NES-Style Switch Joy-Cons Look Sick, But Will Set You Back $200

By Anonymous on Jul 01, 2017 09:20 pm

Hopping on the retro gaming craze, custom game controller company ColorWare has released a set of specially painted Joy-Cons that will throw your Switch back to 1985. Here's the catch--these NES-style Joy-Cons are $200.

ColorWare controllers are made from the original manufacturer's controllers, disassembled by hand, then painted, so you can expect all of the functions of the standard controllers to feel and preform the same way. This Joy-Con duo is no different, featuring the same accelerometers, gyro sensors, and buttons the standard Switch Joy-Cons do. This set also comes with matching wrist straps.

But, these customs will cost you $120 more than the standard Joy-Cons do, and take three weeks to ship. It's not to say that Nintendo's own Joy-Cons aren't cool in their own right launching with vibrant red and blue colors, and recently bright yellow with the launch of fighting game Arms.

Only the first 25 units have numbers of authenticity. This model, like other retro-themed controllers, consoles, and accessories ColorWare has made, is limited edition.

9 Tips For Surviving Zelda's Trial Of The Sword DLC

By Anonymous on Jul 01, 2017 08:30 pm

Tips to Overcome the Gauntlet

The first DLC for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, called The Master Trials, is out now. It includes a new quest known as The Trial of the Sword, which challenges you to overcome 45 enemy-filled rooms with nothing but the armor and weapons you find within. It's a rigorous trial, but if you finish it, you unlock the true power of the Master Sword, allowing you to utilize its power at all times without the consequence of it powering down. Click ahead to find 9 tips on how to better your chances at survival.

For more about Breath of the Wild, check out our full review, our guide roundup, or our feature detailing everything you need to know about it. And be sure to check out our roundup detailing where to find all the new armor sets and items.

Expand Your Inventory Space

If you haven't made it a point to expand your inventory space yet, you'd best do so now. It helps to have as much open space as possible, as you the more equipment you have on you, the better. Make sure to seek out as many Korok Seeds as you can; the newly added Korok Mask is a useful tool in tracking down those adorable forest spirits.

If you haven't expanded your inventory before, seek out the giant Korok named Hestu, who's on the pathway to Kakariko Village. Completing his initial request earns you the ability to upgrade your inventory space. But in order to do so, Hestu asks that you supply him with Korok seeds. These special seeds can only be acquired by finding Koroks hidden in the environment. For example, you can find one hidden beneath a rock on top of one of the Pillars of Levia. When you hand over Korok seeds to Hestu, he'll upgrade the space of an inventory category of your choice.

Consume Your Best Food Before Going In

While you start the Trial of the Sword completely devoid of all your weapons and items, it's actually possible to enter with buffs you've acquired beforehand. For instance, if you eat food that gives you extra hearts or a boost to your strength before initiating the trial, those attributes will carry over. Make sure to cook your best dishes. We recommend eating cooked Endura Carrots for extra stamina, a cooked Hearty Durian with +20 temporary hearts, as well as either of the two following recipes:

  • 30-Minute Attack Boost: 3x Mighty Banana, 1x Mighty Thistle, & 1x Dragon Horn
  • 30-Minute Defense Boost: 3x Fortified Pumpkin, 1x Armoranth, & 1x Dragon Horn

With these buffs, you should be in good shape to take on the Trial of the Sword's myriad difficulties and challenges.

Stealth Is Key

It's essential to utilize stealth whenever possible, especially against archers and higher level enemies. If you sneak up on them, you can use Stealth Strike, which is a devastating attack capable of nearly killing enemies in one blow, regardless of their level of health and defense.

Think Before You Eat

You'll often encounter food with stat boosts that can aid you, but be smart about what you consume. For example, if you're near death and you have both a Cooked Razor Shroom and a Cooked Stealth Shroom, opt to eat the latter as its boost to your stealth could better your chances of survival. But if that doesn't end up working, you'll at least have the Cooked Razor Shroom's Defense Boost to rely on when things go south. You always want to be thinking about what food boost is most useful during a given situation, and how you can use it to deal with the most unexpected of emergencies.

Get Rid of Low Level Weapons

Low-level weapons aren't going to do you much good in Trial of the Sword, but instead of dropping them, consider throwing them at your enemies. Doing so gives you a guaranteed critical blow, which is far more useful than leaving them behind.

Get Your Hands On An Electric Weapon

High-level enemies often have powerful weapons, which are worth getting. But if you see a foe brandishing a Thunderblade, prioritize grabbing it. The weapon's electrical characteristic makes it incredibly useful, as a single hit from it instantly stuns enemies, making them drop their weapons and shields onto the floor. Make use of this often to snag powerful equipment you can use to increase your chances of success.

Don't Forget About Your Sheikah Slate

Don't forget that you also have your trusty Sheikah Slate with you. Remote bombs are a handy way to conserve resources in the earlier floors, as they can easily wipe the floor with the red-class enemies you encounter.

Magnesis is great to break open the metal boxes you find around the levels. And what better way to break them open than bashing them against a Bokoblin's skull?

Cryonis is only handy on floors with water, but having a way to get out of the water quickly when fighting Lizalfos is a blessing.

Stasis 2.0 is a lifesaver. Freeze opponents in place to buy time to engage with smaller, more annoying enemies or use it against larger foes for a few cheap hits.

Be A Scavenger

Every single resource is precious. To give yourself the best chance of victory, search high and low for every weapon, chest, apple, and slither of hope you can find. Use your bombs to crack open wooden boxes and barrels for extra food, climb trees in search of eggs, check your surroundings for chests and extra weapons, and make sure you recover missed arrows. Take your time and be thorough in your search of every floor.

Use Your Environment

You may be stuck in underground rooms, but that doesn't mean you can't use the world to your advantage. For instance, those annoying fire chuchus setting everything ablaze can come in handy for impromptu cooking, as you can always drop some raw ingredients into a burning bush if you're desperate for hearts. It helps to understand and use your environment to your advantage. Get creative! You've got to do everything it takes to succeed.

Ever Oasis Review

By Anonymous on Jul 01, 2017 05:37 am

Ever Oasis is a cute hybrid RPG that attempts to mix Animal Crossing-like town building with an adventure along the lines of The Legend of Zelda. Its compound formula is appealing on paper, but for a while, Ever Oasis falls short of its potential. Its simplistic narrative, cutesy visuals, and basic town-building mechanics test your patience in the beginning. But when its principal ideas are given a chance to take root, it sprouts into a surprisingly absorbing adventure that consistently rewards your time and efforts.

Set in a hostile desert world, you play as a young creature called a Seedling, who with the help of a water spirit, is capable of creating a magical safe haven known as an Oasis. Your adventure begins in ruin as your brother's Oasis is attacked by Chaos, an evil force that seeks to devastate and corrupt all living things. It lays waste to the area and its inhabitants, but before Chaos can harm you, your brother teleports you to safety in the hopes that you may survive to create a new Oasis and gather up the strength to defeat Chaos.

Ever Oasis' main story never stretches too far outside its basic premise, rarely expanding upon its rudimentary good-versus-evil dynamic. Despite the stakes set by its grim introduction, it predominantly maintains a happy-go-lucky attitude in the face of conflict, and you seldom get a sense of how Chaos has gripped the land or its people. There are a couple moments where it's expanded upon, like the plight of the Lagora, a race of squirrel-cats who once cultivated a lush forest to produce water, only for it to be consumed by Chaos. Details like this offer valuable insight into the game's world, but they're too few and far between.

As a result, it isn't the narrative that pulls you into Ever Oasis. Rather, it's the slow process of building up your personal desert refuge that proves to be the game's most rewarding element. You expand your Oasis by convincing travelers to live there. This can be done by fulfilling their requests, which typically range from fetch quests to escort missions. Successfully convincing travelers to become residents of your Oasis feeds into Bloom Booths, which are shops they can run that sell specific wares, such as juice, books, or fabric. Once a booth is built, you supply it with items the owner needs to stock their goods. This in turn attracts visitors who come to your Oasis to shop, racking up money for you to purchase seeds to grow crops, materials for equipment synthesis, or additional Bloom Booths. It takes time to learn these tenets, mostly due to the game's slow and incessant tutorials, but once you're given the reins, the loop is quickly rewarding.

It's satisfying to build up your Oasis and see it steadily grow more vibrant and lush.
It's satisfying to build up your Oasis and see it steadily grow more vibrant and lush.

The wider variety of Bloom Booths your Oasis contains, the more people that come to visit; and the more people that live in your Oasis, the higher its level, thus increasing its size and real-estate space. Your thoughts are always locked on what you can do to maximize your profits and upgrade your Oasis, or how you can entice a specific traveler into visiting. There's great joy in sorting through and accomplishing the various odd jobs you're given, but what's most fulfilling is seeing your Oasis take on new life as it levels up, sprouting lush greenery, paving wider roads, and erecting stone monuments.

While you spend much of your time developing your Oasis, there are occasions when you must venture into the game's overworld--often to seek out residents or explore nearby caves for materials. Most of the game's locales are wide-open desert landscapes, which sounds dull aesthetically but is actually pleasing to the eye thanks to the way the game's day/night cycle changes the world's color palette. The environments are not as dense as they could be, sometimes coming across as small sandboxes more so than lived-in spaces, but they sport a sense of interconnectedness that remains satisfying to explore.

The ability to customize a party offers a welcome dose of strategy to combat.
The ability to customize a party offers a welcome dose of strategy to combat.

In your trek across the game's arid deserts, you often fight creatures tainted by Chaos' presence. Like much of Ever Oasis, combat is rudimentary and tedious at first, boiling down to dodging an attack at the right moment and counterattacking accordingly. But as you obtain more advanced maneuvers and abilities, fights start to become more exciting affairs, especially when you form a party of three of your Oasis' most formidable residents to accompany you. The ability to customize a party offers a welcome dose of strategy to combat, as utilizing the unique strengths of various characters becomes paramount to your success in the late game's more difficult fights. While combat can be fulfilling, inconsistent party AI frequently leads to moments of frustration. It's common to see your companions running headfirst into a brutal attack, and other times skillfully dodging out of harm's way. The issue is minor, but you're liable to adopt the habit of bringing extra healing items to accommodate your allies' sporadic incompetence.

A major highlight of the overworld is its dungeons. Each contains a varied mix of puzzles to solve and enemies to fight. The myriad puzzles you encounter are elaborate, requiring you to utilize the unique abilities of your party. Some characters can, for example, shapeshift. This particular ability comes in handy when you need one ally to become a ball and another to form a wall for the first character to ricochet off of. While none of the ordeals you face are particularly difficult, they're diverse enough to keep you consistently engaged. However, an issue that detracts from the pacing of dungeons is the constant need to return to your Oasis to change your party members to overcome specific puzzles. Fast-travel alleviates this annoyance to some degree, but the number of times you're forced to go back and forth breaks up the flow of dungeons, reducing the enjoyment of exploring and overcoming these trials.

While Ever Oasis is rough in spots, it helps that the game maintains a consistent level of wonder, introducing new types of challenges in step with your acquisition of new tools and abilities. Small quality-of-life adjustments, such as the ability to send out resource-gathering parties and bulk Bloom Booth restocking, are introduced to alleviate the demands of your routine as the game's scope increases and you're forced to spend more time exploring. It understands your struggles the moment you experience them, smartly streamlining your ability to accomplish tasks before they can become problematic. But building up your Oasis demands patience, and that can be the most challenging aspect of all. While it's easy to initially write off the game based on its rudimentary narrative and overtly vibrant visuals, what becomes compelling as you play more is the sense of ownership you start to feel for your Oasis and the bonds you create with your allies.

Ever Oasis' tight blend of mechanics and activities are bound to keep you coming back for more well after completing it, if only to see what else you can do to develop your desert sanctuary. While the game's story isn't particularly moving, the consistent gratification of its incisive design makes it a satisfying adventure. Ever Oasis takes time to grow, but the return is well worth the wait.

Street Fighter EX Dev Will Show Off New Game At EVO 2017

By Anonymous on Jul 01, 2017 05:32 am

Arika is best known for the Street Fighter EX series, but in recent years the studio has worked less on fighting games and more on puzzle and adventure titles. Today, however, it was revealed that Arika will show off its new project at EVO 2017, the big fighting game tournament.

Tournament organizer Joel Cuellar announced the news on Twitter, stating that the studio was bringing the game in a playable form. He provided no specifics about the title, but considering that it's coming to EVO, it's a safe bet that it'll be a fighting game.

Back on April Fool's Day, Arika shared a trailer of what many people initially thought was a joke, which you can watch above. The studio published a trailer showing an early prototype of a game that featured many characters from Street Fighter EX. Later on, it turned out that this was actually a real, playable prototype. "The fact that we hid that this was going to be the game played is the joke," a translated note from Arika said. There's no word yet on whether or not this will be the game shown at EVO.

The tournament takes place from July 14-16 in Las Vegas, and it showcases competitions between the best fighting game players in the world.
