Nintendo has filed a trademark application in Japan for something called "Nintendo Check-In," according to a bot on Twitter. @Trademark_bot is an account that automatically tweets out any public Japanese trademark applications. Take a look at the image below:
There are no details from Nintendo at this time about what "Nintendo Check-In' is, but the tweet says the trademark falls under category 41. According to Nintendo Everything, that means it could be used for:
Screening and production or distribution of movies
Stage play performances
Musical performance
Planning and management of game tournaments
Providing games online
Providing entertainment facilities
Rental of toys
Check out the tweet about Nintendo below. The trademark application was filed on June 20, and we'll report back as soon as we get any more information about what "Nintendo Check-In" is, and if we'll be seeing it outside of Japan.
Jump, a new video game subscription service that works a bit like Spotify, was revealed today alongside a closed beta.
The service, which is focused on highly rated and award-winning indie games at launch, gives subscribers unlimited access to a curated library of games. The games load in Jump's app in around a minute, depending on the size of the game and your internet connection, using technology that avoids the latency and quality issues of typical game streaming.
Jump will launch on Windows, Mac, and Linux with 60 games. More will be added periodically, and developers can submit games for consideration.
The closed beta runs from today, July 10, through July 24. You can sign up on Jump's website. When it launches later this summer, subscriptions will start at $10 per month.
Monster Hunter is coming to the popular mobile game Puzzle & Dragons, developer GungHo Online announced today. The collaboration launches today and includes Monster Hunter characters, enemies, a multiplayer dungeon, and a campaign to the game.
The biggest addition is that of the multiplayer dungeon, which allows three players to team up and take on a Monster Hunter-themed campaign. It includes several new enemies from the Monster Hunter games, and it features battles ranging in difficulty from Intermediate to Ultra G.
In addition, the collaboration includes two new playable characters. You get the Male Hunter immediately upon logging in, and you can earn the Female Hunter by clearing part of the dungeon. According to a press release, these characters can also be strengthened by "performing an Ultimate Evolution using the material items from the Monster Hunter Collab dungeons." You can also simply buy the characters with its in-game currency.
If you've reached Rank 50 in Puzzle & Dragons, you'll also get a free pull on the Monster Hunter Egg Machine, which grants one random monster from the collaboration.
EA has announced details for Star Wars Battlefront II's open beta. The beta begins on October 6 and runs until October 9, but those who pre-order the game can jump in two days earlier.
EA shared the details in a post on the PlayStation Blog. Participating players will be able to take part in the Galactic Assault on Naboo, the massive 40-player battle on the streets of Theed shown off at E3 2017 last month. Players can fight on either the side of the Separatist droid army or the Republic clones, with four trooper classes to choose from: Assault, Heavy, Officer, or Specialist. Players will also be able to control iconic Star Wars heroes and pilot prequel-era vehicles during the battle.
The open beta will also feature the multiplayer Starfighter Assault mode. While EA didn't share many details regarding this mode, the publisher says players will "be able to take part in an epic starfighter assault set during the original trilogy era, piloting an assortment of Star Wars' greatest ships in an objective-based, multi-stage battle." EA has confirmed that more details about Star Wars Battlefront II's starfighters will be revealed at Gamescom in August.
Star Wars Battlefront II launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 17. While all of the game's DLC maps and characters will be released for free, it also includes a microtransaction system. One of the major new features in Battlefront II is its proper single-player campaign, which we got to play at E3.
There's been a lot of news about fan-made recreations, tributes, or sequels to popular game series, and recently, a trailer showed off a pretty awesome Mega Man fan game that's coming this week. Called Mega Maker, it's meant to be a Mario Maker-esque title for the Mega Man series, and it's currently scheduled to launch on July 15.
From the short look in the trailer, the game seems really cool. It allows players to build levels using the assets from the first six Mega Man games, and it contains twelve bosses you can choose from. It has its own, Mega Man-like soundtrack, as well. You can watch the trailer below.
The team of fans working on the game cannot charge for it, as that would violate Capcom's copyright terms since it uses Capcom-made assets. Mega Maker's website makes sure to say that the assets are property of Capcom, as well, and that the team won't commercialize the game. However, the developer is taking donations through a Patreon campaign to help fund server costs.
However, there are examples of fan games surviving and even being blessed by the original developers. Installation 01, for instance, is a Halo fan game that was just recently given the green light by 343 Industries, as long as the fans never receive payment or even donations for its development. In addition, Mega Man 2.5D has yet to be sent a cease-and-desist from Capcom, so Mega Maker may still survive.
As of now, Mega Maker is planned for launch on PC on Saturday, July 15. You can read more about it over at its website.
Update: WWE has issued a correction regarding the release date for WWE 2K18 on Switch. The initial press release stated the game will arrive on Nintendo's console alongside the PS4 and Xbox One versions on October 17. However, WWE now says that the Switch version will launch "Fall 2017." The story has been updated to reflect that.
The original story is below.
The latest in WWE's annual 2K series, WWE 2K18, is scheduled to arrive for PS4 and Xbox One on October 17, but those won't be the only platforms to host the title. WWE has announced that the game is also releasing for Nintendo Switch sometime this fall.
The news came via a special video announcement featuring the game's cover star, Seth Rollins, who reveals that the wrestling series is making its return to Nintendo systems due to fan demand. You can watch the full announcement video at the top of this story.
WWE 2K18 marks the first time in five years that a WWE game is coming to a Nintendo console. The last one, WWE '13, released for Wii alongside PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2012. This is also the first time a WWE game will be available on a portable system in six years.
The Saw series is one of the most successful horror franchises of all time, and it returns in October after seven year break. Last month, it was announced that the new Saw movie is called Jigsaw, and now, a seriously creepy first poster has been released. Check it out below:
Jigsaw takes its title from the movies' psychotic, trap-setting villain, who is played by Tobin Bell. Bell is set to return for the new film--his character died in the third movie, but filmmakers has found a way to include him in every subsequent entry.
It is directed by Peter and Michael Spierig (Daybreakers, Predestination), and executively produced by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, who created the series. Wan has since become one of Hollywood's hottest directors, following the success of Furious 7 and The Conjuring and is currently making Aquaman for DC.
The Saw series has proven to be hugely profitable franchise for Lionsgate. The original movie was released in 2004 and made more than $103 million worldwide from a budget of just $1.3 million. In total, the series has grossed more than $870 million. The last movie to date was 2010's Saw 3D.
The glacier white PlayStation 4 Pro will make its debut alongside Destiny 2 on September 6, Sony has announced. As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, the bundle will include a physical copy of Bungie's shooter, the white PS4 Pro, and a white DualShock 4 controller.
Also in the package is a voucher for a digital content pack that will give owners access to the Destiny 2 expansion pass and "premium digital content." Take a look at the gallery below to see images of the white PS4 Pro.
Destiny 2 game director Luke Smith has teased the upcoming shooter's first raid. Raid 5, as it's known internally, will be set in a place that players "believe is real." He added that this raid, whatever form it takes, will be unlike the four that came before it.
Bandai Namco has announced a release date for the upcoming Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. The role-playing fighting game is coming to Nintendo's hybrid console in North America and Europe on September 22.
Despite arriving almost a full year after it released for other platforms, the Switch version of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 will contain some console-exclusive features. Along with the option to play against another player using a single system and a Joy-Con each, the Switch version also includes an exclusive multiplayer mode that supports up to six players locally. In addition to that, players can use motion controls to perform signature Dragon Ball attacks like the Spirit Bomb and Kamehameha.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 launched for PS4, Xbox One, and PC last October, and since then Bandai Namco has supported the game with a steady stream of downloadable content. The most recent DLC pack released last month and introduced two new characters from Dragon Ball Super--Fused Zamasu and Super Saiyan Blue Vegito--along with new costumes, skills, quests, and Super Souls.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 was well-received when it first debuted. GameSpot awarded the game 7/10 in our review and called it "among the best games to emerge from this beloved franchise." Meanwhile, the latest fighting game based on the series, Dragon Ball FighterZ, is scheduled to arrive on PS4, Xbox One, and PC early next year, though Bandai Namco hasn't announced if that title will likewise come to Switch.
Nioh's Defiant Honor DLC will be available on PlayStation 4 from July 25, developer Team Ninja has confirmed. Speaking on the PlayStation Blog, creative director Tom Lee said new weapons, armor, magic items, and enemies will be introduced in the update.
New difficulty levels and trophies will also be added, in addition to Sanada Yukimura, a legendary character who came to be revered as "the greatest warrior of all Japan." Lee added, "All this action takes place within exciting new stages and numerous sub-missions. So there's plenty of combat to be held and new challenges to be mastered."
"Defiant Honor takes us to Osaka Castle, the largest and most impregnable castle of Sengoku era," he explained. "This add-on features the legendary warrior Sanada Yukimura, serving Tokugawa Ieyasu's archenemy Toyotomi clan, who values honor above all else.
"As tensions brew between the Tokugawa and Toyotomi clans, Sanada Yukimura prepares his men for imminent conflict against the Tokugawa's forces by building a stronghold called the Sanada Maru on the outskirts of the Osaka Castle. With the castle fortified, Tokugawa's forces were faced with a difficult and bloody challenge."
Nioh's Defiant Honor DLC will be available for $9.99 / £9.99 or free if you own the season pass. The previous DLC, Dragon of the North, was released on May 2.
In GameSpot's Nioh review, Miguel Concepcion awarded it a 9/10, saying it offered a "unique perspective and depiction of Japan's warring states period" and an "effective and engrossing spin on Dark Souls-inspired combat and exploration."
A new international trailer for The Dark Tower has been released. The long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King's classic fantasy series hits theaters next month and this latest trailer showcases the conflict between the Gunslinger (Idris Elba) and the evil Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey). Check it out below:
The movie also features Tom Taylor as young protagonist Jake, plus Katheryn Winnick (Vikings), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Dennis Haysbert (24), and Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road). It's directed by Nikolaj Arcel.
In a recent interview with IGN, King hinted that the movie might not be an entirely faithful adaptation of the novels. "What I've always enjoyed is seeing my stories serving as a launching pad of some new or adapted vision," he said. "The people involved in the movie all had the latitude, which I was happy to give them, to reinvent it."
Nevertheless, the author is happy with the end result. "It was great to see Idris Elba as Roland," he said. "He has terrific focus and tremendous energy as Roland. Mathew McConaughey is very scary and very intense as Walter.
"[It] expresses a throwback to fantasy elements and the western iconography of the good guy, the bad guy, and the stakes being set high. People go in expecting to see a hell of a showdown, and that's what they get."
However, more recently, producer Ron Howard stated that while a show was in development, it was far from definite. "[There's] not a commitment on the television side," he told TV Guide. "But creatively, it could work very well, hand in hand with what we'd like the movies to be."
11 years after its release on PlayStation 2, Final Fantasy XII has been made available once again, this time for the PlayStation 4. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is a high-definition remaster of the RPG classic that features improved visuals, a re-orchestrated soundtrack, trophy support, and the International Zodiac Job System included in the Japanese version of the game.
Reviews for the game have started to appear online and, as always, we've gathered them up to give you an overview of its critical reception. Below you'll find a short excerpt from various publications, as well as the score the game has been awarded by them. For a wider view of its reception check out GameSpot sister site Metacritic.
"While its enhancements do not translate into a brand new game for existing fans, The Zodiac Age is nonetheless invigorating. For an experience that can last over a hundred hours, the subtle tweaks therein go a long way in showcasing Final Fantasy 12's grand trek in a new light. Its epic, lore-abundant story and its time-tested Gambit System should also appeal to those who missed out on the mainline series' trip to Ivalice the first time around. And thanks in part to the new audio and speed options, The Zodiac Age is an ideal definitive edition: one that improves the game over its original version across the board." -- Miguel Concepcion [Full review]
Polygon -- 8.5/10
"[Square Enix has] taken the game I already loved so much and given me more. The Zodiac Age doesn't add things for the sake of adding them. I can see myself putting 300 more hours into this version of Final Fantasy 12, trying different combinations of job classes and testing out new tactics on the optional bosses I could never quite conquer in the original game. The Zodiac Age takes a game I could play in my sleep and makes me wake up and appreciate it again." -- Whitney Reynolds [Full review]
RPG Site -- 9/10
"Western players are in for a treat with all of these adjustments and improvements made from the original release of Final Fantasy XII--many of which are old but never made their way West originally. The job system adds another level of interest to party coordination, elements like fast-forward and map overlays add a considerable amount of convenience, and the game looks and sounds great too. This remaster may not change the mind of everyone, but it is no doubt one of the most intriguing entries in the franchise and clearly the definitive version of a truly brilliant game." -- Adam Vitale [Full review]
US Gamer -- 4.5/5
"After missing out on Final Fantasy XII the first time, I feel like a lot of people are wondering if they should finally tackle the Final Fantasy that time forgot. As something of a former skeptic myself, I can definitely say, 'Yes.' It may never have the mass appeal of some of its peers, but it's time Final Fantasy XII received some of the love and attention it deserves." -- Kat Bailey [Full review]
IGN -- 8.8/10
"Final Fantasy XII's relatable roleplaying adventure has aged remarkably well, and The Zodiac Age remaster improves it further in meaningful ways. The storytelling, visual design, and gameplay feel just as fresh and interesting as they did over a decade ago, and the various new enhancements and adjustments will give new players a chance to experience the magic for the first time and fans of the original something enticing to return for." -- Heidi Kemps [Full review]
GamesRadar+ -- 4/5
"The Zodiac Age allows Final Fantasy 12 to realize its full potential, thanks to a wealth of graphical enhancements, a soaring soundtrack, and the addition of the Zodiac Job System." -- David Roberts [Full review]
A new trailer for the intriguing-looking PC western game Wild West Online has come online, showing a new look at the game's environments, activities, and a limited amount of combat.
Bear in mind that what you're seeing here is Wild West Online in its unfinished state, and this footage may not be representative of what the game looks like and how it plays at launch.
You can pre-order Wild West Online right now through its website to gain entry to the game's closed alpha and beta. Additionally, people who pre-order will get content like a skins for your saddle, horse, and weapons. The pre-order offer ends on July 20.
GameSpot recently caught up with 612 Games boss Stephen Bugaj, who formerly worked at Pixar and Telltale Games, to talk about the change and the game overall. You can read our interview here.
The beta for Wild West Online is scheduled to begin this year. The game is in the works for PC, and there are no plans to bring it to consoles.
Despite a variety of production delays, Westworld was one of 2016's most acclaimed new TV shows. Production on the second season is about to begin, as revealed by star Evan Rachel Wood on Instagram. Check her post out below:
A post shared by Evan Rachel Wood (@evanrachelwood) on
In addition to this image, the viral promo site DiscoverWestworld.com has been updated. It now appears to be malfunctioning, displaying ominous messages such as "something's gone wrong" and "we need help."
While there has been no official casting announcements for Season 2 so far, Wood is likely to be joined by Thandie Newton and Ed Harris once more. Last November, Harris told BBC Radio 4: "I was just talking to Jonathan Nolan last night, who's a creator of this thing with his wife Lisa Joy, and yeah, they're doing another season. They're going to do 10 more episodes, and I will be involved."
"We always knew that we wanted the stakes and the scope to increase dramatically and that means the scale of production increases as well," he said. "We have an amazingly talented group of writers, directors, and crew coming back and gearing up for what I think and what I hope will prove to be a season twice as ambitious as the first one."
Oculus has announced a hefty discount on its Rift VR headset and Touch controllers. For a "limited time only," the headset, two touch controllers, two sensors, a remote, an Xbox One wireless controller, and a connector for guitar controllers compatible with Rock Band VR can be purchased for £399/$399. Ordinarily, this would cost around £600.
As detailed on the Oculus Rift website--where you can order the headset--the bundle also includes seven free games which unlock when the Rift and Touch controllers are set up. These games are Lucky's Tale, Medium, Toybox, Quill, Dead and Buried, Dragon Front, and Robo Recall.
Naturally, you'll need to have a PC capable of supporting VR and the Oculus website provides details on recommended and minimum PC specifications for the Rift.
The £200/$200 discount brings the price of Oculus Rift and Touch controller bundle roughly in line with Sony's PlayStation VR. Valve and HTC's Vive remains the most expensive VR headset at close to £800/$800.
Oculus has been building on Rift's feature set since the headset was released. On May 26 it updated the Oculus App to introduce full room-scale capability and improve tracking for setups with three sensors, which is a requirement for room-scale VR. Additional sensors are currently available for £60/$60.
A few games on Oculus that benefit from room-scale are Rec Room, Onward, and Arizona Sunshine. The HTC Vive launched with room-scale capability with the tracking of its lighthouse sensors but, as mentioned above, is still the most costly consumer VR solution.
Grand Theft Auto V, now in its 199th week on the chart, finishes at No.2, ahead of Overwatch at No.3 and FIFA 17 at No.4. Codemasters' Micro Machines: World Series, meanwhile, makes its debut at No.5.
The latest entries in two of gaming's biggest first-person shooter franchises also re-enter the top 10, with EA's Battlefield 1 moving up from No.20 to No.6 and Activision's Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare rising from No.11 to No.8. Rounding off the top 10 are Rocket League at No.9 and Horizon Zero Dawn at No.10.

Here's some big news about the Overwatch League. Sources told ESPN that Blizzard has reached deals with six entities to participate in the not-yet-launched professional gaming league dedicated to Blizzard's popular shooter. Among those are reportedly New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and the group that operates the New York Mets.
According to ESPN, Blizzard has come to terms for teams to be located in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Boston, Shanghai, and Seoul. These would be for franchises, presumably, and the buy-in for the San Francisco-based NRG Esports team is reportedly $20 million. This fee would be paid over time, the sources added. NRG would appear to have deep pockets, as the team was founded by Sacramento Kings co-owners Andrew Miller and Mark Mastrov, with further investment from Shaquille O'Neal, Alex Rodriguez, and Jimmy Rollins.
The pricing for Kraft's group and Sterling Equities, which operates the Mets, have not been announced.
The New York team is owned by Sterling VC, while the other to American squads are to be run by "sports team owners and business moguls within the last two years." The team Immortals will be located in Los Angeles, and the aforementioned NRG will be set up in San Francisco.
As of now, all of this is unconfirmed, and comments from the parties in question have not come in. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.
A report from Richard Lewis has further details on the Overwatch League, and it's not all positive. A source told him that one "sizeable sponsor" has dropped out to the reported fee being too expensive. The source said Blizzard informed them that the Overwatch League would be "bigger than the NFL," explaining the higher price point.
Announced in November 2016, the Overwatch League is scheduled to kick off this year. "The Overwatch League represents not only the pinnacle of Overwatch competition, but also a genuine career opportunity for the most skilled Overwatch players," Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said. "We're building a league that's accessible to players and fans, sustainable, and exciting for everyone involved."
In May, a report claimed that the Overwatch League was struggling to find franchises, a problem that, if it ever existed, appears to have been addressed.
Super Meat Boy developer Team Meat had a wonderful day on Twitter over the weekend. When someone pressed the studio about its next game, the studio responded by saying you can be sure the new game will have good controls and level design, just as the celebrated Super Meat Boy did. "To release a follow-up without at least those two staples would be f***ing stupid," reads a tweet from the Team Meat account.
And that was just the beginning. The studio went on to list off examples of what it would be like to release a sequel without elements of what made Super Meat Boy great. There are some great ones in the thread, which you can see below.
Team Meat is working on a new Super Meat Boy game called Super Meat Boy Forever as well as secret things. More footage of the new game, Super Meat Boy Forever presumably, will be shown later this year, ahead of the start of PAX Prime in September.
It would be like creating a Metal Gear Game without stealth and an over the top story.
There has been much talk and buzz around the next James Bond movie, with a lot of the conversation covering who will play the super-spy. Now, it looks like Daniel Craig is coming back to play the part a fifth time, and singer Adele could sing the theme song again.
The Mirror UK (via ScreenRant) is reporting that Craig will be back for the 25th Bond movie. The site also has a list of actors who were reportedly considered for the part, including Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, James Norton, and Aidan Turner.
As for Adele, her song "Skyfall" for the movie of the same name won a Grammy Award, and Bond producer Barbara Broccoli is reportedly "determined" to have the singer come back for for the next film.
Skyfall is the highest-grossing Bond movie ever, bringing in more than $1.1 billion. A source told The Mirror UK that Craig and Adele together "are the winning team, the ultimate choice, the money spinners." The source added that while Craig is on board with coming back, Adele is less of a certainty.
In October 2015, Craig said if he were to play Bond again, it would "only be for the money." A year later, a report claimed that Craig was offered $150 million to star in the next two Bond movies, Bond 25 and Bond 26.
After Craig finished filming Spectre, the latest Bond film, he said he wasn't looking to dive straight back into another Bond production. "I'd rather break this glass and slash my wrists," he told TimeOut. "No, not at the moment. Not at all. That's fine. I'm over it at the moment. We're done [filming Spectre]. All I want to do is move on."
This year's Summer Games Done Quick video game speedrunning event for charity has wrapped up, and it was a huge success. The event, which benefits Doctors Without Borders, brought in a total of $1,776,510.79 from 30,068 people. That works out to an average of $59.08 per user. The biggest donation was $20,300, according to the stats page.
$1.7 million is well ahead of the numbers for Summer Games Done Quick 2016, which came in at $1.29 million. For this year's event, viewers could chime in with their thoughts on what the streamers should do. For example, as Kotaku points out, people donated $2,740 just to have a speedrunner hold an Emil plushie in one hand while playing Nier: Automata with the other.
With a current cash total $1,760,400 we absolutely destroyed our total from SGDQ of last year! Amazing job everyone! #SGDQ2017pic.twitter.com/dyMPZhnbmF
Summer Games Done Quick is the second leg of the event's annual streaming events, the first being Awesome Games Done Quick, which was held earlier in the year. That event brought in $2.2 million, which is more than a million dollars more than the previous year.
Speedrunning is the process of playing through a game as quickly as possible. They are particularly fun and sometimes bewildering to watch because they require expert skill, lots of planning, and often the use of tricks.
As part of Destiny developer Bungie's "Bungie Day" celebrations, the studio has released some lovely-looking artwork for Destiny 2 and launched a new sale in the Bungie Store.
The studio released a number of new wallpapers, which you can see here on Bungie's site. There's concept art, along with shots of the main classes, and some gorgeous outdoor scenes. You can download them in 4K for your desktop or pick up mobile versions.
Another element of Bungie's celebrations is a store-wide Bungie Store sale. Now until July 14, you can save 17 percent of everything when using the code SEVENISDARKER. Something else to note is that a portion of Bungie Store sales go to the Bungie Foundation.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the sequel to the Jurassic World, has finished filming. If you're director JA Bayona, how do you celebrate the occasion? With an animated GIF of star Chris Pratt gyrating his hips, of course. You can find this GIF below (via ScreenRant), along with messages of support from producers Frank Marshall and Colin Trevorrow (who directed the first one).
Fallen Kingdom also stars Bryce Dallas Howard, and, with Pratt, they are joined by James Cromwell, Toby Jones, and Rafe Spall. Jeff Goldbum, who starred in the original Jurassic Park, will also reprise his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm. One of Goldbum's key lines from the original movie is referenced in the new tagline: "Life finds a way."
Bayona previously made the horror movie The Orphanage and the recent drama A Monster Calls. Trevorrow, who directed the first Jurassic World, chose to helm Star Wars: Episode IX instead of this sequel, but he remains on board as a writer and producer.
Trevorrow recently spoke about working with Bayona. "It is by far my favorite creative collaboration that I've ever been involved in," he said. "Bayona is a completely different kind of filmmaker and thinker than I am, yet we do have a lot of things in common. I was able to craft something specifically for another filmmaker that I admire. I built a Spanish horror thriller with dinosaurs in it that I probably wouldn't have built for myself."
Fallen Kingdom opens on June 22, 2018.
Jurassic World currently stands as the fourth highest grossing movie of all time, bringing in $1.6 billion at the global box office. It was the first new entry in the series since 2001's Jurassic Park III. The franchise is based on Michael Crichton's 1990 novel.
The next movie from The Dark Knight and Inception director Christopher Nolan, the war film Dunkirk, is out very soon, and Nolan is doing the rounds to promote it. In a recent interview, he said he was not fully aware of how famous One Director's Harry Styles was before casting him--though his daughter knew more about it.
"I don't think I was that aware really of how famous Harry was," Nolan told Billboard (via Entertainment Weekly). "I mean, my daughter had talked about him. My kids talked about him, but I wasn't really that aware of it. So the truth is, I cast Harry because he fit the part wonderfully and truly earned a seat at the table."
Styles, 23, plays a soldier in Dunkirk. The film tells the story of the famous Battle of Dunkirk, where thousands of soldiers became trapped on a beach and their evacuation.
Styles himself told Billboard that his first days on the set of Dunkirk were "overwhelming."
"I'd say realising the scale of the production was very overwhelming. I think whatever you imagine kind of a giant film set to be like, this was very ambitious even by those standards," he remarked. "You know the boats and the planes and the volume of bodies ... it was pretty amazing."
Dunkirk opens on July 21. It also stars Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Hardy.
Epic Games has released the cinematic launch trailer for the "action building game" Fortnite, which comes out very soon. The over-the-top trailer showcases Fortnite's tone, which comes across as lighthearted and silly but in a charming way, too.
Take a look:
Fortnite launches on July 25 through paid early access on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, and you can get in four days before that, on July 21, when you pre-order the Founder's Pack.
When GameSpot's Peter Brown played Fortnite he found himself won over by the game. "Epic seems to have done the impossible: it's managed to make a game about gathering and crafting appealing to me, someone who typically avoids games built on similar foundations," he said in his Fortnite preview.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opened on Friday, and it was a big hit, though it did not set a new opening-weekend record for the series. According to Entertainment Weekly, the film pulled in $117 million in the US, which was in line with estimates, but it's below the $151 million that 2007's Spider-Man 3 made.
Still, it was a big showing for Tom Holland's debut as Spider-Man in a standalone film (he had a small part in Captain America: Civil War). Homecoming's opening weekend domestic figures are above The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($91.6 million), Wonder Woman ($103 million), Logan ($88 million), and Doctor Strange ($85 million).
In terms of its international performance, Homecoming made $140 million from foreign markets, boosting its global haul to $257 million after just one weekend.
Homecoming also stars Michael Keaton as the villain, Vulture, and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man. GameSpot's Randolph Ramsay said in his review, "Spider-Man: Homecoming gets everything right about this beloved Marvel character, which after the Batman and Robin-like awfulness of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, comes as a huge relief."
Rounding out the top five movies at the US box office this weekend were Despicable Me 3 ($34 million), Baby Driver ($12.7 million), Wonder Woman ($10.1 million), and Transformers: The Last Knight ($6.3 million).
The July 7-9 US box office figures follow below, as rounded up and compiled by EW.
