Battlefield 5's Firestorm Battle Royale Mode Coming In 2019

By Steve Watts on Oct 24, 2018 11:55 pm

The battle royale mode for Battlefield V will come next March, DICE has announced. A post on the official site detailed the post-launch roadmap, and announced that the "Firestorm" Battle Royale mode will come in March 2019.

That's the third chapter of its planned content, to follow Chapter 1 (Overture) and Chapter 2 (Lightning Strikes). Overture will bring the tank-focused Panzerstorm map, a new War Story called The Last Tiger, and new vehicle customization features. It's coming roughly two weeks after launch. Then sometime between January and March, Lightning Strikes will add Combined Arms and Squad Conquest.

Firestorm will support up to 64 players, divided into teams of four. It gets its name from a ring of fire that will close throughout the match, as players scrounge for weapons and fight to be the last team remaining. It's being developed by Criterion rather than DICE. We still don't know much about Firestorm on the whole, considering it wasn't part of the beta.

Battle royale modes are popping up in more games recently. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Battlefield's chief competitor in the military shooter genre, launched with its own battle royale mode called Blackout.

Battlefield V is coming on November 20, following a short delay out of October to respond to feedback from the beta. If you jump in early you can get a few bonus items.

Battlefield 5's Free Post-Launch DLC Outlined

By Kevin Knezevic on Oct 24, 2018 11:54 pm

Battlefield V arrives on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in a little less than a month, and it'll offer a variety of different modes for players to dive into right from the outset. That certainly won't be the extent of the content it'll receive, however; developer EA DICE will roll out a regular stream of updates for the shooter as part of its "Tides of War" live service, and now we have a much better idea of what that will entail.

DICE has outlined its post-launch roadmap for Battlefield V on the game's official website. In contrast to Battlefield 1, which initially required players to purchase a Premium Pass to receive its expansions, all future maps, modes, and other content for Battlefield V will be free for all players.

The first "chapter" of this post-release content, dubbed Overture, is slated to arrive in December, roughly two weeks after the game's launch. It will introduce the tank-focused Panzerstorm map and an additional War Story titled The Last Tiger. On top of that, DICE will implement vehicle customization and the first iteration of the game's Practice Range, as well as weekly events.

No Caption Provided

The second chapter of Tides of War, Lightning Strikes, will launch January-March. It adds the cooperative mode Combined Arms, in which you and up to three other players take on Combat Strike missions across several maps. Additionally, Lightning Strikes brings the new Squad Conquest mode, a revamped Rush mode, and another assortment of weekly events and rewards to the game.

The third chapter of DICE's post-launch content is dubbed Trial by Fire, and it is scheduled to kick off in March. It's biggest addition to the game is Firestorm, Battlefield V's battle royale-style mode. It supports up to 64 players divided into teams of four, and like other battle royale games, pits them on a gradually shrinking map in a struggle to be the last team remaining. Trial by Fire will also add a new Greece map and more weekly events and rewards.

DICE teases that more new maps, weapons, vehicles, and other content is also on the way; details on those will be revealed later. Battlefield V launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 20. Those who pick it up within the first week will receive two free bonus items in the game. Those with an EA Access subscription will also be able to play up to 10 hours of the game early beginning November 9.

Fortnite's Fortnitemare Challenges Feature Dancing With Gargoyles; New Deadfire Skin Revealed

By Tamoor Hussain on Oct 24, 2018 11:49 pm

Epic Games has rolled out Fortnitemares, a spooky, Halloween-themed Fortnite event that is now available in both the Battle Royale and Save The World modes. In the former, players will have a new set of challenges to complete (with more still to come as the event continues), and in return will receive loot and cool new cosmetics, including a special skin.

"During Fortnitemares, you'll face off against Cube Monsters in a whole new way of playing Battle Royale," Epic explains. "There are new weapons to fight back against these creepy creatures, like the Six Shooter and Fiend Hunter Crossbow. Take out the Cube Fiends and Fragments to pick up loot, and survive against enemy players."

As part of the event, the new Deadfire Outfit is available and is described as a "new type of reactive outfit" that changes as you progress in a match. This, Epic says, will let players "show off [their] skills in style." The changes to the outfit are dependent on the damage you deal to your enemies and also how long you're able to stay alive. The skin also comes with the Shackled Stone Back Bling and the Dark Shard pickaxe is also available in the store. These are also reactive cosmetics.

In terms of challenges, Fortnitemare will gift players with cosmetics for completing them. However, Epic is planning to refresh the challenges and the rewards "every few days." Those that stick it through and complete the final set of challenges will get the Dark Engine glide, which you can see below, along with the Deadfire skin and the first batch of Fortnitemare challenges. The most difficult of this first batch of challenges involves dancing with gargoyles--the location of which are not provided in-game.

Fortnitemares Challenges (Set 1)

  • Destroy Cube Monsters (200) -- 500 XP
  • Deal damage with Assault Rifles or Pistols to Cube Monsters (5,000) -- 500 XP
  • Visit a Corrupted Area in different matches (7) -- 500 XP
  • Dance at different Gargoyles (5) -- 500 XP

In Save The World, meanwhile, Hexsylvania has returned. Players will be able to check out "multiple sets of story quests and earn new rewards as you fight the fright alongside your friends." You can learn more about these on Epic's website.

Epic Games has also detailed the contents of Fortnite update 6.20 which, along with giving players Fortnitemares, adds the new Six Shooter weapon to the game. It also gives players the ability to redeploy Gliders after they've landed on the Island. This feature is something Epic is testing, so it's available in all Battle Royale game modes.

Fortnite Challenge Guides/Location Maps -- Gargoyles' Shooting Gallery; Clocktower, Pink Tree, More (Season 6)

By Tamoor Hussain on Oct 24, 2018 11:44 pm

We're approaching the midway point of Fortnite: Battle Royale's Season 6. Week 4 of challenges is now available and consists of the standard mix of objectives, as there are three challenges for all players and additional four reserved for Battle Pass owners. And before Week 5's appear, we've gotten new Fortnitemares challenges tied to the new update's Halloween event. This will see new challenges rolled out routinely over the course of the event, separate from the standard weekly challenges.

Meanwhile, Fortnite: Battle Royale Season 6 rolls on, and new challenges continue to roll out on all platforms--PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. Those feed into the latest Battle Pass, and as with previous seasons, you level that up by playing the game and completing challenges. Every week there will be a new set of tasks for players to complete that unlock Battle Stars and level up the Battle Pass to unlock goodies.

Like in Season 5, weekly challenges are split into two categories. The first is a free set, which are available to all Fortnite players, while the second is for Battle Pass owners. To get a Battle Pass you'll need to cough up 950 V-Bucks in game. If you haven't bought the Battle Pass, you'll be able to complete certain objectives and earn some rewards, but some of the coolest unlocks are locked behind the paid Battle Pass, so if you plan on sinking lots of time into Fortnite, we recommend picking that up.

Although you can pick up a Battle Pass later and go back to unlock any premium rewards you've earned based on the tier that you've already reached, there is one major advantage in doing it at the start of the season. Namely that you'll get bonus XP, which is dished out for just playing the game either alone or with buddies. This XP levels you up and translates to Battle Stars that also level up your pass, so it may be a good idea to get in early if you can.

Alongside the standard challenges, there are also Hunting Party challenges for those who buy the Battle Pass. These operate similarly to the Blockbuster and Road Trip objectives of past seasons, where each one tasks you with completing all challenges from a single week during the season. The reward for each is a loading screen that reveals the location of a hidden Battle Pass tier you can then obtain. Additionally, by completing seven of these, you'll earn a Legendary skin that will remain a mystery for now.

Each week we'll have guides on the trickiest challenges to make things quicker and easier for you. However, this article will serve as a hub for all our guides so, as the season goes on, you'll be able to keep coming back here to get the latest guides as well as ones for previous weeks. This will be especially helpful if you decided to pick up a Battle Pass part of the way into the season. If you're wondering if it's worth the effort, you can take a look at all of Fortnite Season 6's new skins, cosmetics, emotes, sprays, and other items to unlock in this gallery of Fortnite Season 6 Battle Pass rewards.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Mythical Beasts Guide: Locations, Tips, And How To Beat Them

By Alessandro Fillari on Oct 24, 2018 11:38 pm

There's much to experience in the massive open-world of Ancient Greece in Assassin's Creed Odyssey. But as is tradition, the Assassin's Creed series has a very strange way of blending historical accuracy with bizarre supernatural elements--and Odyssey is no exception. While you'll mostly take on pirates, foot soldiers, and the sinister members of the Cult of Kosmos throughout the various locales around the world, there are some encounters that will take some extra effort to find--leading to Odyssey's most memorable fights against beasts of legend.

In this feature, we breakdown Assassin's Creed Odyssey's most involved and unique quest-line, which pits you against some various mythological beasts that reference Greek mythology, including the deadly Medusa and the Cyclops. In addition to giving you all the details on how to find them, we also offer up some tips on how to overcome their unique challenges. Obviously, there are some spoilers in this article, which relates to the midpoint of the game. Proceed with caution.

Where To Begin

No Caption Provided

To start your epic quest to vanquish the four mythological creatures hiding out within Ancient Greece, you'll need to reach the midpoint in the main Odyssey quest, which takes you to island of Thera, just north of Messara. After solving the puzzles to gain entry into the ruins, you'll meet a very important character inside, who will give you a new Odyssey quest-line called Between Two Worlds. This quest tasks you with finding four lost Isu artifacts that have been stolen, which are now hidden across the known world of Greece.

While you may get the urge to drop everything and set out to complete this quest after the cutscene's finish, you're much better off holding off until much later into the main story. Not only will you have the proper gear to take out some of the harder challenges, some of the legendary gear that drops from these quests will also become more powerful. We'd recommend you finish the main story, which will take you through many of the islands and locales that house these lost artifacts. What follows is the best order to take on these creatures, based on level.

The Sphinx And Where To Find It

No Caption Provided

Marked as level 35 quest, the Lord of the Sphinx mission tasks you with finding an artifact hidden in Boetia. Located on the southern coast of Lake Koapis, you'll find ancient Isu ruins shrouded in fog. At these ruins you'll find a discover a Sphinx statue and an NPC named Gorgias, who's searching for a piece of a medallion to unlock the secrets of the temple. Tasking you to find his apprentice, you'll start the next leg of the quest, which will have you travel to the Tomb of Menoikeus. Located in the northeastern part of the Scorched Rolling Plains region in Boetia, you'll find the remains of the apprentice, killed by a nearby alpha lion--which has also eaten the other half of the medallion. After securing the piece, head back to the ruins to proceed with the next part of the quest.

Once you return, you'll find that Gorgias and the statue are missing. Before proceeding further, be sure to save your progress. Taking the piece of the medallion that Gorgias left behind, you'll be able to place the item on a pedestal in the ruins, which will summon the mythological Sphinx. Surprisingly, you won't engage in an actual fight with the Sphinx, but rather a game of careful wits. After conversing with the beast, the challenge begins. You'll only have one chance to clear this encounter, as offering an incorrect solution to the puzzles will result in instant death. Moreover, each subsequent reload of your save will see a different set of riddles offered up.

Think carefully before giving your responses to the Sphinx's questions, as your answers also apply to several runes scattered around the ruins, which have to be activated after the riddles are complete. If you can't find the rune assigned to your given answers, then you'll meet certain doom. After making it through the riddles correctly, you'll best the Sphinx at its own game and collect your first artifact, along with a legendary Sphinx Figurehead for your ship.

The Cyclops And Where To Find It

No Caption Provided

You'll likely be aware of the location of this particular mythological beast early on into your adventure. Found on the Isle of Thisvi just south of Phokis (one of the first areas you go to after getting your ship), you'll find the ancient Isu ruins after diving into the Forgotten Isle's inner cove. However, the door leading to the mythical Cyclops is sealed, and will remain so until you take on the necessary quest. At a recommend level of 35, the quest that opens the chambers of the Cyclops is located on Kythera Island, towards the southernmost edge of the map. Head to the region known as Pilgrim Hill to find a quest giver near a statue, opening up the mission A God Among Men. By taking this mission, you'll eventually Empedokles, who believes himself to be a god. After assisting him throughout the Island, he'll venture off to the Isle of Thisvi to meet a fellow god.

Once you head back to the small island, head into the island's underground to find Empedokles outside the door, who's ready to reunite with his fellow god. Suffice it to say, things don't work out for Empedokles, and you're left to do battle against the mythological creature. As one of the largest enemies in the game, the Cyclops--also known as Brontes, The Thunderer--has an advantage when it comes to range and raw strength. However, the boss' slow speed and lumbering movement can be taken advantage of. You can also aim the obvious weak spot of its glowing eye with your ranged attacks, dealing some solid damage. Halfway through the fight, the Cyclops will become more aggressive, resulting in some falling debris throughout the chamber. Keep chipping away while avoiding the falling the rocks to take him down. After the fight you'll acquire the next artifact, and along with the Polyphemos Cyclops Bludgeon, a legendary heavy blade.

The Minotaur And Where To Find It

No Caption Provided

Located in Messara, on the island in the southeast section of the map, you'll come across a small town in Minotaur Hills that worships the mighty beast. This area serves as a great place to learn more about the history of the region, level up, and gain some new gear--including a replica helmet of the Minotaur (which is just a bull's head fashioned into a helm). Just west of town, you'll find Knossos Palace ruins located in Mino's Legacy. In this area you'll find a child named Ardos, who's trying to rescue his father lost in the chambers of the Minotaur below the palace. Starting the Myths and Minotaurs quest, you'll learn more about the labyrinth and discover that you'll need to find the medallion to open up access.

From here, you'll begin the Of Minotaurs and Men questline, which includes sub-quests around the region including Blood in The Water, Recollections, and Full Circle. Along the way, you'll interact with the allies of Ardos' father, local merchants, and assist the boy's current caretaker. The questline involving the caretaker will have you cross paths with the Swordfish, who just so happens to be a member of the Cult of Kosmos. After completing these tasks, you'll acquire the key to the labyrinth of the Minotaur. While exploring the maze, you'll find the body of Ardos' father, and not long after, encounter the mythological beast.

The battle with the Minotaur can be quite challenging, which requires you to be at least level 40 to make a successful go of it. In this battle, you'll have to dodge many of the Minotaur's attacks and head in for an opening when its vulnerable. Its most powerful move is a ram attack, which you can fortunately see coming. The beast can also stun itself when it rams against an obstruction, allowing you to get some solid hits in. Staying and attacking at a distance is also an effective way of getting the upper hand against the beast. Once you defeat the minotaur, you'll get the next artifact and a new legendary axe known as the Minotaur's Labrys.

The Medusa And Where To Find It

No Caption Provided

For the final mythological beast, you'll need to travel to the island of Lesbos, located in the northeastern corner of the map. At this point in the game, you'll likely have finished the main story before traveling to this island, which is one of Odyssey's most difficult areas. To start the quest, head to the town of Eresos in the Petrified Valley, which is located on the southwestern coast of the island. In town, you'll find a female NPC named Bryce. After conversing with her, you'll start the quest Romancing the Stone Garden, which tasks you with finding her lover lost in the Petrified Temple. After learning more of the Temple and its mysteries, you'll need to new quest called Shadows of Serpents, along with all of its sub-quests that to open the pathway to the Medusa.

These side-quests will take some time to finish, as they'll have you travel across Lesbos and to the nearby island of Chios. One mission has you infiltrate a village full of female hunters, all of whom are lethal archers and agiles fighters. However, if you already completed the Artemis quest-line involving the hunt for legendary animals, your choices in that mission can allow you to become the leader of the village, letting you come and go without incident. The other quest has you track down an adventurer who's made the dubious claim that he wields the spear that killed Medusa. After completing the necessary steps, head back to the temple to open up the way to Medusa's lair.

The battle against Medusa is Odyssey's most challenging and complex encounter. Choosing to fight at range with a squad of stone mercenaries at her side, the Medusa can petrify targets--namely you--while also calling in aerial attacks that deal heavy damage. In order to remove her protective shield, you'll need eliminate her guards, all while avoiding her petrifying gaze and magic attacks. Throughout the room are several stone pillars, which can offer safe protection from her gaze. After taking out the minions, the beast will become vulnerable, allowing you to deal direct damage to her. During this state, the Medusa will teleport around the arena and immediately follow-up with a ranged energy attack. This will be a long fight, so be patient and stick with a certain rhythm of attacks, both ranged and close-range, and eventually you'll take out Odyssey's most difficult boss--earning you the final artifact and the legendary sword Harpe of Perseus.

Netflix's Daredevil Review (Season 3) -- No Fear, Again

By Michael Rougeau on Oct 24, 2018 11:35 pm

The Netflix Marvel superhero universe has had its ups and downs, and nothing can really make up for how bad Iron Fist Season 1 was, and what it did to The Defenders. But sometimes when you hit rock bottom, there's a silver lining: There's no direction to go but up. The Punisher was pretty good, Luke Cage Season 2 was a step in the right direction, and even Iron Fist Season 2 was watchable. Now that we've mostly forgotten about Jessica Jones Season 2, it's time to return to where it all started: Daredevil. And you know what? It's good to be back.

Daredevil Season 3 has a lot preceding it, but except where it's relevant to Matt Murdock's story, it mostly ignores what's come before. In the first six episodes, which were sent to press ahead of time, there's no mention of Jessica, Luke, Danny, or The Hand. Even Elektra is just a memory, albeit one that haunts Matt still.

Daredevil Season 3 is about rebuilding. Matt (Charlie Cox) suffered his most emotionally and physically devastating defeat yet when an entire building fell on him at the end of Defenders, and he's forced to find the time and will to heal on multiple fronts. Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) has a scheme to get out of prison, but he puts himself at great risk to pull it off. Foggy (Elden Henson) and Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) are still dealing with the fact that Matt is gone, trying to put the pieces of their lives together without their best friend. Naturally, his eventual return in Season 3 will only complicate things further.

To fans, it's no secret that Matt survived the events of Defenders. He spends much of Daredevil Season 3's first half recuperating in the basement of the Catholic orphanage where he was raised, tended to by a nun who may or may not be his mother (in the comics she is; it hasn't yet been made clear in the show). At the season's start, his hearing has suffered, and without it his "sight" has also waned. An early season boxing match puts Daredevil's brutality, the actors' impressive physicality, and Matt's threshold for punishment all on display. Daredevil spends plenty of time wallowing in Matt's well earned nihilism, but even then it can be a joy to watch.

Fisk, meanwhile, proves to be the manipulative villain we remember him as from Daredevil Season 1. He flips and turns FBI informant, snitching on New York's Albanian mob and almost getting himself offed in the process. That triggers a transfer out of prison and into a cushy high-rise, "for his own safety," of course. He claims to be doing it all for Vanessa--played by Ayelet Zurer in Season 1, though she's yet to reappear in Season 3--but with the Kingpin, there's always the sense that there's more going on than we're ever made aware of. No doubt that shoe will drop before Season 3 is over.

No Caption Provided

Fisk's recruitment of crack shot FBI agent Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter--who we know from the comics as Bullseye--only begins to see its full payoff by the time Season 3 is halfway through. But Dex gradually proves himself to be a dangerous presence, an obsessive sociopath with perfect aim who was taught as a child to blend in with society. When the cracks in his "normal" life start to shake his foundations, Fisk knows exactly how to dig his fingers in deep.

The news of Fisk's "release" doesn't go over well in Hell's Kitchen, and protesters keep vigil outside his suite, adding to the feeling that this is all leading somewhere topical. Foggy and Karen fight back in their own ways--still working at the Bulletin, Karen starts investigating what Fisk is really up to, while Foggy attempts to get at him through legal means.

That's all to say that Daredevil Season 3 puts the focus where it belongs: on Matt, Fisk, Foggy, and Karen, the core characters that we originally grew to love or hate back in Season 1. With that re-anchoring comes some really cool stylistic choices; there's an entire sequence that plays out in black and white, half flashbacks, half imaginings, with one character walking back through another's life as he strives to learn everything he might use to his advantage. And there's a single-shot fight scene in these first half dozen episodes that's unbelievably impressive, easily rivaling any action that's come before in the whole Netflix Marvel universe.

So yeah, Daredevil is back. And thanks to its much needed laser focus on the characters and stories fans actually care about, you don't even need to be caught up; If you watched Daredevil Season 1 and then stopped, you could pick up again right at the start of Season 3. That definitely says something about how forgettable much of what came in the interim was. But regardless of where you've been all this time, Daredevil Season 3 is worth returning for.

Daredevil Season 3 is now available on Netflix.

With Red Dead Redemption 2's Release Nearly Here, Watch The Launch Trailer

By Tamoor Hussain on Oct 24, 2018 11:34 pm

As promised, Rockstar recently released a new trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2, its eagerly-anticipated open world western. The game is set for release on October 26 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and ahead of this the studio is offering everyone another tease of what they can expect. The launch trailer shows Dutch and Arthur talking about one more big score, before life can improve for their gang. Soon there's scenes of explosions, gunfire, and internal strife, set against talk of loyalty. It's a fairly short, but very sweet trailer. Check it out above.

If that trailer has you sold on getting the game, you can now pre-load RDR2. Those that pre-order the game from the PlayStation or Microsoft Store will be able to download it October 19. Getting it downloaded early means you'll be ready to play as soon as it unlocks on October 26 (barring a day-one patch).

Keep in mind that you'll require 90 GB of hard drive space, so it's worth clearing out those older games that you're not playing anymore. Red Dead Redemption 2 looks set to be Rockstar's biggest game yet. In a recent interview, co-founder Dan Houser said the final game has 300,000 animations and 500,000 lines of dialogue. Houser also said some members of the development team worked 100-hour weeks several times in 2018 to finish the game. Given the well-documented destructive impact crunch can have on people, this attracted criticism.

Houser later clarified that he was referring to specific members of senior writing team and not the entire Rockstar development team. "After working on the game for seven years, the senior writing team, which consists of four people, Mike Unsworth, Rupert Humphries, Lazlow and myself, had, as we always do, three weeks of intense work when we wrapped everything up," he explained. "Three weeks, not years. We have all worked together for at least 12 years now, and feel we need this to get everything finished. After so many years of getting things organized and ready on this project, we needed this to check and finalize everything." Houser also noted that other members of development team were not expected to work similarly long hours.

Employees of Rockstar have also started sharing their positive experiences of working at the studio. Many have said that, although they have occasionally worked long hours, this was by choice and not close to the 100 hour figure.

Red Dead Redemption 2 casts players as Arthur Morgan, a key member of the Van der Linde gang, as they fight for survival in an America that is steadily wiping out outlaws of his ilk. The game has a sprawling world and numerous in-depth features including weapon customization and an improved Dead Eye system, among others. Check out our latest Red Dead Redemption 2 impressions for more.

GameSpot has launched a weekly video series dedicated to Red Dead Redemption 2 called Quickdraw. The first episode, which you can watch here, focuses on the elements of other Rockstar titles that manifest in Red Dead Redemption 2. It analyzes how games like Bully, Grand Theft Auto V, and Max Payne contribute to the sequel's overall gameplay experience.

Fortnite: Epic Adds A New Skin That Works Differently

By Tamoor Hussain on Oct 24, 2018 11:30 pm

In time for Halloween, Epic Games is giving Fortnite a spooky makeover. The Fortnitemares event introduces an element of player versus environment to the game by spawning Cube Monsters, which are effectively mindless zombie-like creatures for players to gun down. Alongside this, there's an interesting new kind of skin available.

Fortnitemare's Deadfire Outfit is described by Epic as a "new type of reactive outfit." This first of its kind skin is more dynamic than the usual ones and actually changes depending on the way you play. As explained in the Fortnite blog, the look of the outfit will change depending on the damage you deal to enemies--both players and the new AI-controlled Cube Monsters. Along with that, the way it looks will shift based on how long you last in a match. Take a look at the three different variants below.

Alongside this skin, Epic has also introduced the Shackled Stone Back Bling to go along with it, and the Dark Shard pickaxe can also be found in the in-game store. Both of these items are called "reactive cosmetics." The Deadfire skin is available for 2,000 V-Bucks, while the Dark Shard harvesting tool costs 1,200 V-Bucks.

The Fortnitemares event is now live, and there are a unique set of challenges available. You can see all the new Fortnitemare challenges here. Epic has also release the patch notes for Fortnite update 6.20. This is a rather sizeable update that, along with giving players Fortnitemares, adds the new Six Shooter weapon to the game. Players also have the ability to redeploy Gliders after they've landed on the Island. This is being tested out by Epic, so it's available in all game modes.

Free Mythical Pokemon Zeraora Is Now Available For Ultra Sun And Moon

By Kevin Knezevic on Oct 24, 2018 11:30 pm

Pokemon fans now have a chance to get their hands on October's free Legendary Pokemon for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, but those aren't the only rare monsters up for grabs this month. To commemorate the release of the upcoming Lost Thunder expansion for Pokemon TCG, The Pokemon Company is also giving away a rare Mythical Pokemon for the 3DS games: the Thunderclap Pokemon Zeraora.

First revealed this past April, Zeraora is a fast, cat-like Electric-type monster debuting in the latest Pokemon movie, The Power of Us. This marks the first opportunity players will have to get their hands on one; like other Mythical Pokemon, Zeraora isn't obtainable within the actual games, so you'll want to add one to your collection while you can.

As usual, the way you'll be able to get Zeraora depends on where you live. In the US, players can pick up a download code for the Mythical Pokemon at GameStop stores from October 19 to November 9; in the UK, The Pokemon Company is distributing codes for Zeraora at Game stores from October 1 to November 15.

Unlike most of the other free Pokemon given out this year, you can only redeem the Zeraora code in either Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon. Regardless of which version you claim it in, the Pokemon comes at level 50 and is equipped with an Air Balloon, an item that negates Ground-type attacks until it is popped. It also knows the moves Plasma Fists, Thunder Punch, Close Combat, and Thunder.

To redeem your download code, first select Mystery Gift from the games' main menu, then choose the option to receive your gift via a code/password. Input your code and Zeraora will be downloaded into your game. You'll then need to pick it up from the deliveryman waiting inside any Pokemon Center.

In addition to Zeraora, The Pokemon Company is giving away two Legendary Pokemon originally from the Black and White versions this month: Reshiram and Zekrom. The pair will be available in the US via a download code, this one from Target stores. You can see all the free Pokemon for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon available right now.

Where Are Fortnitemares' Gargoyles? Dance Locations For Fortnite Challenge

By Array on Oct 24, 2018 11:29 pm

Epic has launched a major update for Fortnite that includes Fortnitemares, a new Halloween-themed event. This features Save the World and Battle Royale components, and in the latter mode, there is a new set of challenges to complete with separate rewards from the standard weekly challenges. Among the first batch is one asking you to dance with gargoyles; below, you'll find a guide on where to go and the locations for all the gargoyles you'll need.

This challenge asks you to dance in front of five different gargoyles. The trouble is, these are spread all over the Island, so you may end up wasting time running into dead-ends. Luckily, we've managed to find them and can give you their exact locations to save you the time and effort. You thankfully don't need to dance in front of all five in a single match, so you can leisurely take care of these across multiple games. Just don't be surprised if players are camping on these spots, looking for easy kills.

Below you'll find a map with the exact locations of the Gargoyles as well as a list of where the gargoyles are. You can also watch the video above to see us complete the challenge.

Fortnitemare Day 1 Gargoyle Locations

  • Viking Village: Head inside the large building atop the hill.
  • North of Flush Factory on top of the mountain
  • West of Lazy Links in the mine that's shaped like an umbrella
  • Haunted Hills inside the Gothic Castle, in the main hall
  • Between Wailing Woods and Risky Reels on the hill
  • Tomato Temple: In the lower courtyard
  • Retail Row: In the store with the Battle Bus above it

Unlike normal weekly challenges, completing these Fortnitemares challenges won't unlock Battle Stars for you to level your Battle Pass up. Instead you'll get experience points and specific rewards such as an emoticon, spray, contrail, and glider. Additionally, Epic is rolling out new challenges every two days, and to get that glider you'll need to complete all of them.

This first set of challenge sis available now, and you can get the details on all of them in our Fortnitemares challenges roundup. There are four challenges in total in this set; three of them are fairly straightforward, with the gargoyle one above being the outlier.

Fortnitemare also introduced a cool new skin type that reacts to the way you play the game. If you haven't already checked it out, you can see the Outlander Outfit and find out what sets it apart from other skins. In addition to this skin, Epic has also introduced the Shackled Stone Back Bling and the Dark Shard pickaxe. Both of these items are also called "reactive cosmetics." The Deadfire skin is available for 2,000 V-Bucks, while the Dark Shard harvesting tool costs 1,200 V-Bucks.

Fortnitemare was introduced as part of the Fortnite update 6.20 update, which also includes a new weapon: the Six Shooter. Epic is also testing the ability to re-deploy gliders after you've landed, so you can do that in the Battle Royale's various game modes now too.

Fortnite's "Fortnitemares" Event -- All You Need To Know

By Steve Watts on Oct 24, 2018 11:22 pm

Fortnite's Halloween event this year has kicked off in style with "Fortnitemares," an ongoing world event that offers special challenges and spooky cosmetic items. The event is going on across both the Battle Royale and Save the World modes, so no matter which flavor of Fortnite you prefer you can find something to do.

What Is It?

Fortnitemares is an ongoing world event lasting from October 23-November 26, introduced in the patch update 6.20. It offers exclusive cosmetic items and special world events with new enemies, including lots to do across its two modes.

In a special playlist in the the PvP mode Battle Royale, you'll face off against cube monsters that operate very similarly to the Save the World zombie-like creatures. The mysterious Cube spawned this legion of AI cube monsters, which will attack you if you get too close. Defeating them can get you some random loot and shield power. This is notably the first time the PvP mode has been invaded by AI enemies. Completing special challenges, some of which focus on defeating these AI enemies, can earn you a whole new type of cosmetic items and some special gear.

Separately, in the PvE Save the World mode, Hexsylvania returns with new story quests. Just logging onto Save the World during the Fortnitemares event will earn you some skins. Save the World isn't going free-to-play this year as previously planned, but founder's packs are currently half-priced.

Fortnitemares Battle Royale Challenges

Fortnitemare challenges are set to alternate every few days through the end of the event period, so you'll have to check back often to maximize your rewards. Currently the first set of challenges is live. Many are self-explanatory, but click below for more detailed guides on more complex challenges.

  • Destroy Cube Monsters (200) -- 500 XP
  • Deal damage with Assault Rifles or Pistols to Cube Monsters (5,000) -- 500 XP
  • Visit a Corrupted Area in different matches (7) -- 500 XP
  • Dance at different Gargoyles (5) -- 500 XP

New Items And Cosmetics

The biggest new addition to Fortnitemares are the permanent rewards, including a whole new type of cosmetic. The centerpiece is the new Deadfire skin, a "reactive skin" that changes based upon your play in a given match that will cost you 2,000 V-Bucks. It's joined by the Shackled Stone Back Bling and Dark Shard pickaxe (1,200 V-Bucks), which are both "reactive cosmetics."

The 6.20 update also added a new Six Shooter weapon, and the ability to redeploy Gliders.

Fallout 76 Xbox One Beta Was An "Amazing Start," Says Bethesda

By Jordan Ramée on Oct 24, 2018 11:20 pm

Fallout 76 had its first beta test on October 23. The test was only four hours long and exclusive to Xbox One, but Bethesda tweeted out that it was an "amazing start" for the game. You can watch GameSpot video publisher Ben Janca and video producer Jean-Luc Seipke play through the Xbox One beta in the video above.

All in all, everything went pretty well considering it was a beta test. Ben's game crashed once at the start, and Jean-Luc faced some troublesome issues when trying to join a party. There were some minor performance issues, but that could have been a result of the stream. More worrying were the severe frame rate drops whenever there was more than two players fighting together and the noticeable lag when facing multiple enemies.

Prior to the beta's launch, Bethesda released a statement that acknowledged Fallout 76 still has plenty of bug fixes and troubleshooting sessions in its future. "Given what we're doing with 76, we know we're opening everyone up to all new spectacular issues none of us have encountered," Bethesda wrote. "Some we're aware of, such as areas where performance needs to improve with lots of players." The letter also thanked players for their continued support.

Another Fallout 76 beta--again for Xbox One--is scheduled for October 27 and there's one for Xbox One, PS4, and PC scheduled for October 30. To be a part of either beta, you'll need to pre-order the game. However, even if you do pre-order Fallout 76, you might not get access to every upcoming test as Bethesda is inviting concentrated chunks of players to different betas. Fallout 76 releases on November 14 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Where Are Fortnite Shooting Galleries Locations? How To Get A Score Of 3 Or More (Week 4 Challenge, Season 6)

By Tamoor Hussain on Oct 24, 2018 11:20 pm

Yet another batch of challenges in Fortnite: Battle Royale--these for Week 4 of Season 6--are now available. You can read broadly about what to expect in our full challenge list, but there are two in particular that you may need some specific help with. These fall in the premium Battle Pass-only challenges section, and one asks you to get a score of 3 or more at different Shooting Galleries. The difficult part is actually finding the galleries' locations if you're not very familiar with the island, so we've put together a map and guide to point you in the right direction. Here's where to go and what to do.

The actual objects you're looking for in the environment are red targets that appear when you stand on pressure-sensitive plates. You'll be able to spot the locations by the more obvious scoreboard and signs that are placed nearby. There are a total of five spots that you'll need to hit, and you need to shoot at least three at each one.

When it comes to the actual shooting aspect of this, we recommend having a precision weapon like an assault rifle, as the targets can be quite small. You'll be able to find these targets at the areas marked in the map below. Simply head to these locations, stand on the pressure plate, and gun down those targets--that's all it takes. You can use the map for specific locations and watch the video above to see us complete the challenge.

  • Outside Viking Village

The latest Fortnite update, 6.10, is now available across all platforms and introduces the Quadcrasher, a two-seater vehicle with a boost function that allows it to destroy structures. If you're playing Fortnite on a PS4 Pro connected to a 4K TV, the patch also enables the game to display at 1440p instead of 1080p. The other big addition is the new "Events" tab, and this serves as an in-game hub for tournaments. If you haven't already done them, we've got guides for previous weeks of Fortnite's Season 6 challenges.

Wonder Woman 1984 Delayed, New Release Date Confirmed

By Steve Watts on Oct 24, 2018 11:16 pm

2017's Wonder Woman was a breakout critical success for the often uneven DC cinematic universe. Its sequel is set decades later, in the 1980s--hence the title Wonder Woman 1984--and will take the character into the Cold War. But its debut has been delayed, and it'll no longer hit theaters next year. Warner Bros. has announced a seven-month delay, pushing the the return of Princess Diana to mid-2020.

Star Gal Gadot, who plays the title character, first shared news of the delay via Twitter. Rather than its planned November 1, 2019 date, it will now release on June 5, 2020. Gadot calls this date its "rightful home," presumably a reference to its placement among tent-pole summer movies rather than a fall release. The first movie was released in May 2017.

The news was subsequently confirmed in a statement WB shared with GameSpot. "We had tremendous success releasing the first Wonder Woman film during the summer so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did," said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution. "This move lands the film exactly where it belongs."

No other reason was given for the delay other than the "changing landscape" Gadot mentioned. That could mean that next fall is simply getting too crowded or that space has opened up in the following summer. DC has scheduled its Joker movie for October 2019, so keeping Wonder Woman 1984 in the November slot could have overlapped with it. The gap left behind by the movie has already been filled by two other films, with the upcoming Charlie's Angels and Terminator 6 now set for November 1, 2019.

So far we haven't seen a trailer for WW84, so details are still scarce. Patty Jenkins is returning to direct, and Chris Pine is coming back in some capacity as Steve Trevor. We also know that Kristen Wiig has been cast as one of Wonder Woman's most iconic nemeses, Cheetah.

Fortnite Patch Notes (For Today's Update 6.20): Fortnitemares, New Six Shooter, Glider Re-Deploy, And More

By Tamoor Hussain on Oct 24, 2018 10:59 pm

Epic has detailed the contents of Fortnite's 6.20 update, complete with patch notes and it's quite a substantial one. The big ticket item in today's update is the launch of "Fortnitemares," the game's Halloween-themed event. This coincides with the release of new Halloween skins and challenges, as well as a makeover for the rocket launcher as the Pumpkin Rocket Launcher. [Update: After being disabled due to technical issues, Fortnitemares is back online.]

"Explore all of the tasty treats, exciting appearances, and new looks," Epic Games says about the event. "During Fortnitemares, you'll face off against Cube Monsters in a whole new way of playing Battle Royale. There are new weapons to fight back against these creepy creatures, like the Six Shooter and Fiend Hunter Crossbow.

"Take out the Cube Fiends and Fragments to pick up loot, and survive against enemy players." Interestingly, Fortnitemares seems to blur the line between the Battle Royale mode and Save The World mode by giving players zombie-like enemies to fend off.

The other major additions to Fortnite's Battle Royale mode is the Six Shooter, a new weapon. This uses Medium ammo and can be shot more quickly from the hip, or more slowly (with added precision) by aiming down sights. The aforementioned Fiend Hunter Crossbow is a limited-time item tied to the event.

Also new in Battle Royale is the ability to redeploy Gliders. Epic has said it is currently testing this functionality in all Battle Royale game modes, but only for a limited time. In Playground, there's a new pirate ship minigame as well as "other fun additions" alongside changes to the Spiky Stadium. Take a look at the full Fortnite update 6.20 patch notes below, courtesy of Epic.

Season 6 of Fortnite has been pretty dark and spooky throughout thanks to the "Darkness Rises" theme. Because of this, many of the new skins and cosmetics are quite creepy, like the Dire Wolf skin that evolves as you level it up. For more Halloween events in video games, check out our Halloween roundup.

Fallout 76 Xbox One Beta Dates: When And How Long Is The Next Test?

By Array on Oct 24, 2018 10:52 pm

The beta for Fallout 76 has officially begun, but right this very moment, you can't actually play it. That's because Bethesda only has its servers available at certain times; trying to get in outside of these specific windows will yield a "login failed" error. Below, we've got all the details you need to know regarding exactly when you can play. At the time of this writing, the next test takes place on October 27 (October 28 for some regions), again only on Xbox One.

Fallout 76's debut test was available only on Xbox One for a four-hour window on October 23. That has since passed, with Bethesda deeming it an "amazing start." Additional test periods will continue to be available for a limited time. The purpose of this is to force players together at a specific time to stress test and put the game through its paces. Sessions will typically last 4-8 hours in a given day, and then the beta will be inoperable again until the next session. The process will repeat between now and the game's release date on November 14.

A beta code is available to anyone who pre-ordered the game across Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4. Pre-loading is only available on Xbox One for now, since the PC and PS4 betas will begin on October 30. You'll receive a code with your physical pre-order to enter into the accounts page, or you'll be entered into the pool automatically if you pre-order a digital copy. Note that those codes don't grant you access. Rather, they put you into the potential pool of players to get a distribution code later, since Bethesda is rolling out the invites in waves.

Upcoming Fallout 76 Beta Times

  • US Pacific Time: 2 PM - 4 PM (Saturday, October 27)
  • US Eastern Time: 5 PM - 7 PM (Saturday, October 27)
  • UK BST: 10 PM - 12 AM (Saturday, October 27)
  • Australia AEDT: 8 AM - 10 AM (Sunday, October 28)

Bethesda plans to let to keep your progress from the beta through to the full game. Pre-ordering also will get you 500 Atoms, the in-game currency, for purchasing cosmetic items in the shop. Fallout 76 is due out on November 14. For more details, check out our guide to everything we know.

Huge Fallout Mod New California Finally Releasing After 7 Years

By Jordan Ramée on Oct 24, 2018 10:41 pm

After seven years of development, Fallout: New California--a free mod for the PC version of Fallout: New Vegas--has released. The mod is single-player experience and acts as an unofficial bridge in the Fallout timeline. Amusingly, New California released the same day as the first Fallout 76 beta, offering a more traditional Fallout experience for those disappointed with the series' new multiplayer-focused direction.

In New California, you play as an orphan who was raised in the San Bernardino Mountains by the survivors of Vault 18. The story picks up 20 years after Fallout 2, when people are still recovering from the aftermath of the New California Republic-Enclave War. As you play, you'll take part in plot lines that ultimately inspire the events of Fallout 3 and New Vegas. If you have the right mods installed, your story in Fallout: New California can seamlessly transition into New Vegas as part of the same long save.

New California's entire campaign can be beaten in six to eight hours, but there's anywhere between 15 and 30 hours of content in each playthrough depending on what you choose to do. The mod has 13 possible endings as well, which are earned depending on the choices you make. Although it's a mod of New Vegas, New California acts as its own separate game. It has its own map--which is about two-thirds the size of the one in New Vegas--and nearly 17,000 lines of spoken dialogue that are all unique to the mod.

To play New California, you'll need the PC version of New Vegas. You don't need the Ultimate edition of the game or its DLC, but it will have to be updated with the latest patches. Make sure you have a mod manager downloaded to your PC as well. The folks behind New California recommend Nexus Vortex or Mod Organizer 2. After that, you just need to download New California from the mod's ModDB page, open your mod manager, follow the on-screen prompts, and you're good to go.

The official Fallout timeline continues with Fallout 76, which releases on November 14 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

What To Expect For Black Friday 2018

By Chris Reed on Oct 24, 2018 10:27 pm

Black Friday 2018 will be here before long, and if you want to save money on holiday gifts (or, ahem, gifts for yourself), you'll want to be prepared for the year's biggest shopping event. Because if you're not prepared, you could miss out on some of the best deals available. To get you ready for Black Friday--and Cyber Monday--we've compiled everything you need to know about this year's day of sales. Let's get to it.

When Is Black Friday 2018?

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, which places it on November 23 this year. But assuming this Black Friday plays out like ones in recent years, many of the sales will begin on Thanksgiving or even earlier in the week. You can also expect to see sales continue over the weekend, plus even more discounts on Cyber Monday, which falls on November 26.

Because these sales have been expanding in recent years, it's worth paying attention to retailers' ads and social media posts to see when, exactly, the discounts will begin. We'll have lots of coverage for all of this year's Black Friday deals on video games, consoles, movies, and electronics, so keep your eyes here as well.

Which Retailers Participate in Black Friday?

If you're after items related to video games and movies, you'll want to pay attention to Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Kohl's, Newegg, Target, and Walmart. You'll also see big sales on digital video games through the PlayStation Store, Nintendo Eshop, Microsoft Store, Steam, the Humble Store, and Fantastical.

What Games Will Go on Sale?

No Caption Provided

You can expect to find discounts on just about every video game from the past few years this Black Friday, including recent releases. As usual, older games will generally get the biggest discounts, but doorbuster sales can drop prices surprisingly low even on newly released games.

For instance, games that came out in January and February of last year--like Resident Evil 7 and For Honor--dropped down to as low as $15 during Black Friday. Some games that were only a couple of weeks old, like Call of Duty: WWII and Need for Speed Payback, dipped as low as $30 or $40 at certain retailers.

Assuming this year's Black Friday deals plays out similarly, you can expect to see huge discounts on games from earlier in 2018, like Monster Hunter World, Sea of Thieves, Far Cry 5, and God of War. For games from recent months, like Octopath Traveler, Madden NFL 19, Spider-Man, and Forza Horizon 4, you might see price drops to the $30 range. Don't be surprised if you see discounts on games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Red Dead Redemption 2 at some retailers, too.

And if you're not into physical copies of games, don't worry: there's a good chance some retailers will sell digital versions of the games at the same sale prices as the physical versions.

Consoles and Accessories Will Get Discounts Too

No Caption Provided

It's not just games that get discounted. Big retailers will be dropping prices on consoles and accessories as well. Last year, all the big retailers offered $50-$100 discounts on Xbox One and PS4 models, often throwing in a $25-$50 gift card as an added bonus. The Nintendo Switch was less than a year old during last year's Black Friday, so it didn't get discounted, but we may see that change this year. Also, most retailers offered $20 discounts on PS4 and Xbox One controllers last year.

If You See a Great Deal, Jump On It

No Caption Provided

Deals that seem too good to be true usually don't last long. Retailers only have a limited amount of stock, and with doorbuster prices, items move fast. So if you manage to find a great game at an incredible price that's in stock, buy it quickly. Otherwise you'll likely miss out.

We'll have lots of Black Friday and Cyber Monday coverage to point you toward the best deals on the biggest games and movies, as well as consoles, accessories, and electronics. Stay tuned.

Destiny 2 Haunted Forest: How To Escape The Scary Pit And Snag Your Loot At The End

By Phil Hornshaw on Oct 24, 2018 10:22 pm

When players finally complete the new Haunted Forest event in Destiny 2's Halloween-themed Festival of the Lost, they're greeted by the usual: a loot chest that holds all their hard-earned winnings. The trouble is, the Haunted Forest has one last scare waiting just under the surface: the stone bridge players cross to reach the chest gives out beneath their feet almost as soon as they touch it, tossing the Guardians into a frightening, blood red pit below. Inside: an unkillable Hive Knight called The Invincible Nightmare.

It's a frightening twist to the horror-themed activity. Instead of getting your loot, you get stuck with a huge, axe-wielding monster, like that moment in every slasher movie when the killer inevitably isn't actually dead, and gets in one final scare. The trouble with the pit, though, is that at first blush, it seems to rob you of everything you fought for in the Haunted Forest, and makes it seem like there's no way to reach the reward chest.

The good news is, even if you don't open the chest at the end of the Haunted Forest, you still get your winnings. They're automatically sent to the Postmaster, just like the stuff from chests in just about any other activity. Once you've earned rewards in the Haunted Forest, they're yours, no matter what condition you're left in by the Invincible Nightmare.

Just because you fall into the Nightmare's pit doesn't mean you're stuck there, though. There's actually a secret escape out of the pit on one of the walls. Look up about midway to one side of the pit and you'll see a small indentation that marks a hole you players can leap through. It takes you out of the pit and onto the side of the bridge under which it hides. Following the narrow pathway from there allows you to climb back up onto the far side of the bridge and claim your loot chest, while also giving you a second to let your heart stop pounding.

It's also possible to avoid falling into the pit altogether, if you're quick. When the stones of the walkway give out beneath Guardians as they cross, they're pulled down thanks to a sort of suction, but it's possible to jump free with the right timing (or, at least, with the triple jump of the Hunter class). You can also stick to the side edges of the bridge and potentially avoid any tricky cobblestones altogether.

If Bungie is following the usual horror movie script with the Haunted Forest, the question now becomes one of how to kill the Invincible Nightmare, like the characters of a Friday the Thirteenth or Halloween movie might try to do. Like all good slasher movies, though, even if players successfully take the Nightmare down, we'll all still be wondering if it's really dead.

Steam's New Competition, The Discord Store, Wants Your Friends To Help Sell You Games

By Phil Hornshaw on Oct 24, 2018 10:17 pm

Discord announced last week the launch of its Discord Store, a PC game-buying portal that'll include its own exclusive titles. The store, created by the company behind the gamer-centric voice and text chat app of the same name, will pack games from indie developers and at least one bigger publisher, along with a few titles that are exclusive to Discord's portal.

Previously available only to Canadian players, the new global Discord Store is all about curation. The company is hoping to put games in front of players that they're more likely to want to buy and play. That curation will be carried out by the Discord team, as well as through recommendations made by players' friends on the Discord service.

The store will also include its own "First on Discord" exclusive titles. There are currently five games on that list: King of the Hat, Minion Masters, Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption, At Sundown and Bad North.

According to a press release from the company, the idea is to create something more akin to a local bookstore experience for the Discord Store. That's in contrast to Valve's massively popular Steam store, which might be better compared to a big box store, or even a whole mall. Where Steam provides players with a massive catalogue of just about every game out there, Discord is hoping a more personal approach will resonate with players.

Alongside the launch of the Discord Store is a new version of Discord's Nitro monthly subscription service. The current, $5 subscription is focused on things like controlling your Discord username and offering higher resolutions for Discord's screen sharing service. The new Nitro bumps the price to $9.99 and adds a gaming component: all-you-can-play access to a catalogue of about 60 titles from partner developers like Deep Silver and Double Fine Productions. The games players get access to through Nitro include This War of Mine, Metro: Last Light Redux, Soma, Wastelanders 2: Director's Cut, INSIDE, Galactic Civilizations III, and Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition.

The catalogues of the Discord Store and Nitro seem pretty confined at the moment, which means it's not likely to threaten Steam anytime soon. But Discord might be onto something with its focus on curation. Discovery of new games is a big problem on Steam both for players and developers, especially small ones whose games are lost in the flood of titles being released. One report had it that 21 games were released on Steam every day in 2017.

Discord claims some 150 million registers users across the globe for its app, so while its store sports fewer games, it's possible the smaller, more personal approach might be an answer for developers who have trouble cutting through the noise on larger portals. Both the Discord Store and Nitro service are available to users today.

Overwatch Won't Get A New Map At BlizzCon, But New Content Is On The Way

By Steve Watts on Oct 24, 2018 09:55 pm

Overwatch is one of Blizzard's ongoing live games, but the company wants to manage expectations ahead of next month's BlizzCon event. In a developer update, game director Jeff Kaplan noted that fans shouldn't expect a new map to be announced at the fan celebration.

He said that given that fans may be expecting this year's announcement to be similar to those of previous years, which would include a new map. For that reason, he wanted to be "explicitly clear" that no new map is coming this time around. He said that new maps announced at BlizzCon have gotten "a little lost in the shuffle" and "didn't have as big of an impact as we wanted."

That said, he did note that the company is working on new map content in general. It sounds as if it simply wants to strategically time it so that it doesn't get overshadowed by a lot of the other happenings around the event. Plus he promised Overwatch announcements for the event without specifying what those might be. Finally, he announced buffs in the works for several characters, which we're currently seeing on the public test realm.

One pre-BlizzCon announcement detailed in the developer update is a new feature called the World Cup Viewer. A beta version will go up before the event through the Battle.net client for PC players. It will let you watch matches live in the spectator point-of-view, with full control over camera movement or even watch in first-person through the eyes of a player.

Blizzard similarly did some pre-event expectation-setting for Diablo. To see all that the event has in store this year, you can enter to win some free virtual tickets. BlizzCon kicks off on November 2.

New Fallout 76 Screenshots Debut Alongside Beta

By Steve Watts on Oct 24, 2018 09:51 pm

Fallout 76's beta is beginning today on Xbox One, and Bethesda has released a whole new batch of screenshots to mark the occasion. These images put an emphasis on the lovely vistas of West Virginia, albeit a slightly more irradiated version than you may have seen in the state's tourism ads. [Update: The first beta test has wrapped up, and you can watch us trying it out in the video above.]

To prepare for launch, the company also released a letter to its fans thanking them for their support and cautioning that this is a very different kind of Fallout game. It stressed that the studio cares about these worlds and wants to do right by them, and that as an online and live game the launch of Fallout 76 would be just the beginning. The studio is looking ahead to a long period of bug fixes and other support.

"Given what we're doing with 76, we know we're opening everyone up to all new spectacular issues none of us have encountered," Bethesda wrote. "Some we're aware of, such as areas where performance needs to improve with lots of players."

The beta is coming first to Xbox One, with PC and PS4 to follow on October 30. Pre-ordering will grant you access to the beta but you may not get in right away. Instead, Bethesda will be giving out codes for the beta itself as it invites in more players to stress test. For that same reason, the tests themselves will take place in concentrated chunks of a few hours at a time to force players together.

The beta is said to be the the full game and your progress will carry over to the full game. The full game launches on November 14.

Five Ways Black Ops 4's Blackout Mode Can Improve In The Future

By Phil Hornshaw on Oct 24, 2018 09:34 pm

Call of Duty is the first major shooter franchise to wade into the thickening fray that is the battle royale genre in an attempt to dethrone the existing favorites: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite. The new Blackout battle royale mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 makes a strong case for the ascendance of Call of Duty in the genre, too. Blackout takes a lot of things that have become signature elements of battle royale, like last-player-standing matches, huge maps, randomized weapons, and careful gameplay, and tightens up the formula with the solid mechanics and polish for which the franchise has become famous.

That doesn't mean that Blackout has won the battle royale melee just for showing up, though. Yes, developer Treyarch has made a lot of great improvements to things players are used to seeing in PUBG, Fortnite, H1Z1, and others, but it's by no means perfect. Blackout relies heavily on players' existing knowledge of other battle royale games, for instance. It introduces a lot of new systems without giving much explanation about how they work, like other battle royale games, without acknowledging that with its huge audience, it's probably introducing many players to the genre for the first time. And it's still following the lead of the games that have come before it.

Blackout is a fun mode with a lot to love. The question is, can it last, especially as more and more developers chase the battle royale trend? Here are five ways that Treyarch could improve Blackout to help it become the last battle royale game standing.

Make It Easier For New Players To Learn The Game

The great thing about Call of Duty games, and one of the things that's helped make the franchise so enduring and popular, is that they're generally very easy to pick up and play. Hopping into a standard Deathmatch game in any Call of Duty doesn't require too much background knowledge for reasonably seasoned players. You don't need to know the pros and cons of every gun, for example, to be a solid fighter, because the game provides you with loadouts that make it easy to get a sense of what works for you and what doesn't.

By its very nature, the battle royale genre upends this thinking. It's inherently a more complex concept. Spending time trying out new equipment comes at the high price, since matches are longer and more involved. In any given game, you need to know where to deploy or try to deploy; what equipment you actually need to survive and to fight; what "circle collapses" are and how they work; and how to actually engage enemies. Yet Blackout gives very little information or explanation to new players about the mode and how it works. Call of Duty has the power to bring a huge number of people to the battle royale genre yet squanders it by chasing the audience of players who already play those kinds of games. It's a huge missed opportunity.

No Caption Provided

Make Blackout More Accessible For The Less Hardcore

Continuing the last point, the folks at Treyarch could stand to try to make Blackout clearer and more accessible beyond the first couple of matches. Most of the games in the battle royale genre can already be tough to break into and understand. Not only are there things new players have to learn basically with zero assistance when they start these games, but these games are full of intricate systems and mechanics whose uses and benefits aren't very clear, even when you've built up some experience in the game.

Blackout is already a little better than most games at getting you acclimated. Hovering the cursor over weapons and equipment on the inventory screen gives players some (very brief) insights into their types, uses, strengths, and weaknesses. But you'll learn little or nothing about things like just how useful adding grips to your gun can be, or what differences to expect between 5.56 and .45 ammo. Some players and streamers even take to Reddit and YouTube to figure out all the little details about how guns, armor, and equipment in these games work--and that level of dedication inherently leaves more casual players, who don't have the time to research bullet drop or recoil reduction, on the outs. Blackout has the opportunity to make a more inviting battle royale game that's easier to understand, no matter whether you play one match a week or 50.

Audio Needs An Overhaul

A key part of battle royale is sound, especially when playing solo. Players are alone on the a vast island in Blackout, with only their wits and whatever they can scavanage, and often they can rely only on their senses to locate other players and protect themselves. In most battle royale games, sound is more important than just about anything else, because hearing other players walking, driving vehicles, or fighting one another is often the only information you can get about where they are and whether you're in danger.

Blackout currently seems to have two problems with audio. First, the sound in Blackout can be frustrating when you're relying on it. Your own footsteps and actions are very loud, while sounds from other players can be excruciating to hear and pin down. This does make the Awareness perk, which boosts your ability to hear sounds from other players, a lot more valuable, but it shouldn't be quite so hard to hear who's sneaking up on you in the first place.

On top of that, other players have complained about issues in which sound doesn't always work correctly in Blackout, or comes out of the wrong speaker or headphone channel; a player might be approaching you from the left, but you're hearing it coming from the right, for instance. That's an element that needs to be fixed in Blackout if it's going to have longevity. Even without focusing on a major problem like that, though, audio could use some work in the future to make it more viable for players to use their senses to survive.

No Caption Provided

More Zombies!

Blackout sets itself apart from the rest of the battle royale genre with a lot of little Call of Duty-type elements--like the addition of undead enemies carried over from the Zombies mode. In certain areas, your sneaking and looting can be halted by zombies popping up and trying to murder you. Right now, though, you could play several matches of Blackout and never come across a zombie. Even if you did, you'd likely never really have a need to be afraid of them, since they're easily avoided and not especially dangerous. Zombies in Blackout are little more than a novelty, but they could be a lot more.

Just simply putting zombies in more locations would instantly create a totally different battle royale dynamic, creating a middle ground between existing battle royale and Call of Duty's Zombies mode. We saw something in this vein with the Blackout beta, in which Treyarch included a zombie boss character players could encounter, and take down, during matches. Treyarch could get even more creative with zombies; the developer could add them to popular locations that see the most players at the start of every match, while smaller, more hidden locations could be safer, changing up players' incentives when they first start a match. Or the number of zombies filling the map could be more reactive to where players die. Zombie populations could climb as the circle closes, or they could pick up speed and strength as it tightens, making being caught outside the circle even more harrowing than it already is.

There are a lot of possibilities to make zombies a bigger part of the Blackout experience, even if those possibilities are relegated to additional game type options separate from the standard Blackout competition.

Lead, Don't Follow

Blackout does a great job of taking the existing battle royale formula and improving upon it. Perks, weapon selection, improved mechanics, zombies, and streamlined gameplay are all great additions that make playing Blackout familiar yet different. But they all also feel like somewhat superfluous renovations to someone else's building. Blackout is very similar to the current top battle royale titles, and because of that, it feels like it's chasing the current leaders, rather than searching for a path of its own.

Blackout has identified some of the problems of other battle royale titles and fixed them, while also putting a bit of a Call of Duty spin on the whole idea. Going forward, however, Call of Duty needs to do more than just turn out a Call of Duty version of PUBG. What exact shape that might take is tough to guess at, but in a field that's quickly filling up with battle royale options, as well as copycats and knockoffs, it's going to take more than polish and improvements for Blackout to keep players invested long-term.

New Overwatch PTR Update Makes Major Changes To Four Heroes; Here Are The Patch Notes

By Jordan Ramée on Oct 24, 2018 09:34 pm

Blizzard has announced a new update is available for testing on the Overwatch Public Test Region (PTR). The PTR is PC only, but the changes that end up working are also made available on Xbox One and PS4 when they go live in the main game.

The new update makes several major changes to Mercy, Reaper, Symmetra, and Roadhog. The cost of Mercy's Ultimate is lowered by 15% and her healing per second is increased from 50 to 60, making her a more valuable healer. The spread pattern of Reaper's shotguns has been made more consistent and the amount of health he gains from The Reaping ability has been raised, which increases his offensive potential in head-on fights. Symmetra's primary fire beam charges 20% faster, raising her damage output significantly.

Roadhog has the largest changes in the new update. His Chain Hook starts cooling down as soon as it's used and greatly reduces his victim's speed. The spread pattern on Roadhog's Scrap Gun has also been adjusted so both his primary and secondary fire deal more consistent damage. The knockback velocity of Whole Hog has also been increased so that Roadhog now sends enemies flying. All in all, Roadhog will be able to more consistently trap other players, deal massive damage, and clear them out so that he can do it again.

The full patch notes for the PTR update can be found on Blizzard's website. We've outlined the major points below. Overwatch is available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Fortnite's Halloween Event "Fortnitemares" Confirmed [Update]

By Steve Watts on Oct 24, 2018 09:28 pm

Update 2: Alongside the new Fortnite 6.20 update, Fortnitemares is officially live. This brings with a special new mode along with challenges, including one that has you dance with gargoyles. New challenges will be rolled our regularly, in addition to the standard weekly challenges we normally see on Thursdays.

Update: Epic has released yet another Fortnite event teaser, this one reaffirming that Fortnitemares will begin on Wednesday, October 24. The tweet reads, "The crack of lightning / Illuminates your wins / Arise, dark ones- / The fight begins." It's accompanied by the image below, which doesn't include a look at any of the inevitable new skins we'll get as part of the event.

No Caption Provided

Original Story: Epic has begun teasing an apparent Halloween event for Fortnite, titled Fortnitemares. The event will kick off this Wednesday, October 24 and last through Monday, November 26. It promises "spooky rewards" for completing special Fortnitemares challenges, and uses a variation on the Season 6 theme, "Darkness has risen."

One such reward could be a skin that Epic appears to be teasing through Twitter. Three images have been revealed so far, and at least two of them look like they fit together like a puzzle. The Fortnitemares rewards will probably go through both the Battle Royale and Save the World modes, since Epic has announced that you can win a couple of skins by logging onto Save the World during the event.

That same announcement gave word that the Save the World mode, which had been planned for release as a free-to-play mode this year, won't be switching to free after all. That means to earn any Fortnitemare rewards you'll need to be a founder, but the studio is offering those packages at half-price.

The whole season is fairly creepy, and its biggest Battle Pass reward is the Dire Wolf skin that changes you into more and more of a werewolf as you level it up. We've also seen a slow drip of special Halloween skins. For more Halloween events, check out our Halloween roundup.

Destiny 2 Ascendant Challenge Location Guide: Where To Go And What To Do (Oct. 23-30)

By Chris Pereira on Oct 24, 2018 09:27 pm

The weekly resets for Destiny 2 continue to roll out. As always, post-Forsaken, the latest of these refreshes the Ascendant Challenge that is available from Petra in the Dreaming City. For the second week in a row, we're seeing a repeat of an earlier Ascendant Challenge, and if this pattern holds, we can expect to see them released in the same order they initially debuted in. Below, you'll find a complete guide on where you need to go and what to do to complete this week's bounty to earn Powerful gear.

The Ascendant Challenge always involves you heading through a portal to the Ascendant Plane, but the particulars of what you're doing are entirely different from week to week. To start out, you'll need a consumable item called the Tincture of Queensfoil. With a Tincture in hand, make your way to the Garden of Esila area near the southernmost point of the map, as seen in the image below. Consuming the Tincture will provide you with the Ascendance buff that allows to see a Taken portal that's somewhat hidden on a cliffside. Jump in, and you'll be teleported to the Ascendant Plane's Forfeit Shrine.

Once you're there, you'll have to fend off Taken--or just avoid them--while trying to secure three Arc Charges around the area. Once you pick one up, head toward the center starting area, near the giant Blight ball. Walk into the bright point at the bottom to dunk the charge you're holding. Repeat the process two more times and you'll receive an endless supply of Super energy that will help you to kill all of the remaining Taken in the area. Once they're dealt with, you can complete the bounty (netting you Dark Fragments and Powerful gear) and open a chest.

Given that the bounty (not the chest) offers Powerful gear--a reliable way of increasing your Power level--this is an activity you'll definitely want to take part in once you're able. But bear in mind it is a challenge, so be sure to come prepared. It can be done solo, but having multiple teammates to grab charges and draw the enemies' attention can help immensely.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Companion App Revealed; Here's What It Does

By Oscar Dayus on Oct 24, 2018 08:46 pm

Red Dead Redemption 2's release date is nearly upon us, but the magic date of October 26 will also see the launch of the game's official companion app, publisher Rockstar has confirmed. The app will go live on iOS and Android day-and-date with the main game this Friday.

Essentially, it appears the app will act as a second screen for you to use while playing the game on your PS4 / Xbox One and TV. That means you can look at the map and add waypoints or mark areas of interest all on your iPad, for example. In addition, the app will display "Arthur Morgan's core info and stats in real-time on your device, allowing you to completely remove the in-game HUD from your television should you choose."

Finally, the app contains the full digital game manual, provides stat tracking through Rockstar's social club, and offers an optional digital version of the official Red Dead Redemption 2 guide, presumably for an extra cost.

The game's map leaked just recently, and it appears to contain much of the original Red Dead Redemption's playable area. Flat Iron Lake is visible in the leaked image, as are Tall Trees, Armadillo, and more. Mexico doesn't appear to be included, but there are of course a number of new locations we haven't yet explored.

Rockstar recently released RDR2's launch trailer, which you can watch here. The company has also detailed the first Red Dead Redemption 2 DLC, which will have a period of exclusivity on PS4. New To Netflix For November 2018: Movies, TV, And Originals Coming And Going (US)

By Mat Elfring on Oct 24, 2018 08:45 pm

It's almost time to spend the day gorging yourself on turkey while avoiding the family you're forced to hang out with, and what better way to avoid forced conversation than sitting around the television, watching Netflix, together? November is almost here, and Netflix has revealed what is coming to its service for the next month, as well as what is leaving the subscription service.

Kicking off the month, Netflix is bringing a slew of movies on Thursday, November 1. If you haven't seen it yet, you'll need to watch From Dusk Till Dawn. The 1996 action/horror film is by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino and follows two criminals on the run who take a family in an RV hostage. They all end up at a strip club in Mexico that's filled with vampires. Also coming on the first of the month is Cape Fear, Marvel's Doctor Strange, and Sixteen Candles.

If Netflix's originals are more up your alley, then you're in luck, as there are 46 movies and series coming in November. Most notable is the return of House of Cards, for Season 6, which will be its final season. This time around, Kevin Spacey won't be involved after sexual abuse allegations came out against the House of Cards star. The final season will follow Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) as the President of the United States, which was revealed in the first trailer.

There are plenty of other original series to get excited about as well. Mystery Science Theater 3000 returns for another season to make fun of some terrible, old movies, coming November 22. Also, She-Ra--He-Man's superpowered cousin--is getting a fun and bubbly reboot on November 16. Along with a new collection of The Great British Baking Show on November 9, you'll have a ton to watch.

The full the list for Netflix is below, and make sure to check out what's coming to Hulu and Amazon for the month of November as well.
