five people were injured, and three required hospitalization following the incident. Fortunately, no one was killed.

Mark Henry Breaks a Ring Rope

Mark Henry was impressive looking but extremely green during his early years with the company. After being thrown on WWE television with little to no experience, Henry finally learned the basics of ring work and psychology in OVW, a WWE-affiliated developmental territory.

But it wasn't all sunshine and roses. One day during practice, Henry was "hitting the ropes" (running back and forth in the ring; it's a more difficult cardio routine than one might think) when one of the ring ropes broke. OVW co-owner Jim Cornette preferred using wrapped steel cables instead of actual ropes for this very reason; they lasted longer, and they didn't have to be replaced as often, especially on a practice ring. But WWE had sent OVW real ropes and a WWE regulation ring and expected them to use it.

Henry tore his quadriceps as a result of the error. Luckily, he was able to grab the top rope during his fall, which prevented him from landing on his head.

An "In Your House" Power Outage

Blackouts and power outages happen, and WWE tries its best to adjust, usually by focusing every available backup spotlight onto the ring. But back in 1996, a power outage ruined a PPV, and the company was forced to reschedule the show.

At In Your House: Beware of Dog (1996) in South Carolina. WWE got through one pre-show match and one undercard match before the electrical power went dead; the live PPV feed followed suit. WWE continued with the show; the feed would eventually turn back on before the main event between Shawn Michaels and Vader.

The encore presentation of the original show, titled Beware of Dog 2, took place two days later on PPV. WWE supplemented the pre-recorded footage from the prior night with additional, live footage of three more matches. Today, the PPV is available as a single event on the WWE Network, and it makes no mention of any problems.

Shane McMahon Doesn't Break Glass, Lands On Head

At King of the Ring (2001), Kurt Angle fought Shane McMahon in a street fight. One of the featured spots called for Angle to suplex Shane through a sheet of glass. Unfortunately, when Angle performed the move, the glass didn't break, and Shane landed directly on his head. According to Bruce Pritchard, the glass, while not sugar glass, was designed to break. However, it was unintentionally reinforced by being painted twice.

Backstage, Vince McMahon freaked out over his son's head injury; he nearly stopped the match when Angle and Shane tried the same suplex spot again. Fortunately this time, Shane broke through the glass, and the rest of the match continued as planned.

Owen Hart Dies From Massive Fall

This is still one of the most tragic events in wrestling history, especially because it occurred during a live pay-per-view--Over the Edge--in 1999. Owen Hart, then working a superhero gimmick as the Blue Blazer, was supposed to descend from the ceiling of the arena.

But disaster struck. During a video package segment--thankfully, the live camera was not showing the ring on television when the accident occurred--the cable detached itself from Hart's safety vest. Hart plummeted over 70 feet and hit the turnbuckle on the ring. He was given CPR, but was later declared dead at a local medical facility.

In the aftermath of the Owen Hart tragedy, WWE settled with Hart's family for $18 million. They also restricted the use of any high wire stunts. No matter the memorable visual, it wasn't worth the sort of public, dangerous risk that such a stunt presented.

E3 2018: All The PS4 Games From Sony's Press Conference

By Matt Espineli on Jun 12, 2018 09:16 am

When it comes to E3 press conferences, Sony often makes it a point to focus primarily on games, never spending too long talking in between reveals. While some years have varied due to the quality of the announcements, Sony has generally performed well with a bevy of unexpected reveals.

But this year's presentation offered a substantial change-of-pace. Instead of announcing a laundry list worth of games, Sony instead focused on four of its biggest upcoming games.

As to be expected, famed developer Hideo Kojima intrigued audiences with the latest trailer for Death Stranding. We finally got debut gameplay footage of Ghost of Tsushima, the open-work samurai action game developed by Sucker Punch Productions--the studio behind Infamous and Sly Cooper. In addition, the new trailer for Spider-Man made us all the more excited for the game's release this September. Lastly, we finally got a closer look at the The Last of Us: Part II's story and tense gameplay.

But there were plenty of other surprises too. Sony announced a sequel to Team Ninja's samurai-action game, Nioh. It even debuted the first trailer for the highly-anticipated Resident Evil 2 Remake, as well as footage for Control--the latest game by Remedy Entertainment.

Sony's E3 presentation was packed with exciting new details for its biggest games, as well as a variety of new ones. Be sure to click ahead to see everything that was shown. And if you'd like to catch up on everything that came from the briefing, check out our news roundup. In the meantime, which PS4 games are you most excited about? Let us know in the comments below.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Control

Control is the latest game by Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind Alan Wake and Quantum Break. The debut trailer showcased a strangely shifting world, with a protagonist who can fly and control objects using telekinesis.

E3 2018: All The Games From Ubisoft's Press Conference

By Matt Espineli on Jun 12, 2018 03:25 am

Ubisoft took to the E3 2018 stage to discuss many of the newest games it has lined up for release this year and next, as well as games well beyond that. We already went into the show knowing the company would show Assassin's Creed Odyssey and The Division 2; both received new gameplay, cinematic trailers, and in-depth discussions about their mechanics. However, the company also went into detail on a variety of other games.

A new trailer for Beyond Good and Evil 2 was shown, and it was even announced that actor Joseph Gordon Levitt would be helping create the game with his entertainment collaboration company, HitRecord. In addition, Ubisoft revealed more details about how Skull & Bones plays, as well as announce Trials Rising--the latest entry in the critically acclaimed physics-based motocross games.

But some of press conferences biggest surprises came in the form of unexpected crossovers. It was revealed that the upcoming toys-to-life game, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, will include Star Fox crossover content on the Nintendo Switch version of the game.

There were plenty of other exciting games to see at Ubisoft's E3 presentation, so be sure to check out the rest of this feature to see everything that was shown. And if you'd like to catch up on everything that came from the briefing, check out our news roundup. In the meantime, which games from the press conference are you most excited about? Feel free to discuss it in the comments below.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey

It might have been leaked by merchandise, but this iteration of Assassin's Creed has been confirmed to be at this year's show. Titled Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the game will be set in Ancient Greece and allows you to play either a male or female Spartan warrior protagonist. It'll also include dialogue choices and naval combat.

Beyond Good And Evil 2

We saw a teaser of Ubisoft's spunky new space adventure, Beyond Good & Evil 2, at E3 last year. What we know now is that it will be a prequel to the 2003 game and that players can choose a male or female character and explore different planets. However, it also appears the game will have characters from the original, like Jade and Paige.

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC (Expected) | Release Date: TBA

The Crew 2

Ubisoft's new racing game The Crew 2 expands on the open-world nature of its predecessor by offering a much more diverse array of vehicles. That means more than just additional car types--you can drive planes, motorcycles, and boats. Not only that, but you can seamlessly transitions from one vehicle type to the next.

Just Dance 2019

Just Dance returns this year sporting a new lineup of songs and dance routines. Like previous installments, players must mimic the on-screen dancer's choreography using either motion controllers or the game's associated mobile app.

The Division 2

Ubisoft Massive is at work on The Division 2, a follow-up to its open-world shooter, as it looks to build upon the foundation established in the previous game. This time around it's set in Washington D.C. and deals with the exploits of the Division attempting to reclaim the capital.

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One | Release Date: March 18

5 New Westworld Season 2 Theories From Episode 8, "Kiksuya"

By Kevin Wong on Jun 12, 2018 02:19 am

Westworld Season 2 spoilers ahead!

Westworld has a cold, unsentimental veneer which can feel oppressive--deliberately so. Thus, it was shocking and relieving to watch "Kiksuya," a sincere love story starring Akecheta, leader of the Ghost Nation.

For two seasons, the Natives on the edges of Westworld have been a mystery, more known for their intimidating appearance than any specific characterization. "Kiksuya" changes that. We learn that Akecheta and his people have been awake and aware of themselves for years; the other Westworld hosts are only now catching up to them.

Here are the latest theories about Westworld, based on the past eight episodes. It's gearing up to be one hell of a journey to the Valley Beyond.

1. QR Code Theory

The Maze has largely functioned as a metaphor since we first saw it in Season 1; "reaching the center" means that a host has gained its sentience. But what if it was more than just a narrative device?

Akecheta seemed unusually fixated upon it--so fixated that he drew it everywhere, and even showed his tribe how to draw it. Perhaps the Maze's pattern functions as a sort of QR code; when a host sees it, either as a carving or as a drawing, it unlocks sentience and awareness of past lives. Every major awakening in the show has been preceded by exposure to this symbol; Akecheta even drew a massive maze in front of Maeve's house years ago.

None of this explains why Akecheta is scalping his own people to tattoo the pattern on the inside of their heads, but there's still two episodes left in the season.

2. Jock Theory

This is a minor, but cool detail. Ford's dog is named Jock. One observant Redditor pointed out that former British prime minister Winston Churchill had a cat named Jock; Churchill wouldn't eat dinner without him. When Churchill's home was opened to the public, the family requested that a marmalade cat named Jock be in residence at all times. Currently, there's a Jock VI who lives at Chartwell.

This doesn't affect the larger plot. But Churchill clearly enjoyed the stability of routine, as did Ford, who recreated his childhood dog. It nicely parallels with the overarching themes of this series--about what it means to be alive and unique. It's also a nod to the multiple iterations that the human hosts have gone through since their first prototypical versions.

3. Kohana Theory

We learn that Akecheta has spent years searching for Kohana, his first love from his first storyline. When he finally finds her, she's in the cold storage of the Delos building, along with every other host that has been decommissioned. The show did an excellent job of framing this sequence with mythological connotations. Like Orpheus, Akecheta had to descend to a lower level--the "land of the dead"--to find Kohana.

But remember: Dolores emptied out the cold storage at the end of Season 1 to stage her assault on the gala. It is likely that Kohana is out and about somewhere in Westworld, probably with Dolores' small army, on her way to the Valley Beyond.

4. Bilingual Theory

Throughout the episode, Akecheta switches between talking in Lakota Sioux and English. The entire episode is framed as a conversation between Akecheta and Maeve's daughter. We learn at the end of the episode that Akecheta has been in contact with Maeve through the mesh network. Thus, one can conclude that when Akecheta spoke in Sioux, the words were meant for Maeve; when he spoke in English, those words were meant for her daughter.

In retrospect, this makes a lot of sense; the daughter wouldn't care about Akecheta's tragic backstory, but Maeve would; Akecheta and Maeve share that similar loss in common. Meanwhile, the lines in English are more broadly reassuring and general.

Like many of Westworld's best episodes, it appears that "Kiksuya" is one that would benefit from repeated viewings.

5. Wedding Ring Theory

And lastly, here's additional theory to support the idea that William is a host and probably died at the gala at the end of Season 1.

Eagle-eyed fans noticed that William was wearing a wedding ring on his left hand at the gala. But when he wakes up the following morning in Season 2, Episode 1, surrounded by the dead bodies of the other guests, he is no longer wearing it.

The practical explanation is that the costume/prop department forgot to put the ring on him. But in a show that relies so heavily on small details, this might be significant. Was it taken off his finger by another host or human? Or, is the ring still on the real, dead William's finger, and the current William is a host? If so, who switched the bodies?

Hopefully, the final two episodes will provide us with some satisfying answers.

WWE Money In The Bank 2018: Match Predictions

By Mat Elfring on Jun 12, 2018 01:34 am

To many people, the phrase "money in the bank" means you have literal money in a literal bank. Whether it's your bank account or someone else's all depends on context. However, WWE uses it as an idiom, a phrase from popular culture that's not really used anymore. To WWE, "money in the bank" is a briefcase with a title contract hanging above the ring which six to eight superstars all try to reach by climbing ladders. Confused? Good. We can now continue.

On Sunday, June 17, Rosemont, IL hosts the annual WWE PPV Money in the Bank. Much like last year's, this event will feature two Money in the Bank matches: one for the women and one for the men. What's different this year is that instead of the traditional six entrants into each match, there will be eight, and the show will feature both Raw and Smackdown superstars. Additionally, one of the members of The New Day will be competing but they have not said who it will be just yet. More than likely, we won't know until the actual event.

As of this writing, there are 10 matches on the card and a few interesting rumors to go along with the PPV, like which match will main event the evening. Additionally, check out our video feature about AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura. Everyone has plenty of opinions about what's going to happen at MITB, and that includes GameSpot. We have predictions for all of the matches announced thus far.

Also, make sure to keep checking back to GameSpot up until June 17, when we will have live coverage of MITB.

Daniel Bryan vs. Big Cass

The slow, grueling journey for Daniel Bryan making his way to The Miz continues its pitstop at Big Cass. This has been a fun little rivalry, but WWE fans are just waiting for Bryan to get past this, in hopes The Miz and Bryan's story can start sooner rather than later. Cass is a stepping stone for Bryan, and because of this, Bryan will get the win.

Our prediction: Daniel Bryan wins

Bobby Lashley vs. Sami Zayn

Coming off of one of the worst WWE segments of all time is Bobby Lashley vs. Sami Zayn. WWE split Zayn and Kevin Owens, which was going incredibly well, to place him in a feud with the returning Lashley. It's bland, derivative storytelling that not even Zayn can save, which is incredibly sad. This whole match feels like Sami is being served to Bobby on a silver platter.

Our prediction: Lashley wins

Seth Rollins (c) vs. Elias

(For the Intercontinental Championship)

Now that the IC Title is relevant again--thanks Miz--newly crowned champion Seth Rollins has to Walk With Elias. This will be his first big challenge, as Elias has been getting a big push and is a legitimate contender for the title. Hopefully, Seth's run will last a big longer, and I see this rivalry having legs until Summerslam. That being said, Elias will get the win, but he won't get the belt.

Our prediction: Elias wins by countout or DQ

Roman Reigns vs. Jinder Mahal

This is very much a "we don't know how to book these guys" battle. Chances are, if you're reading this, you also don't really care about the match. Neither of these stars elevates the other, and it's just a muscle-bound beatdown. I'm giving the win to Jinder because he's been hindered too long.

Our prediction: Jinder Mahal wins

The Bludgeon Brothers (c) vs. The Good Brothers

(For the Smackdown Tag Team Championship)

The Bludgeon Brothers have been an unstoppable force since winning the Smackdown tag championships, and they've beaten down the entire tag roster. So, their battle with The Good Brothers is exceptionally important for the division. If Harper and Rowan win, it'll make the entire tag team roster seem a bit helpless until a new team comes around (when the heck is Sanity coming over already?). Until things get changed on Smackdown, someone has to put up a good fight, and that's why I'm giving the win to the Good Brothers.

Our prediction: The Good Brothers win

Carmella (c) vs. Asuka

(For the Smackdown Women's Championship)

Smackdown's women's division is really heating up. The roster is stacked, and the championship match isn't focused around a newcomer who has yet to have a singles match yet (shots fired). Carmella has been a fantastic heel champion who I'm not ready to see dethroned. At the same time, Asuka is still riding her loss to Charlotte, which meant her undefeated streak was broken. Both of these wrestlers need the win, so it's one that can go either way. Additionally, I really want this rivalry to continue, but Carmella needs to be champ as her cockiness is delightful to watch. So, I'm giving the win to Asuka, but she won't get the belt, which is exactly what I'm predicting for Elias as well.

Our prediction: Asuka wins by DQ or countout

Nia Jax (c) vs. Ronda Rousey

(For the Raw Women's Championship)

The majority of WWE fans are not happy with the booking and lead-up to this title bout. First, Nia challenged Rousey, who hasn't had a singles match yet. Secondly, there are a slew of other performers that deserve this shot. While Rousey held her own at Wrestlemania, it's too early for her to be in the title picture. If she wins, Raw will have two absentee champions, as the chances of Rousey showing up every week and fighting are slim to none. Even though Jax says Rousey is ready, Jax needs to win.

Our prediction: Jax wins

AJ Styles (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (Last Man Standing Match)

(For the WWE Championship)

It's time for another act in the ongoing Styles/Nakamura saga, which has been wonderful the past few months, and easily one of the best storylines currently coming out of WWE. This will be a Last Man Standing match, so kicks to the groin won't DQ either contestant. This is a rivalry I see continuing after MITB, but in order for that to happen, Nakamura needs to win the championship.

Our prediction: Nakamura wins

Secondary prediction: Lots of low blows

Women's Money In The Bank Match

Hopefully, there's no James Ellsworth interference this year--although I secretly want him to show up. In this year's battle, Lana, Natalya, Alexa Bliss, Charlotte, Ember Moon, Becky Lynch, Naomi, and Sasha Banks will all be vying for the Money in the Bank contract, hanging above the ring. While I'm more than likely to be wrong with this pick, I will continue to hope for a Becky Lynch win. She needs to be in the championship picture again, and while an Ember Moon win would be amazing, the Raw women's division is going to have its eyes on Ronda Rousey for quite some time. It only makes sense to give the contract to a Smackdown superstar.

Our prediction: Lynch wins

Men's Money In The Bank Match

On the men's side of things, Samoa Joe, Kevin Owens, Bobby Roode, Braun Strowman, The Miz, Rusev, Finn Balor, and one of the members of the New Day will be involved in the MITB match. There is a lot of high-caliber talent in this match, and I could see it going multiple ways. And every part of me wants The Miz to win, to put him back in the main event status. However, there is a certain Universal Championship that needs to be removed from a certain part-time wrestler, and that's why I'm giving the win to Braun Strowman, in the hopes he decimates Brock Lesnar to become the new--fighting--champion.

Our prediction: Strowman wins
