Netflix's The Dragon Prince Season 2 Coming In 2019

By Steve Watts on Oct 06, 2018 12:28 am

The Netflix animated fantasy series The Dragon Prince just debuted in September, and it's already been renewed for a second season. During a panel at New York Comic-Con, the creative team announced it will be coming in 2019. The official Twitter account followed up with some key art.

The announcement was accompanied by a new trailer that showed some of the story we can expect from the second season. "It's a big story, and we have a lot more to tell," said co-creator Aaron Ehasz. (This page will be updated with the trailer once it's released online.)

The Dragon Prince borrows talent from Nickelodeon's revered original series Avatar: The Last Airbender, particularly in Ehasz who was a writer on that show. It borrows some thematic elements and is similarly set in a fantasy world--though it's more western high-fantasy with magic and dragons.

In GameSpot's The Dragon Prince Season 1 review, Nick Sherman praised the tight plotting and rich world design, but said it needed more time to deliver on its potential. "If you're curious about The Dragon Prince and want to tap into another grand animated adventure, you should," he said. "It begins more confident in its worldbuilding, tone, and themes than Avatar did, but when The Last Airbender finished its first 20 episodes, I was hooked. With The Dragon Prince, I'll have to see more to know whether I'll fall completely in love with this world."

What's New On Amazon Prime Video: Movies, TV, and Originals This Week (US)

By Mat Elfring on Oct 06, 2018 12:14 am

It's a brand-new month, and those signed up for Amazon Prime will get a whole new batch of movies and TV series to watch as of Monday, which was October 1. Additionally, one of Amazon's biggest original series returns for a new season. Let's take a look at all of this week's additions--which is quite a sizable list thanks to the start of a new month.

Those looking for TV series to watch for the first time or binge all over again have quite a few choices now that the new month has begun. Both seasons of the Edgar Wright comedy Spaced will be available to stream. The series follows flatmates Tim (Simon Pegg) and Daisy (Jessica Hynes), two twenty-somethings living together in London. If you're a fan of Shaun of the Dead, this is a must-watch series. Also, every season of the classic sitcom Growing Pains is coming to Amazon for those looking for a nostalgia trip.

There are a ton of movies coming to the service as well on the first of the month, including the sci-fi/action movie Starship Troopers, which surprisingly still holds up. If you're looking for something a bit more scary--since Halloween is right around the corner--you will want to check out [REC] 4, Candyman, Child's Play, Flatliners, and of course, Nightbreed, which is one of the most underrated horror films of the '90s.

Finally, the hit Amazon series The Man in the High Castle comes back for a third season. The series is based on a Phillip K Dick novel from 1962 where the Allies lost World War II. Originally, this season was supposed to come to Amazon sometime in 2017.

Check out the full list of what's arriving this week, and see what's coming to Amazon for the rest of October.

Amazon Prime Video (October 2018): New TV Shows And Movies In The US

By Mat Elfring on Oct 06, 2018 12:11 am

October is here, and Amazon Prime Video has a whole slew of brand new content for you to binge, from movies to TV series to original content. There is a long list of new stuff being added, but we have a few suggestions for you to check out. Here's what you have to look forward to in the upcoming month.

Because Halloween is right around the corner, you're probably looking for a few scares, and Amazon Prime has you covered. October 1 brought with it Clive Barker's Nightbreed. Craig Sheffer plays Aaron Boone, a rebel who is drawn to a place called Midian, where deformed monsters live. Boone becomes one of the monsters himself, and a serial killer tries to make Boone a scapegoat. It is Barker's most underrated film as a director or writer. Additionally, the Jim Carrey horror/thriller The Number 23 hits the service, and while it is not a good movie by any means, it is an entertaining movie to watch.

As far as Prime Originals go, The Man in the High Castle has returned for Season 3, and Lore gets a second season on October 19. Also, the Amazon children's series Tumbleleaf gets a Halloween special on October 19.

Below, you'll find a full listing of everything coming to Amazon in October. The vast majority of the service's releases for the month came on October 1. If you're looking for more subscription service releases for October, check out what Hulu and Netflix have in store this month.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey: How Long Is The New Open-World Game?

By Jordan Ramée on Oct 05, 2018 11:45 pm

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is out now on all platforms, and it's the series' largest game to date. The overall map in Odyssey is over twice the size of the one in Assassin's Creed Origins, and it's filled with a branching main storyline and hundreds of side quests. Simply playing through the game's campaign only scratches the surface of how much you can do.

For our Assassin's Creed Odyssey review, editor Alessandro Fillari completed the game's main story in just over 50 hours. And that's without hitting every single island and side mission available. There's a broad array of optional content to tackle outside the main campaign, including additional islands to explore and mythological creatures to slay.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey also has nine different endings. Not every ending is dependent solely on late-game decisions either, so you won't be able to save near the story's end to quickly see what you missed. For some of the endings, you'll need to make key choices early on--even as early as the game's opening two hours--and then make dialogue decisions or take certain actions throughout the campaign. You'll have to play through the entire game numerous times just to see everything, so if you're looking to see all the game has to offer, Assassin's Creed Odyssey will probably take you hundreds of hours to fully complete. That's not counting the two episodic post-launch expansions--Legacy of the First Blade and The Fate of Atlantis--that continue Kassandra and Alexios' story.

In our review, Alessandro gave Odyssey an 8/10, and described the game's ambition as "admirable" while also complimenting "its rich attention to detail" and "multi-faceted narrative with strong protagonists at the lead." Unfortunately, its massive campaign was occasionally "tiresome" so going for all nine of Odyssey's endings will be a daunting, time-consuming task. With no Assassin's Creed game scheduled for 2019, it's clear Ubisoft wants you to be playing Odyssey for a very long time.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey launched today, October 5, for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey: Release Date, Review, Length, And Everything You Need To Know

By Michael Higham on Oct 05, 2018 11:31 pm

So much has already been said about Assassin's Creed Odyssey leading up to its release on October 5 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. But here, we have all the bases covered on the series' latest entry in one place. We'll run down many of Odyssey's broader features and go through the basics of what you should know before jumping in. Everything from story to combat tips are outlined below, along with links to more detailed guides if you wish to dig deeper. Note that there are no major story spoilers in this article.

When And Where Is Odyssey Set?

You're probably aware that Assassin's Creed Odyssey takes place in Ancient Greece, but it specifically covers the Peloponnesian War fought between Athens and Sparta. The game opens with a 300-esque battle scene where you take control of King Leonidas of Sparta during the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE, then transitions to the start of the main protagonist's story almost 50 years later in 431 BCE.

Greece makes for some breathtaking views.
Greece makes for some breathtaking views.

If you've followed Odyssey since it was first revealed at E3 2018, then you'll know that you can choose between taking on the role of a female or male lead; Kassandra and Alexios are two sides of the same coin and play exactly the same--the main differences are, of course, the voice acting and character model. Your choice also affects the narrative slightly; whoever you choose to play as is made to be the older sibling of the two. You come from Spartan lineage, but the game doesn't force you into aligning with either side of the war since you're a mercenary trying uncover the truth of your family's disappearance.

Prominent Greek figures like Socrates and Hippocrates make appearances throughout Odyssey, and you can interact with them as they offer side quests of their own. While historical fiction has always been the foundation of Assassin's Creed lore, it's never been afraid to incorporate the supernatural. Odyssey takes it a step further by pitting you against mythology itself; one example is a fight against Medusa where you try to avoid getting turned into stone.

Catch Up On Assassin's Creed Lore

This is a long-running franchise, but Odyssey can be a good point to jump into the series. Knowledge of previous events isn't necessarily required to enjoy the new game. However, if you need a refresher on the everything that have taken place up to this point, be sure to read our Assassin's Creed story summary.

How Long Is Odyssey?

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Assassin's Creed Odyssey is huge--its open world is about twice as big as Origins. That may not seem as daunting when you consider the fact that the Mediterranean Sea makes up a large portion of the map and that you'll spend plenty of time sailing the high seas. Regardless, there's still a great deal of ground to cover throughout Greece's mainland and several islands.

As for game length, it's difficult to get an accurate range since every player will engage in a varying number of optional quests and activities along the way. Estimates have been around 50 hours to complete the main story and a decent chunk of side activities. GameSpot editor Alessandro Fillari spent 60 hours with the game for the purposes of his review, and there remain more optional content for him to take part in.

New to the franchise is Exploration Mode. Instead of having waypoints and objective markers littered on screen in the traditional Guided Mode, Exploration Mode puts the onus on you to figure out where to go to complete quests. This means you'll have to pay closer attention to NPC dialogue and investigate the environment more closely.

This is especially true if you take on the optional quest to hunt down a cultist organization. They're a web of mysterious figures with hidden identities scattered throughout Greece and you'll need to do investigative work to locate and assassinate them. Sometimes, you'll happen to take them down in the midst of a side mission that they're involved in, but you'll often have to dig for clues on their whereabouts whether or not you've activated Exploration mode.

Fighting With Style

Odyssey builds off of Origins' combat system, but it introduces some key changes. Shields are no longer an option, which naturally pushes fights towards a faster pace. The skill tree remains divided in three categories attributed to specific playstyles (Hunter, Warrior, and Assassin), but it features some neat new abilities. You may think the Spartan Kick is in the game just for kicks and giggles until you realize that it's super effective for booting enemies off cliffs or creating space in fights. Another setting-appropriate ability is the Rush Assassination that lets you put the Spear of Leonidas to use during long-distance stealth kills.

The skill tree includes several abilities that allow you to tinker with different character builds.
The skill tree includes several abilities that allow you to tinker with different character builds.

In addition to multiple types of melee weapons (like polearms, swords, and maces), you have a bow that's both useful for attacking long-range and inflicting status effects on enemies. The Arrow Master skill unlocks arrows that can poison, paralyze, or explode on impact, opening up numerous possibilities in combat; combine that with Devastating Shot and your projectiles will be even stronger. The skill tree can be overwhelming at first, but we have a few tips on some good abilities to pick up early and how to use them in clever ways.

Don't worry about min-maxing in the skill tree; you can respec at any time for small cost. This affords you the opportunity to experiment with different combat approaches and character builds.

Setting Sail In The Mediterranean

With multiple islands scattered across Greece, great emphasis is placed on sailing and ship combat in Odyssey, essentially taking a page out of Black Flag's book. Engaging with hostile ships will have you firing arrow barrages, tossing waves of javelins, or using the naval ram to inflict damage. Once an enemy ship's health is depleted, you can either sink it for a small reward or board it with your crew to get better loot. If you board the ship, you'll have to get your hands dirty and fight the opposing crew.

Enemy ships vary in size, health, and strength, so be sure to know what you're up against before engaging. Throughout Odyssey, you'll upgrade your ship and recruit shipmates from quests or smooth dialogue interactions. Different crew members offer specific bonuses and attributes for your ship.

Play Your Part

Odyssey doubles down on RPG elements. There's leveling up, skill trees, gear scores, and numerous optional quests, which was implemented in Origins, but the series dips its toes into branching story threads for the first time. Dialogue trees permeate character interactions and you'll face consequences for your actions whether they be good or bad. The way you decide to complete some quests will affect the resulting narrative and can also spill into the details of other quest-lines; don't be surprised if there are unforeseen consequences and collateral damage.

With branching dialogue comes romance options. You're free to romance as many of the available characters as you want, and the circumstances for which you can romance them may change based on other decisions. Most often, these partners will become part of your ship's crew, which may be a bit of an unceremonious conclusion for love interests. However, these scenarios can play out strangely, and you can see for yourself how romance can feel awkward or forced.

By nature of being an RPG that deals with choice and consequence, there are multiple endings in Assassin's Creed Odyssey; nine to be specific. Unfortunately, you'll be hard-pressed to see them all in one playthrough since key decisions early in the game will affect the possible endings open to you.

You now have more agency in how the story plays out thanks to branching dialogue and quest decisions.

Different Versions, Special Editions, And DLC

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is out soon, but you can still snag the pre-order bonuses offered. Pre-ordering from the Ubisoft Store grants you access to the Blind King mission, Best Buy gifts you a $10 rewards certificate, and GameStop includes the Blind King mission and a Spartan helmet keychain. Aside from the standard edition of the game, there's a Deluxe edition ($80) that includes an XP and drachmae (in-game money) boost, the Kronos and Herald of Dusk gear pack, and the Capricornus naval pack. The Gold edition ($110) packs the DLC season pass, Secrets of Greece and Blind King bonus missions, and lets you start playing now. The Ultimate edition ($120) includes all the aforementioned content from both the Deluxe and Gold editions. There are few other special editions with collector's statues that you check out in our pre-order guide.

For the PC players out there, make sure your system is powerful enough to run the game properly. If you're aiming for 4K resolution with High settings, Ubisoft recommends a system with at least an AMD Ryzen 1700X or Intel Core i7-7700 CPU, AMD Vega 64 or Nvidia GTX 1080 video card, and 16GB of RAM. For those not doing 4K, be sure to read up on the minimum and recommended PC specs to run AC Odyssey smoothly.

Review

You can read or watch our review of Assassin's Creed Odyssey right now; editor Alessandro Fillari concluded: "Assassin's Creed Odyssey's ambition is admirable, which is reflected in its rich attention to detail for the era and its approach to handling the multi-faceted narrative with strong protagonists at the lead. While its large-scale campaign--clocking in at over 50 hours--can occasionally be tiresome, and some features don't quite make the impact they should, Odyssey makes great strides in its massive and dynamic world, and it's a joy to venture out and leave your mark on its ever-changing setting." Destiny 2 Weekly Reset: Xur Location, New Updates, Nightfall, Ascendant Challenge, And More

By Chris Pereira on Oct 05, 2018 11:26 pm

As is customary for the game, Destiny 2 players know Tuesday is the big day of the week. That's when the weekly reset takes place, refreshing a variety of timed challenges and bounties, and changing what tasks are laid out in front of you. This week is no different at a basic level, although you should be aware before diving in that there isn't a major new piece of content that's been introduced, as in recent weeks. That said, if you didn't speed through Forsaken, there may be something new for you, as the weekly missions offered by Petra in the Dreaming City have started over again. Here's everything you need to know about the Dreaming City, Nightfall, Ascendant Challenge, and more for the current week.

Where Is Xur?

We've reached the weekend, which means the mysterious merchant is back. Xur can be found on Io in Giant's Scar, and he's got a slate of Exotic armor and a weapon (Skyburner's Oath) for sale. Check out our full Xur location guide for all the details.

Sleeper Simulant Nerf, Festival Of The Lost, And Updates Inbound

Bungie's weekly blog post was a big one, as it outlined a variety of changes coming as part of two updates launching in October. The first will coincide with the launch of Festival of the Lost on October 16, while the second hits later in the month and nerfs Sleeper Simulant in Gambit. Other changes include transmat effects being added to the Collection, damage buffs for certain weapon types, tweaked Exotic drop rates, and fewer Edge Transits (hooray!).

Ascendant Challenge

For players who have advanced far enough in Forsaken, you may be ready for a high-end activity. The Ascendant Challenge is just the ticket, providing a difficult mission of sorts to take part in for some Powerful gear--provided you can find where to go. This time, you'll enter the challenge through a portal located in the Bay of Drowne. This takes you to the Agonarch Abyss, where you'll be platforming (probably to your death at least a few times).

Before starting, you'll need to pick up the bounty from Petra and to secure a Tincture of Queensfoil, a consumable item that provides the Ascendant buff that allows you to see and travel through a Taken portal to enter the Ascendant Plane.

Spider Bounty -- Wanted: Gravetide Summoner

The set of bounties available from Spider have rotated yet again. One of these in particular is worth grabbing, though you'll need five Ghost Fragments to purchase it. Completing the bounty, Wanted: Gravetide Summoner, will reward you with Powerful gear. Yes, this is a repeat of last week, but it's found in a slightly different spot, meaning you're doing a different Lost Sector.

As always, this provides you with an Adventure to do. This one is located on Titan, right next to the Siren's Watch landing zone (rather than The Rig last week).

Nightfall

Another avenue to Powerful gear is the Nightfall Strike. Taking part in the Nightfall allows you to pick from three different Strikes; this week's choices include Lake of Shadows, Tree of Probabilities, and The Arms Dealer. The corresponding bounties for Powerful gear, as usual, ask you to complete a Nightfall and to complete one with a score above 100,000.

Eververse

Tess at Eververse has new weekly bounties, the most expensive of which is Crucible Crux, but it also rewards you with the most Bright Dust based on what you spend on the bounty. This requires you to complete matches in the Crucible, with wins netting you extra progress.

Tess has also cycled in a new wave of items to get your hands on. Most important to grab is the Rise to the Challenge bounty. This only asks you to complete a challenge to receive a Prismatic Facet. This item allows you to activate the Prismatic Matrix, which is just an overly complex term for what is basically a chest with 10 cosmetic rewards inside. The Matrix's items rotate each week; here's what's available right now:

  • Sanctified Vigilance Shell (Exotic Ghost shell)
  • Transcendent Geometry (Exotic Warlock ornament for Vesper of Radius)
  • Aim to Misbehave (Exotic ornament for Malfeasance)
  • Dragonfly Regalia Grasps (Legendary Hunter gauntlets)
  • Dragonfly Regalia Greaves (Legendary Titan leg armor)
  • Smooth Dance (Legendary emote)
  • Where Stars Collide (Legendary ship)
  • Endymion Cavalcade (Legendary vehicle)
  • Mappa Mundarum (Legendary vehicle)
  • Jeweled Projection (Legendary Ghost projection)

Petra

Petra is the most important vendor and NPC in Forsaken, providing you with bounties in the Dreaming City. She continues to move around the area and this week can be found back in The Strand. She has multiple bounties offering Powerful gear, as well as Gateway Between Worlds, which rewards you with an Offering to the Oracle (which is now an easy ticket to a Seed of Light and third subclass tree).

Additionally, she's again offering a bounty to do the mission Broken Courier; this marks the first reset of the rotation of Dreaming City missions she has. If your Power level wasn't high enough to try this out in September, here's your opportunity to do what you missed. Petra actually has some dialogue to acknowledge that things are back to the way they were three weeks ago.

Clan Bounties

At the Tower, head over to Hawthorne to grab your daily and weekly clan bounties. On the weekly side, this week has you doing the following with clanmates: complete Blind Well at Tier 3 or higher; clear three waves of Escalation Protocol; and do three Heroic Adventures. As per usual, completing enough clan bounties before the weekly reset will net you some Powerful gear, as will completing the standard weekly clan objectives. The weekly Raid challenge has you complete the Which Witch challenge for Powerful gear.

Vanguard Strikes

For standard Strikes, the weekly challenge is to complete three while using the same Light element as a team member. The modifiers for Strikes have rotated, and here's what you can expect to encounter right now:

  • Arc Singe -- Arc damage increased
  • Grounded -- Damage taken while airborne increased
  • Grenadier -- Grenades deal more damage and recharge faster

Daily Heroic Story Missions

Five story missions have been swapped in for you to tackle as part of the daily Heroic story missions activity. Complete your choice of three before the next weekly reset to net a piece of Powerful gear. The modifiers are the same as Strikes, as outlined above. Here are the mission options:

  • Fury -- 280 Power level
  • Chosen -- 280 Power level
  • The Gateway -- 310 Power level
  • Last Call -- 500 Power level
  • High Plains Blues -- 500 Power level

Gambit

Gambit was already one of Forsaken's best additions, and it took on greater importance last week as it became a mandatory step in the questline to obtain the Exotic hand cannon Malfeasance. You'll sometimes encounter a special boss in place of the Primeval; defeat that to get an item called Seething Heart that will set you on the difficult path toward unlocking the gun.

For this week, The Drifter is offering a weekly bounty, On the Grind, that asks you to earn points in Gambit. Points are earned by defeating enemies and guardians, and by banking Motes. The reward is a piece of Powerful gear.

Flashpoint

The Flashpoint is not tied directly to the weekly reset, but it has nonetheless been shuffled. At the time of this writing, it can be found on Mercury. Complete Public Events, Lost Sectors, and Heroic Adventures in the zone to fill a meter and earn a piece of Powerful gear.

Where Is Xur?

Xur will arrive once again on Friday, October 5, at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET / 6 PM BST. There's been no word about changes to him, so you can expect the usual Fated Engram (guaranteeing a Year One Exotic you don't own) along with one Exotic weapon and one piece of armor for each class.

Where Is Xur Today? Destiny 2 Xur Location And Exotic Items Guide (Oct. 5-8)

By Chris Pereira on Oct 05, 2018 11:21 pm

With a number of Destiny 2 updates on the way, the one thing you can count on is an appearance from the mysterious merchant Xur. He's back once again to peddle his wares, which include the usual assortment of Exotic gear. Here's what he's selling this weekend, as well as where to find him.

This week, Xur continues his pattern of appearing in his same old locations. You'll find him right now on Io, in the Giant's Scar region. Spawn in at the landing zone, hop on your Sparrow, and make your way forward through an overpass. Head left in the wide-open area with the large drill and then jump up the small hill on the left of this area. You'll find Xur hiding out in a cave, as you can see in the map below.

On the item side, he has a standard assortment of gear: one Exotic weapon and one Exotic piece of armor for each class, as well as the expensive Fated Engram (which guarantees you a Year One Exotic you don't already own). The weapon is Skyburner's Oath, a scout rifle that fires explosive slugs. There have been complaints about scout rifle damage in PvE, but that's set to change with an update this month.

For armor, Hunters get the Young Ahamkara's Spine gauntlets, which improve Tripmines when you deal damage with abilities. Warlocks get the Skull of Dire Ahamkara helmet, which gives you Super energy when you get kills with Nova Bomb. And Titans get the Helm of Saint-14 helmet, which causes Ward of Dawn to blind enemies and grant an overshield to friendlies. The full lineup and prices follow below.

  • Skyburner's Oath (Exotic scout rifle) -- 29 Legendary Shards
  • Young Ahamkara's Grasp (Exotic Hunter gauntlets) -- 23 Legendary Shards
  • Skull of Dire Ahamkara (Exotic Warlock helmet) -- 23 Legendary Shards
  • Helm of Saint-14 (Exotic Titan helmet) -- 23 Legendary Shards

You'll be able to pick up these items between now and the weekly reset on Tuesday, October 9. One week later, Festival of the Lost will debut alongside a new patch, version 2.0.4.

DC Universe Original Show Schedule: Titans, Young Justice, And More

By Meg Downey on Oct 05, 2018 11:00 pm

After months of casting announcements, we've finally been given an idea of just when the DC Universe original shows will be landing on the service. At New York Comic Con, the team behind the three-week-old platform gave a presentation that included a helpful infographic laying out their tentative premier schedule into 2020.

The name of the game, according to DC co-publisher Jim Lee, is to have new original content available every week on the service for a full calendar year. Each show, with the exception of Young Justice Season 3, will be released on a one-episode-per-week basis. Young Justice will have a split season, bracketing Doom Patrol, will debut at a whirlwind three-episodes-per-week rate with a mid-season hiatus.

No Caption Provided

Titans, which had its official premier at the convention on Wednesday, is launching for DC Universe subscribers on Friday, October 12. The twelve episode season will take the platform's weekly schedule into 2019 before Young Justice kicks off, tentatively, in January.

The panel also announced a DC Universe exclusive digital prequel comic to Young Justice Season 3 that will be written by producer Greg Weisman and artist Christopher Jones, set for release in 2019 near the premier of the first episode.

Fans at the Titans world premiere were treated to a brief clip of Doom Patrol, which has begun filming in preparation for its early 2019 release, showcasing the team sitting around a surreal dinner table, and a surprise appearance by Brendan Fraser who will be voicing Robotman in the show. Fraser announced that Matthew Bomer had joined the cast as Negative Man, an ex-test pilot who suffered a horrific accident that left him permanently imbued with radioactive "negative" energy. Negative Man's condition means he has to be covered head-to-toe in bandages, which Jim Lee laughed was ironic for Bomer who is "maybe the most handsome man on earth."

In addition to Fraser and Bomer, Doom Patrol will feature Dianne Guerrero as Crazy Jane, Joivan Wade as Cyborg, Timothy Dalton as The Chief, and April Bowlby as Elasti-Girl.

Doom Patrol will be followed by the James Wan-produced Swamp Thing which has been slowly adding to its cast with the recent addition of Crystal Reed (Teen Wolf) as Abby Arcane. It's currently unknown as to whether or not Swamp Thing will follow in the same shared-universe mold as Titans and Doom Patrol, or if any of the shows will continue to interact with one another once they have official spun-off.

DC Universe's years' worth of original content officially kicks off October 12 on the DC Universe app. Fans outside the US will be able to watch Titans on Netflix.

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider Gets New Challenge Tomb DLC In November

By Tony Wilson on Oct 05, 2018 10:45 pm

Earlier this year, publisher Square Enix announced a DLC roadmap for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which included seven monthly DLC packs, each bringing a new Challenge Tomb, weapon, outfit, skill, and side mission to the game. The first of these, The Forge, will release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 13. It's included as part of the game's season pass (priced at $30), but you can also purchase it separately for $5.

The Forge is a lava-filled Challenge Tomb that tasks you with climbing a rotating tower. In our time playing through the tomb, we came across plenty of pitfalls and explosive gas vents that sent us to an early grave on a few occasions. Using the same gas vents to propel ourselves around on swinging pendulums was a clever twist on the obstacle. Reaching the end granted us a Grenadier skill, used for crafting grenades.

We played through The Forge cooperatively, and in fact five of the seven DLC Challenge Tombs will be playable in co-op. When playing in co-op, both players see themselves as Lara Croft and the second player as a side character. In this case, the second character was Kuwaq Yaku villager Abby. Each DLC ties its challenge tombs in with a side mission and character, lending the puzzle-solving experience a narrative hook.

Each tomb can also be revisited in Time Attack and Score Attack modes. The former records your best times completing the tomb, while the latter sees you collecting wisps of light and shooting glowing lanterns to increase your score. These modes will also be made available for the game's existing tombs.

Starting in November, each of the seven Challenge Tombs will release monthly. All are included in the season pass, and six will be available to purchase individually. The final tomb, and the only one requiring you to have finished the game's main story, will be made available to season pass holders only.

Two Big Destiny 2 Updates Coming This Month Alongside Festival Of The Lost

By Chris Pereira on Oct 05, 2018 10:36 pm

A number of changes--along with a seasonal event--are on the way to Destiny 2 in the coming weeks. Bungie has announced preliminary details about two updates that are set to launch before the end of October, as well as the start date for Festival of the Lost.

The annual Halloween event starts on October 16. We don't know much about what to expect from this Festival of the Lost--more details will be shared next week--but Bungie says there is a "new challenge to tackle." The only specific it offered was this: "It includes a costume party, and you're all invited. It ends with a quest to solve a murder."

No Caption Provided

Also set to arrive on October 16 is update 2.0.4. This will bring with it a number of welcome changes. Once you've completed a Lost Sector, you'll be able to hover over it on the map to see its name (which can be hard to keep track of but is important to know for certain activities). Edge Transit, the Legendary grenade launcher that drops all too often in Forsaken, will become less common, as three other weapons will join what Bungie calls the world Legendary pool: Through Fire and Flood, Zenobia D, and Crooked Fang-4fr.

Scout Rifles, which have been dealing lower-than-expected damage, will get a damage boost in both PvE and Gambit (but only against AI enemies). Additionally, transmat effects will be added to the Flair area of the Collection. This will allow you to pay to retrieve any you've unlocked, with tracking of these having begun when Forsaken launched on September 4. However, only those you actually have had in your inventory will be unlocked--obtaining a ship equipped with a new transmat effect will not add that effect to your collection.

Coming later in the month, on October 30, is update 2.0.5. This is tentatively set to make some of the changes that have been mentioned previously. It will nerf Sleeper Simultant in Gambit, as it will receive only two ammo from Power ammo packs, rather than four. Masterwork Cores will be obtainable in new ways, as they'll be offered as rewards for some of Spider's Wanted bounties, as well as Scrapper bounties. And Exotic duplicates will be less common (but still possible), while the ever-elusive Forsaken Exotics will be more likely to drop.

The full early patch notes Bungie shared follow below. The company notes things could still change between now and release. Also of note: While not listed below, Bungie is adjusting how likely you are to bump into Gambit's special Primeval that is needed to kick off the Malfeasance quest, but the other rewards it can drop will become rarer to compensate.

Update 2.0.4 (October 16) Preliminary Patch Notes

  • Added the ability to hover over Lost Sectors to see their name once a player has looted them
  • Players can now track up to three pursuits
  • Added Through Fire and Flood, Zenobia D, and Crooked Fang-4fr to the world Legendary pool--Edge Transit will have some company
  • Increasing Scout Rifle damage in PvE and against non-player enemies in Gambit
  • Fixed a bug where Prime Engrams were going straight to the Postmaster at the end of Crucible matches; they will now show alongside other end-of-match rewards
  • Added transmat effects to Collections, under the Flair category
  • Tracking for acquired transmat effects began with the launch of Forsaken on September 4; transmat effects gained (inventory or Postmaster), used, or dismantled after that date will be unlocked in Collections
  • Transmat effects are unlocked when added to player inventory, NOT when you gain ships that have them pre-socketed
  • We have identified a very rare issue where the Gambit invasion portal will not reactivate once used, and we are currently developing a fix
  • We are developing a fix for an issue where One Thousand Voices may cause loud screeching audio when fired while strafing or jumping

Update 2.0.5 (October 30) Preliminary Patch Notes

  • Rebalancing functionality of Distribution/Dynamo perks, requiring players to be near opponents for Super energy benefits
  • Slightly increasing Sword damage in PvE to address player feedback
  • Slightly increasing Fusion Rifle damage in PvE
  • Increasing viability of Malfeasance in PvE and Gambit activities
  • Adjusting visibility of the Titan's Banner Shield, making it easier for players to see through the effects
  • Adjusting Exotic rewards to help reduce the number of duplicate drops
  • Players may still receive duplicates, but there will be better chances for Forsaken exotics when receiving Exotic rewards
  • The chance for a Nightfall Unique Reward to drop will increase each time a Nightfall is completed without a unique drop
  • Adding Masterwork Cores as rewards for specific Spider "Wanted" bounties and general Scrapper bounties
  • Reducing the time for single-shader deletion from your inventory
  • We are developing a fix for an issues where a team will defeat the Ascendant Primeval Servitor, but the opposing team receives credit for the kill

Why Fortnite's Popular Bouncer Item Was Removed

By Kevin Knezevic on Oct 05, 2018 10:23 pm

Epic has been introducing new items and weapons to Fortnite on a nearly weekly basis since the title's become a global hit, but to keep the item pool balanced, the developer also periodically moves some into the "vault," effectively removing them from the game. At the start of Season 6 last week, the studio vaulted an inordinately high number of items, and now we know why one of them was removed.

On Twitter (via Fortnite Intel), Epic Games Community Coordinator Sean Hamilton explained why the Bouncer was among the items removed from Fortnite last week. "[W]e removed Bouncers due to the influx of recent mobility items as well as more that we have planned for the future," Hamilton wrote.

Hamilton also reiterated that vaulting items doesn't necessarily remove them from the game permanently; some previously vaulted weapons have since been reintroduced to Fortnite after being reworked, leaving open the possibility that the Bouncer--or any of the other four weapons Epic recently removed--could come back down the line.

It remains to be seen what other kinds of mobility items Epic has in the works for Fortnite, but the studio rolled out a new type of trap with this week's 6.01 update: the Chiller. When the trap is triggered by another player, their feet will freeze together and cause them to slide around.

Season 6 of Fortnite kicked off on September 27, and since them, some unusual things have been happening in the game. Most notably, the floating island that rose from Loot Lake began moving around the island, leaving glowing craters in its wake.

The Walking Dead Boss Talks Season 9's Massive Tonal Change And The End Of Rick Grimes

By Chris E. Hayner on Oct 05, 2018 10:22 pm

As The Walking Dead prepares to unveil its ninth season, there is perhaps more buzz than ever about AMC's long-running zombie apocalypse series. Unlike in the past, though, the buzz isn't about what's playing out on the screen. Instead, it's the behind-the-scenes departure of star Andrew Lincoln, which the actor officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con, that is on fans' minds.

During a visit to the Atlanta set of The Walking Dead, the absence of Lincoln loomed large. It's the first time since the series premiered in 2010 that he's not number one on the call sheet. However, his departure offers something of a chance for a rebirth for the series--and it's a rebirth that new showrunner Angela Kang is taking very seriously.

Following the "All Out War" story that unfolded in Season 8, The Walking Dead is facing a short jump forward in time--which the comics also featured after the defeat of Negan--and the creative team behind the show is using that to attempt to take the show back to its Season 1 roots. What, exactly, does that mean? While speaking with GameSpot and a small group of press, Kang likened it to the tone of the comic after its time jump.

"The comic book, for the people who know the comic, there is this time jump," she said. "And so it kind of takes the show in the books into this sort of interesting, almost western slash agrarian vibe. And so that was something that I really wanted to capture for the show. I also just was such a fan of the pilot, and so I wanted to kind of try to aspire to recapture some of that feeling. Of the silences and just those beautiful wide landscapes and just the loneliness that can be in the world."

No Caption Provided

At the same time, Kang realizes the importance of the dynamics between the show's characters. After so many battles against other communities, zombies themselves, and sometimes each other, these characters have begun creating their own world. "We're in a part where we really see that the characters have found this group and they're very tight with each other," she explained. "And so you get to feel the warmth between them while there's also conflict."

And that conflict will bring these characters fans have grown to love into direct opposition with another new threat--the Whisperers. The group, first introduced in the comics, wear zombie skin and speak in whispers, in an attempt to blend in with the walkers. They'll be introduced later in the season, at which point GameSpot will have plenty more to tell you about them.

In the meantime, fans should hopefully be prepared for something of a simpler The Walking Dead, as everyone--including Rick, for now--makes what they can of life after Negan. Of course, this is The Walking Dead, so there will still be plenty of drama--some of it concerning Negan's former group, the Saviors.

As for Lincoln's Rick Grimes, fans don't know at what point in this season his story will come to an end. For Kang, though, she knows she and her team have a tall order figuring out the conclusion of the show's leading man since day one.

No Caption Provided

"I think the big story responsibility that I and the writers felt was how do we write a worthy exit for this person who just as a character has been so fun and compelling to watch as well as write for and brought us into the story?" she said. "And we are also personally fond of Andrew Lincoln, he's such a rare and amazing human being. So we love working with him and we wanted to give him something that is fun that hopefully, the fans will love as much as he seems to and that we're hoping is a good story."

The loss of Lincoln won't diminish the show, though, Kang claims. "We have this great ensemble," she said. "And it has been an ensemble show from the start, even though he's sort of been a character that helped us frame some of the moral questions through the series. But it's been an exciting opportunity to build up some of those characters and delve into some of those relationships we've been following for a long time. As well as introduce new characters and see people that we've seen for many years change. So I think that's really been the approach is to on the one hand tell a great story for Rick, but also not at the expense of all the other characters who are gonna carry on after Rick."

The Walking Dead Season 9 premieres Sunday, October 7, on AMC.

Fortnite Season 6's New Item, Shadow Stones, Are Finally Back Again

By Kevin Knezevic on Oct 05, 2018 10:20 pm

One of the major new items Epic Games introduced to Fortnite at the start of Season 6 was Shadow Stones, but they've been beset by problems since arriving. Shortly after the stones went live, the developer had to pull them from the game several times, but it appears those issues have finally been resolved, and Shadow Stones are now back in the game.

The problems first began soon after Season 6 kicked off last week. Epic announced that it had to temporarily disable the Shadow Stones due to a bug. It didn't elaborate on what that issue was, but players had discovered an exploit that allowed them to shoot their weapons while being invisible, which wouldn't normally be possible when the stones were used.

The Shadow Stones were then briefly re-enabled over the weekend, only to quickly be removed again for an unspecified reason. They would remain disabled for several days--an unusually long time, as Epic is typically able to resolve issues that arise with items fairly quickly, although shopping carts were similarly plagued by problems when they were first introduced to the game.

On top of the newly reenabled Shadow Stones, Epic has added a new type of trap item to Fortnite: the Chiller. The trap was introduced as part of the game's 6.01 patch; it freezes an opponent's feet and causes them to slide around when triggered.

Season 6 is underway on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch, and mobile, and it's brought a slew of new cosmetic items and other rewards to unlock with the Season 6 Battle Pass, including Pets. You can see all of the new skins and cosmetics in our Season 6 rewards gallery. If you need help unlocking them, you can find tips and guides on how to complete the latest challenges in our Season 6 challenge roundup.

Pokemon Go Psychic Event Starts Soon, Adds New Shiny Pokemon

By Kevin Knezevic on Oct 05, 2018 10:15 pm

Niantic is kicking off a new event for Pokemon Go very soon. With Mewtwo now available in Raid Battles, the developer is giving players the chance to capture even more Psychic Pokemon with the Psychic Spectacular event, which begins today, October 5, at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET and runs until the same time on October 14.

During the Psychic Spectacular event, Psychic-type Pokemon such as Abra, Ralts, Baltoy, Slowpoke, and others will appear in the wild much more frequently than they normally do. Additionally, Niantic is rolling out more Field Research tasks revolving around Psychic Pokemon; completing these will help bring you closer to achieving a Research Breakthrough and crossing paths with Suicune.

No Caption Provided

On top of that, players will have a chance of finding Shiny Drowzee during the event. This marks the first time that Shiny versions of Drowzee have been available in Pokemon Go, so you won't want to miss your chance to capture one. In contrast to standard Drowzee and Hypno, which have yellow fur, their Shiny variants are pink.

As previously mentioned, Mewtwo is now appearing in standard Raid Battles after previously being restricted to the invite-only EX Raids. The Legendary Psychic-type will be available as a Raid Boss until October 23. Meanwhile, the Mythical Pokemon Deoxys has now begun appearing in EX Raids, although you'll need to receive an invitation in order to participate in one of those battles.

Pokemon Go players will be able to get their hands on another rare Psychic Pokemon a little later this month. October's Community Day is set to take place on Sunday, October 21, and it will feature the Steel/Psychic Pokemon Beldum. Niantic has yet to reveal what special attack it will be able to learn during the event, but dataminers have previously discovered the move Meteor Mash--Metagross's signature attack--within the game's code.

Like Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 Will Be Distributed By Warner Bros. In North America

By Kevin Knezevic on Oct 05, 2018 10:10 pm

Cyberpunk 2077 may still be a ways off from release, but now we know who is helping distribute the game in part of the world. Developer CD Projekt Red announced it is once again partnering with Warner Bros. Interactive, the same company that helped release its highly acclaimed RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, to distribute Cyberpunk 2077 in North America.

"We've worked with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and both releases turned out to be really successful, so we're entering this new stage of our cooperation with great confidence," said CD Projekt Red SVP of business development Michał Nowakowski.

It's still unclear which company will distribute Cyberpunk 2077 in other regions. CD Projekt Red previously partnered with Bandai Namco to release The Witcher 3 in Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Europe, but the company hasn't yet announced if it'll renew this partnership for its upcoming title.

Likewise, CD Projekt Red still hasn't announced a release date for Cyberpunk 2077, but the studio confirmed the game is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC. While we may not yet know when Cyberpunk 2077 will launch, a number of retailers have already begun taking pre-orders for it. You can read more in our Cyberpunk 2077 pre-order guide.

Cyberpunk 2077 places players in the role of V, a mercenary who can be augmented with all manner of cybernetic enhancements. The game is set in the futuristic dystopian metropolis Night City, and unlike the Witcher titles, it is played in first-person--although that new viewpoint isn't meant for VR. CD Projekt Red gave fans their first look at the game back in August when it shared nearly an hour of Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay.

New Aquaman NYCC Trailer Has The Hero's Classic Costume And Explosive Action

By Jordan Ramée on Oct 05, 2018 10:06 pm

Warner Bros. Pictures has revealed the new trailer for Aquaman at New York Comic-Con. Although the trailer contains several scenes we've seen already, it expands on most of them and details more of the upcoming movie's explosive action and goofy humor.

The first half of the trailer focuses on Arthur's origins as someone who's half-human and half-Atlantean, before closing on an amusing scene where Arthur and Mera are searching for the Trident of Atlantis. However, the big reveals are in the latter half of the trailer. First, starting at 3:20, we get our first good look at Black Manta. Even if Aquaman is setting up Orn, aka Ocean Master, to be the big bad in this movie, it's Black Manta who's commonly associated as the archenemy of Arthur Curry.

In the comics, Black Manta, who's real name is David Kane, has a vendetta against Aquaman after the undersea hero kills Kane's father. Kane would go on to have a half-Atlantean son who would grow up to be Aquaman's sidekick. Even if Black Manta plays a minor role in Aquaman, his presence hints at several future stories we can look forward to.

The other big reveal is right at the end of the trailer. In the final shot, we get a good look of Arthur suiting up in the gold and green uniform that the character wears in the comics, as well as several of the animated series and movies. He's also holding the Trident of Atlantis, completing his look as the Aquaman. Aquaman arrives in theaters on December 21.

Harry Potter Open-World Game Reportedly Leaked

By Kevin Knezevic on Oct 05, 2018 10:00 pm

With the exception of the recent Harry Potter mobile game (and Niantic's upcoming AR game), it's been several years since Warner Bros. Interactive has released a new video game adaptation of JK Rowling's popular series. However, it appears the publisher has an unannounced Harry Potter game in the works, and we may have gotten our first glimpse at it.

Reddit user VapeThisBro shared a video of the alleged new Harry Potter game online, which shows off character creation, spell casting, and open-world environments set in and around familiar Harry Potter locations. The video has since been removed from YouTube by Warner Bros., but mirrored versions of it are still available to watch, and while the quality of the video is poor, it still certainly looks intriguing.

Along with the video, VapeThisBro shared a synopsis of the alleged game, which suggests players will assume the role of a fifth year student. Shortly after arriving at Hogwarts, strange events begin to unfold in the Forbidden Woods, and players embark with a professor named "Elezar Fig" to investigate. The game also allegedly allows players to freely explore the world and decide whether to pursue a path of good or evil.

Eurogamer reports that the footage is indeed taken from an in-the-works Harry Potter game, and that the title is being developed by Avalanche Software, the studio best known for its work on Disney's 2013 toys-to-life title, Disney Infinity. Following Infinity's cancellation in 2016, Avalanche was briefly shuttered alongside all of Disney Interactive's other subsidiaries until Warner Bros. Interactive acquired the studio in early 2017.

Warner Bros. has yet to officially comment on the alleged leak, but the fact the studio is removing footage of it from YouTube suggests it's legitimate.

The most recent Harry Potter game, Hogwarts Mystery, is available now on iOS and Android. The title is a free-to-play RPG set before the novels, although it has been criticized for its exploitative implementation of microtransactions. Niantic's aforementioned Harry Potter game, Wizards Unite, is still slated to launch in 2018 and will offer similar AR gameplay as Pokemon Go.

Destiny 2 Offers Spider Bounty Repeat, With A Twist -- Wanted: Gravetide Summoner (Week 5 Variant)

By Chris Pereira on Oct 05, 2018 09:47 pm

Refreshed activities and Powerful rewards have arrived in Destiny 2 following the latest weekly reset. By now, Forsaken owners know that includes a variety of bounties from Spider, one of which is more expensive and more difficult than the rest, but with the promise of Powerful gear at the end. Curiously, the name of this target is the same as last week, but that doesn't mean you'll be doing precisely the same thing. Here's what to know about Wanted: Gravetide Summoner.

Heading to Spider reveals his new bounty is the same as the previous one, but if you're paying close attention, you'll notice there is a difference. While the target is the same, and you're still headed to Titan, the Adventure is now located near the Siren's Watch landing zone, rather than The Rig.

What this means is you're entering a different Lost Sector to find Gravetide Summoner, a wizard enemy. The overarching mechanics are the same--you'll deal with an ogre before getting to Gravetide Summoner, and you'll need to kill special thrall enemies to receive a buff that allows you to damage the ogre. Defeat all the enemies and you'll complete the bounty.

Don't expect anything significant from the chest at the end--that doesn't tend to reward you with anything special. But cashing in the bounty from Spider will net you a piece of Powerful gear, making this an activity well worth doing.

If you're a bit underleveled, we have a useful video guide above. We managed to beat this with a character with a Power level of only 520; you'll make things easier by utilizing a high-crit Super and having an arc weapon handy to deal with the second phase, when knights spawn in.

Destiny 2's Simulant Sleeper Nerf For Gambit Revealed

By Chris Pereira on Oct 05, 2018 09:44 pm

Destiny 2: Forsaken's new Gambit mode has been a very welcome addition to the game, but ask many players what they would change about it, and you're likely to hear the name Sleeper Simulant. The Exotic weapon has been the go-to choice for countless players since day one, and complaints about it convinced Bungie that it needs to change.

In its latest weekly blog post, Bungie outlined a change to Sleeper Simulant. Alongside tweaks to how it deals with players who quit or disconnect during Gambit, picking up Power ammo in the mode will now net you fewer shots with Sleeper. Rather than the four you got previously--easily enough to invade the opposing team's side and wipe it out completely--you'll now only get two. (All Swords, meanwhile, get a buff, receiving 12 ammo instead of six.)

This change to Sleeper doesn't directly impact its effectiveness, but it does limit the total damage that can be inflicted with it. That falls in line with what Bungie said it hoped to do when it first announced that changes were coming. "We're aware of reports that Sleeper Simulant feels too strong in Gambit," Bungie said last month. "The Sandbox team is looking at potential changes to address this. Our goal is to retain the strength of the weapon, but tune it so it doesn't feel to be the only viable power weapon in Gambit. Stay tuned."

Bungie plans to roll this out as part of update 2.0.5. That's scheduled for release on October 30, but the developer warns that plans could still change.

Sleeper Simulant is not actually a new gun to Forsaken; it was a part of Destiny 2's second DLC, Warmind, as the reward for an extended questline. It's always been good--and fun--but with the significance of player kills in Gambit being so great, it's become a huge part of the mode.

Whether this truly changes things remains to be seen; it's possible another linear fusion rifle will take its place. This won't be the last balance change the game sees, and a variety of other tweaks are on the way, as well as the launch of Festival of the Lost on October 16.

Get Your Fortnite Dances Ready For The Next Limited-Time Mode

By Steve Watts on Oct 05, 2018 09:18 pm

Fortnite: Battle Royale has another limited-time mode incoming, and this one just wants you to shut up and dance. Disco Domination takes one of the game's most enduring and meme-worthy features and builds a whole toe-tapping game mode around it, having you defend your fellow party-goers as they dance the night away.

An in-game tease gave the name of the upcoming mode and says players will capture and defend dance floors using emotes to score points. An image shows a wild dance party around a disco ball; similar dance floors were previously found in-game as part of a challenge, so this may work similarly. In the meantime, you can continue checking out the current limited-time mode, Soaring 50s, which was briefly disabled after the rollout of the new 6.01 update.

No Caption Provided

Fortnite recently rolled over into Season 6, with the theme "Darkness Rises." The first teaser for Season 6 may have hinted at this new game mode, with a robot llama and the caption "All great parties need a DJ." The robo-llama ended up being the DJ Yonder skin, one of the slew of new cosmetic skins you can earn this season. The update is also spooky-themed for Halloween, including elements like a Haunted Castle and cornfields.

The update also added Pets and Shadow Stones, and the newly floating island propelled by Kevin the Cube appears to be laying some preliminary groundwork for the next big world event. The most significant change this season came from outside the game, though, as Sony finally allowed cross-play on PS4.

There May Be More Halloween Sequels After All

By Jeremy Winslow on Oct 05, 2018 09:10 pm

With Halloween almost upon us, it's time for pumpkin-spiced everything and scary movies. And with Halloween, directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, The Sitter), hitting theatres on October 19, there's an opportunity to get some big screen scares too. But if Green's Halloween turns out to be a smashing success, Michael Myers could return for more outings.

According to Entertainment Weekly, producer Jason Blum (Get Out, Blackkklansman)--the founder of Blumhouse Productions--told the publication he expects this new Halloween reboot can be franchised. "Yeah, for sure, for sure, 100 percent," Blum said when asked if he hopes to make more films in the Halloween universe. "Let me tell you, if we got six movies out of [Paranormal Activity]--they found new footage five times in a row!--I feel like we can figure out the next chapter. But we'll see."

Green's Halloween was first announced back in May 2016 by series creator John Carpenter, the director of the first entry in the slasher franchise in 1978. "Halloween needs to return to its traditions," Carpenter said in a statement. About a year later, Carpenter announced the talent that'll make the project "the scariest of them all." He recruited David Gordon Green to direct, and Danny McBride (The Disaster Artist, Alien: Covenant) and Jeff Fradley (Your Highness, Vice Principals) to write.

In April 2018, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who reprises her role from as Laurie Strode, began talking about the plot of the Halloween reboot. "There was the idea of, 'What do you call it?'' If I had had my druthers, I probably would've called it Halloween Retold. Because it's being retold," she said. "It's the original story in many, many, many ways. Just retold 40 years later with my granddaughter." She continued, saying that some of the footage she saw terrified her. "They went full-tilt boogeyman. And I've never said that in my life, and I will say full-tilt boogeyman for the rest of the year as I go around talking about this."

In our review, we said that even though Halloween doesn't reinvent the horror genre or establish in new subgenres within the category, "What it does is take the best parts of all the films in the franchise, and deliver the ultimate companion piece to Carpenter's 1978 masterpiece."

Halloween is due out in theatres on October 19, 2018.

Fortnite Challenges For Week 2: Visit Corrupted Areas, Use Shadow Stones, And More (Season 6)

By Kevin Knezevic on Oct 05, 2018 09:06 pm

Week 2 of Fortnite Season 6 has arrived, which means there's a new set of challenges for players to undertake on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile--albeit a batch that isn't especially exciting. As has been the case recently, the new challenges are divided up into two categories: those available to everyone, and those reserved for players who've purchased a Season 6 Battle Pass. Either way, completing them will earn you XP and help you to unlock some of the new Season 6 rewards.

The challenge that requires the most legwork this week is to visit all of the Corrupted Areas, which began cropping up around the map after the locations were visited by the mysterious purple cube toward the end of Season 5. There are seven of these Corrupted Areas scattered around the island, and completing the challenge is simply a matter of heading to all of them over the course of several matches. You can see where all of them our in our dedicated Corrupted Areas challenge guide.

Beyond that, the rest of Week 2's challenges are fairly straightforward. One has you use a Shadow Stone in three different matches, which can be accomplished easily enough as you're traveling to different Corrupted Areas, as that is where the stones most readily appear. Most of the other challenges involve either eliminating or dealing damage to other players using a particular weapon. You can the full list of Week 2's challenges--and the rewards they bestow--below.

If you've already finished all of last week's challenges and complete this latest set, you'll also complete the Week 2 Hunting Party challenge. The reward for this is a special loading screen pointing to a free item hidden somewhere around the map. Rather than the usual Battle Star, however, the item this time is a free banner. If you need help finding it, be sure to check out our Week 2 Hunting Party challenge guide.

Season 6 of Fortnite kicked off last week, on September 27, and it's introduced a ton of new cosmetic items and other rewards to get your hands on, including adorable Pets that you can carry around on your back. You can see all of them in our Season 6 rewards gallery. These are unlocked as you complete challenges and level your Battle Pass up. If you need pointers, you can find tips for all of the challenges available thus far in our Season 6 challenge roundup.

Fortnite Update 6.01 Patch Notes: New Chiller Trap, Custom Playground Options, And Bug Fixes

By Tamoor Hussain on Oct 05, 2018 09:01 pm

Epic Games has released update 6.01 for Fortnite and, alongside it, the full patch notes detailing everything new and everything that has been changed. While not as significant as the last patch, which kicked off Season 6, this content update does add in a new item for Battle Royale called the Chiller.

"Don't get cold feet! Freeze your foes and slide around for a quick getaway," reads the official description. The Chiller is a large trap that encases an enemy player's feet in ice on contact, causing them to slide around. Check out the video below to see it in action--maybe it'll come in handy while doing this week's challenges.

[Update: Shortly after the update went live, Epic reported it was aware of and working on partying issues. It's now taken a step toward fixing it by disabling Goalbound skins temporarily. As of October 5, it's resolved the problem and you should be able to use the outfits once again.]

Epic also resolved an issue that caused the Soaring 50s limited-time mode to be temporarily unavailable. It's set to be replaced by another new mode soon that centers around dancing, but we don't yet have an exact launch time for that as of yet. There's also no word on the Halloween skins that leaked.

The other big addition in this update is custom Playground options which allow you to tweak settings such as health, time of day, gravity, and more. Take a look at the full patch notes below, which details the new additions, as well as the other tweaks to gameplay and performance. You can also see how the patch changes Fortnite's Save The World mode here--the major addition is that of a new weapon.

Limited Time Mode: Playground

Playground Custom Options

  • Added more options to Playground. Allowing you to change settings such as starting health, time of day, gravity, and more!

Weapons + Items

  • Chiller added.
    • Common Trap.
    • Can be placed on floors, walls, or ceilings.
    • Drops in stacks of 3 in Treasure Chests, Supply Drops, Vending Machines, Supply Llamas, and floor loot.
    • Applies icy feet to friends or foes, causing them to slide around with low friction.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue that could cause vehicles to become uncontrollable.

Gameplay

  • Made improvements to the motion controls for the Switch to make it feel more accurate and responsive.

Bug Fixes

  • Pets are now hidden along with your character when the camera is too close to you.
  • Toys now respect the streamer mode setting for player names in minigame messages.
  • Slightly increased the hitbox size on the Fancy Tomato to match its visual size.

Audio

  • The following adjustments have been made to Glider audio tells:
    • Muffled the audio if there isn't a clear line of sight between you other gliding players.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where incorrect audio would play when a teammate was eliminated.

UI

Bug Fixes

  • Added star ratings to the UI elements of all trap items.

Mobile

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where players occasionally couldn't interact with items.

Fortnite Season 6 began on September 27 and, at the same time, the floating island that rose from Loot Lake began moving around the map. It is leaving strange craters in its wake and, as of yet, we're not sure what this means, though fans are speculating it could be building up to a new event. Epic also added new cosmetics to unlock, which you can see in our Fortnite Season 6 Battle Pass rewards gallery. You can also find tips for all the latest challenges in our Season 6 challenge roundup.

Venom Movie Review: Not Quite Symbiotic

By Michael Rougeau on Oct 05, 2018 08:54 pm

Making a Venom movie without Spider-Man is a unique challenge. But many of Venom's issues have nothing to do with Spidey's absence.

For example: Early in Venom, the Symbiote that will later be revealed as Riot escapes the Life Foundation's custody and infects a woman in a marketplace in Malaysia, with the explicit goal of reaching San Francisco. The movie's main story then begins: Eddie Brock makes some poor decisions, loses his job and his fiancé (Michelle Williams' Anne Weying), and hits rock bottom. Cue a six month time jump--and our friend Riot, still inhabiting the old woman from the marketplace, has finally made it--to the airport?

What was Riot doing for the six months between then and now? Did it go on a killing spree across Malaysia? Was it dormant or hibernating--something the movie never gives any hint that Symbiotes might be capable of? Was it biding its time pretending to be someone's grandma? That blatant plot hole has nothing to do with Venom's general 1990s cheesiness as a character, or the considerable challenge of trying to make a Venom movie without a single reference to Spider-Man. It's just good, old fashioned, avoidable sloppiness.

Don't get me wrong: The lack of Spider-Man does cause problems. Specifically, the entire premise--that Venom chooses to stick around on Earth, attach itself permanently to Eddie Brock, and betray its entire species--doesn't really work in this movie. In the books, Venom's obsession with Spider-Man gives it common purpose with Eddie, and cutting Spidey out of the equation necessitates something take his place as their end goal. The movie tries to get around that by clumsily painting Eddie and Venom as Breakfast Club style lovable "losers" (actual, direct quote: "On my planet, I am kind of a loser, like you"). It's nonsensical, implausible, under-explained, and tonally weird; that line is easily the movie's biggest laugh, but not in a good way.

Venom is surprisingly funny, mostly in the verbal abuse the Symbiote whispers directly into Eddie's brain, usually after Tom Hardy's character does something Venom considers cowardly or embarrassing. When Eddie holds his hands up in surrender to law enforcement, Venom laments that he's "making us look bad;" when Eddie opts to take the elevator rather than jumping from a skyscraper, Venom calls him a "pussy." These moments are deliberately played for laughs, and they land well enough. The bigger problem is why an alien parasite from space talks like a frat bro, or, extrapolating further, why it needs eyes and teeth if its main form is a shapeless, pulsing black goo. These essential curiosities of Venom as a character are never so much as acknowledged, much less explained.

On the plus side, Venom and the other Symbiotes look pretty good in this movie. The CG work is somewhat inconsistent, and it definitely goes through ups and downs when it comes to raw fidelity. But unlike in his other live action incarnations (looking at you, Spider-Man 3), Venom actually looks like Venom here. The alien comes off as both lithe and powerful; it leaps around gracefully, but its hulking form also exudes menace and strength. The visual effect of Venom's vicious visage wrapping itself over Eddie's head is creatively executed, and Symbiote-on-Symbiote fight scenes play out in unexpected ways, with human hosts and alien parasites struggling to remain linked while trying to rip and tear their opponents apart.

Hardy is as baffling in this role as the movie's trailers have suggested he'd be. As a New York transplant living in San Francisco, he's doing something like a caricature of an NYC cab driver's accent, mixed with frequent slurred mutterings--and that's before he encounters the Symbiote and his behavior becomes understandably erratic. Besides Hardy's strange performance, Brock himself is not a likeable or relatable character. He thoughtlessly uses his fiancé in a half-baked gotcha journalism scheme that gets them both fired, and it literally never occurs to him to so much as apologize to her, until Venom for some unknowable reason nudges him in the right direction later in the film. Brock lacks the depth of character to carry this movie, and Hardy lacks the charm to make up for the character's shallowness.

Michelle Williams does just fine as Anne, although her attachment to Eddie is really inexplicable, as the two have zero chemistry. Even weirder is the willingness of her new doctor boyfriend (Reid Scott) to administer Eddie multiple MRI screenings, even after Eddie interrupts their fancy lunch date by climbing into a lobster tank (the Symbiote affects him in some truly strange ways).

Riz Ahmed does a great job as the megalomaniacal head of the Life Foundation, totally selling his character's belief that humans will have to mutate themselves using alien parasites if we want to survive climate change. That said, it's a pretty thin motivation, and Dr. Carlton Drake is an utterly one note villain. To be honest, the only character who actually experiences any kind of growth or change is the scientist played by comedian and actress Jenny Slate, who is terrific in this movie--and, unfortunately, underused.

Venom has all the ingredients of a decent superhero movie--10 or 15 years ago. With spotty CGI, poorly drawn characters, tonal inconsistency including forced "edginess" and awkward humor, sidelined female characters, and even cringeworthy licensed musical cues, it feels like a relic from the distant, pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe past. That may in part be attributed to the fact that it's been in production in one form or another since at least 2008. But its problems go way past simply being "old school," and ultimately, Venom lacks the charm, clarity, and ambition superhero fans have come to expect.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Review Roundup: What Do The Critics Think?

By Steve Watts on Oct 05, 2018 08:52 pm

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is now available, bringing the blockbuster action series to ancient Greece. After Ubisoft saw diminishing returns from its annual sequels, the company took a year off to put more time into its next installment. The result was Assassin's Creed Origins, a well-received return to form that borrowed some heavy RPG elements like loot, and revised some of its staid mechanics.

Odyssey is the first sequel since Origins, and it follows just a year after. Though Ubisoft has already confirmed another isn't coming next year, this game following so hot on the heels of the last one runs the risk of exhausting fans again. The critical reception suggests that the shine hasn't worn off quite yet, with generally positive reviews that note this one isn't quite as novel, but learns its lessons well from its predecessor. Read on for a look at impressions from around the industry, or check GameSpot's sister site Metacritic for a wider view.

  • Game: Assassin's Creed Odyssey
  • Developer / Publisher: Ubisoft
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
  • Release date: October 5
  • Price: US $60 / £49 / AU $78

GameSpot -- 8/10

"Assassin's Creed Odyssey's ambition is admirable, which is reflected in its rich attention to detail for the era and its approach to handling the multi-faceted narrative with strong protagonists at the lead. While its large-scale campaign--clocking in at over 50 hours--can occasionally be tiresome, and some features don't quite make the impact they should, Odyssey makes great strides in its massive and dynamic world, and it's a joy to venture out and leave your mark on its ever-changing setting." -- Alessandro Fillari [Full review]

GamesRadar -- 5/5

"In the end this journey is all about choice. The people you decide to let live, the romances you have, the sexuality lines you blur, the questlines you follow, the people you help and hinder and the RPG picks you make. It's an utterly beautifully crafted world and story, with cutscenes for literally days. After 70 hours I've only just finished the main storyline and I still have plenty to see in Odyssey's Greece, and it's a joy to keep on exploring." -- Sam Loveridge [Full review]

IGN -- 92/100

"Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a resounding achievement in world building, environment, and engaging gameplay with occasional problems throughout. Its incredible recreation of ancient Greece is something I'll want to go back to long after I've finished its main story, and its excellent systems mesh together in a way that's hard to beat. While there are definite rough edges, Odyssey sets a new bar for Assassin's Creed games and holds its own in the eternal debate over the best open-world roleplaying games ever." -- Brandin Tyrrel [Full review]

Forbes -- 8.5/10

"Origins was delightful and Odyssey hits almost all the same notes, so there's a lot to like about it as well. But this series needs a bit of breathing room, and I hope it gets another bit of rest after this." -- Paul Tassi [Full review]

Game Informer -- 8.25/10

"Assassin's Creed Odyssey aims high in its attempts to blend innovative additions with returning features. The execution might be uneven, but Ubisoft Quebec ultimately strikes a successful balance among the many parts. The story is compelling, both as a hero's journey and in the way it ties into the series' wider lore. Exploring the world is fun, combat is empowering, and getting epic loot is a thrill. That solid core formula carries Odyssey a long way, but like Icarus and his wax wings, it's not enough to reach the bright star on the horizon." -- Joe Juba [Full review]

The Escapist -- 6/10

"I'm still going to go back once this review is written, to play more, and to definitively solve the mysteries of Kassandra's odyssey, but I will in all likelihood spend real money on an in-game permanent XP boost to reduce the amount of stuff I have to see that I just don't care about. If that sounds like an endorsement with a small but appreciable 'but' attached, well." -- Arthur Gies [Full review]
