Comic-Con 2018: James Gunn Teases SDCC Movie Reveal

By Anonymous on Jul 18, 2018 12:23 am

Marvel Studios is sitting out San Diego Comic-Con 2018, but that isn't stopping one of its most prominent directors from taking the stage in Hall H. James Gunn, the director behind the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films, is heading to Comic-Con with a secret film project.

The director first started teasing the Comic-Con reveal with an Instagram post. In it, Gunn writes, "I will see many of you at [San Diego Comic-Con] one week from today (Friday, 7/20) with something dark, sweet, and special." He followed that up with a mysterious tweet, which you can see below.

The image is presumably the logo for whatever project he's going to announce, but what's most important it the location and time he lists. Friday in Hall H at 6:15 PM PT, the Sony Pictures panel will begin. It was already announced that that particular panel will have new information about the upcoming Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movies.

While both are technically Marvel projects, neither is expected to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So don't expect Gunn to be associated with either of those. However, we have an idea about what his tweet could be referencing.

Though he has been very busy with writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn does have another project in the works. It was announced in December that the director would be stepping in to produce a horror movie script written by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn--his brother and cousin, respectively.

A plot for the horror film has not been revealed, but it's quietly built a rather impressive cast. Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games), David Denman (Logan Lucky), Meredith Hagner (Ingrid Goes West), and Matt Jones (Breaking Bad) were all previously announced as being cast in the project, which is being directed by David Yarovesky, who has collaborated multiple times with Gunn.

Whether this is the project Gunn plans to unveil at Comic-Con or not, it's a movie horror fans should keep an eye on. After all, he's no stranger to the genre. In addition to writing the screenplay of the 2004 Dawn of the Dead reboot and 2016's The Belko Experiment, Gunn also wrote and directed the 2006 cult classic Slither.

For more about what to expect from this year's San Diego Comic-Con, make sure to check out our list of must-see panels, as well as the exclusives you'll want to buy from both Funko and Mondo.

Overwatch's New Hero, Wrecking Ball, Gets Release Date And New Skins

By Anonymous on Jul 18, 2018 12:19 am

Overwatch's 28th Hero is a hamster named Hammond, whose in-game code name is Wrecking Ball. Blizzard announced he'll be rolling into Overwatch on July 24. Players who own Overwatch on PC can already get an early look at Hammond's unique abilities on Overwatch's Public Test Realm.

Wrecking Ball has been given a number of new skins on the Public Test Realm, each giving Hammond a diverse range of looks, from the mutant-looking Biohazard skin to the punk-looking Mayhem skin. We've compiled all of Wrecking Ball's character and weapon skins in the gallery below.

Wrecking Ball can seamlessly transform his mech into a giant ball and quickly roll around the battlefield. He also has Quad Cannons, a couple of automatic firearms, and can fire out a grappling hook that lets him swing around the arena to achieve enough speed for knocking back and damaging his enemies. Adaptive Shield gives Wrecking Ball added protection--the effectiveness of which is determined by the number of nearby enemies. Piledriver slams Wrecking Ball into the ground to deal massive amounts of damage, and Wrecking Ball's Ultimate, Minefield, litters the ground with proximity sensitive explosives.

If you have Overwatch on PC, you can try out Wrecking Ball and dress him up in any of these skins right now. You can access the Public Test Realm through the Battle.net app's Region/Account drop-down menu. Hammond will be available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC on July 24.

Pokemon Go: Last Chance To Catch Legendary Pokemon Regice

By Anonymous on Jul 18, 2018 12:18 am

The Legendary Pokemon Regice has been a fixture of Raid Battles since it debuted in Pokemon Go last month, but it won't be available for much longer. The Legendary Titan is only scheduled to appear until this Thursday, July 19, making this your last opportunity to add one to your collection before it leaves the game.

As with other Legendary Pokemon, players will first need to team up with other Trainers in-person at Gyms to battle Regice, and only after the Legendary has been defeated will they earn a chance to capture it. Just as its name implies, Regice is an Ice-type, which makes it especially vulnerable to Fire, Rock, Steel, and Fighting Pokemon, such as Blaziken, Machamp, and Tyranitar.

No Caption Provided

Regice originally debuted in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire as one-third of the Legendary Titan trio, along with Registeel and Regirock. The remaining two Legendaries are also slated to debut in Pokemon Go later this summer, although Niantic has yet to announce the exact date when either will begin appearing in Raid Battles.

In the meantime, Pokemon Go players will soon have another chance to catch a previous Legendary Pokemon. As a reward for achieving the Global Challenge goal during the Pokemon Go Fest event this past weekend, Niantic will host a special Zapdos Day on July 21. The Legendary bird will be available around the globe for a three-hour window of time that day, and players will even have a chance to encounter a Shiny variant.

Beyond Zapdos Day, players still have a chance to capture a special summer-style Pikachu, which is available for a limited time to celebrate Pokemon Go's second anniversary. Niantic has also revealed the first details for the next Pokemon Go Community Day. Unlike previous events, it will take place on two days, August 11 and 12, and feature Eevee.

Amazon Prime Day 2018: Best 4K UHD Movie Deals (US Only)

By Anonymous on Jul 18, 2018 12:02 am

Amazon Prime Day is ongoing, and there is a staggering number of deals available. Not all of them are necessarily good deals, of course, but those in the market for movies do have some solid options. Specifically, those hunting for 4K UHD deals are in luck, as a nice selection of films can be had for $15 or less in the US.

Before diving into the specifics, remember that you'll need a Prime membership to take advantage of Prime Day deals. If you aren't currently a member and haven't been one in the recent past, you can likely sign up for a free trial, getting you access to Prime perks for the next 30 days. You can cancel before it auto-renews and still get to take home some cheap TVs, cooking equipment, games, or whatever else you want.

We've already rounded up a selection of some of the best movies and TV shows, as well as anime, but 4K deals in particular are desirable for those with the required hardware. If you're anything like me, you want to re-buy movies, but doing so at the crazy MSRPs of 4Ks is off-putting. Amazon Prime Day should make doing that (or picking up something new you want to get your hands on) much easier.

Amazon has an array of 4K movies for $15, with some going for even less. The selection involves a fair number of duds, but there are some great movies in there, including The Fifth Element, Blade Runner, Dunkirk, John Wick, The Matrix, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and many others. Terminator 2, while there have been some complaints about the 4K release, can be had for only $13. You can see the full list on Amazon or check out some of our highlights below. You'll find a variety of Harry Potter movies in there, but if you want all eight, you can actually get a 4K collection for just $80, which works out to $10 per movie.

For more coverage of Prime Day, which wraps up at 11:59 PM PT on Tuesday, July 17 (2:59 AM ET), check out the links below.

New Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies Trailer Shows Off Undead Tigers And Story Details

By Anonymous on Jul 17, 2018 11:50 pm

Activision has shared a new trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. This one focuses entirely on the game's Zombies mode, introducing players to its four playable characters and setting the stage for two of the three Zombies episodes that will be available when the game launches this fall.

Black Ops 4's Zombies mode follows the story of Scarlett Rhodes, a young woman searching for her father who mysteriously disappeared 15 years ago. She crosses paths with three "loyal outcasts," who team up with Scarlett out of gratitude to her father to help her find him. Their search ultimately becomes entangled with an ancient relic that appears to have the power to create zombies and transport the group back in time.

The trailer, which you can watch above, offers a glimpse at two Zombies chapters: Voyage of Despair and IX. The former is set aboard the Titanic, which has been overrun by some type of dark magic that transforms the crew members and other passengers into zombies. The latter episode takes the group back in time to a Roman battle arena, where they must fight zombie tigers and other horrific monsters. Both Voyage of Despair and IX will be available to play at launch, along with a third Zombies episode titled Blood of the Dead.

Activision first unveiled the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Zombies mode during the game's big reveal event back in May. In addition to sharing details about the aforementioned episodes, the publisher revealed that Zombies mode will feature seasonal events called Callings, as well as daily, monthly, and yearly events. Players will be able to tackle the mode either with friends or AI bots.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 12. Unlike previous installments, it won't feature a traditional single-player campaign, but rather a series of solo missions that focus on each of its Specialist characters. It will also have a battle royale-style mode called Blackout.

Ahead of its release, Activision will host a series of beta tests for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The Private Multiplayer Beta takes place in August. A separate beta for the aforementioned Blackout mode will also be held in September. Additional details on that test will be announced later.

Great Amazon Prime Day Deal On Oculus Rift And Touch Controllers

By Anonymous on Jul 17, 2018 11:40 pm

PC gamers interested in dipping their toes (and heads) into virtual reality can do so at a low price today, thanks to Amazon Prime Day 2018. Amazon has the Oculus Rift VR headset and Touch controllers for $350. That's $50 off its usual price, making it a good deal for curious gamers.

The bundle comes with the Oculus Rift headset, two Touch controllers, two Oculus sensors, cables to connect it all together, and seven free VR apps: Lucky's Tale, Medium, Toybox, Quill, Dead and Buried, Dragon Front, and Robo Recall.

To use the Rift, you'll need a powerful enough PC running Windows 10. You can find the minimum and recommended PC specs at the Rift website. There's also a compatibility tool you can use to make sure your rig is up to speed.

No Caption Provided

The Rift cost $600 when it debuted in 2016--and that was before the Touch controllers came out. From GameSpot's original Oculus Rift review: "Yes, you will look silly to anyone who watches you use it, and you will potentially feel uneasy after an intense VR session, but these issues can't take away from the fact that Rift delivers on its promise to enable more immersive and personal gaming experiences than we've ever seen before."

The Touch controllers launched later that year for $200, making the whole bundle an expensive proposition. Now just two years later, you can get it all for less than half the original price. That's not a bad deal.

But you'll have to hurry. Prime Day ends tonight at 12 AM PT / 3 AM ET, and when it's over the Rift bundle goes back up to $400.

Xbox One's Free Games With Gold For July 2018 Out Now

By Anonymous on Jul 17, 2018 10:36 pm

It's the middle of July, and that means it's time for Microsoft's Games With Gold offerings to cycle over into the next round. This week, Death Squared is being added to the Xbox One offerings, and Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is swapping out for Splinter Cell: Conviction on Xbox 360. Assault Android Cactus for XBO remains free until the end of the month and Death Squared will go until mid-August.

However, Sam Fisher appears to be suffering some technical setbacks. Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) tweeted that engineers are investigating reports that Splinter Cell isn't showing as free for some users. If it doesn't appear properly on the store when you check in, the problem will likely be fixed soon enough. [Update: Sure enough, the issues have been resolved, according to Microsoft, and you shouldn't have any further problems downloading Conviction.]

As always, any new Xbox 360 games added to the Games with Gold service are backwards compatible, so you can play them on your Xbox One. They join a large and growing list of backwards compatible games, since Microsoft has made it adding new games a priority.

Those are the inclusions with Gold, but separately, Microsoft also offers its Game Pass subscription service for $10 per month. That has a wide selection of its own, including all new first-party games alongside their regular releases.

July 2018 Games With Gold

Xbox One

  • Assault Android Cactus (July 1-31)
  • Death Squared (July 16-August 15)

Xbox 360 (playable on Xbox One)

  • Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown (July 1-15)
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction (July 16-31)

It's Time To Put A Bullet In The Walking Dead's Head

By Anonymous on Jul 17, 2018 10:34 pm

How long can a zombie hobble along before one of the world's few remaining survivors finally puts it out of its undead misery? Since debuting in 2010, The Walking Dead has been a force to be reckoned with on TV. It's broken TV ratings records, become a pop culture phenomenon, made stars of practically its entire cast, and brought an entire genre back from the dead. All good things must come to an end, though, and one of those things is The Walking Dead.

As the AMC series prepares to storm San Diego Comic-Con to give the first taste of Season 9--which won't premiere until October--there are some massive questions looming over The Walking Dead. In particular, fans are wondering about the status of star Andrew Lincoln. Warning: The Following contains The Walking Dead Season 8 spoilers.

It was reported in May that Lincoln, one of the few remaining original cast members, was set to exit the show during Season 9, though AMC has yet to comment. And he's not the only one looking for a way out. Lauren Cohan, who joined in Season 2 as Maggie, is starring on ABC's Whiskey Cavalier this fall, which should keep her plenty busy and not nearly as available for The Walking Dead.

No Caption Provided

Rick (Lincoln) and Maggie leaving are just the latest in a long list of reasons I have been ready to quit The Walking Dead over the years. In the past, though, the show has always been able to find a way to reel me back in. Since the arrival of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), though, it's hard to find a light at the end of the tunnel.

At The Walking Dead's lowest points, fans of the comics would always point to the eventual arrival of Negan, the biggest villain of the franchise, as when everything would turn around. After all, Negan is the most devious and disturbed baddie The Walking Dead could ever think up on the page--seeing him in live action was going to be amazing. Even Glenn's (Steven Yeun) fake death in Season 6 could be forgiven because Negan's arrival was at hand.

Then he arrived, though. The whispers of Negan and peaks at his Saviors were a terrifying new thrill for the show. The man, himself? Not so much. While Jeffrey Dean Morgan is certainly a good choice to play Negan, the moment he stepped out of his trailer with trusty Lucille at his side and said, "It's gonna be pee pee pants city here real soon," something felt wrong.

That is a line pulled directly from the comic books, but seeing a live person say it in an actual life-and-death situation made the moment feel like a cartoon. It's not exactly the introduction fans needed as Season 6 came to a close and the show failed to reveal his first victim.

No Caption Provided

Then Season 7 arrived and he took out two beloved characters--Glenn and Abraham (Michael Cudlitz)--in the most graphic manner possible. Even for The Walking Dead, watching Negan repeatedly smash his bat into an already crushed head was too much. The show had crossed a line it hadn't until that point and took on a lot of criticism over it.

From there, the next two seasons featured the group constantly at odds with Negan, as new allies and foes were introduced. Those episodes saw Morgan chewing scenery as the bat-wielding maniac at an alarming rate. Long scenes were devoted to Negan monologues, as life during a zombie apocalypse somehow became more hopeless.

Now, after Season 8 and the supposed defeat of the leader of the Saviors, what's left? While The Walking Dead's ratings are still impressive, they've been sliding for some time. The Season 8 finale was the least-watched since Season 1--before the show found its massive audience. The more telling number, though, is that the Season 8 finale brought in 30% fewer viewers than Season 7's, one year before it.

There's a reason Lincoln and Cohan are looking for their exit strategy from The Walking Dead. The show's best years are behind it.

No Caption Provided

In theory, the show could go on forever. New characters are continually introduced and integrated into the group that could power the story going forward. However, fans just don't identify as closely with them as those introduced during the glory days. While viewers like Jesus (Tom Payne), he doesn't hold a candle to Michonne or Eugene (Josh McDermitt).

So what is AMC to do? It could continue milking The Walking Dead until it runs dry. After all, the network doesn't have a more popular property at this point--sorry, Fear the Walking Dead. When shows stay past their welcome, though, fan sentiment can turn swiftly. Nobody talks about the glory days of Season 25 of The Simpsons. Likewise, the later iterations of 24, Prison Break, Weeds, and even How I Met Your Mother are often looked back on with a frown. For many shows that overstay their welcome, the fanbase simply moves on.

With its ratings on the downswing, that seems to be what's happening with The Walking Dead. Now that Lincoln and Cohan--two big pieces of that show's heart--seem ready to move on, perhaps this year's San Diego Comic-Con is a great place to announce a final season. After all, doesn't this world and these characters deserve a proper farewell?

No Caption Provided

That's not going to happen, though. After all, while the ratings are tumbling, they're still impressive. The Season 8 finale brought in nearly 8 million viewers--compared to over 11 million in Season 7--which is still very respectable for cable TV. The Walking Dead may not be breaking records anymore, but there is a base of die-hards that will not give up on the show, no matter what. And with the reports that AMC is negotiating with Norman Reedus (Daryl) to keep him on as a major part of the series, the network clearly isn't planning on pulling the plug anytime soon.

Perhaps that's a good thing. Maybe The Walking Dead will find its way and become thrilling once again. With longtime writer Angela Kang taking over as showrunner in Season 9, that's certainly a possibility and hopefully, it is how this plays out. Because as it stands now, The Walking Dead remains a zombie, lumbering along and waiting for someone to finally put a bullet in its head.

Best Amazon Prime Day 2018 Gaming Deals For PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PC, And 3DS

By Anonymous on Jul 17, 2018 10:21 pm

We've entered the second day of Amazon Prime Day for 2018, and that means there are numerous deals for you to peruse. In the US, the sale started out by taking down Amazon's website for many users, though even with those issues persisting for some, you can still successfully head directly to a product page to make a purchase. Of course, to do so, you'll need an Amazon Prime membership--and you can sign up for a free trial if you don't already have one. There's still a fair amount of time left to take advantage of the sales on offer, and there may still be some to come that we don't yet know about.

Prime Day runs until midnight on the night of Tuesday, July 17 (3 AM ET). Some deals will be far more limited than that for one reason or another--some will only run for a few hours, while others will sell out, as we saw with a nice Nintendo Switch bundle--although that has since come back in stock, and it remains one of the best gaming deals from the sale. All of this makes it difficult to secure the best deals, but we're rounding up all of the top offers we've found for you below. We'll update this throughout the rest of Tuesday as more deals become available.

If you're looking for something more specific, you can also hit the links at the bottom of this story for our coverage of more specifics platforms and categories. We've got roundups of the best deals on PS4, Xbox One, and Switch that we'll also continue to update and cover more than what you see below, including a variety of Lightning Deals--but don't expect a ton for Switch unless things change dramatically from the first few hours of Prime Day.

No matter what ends up going on sale, Prime members can still get a bunch of free PC games through Twitch Prime, which is among the perks you receive with an Amazon Prime membership. Best of all, those games are yours to keep--just make sure to claim them while they're available. If you're looking for other things, our sister site CNET also has roundups for things like the best streaming video/TV deals, while Chowhound has the best kitchenware and ZDNet has news on Huawei phone and wearable discounts.

Hardware, Consoles, And Accessories

Deals on specific consoles have been few and far between at this point, but for those still in the market for a 3DS, the nostalgia-inducing SNES edition of the New 3DS XL is available with a free copy of Super Mario Kart for $150. There's also a nice Xbox One bundle with a free copy of Rare Replay for $230, along with various accessories for PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and 3DS/2DS. And a Switch bundle that had sold out is now back in stock--you get a Nintendo Switch, 64 GB microSDXC card, and a $20 Eshop credit for the system's standard price of $300.

Games

Games from a variety of genres are on sale, and--as noted above--you can snag some freebies through Twitch Prime throughout July. In terms of what you can buy, one of last year's best games, Persona 5, is down to $30 on PS4, while another acclaimed Japanese game, Yakuza 6, is $35. See the full list of highlights below.
