Fortnite's Season 4 is coming to an end this week, and that means you better act fast if you want to earn the remaining Battle Pass rewards. The final seven Week 10 challenges were rolled out for players on all platforms last week, and you'll have until July 12 before they, along with all other Season 4 challenges, disappear.
There are a couple tricky tasks in this week's set of challenges, one of which simply asks players to search between movie titles. For that, you'll have to head northeast of Junk Junction to a cluster of buildings (including a movie studio). That's where you'll find the Battle Star, and you can see detailed directions for finding it in the video above. There's another challenge in the area that asks you to search seven chests in Junk Junction. You don't need to complete it in a single match, so you can repeatedly drop there at the start of a round and open chests until you reach seven. Another challenge has you search a chest, Ammo Box, and Supply Drop.
While the other tasks are fairly straightforward, you might have a tough time with the skydive through 20 floating rings challenge. The rings appear at three different elevations (denoted by different colors), so you'll potentially only be able to rack up three of them at a time. Fortunately, you can have your glider out to ensure you easily dive through the center of the rings (also shown in the video above), so all you'll need to do is play enough rounds and you'll be able to complete the challenge. For more details on how to beat this and the other challenges, check out our full guide to Week 10 challenges.
On July 12, Fortnite's new season, Season 5, will begin, bringing with it new challenges, rewards, and more. You can check out the full list of Week 10 challenges below, and if you still need to clear this season's tasks, check out our full Season 4 challenge guide.

Skydive through floating Rings (20) -- 5 Battle Stars
Hard: Search between movie titles -- 10 Battle Stars
Earlier this month it was reported that the fifth movie in the Indiana Jones franchise might miss its 2020 release slot due to a potential production delay. Now it looks as if the movie has moved back a year and will be released in July 2021.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Indiana Jones 5 will now hit theaters on July 9, 2021. The movie was originally set to begin production in the UK in April next year ahead of a Summer 2020 release. However, Solo: A Star Wars Story co-writer Jonathan Kasdan has joined the movie, to work on the script with Jurassic Park's David Koepp, pushing the shoot date back. Kasdan is the son of Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote the the first Indy movie, 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Indiana Jones 5 will be directed by Steven Spielberg, who helmed all the previous films, with Harrison Ford reprising his role as the iconic archaeologist. Last year, Koepp provided a few clues as to the direction of the next Indy movie. He said that the film will follow "some precious artifact that they're all looking for," and confirmed that Indy's son Mutt, played by Shia LaBeouf in 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, will not return.
In addition, Ford has spoken about why he was returning to the role of the iconic archeologist for the fifth time. "The opportunity to work with Steven again on this character which has brought pleasure to so many," he said. "Not to mention me. It's great fun to play this character. It's great fun to work with Steven, I'm looking forward to it."
Although Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was considered a disappointment by many fans, it still grossed more than $786 million worldwide. Altogether, the series has brought in nearly $2 billion at the global box office across all four releases.
Amazon is gearing up for Prime Day, a major sale event for Prime members. Prime Day doesn't officially begin until July 16, but a number of deals are already available right now. If you're a gamer, the best deal by far is the truckload of PC games Twitch (owned by Amazon) is giving away for free between now and July 18. All told, 21 free games will be available for Prime members in July.
The availability windows vary depending on the game, but today you can download 10 games for free. Make sure to grab them quickly, because one game goes away every day this week. Yesterday, for instance, was the last day to download Q.U.B.E. 2. But even if you've missed out on some of the free games, many more lie ahead.
The latest free game is Deponia Doomsday, a humorous point-and-click adventure game that involves puzzles and time travel. It's free until July 16. The other free games include Battle Chef Brigade, which is only available through July 10. It mixes side-scrolling brawling with match-three puzzling.
Also free is Gonner, a challenging procedurally-generated platformer that will be available until June 12. Then there's Hue, a side-scrolling puzzle platformer that has you change the color of the background to navigate past obstacles. It's available for free until July 15. The deal lasting the longest is a free SNK bundle that includes Metal Slug 3, The Last Blade 2, and Twinkle Star Sprites; it's available through August 2.
To get those and more free games, you'll first have to link your Twitch and Amazon Prime accounts. Next, head to Twitch.tv and click the crown icon next to the search bar. That opens a drop-down menu where you'll find your free games, along with any other freebies you haven't collected yet. Just note you'll need the Twitch desktop app to access the games.
Even more free games are coming in the days ahead, including Tacoma, Broken Age, and Brutal Legend. You can find the full schedule and descriptions of each game here.
By Anonymous on Jul 10, 2018 11:27 pm Skyrim is available on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and so much more--and according to Todd Howard, people just keep playing it. Nintendo also made new comments about cross-play.
The Predator is the latest movie in the long-running sci-fi action series and is set to hit theaters in September. The trailers for the movie made it clear that alien hunters of the title have been given something of an upgrade in terms of their distinctive armor, and the latest image from the movie has given us a good look at the new Predator.
The image comes via Empire, and it reveals the the lean, mean armor that the creature will be wearing in the film. Presumably this will come in handy when it has to face the Super Predator, the giant hybrid revealed in the most recent trailer. Check it image out below:
The Predator is directed by Shane Black, who previously helmed Iron Man 3 and the crime comedy The Nice Guys, as well as writing the original Lethal Weapon. It stars Boyd Holbrook (Narcos, Logan), Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse), Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Keegan-Michael Key (Keanu, Key & Peele), Sterling K. Brown (The People v. OJ Simpson), and Jacob Tremblay (Room).
In an interview with Empire, Black explained that it was necessary to make the Predator a scary adversary once more. "The challenge became to make it frightening," he said. "'Cause upon that hinged everything--whether you bought our heroes going up against him and felt a real threat for them. We had to invent a scenario in which the Predators were mysterious and scary again."
Black also provided a few details about the reshoots that recently took place, and explained that the main change was the time of day. "The first time we shot the third act it was daytime," he said. "It's all this spooky stuff but then its bright sunlight. It just didn't work. So I said 'Ummm, can we do this again at night?'"
Fortnite Season 5 is just around the corner, and Epic has been steadily hinting at a historical or time travel theme this time around. Those clues are slowly getting more explicit, and the latest teaser image appears to be at it again--perhaps even showing an upcoming piece of equipment in the process.
The teaser image dropped on Twitter shows a stylized axe similar to Viking and Scandinavian hatchets. We can probably expect to see the axe make an appearance in Fortnite proper. The same image appeared in today's in-game updates menu, with the phrase "Worlds Collide."
For days, Fortnite has been home to strange time-bending shenanigans. After a missile launch appeared to open rifts in the map, strange historical objects have been phasing into existence. The effect goes both ways, too, as some items that have disappeared from the Fortnite map have popped up in unexpected places in the real world. Or sometimes, llamas. All of that has led to speculation of a time-travel theme for Season 5, which this latest tease seems to imply as well.
Fortnite Season 5 is scheduled to begin on Thursday, July 12, at 1 AM PDT / 4 AM EDT / 9 AM BST / 6 PM AET, so you have precious little time left to finish the Season 4 challenges. You can also take that time to finish your fan film for a screening and a bunch of V-Bucks.

Blizzard has announced the next expansion for Hearthstone, coming next month. The Boomsday Project introduces a host of new mechanics and card types, and you can get a first look at a few of the cards that have been revealed so far to get a taste for this expansion's flavor.
The Boomsday Project revolves all around Dr. Boom and his cadre of mad scientist friends cooking up strange inventions and spells. The first and foremost is the introduction of class-based Legendary spells, which promise powerful effects. These appear to be paired with the class Legendary minions, each said to be a mad scientist Dr. Boom recruited to tinker with science and sorcery.
Another spell type, Projects, offer symmetrical effects for both players. New Omega cards give big bonus effects if you wait to play them until you have 10 Mana crystals. And the new Magnetic keyword lets you merge two Mech minions together, combining their attack, health, and any special effects.
The first five card reveals provide a look at each of these mechanics, along with the Shaman Legendary minion Electra Stormsurge. Check them out above. The Boomsday Project launches August 7. A pre-order bundle offers 50 packs for $50 with a special card back, and a separate $80 bundle bumps that up to 80 packs and throws in the Mecha-Jaraxxus alternate Warlock hero.
Hearthstone's new expansion is slated for release next month, and it marks the return of one of the most legendary original characters to come out of Blizzard's collectible card game. The Boomsday Project launches on August 7, and it places the wild Dr. Boom in a starring role. It will feature 135 new cards, new card types and keywords, and a distinct focus on Mechs.
The biggest new addition comes in the form of Legendary spells, which promise much bigger impacts than ordinary spells. Hearthstone began with only Legendary minions but has expanded the Legendary feature to Quests, Heroes, and Weapons, so Spells are the last remaining card type. The announcement teased that each spell is the product of some mad scientist recruited by Dr. Boom, so those are likely to make appearances as class Legendary minions that synergize with their signature spells.
A new keyword is being introduced as well. Mechs will come with the "Magnetic" keyword, letting you merge them together to combine their attack, health, and abilities. This appears similar to the Hunter "Deathstalker" hero power with Beasts.
Finally, two new card types are being introduced without special keywords. "Projects" are spells that benefit both players, meant to challenge you to build your deck strategically so you can take better advantage of the benefits. Omega cards get a big bonus if you play it once you have 10 Mana crystals, encouraging you to save some otherwise early minions for the late game.
A single-player component will follow two weeks after the launch of the expansion. On August 21, The Puzzle Lab will open. Unlike the boss challenge or dungeon-crawling single-player portions from previous expansions, this round will focus on different puzzle types: Lethal puzzles, which challenge you to find the winning play, and Survival puzzles, which require you to stay alive against overwhelming odds.
Logging in during the launch event will net you a free random class Legendary and three Boomsday Project card packs. You can also purchase a 50-pack bundle for $50 that includes a free golden class Legendary and a Mecha-Jaraxxus card back. A separate 80-pack bundle for $80 will also include the Mecha-Jaraxxus Warlock Hero (above). The announcement notes that each can only be purchased once per account, which would seem to indicate that you could buy both if you want 130 packs for a better price than average.
Let's get extreme, but not in like a late-90s/early-00s type of way with dirtbikes doing backflips and drinking Mountain Dew while wearing Jnco jeans. WWE is taking things to the extreme in its aptly titled Extreme Rules PPV. It is coming to the WWE Network on Sunday, July 15, and the show will take place at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, PA.
This will be the eighth major WWE event of the year, including the bizarre Greatest Royal Rumble PPV back in April. Last year, WWE produced 16 PPVs, but only four of them were dual-branded--meaning both superstars from Raw and Smackdown appeared on them. Now, in 2018--post-Wrestlemania 34--all WWE PPVs are dual-branded, which will cut down on the amount of events the company holds, which was every two weeks at times. WWE will be holding special events, like the previously mentioned Greatest Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia and October's Super Show-Down in Australia. In total, WWE has 14 PPVs planned for 2018.
Extreme Rules
This PPV may give WWE fans some insight as to what's happening August 19 at Summerslam, which will once again take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. A few of the matches that happen here may even happen again next month. One of the newest rivalries that has legs to carry into next month is Braun Strowman vs. Kevin Owens. While their steel cage match is the first, big, sanctioned match for their rivalry, it won't be their last, regardless of the outcome.
In addition to the Monster Among Men taking on Owens in a cage, the rivalry between former Intercontinental Champion Seth Rollins and and current title holder Dolph Ziggler continues at Extreme Rules and has a good chance to carry into Summerslam as well. The two wrestlers have put on stellar matches in their previous meetings with each other, and a 30-minute iron man match is the perfect way to showcase both of their talents and build on the stories WWE has been setting up the past couple of months.
Start Time
12 AM BST (July 16)
7 PM ET
6 PM CT
5 PM MT
4 PM PT
Per usual, a Kickoff Show will air on the WWE Network--and most likely YouTube--one hour prior. As of this writing, there are ten matches on the card for the evening, one of which will be on the Kickoff, and we should still see another match added. Everyone who's getting ready for Extreme Rules has their favorites to win each match, and GameSpot is no different. We've gone through the upcoming card and decided with great certainty who will win each of these matches. There may be a few title changes for the evening, but one thing is for sure: it's going to be a Happy Rusev Day, no matter who wins.
Make sure to come back to GameSpot on Sunday, July 17 for live coverage of WWE's Extreme Rules as well as some followup pieces as well. If you're looking for more wrestling, check out these WWE movie cameos you might have missed.
Braun Strowman vs. Kevin Owens (Steel Cage Match)
For months, I was waiting for Strowman to enter the main event picture and take the title off of Brock Lesnar. Additionally, after Chris Jericho left WWE, I was waiting for a storyline that was worthy of Kevin Owens' talent. The WWE Creative Gods have finally answered my prayers. After being trapped inside a port-a-potty and flipped over--which is Strowman's specialty--Owens found himself on the Extreme Rules card with the Monster Among Men in a steel cage match. This is perfect for this storyline, and it's easily one of the best-built matches on the card. No matter the outcome, the audience will be the winner. However, this is a rivalry I want to see continued into Summerslam, especially since Lesnar isn't going away any time soon, so an Owens win makes sense here to have him continuously taunt Strowman, who will demand a rematch.
Our prediction: Owens wins
Roman Reigns vs. Bobby Lashley
In the continuing saga of "Who Does Vince Think The Audience Will Buy As Brock's Next Opponent?" Bobby Lashley has stepped up to the plate. However, he has to get through Roman "I'm Always The #1 Contender Regardless Of My Win/Loss Record" Reigns. As much as I don't care for Lashley, I'd much rather see him in a main event picture over Reigns, if those are our only choices right now. Do we really need to see Lesnar/Reigns again? At least with Lashley, we'll get to see more than just six Superman Punches for 15 minutes. And Lashley has the build, strength, and durability to last against "The Beast."
Our prediction: Lashley wins
Finn Bálor vs. "Constable" Baron Corbin
Maybe it's just me--I hope not--but Baron Corbin dropping the "Lone Wolf" gimmick and becoming the "Constable" for Stephanie McMahon has reinvigorated his career. This should be a fun match and maybe even one of the surprises of the evening. While I want Balor back in the main event picture, this rivalry has legs, and because of that, I'm giving the win to Corbin in hopes it continues into Summerslam.
Our prediction: Corbin wins
Deleters of Worlds (c) vs. The B-Team
(For the Raw Tag Championship)
Raw's tag team division is a bit of a mess. It feels like it's in this weird holding pattern, and there's just not a lot of hype around it. Something needs to change, and while a win for The B-Team may not be the kick in the butt the division needs, it's a push in the right direction for now.
Our prediction: The B-Team wins
The Bludgeon Brothers (c) vs. Team Hell No
(For the Smackdown Tag Championship)
Smackdown's tag division isn't much better than Raw's. The Bludgeon Brothers have run through the entire division on the Tuesday night show, and it's made all attempts at someone else winning the title futile in the process. Luckily, Team Hell No is back and provided some hope for Smackdown's tag team scene. While I'm hoping this is all another stepping-stone to get Bryan to take on Miz at Summerslam, I think Bryan and Kane have a chance to win the titles.
Our prediction: Team Hell No wins
Carmella (c) vs. Asuka
(For the Smackdown Women's Championship)
Hopefully, I'm not the only person who is excited James Ellsworth is back, even though Carmella doesn't need him around anymore. Obviously, Ellsworth will be involved, even though Carmella and Asuka could easily have a great match on their own. In a perfect world, this would be a great match to showcase Carmella and have her look like a champion who could stand on her own. However, I have a feeling Ellsworth is going to ruin it for her, and Asuka will somehow get the win.
Our prediction: Asuka wins after Ellsworth interference goes wrong
Dolph Ziggler (c) vs. Seth Rollins (30-Minute Iron Man match)
(For the Intercontinental Championship)
Remember when Dolph Ziggler won the United States Championship and abandoned it? Well, now he's the Intercontinental Champion, and I'm surprised he didn't walk away from this one as well. Ziggler and Seth Rollins have been putting on some stellar matches, so an Iron Man bout feels like the perfect fit. This is going to be a close one, but I'm giving Ziggler the win.
Our prediction: Dolph Ziggler wins
Alexa Bliss (c) vs. Nia Jax (Extreme Rules match)
(For the Raw Women's Championship)
Nia Jax will get her rematch for the Raw Women's Championship after Alexa Bliss cashed in her Money in the Bank contract last month. Jax, as champion, didn't work exceptionally well the first time, primarily because she was switched from face to heel in order to take on Ronda Rousey, which made no sense. Until her character can get back on track, Bliss should and will remain champion.
Our prediction: Alexa Bliss wins
Jeff Hardy (c) vs Shinsuke Nakamura
(For the United States Championship)
After spending the past couple months kicking AJ Styles in the groin, Shinsuke Nakamura has moved on to challenge Jeff Hardy for his United States Championship. This has to be a turning point for Nakamura. His character is working so well as a heel, and he's got to win a title sooner or later. A long-term rivalry between these two would be great, but it needs to start with a Nakamura win.
Our prediction: Shinsuke Nakamura wins
AJ Styles (c) vs. Rusev
(For the WWE Championship)
Happy Rusev Day! Anyone else feel like this match came out of left field? Sure, Rusev has a huge following behind him as of late, and at some point, he should be back in the title picture, but this feels a little too quick. AJ Styles has been a phenomenal champion for Smackdown, and it's just not time for the title to go to someone else yet.
From free in-game bonuses to physical items and limited special editions, there are plenty of reasons to pre-order a game. And with all the hyped-up games to look forward to in 2018 and 2019, it can be tough to stop yourself from locking down your copy long before release. There's nothing wrong with that, but if you're going to place a pre-order, you'll want to come prepared.
Game releases nowadays can be complicated things, with numerous editions and pre-order bonuses, all offering different sets of goodies to anyone who buys. Retailers sometimes even have exclusive bonuses, so where you place your pre-order can be just as important as which edition you pick. It's a heap of information, all spread out across the internet. If only there were somewhere you could go to get all the information you need in one place.
Turns out there is, and you've found it. We've whipped up guides for all the biggest games you can pre-order now, most of which will be coming out in 2018 or 2019. These guides have all the information about pre-order bonuses you stand to receive, what comes in each special edition of the game, and how much everything costs across different retailers. With all of the info in one place, you can make an educated buying decision and pre-order the right edition for you, at the best price available.
A few cautionary notes before you whip out that credit card. When it comes to pre-orders, some things are subject to change. Games get delayed all the time, and sometimes advertised features don't make it into the final game. It's also wise to look at the fine print before pre-ordering a game. Some retailers require you to put down a bit of money up front, while others require full payment at the time of pre-order and don't offer refunds. Others, like Amazon, let you lock in your pre-order without putting any money down, and let you cancel at any time.
With that out of the way, let's dive into pre-order guides for some of the biggest games releasing soon.
Some links to supporting retailers are automatically made into affiliate links, and GameSpot may receive a small share of those sales.

Game director Hideo Kojima might be done with the Metal Gear series, but that doesn't mean he's done with video games. After parting ways with Konami in 2015, Kojima opened a new studio with the help of Sony. The company's first project is the PS4 exclusive Death Stranding, a mysterious game that somehow becomes even more cryptic with the release of each new trailer.
Pre-order information is scarce at the moment, but you can lock in your pre-order at a handful of retailers right now.

From the opening title's splash screen, Sonic Mania's presentation is intoxicating. Its colorful, retro 2D graphics and vibrant '90s-inspired pop soundtrack is enough to make any Sega Genesis fan squeal in excitement. In this jointly developed game, Sega and members of the Sonic fan-hack community have created a loving homage to the blue hedgehog's glory days. But Sonic's latest outing isn't only concerned with reminding you of his past; though it is decadent in this regard. Sonic Mania exceeds expectations of what a new game in the franchise can look and play like, managing to simultaneously be a charming celebration of the past and a natural progression of the series' classic 2D formula.
Taking place shortly after the events of Sonic & Knuckles, the game's story sees Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles getting involved once again in a battle against Dr. Eggman--this time over a mysterious emerald artifact. However, the conniving scientist isn't alone; enlisting the help of the Hard-Boiled Heavies--a group of customized Eggrobos. But the story takes a backseat as the time honored premise endures: defeat Eggman and his baddies, and collect all the Chaos Emeralds.
Sonic Mania makes a strong first impression thanks to amazing visuals and music. Its presentation replicates the charming aesthetic of Sonic's earliest games with thorough detail. While the pixelated sprites of Sonic and friends are reminiscent of their Sega Genesis' counterparts, they take on a new life with a higher degree of detail and animation quality. The new effects add an extra layer of personality to the iconic characters that's a joy to see in motion.
On the other end of the spectrum, the game sports an assortment of new music tracks and remixes of greatest hits. They channel the New Jack Swing dance music stylings that heavily influenced Sonic's soundtracks in the '90s, remaining just as catchy and well-orchestrated here. Both visuals and music work together in Sonic Mania to build up an aesthetic that's evocative of earlier games, but in a pleasing style that feels contemporary all on its own.
On top of Sonic Mania's fantastic presentation, the game also controls like a classic-style Sonic game. You have the option to play as Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles; you can even work cooperatively with another player as Sonic and Tails a la Sonic 2. From the get go, the movement physics and overall feel of each character are distinct yet familiar, staying faithful to the originals. The gang's unique abilities remain intact, albeit with one exception: Sonic has a new Drop Dash, which allows him to quickly roll forward after a jump. It's a small addition, but it provides a handy new way to pick up speed or avoid incoming danger.
Level design is at the series' best here, sporting 12 zones that are each meticulously designed with cleverly placed obstacles and varied pathways that keep you guessing. It can feel exhilarating to pass through a multitude of pathways, especially at top speed. No route ahead ever feels incorrect as you sprint through loops or hit springs launching you into different directions, and there are rarely any instances where the action halts without reason. And thanks to the visibility granted by the widescreen aspect ratio and the smooth framerate, your awareness and sense of control running through a zone feels better than Sonic's classic outings ever did.
It also helps that levels are designed around the abilities of each character. While Sonic can blaze a trail through a zone, Knuckles and Tails can find other paths beyond his reach thanks to their respective climbing and flying abilities, which often lead to new ways of experiencing the same stage. It's enjoyable to engage with the subtle ways each character interacts with the world and the conveniences they offer. And you're rewarded for taking the time to do so, as on some occasions, characters even get completely new levels to explore that are designed specifically around their abilities.
Sonic Mania closely follows its forebears, utilizing the exhilarating sense of speed that the 2D games charted their success upon. However, it never incorporates elements from the past purely for the sake of nostalgia; rather, it expands upon the familiar with new ideas of its own. This is most apparent when you play remixed versions of older zones from the first five games. Sonic Mania's version of Sonic 2's Chemical Plant zone introduces a mechanic where you constantly jump on jelly to bounce upwards to new parts of the level. Changes like this liven up the design of well-known levels, offering fresh and gratifying new experiences.
New zones, on top of offering a suite of charming visuals and catchy melodies, deliver plenty of inventive concepts that diversify and build upon the series' fast-paced level design. Whether it's by encouraging you to freeze yourself into an ice block to smash through walls, or challenging you to figure out a maze-like sequence of gates to reach the end of a zone, the ideas the game explores give it a strong sense of identity compared to the originals.
In the same style as Sonic 3, every level culminates in a boss fight--ranging from relatively simple, to demanding set-piece battles where you go head-to-head with Eggman and his minions. However, there are some fights that pay homage not only to past games, but early spin-offs from the Sonic's history, such as Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and Sonic Fighters. There's also a fair number of more challenging battles that require more advanced tactics to beat. One has you dodging projectiles as you use a series of poles to propel yourself towards a spider robot. Boss fights offer a great balance of difficulty, steadily challenging and entertaining you in numerous ways as you progress.
The past and present seamlessly intermingle in Sonic Mania, answering your nostalgic yearning, while satisfying your thirst for fresh concepts.
The more you play Sonic Mania, the more it rewards you with reasons to keep playing. Additional modes like Competition and Time Attack offer other ways to experience its levels. Aside from acquiring all the Chaos Emeralds to obtain the true ending, one of the most compelling reasons to replay zones come from Secrets--Sonic Mania's term for unlocks that give you access to new characters and abilities. For example, you can play through the entire campaign using Sonic's Insta-Shield ability from Sonic 3. You can even unlock "& Knuckles" mode, where a second player can play cooperatively with you as Knuckles instead of Tails.
For years the Sonic series has chased the legacy of its early games, constantly delivering experiences that either came close or failed to recapture the spirit that made them classics. Whether it was by getting wrapped up in story or putting too much emphasis on speed instead of level design, the newer games lost track of what made the originals great. Sonic Mania methodically uses its sentimental appeal to great effect, but in the process, it heals the wounds inflicted by its most disappointing predecessors and surpasses the series' best with its smart and interpretive design. An excellent 2D platformer, Sonic Mania goes beyond expectations, managing to be not only a proper evolution of the series' iconic formula, but the best Sonic game ever made.
Editor's note: Alongside Sonic Mania's physical release is a $5 update (included with the physical) that introduces new features that add even more diversity to the game's high-speed thrills. The most noteworthy addition are classic--albeit lesser-known--characters Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel, who each sport their own unique abilities. Mighty's ground pound makes for a satisfying way to pick up speed and dispatch enemies, and his resistance to spike traps is a nice bonus if you're more a player with an unhealthy desire to accelerate. On the other hand, Ray's momentum-based glide ability takes some getting used to, requiring you to alternate directions on the D-pad after jumping to maintain flight. The thrill of stringing together his high-flying antics with a well-timed jump onto an enemy or platform is well worth the effort to learn. Both Mighty and Ray offer subtle, yet substantial additions to the well-established formula.
Returning players are likely to spend the most time in Encore mode, a new campaign that takes you through remixed versions of the game's stages. But there's a twist: swappable characters replace extra lives. You start as Sonic and slowly accumulate the game's playable cast via item boxes and bonus challenges scattered across the stage. You can control and switch between two characters at a time, but when one dies, that character is lost and switched out with whoever you have left on reserve. Encore Mode is a welcome change-of-pace that makes Sonic Mania's already fantastic levels more tense and exciting. And the ability to play all five characters in a single mode makes the experience all the more varied and joyous.
Beyond these additions and small tweaks, including balancing fixes and the ability to use secret options in any of your save files, Sonic Mania is the same exuberant celebration of Sonic's past. While it was already a fantastic package on the outset, this new update makes it even better than before. If you missed Sonic Mania the first time around, now is the perfect time to catch up.

The battle royale of battle royales continues, as another take on the popular genre has touched down. The Culling 2 is the sequel to 2016's title, which boasts itself as the first built-from-scratch battle royale game. It's available on Steam, PS4, and Xbox One now for $20.
The sequel promises 20 square kilometers of map space and a wide variety of firearms to join the first game's melee combat. It sets the match size at 50 players, unlike many other 100-player battle royales, for a more intimate murder experience. The official Twitter account noted that Xbox users may be experiencing some lobby issues, which they're working to resolve.
At a lower price, The Culling 2 might tempt budget-conscious buyers, but it has plenty of competition. PUBG is still wildly popular on Steam, and more popular games are jumping onto the trend. The upcoming Battlefield 5 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 have both announced their own battle royale modes, and even non-shooters like Sea of Thieves are reportedly looking into the mode. Plus, of course, Fortnite continues to be extremely popular at the low price of free, so any competitors will have to carve out their own niche to distinguish themselves from the competition.
