Different genres in horror come and go in waves, at times, slashers dominate the theaters, and sometimes, supernatural thrillers are all Hollywood puts out. However, one genre that's been floating around since the late-60s are zombie movies, and 50 years later, they're still a predominant part of horror films. The first zombie movie was White Zombie from 1932, which revolved around Voodoo bringing people back from the dead. Then, in 1959, a zombie-like creature was used in the infamous Plan 9 From Outer Space. However, no one had as big as an impact on the horror sub-genre than the late writer/director George Romero. In 1968, Romero redefined what a zombie is, without ever using the term, in the classic horror movie Night of the Living Dead. It wasn't magic or a voodoo curse that reanimated the dead, it was a disease. While the specifics of what this disease is or how it specifically happened are never fully explained, Romero created a shared universe that gave the audience different perspectives from the same human extinction-level event. Even though Romero passed away, there still may be more films in his zombie cinematic universe. The writer had more projects in development, which we could eventually see on the big screen. However, as of now, there are only six zombie movies from Romero, and here they are, ranked by their scores on Metacritic. Conceptually, Survival of the Dead is a fine idea. It riffs on the tale of the Hatfields and McCoys and puts it into a zombie apocalypse. On an island off the coast of Delaware, two feuding families live. One wants to eradicate the undead while the other wants to keep them caged until a cure is found. Obviously, the two families clash. What's different about Survival from other zombie flicks is that Romero took note from Zombieland--which came out a year prior--and tried to add some humor to the movie. It did not work, and it's wildly considered to be the worst of Romero's zombie movies. Metacritic score: 43 Day of the Dead (1985)
Originally, fans of Romero's work thought the 1985 film would be the last in his zombie line. The weakest of the original "Dead Trilogy," this movie follows scientists and military officers who live safely underground during the zombie apocalypse. There's growing tension between the two groups, and of course, the zombies get into the base. The movie is a bit of drag and doesn't hit home nearly as well as the previous two films. Metacritic score: 60 Diary of the Dead (2007)
Diary of the Dead jumps around in the timeline of Romero's films, going back to the same day as Night of the Living Dead. The movie follows a group of college students making a horror film in the forest. As they're shooting, the zombie apocalypse is starting, and the filmmakers are trying to figure out what's going on in this confusing, new world. Although, critically, it wasn't as well received as Land of the Dead, it was a more cohesive plot. Sure, it retreaded some familiar ground, but it gave us a new perspective to where Romero's universe all started. Metacritic score: 66 Land of the Dead (2005)
If you like being hit over the head, repeatedly, with allegories, then Land of the Dead may be up your alley. In this movie, zombies have taken over the world, and the rich live in towers in an enclosed city, while the poor live on the ground. Tensions grow between the classes, and in addition to all that, zombies have gotten smarter and invade the city. This was the last "big" Romero zombie movie to hit theaters. It was fine, but the evolution of the zombies in the movie was exceptionally polarizing for fans of Romero's work. Metacritic score: 71 Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Romero's zombie followup came ten years after the original. In this legendary horror flick, a group of survivors during the zombie apocalypse make their home in the best fortified structure they can find, a mall. The movie takes a bizarre, yet amazing, turn as it focuses on the survivors, living inside a mall, and the threat of zombies doesn't feel real anymore. That is until they find a way in and start eating everyone. While Metacritic has this scored lower than Night of the Living Dead, many people believe Dawn of the Dead to be a far better movie. Metacritic score: 71 Night of the Living Dead (1968)
The movie that started it all, Night of the Living Dead, received the highest score on Metacritic. In Romero's original movie, a group of survivors during the start of the zombie apocalypse, band together in a farmhouse in hopes of riding it all out. Of course, you can't ride this out, and it becomes a "kill or be killed" scenario for those trying to escape the undead hordes. One really cool thing about Night of the Living Dead was that it featured a black lead character (Duane Jones), which was rare at the time. This movie is still the standard for the rules of zombies in horror films, 50 years later. Metacritic score: 88

Shirley Jackson's classic novel The Haunting of Hill House is one of the most famous ghost stories ever written, and the 1963 movie adaptation, The Haunting, is widely considered as one of the best horror films of all time. So when it was announced that Gerald's Game director Mike Flanagan would be directing a new adaptation for Netflix--and that it would be ten hours long--there was some doubt about whether a new version was really needed (especially when you consider the terrible 1999 movie). However, Flanagan's version is a loose adaptation, taking the setting and character names and creating his own spin on this classic haunted house tale. The resulting show, which you can watch now in its entirety on Netflix, is a moving, complex story that spans decades and is as much a character study and family drama as it is a horror story. Exceptional performances, powerful writing, and stylish, inventive direction combine to create one of 2018's best shows, from any genre. But while the dramatic content is as strong as anything out there right now, at heart, Flanagan is a horror filmmaker. His previous movies--which also include Hush, Oculus, and Ouija: Origin of Evil-- are very much part of the genre, and he has picked up many fans for his ability to conjure huge scares alongside intelligently-told, character-driven storylines. The Haunting of Hill House is no different. As the Crane family come to terms with the effect that Hill House has had upon them over the years, Flanagan keeps the scares coming throughout. And while the pacing is sometimes slow, he makes sure that we never get too comfortable, using a variety of classic horror techniques to make us jump, shiver, and look away. So here are our picks of the scariest moments from The Haunting of Hill House, with many spoilers ahead. Some of them are old-fashioned jump scares, some are moments filled with dread, and some are as sad as they are scary. Let's enter the Red Room... 27. The Figure At The Door (Episode 8)
Steven and his wife Leigh are having a serious talk with their doctor about their difficulty in conceiving a child. Unfortunately, Steven is somewhat distracted by the a figure watching them from behind the glass door to the doctor's office--a figure that seems to be one of his sisters. 26. Old Lady Reflection (Episode 4)
The house has an old-fashioned intercom system, which basically look like trumpets that connect via pipes to other rooms. Luke is talking to Nell through one when he suddenly sees the face of an old lady ghost reflected back at him. 25. Fan Meets Hand (Episode 7)
The Haunting of Hill House is much more about scares than gore, but there are a couple of gruesome moments. One comes in Episode 7, while Hugh and Steven are working in basement of the house, trying to fix the mold problem. Hugh asks his son to unplug the fan they are using, but seconds later it slices into his hand. Steven claims he unplugged it--and while we never actually see him do that, we know that the house is the true culprit. 24. Escaping The House (Episode 1)
Hugh carries young Steven through the house, as they make their escape to the car outside. At this point we don't know why they are running and why Steven is told to keep his eyes shut, but the fleeting sight of what seems to be Olivia, chasing after them, is chilling. 23. Hands On Nell (Episode 3)
Theo makes the mistake of laying her psychic hands upon Nell's corpse. What she discovers is not good, and she falls to floor letting out perhaps the most horrifying scream of the entire show. As she tells Shirley in Episode 9: "I felt nothing. Just nothing. And it spread everywhere in me until I couldn't feel anything anymore." 22. The Bug In The Cat (Episode 2)
One of the kittens that young Shirley finds in the toolshed dies, so her parents organise a feline funeral. As their daughter is saying a few words, the kitten suddenly starts breathing. Shirley takes the animal out of the box and holds it, only to see a giant bug crawl out of its mouth. 21. Future Twins (Episode 9)
As the house continues to consume Olivia's mind, she seeks refuge in the 'reading room'--which we later learn is her interpretation of the Red Room. But instead she finds herself in the morgue, many years in the future, where she sees adult Nell laid out on a gurney, and Luke on the floor, in a pool of vomit and blood with a needle in his arm. 20. Crawling Olivia (Episode 7)
Shortly after realising that Luke has taken Theo's car and Shirley's wallet, Theo and Hugh find that Shirley's model of the ForeverHouse has been smashed to bits. As Theo bends down to pick up the pieces, the mutilated corpse of Olivia emerges from around the corner, crawling towards her. 19. Wheelchair Boy (Episode 6)
The hunt for Nell around the house during the storm gives us a glimpse at several of the ghosts that haunt its rooms and hallways. Particularly unnerving is this young lad, a pasty-faced child in old clothes who wheels slowly and eerily past Olivia. 18. Button-eye Nell (Episode 6)
Poor Nell can't get much peace, even in death. While the family bicker around her in the funeral home, someone--or something--has placed buttons on her eyes. The culprit is never revealed, but everyone sees it so it's not a spectral hallucination. And remember, in Episode 4, Olivia gives young Nell a box of "cool old buttons." 17. Poppy Appears (Episode 8)
As Luke enters Hill House for the last time, he sees Olivia standing in front of him. She reaches out for him, and he says "mom." Suddenly the ghost of Poppy Hill, the 1920s flapper girl who was married to William Hill and went insane, appears behind him and grabs him with both hands. 16. Bent-Neck Watching (Episode 5)
The figure of the Bent-Neck Lady has haunted Nell since childhood, and at the end of Episode 5 we discover who she really is. But before we get to that, we have this terrifying sequence in which Nell, paralysed on her bed, first witnesses her husband Arthur drop dead in front of her, and then sees the Bent-Neck Lady watching her, silhouetted in front of the window in her room. 15. Behind The Wall (Episode 7)
Determined to find the rats that he thinks are scratching behind the wall in the basement, Hugh pulls away at the ancient brick. What he finds is not a rat, but the long-dead remains of William Hill, who bricked himself up in there back in 1948. And the scratching sounds? That was poor old William, trying to get out again... 14. Shirley's Face (Episode 10)
Shirley dreams that she is in the funeral home. Only it's not Nell's body in the casket--it's her own. Suddenly "dead" Shirley sits up and starts to claw at her face, pulling her eyes out and ripping at the skin to reveal blackened, rotting flesh underneath. 13. The Door Is Open (Episode 9)
The door to the Red Room is finally open. "You found the key!" exclaims a young Nell. "You want to know the secret?" asks her mom. "We were the key." So, Olivia leads Nell, Luke, and Abigail into the room for a "tea" party. There's something truly unsettling about this scene--you just know bad things are about to happen. 12. Where's Nelly? (Episode 6)
As the storm engulfs Hill House and the Crane family gather to get their flashlights working, Theo and Nell stand nearby, holding hands. Until the camera moves back, and we see that Theo is suddenly standing alone, and Nell has completely vanished. Her sudden return later in the episode is no less chilling: "I was right here. I was screaming and shouting and none of you could see me." 11. Bloody Olivia (Episode 3)
In this episode, we see how Theo's power of touch both affects her life as a child and adult. As she sits outside the house of a child abuser she has reported, she remembers when Olivia touched her hand as a girl, bringing a terrifying sudden vision of her mom's bloody corpse. 10. Runny Egg Eyes (Episode 10)
Luke dreams about seeing Joey again, after she ran off with the money he got from Steve. She torments him about getting high before referring back to the disturbing rehab monologue the former soldier delivered at the start of Episode 4. "You can see the little girl," Joey tells Luke. "The little girl with the runny egg eyes." And right on cue, her eyeballs melt down her face. 9. Cat's Eyes (Episode 2)
Sadly for poor Shirley, the rest of Episode 2's toolshed cat litter are not at all well. With all the other kittens dead, the only one that is just about breathing suddenly opens his eyes to reveal two horribly bulbous, maggot-white orbs. 8. Grave Encounter (Episode 7)
Luke kneels by Nell's grave at her funeral, telling her that he is sorry. He looks and sees his sister, as the Bent-Neck Lady, standing over him. She snarls "Don't!" and suddenly Luke is grabbed by a hand from the grave. A ghostly Nell pulls at him, imploring "Stay." 7. Count To Seven (Episode 4)
Luke waits for Steven on the street, feeling the overpowering physical effects of Nell's death on him. He starts to see the ghost of William Hill, the tall, bowler-hatted former owner of the house, who bricked himself up inside its walls. As Luke starts to do the count to seven that he and Nell used as kids to keep them safe, Hill slides closer and closer to him. 6. Leigh's Baby (Episode 10)
As Steven sits with his pregnant wife Leigh, she starts to talk to him in stronger and stronger words, accusing him of being a "plastic parasite." Then she lifts up her dress to reveal her pregnant belly, which begins to bulge and crack. "If she eats me from the inside and I burst like a blister, will you lose your mind?" Leigh asks before her face darkens and distorts. 5. Nell's Dead (Episode 1)
Episode 1 ends with older Hugh telling Steven the news that Nell is dead. So, why is she standing in Steven's kitchen? And why is she making that horrifically scary face? 4. Basement Ghoul (Episode 3)
In one of the show's scariest sequences, young Luke finds himself trapped in the house's basement after he convinces Shirley to activate the dumb waiter with him inside. While he shouts for his sister to rescue him, and with his flashlight flickering on and off, Luke sees something emerge from behind a barrel at the back of the room. It's the skeletal remains of William Hill, trapped in the basement for decades, coming toward him. 3. "Drink Your Tea." (Episode 9)
Abigail drinks Olivia's tea, which she has laced with rat poison. She begins to choke, while Nell and Luke look on, horrified. "She's having a nightmare," Olivia tells her kids. "Drink your tea." It's a terrifying, sickening sequence, made even worse in retrospect, when we discover that Abigail is not Luke's imaginary friend, but the Dudleys' very real daughter. 2. Bent-Neck Falling (Episode 5)
This incredible scene happens right at the end of Episode 5, where it is revealed that the Bent-Neck Lady is in fact Nell herself. We see her hang herself in the house, and then her body drops on the noose into every scene we had previously seen the Bent-Neck Lady in. Nell haunts Theo, Luke, herself as an adult, and then finally herself as a child. It's truly spine-chilling. 1. Backseat Driver (Episode 8)
An intense, angry conversation between Shirley and Theo as they drive home from the funeral is interrupted by the sudden appearance of ghostly Nell, who lurches forward from the back of the car, screaming horrifically, perhaps in an attempt to stop them heading to Hill House. The car skids off the road and Theo jumps out, running from this terrifying vision. She might have scared them witless, but Nell's appearance succeeds in allowing her sisters to forgive each other.

Red Dead Redemption 2 presents players with what it easily Rockstar's most dynamic open-world adventure to date. Featuring a number of sophisticated systems and countless NPC characters to interact with, there are all sorts of encounters that await you in the game's expansive wild west setting. However, with a game of this scale, there are bound to be features that aren't stated clearly, even during the opening hours that serve as a tutorial of sorts. We've come up with a list of details and tips that Red Dead Redemption 2 keeps somewhat hidden from players, which we found from our time experimenting with the many mechanics at work. Though much of overarching gameplay pillars are explained in the abstract during the game's tutorials and relevant missions, there always seems to be a bit more information that's set aside for later. And more often than not, you're bound to uncover these details when you least expect it. We've got much more info and coverage on Red Dead Redemption 2 in the works. Savor The Story
While the main story in Red Dead Redemption 2 has many exciting and heartfelt moments, we recommend indulging in as much of the side content and activities as you can before tackling the next major event. Over the course of the game, you'll see changes to the gang's camp, and several characters, including Charles, Lenny, and Javier, will have some missions for you to handle. These side-quests show up as white markers on your map--with the main missions showing up as yellow--and can lead to great rewards or interesting encounters for you to take part in. Unfortunately, several of these diversions are only available for a limited time, so make sure to do them as soon as you can. Some of the game's most heartfelt and humorous events can come from these missions, which you'll miss out on if you focus on the story. So take some time away from the main plot and chat with your comrades--you'll be glad you did. Look To The Skies
When you're exploring the wilderness, you'll likely see smoke trails from campfire at a distance. These serve as an indicator for points of interests in the area, so heading to the source can open up unique encounters with the game's many strangers and traveling vagabonds. Most often the lone individuals you can find are friendly, even giving you supplies and tips on some locations you should keep an eye on, but other encounters can lead to violent stand-offs with rival gangs or disgruntled travellers. Regardless, there will always be something interesting to uncover once you reach a campsite. Weight Watchers
When you're living a life as an outlaw--where sleeping in the dirt and getting into intense gunfights are the norm--it can be easy to lose track of Arthur's personal disposition. This becomes apparent when you notice that you're taking more damage than normal. Early on, the game introduces you to the concept of building up your health, stamina, and dead eye cores. However, depending on what Arthur eats, how often he does so, and what sort of physical exercise he gets, his base stats and cores will see some changes. These gains or losses are reflected by three distinct body types; average, underweight, and overweight, all of which have their own unique pros and cons.
When you're of average weight, your health and stamina cores will stay even. However if you find yourself underweight, you'll take slightly more damage, but gain a boost to stamina to compensate. If Arthur eats often and gets less exercise, which includes running, swimming, and getting into fist fights with the local ruffians, he'll become overweight, resulting in less stamina but an increase in damage absorption. Though you can keep track of Arthur's physical status in the Player menu, you can also watch Arthur during his idle animations. Depending on what his weight is, his posture and demeanor will adjust to reflect his current build.
With all that said, Red Dead Redemption 2 is all about letting you build out the protagonist how you see fit. So if you want a skinny or plump character, then you go ahead and make sure Arthur lives his best, most indulgent life. High Risk, High Rewards
Whether it's from ransacking a homestead or scavenging from dead animals, you'll likely stumble upon some items that the local merchants will refuse to take off your hands. These items can fill up your satchel fast--giving you the impression that they may better placed in the dirt-but they may fetch a high price from a select set of merchants happy enough to buy them from you. To offload these items of dubious origins, you'll need to visit a Fence--essentially a black market dealer who sells and trades some of Red Dead Redemption 2's most valuable items.
In a variety of locations across the map--including Rhodes, Emerald Ranch, and Saint Denis--these merchants can be found in their own shops, tucked away from the popular areas of town. These Fences will also sell support items, throwable weapons, and recipes, and can also craft rare talismans and trinkets from Legendary Animal materials, which offer unique perks to Arthur's main cores. Moreover, there are also Fences that deal primarily in stolen wagons and horses, which also yield a solid cash return. So when you arrive to a new area, make sure you know where to find the local shady dealer. Do A Barrel Roll
During combat, there may come a time where you need to get out of the line of fire fast. While aiming your weapon, press the action button (Square on PS4, or X on Xbox One) to perform an evasive dodge. Depending on which direction you hold the control stick while pressing, Arthur will dive or roll away from danger. While this can evoke some flashbacks to the Max Payne series' iconic gun battles, the dodge roll is purely an evasive maneuver--so no shooting while diving, unfortunately. When Horses Attack
Red Dead Redemption 2 is essentially a Wild West Grand Theft Auto, but hijacking a new transport will take a bit more effort than simply pressing a button. The horses in Red Dead Redemption 2 can be very temperamental and get stirred up very easily--especially in the presence of predators in the wilderness. When approaching a new steed, you'll need to calm it down in order to safely get near it. Horses aren't afraid to defend themselves, and if you try approaching a wild mare or someone else's animal from its backside, it won't hesitate in readying a fierce kick to keep you at bay. Your Guns, Your Style
The members of the Van der Linde gang are all capable gunslingers, and this is especially true of Arthur. With some impressive handling of all sorts of firearms, which includes pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns, the main character isn't shy about showing off more of his particular style. While at a weapon shop, you can customize your weapons in a number of ways, including adding new barrels, paint work, wrapping--to decrease degradation--and even place some stylish decals on your firearms. Though some of these customization options won't offer any tactical advantage whatsoever, they can go a long way in helping you define your own take on Arthur and his legend. And if you really want to show off some flair after an intense gunfight, double tap the holster button (L1 on PS4, LB on Xbox One) to put your pistol away in style. Relive The Glory Days
Much like the original Red Dead Redemption, the prequel features a number of main missions that will show off many exciting and emotional moments. But in Red Dead Redemption 2, you're given the ability to replay these pivotal moments and re-experience the game's most interesting encounters at any time. After the end of each mission, you'll receive a ranking on your performance based on how long it took and whether or not you completed the side objectives. If you feel you can do better, or if you just want to see a badass moment again, you can do redo the mission by going into the Progress sub-menu and selecting the Story option. You'll see your current place in the main plot, along with a listing of previously completed missions from each chapter, which can be replayed at your leisure. Hunting The Best Game
Though the hunting gameplay in Red Dead Redemption 2 takes many cues from the original, it now requires a far more thoughtful and careful approach. In addition to the 178 animals featuring their own backgrounds and unique methods to take them down in a hunt, the wildlife comes in three different ranks--poor, good, and perfect. While you'll often get the basics from any animals regardless of quality, you'll need to ensure that you're hunting above average prey in order to get the best pelts possible. To see whether the animal you're hunting is worth the effort, make sure to study it at a distance first, which will give you clues on how best to hunt it. After doing so, you'll see a set of stars next to its name on the HUD. If you find yourself on the trail of an animal with only one star, you should look elsewhere in the area for something better. A More Immersive Experience
If you're itching for a more personal Red Dead Redemption 2, you can adjust the game and its look to offer a more involved experience that will keep you on your toes. Along with the game's first-person view mode, which allows players to experience the entire game in this perspective, you'll also be able to customize aspects of the HUD and gameplay, stripping away most on-screen indicators and tweaking the controls to your liking. With no HUD, you'll have to pay attention to more details in the environment, as well as remember the clues that NPCs give you. Though if you still want to use an aid to get around, Rockstar has a companion app for Red Dead Redemption 2 to offer players additional help. Takedown The Big Targets With Ease
When hunting, you may find some larger targets that are more difficult to get a bead on. If you're having a difficult time getting a clear shot or keeping your prey from moving, you can always try lassoing it up. Despite this going counter to stalking and hunting prey the old-fashioned way, it's still a surprisingly effective way to get a hold of your target. If you're able to get close enough it, you'll also be to use your hunting knife to give it a quick death, which counts as a clean kill. However, this is only effective on medium to larger sized animals, as smaller game will be able to slip out of the rope easily. Showing Your True Colors
In Red Dead Redemption 2, every choice you make with Arthur feeds back into the game's overarching Honor system. Depending on the type of character you play, whether as a likeable outlaw or a ruthless gunslinger, you'll witness changes to Arthur's behavior and to the game's presentation. If you're of high honor, not only will you receive some discounts from stores, the tone of your journal entries will be more upbeat, and the style of killcams you'll get will be more in the style of old-school westerns. If you're a particularly decent fellow, and want to make some solid gains on the honor system, take a stroll down the street in a populated area of town and greet the locals. You'll quickly earn some positive vibes from the townsfolk.
However, if you find yourself playing more of a cutthroat, kill-cams will be more violent, your responses to NPCs will be more snide, characters will always be on the lookout for you, and the tone of your journal will be more cynical and off-putting. Each side has its own set of advantages, and it's all up to you in how you want others to view Arthur. Look After Your Loot
As you're exploring the wilderness on your horse, it's all but inevitable that you'll take a nasty spill. While these brutal wipeouts can often be humorous, they can result in some serious consequences. In addition to causing harm to both Arthur and his mare, you'll also drop all items that placed on the back of your trusty steed--which temporarily holds pelts and small game. This won't be an issue that often, but there may be some cases where you'll crash out on a hill or in a rocky place, which will make it easy to lose track of those precious supplies. This can be especially devastating if you spent a great deal of time hunting animals, only to have lost the pelt and bodies when crashing head-first into a tree. So if you crash your horse, make sure to collect yourself and all your belongings before you ride off. Taking In The Sights
Red Dead Redemption 2's cinematic camera mode can offer you the chance to view the sweeping vistas of the game's world in a different light. With a dynamic camera, you'll get to see Arthur and his crew ride across the landscape with some breathtaking sights in the backdrop. However, controlling the character during the cinematic mode can be somewhat problematic, thanks to the shifting camera. Thankfully, Rockstar included a subtle feature to make movement much easier in the cinematic mode. By holding down the X/A button in this special camera mode, Arthur and his horse will stick to the trail, automatically turning and making corners when needed. If you have a particular destination set on the map, either for a story mission or a waypoint, the game will guide Arthur to that location as well. Prime Fishing Time
When taking up the fishing activity, there may be some cases where you won't get many bites. While it's important to make sure you're using the correct bait and lures for the location you're in, and that your fishing technique is correct, another factor to consider is the current time in the day. Depending on when you decide to head out, you'll see a different amount of activity in the lake, pond, or river. To get the best results during a fishing activity, try to stick with early morning and afternoon time in-game. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is a bit of a different beast from previous games in the series. The classic Call of Duty multiplayer modes return, but the game is far more focused on multiplayer than ever before, shedding the single-player campaign that previous entries have offered. Not only that, but there's a completely new mode called Blackout. Those familiar with battle royale games such as Fortnite and PUBG will feel right at home in this 100-player mode. If you spend most of your time with Call of Duty games, chances are that Blackout will be incredibly foreign to you. After all, it's a much slower-paced affair compared to the more frenetic speed of Call of Duty's standard multiplayer modes. If you want to come out on top in Blackout, you need to ditch many of the strategies and behaviors that once earned you victory in previous games. And even if you are a battle royale veteran, Black Ops 4 still has a wealth of its own unique mechanics and systems that you'll need to get accustomed to. In this feature, we highlight a number of useful tips to know before jumping into Blackout. If you've had a chance to play the beta, you may be familiar with some of what we're about to discuss. Developer Treyarch has added and adjusted a few aspects of the game since, so be sure to read ahead. Getting to the ground first is one of the most important things you need to master. You'll start the match in a helicopter that flies across the island. Unlike in other battle royale games, the way to drop down precisely where you want--and quickly--is to trade off between speed and distance. When you exit the helicopter, head straight down. You know you're reaching max speed when your character's arms tuck in. The right side of screen shows both your speed in meters per second and downward facing arrows. You want to hit three down triangles and then start flying up and down in long, wave-shaped movements towards your chosen landing zone. Landing Zone Tips
Landing in remote places is a huge gamble, but doing so in a small unmarked village can be even worse than a larger area. If a team has landed before you, then you have nowhere to run. Larger areas may attract more players but typically have more buildings to explore. It's also easier to get to a separate building where you can gather equipment. A great example of this is landing at Turbine, where there are several large warehouses. However, certain areas, such as Firing Range and Nuketown Island, attract an especially large number of players. Don't go there unless you're confident in your skills. Wingsuit Essentials
When you jump out of the helicopter, you'll use your wingsuit to land. You might not know, however, that it can be deployed at any time during a match. It's useful to do so when jumping off tall places, such as the Dam or Lighthouse. This is helpful in making a hasty escape when things go south. You can deploy the wingsuit by running and then holding the jump button. Zombie Rewards (Be Careful!)
Going to zombie-infested areas, such as Asylum or any of the beams of light on the map, can get you high-level weapons and armor. There is a chance that a super zombie will show up; killing it yields even better rewards. However, the ensuing gunfire will likely draw a lot of attention in the process. Alternatively, if you'd rather avoid engaging with zombies, you can always ambush teams trying to nab weapons and equipment from zombies and steal their stuff instead. Avoid Buildings In The Final Circle (Unless You Got A Trophy System)
Don't hide in buildings during the final moments of a match when the battle area is at its smallest; you're likely to get killed by grenades, cluster bombs, or any other explosive throwables. Though, if you have the trusty Trophy System, you can just zap any incoming explosive right out of the air. Regardless, it's a good rule of thumb to avoid camping out in buildings during this moment of the match. Use Vehicles Wisely
Blackout has a good mix of transportation options. There are helicopters, boats, ATVs, and heavy trucks. But be careful; driving these noisy vehicles can give away your location, especially as the map shrinks over the course of the match. Where To Find Yourself Some Helicopters
Helicopters are incredibly useful if you need to get to a safety zone quickly. There several scattered across the map; you can find them are the Construction Site, Estates, Turbine, Factory, Firing Range, Nuketown Island, and Cargo Docks. Hellion Salvo Is Your Friend
If players in vehicles are giving you trouble, then seek out the Hellion Salvo rocket launcher, which can lock onto them with ease. If you find yourself about to be on the receiving end of the Hellion Salvo, try to break line of sight as fast as possible or abandon ship. Support And Scavenge
When playing in a squad, Blackout has plenty of options available for you to help out your team, such as sharing ammo with teammates from the inventory menu. Some actions in the game can even be performed without fully going into your menus. You can use the D-pad to scroll through a downed enemy's inventory, and with a single button press you can equip a weapon attachment from the ground without going into your inventory. Practice in Solo Training (And Even Standard Multiplayer)
Despite not having a single-player campaign, Black Ops 4 does have a solo training mode with Specialist videos and a brief cinematic story. Doing this will unlock multiplayer characters for Blackout, as well as teach you how to use many of the gadgets that appear as pickups in battle royale. Black Ops 4's standard multiplayer mode also offers some learning opportunities that can benefit you in Blackout, as you can familiarize yourself with weapons and gadgets that fit your playstyle in a more contained combat space. Using Specialist Weapons In Blackout
As stated, many of the specialist weapons can be found all across the map in Blackout. Here are some pointers on a few that may not easy to understand out the gate. - Recon's Sensor Dart has a huge vertical cone and is best fired into elevated places where it is hard to spot.
- Battery's Cluster Grenade sticks to surfaces and shoots mini bombs straight out from where it lands, like a shotgun blast. It is intended to be used to reach around corners. It's very dangerous to throw a cluster grenade on a wall or at an enemy right in front of you.
- Torque's Razor Wire is meant to be placed under windows Rainbow Six Siege-style to trap vaulting opponents, as opposed to obvious places out in the open. Torque's Barricade can also be found in Blackout and is helpful cover that can be deployed when caught in the open.

The best part of any geek or pop culture convention is the amazing cosplay efforts of its talented attendees, and PAX Aus 2018 was no exception. In this gallery, you'll find a small collection of the best costumes we were lucky enough to stumble across and capture. Blizzard costumes continue to be ever-impressive and popular, with plenty of Diablo and Overwatch alternate costumes being represented. There were also a number of people turning out to represent Bowsette, the fan-favourite fictional Nintendo character, as well as Connor from Detroit: Become Human--we saw way more than we were able to photograph! And as always, Square Enix and Nintendo costumes continued to be crowd-pleasing staples. Our personal favorites were the Kakariko Crew (pictured), who turned up to raise awareness of the campaign to include Waluigi in Super Smash Bros. PC gaming has been around for decades, but as technology grows, so too do the possibilities! Many, many games come out on PC--especially Steam--at a pretty fast pace, so it can be hard to know what to play. There's also a wide variety of genres to keep track of, plus all those games you buy during the Steam sale. To help you out, we went back a few years and rounded up the best PC-exclusive games. For this feature, we included some (but not all) of the PC games that received a score of 8 or higher on GameSpot, with priority going to games that were nominated for awards at the end of their release years. To narrow the scope further, we only picked games that released in 2013 or later--sorry, CS:GO. Many of the games on this list are relatively new, including Frostpunk, Into the Breach, and Divinity: Original Sin II, and a lot of them are among the best released on the platform. You can spend tons of hours in classic CRPG-style games or immerse yourself in more narrative-driven indie adventure games. Suffice it to say, there's plenty of high-quality options available to you. The release of the Nintendo Switch marked the beginning of a new generation for Nintendo. After the lukewarm reception of the Wii U, many were beginning to wonder if the company would be able to survive in today's console market. However, it defied all expectations with its hybrid console/handheld console. Alongside the Switch's release was the universally praised The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, giving it the killer app it needed to quickly rise to the top of console sales charts and dramatically increase Nintendo's revenue. In the year since its launch, there has been no shortage of amazing games coming, from huge first-party games like Mario and Splatoon to indie darlings like Owlboy and Celeste. There's even great third-party games, like Octopath Traveler and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. The library only seems to be expanding and improving with every consecutive release. In this feature, we're taking a look back at the best Switch games so far. This includes games that have received a score of 8 or higher on GameSpot since the console's release, as well as reviews for new games and updates to reviews of older games that were ported to Switch. The list only includes games we've awarded an 8/10 or higher. We've also limited the gallery based on console exclusivity, so you'll see a few games in this gallery that are also available on PC or PS Vita. This means games that originally released for PS2 or PS3 and launched again on the PS4 without any additional content (like Beyond: Two Souls) are not included. There's always an abundance of new games that come out every month. Some are incredibly big-budget releases that we've been eagerly waiting years for while others are smaller, more surprising independent titles that no one sees coming. In addition, there's plenty of other games found near and around those releases. You get games from mid-sized publishers and even the occasional remaster or re-release of gaming's most definitive adventures. There's a lot of exciting games coming out in the future. We recently got to see debut gameplay of Cyberpunk 2077, and we already can't wait for it. In addition, Nintendo did a Direct presentation and announced 22 upcoming Switch games. With so many games coming out year-round, it can be difficult keeping track of what's worth playing. To help keep you in the know, we've compiled all the best new games you absolutely need to play right now. The point of this feature is to focus on the latest and greatest games, so the choices you'll find here have been limited to the past couple months. What you'll find in the slides ahead are games rated 7 or higher by GameSpot. However, you'll occasionally find some lower-rated ones that have been chosen to be included by an incredibly passionate member of our team. We won't hesitate to highlight experiences some members of our staff absolutely love--even if there are others who may not agree. The games included in this feature are ones we personally believe you should check out in some capacity. Here's a brief taste of what you'll see. It is about Arthur, too, but as the lens through which you view the gang, his very personal, very messy story supports a larger tale. Some frustrating systems and a predictable mission structure end up serving that story well, though it does take patience to get through them and understand why. Red Dead Redemption 2 is an excellent prequel, but it's also an emotional, thought-provoking story in its own right, and it's a world that is hard to leave when it's done." Thronebreaker interweaves Gwent into its story in smart ways that keep it from feeling like an intrusive method for resolving combat situations, helping you learn its intricate systems while engaging in unique quests and rulesets. "Even when its flaws are obvious, Chasm is a well-crafted adventure, and during the more than 12 hours I spent playing through my first time, I got lost only once. The new Partner Party, River Survival, and Sound Stage modes add enjoyable alternatives to Mario Party mode--which at least returns to its competitive roots. And even if the unique character dice blocks don't shake up Super Mario Party's four boards enough to give Mario Party mode some longevity, they implement small moments of strategy into a series that has for too long solely relied on randomness to determine a winner." Thankfully, it plays just as well as it does on other platforms without any performance hitches or bugs after putting about four hours into this version. Like its console counterparts, you can fill the screen with an adaptive border that thematically fits with the location you're in (Undertale plays in a 4:3 aspect ratio). Dodging enemy attacks in the bullet hell-style defensive phase in combat works just as well with the Joy-Con analog sticks. Undertale isn't afraid to break convention, and because it does so in a way that's thoughtful and humorous throughout, the result is an emotional rollercoaster that fills us with determination." Call of Duty's Black Market, an in-game shop for cosmetic items, has returned in Black Ops 4, and there are already dozens of unlockables to earn. Many of these items are for Blackout, Black Ops 4's battle royale mode, and you'll earn them by simply playing the game. In Black Market, the Contraband Stream tracks your progression towards each new item. The available items are swapped out for new ones with each seasonal change, which takes place approximately every two months. Operation First Strike, the first collection of items, is going on right now, and it includes new Blackout calling cards, emotes, signature weapons, Specialist skins, and tags. The entire assortment of cosmetics included in Operation First Strike are listed in the following gallery. Click through to see everything you can earn. The Black Market will also experience limited-time events, which offer opportunities for unlocking special cosmetic items. The first event started on October 20 for PS4 and begins on October 27 for Xbox One and PC. It will allow you to earn Halloween-themed gear and skins. With Halloween out of the way, the next couple of months are set to be filled with seasonal releases as we head towards the holidays. First out of the gate is Disney's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, which continues the studio's run of big budget live-action updates of classic fairy tales. This one isn't perhaps an obvious hit in the same way that some of its family releases are--and it's notable that the studio is keeping Mary Poppins Returns for nearer Christmas. But with an all-star cast and the wide family appeal of Disney, don't count it out to do very well across the globe. The recent success of A Star is Born has shown that there is a big market for music-led dramas, and there is plenty of interest in the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which is already out in the UK and opens in the US this Friday. The reviews have been mixed, but Queen's music remains hugely popular across several generations and there is continued fascination with frontman Freddie Mercury. The week's other releases include the rap battle satire Bodied in the US and the anime fantasy Mirai, which arrives in UK theaters, ahead of a US release later this month. And cinema buffs will want to make sure they check out The Other Side of the Wind, the legendary final movie from Orson Welles that has been completed after more than 40 years and makes its debut on Netflix. And of course, this being the start of the month, Netflix will also be packed with content that's new to the service, so expect to find some older movie must-sees in there too. So here's the week's new releases in the both the US and UK, in both theaters and on streaming... Bohemian Rhapsody
See it in US theaters on November 2 This biopic of Queen legend Freddie Mercury was in development for many years, with various directors and stars attached to the project. Even when the cameras started rolling the problems didn't stop--director Bryan Singer was fired by the studio during production, to be replaced by British filmmaker Dexter Fletcher. But the movie is now finished and hits theaters on Friday. Mr. Robot star Rami Malek takes on the role of the iconic frontman, and it charts the rise of the band through the '70s to their world-conquering success in the '80s. It's produced by the band, and reviews have suggested that it's more a celebration of the music than a look at the darker side of Mercury's life. But it's an absolute must-see for Queen fans. See it in US and UK theaters on November 2 Disney's series of live-action fairy tale adaptations has proven to be box office gold over the past few years, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is the studio's latest offering. It's based on the classic 19th century fairytale and stars Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, and Morgan Freeman, with Mackenzie Foy in the lead role as Clara, a young girl who is pulled into a mysterious, magical world on Christmas Eve. The title might not be as recognisable as The Jungle Book or Beauty and the Beast, but box office predictions are more modest than those commercial smashes. Bodied
See it in US theaters on November 2 Directed by acclaimed music video director Joseph Kahn and produced by Eminem, this rap-battle satire has picked up rave reviews at a variety of festival screenings over the past year. It focuses on a graduate student who is writing a thesis on the world of competitive rapping and decides to start entering some of these verbally-bruising contests himself. There are obvious similarities to the Eminem-starring 8 Mile, but Kahn's movie is more interested in addressing issues of race, prejudice, and cultural appropriation. If you've seen Kahn's lavish Taylor Swift videos or his previous movie, the insane horror comedy Detention, you'll know that he's got an incredible visual style. And, of course, it has a killer soundtrack. Nobody's Fool
See it in US theaters on November 2 The critics might hate his movies, but there's no denying the huge popularity of Tyler Perry. For more than a decade, the writer/director/producer/actor has released a steady stream of comedies, many of them featuring Perry as Madea, an elderly woman who takes no nonsense from anyone. Nobody's Fool is his latest movie, and while Perry stays behind the camera this time, it does star Tiffany Haddish, the lead of last year's Girl's Trip and the current comedy hit Night School. Haddish plays a recently-paroled woman who helps her straight-laced sister get revenge on a man who wronged her. It won't be subtle, but it might be funny. Prospect
See it in US theaters on November 2 Proof that you don't need a huge budget to produce gripping, thought-provoking sci-fi, Prospect hits theaters on the back of rave reviews from its various festival showings. The film follows a father and his teenage daughter who have won a contract to mine a deposit of rare gems on an alien moon, but end up facing a mysterious stranger who will stop at nothing to get the prize himself. The cast includes star Pedro Pascal (Narcos, Game of Thrones) and Sophie Thatcher (The Exorcist), and the clear western influence makes it one of the year's most intriguing sci-fi titles. Boy Erased
See it in US theaters on November 2 As an actor, Joel Edgerton is known for movies such as Red Sparrow, Bright, and Midnight Special, but he is also emerging as a talented director too. Following 2016's dark thriller The Gift, we have the drama Boy Erased. Based on Garrard Conley's autobiographical memoir of the same name, the impressive cast features Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe as a married couple who discover that their teenage son, Jared (Lady Bird's Lucas Hedges), is gay. They pressure him into attending a gay conversion therapy programme, which puts him in conflict with the head therapist (Edgerton). Conley's book has been acclaimed for the sensitive, powerful way it approaches its controversial subject matter, and Edgerton's movie looks set to do much the same. Mirai
See it in UK theaters on November 2 Anime director Mamoru Hosoda is best known for the first two movies in the Digimon series in the early 2000s, as well as the hugely successful films Summer Wars and The Boy and the Beast. Mirai is his latest release, and like his other movies, it combines a heartfelt family story with outlandish fantasy elements. It focuses on a small boy named Kun who finds a magical garden and meets the teenage version of his as-yet-unborn sister Mirai. The movie hasn't actually done as well at the Japanese box office as Hosoda's previous films, but the huge recent success of Your Name proved that there is still a huge appetite for this type of anime in the West, and it looks absolutely charming. See it on Netflix on November 2 Legendary Citizen Kane director Orson Welles spent much of the later part of his life living in Europe after his Hollywood career came to an end. His final movie, The Other Side of the Wind, was shot over the course of six years, between 1970 and 1976, and legal issues meant that it was still unfinished when he died in 1986. Thanks to Netflix's deep pockets, the movie has now been finished with the help of Welles' rough cuts and his editing notes. It's a Hollywood satire that stars two other legendary directors, John Huston and Peter Bogdanovich, and is a strange, experimental movie that is perhaps of more interest as a legendary "lost" film than an easy viewing experience. Nevertheless, movie buffs will want to check it out, together with the accompanying making-of documentary They'll Love Me When I'm Dead, which also hits Netflix this Friday.

As a wise man once said: "cash rules everything around me", and if Arthur Morgan had lived to see 1994, he'd probably agree. As you might expect, the keys to progression in Red Dead Redemption 2 don't lie in stockpiling experience or skill points, but cold hard cash. It's a rich man's world out in the old west, and if you have a good wad of money in your wallet, you can use it to buy better guns and equipment, feed yourself, groom your horse, buy new duds, customize the hell out of everything you own, and give you and your campmates a more comfortable way of living, among other things. But like real life, it ain't easy getting rich. The Van Der Linde gang begin the game in a poor financial position, and for a long time you'll find yourself doing tasks for little to no reward, and feel like you're getting nowhere. But don't fret, there are plenty of avenues to make some bread in Red Dead 2. Here are all the ways we've discovered so far. It's spoiler free, and you don't even have to be a jerk all the time. There are actually some money-related advantages to being a good guy, so you should carefully consider the approach you plan on taking with your version of the character. Diligence is one key aspect to making money, as you'll want to loot corpses, but there's more to it than ensuring you don't leave cash lying around on the ground after a fight. Have you played a video game in the past five years? Then this should be a no-brainer: loot everybody you see. You'll find ammo and consumable items which are always helpful, but you'll also often find a small amount of cash and valuable items which you can later sell. The act of looting is a bit more labored in Red Dead Redemption 2, but don't worry--after huge battles, Arthur will get the chance to comb the battlefield for spare change, and here's a tip--keep holding down the loot button and Arthur will automatically move on to a nearby body as soon as he's done. Also be sure to loot interior locations with cabinets and drawers (you can use Arthur's hunting sense with L3 + R3 to highlight lootable items), as well as the saddlebags of any remaining horses. Rob People And Stores
If you have no hesitations about being a badder-than-average cowboy, you can easily rob people on the street at gunpoint and ask them to hand over whatever they have. You can do the same to shopkeepers and get access to the cash register and any illicit business they may or may not be hiding in the building. Just be aware that these kinds of situations don't always go down well, depending on who you deal with--you need to be prepared for the consequences if a job goes south. Rob Trains
If robbing a lot of people in a short amount of time is something that appeals to you, then keep an eye out for any trains that might be nearby. There's some effort involved in actually getting on there and dispatching any guards, but after that, you basically have whole carriages full of people just handing things over. Just make sure to cover your face and know when to peace out. Rob Stagecoaches
Stagecoaches can also be pretty profitable, and they're a little easier to get under control. There are a number of ways to get one to stop with either by using your moxie or your muscle and once you've got things under control you can break into the lockbox at the rear of the carriage by either using a lockpick or just shooting the lock. Later in the game, you'll get access to characters who can give you hot tips on where to intercept particularly lucrative stagecoaches. Fence Your Looted Valuables
Alright, so you know all those rings, jewelry bags, buckles, gems, and pocket watches you've picked up? That stuff is no good to you, so sell it! Well, maybe keep just one pocket watch. You can either donate these items via the donation box to have it go straight to the gang's communal funds, or you can find a fence later in the game (there aren't any near the starting towns) to have that money go straight into your pocket. Fence Stagecoaches and Horses
As you progress through the story, Arthur and friends will meet characters who will take any stolen stagecoaches or horses you've come into possession of and give you a bit of cash for them. This is a bit of a drag, since you have to physically bring them back and the take isn't amazing, but worth considering if it's only a short detour. You can still sell horses at regular stables, but you won't get as much from them. You can also break in wild horses and sell them to a stable--you'll also get more for it depending on your bond with it. Hunt Animals, Then Sell Them.
When you're living on the road and off the land, hunting and fishing is a part of life. Animals have a number of uses--you can skin them and use their pelts in crafting, cook their meat for sustenance, and donate their carcasses and meat to Pearson back at camp to keep the camps food supplies up. But if your own supplies are well-stocked, you can also sell all animals and fishes to the butchers you find in towns. The selling price is based on the hunt quality, and the return is not great, but if you're already on your way into town a quick stop to hunt a boar is a good way to make few bucks for your next meal. Hunt Down Bounties
Alright, time to be a goody-goody. Optional wanted bounties will occasionally pop up during the game--you'll typically find posters in a town's Sherrif's office. You'll get a reasonable amount of money for hunting down these criminals and bringing them in, and it's usually worth doing them to get those extra little bits of storytelling. One of the first upgrades you can request for your camp is to improve Dutch's tent. This will supposedly encourage gang members to be more proactive in contributing to camp funds, but honestly, the difference is almost negligible. Always Help Venom And Bear Trap Victims
Red Dead Redemption 2 is full of little encounters to discover while exploring the open world. One of these encounters involves snakes, and the other involves bear traps. If you ever stumble across someone like this asking for help, do something! They won't give you anything immediately, but some time later, you'll run into them hanging out in front of a store. They'll recognize you, and offer to let you buy almost any one item from the store they're at and put it on their tab. This could mean anything from a free gun to a new hat, and potentially save you a couple hundred dollars. Help People For Information
Help people in other types of random encounters, and they'll often give you tips on where to find more avenues for money, like homesteads ripe for robbery. So yeah, it pays not to be a jerk sometimes. Well, until you need to be a jerk and rob someone's house. But they're mostly bad people, honest. Play Some Minigames
I'm no good at poker. But if you are, then it can be a pleasant way to earn a bit of easy cash. Red Dead Redemption features games like poker, blackjack, dominos, and five-finger fillet, all of which can be played for money. Do Missions
By far the most lucrative way to make money in Red Dead Redemption 2 is to just play the game--do the story missions, do the side missions, do the stranger quests. Some of them will only get you a small cash reward, some of them won't reward you at all, sure. But some of them will involve the activities mentioned, like stagecoach holdups and home robberies, and are more lucrative. Some of the major story missions will see you walking away with thousands of dollars. On top of that, missions will occasionally give you new guns and items, saving you a bit of money if you can just hold out a little longer before buying that sweet bolt-action rifle. So if you're low on cash, don't get too down in the dumps--there are a lot of avenues to make money no matter what kinds of activities you enjoy doing in Red Dead Redemption 2, so just follow your heart, and the rewards will come.

The jump scare is one of the easiest, laziest, and most maligned techniques in horror cinema. For decades, it's been used by directors as an easy way to get a cheap scare, and usually involves a long stretch of silence interrupted by a sudden loud noise. These moments doesn't necessarily make a movie scary, they just mean that audiences are momentarily surprised. But in the right hands, and deployed at the right moment, the jump scare can be a highly effective device. The most skilled directors use them to add to the tension and intensity of a movie, letting an audience know that anything could happen at any given moment. Whether it's a monster appearing from the shadows, a hand from under the bed, or something in the background making a sudden movement, the best jump scares are hard to forget. So here's our look at some of the most memorable, effective, and terrifying jump scares in horror history. Hold on tight! 19. A Tale Of Two Sisters (2003)
Like many Asian horror movies, this creepy South Korean film relies more on atmosphere and dread than big jump scares. But there's one great moment. The movie's creepy stepmother sees a hairclip on the floor of her kitchen. She bends down to pick it up and a hand suddenly appears from under the sink and grabs her. 18. The Orphanage (2007)
Director JA Bayona is currently terrifying audiences with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and 10 years ago, he was doing much the same with this outstanding Spanish-language chiller. There's a great, totally unexpected scare in the scene where main character Laura sees a woman hit by a bus. She goes over to the body and picks up a key hanging around neck. Suddenly, the woman grabs her arm and a sheet falls away from her head to reveal her horrendously mangled face. 17. The Thing (1982)
Director John Carpenter deserves much credit for being able to make his audience jump, even when anticipating something terrible in almost every scene. With a shapeshifting alien having infiltrated The Thing's arctic science team, anyone could transform into a hideous creature at any time. But it's still a massive shock when the character Norris--who has seemingly just suffered a heart attack--reveals himself to be the alien. As Dr Copper is about to use a defibrillator on him, Norris's chest splits open to reveal a set of massive fangs, which proceed to bite the poor doc's arms off. 16. The Descent (2005)
Much of The Descent takes place in the claustrophobic darkness of a cave network, in which a group of friends encounters a race of subterranean monsters known as 'crawlers.' We are introduced to these creatures in seriously scary style, via the point-of-view of a night camera it moves between the characters, revealing one standing right behind the group. 15. Insidious (2010)
Director James Wan might rely on traditional techniques to scare his audiences, but he's damn good at it. While both The Conjuring and Saw have their moments, his best scare is in Insidious. It's simple but highly effective. Two characters, played by Patrick Wilson and Barbara Hershey, are having a conversation across a kitchen tale. Wan cuts between the two throughout--but then Hershey hears a strange sound. The director cuts back to Wilson to reveal the movie's red-faced demon now standing right behind him. 14. The Shining (1980)
Stephen King is famously dismissive of Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of his classic novel and the liberties it took with the story. One of the biggest changes is the cruel, unexpected death of Halloran, the friendly chef who shares a "shining" ability with young Danny Torrance. Having spent much of the film travelling through terrible weather conditions to the Overlook hotel to save Danny, he is shockingly dispatched by Jack Nicholson and an ax within minutes of stepping into the hotel. 13. Candyman (1992)
Bernard Rose's adaptation of the Clive Barker story is one of the best horror movies of the 1990s, and it features a knock-out scare. Throughout the movie we are told that the vengeful, demonic former slave Candyman can be summoned by saying his name five times into the mirror. The main character Helen is not stupid enough to do that, but it doesn't matter. She opens a bathroom cabinet from which a terrifying hooked hand emerges. Like many of the scares on this list, this one works because of the eerie silence and carefully paced build-up that proceeds the big fright. 12. It Follows (2014)
The acclaimed It Follows shows that you don't need lavish special effects and camera trickery to terrify--you just need a great concept. In this case, it's literally being followed by a terrifying entity in human form. If it catches you, you die. One of the biggest shocks comes as a girl stand in a hallway. Suddenly, from behind, the looming figure of a tall, scary man appears, lurching towards her from out of the darkness. 11. REC (2007)
The Spanish quasi-zombie movie REC uses its handheld first-person technique to great effect. With much of the film set in the darkness of a tenement building, knowing that infected residents could appear at any point helps generate some incredible tension. The biggest fright concurs when one character is looking around an attic to check if it is a safe place to hide. The camera almost completes an entire 360 degree turn, before suddenly revealing an infected kid waiting to attack. 10. Halloween (1978)
John Carpenter's seminal slasher is a masterclass in terror, and it works because the audience never knows when masked maniac Michael Myers will next appear. The biggest shock is near the end, after Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) discovers the body for her friend Annie, placed on a bed next to a headstone. As Laurie backs away in horror, the body of Bob, one of the Michael's earlier victims, swings into shot from the doorframe behind her. 9. Mulholland Drive (2001)
David Lynch doesn't make "straight" horror movies, but there's no denying that many of his films plunge into terrifying, nightmarish territory. The Hollywood-set mystery Mulholland Drive features a sequence that seemingly has little to do with the main story, but works superbly in helping generate a sense of absolute dread. Two men talk in a diner about a dream one had, in which he saw something horrific behind the building. So the pair go outside to take a look, and after an agonising build-up, a scary-looking hobo slides into shot from behind a wall. The incredible thing about this scene is that the characters actually tell us what's about to happen a couple of minutes before it does, and it's still utterly terrifying. Actress Bonnie Aarons, who plays the hobo, later went on to terrify more viewers as the demonic nun in James Wan's Conjuring movies. 8. The Ring (2002)
For the most part, the Hollywood remake of the classic Japanese horror movie Ringu isn't as effective as the original. But there is a top quality scare, as Katie's mom tells Rachel (Naomi Watts) about finding her dead daughter in a closet. It's a quiet, sad scene, and we don't expect director Gore Verbinski to suddenly cut to the horrifying face of the girl at the moment she was discovered. 7. Poltergeist (1980)
Clowns and dolls are two of horror's scariest tropes, so it's little wonder that Poltergeist's biggest scare combines them both. Little Robbie has a spooky clown doll that sits at the end of his bed, and when the clown suddenly disappears, he makes the unwise decision to look for him under his bed. In a classic bit of misdirection, director Tobe Hooper relaxes the audiences momentarily by showing that he is not under there--before revealing that he's actually sitting next to Robbie. Boo! 6. Carrie (1976)
Some jump scares perform an important narrative role, and some are just there purely to get the audience to leap from their seats. The final moment of Brian De Palma's classic Stephen King adaptation is very much in the latter group; it's a bit silly but highly effective. Amy Irving's character Sue lays flowers on the grave of Carrie White. But then a bloody arm emerges for the grave and grabs her! And of course, it's all a dream. 5. Audition (1999)
The Japanese horror masterpiece Audition is best known for its excruciating climactic torture scene, but it also contains a terrifying jump scare. It's actually the first real scare in the movie and doesn't occur until well over an hour in--this is a film that takes its time to get to the scary stuff. But when it does, it utterly delivers. We already have our suspicion that the girl called Asami might not be everything she seems, and the movie's creeping dread pays off in the scene where she sits alone in her apartment, ignoring the phone while it rings. Suddenly, the mysterious bag which has sat in the background throughout the film grunts and moves--something or someone is inside. 4. Se7en (1995)
The fate of the Sloth, the third victim in David Fincher's serial killer favorite seems so ghastly that you don't expect there to be a second shock in store. Cops burst into his apartment the find the poor guy tied to a bed, having been there for a whole year. But the real kicker is that he's still alive, and his sudden convulsion several minutes into the scene is one of the all-time great jump scares. 3. Jaws (1975)
Steven Spielberg might be one of the cinema's greatest filmmakers, but that doesn't put him above an old-fashioned jump scare. In his shark classic Jaws, the underwater exploration of a sunken boat is interrupted by the severed, maggot-eaten head of its owner Ben Gardner floating into view. 2. Friday the 13th (1980)
While Jason Voorhees is known as the masked killer throughout the Friday the 13th series, he doesn't actually commit any of the murders in the first movie. That's all the work his mom Pamela--but young Jason does make an appearance right at the end, in one of horror's most famous scares. Alice, the sole survivor of Pamela's massacre, lies in a boat, recovering. Unfortunately, the young, deformed Jason is in the water, and in the movie's final moment emerges and pulls her into the lake. 1. The Exorcist III (1990)
Perhaps the greatest jump scare of all time. The first Exorcist might be by far the best movie in the franchise, but even that film doesn't have a moment like this. A quiet, drawn-out long shot of nurse doing her rounds on a hospital corridor is suddenly punctured by the crash zoom into a hooded figure striding towards her with a giant pair of shears, as the soundtrack shrieks to life. It's nightmarish and unforgettable.
