Star Wars Episode 8, otherwise known at The Last Jedi, isn't due out until December this year. But at the recently held Star Wars Celebration event in Orlando, director Rian Johnson and the film's cast revealed the very first teaser trailer for the sure to be upcoming box office juggernaut. Sure, it's only a teaser, so there aren't major plot details revealed. But this teaser does confirm a lot of fan theories, as well as give all of us a tantalising glimpse at what's in store for Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, BB-8, Kylo Ren, and even the reclusive Luke Skywalker. It looks like Skywalker will indeed take on the role of mentor to Rey, training her on that mysterious planet that we saw in the very last shot of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But what other secrets and plot details does this teaser trailer hold? Let's dive in to find out.
Hello Rey! The first shot of this teaser shows a rock, before Rey's hand slams down on it and the camera moves up to reveal her stressed face. This is the costume that we last saw Rey in, when she arrived on the planet Ahch-To to confront the reclusive Luke Skywalker at the end of The Force Awakens. Is this the start of Rey's formal Jedi training? Luke's voiceover during the next section seems to lend credence to this fact, as he says: "Breathe. Just breathe. Now, reach out. What do you see?"
Waves are crashing on Ahch-To as Rey stands pensively looking out to the horizon. This island Luke has stationed himself on looks pretty desolate, which begs the question: where does he get all his supplies from? Is there more to this island than just being a bare rock with no trees?
Yep, Rey is totally using the Force here. Is she sitting cross-legged in the background, though? Is this within the same scene as the previous shot, and therefore could possibly be part of Luke's training?
Here, apparently, is the start of Rey's answer to Luke when he asks: "What do you see?" This is General Leia Organa, standing in front of some sort of star map on the bridge of a ship. and if you listen very, very closely to the audio at this point, you can faintly hear the line: "Help me, Obi-Wan." Is that merely a callback to the original trilogy? Or does it have some deeper meaning?
This looks to be Kylo Ren's destroyed helmet. The panels behind it hint that this location being some sort of First Order facility, but what exactly has happened here? Is this a flashback to the previous film and Starkiller Base? And there's another audio hint playing softly here, with what sounds like Obi-Wan Kenobi saying "Seduced by the dark side". Again, what's the link?
Is this some sort of bookshelf? Our guess would be that this is within Luke's home on Ahch-To. But what exactly are these tomes? And as if there weren't enough audio hints in this trailer, it sounds like Yoda's voice can also be faintly heard here saying "Train, you will." Or, here's another bit of speculation: could this bookshelf actually be on Dagobah instead?
This book is clearly very important to Jedi lore. But what is it? Could this be the famed Journal of the Whills, an ancient book that allegedly recounts the major events in galactic history?
If you had any question as to whether The Last Jedi would see Luke train Rey, then this shot should serve as your answer. This looks like Luke training Rey as she wields a lightsaber.
This could be a shot of a brand new planet to the Star Wars universe. According to previous interviews with The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, there will be a planet called Crait in the upcoming film, a mineral planet on the outskirts of the galaxy that will play a key role in the struggle between the First Order and the Resistance. The red dust kicked up by these ships (sadly, they're not podracers) seem to indicate mineral deposits, and with the preceeding shot to this show First Order AT-ATs in the distance, it seems like a fight is definitely on the cards here between the two forces.
Here's our first look at ex-Stormtrooper Finn, and it looks like he's still in pretty bad shape after the events of The Force Awakens.
Here's Poe Dameron and BB-8, running furiously through what seems to be a ship or base that's under some sort of attack.
In the next shot, it looks like our heroes are indeed in the dock of a ship in space. Things aren't looking good, however, with that explosion seemingly taking out Poe's custom paint job X-Wing.
And here's the Falcon, seemingly engaged again in combat within a planet's atmosphere. Who's flying this, we wonder? If Rey is training, could someone else be at the helm?
Is Rey running to a fight, or is this part of her training with Luke?
Fresh from committing patricide (woops, spoilers), here's Kylo Ren looking all pensive and rocking that facial scar he received from Rey in The Force Awakens.
This shot is likely a flashback scene to when the Knights of Ren destroyed Luke's Jedi training facility, which was the catalyst for him to disappear from the face of the galaxy in the first place.
Is that Captain Phasma leading those troopers? Looks like she survived that trash compactor she was supposedly placed in at the end of The Force Awakens.
These look like the new Nebulon-B escort frigates, but we're not quite sure where this battle is taking place. What is that planet in the background?
Did Luke really just say "It's time for the Jedi to end?" What happened to him during his long isolation? What type of man is he now?
