Finally, Spider-Man has a solo film existing within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His newest film, Spider-Man: Homecoming--now in theaters--featured quite a few characters from the comic book series, some familiar and some not. Here are 21 comic characters we saw in the film, and where they appeared. Warning: Spoilers for Spider-Man: Homecoming coming up.
Spider-Man
If Spider-Man wasn't in a movie called Spider-Man: Homecoming, that would be incredibly weird. The movie follows the exploits of a young Peter Parker (Tom Holland) after his appearance in Captain America: Civil War.
Aunt May
Aunt May Parker (Marisa Tomei) is in the film quite a lot, as you'd expect. This version of Aunt May was a bit more fun than portrayals of her in the past, which were stiff and cantankerous.
Vulture
The Vulture (Michael Keaton) was one of the best things about Homecoming. He is an incredibly sympathetic character and well-rounded, making him one of the more dynamic villains in the MCU. Find out more about The Vulture here.
Iron Man
Spider-Man's mentor in the film is none other than Tony Stark, better known as Iron Man. The Avenger appears a few times in order to lend a helping hand, like when the Staten Island Ferry gets cut in half.
Shocker
Vulture's right-hand-man in the film is Herman Schultz, who later goes by the name Shocker, after Toomes killed the previous criminal with that name. Schultz has a few battles with Spider-Man during the course of the movie. Find out more about The Shocker here.
Captain America
Captain America does make several appearances in Homecoming but in a nontraditional way. The now imprisoned member of the Avengers appears on television in educational videos. A couple pop up during the film, and there is one more after the credits, which we detail here.
Ant-Man and War Machine
During the early moments of the film, many members of the Avengers appear as Spider-Man takes video of the battle he was engaged in. In the background, Ant-Man grabbed War Machine, with Spider-Man talking into the camera.
Black Widow and Black Panther
The audience also caught a glimpse at Black Widow and Black Panther from afar, right before Spider-Man jumped into battle and stole Captain America's shield, during Civil War.
Anne-Marie Hoag
Fans of the comic book team Damage Control finally got to see the founder of the company that cleans up after super-powered battles in the Marvel Universe. Tyne Daly played the role of Anne-Marie Hoag, who was featured early on in the film, when her company took Adrian Toomes's contract from right underneath him. Happy Hogan
Tony Stark's assistant and friend, Happy Hogan, appeared in Homecoming many times. Jon Favreau reprised the role, as someone who never answers his text messages from Peter Parker.
Pepper Potts
Surprisingly, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) showed up late in the film, when Stark was offering Parker a spot on the Avengers. We haven't seen Potts in a Marvel movie since Iron Man 3 in 2013.
Jackson Brice/Montana
The audience may not have seen much of the first Shocker in Homecoming, mainly because Toomes vaporized him, but Jackson Brice's (Logan Marshall-Green) character has a long history with Spider-Man. In the comics, Brice is a character named Montana was a longtime member of the group The Enforcers, who battled the web-slinger a few times during the '60s.
Mac Gargan/Scorpion
During the scene on the Staten Island Ferry, we met Mac Gargan (Michael Mando), who was also in the mid-credit sequence. To most people, he seemed like a run-of-the-mill villain, but comic book readers know him better as Scorpion and in the late '00s, Venom. The giant scorpion tattoo on his neck might have given him away. Find out more about Mac Gargan here.
Tinkerer
The genius engineer behind all of Toomes's weapons was Phineas Mason (Michael Chernus), who is better known as the Tinkerer in the comics. While he is a low-level villain in the Spider-Man comics, he's one of the smarter villains in Spidey's rogue gallery.
Betty Brant
In Homecoming, one of the hosts on the high school news is none other than Betty Brant (Angourie Rice). In the comics, she is a reporter at the Daily Bugle and one of Peter Parker's love interests.
Jason Ionello
The other high school reporter is Jason Ionello (Jorge Lendeborg Jr.). In the comics, Ionello is friends with Flash Thompson--Parker's bully during high school.
Flash
While we never hear his last name in Homecoming, Tony Revolori plays Flash, who spends a lot of time making fun of Parker, referring to him as "Penis Parker." Obviously, this is Flash Thompson, who eventually became host to the Venom symbiote in the comics.
Ned Leeds Is Totally Ganke
If you're a fan of Ultimate Spider-Man, then it's hard not to see Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) as Ganke, who was Ultimate Spider-Man's best friend. Everything about their dynamic in the comic is in Homecoming. There was even a joke in a recent Spider-Man comic where Ganke asked to be called Ned.
Michelle Wants To Be Called "MJ"
One of Peter Parker's quirky friends is Michelle (Zendaya), and at the end of the movie, Michelle asks Peter to be call her "MJ." In the comics, "MJ" refers to the love of Peter Parker's life, Mary Jane Watson. However, this whole moment feels a bit tacked on, much like the end of Dark Knight Rises, when a secretary told Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character that he should go by his middle name, Robin.
