Scuf Gaming is known for making third-party controllers geared towards professional gamers, and typically tweaking features such as the grips, thumbsticks, and triggers, in addition to extra paddles for remapping controls.

Today, Scuf released two new controllers: the Impact ($140 USD) and the Infinity 4PS Pro ($130). Both come in several colorways and have interchangeable features. Additional accessories are sold separately, but we'll be looking at what comes in the box for each controller.

Keep in mind that the Scuf Impact is compatible with both the PS4 and PC.

Controller and Accessories

We received the gold-black-silver colorway for the Scuf Impact controller. Additionally, it comes with extended L2 and R2 triggers, concave thumbsticks, thumbstick removal key, magnetic remapping key, and screw tool.

The controller itself is noticeably larger than the standard DualShock 4 (DS4) and has a closer resemblance to the Xbox One controller. The two handles have more of an outward angle than the DS4.

Bottom of the Controller

Bottom of the Controller

You'll find the audio jack in the same spot, under the controller. The placement on the Impact may make it difficult to connect audio devices that have thick casing or a 90 degree notch at the input.

Triggers

Triggers

The standard R2 and L2 triggers have a deep groove, similar to those on the DS4.

Extended Triggers

Extended Triggers

The R2 and L2 triggers pop out when pulled from underneath, letting you swap in the extended triggers if you need more surface area to pull down on them.

Adjusting the Trigger Stops

Adjusting the Trigger Stops

The tool that comes with the controller lets you adjust the integrated trigger stops. Here, you can adjust the point at which R2 and L2 bottom out, and that can improve the quickness of releasing the triggers.

Underneath R2 and L2 is the hair trigger mechanism, activated with the screw tool. It allows you to shorten the actuation point, which makes for quicker button input.

Paddles, Grips, and Remapping

Paddles, Grips, and Remapping

The Scuf Impact features four programmable paddles on the back. These can be programmed through the electromagnetic remapping (EMR) key that comes with the controller. This is done by attaching the key to the back, then pressing the button you want mapped and the paddle you want it mapped to simultaneously. This is useful for face button actions since you would no longer have to take your right thumb off the right stick.

The back of the Impact also has a rubbery textured grip that sticks to your hands more than the standard DS4.

Removing the Paddles

If the paddles get in your way for specific games, or if you just want a certain number of paddles, they are removable. They slide upward and snap out, but it takes a bit of force to do so.

Removing the Thumbsticks

With the thumbstick removal key, you can unlock the base that holds down the sticks. You can then pull the sticks outward.

Swapping in Thumbsticks

Swapping in Thumbsticks

Installing new thumbsticks is simply the reverse of taking them out. Press them down into place, put the base ring back in, then lock them with the key.

In the package came two concave sticks, similar to those on the DS4. The mound-style grippy sticks were installed by default.

Overall Impressions

Overall Impressions

Overall, the Scuf Impact felt substantial in my hands, and its extra features were certainly useful. Customizability was easy to figure out, through the angle of the grips take some getting used to. The extra grip of the mound-style thumbsticks is a great addition, especially for someone whose thumbs occasionally slip off the standard sticks. If you're looking for a competitive advantage, then the four programmable paddles will be a tremendous help.

Keep in mind that $140 is around three times the price of a DualShock 4, so you'll want to think about how much use you'll get out of these extra functions.

The Scuf Infinity 4PS Pro is an updated version of the previous Infinity 4PS. The paddles are now removable, and Scuf claims to have improved the circuitry for better response out of the paddles.

Controller and Accessories

Controller and Accessories

The Infinity 4PS Pro controller comes with extended triggers for R2 and L2, the thumbstick removal key, screw tool, and magnetic remapping key. This controller takes the shape of the DualShock 4 as opposed to the Xbox-like design of the Impact. We received the gunmetal/red/black colorway.

Like the standard DualShock 4, the audio jack is situated directly under the controller.

Triggers

Triggers

The R2 and L2 have deep grooves much similar to the DS4, and the triggers are removable like the Impact.

Extended Triggers

Extended Triggers

Just like the Scuf Impact, R2 and L2 pop out by carefully lifting underneath the triggers. The extended triggers give you more surface area to make contact with.

Trigger Stops

Trigger Stops

With the screw tool, you can adjust the trigger stops to make a shorter or longer throw. You can also engage the hair trigger underneath R2 and L2 using the tool, which will shorten the actuation point for the triggers.

Paddles, Grip, and Remapping

Paddles, Grip, and Remapping

Two programmable paddles reside on the back of the Infinity 4PS Pro. The electromagnetic remapping (EMR) key attaches to the back, and the remapping process remains the same; press the button and paddle you want mapped together simultaneously.

Removing the Paddles

Removing the Paddles

If you have no use for the paddles during certain situations, you can easily remove them pushing them upward and snapping them out of place.

Thumbsticks Removed

Thumbsticks Removed

With the thumbstick removal key, you can take out the sticks and replace them. The Infinity 4PS Pro doesn't come packaged with an alternative, but different sticks are sold separately. The ones that come stock with this controller are mound-style and have a strong grip, which work extremely well.

Overall Impressions

Overall Impressions

Features such as extra grip on the thumbsticks and handles, programmable paddles, and extended triggers make the Infinity 4PS Pro an appealing controller option. Its shape is identical to the DualShock 4, so PS4 users will feel right home. But note that it carries a $130 price tag--nearly three times as much as a DS4.
