Persona 5 Negotiation Guide

By Matt Espineli on Apr 14, 2017 08:30 pm

In Persona 5, there are over a hundred Personas to collect, each with their own distinct skills and affinities. But you can't harness their strength if you lack the skills to convince them to join your cause. Effectively negotiating with a shadow requires finesse, as you need a thorough understanding of their personality and temperament to win their favor. That's why we've compiled tips and tricks to help you take your shadow communication skills to the next level.

How To Trigger A Negotiation

In order to negotiate, you need to trigger a Hold Up. This only occurs when all shadows on the field have been knocked down. To initiate a Hold Up, use skills that exploit a shadow's weakness. It's also possible to weaken an enemy with a critical hit. Whether it's from fire, ice, physical, electrical, or even gun attacks, each shadow has particular vulnerabilities. For example, an Incubus is weak to gunfire. A shadow's weakness is not revealed to you until you discover it yourself, so make sure to experiment with your skills whenever you meet one you've never fought before.

No Caption Provided

A successful blow to a shadow's weakness temporarily renders it defenseless, which gives your party ample time to surround it. This also grants your current character an extra turn, ideally to weaken another shadow. Once you've knocked down all the opponents in battle, a Hold Up begins and you're given two choices for what to do: Talk or All-Out Attack. Highlight the shadow you wish to negotiate with and press X to start a negotiation. You're then given three options: "lend me your power," "give me some money," and "I want an item." Ask it to offer you its power.

Be mindful that you cannot convince a shadow that is higher in level than you to join your team. Doing so causes it to flee. However, it's still possible to ask it for money or items.

How To Properly Negotiate

No Caption Provided

When you talk to a shadow, it asks you two questions. For each, you're given three responses to choose from. Depending on how you answer its questions, the shadow will either like you, feel indifferent toward you, or heavily dislike you. Its interest in you is determined by how well your replies accommodate its personality type.

There are a total of four types: Gloomy, Irritable, Timid, and Upbeat. You can decipher what personality a shadow has by analyzing it mid-battle or observing its type on the top left portion of the screen during a Hold Up. To get each shadow personality type to like you, simply answer its questions in the following ways:

Personality TypeLikesDislikes
GloomyVagueSerious, Funny
IrritableSeriousVague, Kind
TimidKindVague, Funny
UpbeatFunnySerious, Vague

Oftentimes finding the right dialogue response can be easy to decipher, but there are times when the correct choice might seem ambiguous or obtuse. When in doubt, refer to our table and go with your gut.

It's important to note that if you've already acquired a specific Persona and are holding it up, you can skip the negotiation entirely and get it for free (provided you don't already have a copy in your party), which is a great way to obtain a Persona if you don't want to summon one from your compendium.

Negotiation Buffs

While it's possible to survive by paying attention to the likes and dislikes of each shadow personality type, there are actually ways to enhance your negotiation skills further. Below you can find two unique ways to better your chances at a negotiation.

Improving Your Relationship With Ann

No Caption Provided

If you increase your relationship with Ann to Rank 2, you obtain an ability called Girl's Talk, which gives you a second chance when you fail a negotiation. To get this ability, increase your Knowledge to two and offer to take her out on a date. In addition, when you reach Rank 5, you get Crocodile Tears, which gives Ann the chance to lower a shadow's demands, resulting in a second chance to bribe.

While many of your party members obtain similar or equivalent abilities as you increase your rank with them, you get Ann's much sooner. Make sure to rank up your bond with other party members to increase the number of people in your crew that can help you negotiate.

Befriending Toranosuke Yoshida

Another way to enhance your negotiation skills is to take on the Sun Social Link, which unlocks the ability to obtain Persona without the need for negotiation, as well as options that allow you to obtain rare items, more money, and recruit Persona higher in level than you.

No Caption Provided

To do so, talk to Toranosuke Yoshida, the politician outside the Shibuya train station. But in order to start the Social Link, you need to get a part-time job at the nearby beef bowl restaurant. Once you've worked there twice, Yoshida will speak to you at the end of your shift. You then build your relationship with him by holding a sign advertising his political campaign.

The new trailer shows off many of the new transportation networks you can build in the Mass Transit DLC. Your citizens will be able to get around via ferry, monorail, cable car, and even blimp, all of which connect together and with your existing rail lines.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Episode 1 Review

By Mat Elfring on Apr 14, 2017 12:31 pm

After 18 years off the air, the wise-cracking, movie-riffing phenomenon known as Mystery Science Theater 3000 is back. The series returns to for a 12th season, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign. but this time around, the show is streaming on Netflix. While there have been many classic series with a cult following brought back for the modern era, MST3K is one--and the only--revamp that embraces its roots and provides new content that is as good, if not better, than the original.

The new series follows Jonah Heston (Jonah Ray), a Gizmonic Institute employee who falls into a devious trap set by Kinga Forrester (Felicia Day) and TV's Son of TV's Frank (Patton Oswalt). Heston ends up aboard the Satellite of Love, where Forrester and Frank send him cheesy movies--the worst they can find. Heston must watch the movies, while Forrester monitors his mind. All of this exposition is mentioned in the opening theme song. Heston isn't alone, though. Joining him are his robotic friends: Cambot, Gypsy, Tom Servo, and Crow. They watch the movies with Heston, all while making fun of them. Because of the early access to this episode, specific information about it, screencaps, and what movie the crew watches are not allowed to be released.

No Caption Provided

The opening moments of the episode, prior to the theme song, introduce Heston and how he became trapped on the Satellite of Love. Much like the original series, the show relies on models and cheap-looking special effects for all the moments that take place in space. In an age of computer generated effects, seeing models--and even the strings attached to them--is a breath of fresh air. It sets the tone for the show, mainly for those who have never heard of it. MST3K doesn't take itself seriously, and it's providing light-hearted fun.

In addition to Ray, Day, and Oswalt being included in the new season, Tom Servo, Crow, and Gypsy get new voices. Hampton Yount (@midnight) plays Crow, Baron Vaughn (Comedy Bang Bang) is Servo, and Rebecca Hanson voices Gypsy. It's jarring to hear these new voices coming out of these well-known puppets. The voices simply don't match what the viewers are accustomed to in the past. It can be bit hard to determine who is who. However, this group begins to meld together exceptionally well by the end of episode one, and it's quite apparent that Ray will be a great lead for the new season.

Aside from the voices, the personalities are a big part of these robots, and it takes about halfway through the episode for that to kick in. It feels like there is a lot of trial and error in perfecting each voice for the characters. A lot of what feels problematic here could easily be placed on the viewer, as they may be expecting a carbon-copy of the characters from the original show. It's apparent MST3K is trying something different, but after the first episode, that's not clear just yet.

One thing the new season of MST3K did exceptionally well is in the writing department. The riffs are smart, natural, and most of the time, incredibly funny. There is a little bit of a lean towards nerd culture with the references, but at no time does that alienate anyone watching the show. It feels very inclusive in that respect. One of the new additions to the show is a couple of musical numbers, which may not be everyone's cup of tea. Regardless, the in-show music is clever and well-written and should play exceptionally well to a younger viewing audience, creating a whole new generation of fans.

No Caption Provided

A few other familiar elements from the original series return, like the "Invention Exchange." Aspects like this one help create an easy transition between seasons and casts. In addition, much like the original, there are breaks from the movie, so the viewers can get to know the cast a bit better. It helps the pacing of the show because as many longtime fans will know, some of the movies the crew watches are really tough to get through.

The new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 lives up to the high expectations. While there may be a few small bumps in the road, the opening offering is one of the better overall episodes of the entire series. The Netflix series continues the tradition of watching bad movies and making fun of them without messing with the original format of the show. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" seems to be the philosophy for the new show, and fans will be extremely pleased with its execution.

The new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 hits Netflix on Friday, April 14.

Disclosure: The author of this review backed the "Bring Back Mystery Science Theater 3000" campaign on Kickstarter, which gave early access to the first episode for some backers.

Nintendo Switch Server Maintenance Coming Up, Here's When And For How Long

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 14, 2017 12:22 pm

Some online services for Nintendo Switch, as well as Wii U and 3DS, will be unavailable at two different periods next week, Nintendo has announced.

As detailed on Nintendo's website (via GoNintendo), the first round of maintenance is scheduled to take place on Monday, April 17, starting at 5 PM PT. The two-hour maintenance period will impact network services such as online play and rankings. Then on April 19 from 6:45 PM PT to 8 PM PT, online services for Switch, Wii U, and 3DS may become available as part of scheduled maintenance.

In other Nintendo news, the company announced that the Switch sold 906,000 units in the US during March alone, while Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has surpassed 1 million copies sold.

Additionally, Nintendo held its latest Nintendo Direct briefing this week--here's a roundup of all the big announcements.

Nintendo Switch US Sales Hit 906k In March, New Zelda Up To 1.3M Sold

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 14, 2017 07:31 am

The Nintendo Switch sold more than 906,000 units in the US during March, its launch month, Nintendo announced today. In a news release, Nintendo reiterated that the Switch, a hybrid system that works at home and on the go, is the fastest-selling console in Nintendo's history. It's also "one of the fastest-selling video game systems of all time" for any company, Nintendo said.

The company also pointed out that March is a "nontraditional month" for a new console release. New consoles, from Nintendo and others, are historically released in the immediate lead-up to the holidays.

Nintendo also said today that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has sold 1.3 million units; more 925,000 were sold on Switch and almost 460,000 on Wii U. These numbers combine physical and digital sales, and only represent figures for the US.

"That means that Nintendo sold more of this game [Breath of the Wild] for Nintendo Switch than it sold Nintendo Switch systems, for an attach rate of more than 100 percent," Nintendo said. "This may be attributed to people who purchased both a limited edition of the game to collect and a second version to play."

Breath of the Wild is the fastest-selling Nintendo launch title ever and the fastest-selling Zelda title across its entire 30-year history.

Finally, Nintendo frankly acknowledged that "shipments have not yet been able to keep up with such high demand." Nintendo said more systems are "continually being shipped."

Nintendo will reveal a "full accounting of worldwide Nintendo Switch" sales during the company's next earnings briefing, which is scheduled for April 27.

Nintendo Switch Tops PS4, Xbox One In US March Sales - Report

By Eddie Makuch on Apr 14, 2017 04:40 am

The Nintendo Switch was the top-selling console in the US during its launch month of March, according to data from the NPD Group reported on by Game Revolution.

No specific unit sales were provided, however. The Nintendo Switch launched on March 3 and quickly became the fastest-selling Nintendo platform in history.

Microsoft and Sony did not share March sales figures for the Xbox One and PS4 respectively, though Game Revolution reported that the PS4 outsold the Xbox One. The PS4 has now apparently topped the Xbox One in US sales for five straight months.

Sony didn't have a statement available at press time, while Microsoft said in its own statement that the quarter ended March 2017 (January-March) was a big one for the company, with "record Xbox Live engagement with 1.1 billion multiplayer hours logged globally." This is up 14 percent year-over-year.

The statement goes on to tease some of Microsoft's 2017 plans, which include Project Scorpio.

"Looking ahead, we are excited to share more about our plans for Xbox One, including launching the world's most powerful console--Project Scorpio--alongside an amazing lineup of new Xbox One games. We are thrilled with the incredible response we have received to date for Project Scorpio, and look forward to sharing more about the Xbox One family of devices in the coming months," Xbox marketing boss Mike Nichols said.

A week from today, the NPD Group will announce the top-selling games for March 2017. We'll report back with more details as they become available.

Xbox's Project Scorpio Will Be Unveiled At E3 2017, Phil Spencer Confirms

By Michael Higham on Apr 14, 2017 03:43 am

Today, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer announced on the official Xbox website that Microsoft will indeed reveal Project Scorpio in its entirety at E3 this year. Spencer had this to say:

"With Project Scorpio, we created a console with the goal of being the ultimate place for developers to realize their visions and the best place to play any Xbox game...We're excited to unveil Project Scorpio and the amazing game experiences it powers at E3 this June."

Among the details missing so far are the console's final design, official name, and price tag. We could also see more games running on the hardware at the expo. For now, we only know of the hardware specifications which were revealed earlier this month.

Scorpio will be equipped with an eight-core CPU clocked at 2.3 GHz, a GPU capable of six teraflops, and 12 GB of GDDR5 system memory with 326 GB/s bandwidth. It's expected to be 43% faster than the PlayStation 4 Pro, and 4.5 times faster than the Xbox One.

Project Scorpio was seen running the Forzatech engine, which is used in Forza Motorsport 6 and Forza Horizon 3. The demo was running native 4K resolution at 60 frames per second (FPS) while only using 70% of its GPU power. When cranking up the graphics settings, it maintained 60 FPS while using 88% of the GPU.

Pokemon Go Easter Event: Eggstravaganza Goes Live

By Patrick Faller on Apr 14, 2017 02:24 am

Pokemon Go is promising to "put a spring in your step" with its latest event: an Easter "Eggstravaganza" that runs for the next week. The biggest boost comes in the form of a souped-up egg hunt. 2 km eggs, the most common eggs in the game, will now hatch a greater variety of Pokemon. Hatching each one of those eggs will land you extra candy, too.

Throughout the Eggstravaganza, all players will get double the XP. You'll level even faster with Lucky Eggs, which will give you four times the XP during the event and are half-off in the in-game shop.

Pokemon Go's Easter event goes from today until April 20. Meanwhile, game creator Niantic is teasing new features and a new cooperative mode sometime in the future, as the game maintains its huge popularity (65 million-plus monthly active users).

Windows 7 And 8.1 Will Not Update With AMD Ryzen And Intel 7th Gen CPUs

By Michael Higham on Apr 14, 2017 01:55 am

If your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 machine is equipped with Intel or AMD's latest processors, you won't be able to get the latest Windows updates. Microsoft simply says this is because the new processors were "designed for the latest version of Windows" and that compatibility on the older Windows platforms is difficult. Last month, this was anticipated to kick in at an undetermined time. But today, Ars Technica reports that the compatibility issue is starting to take effect this month. CPUs that are affected by this Windows update block include the following:

  • Intel 7th Generation "Kaby Lake"
  • Intel 6th Generation "Skylake" (at a later date)
  • AMD Ryzen
  • AMD "Bristol Ridge"
  • Qualcomm "8996" (Snapdragon)

Users that encounter the issue will see this prompt when attempting to update their OS:

No Caption Provided

This is critical for users in this particular situation, since security fixes for the platforms are tied to Windows updates. Features specific to Ryzen, Skylake, and Kaby Lake--such as power management--are said to be difficult to support on the older platforms. Windows 7 also requires hotfixes for NVMe and USB 3.0 support, both of which are common in modern systems.

Back in January 2016, Microsoft announced that both the Windows 7 and 8.1 platforms will cease to support Intel 6th generation Skylake CPUs in July 2017. However, Skylake-based systems from 16 different vendors will continue to receive support on the older operating systems.

According to Steam's official hardware and software survey, about 35 percent of its users are still on some version of the Windows 7 operating system. About eight percent are using a version of Windows 8.1.

Kingsman 2: Check Out The New Cast In First Images

By Dan Auty on Apr 14, 2017 01:41 am

The first images from Kingsman: The Golden Circle have been revealed. The sequel to the 2014 spy action comedy is due in theaters in September, and these first images shows returning stars Taron Egerton and Mark Strong, with new cast members Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, and Jeff Bridges. Check them out in the gallery below, via Entertainment Weekly:

These pictures follow the official poster, which was released last month.

Egerton spoke to EW about the new film, and explained that it was much more of an ensemble movie than the original. "For the first one, I felt like if I wasn't really good then it wouldn't work," he said. "This time, the story still unfolds through my eyes but this is still a true ensemble piece. And also, I've had a bit more experience. I'm not asking the crew what every piece of camera equipment does."

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is directed by Matthew Vaughn. The cast also includes Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, and Elton John, who the director states is playing a "Vaughn-ized" version of himself.

The first movie, also directed by Vaughn, was one of 2014's biggest surprise hits, making $414 million worldwide.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle hits theaters on September 29, 2017.

Nintendo Discontinues NES Classic Edition

By Patrick Faller on Apr 14, 2017 12:59 am

After just six months on the market, Nintendo says it is discontinuing the NES Classic Edition in North America. Nintendo did not provide a specific reason for why the console is being discontinued, but the plug-and-play system has been plagued with supply issues; months after its launch it was still selling out almost as quickly as new shipments were released.

"Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year," Nintendo said in a statement.

"We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product."

Nintendo has only said, so far, that the NES Classic Edition is being discontinued in North America. When asked whether the discontinuation would be applied globally, a representative from Nintendo said, "Please see the statements made by Nintendo in other territories."

The NES Classic Edition launched last November, coming preloaded with 30 classic NES games. When asked if these classic games will be made available on the Switch or another system, Nintendo only said "We have nothing to announce at this time."
