Zelda: Breath Of the Wild - How To Find The Master Sword

By Matt Espineli on Mar 04, 2017 09:30 pm

Acquiring The Legendary Master Sword

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild breaks away from tradition, discarding many of the time-honored tropes the series has been known for. Despite this, it still keeps a few iconic elements from past games. The most notable is the Master Sword, which remains a useful tool you can use to complete your quest. But acquiring the blade is no easy task, as it's hidden somewhere beyond your reach. Here are directions to help you find the Master Sword. Be wary, there are slight spoilers ahead.

For more on Breath of the Wild, check out our full review of the game, our compilation of our guides and tips, and our feature detailing everything you need to know about it.

Breath of the Wild is out now as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch; the game also arrives for Wii U on the same day. For more on the game, you can check out our full review of the game, our compilation of our guides and tips, and our feature detailing everything you need to know about it.

Where Is The Master Sword?

It's revealed early on that Link lost the Master Sword after a failed attempt to defeat Calamity Ganon. In the 100 years between that battle and Link's re-awakening, the legendary blade was considered lost. But after spending countless hours exploring, we discovered that the Master Sword is located at center of the Great Hyrule Forest, which is to the north of Hyrule castle. But in order to reach the blade, you need to successfully traverse the Lost Woods.

Important Requirement: You Need 13 Hearts To Get The Master Sword

While you're able to reach the Master Sword immediately upon leaving Hyrule Plateau, it's impossible to obtain the blade early on. You're required to have at least 13 hearts to survive pulling it from its resting place; temporary hearts do not count towards this amount. If you haven't attained the necessary heart count, we suggest completing the multitude of Shrines scattered across the world to earn the Spirit Orbs needed to gain additional Heart Containers.

In summary, you need 10 Heart Containers to survive pulling the sword (you start the game with three hearts), so you need to complete 40 shrines to get the health needed.

What If I Used My Spirit Orbs To Buy A Bunch Of Stamina Vessels?

If you've already completed a significant number of shrines, but used its Spirit Orbs for Stamina Vessels instead of Heart Containers, then don't fret. In Hateno Village, there's a mopey-looking statue at the bottom of the hill on the other side of the village entrance that can reassign your upgrades.

If you talk to it, you'll initiate a sidequest where the statue steals some of your essence (either a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel); speak to it again to reclaim what was taken from you. It then offers you a deal where you can sell one of your Heart Containers or Stamina Vessels for 100 Rupees. Talk to it again to acquire either a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel for 120 rupees.

This is a handy resource, as you can essentially use it to get the Heart Containers you need to acquire the Master Sword. And if you want you Stamina Vessels back, you can return to reassign once more.

How To Get To The Lost Woods

To get to the Lost Woods, follow the path through Mishi Woods located northeast of Hyrule castle, just before the Death Mountain region. You'll know you're on the right track when you pass by the Woodland Stable. Look at the map above for reference.

Traversing The Lost Woods

Navigating the Lost Woods is confusing at first; if you run through it mindlessly, a thick fog consumes you and brings you back to the entrance. To avoid this, simply follow the flow of the particles moving in the air. Its direction changes often as you progress, so make sure to keep an eye on when it shifts.

The Korok Forest: Home Of The Master Sword

Successfully navigating through the Lost Woods leads you to the Korok Forest. The Master Sword is found in the clearing. Simply walk up to the legendary blade to trigger a cutscene, and then press A to initiate pulling the sword from its resting place.

Using The Master Sword

The Master Sword is a valuable asset in your fight against Calamity Ganon, as its power far exceeds any other weapon in the game. It can also be used against normal enemies; but be wary, using the blade too much causes it to steadily lose its attack power for a brief duration of time.

Every week, GameSpot Universe covers what's big in film, television, and a whole lot more. There is so much going on in the world of entertainment that you may have missed something. Don't worry, we've got you covered, as we're diving into the biggest news pieces from the week.

Get Out Takes Top Box Office Slot

It was pretty surprising to see Jordan Peele's horror film Get Out do as well as it did. It took the top box office slot for the weekend of February 25, making $30.5 million during its opening weekend. The film beat out The Lego Batman Movie and John Wick: Chapter 2.

Find out the top ten movies for that weekend here.

The Oscars Recap

On Sunday, February 26, the 89th Academy Awards were held in Los Angeles, recognizing greatness in film for another year. You can check out our full recap here. One moment that unleashed a lot of fury on Twitter was Suicide Squad winning the award for Best Hair and Makeup. However, that wasn't the most talked-about part of the evening. Everyone lost their minds during the Best Picture announcement, which was mistakenly given to La La Land. Moonlight was then declared the winner in one of the most confusing Oscar moments of all time.

You can learn why that happened here.

Everything Coming And Going From Netflix For March

Every month, Netflix announces what is coming and going for the upcoming month. In March, we'll be losing the Jaws films, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey and more. However, Netflix subscribers will be able to watch Jurassic Park, This Is Spinal Tap, the first season of Marvel's Iron Fist, and a whole lot more. Many of these selections will be available for download.

You can check out the full list here.

Guardians of the Galaxy's Second Trailer Dropped

One of the most anticipated films of 2017 that doesn't have "Star Wars" in the title is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Luckily for fans, we got a brand-new trailer this week, which gave us a bit more insight into the upcoming film. You can watch it for yourself then check out our breakdown to find out a little bit more about the film's new characters.

Aquaman Test Footage Revealed

The Justice League movie may not be coming out until November, but we're starting to see more about the upcoming film. This week, director Zack Snyder revealed some footage of Aquaman swimming under water. This time, it doesn't look like actor Jason Mamoa is holding his breath, like he did in his cameo in Batman v. Superman.

You can see the full clip for yourself here.

Old Man Logan Comic Gets New Creative Team

Did you see Logan yet? If you loved it, you might want to check out the comic series Old Man Logan. The current movie is loosely based on that character--very loosely. The comic series is going strong, and we learned during an interview with the new creative team that Logan will be fighting a version of Hulk, just like during Wolverine's first appearance.

You can check out the whole interview here.

New Alien Covenant Trailer

This May, Ridley Scott will be directing the newest Alien film, and it looks awesome. It seems like the franchise is leaning more towards a mixture of horror and action and keeping the same tone as the original film.

The newest trailer dropped this week, and it's pretty creepy.

Split's DVD Will Have An Alternate Ending

Split will be available digitally on April 4 and on DVD/Blu-ray on April 18. We learned that there will be an alternate ending and deleted scenes on the home video release. Considering how crazy the ending of the film is already, we're curious to see what else M. Night Shyamalan has to offer.

You can check out all the details here.

GameSpot Universe Watches A Butt-Fighting Anime

This week, the folks from GameSpot watched Keijo, an anime where people fight with their butts. It is quite possibly one of the weirdest things we've seen.

You can check out how the rest of the team reacted to butt fighting here.

Anime Show Featuring The Avengers Coming From Marvel

Marvel is producing a new anime series featuring The Avengers. It will be titled Marvel Future Avengers and premieres in Japan this summer.

Netflix Reveals Trailer For Will Smith Movie That Features Orcs

During the Academy Awards, Netflix unveiled a trailer for its upcoming original film Bright. It stars Will Smith and is directed by David Ayer. What made this such an eye-catching video was that it was set in modern day and featured orcs.

It won't be out until December, but you can check out the trailer here.

Ducktales Gets Its First Trailer

Finally, we got to see the first trailer for Disney's new Ducktales series. Yes, the show will feature an updated version of the original theme song, which can be heard in the background of the video, and it feels so right. Ducktales will premiere later this year.
