Alien: Covenant doesn't hit theaters for another two months, but director Ridley Scott has already stated that he is planning to shoot the follow-up soon. Now, the director has revealed that it will be called Alien: Awakening.
In a new interview with Fandango, Scott revealed that not only would Awakening be the title of the next film in the long-running sci-fi horror franchise, it might actually sit chronologically between 2012's Prometheus and Covenant.
"There will be another one before we kind of literally and logically, clockwise, back into the rear back head of [the original] Alien," he said. "It will go Prometheus, Awakening, Covenant. There will be more after this. If this is successful, and then the next one, and then there will definitely be three more."
This follows Scott's earlier comments that he was keen to get going on the next movie. "You've got to assume, to a certain extent, success [for Alien: Covenant], and from that you'd better be ready," he said. "You don't want a two-year gap. So I'll be ready to go again next year."
"If you really want a franchise, I can keep cranking it for another six," he added. "I'm not going to close it down again. No way."

[UPDATE] Screenwriter Zak Penn, who is reportedly in negotiations to write the new Matrix film, has spoken up on Twitter about plans for the upcoming film. He said that the film is not a reboot or remake. While he can't come right out and say that, at this point in time, he went on to mention films like Animatrix, as well as the growing X-Men Cinematic Universe with Deadpool and Logan. It seems as though the new Matrix film will be expanding the world instead of rebooting it.
Original story below.
Warner Bros. is reportedly planning a reboot of hit 1999 sci-fi movie The Matrix.
Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. is "in the early stages of developing a relaunch of The Matrix," with Zak Penn in talks to write a first draft. Penn previously co-wrote X-Men: The Last Stand's script and worked on the story of Avengers Assemble, among other projects.
Additionally, Michael B. Jordan (Fantastic Four, Creed, Black Panther) is being lined up to star in the reboot, though there is apparently a long way to go before anything is finalized. The Wachowskis, the siblings who wrote and directed the original and its sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, are not currently involved in the nascent project, though Warner Bros. reportedly want the directorial pair on board to some extent, even if it's just to give their blessings for the reboot to go ahead.
The original trilogy's producer, Joel Silver, is reportedly keen to be involved, but The Hollywood Reporter says Warner Bros. is wary of getting the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon producer on board because of his rumored strained relationship with the Wachowskis.
Representatives for Warner Bros., the Wachowskis, and Silver all declined to comment.
The Matrix was released in 1999 to universal acclaim, winning four Academy Awards and generating over $450 million at the worldwide box office. Reloaded and Revolutions received good and mixed reviews, respectively.
All three films starred Keanu Reeves as main protagonist Neo. Reeves was most recently seen in John Wick: Chapter 2, and while promoting that film he told Yahoo Movies that he'd be open to doing another Matrix film, but only if the Wachowskis were involved. "They would have to write it and direct it," he told the site. "And then we'd see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that'd be weird, but why not?"
However, it is reported that Warner Bros. wants a fresh start for the franchise and would therefore seek out a new director and star.
Warning: The video featured in this article contains spoilers for Prey.
Bethesda has released a video of the first 35 minutes of Prey, for those of you that are excited about Arkane's upcoming action game and don't mind a few early game spoilers. The video showcases some of the abilities players will have at their disposal as protagonist Morgan Yu.
It also digs into the upgrading and crafting system, in addition to providing a closer look at the weird shape-shifting aliens you'll be up against. To reiterate, there's a fairly big plot revelation early in this video, so if you want to go into Prey fresh, you may want to skip this video.
Prey is being developed by Dishonored developer Arkane's Austin studio. It is a re-imagining of the 2006 original and replaces the canceled sequel originally in development at Human Head Studios.
Sega has released the first gameplay video for Sonic Forces, the game formerly known as Project Sonic 2017.
The video shows the Blue Blur bolting through a city under siege, collecting rings, using his homing attack to destroy enemies and, of course, leaping between platforms. All the while, Death Egg Robot sentinels can be seen in the background toppling buildings and launching bombs.
Sonic Forces is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch in late 2017. It runs on a brand-new engine that Sega is calling "The Hedgehog Engine 2." The game's new name, meanwhile, is a reference to the battle between the forces of good and evil.
In other Sonic news, Sonic Mania has been delayed from this spring to summer. A more specific release date hasn't been provided yet, but Sega showed off the game again, teasing new enemies, preorder bonuses, a collector's edition vinyl album, and the return of the Flying Battery Zone. You can watch a video of that here.
After a few delays, Mission: Impossible 6 is about to start production. It has now been confirmed that star Tom Cruise will be joined by Superman himself--Man of Steel's Henry Cavill.
The news was revealed by director Christopher McQuarrie, who addressed Cavill directly on Instagram. His message read: "Had a thought. Curious if you're interested in a role in the 6th installment of Mission: Impossible. No pressure."
Cavill himself replied, stating that he was indeed interested. McQuarrie then laid out some caveats for the job: "Must enjoy extreme heights, high speeds, motor vehicles of all varieties (especially aircraft), practical stunts, firearms, and sporadic exposition. All good?"
The conversation ended with McQuarrie telling the British actor: "Welcome aboard. Your social media account will self destruct in 5 seconds."
McQuarrie went on to explain that the movie will involve an "emotional journey" for Ethan Hunt, played by Cruise. "I've seen five of these movies and I don't know who Ethan Hunt is," he said. "One movie sort of dealt with his personal life; the other movies are about people speculating what's really going on in Ethan's head. I want to know who Ethan is in this movie, I want an emotional journey for this character, and Tom really embraced it.
The last movie in the series, 2015's Rogue Nation, was also directed by McQuarrie and made $682 million at the worldwide box office. Mission: Impossible 6 arrives in theaters on July 27, 2018.
Retailer GameStop will have Nintendo Switch units available for sale "as early as Wednesday, March 22," so if you've been after one but have been affected by the stock shortages, this may be the opportunity you've been waiting for.
GameStop has advised customers to "check their stores first for availability" and noted that it will only have "individual" units available, suggesting bundles with games may not be offered.
"GameStop continues to see strong demand from customers who are looking to purchase the Nintendo Switch system," its senior director of merchandising said in a press release. "We are meeting this demand by securing additional systems as fast as we can to ensure customers are able to purchase this innovative gaming technology.
"The customer enthusiasm and response we have seen so far has been incredible as we continue to sell through our supply of systems. We strongly suggest any customer who is still looking to purchase a Nintendo Switch, visit one of our stores as soon as they can. This new allotment will go fast."
A GameStop representative told us customers "cannot reserve units in advance" due to "the limited amount GameStop has received."
Demand for the Switch has been high and Nintendo is reportedly doubling the amount of units produced to meet this. "People briefed on the plans" have said that although Nintendo initially planned to make 8 million consoles before the end of March 2018, this has now been increased to 16 million.
A new trailer for the upcoming Transformers: The Last Knight has arrived. The fifth movie in the hugely successful action series hits theaters in June, and this latest preview focuses on young star Isabela Moner. Check it out below:
Earlier this week, a new clip from the movie was released, which introduced a new Autobot called Canopy. The first trailer was released in December, followed by this Super Bowl teaser.
Transformers: The Last Knight opens on June 23, 2017. Mark Wahlberg returns from 2014's Transformers: Age of Extinction and will be joined by Anthony Hopkins, Josh Duhamel, Stanley Tucci, and John Goodman. It is directed by Michael Bay, who has previously stated that this will be his last movie in the series.
In a recent interview with Collider, Wahlberg spoke about being part of such a huge movie. "I'm like everybody else," he said "I just approach it as a piece of the puzzle where we're all here to service Michael's vision.
"It's perfectly fine like that. I never look at it as more pressure or less pressure unless of course we're telling a true story like in Lone Survivor where you have real people depending on you to get it right and do them justice. But there's no pressure now."
Nvidia has released a Mass Effect: Andromeda video showing off gameplay running in 4K resolution. It features developers from BioWare discussing the technology it leveraged to bring the new Andromeda galaxy to life.
In addition to HDR, Mass Effect: Andromeda also supports Nvidia's Ansel technology, which--according to its press release--is "a revolutionary new way to capture in-game photography." Ansel allows players to capture screenshots in 360 degrees then share them for viewing on PCs, smart devices, and in VR.
According to producer Michael Gamble, combining Nvidia's technology with the Frostbite engine has also been particularly beneficial for the PC version of Andromeda, allowing the studio to give the game a level of detail it has "never been able to show on screen."
You can see the video for yourself above. Remember to switch to 4K using the settings menu.
After over a decade on sale, Sony is ending production of PlayStation 3 units soon--in Japan at least.
The console's entry on PlayStation's official Japanese website (translated by Gematsu) has been updated to read, "Shipments are scheduled to end soon."
This doesn't necessarily mean global production will cease any time soon, however. While Japanese and western consumers are typically quick to adopt new technology (and therefore sales would be expected to dry up sooner than in other markets), other territories are slower to receive new hardware--hence products often see longer tails. For example, while the PS3 came to Japan and North America in November 2006, it didn't launch in Brazil until 2010, so production could be expected to continue for some time there.
Much of the PS3's early life was marred by a high retail price and reports that it was difficult to develop for, but the console enjoyed a resurgence of sorts later on thanks to high-quality exclusive titles like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Journey, LittleBigPlanet, and The Last of Us.
Over the course of its lifetime, the PS3 shifted somewhere in the region of 84 million units, which puts it approximately level with its main competitor, the Xbox 360. Both Sony and Microsoft have now stopped divulging sales figures for their legacy consoles, so exact numbers are unknown. Whichever is ahead, they are likely the fourth- and fifth-best-selling consoles of all time, behind the PlayStation 2, original PlayStation, and the Wii.
PS3's predecessor, the PlayStation 2, ended production in 2013 after 12 years on the market. That console was more successful than the PS3, and eventually became the most successful console of all time in terms of quantity sold, with over 150 million units shifted worldwide.
It remains to be seen when the PS3 will cease production in the west.
Mass Effect: Andromeda's day one patch will not include any animation or character model improvements, despite widespread fan criticism of the way characters look and move.
Andromeda's lead designer, Ian Frazier, responded to a Tweet asking if the day one update will improve the character models by saying, "At day 1? No, that ship has sailed."
Meanwhile, Frazier also confirmed that developer BioWare is looking to add new skin tones to the game's character creation mode in a new patch. He went on to multiplayer sound issues are "under investigation." BioWare is encouraging players experiencing any further problems to report them on EA's troubleshooting page.
In other Andromeda news, BioWare has announced a new companion app for the game's multiplayer mode. Called Apex HQ, it will track your progression in the mode, displaying information like which characters you've unlocked and what items and rewards you've collected.
We've played Andromeda's multiplayer--check out what we thought here. Or for more on the upcoming sci-fi adventure, keep an eye out for our Story of Mass Effect documentary series. Episode 1 will drop on Saturday, March 16, with Episode 2 to follow a day later. Take a look at a teaser for the minidoc here.
With the news that The Batman won't start production until next year--and with The Flash currently without a director--DC only has Aquaman shooting in 2017. However, it has been reported that the studio is still hoping to get another film in front of the cameras this year.
Variety writer Justin Kroll revealed the news on Twitter. He stated:
With BATMAN likely shooting in 2018, WB still would like one more DC property to shoot this year other than AQUAMAN
Aquaman is the only DC movie with a confirmed release date beyond 2017, and even this recently moved back two months. It is now coming out on December 21, 2018. This week, director James Wan posted images of the exotic locations he is scouting for the shoot--check them out here.
Nintendo is reacting to the demand for Switch consoles by doubling the amount of units produced, according to a new report.
The Japanese company planned to manufacture 8 million consoles before the end of March 2018, states the Wall Street Journal (via GamesIndustry), citing "people briefed on the plans." That number has now been "at least" doubled to 16 million.
Nintendo will be hoping to maintain--and meet--demand for the console throughout 2017, with major releases such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Arms, and Splatoon 2 on the way relatively soon.
